First thing in the morning the day after the feast you find yourself visiting the Ancient Runes classroom for the very first class of the term, a seminar of sorts where students of all ages have the opportunity to learn together. Perhaps you’ve had the chance to speak with Professor Beryl already, but this is yours (and everyone’s!) first time in her classroom. What should you expect? Well, perhaps not the stool at the front of the classroom, reminiscent of the sorting hat that many encountered at the feast except with an ancient and worn-looking old cowboy boot upon its surface instead of a hat. The boot is complete with a spur. It's made from supple leather and looks like it might want to fall apart at any minute - the front of the boot is even coming up from the sole, looking oddly mouth-like, but it's clean and (despite appearances) doesn’t stink at all.
Professor Beryl stands near the blackboard and greets every student with a smile and a warm welcome. She tells you to take your turn and step up to be sorted by the boot. Sorted how? Well, simply take your own shoe off, put the boot on (it is charmed to resize itself to fit each student), hop around a few times, and it will speak out of its sole and tell you what your MBTI type is! That’s right, before class begins each and every student is expected to be sorted by their temperament.
Once you take your turn, Professor Beryl bids you to take a seat at your desk where you are expected to take out your rune sets, parchment, your rune journal, and a quill.
The blackboard behind Professor Beryl also includes instructions:
Quote:
Greetings and welcome to Ancient Runes!
Once you have taken your turn and had your MBTI type revealed to you by the temperament sorting boot, please take a seat and write your MBTI type at the top of your parchment in large font so that others can see it easily.
ooc: welcome to the first Ancient Runes lesson of the term! Please note this IS your first class with Professor Beryl and she’s looking forward to getting to know your kiddos! You have approximately one day to post arriving before the lesson will continue, however if you miss the arrival you can still include your character trying the boot and getting their results as if they were here all along.
In order to get your MBTI results, I suggest this online quiz or this one but you are welcome to use any online MBTI quiz that you prefer, or if you already know your character’s MBTI simply use that! You can RP the boot sorting your character yourself - it will tell the student their MBTI type out loud (speaking from it's broken sole ) have fun with it! Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have. edit: A/T type is optional to include
edit: the lesson is now underway, but you can still include the boot stuff in your post if you join in after this point. Check the index below for where we are at!

Eiji was having a hard time not picturing his new professor in a form fitting purple dress and dark-purple lips at the moment. And no, he was not the sort to usually have boyish fantasies about people...but the last name Beryl brought up other vivid imagery and it caused him to snort under his breath at the Healer Beryl. He really needed to get the notion of Queen Beryl out of his mind if he was going to be of any level of efficiency this lesson.
Efficiency that included listening to what the woman was lecturing. Unfortunately...the Slytherin only really started tuning in when the handout was mentioned and then his attention was drawn to what was written there and trying to find what his four letters had been on it. Thankfully...his was at the top, so that saved a bit of time as he transcribed from handout to his own notes.

Only...what had been this A business and why was it not listed on this handout?
There was more instruction being given, and Eiji was not entirely sure what he felt about this. Personalities were not fixed as far as he was concerned. They could evolve and shift given life experiences. Though it was interesting to note that the other in the class that shared his same four letters were also Slytherins. That was a sort of case study he may be more inclined to look into, which houses were more prone to which of these random letters. Connecting them haphazardly to runes? Eh. He preferred Headmistress Hawthorne's approach to direct practicality of the uses of runes to this.
But.....he would...try.
Was there a rune of indifference and sarcasm? That was the one for him.

Once the traits - somewhat - written down, she pulled open their textbook, and then again glanced at Eiji, "how do you think I can narrow my traits down with these runes?"
Thankfully, Missa's presence was calming. Enough so that his annoyance with this was dulled. Though she was clearly more into this than himself seeing as she practically had a full parchment of notes where as he had...only the bits that directly related to himself. He saw no need to make any notes about this personality type business other than what related to himself anyway.
"Hmm?" he murmured while tickling his nose with his quill as he glanced over to her. Of course, she was using that Ravenclaw brain of hers and rattling off a billion questions. Well, four for the time being but questioning with Missa was like chopping off the head of a hydra. Once one was gone, two more grew back in its place. But he would indulge, as he always did. "No," he shrugged easily, lifting one finger to indicate that he was responding to her first question and then lifted a second finger to move on to the second. Though first he peered over to look at her notes and smiled a bit. "Yes." And now for the third finger. "No." A fourth. "Yes. Though personality traits are stable over long periods and why the Sorting Hat is not premature decision making, per say. Stable for somewhere around 40 years, I've read."
And now to prepare for the follow up of eight questions.
But first... back to his notes real quick to narrow his traits down.

