Default Transfiguration Lesson I - Always Take The Weather With You

If you care to glance out of the corridor windows on your way to the Transfiguration classroom on this mid-October morning, you’ll notice that the sky is typically dreary for this kind of year -- grey and overcast. Don’t let that get you down in the dumps though, Professor Darlington has quite the lesson planned.

Upon entering the classroom, you’ll be surprised (or not, this is Hogwarts after all) to find that you haven’t walked into a classroom at all. The classroom has been charmed into what appears to be a large, open clearing outside on the grounds. It’s still morning, but in here the sky is a clear pale blue and there isn’t a cloud in sight.

The only thing out of the ordinary you’ll see, is the portable blackboard in the middle of the clearing and this is where Professor Darlington is standing and waiting, arms crossed and expression neutral.

Well, don’t dilly daddle! Come on in and find a spot to stand.

OOC: Welcome everyone! Class has started! Come on in and let's have fun! Remember, although this is the first RPed Transfiguration class of the term, your kiddos will have had lessons with Professor Darlington already. We’ll move on in about 24 hours.

The lesson was moving on, and Madison knew that she could make more soon... Probably rain clouds given the next set of instructions. She made her way over to the clothing rack, grabbing herself a rain mac before making her way over to her spot and putting it on. That done, she raised her hand to answer the next question. ”Rain clouds can be useful for watering plants, especially during a draught. You’d just need to control HOW intense the rain is so that they don’t get overwatered and drown.” Obviously.

“I suppose that could be a handy use for a weather spell,” Joyce commented thoughtfully, “and unlike the Aguamenti Charm, it wouldn’t be necessary for you to be there to maintain it. Good answer, Miss Valentine.”

Taking a deep breath he readied himself for it, "Nubecula" he watched as a little whisp of a cloud emerged. That wasn't what he wanted to happen. Taking a deep breath he raised his wand again and pointed at the sky, visualizing the nice fluffy clouds he wanted last time. "Nubecula." This time a nice puffy cloud went into the air. He could have jumped for joy. He had to work a bit harder in Transfiguration, but he was hopping this year might be different.

Looking back around at Professor Darlington he heard her question about why use weather spells. "Would it not help in cultivation of plants and animals?" He was wrong about what they were going to transfigure so he wasn't so sure he would be right about the weather spells.

Her attention then turned to the Slytherin Captain. “Another good answer, thank you Mr. Dooley. Magic folk who farm would find spells such as this to aid in their field of work.” Get it? Field of work.

She was ready to move on, though, and as soon as the rack of macs appeared, she holstered her wand and headed off in search of a good seventh year sized coat. *She was pleased to find one in good condition that fit her well enough. Draping the coat over her arm, Chloe headed back toward the professor.

She was a little bit disappointed that the Head Girl didn’t provide any input to the discussion. Perhaps she was too busy making sure she found a rain mac that was a good fit.

Hmm...Transfiguration was an awesome subject, wasn't it?

A rain mac? Was that some sort of British word?

Never mind that. Torii headed toward the rain macs and chose a yellow one in just her size. Not that the color mattered much, because they were all yellow. Rain mac now on, Torii headed back to where she'd been before and raised her hand. "Could weather be used as a defense mechanism? I'm thinking it might be useful if you're under attack and need a diversion," she said.

“Very good, Miss Stark!” Joyce commended the Slytherin with an almost smile. There was a reason she liked that particular answer…

Although Charms had movements and she heard Transfigurations really didn't have much. Ugh... can her mind shut up so she could focus on this lesson?

Uh...oh... time to do the spell.

"Ok... relax Stella you got this." she thought to herself as she took a deep breath. **Looking at her notes she mumbled the incantation. " noo-BEC-yu-LAH!" She didn't want to do the spell until she had it right, she wanted to do this right the first time. *After mumbling it several times, she decided that she finally gotten the spell right to practice it. Pointing her wand above her head she thought of a nice fluffy cloud. "Nubecula!" she said as a wisp of smokey like cloud appeared above her head. *Ok... that was close, maybe if she tried again and focused she can do it. Pointing her wand a bit upward she said. "Nubecula!" as a fluffy cloud appeared above her head she smiled happily.

As her cloud disappeared and she heard the question she raised her hand. " What about modifying the weather professor? Surely they use it to modify weather when there's a bad storm." she said shrugging. *She didn't know, but it was a guess right and a guess wouldn't hurt right?

