Default Transfiguration Lesson I - Always Take The Weather With You

If you care to glance out of the corridor windows on your way to the Transfiguration classroom on this mid-October morning, you’ll notice that the sky is typically dreary for this kind of year -- grey and overcast. Don’t let that get you down in the dumps though, Professor Darlington has quite the lesson planned.

Upon entering the classroom, you’ll be surprised (or not, this is Hogwarts after all) to find that you haven’t walked into a classroom at all. The classroom has been charmed into what appears to be a large, open clearing outside on the grounds. It’s still morning, but in here the sky is a clear pale blue and there isn’t a cloud in sight.

The only thing out of the ordinary you’ll see, is the portable blackboard in the middle of the clearing and this is where Professor Darlington is standing and waiting, arms crossed and expression neutral.

Well, don’t dilly daddle! Come on in and find a spot to stand.

OOC: Welcome everyone! Class has started! Come on in and let's have fun! Remember, although this is the first RPed Transfiguration class of the term, your kiddos will have had lessons with Professor Darlington already. We’ll move on in about 24 hours.

Torii watched the pretty, white snow, an action that would have likely costed her the duel had this been real. She had to get with it! Come on, Torii! You can do better than this! She pushed the thoughts of snow to the back of her mind and replaced them with pelting rain. "Tempestas Horribilis!" she called out, flicking her wrist and pointing her wand at her opponent's cloud.

Being from California, Torii didn't do snow too well. Rain either, for that matter.

Oh, drat. Her beautiful snow was being drowned out by Torii's rainstorm. Chloe squeaked in protest as rain poured down inside her hood, and she immediately cast a nonverbal Protego. Oh, wow. Wow. That was probably the fastest and best she'd ever done that!

Drowned rat it was. "Tempestas Horribilis!" Get 'er.

Oh, hey! It had worked! Torii kind of liked the beautiful snow and had hated seeing it turn to rain, but it'd had to be done. She admired the Head Girl's use of the Shield Charm, too, which reminded Torii that it could indeed be used.

... They were taking on who? Nettie? Oh, Nettie! Right. Torii knew her! Well, knew of her. There was a big difference there that only somebody like the new girl would understand. The Slytherin watched as Nettie was drowned out by the Head Girl. Should Torii cast on her, as well? Nahhh...

On second thought, she did wonder what the outcome would be for a near-about monsoon to be pelting down on the slightly younger girl. She also had no doubt that if she didn't seize the chance, the spell would be coming for her next. The fourth year did her best to maintain her already-summoned cloud while she turned her wand on their new, poor unsuspecting partner. "Tempestas Horribilis!" she called out, sending more rain toward Nettie.

The thought of being able to create bad weather was quite exciting. Rain, snow, and hail. She didn't enjoy being outside in those conditions, and the rainmac made things much better in the conditions, but being inside and curled up with a book or some crafts was always a good day.

She was ready to cast another cloud, and then make it rain, but first she needed a partner. People paired up quick enough, and Hanna spotted Septimus and Tina.

"Do you mind if I join you both?" she asked her fellow Ravenclaws.

Hanna got ready to cast her cloud first. Pointing her wand above her head, picturing a soggy grey cloud, she said with a clear, purposeful voice, "Nubecula." Like before, wisps came from the end of her wand and formed a cloud above her head.

Septimus ran the incantation over and over, first in his head and then aloud to practice for casting while he waited for a response. Thankfully it wasn’t long before a housemate was coming towards him, answering his question. “Great!” the fourth year remarked with a polite smile. “I’m Septimus,” he added since it wasn’t like every Ravenclaw knew everyone else, even though she looked to be around the same age or just a year apart.

Perfecting by end of class…no pressure.

The best be getting to it then. “So we’re trying to control each other’s clouds to get the other wet…right,” he mused, checking he got the concept as he took out his wand. “Nubecula!” he cast, pointing up at the ceiling sky to create his own cloud again. Now to be at the ready for the results of this weather duel.

