Default Flying Lesson One {Evolution of Broomsticks}

Amelia was out much earlier than the 10am start time as she had made it a point to test drive all the brooms present today and scattered around. There were several editions of the Oakshaft, Cleansweep, Blasting Star, Shooting Star and Jollyrocket some dating back a hundred years but with maintenance, looked almost as good as the Jollyrocket 1100 she was side-seated upon, legs crossed at the ankles, hovering in a position where she could monitor students as they approached the pitch area.

She's reading the latest copy of Quidditch International recognizing a few of her peers having their children's names be printed, but rest-assured, she is definitely attuned to your arrival and no funny business should be made with any of the brooms present.

After turning in your assignments, please find a spot in the arranged semi-circle of towels to gather around and wait to begin. You may sit on one of the towels but don't get too comfortable as this flying class, after all...

ooc: meant to open the thread last night, but anyway we will officially begin in about 12 hours to give ya a chance to arrive and present your mini assignment you were given... which is to turn a parchment stating your favorite broom and why. There's a box on the ground below with a small slit where you can place your parchments. This might be the first RPed Flying class but rest-assured, this is not the first IC flying class and even first years will have had their introductory class about flying any questions consult my rules/expectations thread or PM/VM/skype/twitter at me ... Lesson has started! Catchup posts allowed but please post accordingly unless you wish for proper IC punishment for tardiness

Lesson Progression
* Question One: Name a Broomstick Model OR a spec about a broom
* Mini / Main Activity: Comparing/contrasting the broom and going for a test drive!!!

As much as Abra loved flying, he was still less than thrilled about the fact that this was to happen outside. This was nothing new, of course; he had been whining and moaning about the cold Scotland air since his very first year, though since then had become a lot better at things like warming and insulation charms on his clothes. So, you know, today was not as bad as it could have been.

It wasn't as good as it could have been either, but it was only going to get colder, so Abra knew he just had to deal with it.

He had been a little nervous about the fact that they didn't need their broomsticks for today, so Abra was relieved when he arrived at the pitch and saw broomsticks already there and scattered around. It gave him a little more confidence that they might, in fact, still be flying.

"Good morning, Professor Adara," Abra greeted, as he turned in his assignment (which he had written with a Spell Check Quill, as was the case with all of his assignments) and stood by waiting for class to start. He thought about adding 'Happy Halloween' too, but what with the professor reading her whatever-she-was-reading, Abra felt that maybe he was only going to end up distracting her from that, and so remained silent.

SPOILER!!: assignment
My favourite broomstick is my broomstick. It's a special custom build by a broommaker in Egypt and it's my favourite because it was specially built to fit me and my flying habits, like how hard I turn or brake, so I'm less likely to under- or overdo it. It feels like an extension of me rather than a piece of flying equipment and I love that.

Jackson had been working very hard on his balance in the past couple of months, and he was honestly very proud of himself. He approached the box to turn in his assignment, smiling at the woman on a broom. "Good morning, Professor," he greeted, tucking his paper neatly in the box and beginning some arm stretches for good measure. "Hey," he greeted Abra, standing near-ish.

SPOILER!!: Paper

My favorite broomstick would have to be the Moonbrusher I use. It's a hand-me-down, but it's only a few years old and in really good condition. It's much smoother and quicker than the standard training brooms. It's not bad to look at either! Otherwise, it has to be my favorite, because those are the only kinds of brooms I have used before.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy made her way to the lesson, happy in the fact that whilst she hadn't felt game enough to try out for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team, she was able to regain her flying capability prior to the injuries sustained two terms ago. This gave her confidence boost as she attended more Flying Lessons. She had her assignment clasped firmly in her hand as walked closer to where the class was. "Good morning, Professor Adara!" Daisy greeted as she placed the piece of parchment into the box.

