Default DADA Lesson - 1 Don't Go Into the Light

It's the first official day of school and the first class at that. Hopefully you took Trent's advise and got yourself some sleep. As the notice stated, you should be properly attired for the practical lesson.

The corridor leading to classroom 104 is quite bright, and the grounds outside the windows appear to be awakening at this relatively early point in the morning. This is a stark contrast to the inside of the classroom. Once you enter, you'll immediately notice that it's no longer nearly 8 am. Indeed, the inside of the classroom depicts a slightly cloudy, night sky.

That's not the only thing strange about the classroom, the setting is void of any desks or chairs. Nothing about the room looks like a classroom, it doesn't look like a room at all but a bog of sorts. It's a dark "night" as the moon is currently being obscured by a cloud with no intention of going anywhere, but Headmaster Trent can be found not too far from the door, lantern in hand, while he waits for the students to come in.

Step lively, there's a full lesson ahead.

OOC: Welcome to the first lesson of the term everyone!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24 hours

The lesson hasn't started yet

CLASS HAS BEGUN!

Class progression:
- Replies
- Replies and Question 1
- Question 2 + walking
- Start of Mini-Activity: Get in boats
- Mini-Activity: Follow the light
- Mini-Activity: You get a light and you get a light
- Main Acitivity: Practical

What could go wrong?

Well. The headmaster was asking the self proclaimed conspiracy theorist of Hogwarts with that one. From the various creatures that lived in these sorts of conditions to a sudden torrential downpour, there were literally endless possibilities as to what could go wrong. Though Derf had to admit that the headmaster holding his lantern gave off a very vivid image of a hinkypunk, as Bel had pointed out earlier and was likely why many seemed stuck on that answer. There were also kappas to consider in these conditions, which was the second creature to pop into Derf's mind as he looked around.

Though, if he was being honest, his true distraction was in the way that his feet were sinking into the mud. So he took a moment to tug and pull his feet free. Maybe he ought to step in place a bit to try and keep himself from sinking? "Given visibility and the terrain like some have mentioned..." the 17-year-old began upon raising his hand. "....I reckon the risk of losing items is pretty high. Like...if you don't perform a Gripping Charm on your wand hand, well, you could drop is and it will just get suck in the mud somewhere you can't see it. Which would then make you pretty defenseless against all those creatures that others brought up too."

And, well, to tack on to Zoryn's bit about ruining shoes...Derf's shoe popped right off when he moved to tug his other leg free from the mud. So, well, there was a visual aid to his answer?

The lengths he went to disguise himself were admirable, laughable but anything he needed to do to get over what he imagined must have been a truly embarrassing moment in the young man's life. He'd be a good Headmaster and not bring it up. "Hello strange boy I've never seen before, who certainly didn't profess anything to me." Yep, he was a pro at this pretending. A natural.

Malachi looked once again to his watch. Only a few minutes left til they could get this show on the road. He looked to those already present. "Watch your step and where you stand while we wait for the others to arrive. I'm afraid when I cast the charm, my wand added it's own little additions." Creepy crawlies along the floor. Overly muddy areas that would make shoes awful messy. He wasn't sure what else. He probably should have checked to find out what else.

Nothing they couldn't handle he was sure! Nothing dangerous at least, so not a tremendous concern for him.

"We'll begin in another couple minutes."
Oh noooo...he recognized him. Under his hoodie Mark's face flushed red. Not had he recognized him but the Headmaster made an awful attempt to play off last evening as if nothing happened. That would only draw more attention between them.

Still continuing to try faking his voice Mark just nodded at him and said "Uh yeah. Stranger Sir. I didn't say anything to about anything that happened the night before I had no control over." OH AH!! That just made it worse he was sure of it.

The second year Ravenclaw took a few more steps behind a couple other students and felt his foot sink just a bit into a muddy patch in the floor or uh...ground pulling his foot up the bottom of his shoe now ruined. Just as the Headmaster warned them of little additions.

With a flick of his wand, the door to the defense classroom swung shut. At this point, it essentially disappeared, being disillusioned like it was. All around them, running in every direction, the bog stretched. It could easily have been mistaken for miles and miles of swamp like land.

"Gather round, gather round." He waited a moment for the ones further away to move closer. "Right then, first lesson you'll learn here, late students will not be permitted into the classroom. You've all found yourself on the right side of the door and it would do you well to keep finding yourself on the right side of it." At current, the door was sealed shut magically. It wouldn't open until it needed to be. "Nothing any of you need to concern yourself with today." No, they were present and accounted for.

With the door closed, the lantern in his hand was essentially the only light source. The cloud settling over the moon hadn't moved an inch. It would be doing them no favours this morning tonight.