“Modifying the weather indeed, Miss Starson, yes. However we must remember that it’s not good to get too involved with Earth’s natural occurrences.”

At least nothing that she thought Professor Darlington would appreciate. She raised her hand, thinking of the only Christmas she had ever had where there wasn't snow. It wasn't really Christmas. "If you wanted a certain weather on a certain day. Like... if it was raining on your wedding day you could stop it. Or if... Christmas was warm you could make it snow so that it was proper Christmas." At least in the opinion based on fourteen Christmases, some of which she didn't remember.

Miss Newton had a similar answer. “While possible, it’s not advisable,” she started, tone serious. “It would take a strong spell to completely alter the weather in a manner such as that and could be noticed by muggle communities.”

Abra looked up towards the professor and then over at the rain macs. From where he was stood, he could see that there simply weren't going to be enough for all of them, so he made a slightly mad dash over to the rack to claim one for himself. He grabbed one - one that was clearly two sizes too big for him - and was about to put it on when... something stopped him. He did not want to be one of the students left without a mac, not at all - think of his hair - but that would also mean making someone else go without, in all probability a younger student, and what with him being a prefect, that was probably... not good. He was already feeling just a smidgen of guilt about it.

So, in the end, and with great reluctance, he returned the mac to the rack for someone else to take... but stood by, in case he'd calculated it wrong and there would indeed be one left for him.

Anyway, the question. Abra raised his hand and... just had a go. "If you were out on an adventure, or maybe camping, and you really needed a shower or just to cool down, you could make it rain for a while."

Next up was Prefect Botros. She hadn’t failed to noticed that he had decided to forego a rain mac. Would he regret that later? Probably. “Yes, Mr Botros.” She nodded, “that’s certainly a practical use.”

"I think a weather spell would be great if someone is out in the sun but their core body temperature can't withstand the heat. Changing the temperature or creating a cool breeze can certainly help."

Another one who had decided to go without a rain mac. Was it a Prefect thing perhaps?

“There are healing charms that would aid the cooling down of an overheating body temperature. But if you aren’t familiar with such charms, a weather charm would be a alternative. Yes, Miss Swann.”

Jackson had lost his train of thought when he saw Zoryn making a scene. *No one was surprised except the professor. Jackson was surprised that she hadn’t just taken points away right then and there, but he did have to remind himself that this was a new year. *New staff, new rules, new blah blah blah. He watched as the cloud spell appeared on the board, and he wrote them down. He imagined that people would be changing the weather on their own left and right after this… Honestly, if he wasn’t a Prefect, he would be mighty tempted to make it rain in the Great Hall or something… *Hmmmmmmm… He moved away from the nearest students and looked up to the air in front of him while going over the spell in his head. He held his wand steadily forward and tried it out.

“Nubecula.”

Well… there were definitely wisps coming from his wand, but it wasn’t enough. *Jackson cleared his throat and cast the spell again, this time with much more conviction. *

“Nubecula!”

Ta dahhhh! *A cloud quickly began forming and he watched it swirl together. *It didn’t gain too much color or anything, but it sat there. Grayish and fluffy. He was reminded strongly of a certain sad grey donkey. **

"Professor, if you cast the spell with different emotions behind it, do you think it affects the cloud type or anything?"
*Could he make a happy cloud and an angry cloud??

Rather than answer the question she had asked, Prefect Thomas seemed to be providing his own questions. No matter. Joyce was glad for the input either way. “It’s been known,” she answered, “the mood of the castor can affect the shape and colour of the cloud created. It will still be just a cloud ultimately though. Should you wish to add ‘weather’ to the cloud, additional magic is required.” Which they were soon about to find out.

"Holly, what-" The few seconds it took Cameron to process the scene in front of him, Professor Darlington had already extinguished the flames but it left him staring at his sister all the same. Wait, SHE had started the fire? What?

Completely ignoring the professor's question for now, Cam quickly headed over to Holly and touched her arm. "Are you alright? What happened?" Why had there been fire?

She glanced in the direction of Mr. Tamesis. No input from him, but she was glad to note that he was checking up on his sister and no longer playing silly games.

He thought about the question for a brief second and almost raised his hand to answer when another student spoke of exactly the reason he was thinking. He sighed inwardly, keeping his hand by his side for a brief second until he could come up with something worth saying.