Tina was glad she found a partner when she did, especially after hearing the professor's words. Join in with anyone? No thanks! Sorry, Professor, but she wasn't going to set herself up for rejection. She blinked at the lost cause comment. Wow, that was... harsh. If she thought that, why even turn the activity into a duel? This wasn't DADA! Whatever, there was no point in complaining.

Tina returned Septimus's smile with a small one of her own. "Nice to meet you, Septimus," she said. Well, technically she'd seen him around classes and the common room, but she didn't know his name. "I'm Tina." She nodded in reply to what he said next. "Yeah, that's pretty much it " Needlessly overcomplicated activity, in her opinion! Before she could get started, someone else (Hanna) had asked to join their group. "Sure, that's fine with me," she said, casting a quick look at Septimus. She hoped he'd be okay with it too!

Time to get started then. Tina drew her own wand and pointed it high above her head. She already knew she could conjure a cloud, but this time she wanted to try conjuring a cloud in a specific shape. Probably best to start out with something simple, not too far removed from a regular cloud shape, something like... a bludger! In her mind's eye, Tina envisioned a fluffy, round cloud. "Nubecula!" she said, concentrating hard on the image. She looked up to see if it worked; the cloud was a bit lumpy, but she supposed it looked a little like a bludger if you squint. Oh well, she'd have more time to practice that later.

For now, she just wanted to get this stupid weather duel over with! Nothing against her partners. she just didn't like dueling. it was the kind of unpredictable activity that set her teeth on edge! "Ready?" she asked, giving her opponents (and herself) a minute to prepare before she cast her spell. She decided she would try conjuring snow first; hail seemed too dangerous, and most everybody was doing rain. With a look of intense concentration, she visualized the cold white crystals gently falling from Septimus's cloud. She aimed her wand with a careful flick of the wrist and cast, "Tempestas Horribilus!' Did that work? She was almost sure she saw a light dusting of snowflakes begin to fall.

"Hi Tina," she said, having caught the name before. "Hey Septimus. Thanks heaps." She didn't enjoy the prospect of being Hanna-no-group.

With her own cloud above her head, and now a group, it was time to learn the spell. Perhaps she should have done that before she asked to join a group. Was she unprepared now, having not even said the spell? A quick "tem-PES-tas hor-RIB-ih-lis," was said a few times under her breath. Being that the wand movement was only a slight flick of the wrist as she pointed towards the cloud, rather than anything too intricate and complicated, she decided she was ready.

She watched as Tina cast the spell to Septimus' cloud, and pointed her own wand at Tina's. "Tempestas Horribilis," she said, giving her wand a slight flick with her wrist.

Oh. Right. They’d need one of those jacket things. … What were they even supposed to be doing? She hadn’t been listening…. Annnnd she was also pretty sure she was going to end up in detention or loosing points by the end of this lesson.

Blinking up at her brother, from where she was still hugging him, she took a step backwards. She was now sure that Professor Darlington really didn’t like her. Looking at her feet instead of around the class, she rolled her wand between her fingers before she took the jacket Cameron was giving her. Thumbing the material she contemplated walking out, after all she had only mucked everything up so far… but that wouldn’t get her anywhere and Cameron would help her.

At least Professor Darlington had gotten that part right, Cam would always help her.

Taking a deep breath, she nodded and raised her wand. Okay, focus on wispy clouds. Focus. Focus on how Cameron is saying it, and copy him. “Nubecula...” Soft, floaty wisps left her wand, though they were nothing like she needed - they were also better than anything she had managed so far. Trying again and again and again - she got her cloud to form on the fifth time with encouragement from her brother.

Wasn’t he the best person ever?

Cameron waited patiently for his sister to conjure up a cloud herself, his eyes darting back and forth between the people working near him and Holly, giving her the occasional encouraging smile. "Almost." Despite clearly being rattled by what had happened earlier AND her age, he was actually quite proud of her magical abilities so far.

Especially when a cloud appeared right above her.

"You did it!" WELL DONE! "Now, are you ready for some rain?" He didn't really wait for verbal confirmation but figured his asking was warning enough. "Tempestas Horribilus." He said, pointing his wand at Holly's cloud above her head. Enjoy the rain, sis.

she replied with a smile. When Caolan performed his spell, Daisy replied with a non-verbal "Protego!" which resulted in the light rain not quite reaching her.