Hanna was enjoying the confusing thoughts she was having. Of course she wasn't in Ewan's head, so she merely read his list and formulated her own opinions. She was interested in hearing what his interpretations were, though, so she listened to his reasoning and nodded along. "I can see that. So... so for example perhaps Quidditch. You get your hands into it, because it interests you, and Fehu it's kind of like you win or earn something. Like a trophy? Or even just winning a game?" She hoped she wasn't on the complete opposite of what Ewan was saying.
She looked over at the part of the textbook Ewan was snortling over and cracked a laugh herself. With that in mind, she looked at Fehu and something clicked a bit more. "I suppose if you look at the reversed meanings from Fehu you can see it indicates failure. And if you can relate it to getting stuck into something that interests you, the reverse of winning at whatever it is would be failure."
And there was Professor Beryl, giving them insight to the runes they were discussing. She was about to ask whether the Merkstave meaning would be used, but it was answered almost as soon as she thought it. She looked back to her textbook to see if she could stretch any of the Merkstave of her runes to the traits she had picked out.
"So if I look at Reliable as a trait, I chose Eihwaz because it seemed very fitting." And here, she looked for her own Eihwaz rune, and placed it reversed. "But if it was reversed, something like confusion and dissatisfaction could be used to represent persistence. Because if I don't understand something, I might be confused about it, and dissatisfied with this black hole of something I don't know. And my persistence in trying to understand said thing comes about from being confused and dissatisfied." She paused to think over what she'd just said. "Is that an acceptable interpretation?" She asked both Ewan and Professor Beryl.
Ewan could literally feel his brain start to fry as both Hanna and Professor Beryl both discussed the runes and interpretations further. Watching carefully as the professor demonstrated the difference between the runes and the way they fall, he jotted a few notes down paraphrasing her words so that he could re-read it later when his brain was a little bit less fried.
”So am I right in saying that no matter where they fall or how they do, it does depend on the situation and interpretation” He really didn’t want to repeat her words, just try to put them into his own so he could understand better. Moving ever so slightly now to face both Hanna and the professor, he put down his pen to make sure he gave them both his fullest attention. He may not be the brightest but he had no choice but to focus and try his best to understand.
Ewan really did find it interesting to see the reasoning behind some of the runes that Hanna had matched with certain characteristics. Running one of his hands through the copious amounts of curls, he gave her a reassuring nod, showing that he agreed with her reasoning.
”That may work as long as you’re still being persistent in finding the answer. Although, couldn’t Dagaz maybe work for that too?”. Pulling out his rune to show them both now, he plopped it down on the table the right way up. ”Making a breakthrough on something that you've been struggling with and then being aware when it’s okay to try a different method or way forward could also show persistence because you’re trying different methods to find the right answer”. Pausing briefly, not wanting to get his own thoughts mixed up, he continued “ Also, it mentions having the power of will so maybe that could link to persistence although i'm not really sure if it'd work for being reliable too. ”.
One thing that was certainly going to take away from this lesson is the fact that the runes are very much up for interpretation.

"Some insightful choices, I see, Miss Castillo. What connections are you making here? I'd love to hear your thought process." She said encouragingly.
Whilst she had accomplished the task at hand, she still continued skimming through the pages of her textbooks. Incase there were any better choices she could have made, nothing was ever quite finished. She only paused to look up when she felt her Professor looming over head.
Looking up, the Slytherin tilted her head at the woman's observations... and, the question. "Um," she didn't want to share the connections or her thought process. Her discomfort caused her back to stiffen. It was twice now that the new Professor was asking her to do something that she didn't want to do. The odds were against Professor Beryl and Nina was too. Officially.
You see, if she shared her thought process then others may overhear. The last thing she needed anyone in this classroom to know was how seriously she took the subject and how hard she worked. Because she liked having pretty boys tutor her.
Nina gave Professor Beryl a wide-eye, empty sort of stare. "...I just chose the prettiest ones..." While it wasn't the best thought out lie, it had been the most accessible.

Kaiser raised his eyes from his parchment to Professor Beryl as she passed him, and met her smile with a small one of his own. He thought very briefly about asking for a little bit of help with what he was doing, but decided that he would at least try for himself first.
With that in mind, he began the process of trawling through his rune dictionary, look between it and his parchment every now and then to refresh his memory on the traits he had already written down. This wasn't particularly difficult, he had to admit, given that they were able to reference the book and everything, rather than rely on their memory of the runes. It was mostly a question of staying on task.
Working slowly, but working nonetheless, Kaiser got more written on his parchment as the time passed. Eventually he had what, in his opinion, could certainly pass for a completed activity, and he sat back in his chair and allowed his attention to wander.

Maeve wasn't particularly sure about what being a 'campaigner' meant. She also wasn't sure how any of this connected to the study of ancient runes. Listening to some of peers speak, she couldn't help but overhear Nina saying about choosing the pretty ones and Maeve quirked an eyebrow at her. Okay, so she didn't know the girl at all - other than recognizing her from being a transfer mid-term - but even to her own untrained ear, that seemed to be a lie.
She then glanced towards the two students who had been told to change into correct footwear and made a note to inform at least the Gryffindor one of a very helpful spell in these situations.
Right. Back to looking at these runes. Taking the handout from the Professor, the blonde stared on it a moment along with moving her finger down the list to her MBTI type. And staring it in with red ink to highlight it some more on her handout before taking out a fresh piece of parchment for her own notes.
And that was all she wrote. Could she just pick the traits starting with each letter of her MBTI? Deciding to try it, she continued on with picking three traits, because there was none that started with N
Maeve Walsh
ENFP - Campaigner
Enthusiastic -
Forward-Thinking - Ehwaz: Gradual development and steady progress are indicated
Passionate - Kenaz: passion
Spontaneous - Uruz: Physical strength and speed, untamed potential
And added Spontaneous to the list, because as she read the Rune Handout, Uruz seemed to stick out for that one. And she did like to think she did things spontaneously? Glancing around, she looked for other campaigners who might want to discuss with her, but for the life of her, couldn't remember who else the boot had announced her letters for.