“Like others have mentioned magical plants all have different ideal growing environments. Some plants that ordinarily grow in desert areas wouldn’t do well say here in Scotland because it’s too cold and wet. If you could control the weather you could grow useful plants in any location you wish.” His Da was a Herbologist and this was right up his street. He knew that it was an obvious answer that had already been mentioned but it didn’t hurt to expand on it, right? And he couldn’t think of another answer either so it would do.

“Yes, Mr Wilson, very well explained. It’s not uncommon for Herbologists to use weather spells to control and create different climates.” She nodded and then turned to another of the Ravenclaws.

SPOILER!!: tina!

If visualization and determination were key, maybe she could create a cloud in a specific shape just by visualizing it. That would be fun... she was definitely going to try that later!

Somehow Tina had a hunch that rainclouds were going to be the next topic, even before Professor Darlington's instructions to get a rain mac. She didn't think she'd need a mac - she could always just use the impervius charm on her uniform - but she walked toward the clothing rack more for the sake of following directions than anything else. Eyes scanning the rack, Tina doubted there would be enough to go around. If that turned out to be the case, she decided she would give hers to a younger student, but for now she picked up a mac she thought would more or less fit her. She thought wrong! It was too short at the arms and too wide in the middle, but it would have to do!

Tina rejoined the group, carefully considering the question.

Her first thought was herbologists cultivating plants, but that had already been said and she didn't want to repeat answers. Another idea came to her, but she thought it was too far-fetched to voice out loud. She was afraid of looking dumb, but she didn't want Professor Darlington to think she wasn't trying, especially since she'd been too flustered by all that lava nonsense to answer the last question! She tentatively raised her hand and waited to be called on. "Weather spells could be useful in quidditch, " she said. "You could conjure rain or wind for players to practice flying in adverse conditions, or say a dangerous storm started in the middle of a game, you could use a weather modification spell to stop it so the game could continue as planned." Was that a bad answer? Probably... she was going to stop talking now.

Well, that rain mac wasn’t a very good fit. Joyce’s lips twitched in amusement for the briefest of moments. “Another good use, Miss Dante, indeed.” And very original too. She didn’t follow Quidditch as much as she had done in her younger years but she knew enough on the topic. “Quidditch players are required to play matches in all sorts of different weather conditions so a spell to mimic said conditions for training purposes would be most useful.”

“Very good everyone, it seems you all get the gist. Magic folk use weather modifying spells for a number of different reasons, some more practical than others. In fact, they’re used right here in our very own greenhouses every day.” She took a pause to make sure she had the attention of everyone and that there weren’t any more incidents. Everything okay there, Miss Tamesis? Good.

“You all know how to conjure a cloud.” Granted, not all of them were particularly good at it, but it would do. “Our next task is to create ‘weather’ in our clouds. Today we will be creating ‘bad weather’ specifically. Rain… snow… hail… If you don’t have yourself a rain mac, I hope you’re able to cast a competent drying charm else you’ll be going to lunch in a soggy uniform”

With yet another flick of her wand, more words appeared on the blackboard. A new incantation.

Quote:
Incantation: Tempestas Horribilis [tem•PES•tas hor•RIB•ih•lis]

Wand Movement: Slight flick of the wrist and point at the cloud.

“Tempestas Horribilis!” She announced to the class, starting the pacing again. “All one needs to do is CLEARLY state the incantation and point at the target cloud with a slight flick. You must visualise the wet weather you are looking to create distinctly in your minds for it to be successful. Like so! Apologies, Mr. Wilson.”

He was just the first student she happened to gaze upon at that moment, so.

She cast a quick Nubecula and in one swift movement and a flick of her wrist, aimed her wand at the cloud she had conjured. “TEMPESTAS HORRIBILIS.” The snow she had visualised in her mind, instantly flurried down from the cloud and onto the Ravenclaw boy’s head and shoulders like a sprinkling of soggy dandruff.

“I want you all to pair up, or work in groups,” she continued as if nothing had happened. “Conjure yourself a new cloud and then aim your bad weather spells at your opponents clouds. Think of this as a duel, if you will. Shield charms and dismarming charms ARE allowed and encouraged to protect yourselves. At this level, your bad weather won’t last more than a few minutes so you can keep practicing in your groups until you’ve mastered it. If you’re having difficulty conjuring your cloud, please ask myself or an older student to assist you.” Had she made that clear enough? Any questions? No?