She then aimed her wand at her partner's cloud and thought about a small hailstorm. “Tempestas Horribilis” Daisy said with a flick of her wrist. Soon tiny marble-sized hailstones began to form above Caolan's head.
At one point in the term would he be able to stop having to introduce himself and just be your average regular student? Soon he hoped, these introductions were beginning to get tedious. Chloe was complimentary however and he smiled genuinely in response. “Thanks. It’s Irish” In case you couldn’t tell with his accent or anything.. “It’s nice to meet you too.” He would’ve tipped his hat if he had one.

Aww, come on..

Where was the fun in blocking the spell? He had only let a small amount of rain fall from the cloud. Spoil sport. He shrugged and chose not to block the spell that she did. Not because he wasn’t capable of doing so but because he was already covered in snow anyway and he had this stupid rain mac on and he might as well test it. The hailstones fell on his head and he adjusted his hood to make sure that none of them could ruin his hair.

Right.. What to do next?

She had made a cloud!

She had managed!

………. Rain? Wait. What? No sooner at her brother congratulated her than he distracted her. Rain, oh no. What was she supposed to do? What was the spell for the sheild? She didn’t know! They hadn’t been taught it yet…

And within seconds of her trying to figure out what she could do to stop herself from getting soaked -- she was drenched. Her usually bouncy curls, clung to her face - much longer, darker and heavier than before . The water poured off the jacket, puddling around her feet and soaking through her socks from the holes in her shoes. Blinking water away from her eyes, and utterly distracted by the way water droplets were running down her back, she shivered.

Urgh.

Shivering under the torrent of rain that just kept pouring, she tried to blink water away from her eyes and looked up at the perfect cloud above her brother. “Tempestas Horribilus.” Nothing. Frowning and trying again, she focused on rain. “Tempestas Horribilus.” Still nothing.

"Tempestas Horribilus!” She said again, focusing as much as she could on the idea of rain coming from that clous. Rainrainrainrain! She thought, and although it was only a trickle of rain, enough to maybe dampen his hair and get some rain drops on his own raincoat - she had managed!!!

So they had to make bad weather clouds and send them to their classmates? That sounded simple enough, and Madison was sure that she would have no REAL problem doing that, except for the fact that she didn't yet have a partner or a group.

People were pairing off, and she was there on her own, and might have to work with the professor if nothing else. Nothing against the woman, but she would rather work with classmates. Yep.

"Anyone want to partner me?" she asked, hoping that someone would notice her.

Patrick watched with panic as he saw everyone pairing up to get through the new task he heard Madison one of the lions ask for a partner. “Want to work with me Madison?” He hoped she would say yes because he would hate to work with the professor or alone.

Smiling he tried to summon a rain cloud, “Temest Horribilis” he thought of a small mist. He hated mist. Didn’t everyone hate mist? He saw a few drops squeeze out of the could on his own head. Well that didn’t work. “Clearly I could use some help” he grimaced while rubbing his shoulder.

Madison smiled when Patrick adked if he could partner with her. ”Of course!” She had a feeling that this would be rather fun. Now that they could begin, she pointed her wand above her head. ”Nubecula!” Wisps of air came out of the wand and formed together in a fluffy cloud.

Perfect.

Now to send some bad weather towards Patrick. He seemed to be having a bit of trouble though. ”Maybe you just need to concentrate a little harder? You’re pretty close to forming rain.” So Madison was sure that he would be able to manage it.

Either that or weather as a form of concealment, but she’d found that the lesson had continued before she could suggest that. Plus, she was secretly glad that Chloe had gotten the answer to her earlier question too.

They could conjure a raincloud. Sort of. It was more like influencing a cloud to develop rain, or snow apparently. Either way, she applied herself to adding the new spell underneath the cloud conjuring spell in her notes, trying to stay away from the others who had already begun practicing. Time to see what she could do, although she kept herself from conjuring her cloud as she noticed younger Chloe looking around quietly.