No sooner had he put his quill down, the Professor was right there, asking him questions. The thirteen year old's eyes widened, slightly taken-aback by her sudden appearance. Was he in trouble? Already?? He hadn't done anything wrong, as far as he could remember.
It was a moment or two before he realised that her question was her helping and so, he turned back to his piece of parchment. I have chosen four key words and traits that describe my personality type. I have written the rune translation as well.
1. Dedicated (Rune: Eihwaz) - I have chosen this rune because it means dependability and strength, which are quite close in meaning to dedicated. Also, I have chosen this rune because when it is reversed, it means dissatisfaction and destruction.
2. Innovative (Rune: Kenaz) - I have chosen this rune because it means creativity and technical ability, which are both parts of innovation. When reversed, it means instability and exposure, and that is another reason why I chose this rune.
3. Caring (Rune: Ingwaz) - I have chosen this rune because it means family love and warmth, which are parts of being caring.
4. Observant (Rune: Mannaz) - I have chosen this rune because it means intelligence and awareness, which are close to observance. When reversed, it means cunning and craftiness. Cunning is also a part of observance and craftiness is a part of innovation - another aspect of people with my personality type.

Lenora listened to what the professor said carefully, taking notes as and when required. She considered the assignment for a moment or two, wondering if it would be okay to ask the professor for some help..but people seemed to be doing it all on their own so she might as well give it a try. She didn’t want to be the only one asking for help anyway. She took a deep breath and started to read the handout for a while before shifting her attention to the relevant chapter in the textbook.
Taking her quill, she started to write on the parchment, starting with her name and MBTI type.
Having completed the task that had been given, she stared at her parchment for a while, wondering if she was right? Eh, she’ll know soon enough. Lenora continued flipping through the pages of the textbook, reading about other runes and their significance. It was quite interesting. Hm.

She had assumed that's exactly what he might say, and it was comforting because some of these things in the list - made her seem like an ultimate sacrificing pushover and she honestly wasn't happy about it.
Nodding to suggestions of the runes, the brunette scribbled some more on her notes:

Warm - Sowilo (the sun)
Reliable - Algiz (protection)

After a bit of reading, and writing and re-writing the runes, she again turned to Eiji, "does this sound right?"

Rylee spent the better portion of listening to the professor speaking, taking down notes. She had a very strong feeling that notes were going to be important here and without them she wouldn't get very far at all. When the handouts were being sent around she did pause for several moments to look it over, setting it beside her parchment to use should she need it.
With her quill still in her hand she started to work on what her own MBTI Type meant. Hopefully she was doing this correctly.

Well this was somewhat interesting to say the least. Now to just find the proper runes that went with these words... Rylee stared at her parchment for a moments in thought before looking over the handout that was given to her to see which Runes would match up best.

Patrick quickly looked over at Professor Beryl when she mentioned he looked deep in though. He chuckles a bit which shook his broad shoulders. ”Uh, yeah I kinda am. The more I look at adaptable the more i wonder how well Laguz works for adaptable. She was looking through her book trying to find which rune would go with her words, but they all seemed to be reading together or something because she struggled with understanding the words, it was hard to take knowing first years were in the room seems to know how to do this class better than her. As she flipped the page again she noticed the professor and looked up.
"Well to be honest ma'am this isn't my best subject and the words confuse me. I mean my words are very much me, but trying to find the runes is what I'm struggling with." Which shouldn't be that hard being they were in front of her, but some of them she wasn't sure. "Like one of my words is Socialble and I can't find a rune with that. There is social success, does that work together or not? "
It was delightful seeing the younger ones in particular trying hard. Not that they needed any indepth knowledge of the runes in order to have a go at this particular task, but it was still lovely to see.
Stopping by another beginner student and reading her name and committing it to memory, Professor Beryl took a look over her work so far.
"Well you've certainly put some thought into this, well done. How are you finding it so far? Any difficulties?"
Avalon glanced up as Professor Beryl commented on her work. "Thank you, Professor," she said, giving her a smile. She put her quill down, resting it on her ink pot. "I only wish that I could come up with some more creative adjectives! I'm afraid mine are quite boring. But I do find it interesting how several different runes can apply to one trait!" She was certainly curious if traditional ancient rune interpretation was accompanied by such freedom of thought.