“Chop chop! Get to it, class!”

OOC: This is the main activity guys. Firstly, find a pairing or group. Next, use Nubecula to re-conjure your cloud. And then, use the new spell to cast bad weather at your opponents! Get creative, get wet and most importantly have fun with it! You've got until until Thursday 24th January, 6pm EST-ish.

Chloe HAD been distracted with her own weather related thoughts and had failed to answer the last question, at least out loud, but then she'd still been thinking about who to persecute with clouds. She smiled apologetically at the professor as she unholstered her wand. Practice, right?

"Anyone want to storm duel with me? I'm thinking rain versus snow, the epic battle. I'll take... snow." She flicked her wand, squinted her eyes, and tried the incantation. "Nebecula." Her cloud was ready for action.

There was that rain mac term again. Was it British? Or was it some common term that Torii, in all her 15 years, had somehow missed out on? Either way, she was pretty sure it just meant 'raincoat', and since she had one of those, she was good to go.

In the next second, all her attention on the raincoat was gone and now directed toward the kid getting snowed on. "Whoa," she whispered. That had been awesome! Poor Ravenclaw, but still, the spell had been awesome to watch!

...and now it was time to spring into action!

Some other Ravenclaw had already gotten good and started, and she was apparently looking for a partner, too. "I'll storm duel with you!" she said. She pointed in the air directly above her head. "Nubecula!" she exclaimed, and there her cloud was once again. "...and I'll take rain."

Caolan smiled just that tiny bit as the Professor agreed and elaborated on his answer. He was proud of his Da’s career after all and he considered it a direction that he might like to go towards in the future. It all depended on his grades and boy did it suck that he started school during his OWL year and not the year before.

He headed towards the rain macs and quickly picked up a larger one that looked like it might be able to fit. They weren’t exactly attractive things but the sixteen-year-old really didn’t fancy getting wet not could he remember the drying spell at this point of time and he wasn’t going to ask anyone else. He headed back to where he was standing and waited further instructions, listening intently to the professors explanation of the lessons proceedings. But whilst he was listening so intently to the instructions he was rather taken off guard as a flurry of snow landed on top of his head.

Huh?!

JEEZ that was cold! He frowned slightly as he tried to wipe the snow off from the top of his head. “Thanks Professor” he mumbled under his breath.

He always grumbled as they were told to join groups. It wasn’t because he didn’t like people, it was because he still didn’t know enough people to automatically assume that he could partner them. And then he’d have to ask someone and it was always pretty awkward.

Now to summon his personal cloud again. He flicked his wand above his head and spoke clearly. “Nubecula” Out from his wand came a slightly bigger, less whispy cloud that looked capable of producing weather phenomena. The cloud followed him around as he scouted out for a partner or group to join. Preferably one that would actually put the work in and not leave him to do everything like some people. He spotted the Hufflepuff prefect looking pretty partnerless and headed towards her as she spoke up asking for a group. “Hey. Mind if I join?” he asked with a smile. Manners and all.

Daisy smiled at the sound of the Ravenclaw boy (Caolan) asking if you could work with her. "I'd love to be your partner," she replied. "How about you cast your spell first? I mean, I can easily perform a Drying Charm if I do get soaked." Daisy was also ready to cast a non-verbal defence spell such a Shield Charm if the need arose.

Jackson hadn’t even heard the previous question… he had been thinking too much on his own question perhaps? He always felt bad when he wasn’t being the best example he could be, but that was exhausting and impossible to do alllllll the time. He listened to those who were answering though, playing mental Jeopardy to figure out what the question was. After those who had an answer answered, the professor seemed to be moving on in the direction his head had been. Which he could have guessed if he hadn’t been so concentrated on conjuring clouds when the rain macs had appeared. Ah yes, he understood now. Although he knew perfectly well how to cast a drying charm, he decided that as soon as they were free to begin again, he would grab a rain mac. Had to be the good role model, right? As he watched Professor Darlington use Caolan for the example, he nodded slightly. Yea, definitely grabbing one of those just in case… Once they were allowed to get started, Jackson quickly made his way to the rack, thanking the professor for them as he passed. Let’s be honest, some teachers would probably make a student sit there soaked through until they cast a drying spell, and it was NOT warm enough for that. He went back over to his spot and called out,
“Anyone want to make a group??”