Instead, she repeated the new incantation under her breath as she walked over to the younger Claw and gave her a smile. “Did you need a partner?
She was about to give up as she put her raincoat on when a sixth year came over to her. Her mouth dropping open a little before shutting it quickly and nodding. [b] "Yes that would be lovely"[b] Chloe always got a little tongue-tied when it came to the older students being near her. They were all just so pretty and Chloe got caught up in that and forgot what she was doing.

When it finally came back to her that she was in a lesson her cheeks went pink and she tried to say herself, "I. ahh, made the clouds, but now we need to do this other spell."

What was it again?

"Tempestas Horribilis... I think it is, we have to think about weather or something." Her brain was not helping her out and she wanted to look cool in front of the older kids not stupid. "Like the snow, but we have rain things on so maybe more rain?" She didn't really know and she wasn't seeming like she did either, Chloe was not good at faking anything.

Oh look…he had gotten another response, this time from Hanna, a housemate Septimus was more familiar with given they were yearmates. “Nope…don’t mind at all Hanna,” he assured her, even as Tina was accepting her as well. Three worked just as well as two given they WERE allowed to work in groups and not just duos. In truth, he felt it made it more fun that way. It meant he and Tina weren’t always just going to shoot the spell back and both at each other.

Though she had shot the spell at his cloud first.

White flecks were landing on his rain mac, the boy rain arm slightly to confirm as he looked closer before looking up. Only to get a snowflake or two in the face. “Nice,” Septimus complimented Tina while her own cloud was being spelled. Guess that gave him Tina’s cloud at his first target, the fourth year raisin his wand and taking aim. His mind trying to imagine the results he wanted out of it as he cast “Tempestas Horribilis!”

Then he cast the same spell all over his body, section by section, trying (and very likely failing) to cover himself entirely with the spell. "There. I should be waterproof now."

At the very least, his hair was protected, and that was what mattered.

"I'd just like to try and avoid snow," Abra added, hinting heavily to Jackson and hoping he'd get what he was saying. Not that he'd be mad or even upset if there was snow, just very... very cold. "But I guess we should get started, right?" He waited for a few moments for Jackson to indeed get ready, before pointing his own wand up at the sky again. "Nubecula!"

As before, a cloud appeared up in the air. Perhaps not as good as the cloud he had conjured before, but that had been the combined effort of multiple spells, after all. Next time, he'd make it better.

Now, concentrating hard on the mental image of rain pelting down at Jackson, Abra - still with his wand pointed at the cloud - flicked his wrist and cast, "Tempestas Horribilis!" And down came......!

... A light drizzle. Hm. Okay. Well.

Baby steps.
He hadn’t thought that Abra lacked the skills or anything, Jackson just liked making things easier on others. When Abra enchanted himself, Jackson smiled and nodded. “Yeah, hopefully that’ll do it!” Jackson got himself ready, and watched as the cloud appeared above him. Jackson nodded encouragingly, watching as the rain started to fall on him. Jackson didn’t use a lot of product in his hair so he didn’t mind the drizzle. “Nice, mate! Good start good start.” And now it was his own turn.

Jackson had heard his fellow Prefect’s preference, and decided to have a little bit of fun. Because why not?! “Snow you said, right? You got it bud, it’s gonna be a bloody blizzard in here.” And with a wink, he looked at the spot his cloud would soon occupy and began to concentrate. “Nubecula!” he cast, quite more confident than earlier. The wisps flew out the end of his wand and whirled their way together to make a pretty decent cloud, if he did say so himself. He went over the newer spell in his head a couple of times before saying it aloud. “Tempestas Horribilis!”

It was rain he had been after. And rain he received. He watched as rain poured out of the cloud and he had to laugh a bit. “Well, with your charm choice, I thought I’d be nice… Here, wanna try snow or hail on me? Let me just…” Jackson brought his wand back up. “Protego!” and held it, so he didn’t get pelted to death by hail or something. “No sharp icicles please…” Heh heh… but really though.