Let's get back to the lesson, Chae. Right. So.... This MBTI business was an introspective assessment tool, huh? How's it related to ancient runes then, this Hufflepuff was quite curious. Aurora listened to the Professor more about the correlation between this assessment and ancient runes. The connection between no-maj and wizarding knowledge, that's intriguing. Reading the handout deeply about the explanation, she circled the ESFP part which was according to the boot, was her. Hehehe, this type seemed quite accurate for her.
Getting the runes textbook, Aurora then tried her best to interpret the suitable rune that seemed associate with the runes.
"A good start, Miss Chae," Professor Beryl said, walking by and reading the girl's name off her parchment. "Perhaps you should elaborate your answers to explain why you picked each of those runes so that you have a record of it." She said with an encouraging smile.

"I think you should list Sowilo in association with 'warm'," he noted casually while glancing over his select four and considering his own options. "Or Ingwaz."

After a bit of reading, and writing and re-writing the runes, she again turned to Eiji, "does this sound right?"
Here was another industrious pair, on task and discussing their choices. Professor Beryl noted their names when she walked by their desks. "How are you getting on, Mr Rasting, Miss Renaldi?"

Though she didn't like the feeling that her whole personality was being reduced to four letters and a bunch of words, because clearly she was so much more than that.
After adding her name to the top of her parchment, the second year began her task. She thought the words "innovative" and “energetic” in particular were in line with her own characteristics. Looking through the handout again, she realised that most of the keywords were quite positive. But everyone had weaknesses, even awesome people like herself. So she decided to add a not-so-nice word to her list - “stubborn”. See? She DID recognise her problems and… tried to fix them wherever possible.
Next, Jade opened her rune dictionary and searched for runes that matched with her choice of words. She thought the creative aspect of Kenaz was related to the word “innovative”, perhaps Uruz could be associated with “energetic”? What about “stubborn”? The thing about these runes was that they did not perfectly match the MBTI personality traits and some of them just seemed completely random, like Ehwaz symbolising transportation. Tiwaz, associated with authority, could possibly imply stubbornness as well. Jade wrote all of this down on her piece of parchment before she forgot.

Innovative: Kenaz
Energetic: Uruz

Stopping by the next young girl, Carmine looked at her paper. Oh, no name? "Hello! How are you getting on? What's your name, Miss...?"

"Its always better to go with the regular meaning over the merkstave in these cases, however when runecasting there are times where the runes will come up merkstave and you will need to take that into account in your interpretation." Carmine said, eyes twinkling. Whether the children realised it or not, they were going exactly in the necessary direction for the rest of the school year's general curriculum - this line of thought would set them in good stead for later lessons. "And yes, it very much depends on the situation and interpretation. You have to learn to trust your intuition and practice how to read the runes so that finding meaning comes more naturally to you. I'll leave the pair of you to it, we have a few more minutes on this task before we'll move on. Nice work both of you." Professor Beryl said, moving along to check on more students.

"Stay after class please, Miss Castillo." Was all Professor Beryl said, giving the girl a knowing look and then moving on.

This wasn't particularly difficult, he had to admit, given that they were able to reference the book and everything, rather than rely on their memory of the runes. It was mostly a question of staying on task.

Glancing around, she looked for other campaigners who might want to discuss with her, but for the life of her, couldn't remember who else the boot had announced her letters for.

That way you'll have the reference there for later too. What about each of those runes felt right for you?
"You'll get used to your school schedule soon enough I'm sure. But if you do have any trouble, come and see me in the hospital wing, won't you?" Professor Beryl said kindly. Wouldn't want the tiredness to be an ongoing thing! "Good insight and thought in your work, keep it up."

"That's very much alright, Miss McCarthy." Carmine assured her. "You don't have to be the best. The Study of Ancient Runes is a journey, I'm still on mine too." She listened to the girl's question. "Try not to lock yourself in too tightly to the exact words, my dear, this task is about interpretation and intuition. Lets try something and see if it helps you. Sociable could be considered friendly, a focus on interpersonal relationships and fellowship. Some runes that have related meanings to these things are Gebo for personal relationships and generosity, Wunjo for joy and pleasure in fellowship, Mannaz for your attitudes towards others and theirs in return, or Fehu for social success. So many options as you can see! So lets take those runes out of your rune set, and I want you to hold each one in turn as you think about the question and the associations, and see which feels most right for you. Lets see if you are receptive to the energy of the runes guiding you." Professor Beryl instructed in her warm and soothing way. Oh circe, Eloise didn't think she would be walking around and would look at her notes. Since there were a million other kids in here. She looked her well terrible notes and up and Professor Beryl.
"Yeeeeah, that's the hard part. I was thinking mannaz for sociable because it being about relationships and being about social concerns and stuff. Easy for that one. Maybe Laguz for perceptive because of intuition and revealing and all that. Hmm....and Jera for the last one because you need to be bold to bring change i think...maybe...i don't know."