Yep. Looked like Abra really was going to have to go without a rain mac, and, given that they were on offer to begin with, he really didn't think that that boded well for him and his hair. Was he going to get COLD? He had a feeling he was going to get cold.

Judging by the explanation Professor Darlington was giving, Abra hoped that he'd be able to get away with a really good Impervius Charm, and that that might keep him dry from whatever weather they were going to be conjuring up.

Just... not snow. Pleeeease not snow.

As soon as they were told to start getting on with it, Abra cast his eye around for a partner or group to join, but he was pretty dubious. Would he be able to persuade someone to steer clear of conjuring snow? He really wasn't sure.

Hearing his fellow prefect call out for someone to work with, Abra went ahead and raised a hand to get his attention. "I'll work with you," he said. He and Jackson had never really talked a great deal before, so this was perhaps a good chance to interact with him a little bit. "Uh. If that's okay, I mean."

Still in the process of trying to warm himself up after the Professor used him as an example, Caolan flicked what was hopefully the remainder of the snow from his hair and shook it down to the floor almost resembling a dog trying to dry itself off. Snow looked pretty cool and everything but he hated being out in it and he certainly didn’t appreciate being covered in it. He flicked the hood of the mac up over his head in preparation for what was to come. He might have looked ridiculous but at least he wouldn’t get any more cold or wet than he already was.

“Tempestas Horribilis” he spoke clearly flicking his wrist and pointing at the cloud above the girls head. In his mind he was visualising a light rain flurry. He didn’t want to go too extreme on the first go after all so he thought he’d let her off lightly. The cloud began to erupt with a soft rain that fell down from above the girls head.

Heh. That was pretty cool.

Well, it could do with some improvement. “Clear and concise please. Listen to how your brother says it.”

“FIVE! MINUTES!”

It was happening all right. Very much. Maxie didn't even bother trying to do the spell work because the very flammable grass was on fire.

He waved his arms and hands- he pointed too- did everyone see this? Could someone do something about it real quick before they possibly died? Was he overdoing it? No, no, Maxie did not believe so. HE'D SEEN FIRES. THEY STARTED OUT SMALL AND ENDED UP BIG. HELLO.

In the midst of his silent waving and point, Maxie made sure to send Holly a look- what kind of look, you ask? Not the nice kind.

Frozen, where she was standing - her eyes glued horrifically on the fire that wasn’t disappearing - her head snapped up to catch the eyes of their Professor and then she got scalded. Badly. And from the tone of Professor Darlington’s voice, she really wasn’t happy… but she had to know that it wasn’t her, she’d just raised the alarm!!

…….….

She blinked. And then blinked again.

What? No. It wasn’t her! She didn’t do it!

Nononono.

Shaking her head, silent as she hoped the Professor would move on to let her freak out in silence. Hands raised to cover her face, shutting out the shaking heads and glaring eyes that were trained on her.

It hadn’t been her! She detested fire… only using it in potions or other classes where she was told too.

He hadn't noticed the small fire until he heard his sister yell. Which was a noise he would have heard from ANYWHERE.

And although she was in class, and she was almost thirteen AND she was a big girl… as soon as Cameron was close enough to touch she wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him. Tightly. Hoping that it would stop the repetition on her head telling her that /she had started that fire.

She couldn’t have! She didn’t want to hurt anyone.

Shaking her head, Holly sniffed. “I don’t know… One minute everything was fine… then there was fire. Lots of fire. Spreading and heating up and it was there. I don’t know how!” She tightened her grip around him, burying her face in his chest. She wasn’t scared of many things - but fire was still something she didn’t like to be around too often.

“But… the Professor is lying. Right?” She looked up at her big brother, eyes full of worry - worry and hope. Hope that Cam was going to tell her that there was no way she could have started that fire (even if it hadn’t spread very far). “I didn’t raise my wand or think about fire, or make my intentions known or any of the things that we are always taught has to happen for magic to work.”

Heaving in a breath, in an awful attempt to calm down her pounding heart she shook her head yet again, telling her brother a secret in a near-whisper as the class moved around them to get their… coats. “I was just mad at the Professor for giving you into trouble.” With her arms still wrapped around Cameron, she ignored the question Professor Darlington had asked. She was too shaky right now… How was she meant to concentrate properly?