"I'd like everyone to take a look around." It was obvious they weren't in a classroom at the moment, yes, but had they been taking any real note of their surroundings? How many of them considered the setting and were already actively thinking about the lesson's possibilities? Coming in and chatting with friends was alright (when kept in check), but surely it could wait. This was time for learning.

"Tell me an issue or outright danger you can run into while travelling through this sort of terrain, especially but not limited to it being nighttime." Basically, what could go wrong?
Hinkypunks were certainly a major danger in this sort of location, but Mark wanted to think outside the box. Continuing to mask his voice he spoke up. "If it's dark out like this and your alone or are separated from your group. Red Caps could find you an easy target if they are burrowed underground." He figured the Hinkypunk was the better answer but Mark wanted to try for something different

So this new Headmaster had some rules of his own?

Lucas tilted his head as the man talked. The rule didn't sound bad and was something that was normal for professors: don't be late to class. Simple. It didn't sound bad at all. But he couldn't help but wonder what the man had against late-comers. And if he knew that it now felt as if they were locked inside, in a room that looked....... well.

To make things worse, they were talking about dangers already. Frowning slightly, he looked around at the area as other students talked, even squinting a little to get some kind of clue. There were a lot of things that the others were mentioning that clicked in his head as they said it: not seeing anything properly, hinkypunks, and someone even said that everything could go wrong?

......... UH.

This was making him feel VERY uneasy.

Still frowning, he slowly raised his hand up in the air and decided to say something that, he hoped, no one else had said. "Well, uh, you could get bitten." Pause. "I mean, you could be wandering around the bog, or just standing still, I guess, and then get bitten by a creature and..... it could be venomous. And if you're stuck in a bog..... thing on your own, I guess it might be hard to get help?" Owls didn't fly that quickly.

"And it's not just creatures but plants too!" He nodded in what he hoped was a confident way.

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

Being the nosy kid that he was, Józef was in the habit of looking at everyone who spoke, and so of course he didn't miss his WORST ENEMY EVER as he greeted the headmaster from the spot DIRECTLY BEHIND HIM.

Max.

Jó was going to watch you closely, kid. CLOSELY. And make sure no one mistook him for the weird annoying boy who definitely wasn't as cool as he was.

After a moment of squinting and staring, the second year turned back around, making no effort to hide the scowl on his face. Not that the scowl lasted long, though, because Lucas had arrived and now it was time to wriggle his way through all of the people to stand next to him. Józef knew that he was embarrassed, but the events of last night were FAR too amusing, and he wasn't going to let his dormmate avoid him OR forget about it all.

What were friends for?!

He was about to speak, but quickly closed his mouth and turned back to the Headmaster when the door swung shut. He could tease Lucas later - for now, things seemed like they were about to get interesting as the room seemed to darken even further. Maybe that was his imagination, but he was totally on board with this new headmaster and his eerie lessons.

Hand waved in the air until it was his turn to answer. "You could get SUPER stuck. You know, like CAN'T ESCAPE EVER stuck, where the bog drags you down under and you know, you started with just your feet stuck but then you're up to your armpits and after a while your head would go under!" Oh, and especially at night time? That was another part of the question! "And at night, there's less people about, so you'd be less likely to be rescued because no one would hear you scream and even if they did they couldn't see you!"

Sounded like a pretty grim way to go, if you asked him.

Okay, so, the disappearing door? Did not inspire a lot of confidence in Abra. He tried to focus on Headmaster Whatshisname, as it was pretty obvious the lesson was about to start, but kept glancing back towards where the door had been, as though he might will it back into existence. Unless it still did exist and was just... invisible. That thought made him feel slightly better, and, as he realised it was probably the most likely scenario, he decided to go with that.

Uhhh... Uhhhhhhhhhh... Wait, what?

Abra blinked, and looked around, and realised that everyone was already answering a question. Merlin. Another fantastic start; he'd missed it.

But he could guess what it was. Hazards and stuff, about the situation they were currently in, maybe. Yeah, that'd do. Abra squinted towards the light, and therefore the professor, and raised his hand somewhat tentatively; after last year, he was a little nervous about opting to stay quiet. Maybe more than a little nervous. Maybe more nervous than he might be about giving a stupid answer, hence, having a go.

"You could trip and fall..." Except that had obviously already been said, so... "... into a portal. A bog-portal. That takes you to another dimension. Where a monster is waiting because it wants to eat you." He nodded, a super serious expression on his dimly lit face.

Igor was not expecting an answer so ominous so early that the lesson had not even begun. He took a deep gulp of nothing as he went to find somewhere to stand. Now wishing taller so that he couldnt get lost in bogs. Not pleasant thoughts at all. Or was this normal? He was only a first year so he didn't know.