SPOILER!!: Assignment

My favourite broomstick is my Firebolt X-Treme. I have had it for approximately three years and it is a reliable piece of equipment. I love the confidence and assurance it gives me whenever I'm flying on it. It has the right amount of speed without making me feel like I'm going to injure myself. Also, it does look rather fancy.

She then stood next to Jackson and gave him and Abra and a quick smile and a wave.

Unlike the vast majority of Hogwarts students, Vita didn't love to fly. She didn't love heights. She didn't fancy falling. Quidditch was not her favorite thing to play or to watch. It always made her feel like a bit of an outsider, particularly in these types of settings, but she did want to be good at flying, just to prove to herself that she could do it, even if being up on a broom made her a bit uncomfortable. A skill was a skill and she was always looking to learn more of those.

"Hello Professor," The sixteen year old greeted politely, showing her assignment before dropping it into the box. She'd been honest when writing it, even though she knew she could've just made something up. That really wasn't her style.

SPOILER!!: Assignment
I've never been interested in brooms, so aside from what I've heard classmates say, I don't have much first hand knowledge to judge them on. I've never even owned my own, so for this reason, I don't have a favorite type. I will say that I imagine a custom broom would be the best, since you can work with the broom creator to get the exact features you want. That's just an assumption, though.

On occasion, change was incredibly difficult for Derf. One of those difficulties was letting go and adjusting to changes in Hogwarts staff...especially when it was one of those that he trusted and felt like he could be himself around. Seeing the Herbology professor taking on the role of groundskeeper had come as a shock his first night, so he had known a new flying instructor was on the horizon as well. And he would be lying if his little quidditch loving soul hadn't galloped a few extra beats seeing Amelia Adara sitting at the staff table.

He had a few vintage posters of her in his collection back home, you know?

It had been easy to give her the benefit of the doubt and, well, so far Derf hadn't been disappointed. So, keen as ever, the Hufflepuff hurried down to the pitch for class and promptly turned in his assignment with a grin and naturally took note of what she was reading. "Anything about the World Cup teams in there?" he asked eagerly. He hadn't seen anything about the final 16 yet from the things he had read and he was super curious to know if Australia and Wales had made the cut.

My favorite broomstick is really any broomstick that I can ride. I am not so much into brands and makers as much as I am in the ability to be able to fly. Any broom can grant me that privilege. Any broom can make me feel free. My first broom ever was one of those kiddy brooms. Mum got it for me for my 3rd birthday and in a way it is my favorite broom because it was my first and it was the one that showed me the wonder that is is to fly. The broom I have now has been mine since I was 12. It may be an older model Moonbrusher, but much like my wand it is an extension of myself and I wouldn't trade it in for a new model for anything 'cause the best way to fly free is to be entirely comfortable with yourself.

So far Igor was not so impressed with any of the brooms in the school. Its not like he loved flying or anything it was just much more dull and boring on old slow brooms. He was totally meh to flying in general.

"Hello, Professor"

......um yeah about that assignment...he had meant to finish it last night but well he got distracted by something else and completely forgot about it. Well not necessarily forgot but well just didn't do it at all. So he was just going to find a spot now.

Nothing to see here.

Fortunately, Faith Chosen was a much better rule-follower and ensured that Zoryn actually did her homework... 45% of the time. And Fortunately for their flying instructor, today was one in 45%. Don't get too comfortable though, she probably wouldn't turn homework in for the next three months. Just to make it even, y'know? Couldn't change things up entirely. It was her last year anyway. Everyone ought to be used to the routine by now. Even the new Profs.

Slipping her assignment into the box, Zoryn went and stood near Abra.

My favorite broomstick is my own. No offense, but the school brooms stink hippogriff dung, I would know, I had to use one of them for tryouts in fifth year. It was the worst thing that has ever happened to me in my entire life. I'm not even being dramatic, it was terrible. The school should really invest some money in better broomsticks instead of giving it all for Professor Wayland's salary. He keeps spending his money on mid-life crisis buys anyways, so I'm sure he wouldn't mind. Money to new brooms would do us wonders as a school. The whole wizarding world thinks we're one big joke. Again, I'd know because I spread the rumors.