Professor Beryl. Gunnar tried to commit that to memory by repeating it a couple times in his head. He knew he'd learn it soon enough, but might as well get that bit out of the way so he could focus on a class he actually liked.
But he still remained unsure about how this Myers Briggs and random letters and psychological preferences in world perception had to do with the Elder Futhark, even after the explanation bit. Though, he'd come to realize that different teachers definitely had their different methods.
The fifteen year old read over the handout, writing out his relevant parts in his notes. And once he read over what pertained to him, he could agree that much of it sounded like him.
SPOILER!!: Gunnar's Notes
Gunnar McCarthy
5th year, Slytherin
ISTJ
Introversion (I)
Introverts are "inward-turning" and tend to be thought-oriented, enjoy deep and meaningful social interactions, and feel recharged after spending time alone.
Sensing (S)
People who prefer sensing tend to pay a great deal of attention to reality, particularly to what they can learn from their own senses. They tend to focus on facts and details and enjoy getting hands-on experience.
Thinking (T)
People who prefer thinking place a greater emphasis on facts and objective data. They tend to be consistent, logical, and impersonal when weighing a decision.
Judging (J)
Those who lean toward judging prefer structure and firm decisions.
So which of the traits related most to him and what runes could be associated with them? Gunnar took a moment to allow his eyes to skim the list of traits again before choosing five - Reserved, Controlled, Pragmatic, Deliberate, and Hardworking. He jotted those down in his notes and then consulted his textbook to find some relevant runes.
SPOILER!!: Gunnar's Notes cont'd
ISTJ Traits and Corresponding Runes
Reserved - Algiz (protection, defense, warning, the act of drawing upon inner strength to actively protect our emotional well-being and our immediate surroundings)
Controlled - Kenaz (controlled energy)
Pragmatic - Ansuz (for wise decisions, balanced, instinctive, primal energy tempered with the discipline and experience)
Deliberate - Isa (patience and reflection, a time of rest before action)
Hardworking - Thurisaz (discipline and focus, the sacrifice that one must make in order to make progress in life)
That.... really took a while for Gunnar to work his way through the textbook and examine the different meanings for each rune and associate them with his personality traits. He was happy with them for the most part, though he remained unsure about using Kenaz for the 'controlled' trait. Even though controlled energy was listed, he wasn't so sure the rest of the meanings for Kenaz really fit. And, he really felt like Teiwaz should fit within his personality trait set given all of its meaning, but where? Hmm. He pulled that rune out of his bag and turned it over and over in his hand as he looked over his notes again and considered things.

The more Nettie thought about her result, the more she was certain that the boot had made some sort of mistake. Maybe Nettie in her first year was more of a commander but...a natural born leader? Ruthless level of rationality? She was the exact OPPOSITE of rational. But it also said she was determined, and ruthless in her pursuit of success...that seemed pretty accurate. It was one of the reasons the hat had ALMOST put her in Slytherin, if she remembered correctly. She was also extroverted which was definitely true. Sometimes a little TOO much so.
Taking out her parchment, she bit her lip for a moment as she thought about which runes she thought fit well with her sorting. After some time, she scribbled down some thoughts on her parchment.

Eihwaz - Strength and determination, able to set sights on a target and achieve goals Raidho - A journey, growth, seeing the best path forward for yourself Nauthiz - Endurance and survival, facing your fears Jera - promise of success, high hopes and expectations

This was...tedious. And not entirely in a good way either but he had started it and it would drive him insane if he did not finish it...and he had to give it an honest effort because he never did any school work at half speed. Well...usually at least.
Probably was that he was a bit too literal with this, at least when t came to himself, and it was taking him an embarrassingly long time trying to find a rune he felt made an appropriate fit for 'hardworking'. At first when he was reviewing Fehu he considered it an option, but that was more the manifestation of hard work, the result, and not so much in the moment. Same with Jera. Though...Uruz didn't seem so bad. It was the untamed potential that convinced him for the most part. Maybe. He would just roll with that for now...and then assigned Eihwaz to 'realism' because of its connotations with honesty, reliability, and trustworthiness. Was how he felt realism could be interpreted....but scanning down the page again reminded him of Tiwaz's existence and he felt that even more appropriate - analysis and rationality, obviously. For the traits meant to be weaknesses, he exclusively looked at the merkstave meaning of each rune and felt...somewhat confident in his selection.

This had been remarkably easier to do for Missa than it had for himself.

After a bit of reading, and writing and re-writing the runes, she again turned to Eiji, "does this sound right?"
Rubbing his face a moment, hoping to soothe the annoyance from his brow, Eiji glanced over at Missa again when she asked him to look things over. "Looks...okay," he nodded, though he paused at her 'over thinking option'. "I think you should at Tiwaz in merkstave. It can mean creative flows are blocked, mental paralysis, and over-analysis. You have one that represents a rune for the solution for your weakness," he smiled encouragingly. "Already thinking ahead."
Smirking affectionately, his attention was drawn to Professor Beryl as she made her way around observing everyone's work. "Getting on fine, professor."
Probably. He was far more confident in his girlfriend's work than he was his own.