But better being her with someone he knows like Harri who was here know. Oh, the feast. that was something he was trying to forget...

"Not really since I got pushed by Odaline...and thought her hair was pretty. Rather embarrassing first feast"

Love potion and all still. Oh. Headmaster was talking....good thing he wasnt late or he wasnt getting in the door. He would have to remember that for next class. It was easy to get lost here. The more he thought on it the more answers where said and by the time he even got to direction, darkness, or things in the bog. Well those had already been said.

Best keep quiet and listen.

Well thats another one panicking, but that was said also.

Patrick tried to think of all of the things that could go wrong in a bog. He supposed you could get stuck, have hidden creatures, not know where you are because your footsteps are gone. He hated the swamp lands back in the states it was always a terrifying experience.

He heard everyone’s answers and agreed. “The hidden creatures is a big part. But I really think that you could get lost easier than anything and that creates a huge danger.” he continued to scratch down everyone else’s thoughts in a list.

Josie looked up pausing in thought, Dangerous things in a bog?... Wasn't there plenty? She glanced around the room, hearing people talking about magical creatures for the most part, but her grandfather was from Georgia... and with that in mind, "If we were in the states, professor one could worry about alligators or crocodiles." The animals were kinda scary right? And they liked wet damp places like this.

So far so good, the headmaster’s response to the greetings were all well and good. Septimus himself gaining a polite good morning in return of his own greeting. There wasn’t much familiarity but then the fourth year wasn’t expecting it, at least not outside the student leaders. It had to be hard to keep track of EVERYONe in the school on the first day. The Ravenclaw would settle not being on someone’s bad side out of the options. And safe…so he was following the man’s instructions as they all awaited the start of the lesson.

Constant Vigilance…even without Hirsch.

Soon enough Professor, um Headmaster Trent, was calling for their attention and proximity to begin and Septimus moved just a little closer to listen. The fourth near absently nodding in understanding of the tardiness rule. Yeah…no lateness for him if he could help it at all. He didn’t want to have to worry about the punishment for not being in the class. Not to mention missing what they were learning. For instance the first question of the day, his gaze flickering around their darkened surroundings.

Bogs and getting lost, hinkypunks, attacks in general.

“Definitely a good chance of getting lost when the shadows all look the same. Even if you know the place, familiar landmarks could be there right in front of you and you miss them.”

The professor Headmaster was funny, wasn't he? Chloe gave him a grin, doubly big for knowing her name right off like that. After last term, it was nice to have someone who seemed somewhat normal standing at the head of the class. Maybe he wasn't normal. Maybe he was also going to end up being evil, or maybe he had bad breath or something. He had the benefit of the doubt for now.

"Soggy feet, sir. Getting damp and being unable to get dry again is pretty perilous. And also very unpleasant. And smelly." Not the end of the world, but everyone else already stole the good answers. "I think being anywhere in which you can't see what's around you or under your feet is dangerous, and a Dark creature like a hinkypunk can very easily lead you astray. But I'm still going with wet feet."

Toddles could not WAIT to tell the Mister Master Headmaster that he was done with the task he had been given. Truly and not in a Toddles way done too! With much much MORE important things to do than tickle his nose with the feather duster between trophies and plaques. All the dust from peeking inside the trophies hoping to find HIS Fluffsies inside made Toddles sneeze terribly all over, so Toddles has to wipe away all his elfsie germs too...and elfsie bogeys could be particularly sticky! Hopefully Toddles no missed any!

Toddles POPPED right into classroom 104 with his elfsie magic and landed right SQUISH in front of the Mister Master Headmaster.

"Toddles does as Mister Master Headmaster asks!" Toddles revealed gleefully and his tone implying much hurry. "Toddles is done doing Mister Master Headmaster's bidding for now?"

His big round eyes looked ever so hopeful. He had HIS Fluffsies to find or else his little elfsie heart would shrivel into nothing without HIS Fluffsies!

It was dark and cold and wet. What COULDN'T go wrong? The darkness made Natalie want to go back to sleep, but she had a feeling that professors (and Headmasters) would frown upon napping Prefects. She wondered how Max got away with it. Speaking of Max, his answer was ridiculous, as was the answer that came from Zachary. They were both two smart-alecks and were asking to get in trouble. Natalie had to resist the urge to roll her eyes at the both of them.

Determined to provide better answers than those two boys in her house, Natalie rose her hand. "You could get lost quite easily, sir. You could lose your shoes, or ruin them, like Zoryn said. And if you got caught in a bog at night when it's cold, you could get hypothermia." AND DIE.

She'd been about to speak up and say that that wasn't what she had meant, but then the Headmaster added that part about 'and not each other'. He got it. Probably not that she had been being facetious, but in general....