Moving slightly, so that she could look around Cam and maybe hear what Professor Darlington was telling the class - Holly kept hugging her brother. And likely would until someone made her move. There was just no way she could even feel bad about it. Right now her nerves were thin and she felt like a thousand ghosts had walked over her grave after it had been set alight in a fiery blaze.

It was horrible.

Tempestas Horribilis.

At least it was a horrible weather charm to go with her rubbish attitude. She just wanted to curl up in bed with a teddy… or go home to Mum and Dad, though she doubted that would be allowed right now.

Jackson laughed a bit. As if he'd say no after calling out like that! Silly Prefect. Looking at him, Jackson noticed the lack of rain mac on his partner. "D'you want it?" he asked him, offering the one he had grabbed a minute ago. Jackson really didn't mind either way.

She had been listening to everything her peers were saying and what the professor explained. Chloe was already enjoying this lesson and making clouds sounded so much fun. She didn't do it right away though, she watched others. She wanted to make sure she knew exactly how to do it and being a visual learner, Chloe knew she needed to watch first.

So staying still and watching older students she mouthed the word a bit first, Nubecula, Nubecula, Nubecula! This didn't seem like a hard word and the wand movements didn't seem so hard, so placing her wand in position and moving it just above her head she said confidently, "Nubecula" A little cloud came out of her wand and Chloe couldn't help but beam at herself. Things were finally connecting.

Hearing the professor she stopped making her clouds and looked up. Listening to what she had to say Chloe was excited to get to the next part. Assuming they would be working with rain since they needed jackets and well the question was about rain she moved to get one as she raised her hand.

"I think they would need it for crops if we would have a really hot summer and no rain was happening."

Noticing others were pairing up she looked around to see if anyone wanted to pair up with her.

Meep. Valencia blushed when the professor said she needed to do better. The Ravenclaw wasn't a huge fan of not being able to do things. SO TRY HARDER SHE WOULD!

She took a deep breath before trying once again. "Nubecula!" she exclaiming pointing above her. Much to her pleasure, a cloud formed above her head.

She then looked around for a partner, practicing the wand movement as her eyes scanned around her. Her eyes fell on the Ravenclaw captain and she oh-so-casually made her way over. Hai there.

"Want to work together?"

Oh, good! The little blond with the familiar features wanted to play with her. Chloe grinned at the girl and gave her a high!wand. Welp, probably only half a high!wand because she didn't want to lose control of her newly grown cloud. She stepped closer to the younger girl, dragging her cloud with her.

"Rain rain, go away." Chloe pointed her wand. "TEMPESTAS HORRIBILIS." She thought about glorious fat fluffy snowflakes, falling from the cloud in soft spirals. Not a storm, just a beautiful flurry from a winter cloud. She found that she'd closed her eyes, and when she opened them, there were those big snowflakes dotting her eyelashes and the sleeves of her raincoat.

She ought to put up a shield... only... she wanted to keep catching snowflakes.

It only took Torii a few seconds to remember that her opponent was a prefect. It gave the Slytherin a slight split-second sense of nervousness about the duel, but then she pushed it to the side the moment Chloe so readily agreed. Prefect or not, this duel was about to get started, and Torii had other things to think about besides badges.

Torii watched the pretty, white snow, an action that would have likely costed her the duel had this been real. She had to get with it! Come on, Torii! You can do better than this! She pushed the thoughts of snow to the back of her mind and replaced them with pelting rain. "Tempestas Horribilis!" she called out, flicking her wrist and pointing her wand at her opponent's cloud.

Being from California, Torii didn't do snow too well. Rain either, for that matter.

In her intention of claiming a rain mac, although all things said Stasya wasn’t too worried about her ability to cast the appropriate charms had it been necessary, she had been silent during the most recent question asked of them. Honestly, she would have probably said something along the lines of Stella and Hanna. Either that or weather as a form of concealment, but she’d found that the lesson had continued before she could suggest that. Plus, she was secretly glad that Chloe had gotten the answer to her earlier question too.