The first reaction that her question had received had surprised Stasya a little, but then it was kind of cute how Chloe was reacting too. It made her want to reassure her that he wasn’t anyone to be scared of, even if she’d been taller than most of her yearmates nearly her entire time at Hogwarts and then also now was a prefect. She was just Stasya, creature enthusiast, baker and altogether probably the gentlest Gryffindor she knew. At least, she imagined most of her housemates didn’t worry half as much as she did about the littlest things. Either way, she didn’t think she was someone to be in awe of.

The statement about the clouds made her smile a little, though. “I see that. But I should probably conjure up one of my own too. Just so the professor knows I’m paying attention,” she replied softly, before pointing her wand over her head and repeating the cloud spell while focusing on the image of a decent sized cloud. “Nubecula.”

Cloud floating overhead, she smiled at the little Claw again. “Mhm,” she murmured, verifying the spell incantation she’d been practicing not long before. “I think all spells involve concentrating on what we’re trying to create.” So that meant they needed to concentrate on weather. “If you want to do rain, we can do rain.” Others had made snow, but the point about the rain macs did make sense. Rain macs didn’t really do much against cold.

“Tempestas Horribilis!,” she cast, pointing her wand up at her cloud again and imagining it growing dark and heavy with rain. Storm cloud, even. Maybe. She didn’t want to conjure up a flood or anything, and as she felt drops start falling she felt confident she hadn’t gone too far.

Right.. What to do next?
Daisy was pleased that her spell had worked. "Well, it is up to you the kind of bad weather you want to conjure. This time I won't block your spell," Daisy replied as she conjured a new cloud, "Nubecula." The Prefect was curious as to what Caolan would do but she was brave enough to let him conjure any kind of weather.

Tina smiled at the other girl, slightly surprised that she knew her name, but she assumed she must've overheard it at the feast or quidditch tryouts. She thought she remembered seeing her there. “You're welcome… Hanna, is it?” she said. Well, this would make an interesting dynamic! Tina hadn't expected to be able to find one partner, let alone two, but as far as partners went, she lucked out. At least she didn't get stuck with the lava people or the firebug!

Tina kept a close eye on Septimus's cloud. Would you look at that? Her spell worked! “Thanks!” she replied with a small smile, but before she could feel too pleased with herself, she felt a raindrop on her face, then another and another. It seemed Hanna's spell had hit her cloud while she was she was watching Septimus's!

The rain wasn't a big deal. She had a mac on and her hood up, but she figured she should at least try to block it. "Protego!” she cast, aiming her wand above her head, and the rain pattered off an invisible shield. It was lucky she cast her shield when she did! As soon as the shower from Hanna's spell tapered off, her cloud took another hit, this time from Septimus. Her shield may not have blocked the spell, but it did keep the rain from falling on her.

Tina wasn't sure whether to laugh or scoff at the ambush. Really, guys? Two against one wasn't fair… but it was all in fun, she supposed. “Good job!” she said, nodding to each of her partners in turn. Okay, nice time over. Back to the weather duel!

She refocused her attention on Hanna's cloud. Why should she and Septimus get all the fun? Tina decided to stick with snow again; rain was boring and hail was dangerous. She concentrated with all her might, once again visualizing a sprinkling of tiny, perfect snowflakes. “Tempestas Horribilis!” she said, aiming her wand with a flick of her wrist, and she watched in anticipation for the flurry she hoped would follow.

Snow.... oh. Well. Um. Ah. O...okay. Snow. Great. Brilliant. Wonderful.

Not knowing if Jackson had misheard him or had heard him fine and was deciding to be tricksy OR if he was just having a little fun with him, Abra gave a small, slightly strained smile and brACED HIMSELF for this potential snowfall he was going to receive. At least he was waterproof and his clothes were lined with warming charms, right?

Abra waited, braced, wand raised ready to shield himself from the whatever-it-was that was soon to be falling on him. Sure, he could have put up a shield charm earlier, but he sort of wanted to test his reflexes with the shield charm, give himself a challenge, you know?

And there it was! Abra raised his wand, all set to cast his spell, but the rain hit him first, and he was so relieved that it was rain and not snow, that he took even longer to eventually throw up a shield charm with, "Protego!"