The conversation turned to what could go wrong then and somebody (Josie) had already mentioned what she'd been thinking, but it bared repeating. "Definitely alligators! The bog equivalent of a shark, eating everything in its path up to and including people!" It might sound to some like Archer was scared right now and they'd be right. Alligators and crocodiles were no laughing matter! "And fear is their bacon bits!" And now she was looking around for any sign of the shifty creatures, really wishing the Headmaster hadn't shut the door like that. Because now what were they supposed to do if one of the things attacked?! She highly doubted there were any arrows available...

Also, were there mosquitos in here? Because she could almost swear she'd just been bitten, her arm itched like it anyway. She scratched subtlely at the point of the suspected bite.

To be honest, Harri could hardly care that they were in a dark classroom and was standing on what looked and felt like a swap wetland and that was saying something because the newly sorted Gryffindor disliked m o i s t u r e. But it was her very first class at Hogwarts and she was too excited to mind it.

Turning to Igor, she tilted her head. Sounds like her friend didn't enjoy his first feast as much as she. That was sad. Also, who was Odaline? ...A question that has to wait until later because by now the door had closed and the class has officially started.

Look around, the Headmaster said.

Whoa. OKAY. Very dark. Very cool.

An issue or danger one could run into while being in that kind of place? Harri listened to the other answers. Losing one's way and getting stuck there forever (merlin that was SO her), creatures, trees???, wet feet. Did she have anything to add? Nope. Her eleven year old brain didn't have any other answer, thanks. So she stood there without a word, nodding, until the house elf appeared. "OH! Toddles, hi!" She waved in the dimness.

Aaron began to giggle at the man's proclamation of HUFFLEPUFF!, but then he stopped himself. Because he was a FIFTH YEAR now...and that meant he was an older, more mature Aaron Botros. So, instead, he beamed at the new Headmaster and bounced on the ball of his feet a bit. He'd just have to get the excitement out in other, more appropriate ways. So he wasn't embarrassing himself... cause that tended to happen a lot these days.

Being a teenager was really embarrassing. All on its own.

It was difficult to maneuver with so little light, but the Hufflpuff did his best, inching closer to the teacher and his classmates. The false moon, actually, wasn't that helpful, given that it was mostly obscured, but anyway. He had to stop himself from casting lumos. There was an aesthetic at play, and who was he to disturb it. And though this was a lesson about Hinkypunks (he was assuming again), this setting would've worked great for Werewolves, as well. Spooky!

...and HOUSE ELF!.... That was a house elf, yeah? He squinted in the direction of the popping noise.. and the high-pitched, squeaky voice. It sounded like one of the elves. He didn't allow himself much time to debate it, however. All would be revealed in good time...he figured. The class wasn't that long.

Back on topic! "Poisonous or harmful plants. For example, Devil's Snare. It thrives in the dark, and the wet. So...say a person accidentally steps too close to it, or steps ON IT... It could suffocate the life right out of them!" But not exclusively Devil's snare. Plants were generally terrifying, given their unassuming appearance. Of course, bees required flowers to live, so those weren't that terrible.

It hadn't escaped his notice how some looked to the door when it closed. Even now some still spared a glance in the direction it used to be.

So long as they weren't screaming or otherwise creating unnecessary disruption. It was like he'd said in his rules, he was in charge of the situation and they didn't have to worry. The subject dealt with the dark arts. It wasn't going to be sunshine and daisies but it wouldn't be outright dangerous either.

That was what the real world was for.

He moved forward when the Headmaster beckoned them but remained on the outside still.

The problem with this school was that Caolan wasn’t sure how literal he should go with his answers. In his head the dangers were pretty obvious but were they too muggle-ly for this class? Y’know, tripping over and all that.. He also didn’t want to be the first one to answer, those over eager students tended to be bullied back where he was from and as the ‘new kid’ in this school he really didn’t want to make a bad impression. He tentatively raised his hand. That was what they did here right? Or were they just the shout the answers out sort of place because that could get messy really fast. He hoped that someone else would get there first but it seemed like that was not the case.

“You can’t really tell where you’re treading so anything could be on the floor waiting for you to trip over it or step into.” Health and safety and all that. Was that too obvious though? “And it being all boggy here you could probably sink if you weren’t careful” he continued. That wasn’t just limited to the time of day it was either. Caolan had memories of getting stuck in a bog once when out with his father. It really wasn’t fun.

"Correct." He'd been worried the students would see the environment and immediately jump to a small set of magical factors but if the first response was any indication of how things would progress then he was pleased.

"Vision is limited, especially on cloudy nights like this one. One wrong step and you could find yourself in deep trouble. Literally."