Aaron grinned at the professor, just realizing that he hadn't actually greeted her. "Sorry about that, Professor. I hope your morning has been wonderful so far." Manners, see? He had those!
.... Pressing his lips together, the Hufflepuff accepted one of the handouts and quickly began reading over it. He was still listening, obviously, jotting down the occasional bit of wisdom. This was a lesson unlike any previous Runes class he'd ever sat through, if not a bit ingenious. Personality types were interesting all on their own, but throwing in the runes aspect seemed to breathe new life into his favorite subject. He'd never heard of this being done.
After a bit, he stood to peruse the collected Runes texts, wanting to cross-reference his work (since he was setting an example now, or something). And it surprised him that a couple were written by his late grandfather... It was a no-brainer to select those, and a happy, contented feeling blossomed in his chest. In fact, he beamed the entire way back to his seat; planning to waste no time in getting started.
For many silent moments, Aaron wrote, erased, crossed out, rewrote, and questioned each of his own answers. He'd read a passage from one book, check it in another, change his mind, rewrite his original answer again... He was eventually forced to turn to a fresh sheet in his journal with a distressed huff, studiously rewriting the entire page.
No complaints, though. It was nice to be challenged in this way! The sixth year really had to consider each answer...
Enthusiastic: Thurisaz, Ansuz THURISAZ: Enthusiasm, self-empowerment, chaos, active defensive force, breaker of resistance, and destructive storms. ANSUZ: A revealing message or insight, communication. Signals, inspiration, enthusiasm, speech, true vision, power of words and naming. Blessings, the taking of advice. Good health, harmony, truth, wisdom.
Passionate: Kenaz, Uruz KENAZ: Vision, revelation, knowledge, creativity, inspiration, technical ability. Vital fire of life, harnessed power, fire of transformation and regeneration. Power to create your own reality, the power of light. Open to new strength, energy, and power now. Passion. URUZ: [1] Uruz is the rune of the inner-King and inner-Queen. We can assert our right to exist and be free in the very same primal authority that the aurochs did theirs. It is the will to live passionate and free. [2] energy, passion, vitality, instinct, wildness, the unconscious, primitive mind, irrationality, shamanic experience, rite of passage.
Sociable: Fehu, Mannaz FEHU: [1] New beginnings, social success, foresight, energy, travel, money, control. [2] Promotion of personal and social evolution. Mannaz: [1] Significator, self, family, community, relationships, social concerns. [2] To represent a specific person or group of people; to establish social relationships.
Unconventional: Ingwaz, Berkano INGWAZ: Rune of isolation or separation in order to create a space or place where the process of transformation into higher states of being can occur. BERKANO: Rune of continued growth and continual rebirth or renewal in all things. The rune of becoming.
Supportive: Gebo, Wunjo GEBO: Love and partnership. Forgiveness, gift, skill, ability or talent. WUNJO: joy, perfection, the art of correct wishing, correct application of the will, well-being, contentment, hope, expectation, relationship, family, bonding, trusted kinsfolk, shared ideals or aims, group harmony, symbols of shared identity, optimism, cooperative effort, like-mindedness, friendship
It took about 20 minutes with his head down, to finally complete it... "Professor?"

Tina nodded in reply as Professor Beryl answered her question. Oh, okay… she guessed it made sense that the boot would need the motion of hopping to wake it up, though the answer raised another question in her mind. Why didn't the sorting hat, which was most likely older than that boot, also need a jarring motion such as hopping to wake it up? Had a different type of magic been used to create it? She was tempted to ask but decided against it so as not to get too off track. She could always ask later or try to look up the answer on her own.
She picked up her quill, poised to take notes as Professor Beryl started speaking. So they weren't going to use runes to give an object sentience? That was a shame, though Tina had to admit she found the whole MBTI personality types concept interesting… even if she didn't see what it had to do with Ancient Runes. Oh, so that's how the subjects related? The more she listened to the professor's explanation, the more sense it made. In fact, this activity sounded pretty fun - much more so than the usual memorizing ridiculously long and complicated galdrs!
Tina looked over her handout, paying special attention to the traits listed under her personality type. Thoughtful, organized, reserved… that sounded like her. She wasn't sure about the innovative or forward-thinking part, though. She copied the traits on the handout onto her parchment underneath her name and personality type. Now came the task of whittling the list down to 3-5 traits to work with.
In the end, Tina decided to go with the five traits she felt applied to her most. Then she went to retrieve one of the books from the front so she could cross reference and add additional information to her list as needed. Now came the hard part: finding the right runes to represent the traits. As she pored over her runes textbook, Tina found quite a few possibilities for the first trait on her list. Of course, the most obvious representation for “determined” was Nauthiz - it even had that exact word listed in the association! But upon further reading, Tina thought that might be a better choice for “independent” as it also represented self-reliance and self initiated change. She decided to list Nauthiz under independent because it was the only rune she thought could possibly fit there and went with Uruz for determination. The rune represented strength, tenacity, and action… all things Tina associated with determination.
After writing down the runes and a couple of notes explaining the reasoning behind her choices, Tina looked over her list of traits again. The next one was “imaginative”. She knew just what to do for that one! Kenaz represented the power to create one's own reality, and that was basically what imagination was, right? There was also the associations with vision, inspiration, and creativity, which sort of went along with imagination… or at least they did in Tina's mind. Using her imagination always made her feel more inspired and creative. She smiled to herself, thinking back to Flamel's lesson on Kenaz and Isa. Maybe the associations with vision and creativity were the reason she had an easy time with Kenaz last term?
The next trait on Tina's list was a lot harder to match. After reading and re-reading over her textbook, she went with Isa to represent “reserved” due to its association with turning inward. It was probably a bit of a stretch, but at least in Tina's opinion, being reserved meant turning inward on oneself. Of all the runes on her list, this was the association she felt least confident about, but none of the others in her book seemed to even remotely fit the trait. Maybe she should've chosen something a little easier to interpret, even if it wasn't a trait she personally connected with.
As Tina was busy second guessing her interpretation, she overheard Professor Beryl say they only had five minutes left. Ugh, there wasn't time to go back and change her answer. She had to move on to her last trait - and fast! Luckily this one was a little easier to match. In her textbook, she found a couple of runes that could represent “organized”, but she thought Dagaz would be the best fit. Organization gave her the security and certainty, two associations with Dagaz, that she needed to function, and the association of clarity fit with Tina's mindset in an organized state. Once she'd finished writing her final rune choice and the reasoning behind it, Tina set down her quill and awaited further instructions.
Determined - Uruz (represents strength, tenacity, and action. Determination involves taking action and requires strength and tenacity in the face of setbacks)
Independent - Nauthiz (represents self reliance and self-initiated change. Self-reliance and self-initiated change are a big part of independence.)
Imaginative - Kenaz (represents vision, inspiration, creativity/power to create one's own reality. Imagination is essentially the power to create one's own reality and can be used as a tool to foster inspiration and creativity.)
Reserved - Isa? (represents turning inward, and one could argue that being reserved means turning inward)
Organized - Dagaz (represents daylight clarity, security and certainty. Organization brings about security and certainty, and I feel a sense of mental clarity when things are organized)