The end.

My favorite broom is the Nimbus Line. I think that it is a broom that has stood the test of time and overall is a personal favorite of mine. However, I think depending on what you want to do will depend on which type of broom you will need. If you're not playing a sport a stable broom would be a better option.

He moved around to where the other students were waiting for the lesson to begin. He always was interested in what they would be doing since it was always interesting. Rubbing his hand over his shoulder he tried to lessen the itch there.

Lucas didn't want to come. At all. He wasn't that good at a lot of classes - he was really trying! - but this was one class he KNEW he wasn't going to do well in. He wasn't the one who was interesting in flying! Wrong Dakest child.

The twelve year old dragged his feet all the way down to the pitch, trying not to think about all the things he'd rather be doing instead. Like making banners for Emma for Quidditch. Or some for Jó too! Or getting some hot chocolate and sitting in the common room and enjoying the view. He'd rather be doing HOMEWORK.

Sigh.

Reaching the pitch, he gave the Professor a small, maybe forced, smile and said, "Hello Professor." He took out a small piece of parchment that had his assignment on it and gave it a look over. It.... didn't have a lot and, really, Lucas had written it when he was feeling grumpy about this lesson and the assignment but looking at it now, it felt...... wrong? Or that he was going to get into trouble. But it was the truth!

......

He bit down on his lip and glanced down at the piece of parchment in his hands before dropping it into the box. There. Gone.

Flying! FLYING!

The best class in the history of all classes, if you asked Chloe of course. She couldn't wait to get to the pitch and she hurried as quickly as she could. Smiling so wide as she got there. "HEY EVERYONE!"

With her broom under her arm, she set it on the ground and opened her bag to get her assignment out. It was right there in her bag last night, but now, it wasn't there. Where did it go? She remembered she had placed it in there right after finishing it.

Turning over her bag and letting everything fall out onto the ground, her parchments scattered, her books flopped to the grass, and her quills scattered. She knelt on the ground and started opening folders, books, shuffling her parchment.

WHERE WAS THAT ASSIGNMENT!

My favorite broom is probably a Nimbus for no other reason besides it is the one I'm familiar with. There are nicer ones in my house, but I've only ever been on a handful of brooms. I've used by dad's old Nimbus and then the school brooms. It would make sense if that changes as I try more brooms.

She then moved to an open spot to await the start of the lesson.

Assignment in hand, Torii made her way to the Quidditch Pitch. She hadn't tried out for the Quidditch team. She enjoyed the game, but not on an organized team. For her, flying was just something she did as a witch to get herself from place to place. Nevertheless, she had researched brooms and had her assignment ready to go.

"Good morning, Professor!" she said. Torii slipped her assignment into the wooden box then chose a random towel to sit on as she waited for the lesson to begin.

My favorite type of broom is the Bluebottle. The reason I like it best is because it's designed for family use. This would best relate to how I see myself mainly needing a broom, which would be as a means of traveling from one place to another. I also like the way it has a built in Anti-Burglar Buzzer to help prevent the broom from being stolen.

Flying! Cordelia loved this class, despite all the challenges it presented to her. One could argue, perhaps, that it was the challenges she needed to overcome that made it even more appealing to her. Whoever told her she would never be able to do this was wrong. All the things she did in this class would prove that she could do anything.

Cordelia dropped her homework in the box as she arrived at class and found a towel to sit on, front and center where everyone could see her and where she would be right in the middle of the action. Hopefully there wouldn’t be too much sitting around though.

My favorite broom is probably the Nimbus 3100 because they go fast, but I’ve never had the opportunity to actually ride one. I don’t own my own broomstick so I haven’t been able to ride many different kinds of brooms other than training brooms and what the school lets me borrow, but I like brooms that I can go fast on.