They could conjure a raincloud. Sort of. It was more like influencing a cloud to develop rain, or snow apparently. Either way, she applied herself to adding the new spell underneath the cloud conjuring spell in her notes, trying to stay away from the others who had already begun practicing. Time to see what she could do, although she kept herself from conjuring her cloud as she noticed younger Chloe looking around quietly.

Instead, she repeated the new incantation under her breath as she walked over to the younger Claw and gave her a smile. “Did you need a partner?

No big deal as plenty of his classmates had worked it out well enough without his two cents and now they were moving on.

Tempestas Horribilis

The spell work seemed east enough, the working in groups against each other made it complicated. The fourth year was debating his options as people started pairing off and into groups. “Anyone need a partner…or a third?” he asked finally, figuring a welcoming partner was safer than nearly forcing himself on people. They did tend to feel obligated to say yes when you asked.

She then aimed her wand at her partner's cloud and thought about a small hailstorm. “Tempestas Horribilis” Daisy said with a flick of her wrist. Soon tiny marble-sized hailstones began to form above Caolan's head.

The fourth year was debating his options as people started pairing off and into groups. “Anyone need a partner…or a third?” he asked finally, figuring a welcoming partner was safer than nearly forcing himself on people. They did tend to feel obligated to say yes when you asked.
Tina smiled to herself, pleased that her answer had been accepted. Ooh, so they could use the same spell to create rain, snow, or hail instead of needing a different spell for each type of weather? Cool! She couldn't wait to try it... maybe she'd have time to do all three types! She took a quick moment to jot down the spell information before watching Professor Darlington's demonstration with rapt attention. For one wild moment, she worried she was going to be the unlucky subject, and she took an automatic step back to stay out of the cloud's path. Even with a rain mac. she didn't fancy the idea of getting rained or snowed or hailed on in front of the whole class!

Tina blinked, frowning slightly at the directions. Well,
this class took an unexpected turn for the worse! Group work and (sort of) duelling... two of her least favorite things rolled into one activity. Just perfect. She looked around the area as her classmates began pairing off. Nope, she wasn't going to approach some random person or shout across the room asking if anyone needed a partner... way too much potential for uncertainty! She was going to wait for someone to come to her instead.

While she waited, she was going to do as much of this activity as she could by herself. "Tem-PES-tas hor-RIB-ih-lis, Tempestas Horribilis," Tina repeated the incantation.
That spell was a little harder to pronounce than the first one, but nothing she couldn't handle with a little practice.
She practiced the wand movement a couple of times too, and she was about to conjure a new cloud when she overheard somebody ask if anyone needed a partner. Her dark head whipped around in the direction of the sound, and she saw one of her housemates. He seemed like a nice, safe partner choice!

Tina nodded, smiling slightly as she approached him. "Sure," she said. "I'll work with you... if you want." Which she hoped he did, since he'd asked if anyone needed a partner. Otherwise, this was going to be embarrassing!

All things considered, it wasn’t a total disaster and Joyce moved among the students with her own invisible shield charm in place so that she didn’t get a drenching. She wouldn’t put it past certain members of the class to think it a humorous prank. They seemed quite common amongst these students.

Some of them were getting stuck in, some of them were still on the hunt for a partner. “If you can’t find someone to work with, just join in with anyone. I’m glad to see that the majority of you have good manners but if this were a real dueling scenario many of you would be a lost cause.” Just being honest.

Especially that one over there. The little fire starter.

“Miss Tamesis, please release your brother immediately and get to work or else you can be partnered with me.” And that wouldn’t end well for the second year at all.

“Everyone else, keep at it! I expect you all to have mastered this spell by the end of the lesson.”
It wasn’t too much to ask. “If you haven’t, you can expect extra homework on the importance of concentration while conjuring.”

OOC: Thanks for playing along everyone. Just a reminder that you’ve got until Thursday 24th January, 6pm EST-ish to keep at it. Like Joyce said, if you can’t find a partner, don’t worry, just join in with anyone.

"D'you want it?" he asked him, offering the one he had grabbed a minute ago. Jackson really didn't mind either way.
"Brilliant, thanks," Abra replied with a grin, closing the distance between himself and his Transfiguration partner. What? Huh? Oh. "No, no, it's okay! I'm just going to..." he pointed his wand at himself and cast, "Impervius." Then he cast the same spell all over his body, section by section, trying (and very likely failing) to cover himself entirely with the spell. "There. I should be waterproof now."

At the very least, his hair was protected, and that was what mattered.