Maybe Laguz for perceptive because of intuition and revealing and all that. Hmm....and Jera for the last one because you need to be bold to bring change i think...maybe...i don't know."
She explained writing them down anyway. At least she talked herself into some answers. Doesn't knows if they are right or there is a right answer.
"I think you know more than you realise, Miss Fairfield. Trust your intuition. Mannaz and Laguz are particularly good associations. I am glad you are thinking outside of the box as that is the purpose of this exercise -to allow your intuition to guide your understanding- but in this case I would say perhaps rather than Jera you might choose the courage and tenacity associated with Uruz, or the self-reliance and willpower of Nauthiz as a closer association to that boldness trait. If you take those two runes out of your rune set and hold each in your hand, see which one feels more right for you." Professor Beryl said, encouragingly.

And then looked over to Patrick. Ah right, they were the same type. She passed her parchment over to him to have a look. "Seems like we both came up with Kenaz." She grinned. "Uruz and Ehwaz, I guess. I'm not sure about enthusiastic what to associate that with but oooh... isn't there one for joy or something???" BIG QUESTION MARK here.
"There is one for joy." Carmine agreed with a hint of a smile, watching the girl slide her parchment over to Mr Dooley to discuss their work, "I'm sure you can find it in your dictionary if you look closely. There are also Ansuz and Thurisaz which represent two different aspects of enthusiasm." Carmine summoned one of the extra resource books to her hand, and lay it in front of the girl. It was a well-thumbed volume, and she felt it might be particularly useful for this particular search for meaning.
"I suggest you compare all the meanings with those in your own rune dictionary, then pull each rune from your rune set and hold them in your hand one at a time, focus on the meaning and trust your intuition about which feels most right." She was sure Miss Walsh had enough presence of mind to make a choice between these three.

Mr McCarthy. Siblings with Miss McCarthy? Carmine looked back toward the young blonde girl she'd been working with not so long ago. Yes they had to be siblings, the connection was unmistakable.
"I'm glad to see you taking a hands on approach, Mr McCarthy." With handling his runes to help aid his insight, which by his notes she could see was already substantial. Perhaps he was a natural in this topic? She smiled encouragingly.

Taking out her parchment, she bit her lip for a moment as she thought about which runes she thought fit well with her sorting. After some time, she scribbled down some thoughts on her parchment.
Another one working hard. Carmine rather thought that young Miss Gladin had a specific thinking face and she seemed to be employing it quite handily in that moment. She was almost loathe to disturb her processing. "How are you getting on, Miss Gladin?"

It took about 20 minutes with his head down, to finally complete it... "Professor?"
Her morning had been lovely. And it was still lovely, given her class was so well-behaved and working so well at this first task. Young Mr Botros certainly seemed to be working hard, she hadn't wanted to disturb him given how intently he seemed to be focusing, but when he spoke up she made her way over to his desk.
The Botros connection had also not escaped her, if this young man was indeed related to that esteemed professor, who was a premiere name in the discipline of Ancient Runes with an impact that Carmine expected would last through several lifetimes and beyond.
"Yes, Mr Botros?"