Usually Tina hated classes with a high potential for an uncertain outcome, but flying was the exception to that rule! Flying had a calming effect on her... the smell of fresh air, the feel of wind ruffling her hair,
the view of the world from the sky. As such, she was a little disappointed when she learned it wasn't necessary to being her broom. Did that mean they weren't doing any actual flying today?

Tina made her way to the quidditch pitch, and her mood brightened when she saw all the brooms... some of which looked very old. older than her own broom even! Her curiosity was piqued. Were they going to take turns testing those brooms to compare different broom brands? That would be fun! "Hello, Professor Adara," she greeted with a polite smile as her eyes fell to the magazine the woman was reading. She hadn't had a chance to read the latest Quidditch International yet; she wondered if it said anything about the French League.

Tina rummaged through her bag for her assignment.
She'd been torn between writing about the broom she wanted to buy or the one she already had. Ultimately, she'd
gone with the broom she wanted because she had no idea if they were going to have to read these out loud, and there were too many sentimental memories attached to her broom that she didn't feel like sharing. She dropped her parchment into the box and found a towel to sit on.

My favorite broom is the Nimbus 3100 because its speed makes it the ideal broom for playing quidditch. It has a nice design, and the Nimbus broom company has a long history of providing safe and reliable equipment. This is not the broom I currently own, but rather one I'd like to have. I hope to get a summer job so that I can save up the money to buy this broom someday.

If there was one lesson at school that Caolan really wanted to get better at it was flying. After spending an hour watching the tryouts at the beginning of the school year and having been given a few lessons prior to attending, he had developed a new found interest in both learning to fly and Quidditch as a game. He had discovered in the first few lessons here that actually he was pretty good at it and considering he was a really sporty guy anyway it just seemed natural that he would want to pursue this as a path.

Caolan thought he would prefer to keep his feet on the ground but alas that was not the case anymore.

He turned up at the lesson that morning perfectly on time. It was a little chilly but for some reason it didn’t bother him as much as it usually did. Perhaps it was because he was pretty excited for the lesson, perhaps it was because he had got a decent nights sleep and was feeling pretty awake. Either way he was here with a smile on his face and a greeting for the Professor. “Morning Professor!” he said as he joined the small group.

He had that weeks assignment on a piece of paper in his hand which he handed in as he walked past.

SPOILER!!: Homework
My favourite broom has to be the Nimbus that was passed down to me by my Da. It isn’t because it’s the best broom on the market or because it’s fast and agile but because it has a special meaning to me and I feel a connection with it that I think is especially important with flying.

Flying class was usually a pretty good time, at least it was if they got to be active. Bel was never a fan of those sit-around lessons and flying was rarely that. She was pretty perky as she reached the gathering, but she didn't sit down. She looked around at the different brooms with interest though. Oh yep. Some of those were.... pretty rubbish looking tbh.

"Hello professor!" Bel handed over her assignment and then took a spot near a group of her friends.

I don't have a favourite broom. I get what it is to have a favourite something, since I DO have a favourite motorcycle and a favourite surfboard, but when it comes to brooms I'm pretty happy to just be in the air and flying.

Harri always looked forward to Quidditch because it usually meant they were doing active things. She preferred that to the boring confines of sitting in a desk and listening to some Professors (no offense) drone on about this and that. She was also not bad at Quidditch, nor was she particularly good (her cousin, Declan, she thought he was good enough), she was average at it and she was fine with that. What matters was that she could hold and ride her own broom.

So a beam was sent over to the Professor as the first year Gryffindor bounded over. "Morning, Professor!" Then she went to sit on one of the towels, absently scratching at the side of her neck.

And, the assignment? What assignment?

Malachi walks into class and smiles at the professor before greeting them in a small voice. "Good morning."

For the assignment malachi didn’t really know what to do, he’s never really been on a broom and honestly right now he couldn’t tell which was which, that is what he put on his paper.