Under normal circumstances, she’d be concerned about that, but so far he hadn’t seemed dangerous (aka anything like the professors last term) Maybe he just wasn’t the type to remember names, but then he’d disillusioned the door so maybe it wasn’t that.

“Like Bel had mentioned earlier, there’s a chance of creatures like hinkypunks living in the bog and leading people astray. Possibly dugbogs too, if it’s particularly marshy. Plus, it’s possible to just get lost on your own if you don’t know where you are or if the ground is solid beneath you,” she responded, having moved closer to the lantern but not close enough to bother her adjusted eyesight. Constant vigilance applied to everything after all.

Malachi nodded along thoughtfully as the Prefect offered up her response. She'd given the obvious answer, yes, but redeemed herself with the subsequent responses. "Also correct. Any number of creatures--magical and mundane--could be lurking in a place like this. Getting lost is just as worrisome. The latter wouldn't be so much an issue for wizards who know how to apparate but for younger ones and muggles it can be a real fix."

So very politely he asked, "can you be more specific, headmaster? because from a magical creature attacking us to a muggle stabbing us - everything can go wrong"

"That's the idea." He said, mindblown the boy seemed to miss the point entirely, or perhaps he just wasn't used to thinking deeply enough. "Specificity limits your scope of thinking in this scenario. I want to know what you think could go wrong. If I say magical wise, you'll throw creatures at me or something along those lines and ignore the mundane things that can be as bothersome. I say mundane, you ignore the magical things. I simply want you to think. That's it. Look around. First thing to come to mind. It's an open discussion." Keep up kid.

Blisters. Huh. "I suppose your right on that. Particularly if you've managed to get lost as another classmate mentioned. What could go wrong? Uhhh... how about everything? Or nothing at all. It really was all a matter of how one looked at situations like this. Things going wrong could be a very good learning experience, you learned what to do and what not to do. Like.. don't try to cross the swamp in that one corridor because you might come very close to losing a prized possession. You live and you learn.

Taking as good a look around as she could now that her eyes had adjusted to the darkness a bit more there was a lot that could happen. Rylee raised her hand before answering the question, not that she was sure she was seen doing so. "A lot could happen in the darkness if you don't know where you are." They could get lost, trip/fall and hurt themselves or get attacked by any number of creatures or even a person. "You could get attacked by a Gytrash. They hunt during the night and blend into the darkness." Meaning if you didn't have a really strong source of light you could be in for a very big problem.

"You're absolutely right." It was the less obvious answer but no less correct given there was no right or wrong answer in the moment. He just happened to like where her thought process was going. "Gytrash thrive in darkness and without sufficient lighting, they can pull you into it and devour you before you can strike a match or fumble for your wand."

Of course, in such situations, one would be wise to have their wand at the ready with lighting charms for days but in the event they didn't...sitting ducks, really.

Did the headmaster know that there were so many things that could go wrong when wandering in a place like this at night? From creatures to terrain to human error, she could think of any number of scenarios that could mean the end.

"It'd be easy to lose your head and your way in a place like this, particularly if you're aware of the type of creatures that might be lurking inside. You might be so caught up watching for signs of movement that you lose track of which way you're going, or so distracted by watching your step, you don't notice the creature lying in wait."

"A very important point I hope everyone takes to heart. Well done." Malachi had no doubt the students would give him dangers that took place outside the individual, he expected those. The fact someone brought up internal issues left him impressed. "At times, we can be our own worst enemies and our biggest stumbling blocks. Psych yourself out enough and you won't be able to concentrate on a solid plan to get yourself out of trouble."

He looked the class over. "Keeping calm is crucial, no matter what situation you find yourself in. You have to remain focused, otherwise you're just making it easier for whatever may be hunting you."

Looking around now, Ewan analysed his surroundings briefly considering the role that the bog would play and also the fact that it’s night time too. After holding his hand up patiently to be called upon, he answered Professor, the night time could impair your vision slightly which could lead you off your original path into the bog. Not to mention all of the creatures that could be around”. Pausing for a second to look around, he continued “Don’t Hinkypunks tend to live in bogs or wetlands? So that could possibly be a danger”. He was sure there were other creatures that could be dangerous here but this one seemed the obvious choice at least.

Yes, hinkypunks. Malachi didn't comment on this as a few others had already been addressed for offering it up but he did find need to expound on the limited vision. "You're on to something there." A place like this, you'd wanna make sure you knew where you were going. "With the layout of this sort of area being what it is, limited vision is one of the quickest ways to head down the wrong path and get yourself in more problems." She was so focused on her line of thinking that she actually jumped a little when the door slammed shut. Nobody had...noticed that, had they? Speaking of noticing things, just where was the door? Torii was so new to the school and so bitter about the move that she hadn't developed a trust for anybody just yet. She wanted to believe they were okay, though, but...wasn't this the school with all the Inferi? Ughh.