Miss Dantes was another who had been working industriously during the activity, and Carmine made sure to work her way back around to the girl when she had put her quill down.
She took a quick look over her work and smiled with pleasure. "Well done, Miss Dantes. You seem to have an innate understanding of the task and how to make these intuitive leaps in meaning associations. Lets keep stretching that intuition muscle as you grow along your rune journey." It was clear she had put a lot of thought into her work thusfar. "I think you are right to question the rune Isa, but more importantly, if it does not feel a comfortable choice for you, you need to trust your intuition." She tapped that section of the girl's parchment and gave her an encouraging smile. "You can certainly think on it and come back to it later."

Thurisaz when reversed or merkstave can have a meaning of stubbornness, and Uruz is the ox rune.... have you heard the phrase 'stubborn as an ox'? How about 'bull-headed?'" Carmine made her way back to the front of the class, quite satisfied with the work she'd seen so far.
"Alright everyone, thank you for your efforts so far. Its hard work stretching that intuition muscle! Have your quills ready please, and take notes." She gave them a moment to prepare themselves and then wrote on the blackboard: "Runic Correlations".
"As you have all seen, the runes in the Elder Futhark have meaning. Some of you are familiar with invoking the magic of individual runes to perform some task or another, but the runes have another application known as runecasting. Runecasting is a form of symbolic magic. Runes can be cast to find answers to questions and to gain an understanding of a given situation and where one is on that path. Runecasting is not divination." She paused to write that on the board (leaving a space for something else to go above it) and then underlined it for emphasis. Important.
"It couples the subconscious and the magical ability of a witch or wizard to examine cause and effect, and indicate a likely outcome or deeper understanding. You may say instead, that runecasting situational assessment tool, where different spreads are the ‘tools’ for different assessment ‘jobs’." Professor Carmine said, looking around at the class to take note of who was paying attention.
"Questions asked of the runes can be employed as a way of reflecting upon the self at a moment in time, just as sorting and categorizing via personality assessments like the MBTI can be a way to reflect upon the self holistically." That was one connection between the two, but not the purpose of today's lesson.
"More importantly for today's purposes, many disciplines which feature symbols that are representative of meaning in this manner can be correlated to the Elder Futhark. When runecasting there is a need for intuitive interpretation of any given rune. It is important that you don't limit yourself only to meanings given in one rune dictionary or another or be too literal in your interpretations." She paused for the slower notetakers to catch up.
"The process of drawing correlations of rune meanings with other interpretive systems prime us for applying our intuition to runecasting." Which WAS the purpose of today's lesson, as they would be working on runecasting later in the term.
"There are various runic correlations -also known as rune correspondences- worth considering. Other than the MBTI, I want you to think about other systems that might have a correspondence with runes in relation to meaning." She said, pausing and looking around the room. "What rune correspondences do you know about? What other interpretive, or symbol=meaning systems have you come across that you think could be correlated with runes?"

Runecasting is not Divination
Runecasting is a form of symbolic magic
Runes can be cast to find answers to questions and to gain an understanding of a given situation and where one is on that path.
It couples the subconscious and the magical ability of a witch or wizard to examine cause and effect, and indicate a likely outcome or deeper understanding.
ooc: Whew! The mini activity portion is over. You CAN still respond to my posts and to each other if you haven't yet, for as long as we are still in the question section of the class (which is now!). When the main activity begins you'll no longer be able to catch up on the mini activity in the interest of clarity.
You have approximately 24 hours (but not less!) to have your character answer this question (Name rune correspondences). Please give only ONE answer! protip: if you can't think of any new answers and Google doesn't help you out, you can have your character agree with/elaborate on someone else's response.
ALSO if your charrie's name isn't on the list in the first post, let me know! I probably overlooked a few people by accident!
As always, any questions or concerns, feel free to PM or VM me.

Eniola smiled at the girl. “I used Eihwaz because the characteristics are similar to that of someone I’d search for in a friend or family. Ingwaz is similar because it takes on similar characteristics and talking about family love. I think it’s should be fine, but the professor would know more.” Turning back in her seat she went back over the textbook. She sure hopes that helped the younger girl. She’d seen her around before. In Arithmancy class I think. Shrugging her shoulders and moving on. There were lots of students here. Not that big a deal.
Ellie turned around in her seat as Eniola of Hufflepuff answered her question. Professor Beryl thought she had associated well but responding to Eniola's comment about using Eihwaz couldn't hurt. Furrowing her brows in deep thought Ellie said. "Thank you Eniola. I suppose the Eihwaz rune can work too but it wasn't my first thought. I connect Ingwaz more with love and warmth than that i do Ingwaz." She turned back to read in her textbook.

Several minutes later Professor Beryl moved the lesson onwards and Ellie noted down what appeared on the blackboard as she listened to the lecture. Runic correspondences/other systems similiar to runes. Thoughtfully Ellie raised her hand to answer tentatively not sure if she was totally off base or correct in her thinking. "Would the Tarot cards system be a good corresponding system Professor Beryl? Like the rune Uruz corresponds with the tarot card for strength?" Satisfied with her answer Ellie took down her hand and focused on taking down more notes.