Rylee was all about Flying lessons. Not that she needed them but because it was a break from sitting during the average lessons. Getting to be up on her broom and fly free, the wind whipping through her hair and stinging her cheeks. Not many feelings were better than that.

With a warm smile on her face she made her way onto the pitch. "Good morning, Professor Adara," she greeted happily making her way closer. Blue-gray eyes first noticed the older brooms that were scattered about before spotting the box that were for their homework assignments. Pulling the parchment from her bag she dropped it into the slot in the top of the box and went to find a spot to stand and wait for the lesson to begin.

SPOILER!!: Assignment

I would have to say that my favorite broom is my most newest one that I got just before term began. It's called 'Hale Storm X' and was custom tailored to fit me. Not only does it fit my riding style but it always fit me size wise being as I'm a little shorter than some people. It also fits my taste in personal style with it's color and look.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

Nettie loved flying. She got to practice her flying skills while earning points! It was the perfect set up, really. She headed down to the pitch, her assignment in hand as she gathered with the rest of the students.

"Hello Professor Adara!" she piped up as she joined the group.

My favorite broom has to be the Nimbus 3100. Not only is this my own personal broom, but I love the precision it has with the steering. With my small size, it works perfectly when I need to make sharp turns or sudden dips. It's flawless, and adapts to the change in direction seamlessly. It is well made as well - I've had it over a year and only had to trim the ends once, and there is not a knick or scratch on it!

She should go in to broom sales, honestly. That was an EXCELLENT pitch.

Amelia was most definitely paying attention, even while her eyes read over the magazine, casually turning a page as the first student arrived. Ah, good example too of a prefect to turn in the assignment. "Morning, Prefect Botros," she greeted of the seventh year. She would wait until after the assignments were all turned in before reading them aloud, but she acknowledged it.

And good, the Ravenclaw Prefect too turned his assignment in. She nodded at him, "Good morning," and figured in a few more arrivals she would need to get off her high horse broom.

Daisy greeted as she placed the piece of parchment into the box.

Daisy. Yes she was familiar with the Hufflepuff Prefect, given her appearance in her office at the start of term (and of course earlier classes and the fact that Amelia may have purposefully sought out those who held her badge just for the sake of it). "Morning, Prefect Swann," she said to the girl. Didn't escape her notice that the girl turned in her assignment.

A skill was a skill and she was always looking to learn more of those.

"Hello Professor," The sixteen year old greeted politely, showing her assignment before dropping it into the box. She'd been honest when writing it, even though she knew she could've just made something up. That really wasn't her style.

"Vita, hello," she greeted of the Slytherin, whom yes Amelia was aware that she was not flying-obsessed, but Amelia appreciated that she at least was putting in the effort to be present. Unlike that Carden Prefect of whom Amelia HOPED he would have been more like his father instead of just the common denominator of a shared badged So yes, appreciated that Vita showed up AND completed the assignment.

"It's mostly just about the up and coming athletes," Amelia said casually at the other Hufflepuff Prefect's question.

Nothing to see here.
So Amelia wasn't the least surprised that the first year snake didn't turn in an assignment. Nothing to do with him being a Slytherin, but well first years weren't necessarily as .... responsible. They hadn't gotten into the swing of things, but he was present and Amelia was grateful for that, casually noting to give him a gentle reminder about assignments and that they are not optional. "Welcome Igor."

Zoryn Spinnet
7th Year

The end.
Zoryn Spinnet turned in an assignment. Yes she was aware of the Gryffindor's reputation. Reminded her a bit of Alexis Chosen. She nodded approvingly at the seventh year, greeting her before sliding off her broom to stand next to the box. Figured it was probably time.

"Morning Patrick," Amelia greeted of the Slytherin Captain, as he too was setting a good example of a student leader.

He bit down on his lip and glanced down at the piece of parchment in his hands before dropping it into the box. There. Gone.

Amelia agreed about this being an amazing class, for the record. She did note Chloe bringing her own broom, frowning a moment, but her enthusiasm was hard to disapprove of. And no assignment??