So anyway, back to the room. The really dark room. Torii edged closer to the lantern and felt for her wand. She'd light it, but nobody was, and sometimes light didn't do any good in the darkness. Sometimes it just showed the predator its prey. She looked around, considering the answer to the Headmaster's question. Some kid spoke up and said that everything could go wrong, and Torii agreed.

She raised her hand, unsure if the Headmaster could even tell in a setting like this. "So I was just thinking about how darkness can be both good and bad. I mean, on one hand, we can't see where we're going or what's out there," she said. "On the other hand, though, if we shine light from our wands, we're basically showing a predator its prey." Then there were other things to think about, like creatures who sensed fear and things like that.

....Huh.

"That's an interesting point you got there." He conceded, thinking it over for a moment while his free hand rubbed absentmindedly at his chin. Indigo listened to the answers given by his classmates. He didn't want to repeat one, or say something too similar to an answer that was already given. "Nasty bites that could become infected or are in themselves an infection. Good point." The classroom didn't have any bugs in it, him not wanting to be bothered with the constant swatting and need for repellent but the point still stood. As human nature had arranged for, Charlie scooted in along with the others towards the light of the headmaster's lantern. However scary a dark, unknown place is, it was most certainly better than being late to class and facing the wrath of a professor, so he needn't tell her twice (perhaps other students needed the nudge, though).

She wanted to give a good and thoughtful answer, but she had very limited knowledge on wizarding things. Charlie grew anxious as she listened to her classmates give their responses, feeling horribly inferior. Hinklypunks? Dundermifflins? Hot air curses?!

She would just have to put her best foot forward anyhow.

"Losing things could grow to be particularly inconvenient." Not a danger, but an issue nonetheless. "A wizard's wand is the one thing they absolutely do not want to lose. Add all the dangers that can be found in this sort of terrain and you'd be in a right awful fix."

Did he need to tell them all to keep hold of their wands? When the spell ended on the room, they'd likely find them without problem but it would be crucial at some point in the lesson, so best they didn't.

The second year Ravenclaw took a few more steps behind a couple other students and felt his foot sink just a bit into a muddy patch in the floor or uh...ground pulling his foot up the bottom of his shoe now ruined. Just as the Headmaster warned them of little additions.
Hinkypunks were certainly a major danger in this sort of location, but Mark wanted to think outside the box. Continuing to mask his voice he spoke up. "If it's dark out like this and your alone or are separated from your group. Red Caps could find you an easy target if they are burrowed underground." Malachi cracked an amused grin at the boy's response, appreciating he'd decided to have a sense of humour about the whole thing. The Headmaster wasn't going to dwell on it, he already knew the boy's actions were potion induced and with how awkward the teenage years could be on their own, he saw no need to rub it in.

"Another important point. Thank you for bringing it up." Here he addressed the class again. "Being separated from a group is about the easiest way to be picked off.

Along the same line of biting and a good point too. Malachi nodded. "Very good. It'd be rotten luck getting bitten by something while alone in a bog. Depending on what bit you, hallucinations could start, dizziness, fatigue. If you don't die instantly, that bite's sure to make the job easier for whatever wants a bite out of you."

His job was to make them not as much sitting ducks. No, his job was to make them exemplary of defense.

Sounded like a pretty grim way to go, if you asked him.

...

.....

".....Yes." Seemed like the answer he was meant to give after a scenario like that was presented. It wasn't wrong, on the contrary it was entirely possible and something they should all consider before going wandering. It was a bit of a ramble, but the man managed to keep up. "Yes...that...that's definitely something to keep in mind."

"I like that point." He really did. Not so much for it's face value as others too had mentioned getting lost but, "Landmarks can be a real asset. Once you've gotten used to your surroundings, it becomes more difficult for you to get lost. Take note of....maybe a rock....a special tree, anything that can lead you back and help you retrace your steps. You'll give yourself a big advantage." "Soggy feet, sir. Soggy feet. It was self explanatory enough that he wouldn't be stuck on it through the next few replies--LIKE TREES, REALLY SLYTHERIN PREFECT?? TREES?--but he wasn't still on that. Nah. Nope. He was on to soggy feet. "You're not wrong. I suppose if you considered soggy feet, you could consider the possibility of developing a sort of fungal infection from the persistent moisture. Zoryn? Was that the Gryffindor's name? He'd have to remember that. For now, he focused on the Prefect's response. It was also in line with shoes. The priorities of some of these students was a bit concerning to him. At least she didn't stop at shoes.

Another for alligators.

One less composed than the other who'd mentioned alligators.

