| | |  History of Magic - lesson 2
It was a pleasant (though muddy outside) Monday morning. The sun was out and a pleasant warmth hung over the castle grounds.
That warmth may not have been inwardly felt by your history of magic professor, though. Alice's demeanor had become more irritable ever since Dolly was eaten by mutants. No longer would you find her meditating at the start of every class. Closing her eyes when she didn't have to made her nervous, even though the meditating would have helped.
Your chairs and desks are arranged in their usual places. There is nothing to indicate what today's lesson will be about. Alice greets you as you come in.

Skyler frowned. She was not sure what she had learned. Her fellow peers had different opinions about gobblins and magic. As for the last question, she had an answer for. She raised her hand.
"Mum took my brother and I to the Leaky Cauldron once, and I saw a goblin there working on cleaning the tables," she said. "He didn't look like he enjoyed his job very much."

Had she learned anything interesting? Not really, no. And honestly, it wasn't really a debate, not the strictest definition of the word. Guess she just didn't really find goblins and goblin relations all that interesting. Oops?
She hadn't really had any interactions with goblins outside of Gringotts, and that had been relatively recent, since they had kept their money in a muggle bank back in America. So yeah, no real interaction and she'd like to keep it that way, thanks.

Tina was still poring over the essay she'd written when she saw Professor O'Hara approaching out of the corner of her eye. For a moment, she half-expected a reprimand for writing an argument instead of speaking it, but that didn't happen, thank goodness! Tina's cheeks went slightly pink when the professor said her argument looked well thought-out. “Thank you, Professor,” she whispered, though she shook her head when asked if she wanted to read it out loud. It wasn't so much that she didn't want to participate… more than she didn't want to face any negative reactions from her argument! “Would you take it and grade it later, please?” As she handed the parchment to Professor O'Hara, she thought of something. “Just so you know, I don't actually believe what I wrote,” she added quietly. “I argued that side because it was easier for me to think of facts to back it.”
Tina refocused her attention as the debate ended (Thank Merlin!) and Professor O'Hara asked another question. She thought for a minute. There hadn't been any points brought up in the debate that she hadn't thought of - which was why she chose to come up with her own argument, rather than repeat others. Really all she'd learned from the debate itself was that she let fear get the better of her too easily, but she'd learned a couple of interesting things earlier in the lesson. That counted, right?
Tina raised her hand and after being called on, she said, “I learned some details about the wand ban that I didn't know, specifically the year it was established and which clause contains the ban… that was pretty interesting.” She had to think a minute before answering the other question… it wasn't often that she crossed paths with goblins. “Back home, I once saw a goblin stocking shelves in a shop. He wasn't very talkative, but he did tell me where to find what I was looking for when I asked.” And she could understand not wanting to talk much - she wasn't particularly chatty herself!

It was nice hearing either what the students had learned or about goblins they had met in the past. "Thank you everyone for your answers. I feel this debate went smoothly, wouldn't you agree? It may also interest you to know that all of you have had experiences with at least one part-goblin. I come from a mixed wizarding and goblin family." Thin smile. "I do feel that I have learned a lot from all of you and from my other students and colleagues, both here at Hogwarts and also at Romania. Well, that will be all. Class dismissed!"
Alice gave a reassuring glance to Fantina when she whispered that the argument was not her own personal opinion. "That's okay. I'm only grading debate performance, so no worries." Being part-goblin did not mean she had to be offended at students arguing against repealing the wand ban, especially when she had ordered the students to debate the issue and had said it was okay if they argued a stance they did not believe. The history of magic professor felt a good deal more affectionate towards all her students than she did last year - and this activity had only made her MORE proud of them.
The mutants weren't even on her mind anymore as she collected her papers and bid the students farewell. ooc: Thank you so much for coming, everyone!  | |