Well, that was surprising.

Ah well good not all the first years were irresponsible. She nodded at Valencia, dropping her parchment into the box.

Amelia had to admit she was coloured impressed by this one response. "Yes, very convenient and definitely a good transportation method for multiple users." Much different from portkey or apparition travel with others, something she had done both of in near five decades of life.

Not much sitting around because yes this was indeed a flying class, but this would hopefully be a nice experimental class. Also, Cordelia had a WONDERFUL sense of enthusiasm which is something Amelia definitely appreciated of the young first year. She nodded appreciatively at the gryffindor, reading her assignment and taking note of that.

"Hello Tina," Amelia greeted. Also if she could read minds, she would definitely have agreed about the calming effect of flying. It was amazing how one sport that was theoretically competitive could also provide a calming outcome.

My favourite broom has to be the Nimbus that was passed down to me by my Da. It isn’t because it’s the best broom on the market or because it’s fast and agile but because it has a special meaning to me and I feel a connection with it that I think is especially important with flying.
Amelia loved when non-flyers and non-quidditch players were present and engaged because there was usually more to improve upon with them. They also tended to be less .... egotistical, more grounded, which was nice too. "Morning," she greeted of the Ravenclaw. Taking note of his assignment as well. Another nimbus fan.

"Hello Trinetta!" She greeted, appreciating the Ravenclaw's enthusiasm. Okay so she had to admit this was quite the advertisement that Nettie offered in her assignment. Yet personal too which was rather nice.

Once all the students seemed to have arrived, Amelia opened up the box and began to read the responses she got from the students. Flipping through and casually skimming through the important bits mentioned and leaving off names of who said what. "Seems we have lots of Nimbus fans here," Amelia noted in conclusion.

"So there's quite A LOT of broom manufacturers on the market and even though we've only mentioned about three in our favorite broomsticks, although my preference to the jollyrocket of lately, can you name some of the OTHER models available? Or if you can't think of a broomstick model, a spec you know about the model will do just fine."

Torii tried to follow along as the professor rattled off a list of twenty or so replies. She tried to remember all of the suggested ones, but she'd really just lost count. That was important, too, because apparently they needed to list another broom model they knew of, which meant that nobody had come up with the model today's lesson would focus on.

Or, that's what she guessed.

Tori grew still as she focused on trying to remember any other type of broom that came to mind. "What about the Oakshaft 79?" she asked, remembering something about this ancient broom being worth a lot of money. Also, wasn't there something about some lady crossing the Atlantic, and this broom being the one she used?

Hmm...

Well, maybe somebody else could come up with some other fact.

Oh, so they didn’t get to start flying yet. How much longer would they need to be on the ground? As for the discussion on broomsticks, Cordelia was only interested if someone was going to say which brooms were the fastest or the best for quidditch. ”Cleansweep?” No, she didn’t have a specific model number for that, but she knew it was a type of broom. Not the best of brooms as far as she knew, but then again she didn’t have much experience on actually flying different models of brooms. From what she heard of everyone else’s favorite broomstick she formed an opinion of what the best broomsticks were. She was really hoping to be able to get her own broom that could fly really fast one day, but she was still a first year and also brooms were expensive and she didn’t exactly have the money for something as expensive as a broomstick. Today Cordelia was hoping that the discussion was going in the direction of them being able to test different kinds of broomsticks, or better yet, try out a new model of broomstick. Or maybe some sort of Halloween activity, seeing as it was Halloween. Not that she was much of a Halloween person. Whatever they did this lesson, Cordelia just hoped that it wouldn’t be entirely theoretical and that they would be able to take off on their broomsticks soon.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Now, this was a stumper. Daisy closed her eyes as she went through as many broomstick models as she could in her mind. What was that Asian one? Ah, now Daisy remembered as her eyes opened and she raised her hand. "I think there's a Japanese model called the Yajirushi."