"Right....." He said, eyeing the girl in the dark for a moment. He could tell she was nervous, but he appreciated she hadn't bothered to start freaking out.

"Focus on the lesson." Toddles was a distraction, at the moment an unavoidable distraction but he needed his students to remain with their concentration in tact. "We'll be moving on soon, and he won't be able to ensure you don't get yourself lost."

It hadn't escaped him that she didn't answer the question either. Greeting the elf was insult to injury. As a first year, on the first day, he would avoid being harsh but in this subject, you really did need to not be easily distracted, and so far it didn't seem like a lesson she'd previously learned.

He'd already heard the suggestion of malevolent plants, but was grateful this one had gone on to give a concrete example. "That it could Mr. Hufflepuff." He'd learn his name too, with time. All their names. Just....first class....so many of them and so much else on his plate--but it would happen!

"Devil's Snare would be a nightmare at night in a bog. Without the correct lighting, you could walk right into it and never know until it was too late. Lose your wand like the Head Boy touched on and you'd really be in for it."

With the last reply covered, the Headmaster looked to the elf again. The untrustworthy elf. The elf who lost THREE shopping lists and was no longer allowed to do more than one task at a time. It meant seeing a lot more of the elf but Circe knew it was the only way to make sure he actually GOT things done.

"No, Toddles is not done." He replied firmly, still sore the elf had spent the Hogwarts funds on three separate occasions and could not fully account for them. "I'll check the armour gallery later but I'd like you to get on the owlery with Nimma and Algamus."

He looked to the class again. "Moving on!" No need to keep standing around here. This wasn't where they needed to be. "Everyone, follow me. Watch your step, don't dilly dally, we've got places to be. I'm sure it hasn't escaped any of you that I'm the only one currently in possession of any form of light. Keep your wands in their holsters, reholster them if you've drawn them. I don't want to see a single illumination charm cast. That entirely defeats the purpose of this little exercise." The light was bright enough that it travelled some distance. Even if they couldn't see him, they could still very much see him.

"Follow not only the light, but the sound of my voice." Were they clear? "When I've stopped talking, it will be especially important to pay attention to this light, my light."

With that, the man began to move through the bog. The immediate area had bushes, low hanging branches, muddy soil and the occasional over grown root. So long as they were cautious, they would be fine. "Quick recap while we walk." He said, carefully moving through the terrain. It was very important that they followed his instructions because he'd turned his back to them in order to see the path ahead. "Plenty of dangers in bogs. Magical creatures. Magical plants. Regular, predatory creatures. Bugs. The terrain itself. There were quite a few suggestions...and a few consequences. That being said, I'd like to discourage everyone from tripping and breaking your neck. Similarly, I wouldn't recommend falling onto a jagged rock. If you don't die, it doesn't break the rules but....still painful and you'll miss the fun stuff." He covered a few of the answers touched on while he walked, occasionally pausing to ensure they were still going the right way--inconvenient for anyone walking too close to him.

"A few of you mentioned hinkypunks, and in case it isn't by this point obvious that they'll be the focus of this lesson, they are. That said, what do you know about hinkypunks? Or, you can tell me what actions you would take if you found yourself travelling through an area like this with several lanterns leading off in different directions." They could answer both if they wanted to, but he'd appreciate them answering even one.

OOC: Aaaand we're moving. Right now your students should be moving with Malachi through the bog, doing nothing but following his lantern. He's asked two questions, they can answer both or just one--or neither he may not know This lesson will move on again in about 24 - 28 hours from the point of this post <3

is Was Vita particularly proud that her answer had gotten praise? Yes. Inside, the sixth year was beaming with pride. Outwardly she did her best to maintain a calm expression and bowed her head when a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. So far, so good.

Falling into step with the others, the brunette let her senses kick into full gear as she followed the headmaster on their journey. As for his question...

"Hinkypunks use light to lure travelers off track, giving them a false sense of hope. A light in the dark isn't always a good thing where they are concerned, particularly because they have been known to produce fireballs."

Mark's answer was more about the Redcaps but it seemed the Headmaster was more focused on the other aspect of his answer on getting picked off if you were separated. Which Redcaps could do if they so chose to. It turned out that the lesson was about Hinkypunks as he had deduced earlier in his thoughts and from the other classmates answers. The whole scenario just screamed Hinkypunk.

He paid no mind to the House Elf that appeared because it did not concern him. But he did wonder what the House Elf had to do in the Amour Gallery. Probably just dusting the suits of Armor in there. Nothing else but that to do in there it seemed.