"I'd just like to try and avoid snow," Abra added, hinting heavily to Jackson and hoping he'd get what he was saying. Not that he'd be mad or even upset if there was snow, just very... very cold. "But I guess we should get started, right?" He waited for a few moments for Jackson to indeed get ready, before pointing his own wand up at the sky again. "Nubecula!"

As before, a cloud appeared up in the air. Perhaps not as good as the cloud he had conjured before, but that had been the combined effort of multiple spells, after all. Next time, he'd make it better.

Now, concentrating hard on the mental image of rain pelting down at Jackson, Abra - still with his wand pointed at the cloud - flicked his wrist and cast, "Tempestas Horribilis!" And down came......!

... A light drizzle. Hm. Okay. Well.

Baby steps.

Well, this was slowly turning into a disastrous lesson.

Hugging his sister back, Cameron listened to her rambling on about the fire and whether or not SHE had actually been the one to cause it. "I don't know, Holly." He said truthfully, deep down hoping that what his sister was saying was true and that Professor Darlington WAS actually wrong about who had started the fire. Maybe someone else had lost their temper or it was a prank or something. Could be, yeah?

Primarily focused on Holly still, Cameron used his wand to Accio them both a rain mac. He had not intentions of getting caught off-guard by some bad weather someone else had cast. They were in Scotland after all, they had enough rain as it is. About to pull back and suggest they team up, Cameron heard the professor's words, telling Holly to release him. What?! "She's upset." He said, narrowing his eyes at Professor Darlington. Did she not have any sense of compassion?!

Nonetheless, he did as he was told and let go of Holly, holding out the rain mac to her before putting one on himself. Right. Now, the clouds. "Nubecula!" He cast at the sky before looking to his sister again. "Do you think you can do this with me?" Cam asked softly, CLEARLY worried about her current state of mind.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Nettie wasn't sure what kind of vibe she got from this professor. She was still trying to figure it out. After last term, anyone who was even the slightest bit strict with them made her feel...icky. She had to re-train herself to remember that sometimes professors were just like that. It didn't mean they were tyrannical agents of the Ministry.

Lost in thought, she had slacked just a bit on finding a partner. Ooops. "Anyone need an extra in their group?" she asked the general area. Please someone pick her so she didn't have to be partnered with the professor...

“Tempestas Horribilis… Tem-PES-tas hor-RIB-ih-lis, Tempestas Horribilis”

Septimus ran the incantation over and over, first in his head and then aloud to practice for casting while he waited for a response. Thankfully it wasn’t long before a housemate was coming towards him, answering his question. “Great!” the fourth year remarked with a polite smile. “I’m Septimus,” he added since it wasn’t like every Ravenclaw knew everyone else, even though she looked to be around the same age or just a year apart.

Perfecting by end of class…no pressure.

The best be getting to it then. “So we’re trying to control each other’s clouds to get the other wet…right,” he mused, checking he got the concept as he took out his wand. “Nubecula!” he cast, pointing up at the ceiling sky to create his own cloud again. Now to be at the ready for the results of this weather duel.

If Cameron didn’t know and Professor Darlington said she had started the fire and she was sure she hadn’t… Who was right?

Sniffing a little as she tried not to get upset and cry, Holly focused on Cameron instead. That was safer. Much safer.

Oh. Right. They’d need one of those jacket things. … What were they even supposed to be doing? She hadn’t been listening…. Annnnd she was also pretty sure she was going to end up in detention or loosing points by the end of this lesson.

Blinking up at her brother, from where she was still hugging him, she took a step backwards. She was now sure that Professor Darlington really didn’t like her. Looking at her feet instead of around the class, she rolled her wand between her fingers before she took the jacket Cameron was giving her. Thumbing the material she contemplated walking out, after all she had only mucked everything up so far… but that wouldn’t get her anywhere and Cameron would help her.

At least Professor Darlington had gotten that part right, Cam would always help her.

Taking a deep breath, she nodded and raised her wand. Okay, focus on wispy clouds. Focus. Focus on how Cameron is saying it, and copy him. “Nubecula...” Soft, floaty wisps left her wand, though they were nothing like she needed - they were also better than anything she had managed so far. Trying again and again and again - she got her cloud to form on the fifth time with encouragement from her brother.

Wasn’t he the best person ever?