Luckily, his waterproof charms had indeed held, but Abra was a little displeased to discover he'd not quite fully charmed his back, and now the back of his robes were wet and there was rainwater going down the back of his neck and making him shiver, but he grinned at Jackson all the same, grateful for not having to face the promised blizzard. "Thanks!" he all but chirped, but trying to do so quietly because he was still aware that Professor Darlington had asked them to duel with the weather and might not take kindly to doing favours for each other. "Right, got it... uhhhh... let's see."

Cancelling his shield charm, Abra pointed his wand back up at his cloud again. It still looked substantial enough to provide more weather, so he didn't bother casting Nubecula again. "Tempestas Horribilis!" He kind of wanted to do rain again, to see if he could make it a little bit more of a downpour this time, and because he felt bad conjuring up snow or ice, but as Jackson himself had suggested it, he focused his mind as hard as he could on snowy conditions not unlike what he'd seen on the Hogwarts grounds for the past six winters. From his cloud and towards Jackson and his shield charm this time came a flurry of snow, more substantial than the drizzle he'd managed earlier, falling until the cloud itself had completely disappeared.

Perfect.

Hanna watched Tina cast the successful charm on Septimus' cloud, causing it to snow. It would be good knowing this one in case there wasn't snow on Christmas, but she wouldn't tell Professor Darlington that. Not that she would try anything large scale. Just something over the window, perhaps.

She nodded to Tina, "Yep, it's Hanna. Thanks Septimus." And she watched as a few drops of rain splattered down from Tina's cloud. SHE had done that! Not that she was hoping Tina would get wet. But the solution for her, as well as her rainmac, was a shield charm. "Good thinking," she said, just as her own cloud was hit.

Without her hood on, a cold drop of sleet hit her square on the top of her head. She looked up and saw a big fat drop coming, right onto her nose. Up went her hood, with a big grin on her face, and she aimed her wand at Septimus this time.

"Tempestas Horribilis," she said. Her wand moved slightly as her wrist flicked.

Chloe smiled as the sixth year talked about the next spell and did her own cloud. It was more perfect than Chloe's was and she looked at it with admiration. Eyes growing wider as she made the cloud grow darker and then rain start to fall.

Giggles left her when the rain was hitting them and she put the hood up on her mac. She didn't mind getting wet though, honestly with quidditch at school it just happened.

"Okay, I guess it is my turn" shutting her eyes super tight she thought about what she wanted. Rain coming down, maybe she could even get a thunder clap to happen. Her thought was to have rain though, one thing at a time Chlo. Opening her eyes again she did the wand movement, "Tempestas Horribilis" The cloud grew darker but no rain had come.

Hmmmm

"Let me try again" She thougth about the rain, really thought about it and did the wand movement over again.

"Tempestas Horribilis"

This time a little sprinkle came from the clouds.

Concentration was hard sometimes, but once a person was able to focus, a lot of the time things went smoothly. And noif was time for her to make some snow fall.

"Tempestas Horribilis," she said while picturing a lot of snow falling. She beamed as a bunch started falling down over Patrick.

So much pretty snow.

Madison would have loved to play in it if they weren’t in the middle of a game. Maybe later she would be able to. ”I guess they would mostly use it to play in... or maybe to make things colder... so long as there were sufficient freezing spells with it.” Plus it was pretty. Especially now that Patrick had managed to make MORE snow fall, replacing his rain. ”Awesome!” He had really gotten the hang of things.

Madison pointed her wand over her head so that she could make another fluffy cloud. ”Nubecula!”

He knew this was supposed to be a competition or duel he wasn't sure which to call it but he was fairly certain that he was just enjoying the fact that he had gotten the hang of the spell finally. He watched as she made another cloud. Patrick raised his wand and let it rip this time "Nubecula!"

He watched as the cloud managed to get into the air. He thought about bad weather and decided on wind. He pointed his wand at the sky and prepared for a gust of wind in his mind, "Tempistas Horribilis" He waited to see if the wind would pick up and maybe make it harder for Madison to get her cloud to do anything.