Removing his wand and lighting the tip of it with the illumination charm never crossed his mind. He was so focused on the Headmaster NOT FROM ANY KIND OF POTION MIND YOU...but just from being entranced by the lesson at hand kept his mind busy with Questions and Answers. He hurried along and began to follow the man...NOT BECAUSE A POTION MADE HIM WANT TO! HE JUST WANTED TO OKAY? It was for lesson purposes. If he didn't he would be separated from the group and get lost.

"They will sometimes wail or holler to attract attention and make unsuspecting travelers inspect the noise as well as the light. As though it were an injured person, perhaps." He responded to the Question, forgetting to disguise his voice to avoid being pegged as the Headmaster's loyal servant.

What could go wrong? Basically, Drewett could give an entire list of what could go wrong in this setting, in this class, in this school, in today's wizarding society and community. He was also rather good at spotting the pros and cons of things and situations. He very much preferred running away and noping his way out of all the possibly awful things in life. Like creatures ranked higher than XX, for instance. This Ravenclaw was not having that.

Drewett chose to remain silent as he listened to his other classmates' responses. He was already making a bit of a face as he visualized what they all said, and he was glad not everyone could see the face he was making. Hinkypunks...werewolves...gytrashes...trees....sur e. Basically most of the things that he'd rather avoid.

.........But keeping their wands in their holsters? Drewett was about to pull his wand out and now he was somehow gaping. Aside from being outside of Hogwarts and summer tutorials at the Stemp House, he never walked around without his wand with him. So much more when he felt limited to his other senses besides vision. This was making him rather anxious already and although he wanted to believe that the headmaster would never allow them close to serious harm, it was also hard to trust any member of the Hogwarts staff given what they've been through last term...and the term before that...and the term before that. Opting not to get into trouble, however, he remained quiet but kept his fingers on his holster. Just in case. He wasn't taking it out though.

Back to the question. As if it were precautionary, Drewett tried to mentally remember what the rank of this creature was until he released...it probably wasn't ranked. He wasn't sure if it were ranked higher than XX, and he would know. He spent a considerable amount of time trying to know what creatures he wanted to avoid. With that, he awkwardly raised his hand. "I-I believe they're not ranked in the m-ministry classification of creatures, sir... p-probably because they might n-not be considered creatures...." They were wispy smoke creatures, right? But not... like... a creature one can physically touch.

He hoped he made sense.

Wow.

That was all Taddy could think as he settled with the class with the discussion on their surroundings and how to survive any outcome. This was really useful to the twelve-year old. Maybe that's why Mark found him so cool, he thought. Tad was starting to agree. Now they were on the move, okay. He got right up and he only had the lead of the Headmaster and his lantern, oh, and of course his classmates. He wasn't bothered by the dirtiness of the situation. There wasn't anything overtly dangerous to him at the moment, but look were deceiving.

So what did he know about Hinkypunks? "Er... The Hinkypunk is a dance step. You know, you do the hinkypunk and then you turn yourself around." Wasn't that what it was all about? "I mean, that would kind of work here too right? Turning around and making sure nothing else funny was going on with all the lights." Surely.

Thanks to them, she had stayed away from pumpkin juice this morning... atleast from the time being. Isla would hate to lose a friend because of some boy she didn’t even like. She didn’t even know if she like boys yet!

Returning back to the professor’s question, she listened to the others answers with great interest. She wondered what Hinkypunks were? The name sounded so cool in her ears. Isla raised her hand. ”You might be stuck for hours? Oh and you still have to watch out for potential wild predators like wolves or coyotes. They like to forage near the bogs for an easy meal.” Of course she was familiar with the topic. She has been living in Scotland all her life, there will always be rough terrains, wet mossy grounds and man-eating bogs around. She had learn to stay clear of them at a very young age.

Rylee wrapped an arm around her shoulders giving her a gentle squeeze. "It takes some getting used to but I'm always up early. If you're worried about oversleeping I can stop by your dorm and knock on the door for you." There was no harm in checking in on her cousin and her dorm mates as well. "Mm... I uh... yeah... pumpkin juice isn't high up on my list anymore either..." And she would much rather not speak of things that happened last night. Even though the situation was mostly taken care of it still made her stomach do flips.

SPOILER!!: Headmaster Trent!

Rylee nodded only slightly in response to the Headmaster though there was a small sense of happiness coursing through her that she had been correct. And they were moving on!

"Isla keep close, yeah?" she whispered to the younger lioness. It wasn't that she didn't trust her cousin, it was simply knowing her knowing how lessons like this went. With Isla being a firstie and never casting any charms yet, Rylee was going to be keeping as close an on eye her as possible. Along with several others that she was used to keeping an eye on for various reasons. "Be careful."

Each step was taken carefully and with as much preciseness as she could manage. The goal was indeed not to trip, break her neck and die or fall on a jagged rock and miss out on a fun lesson as the Headmaster so kindly put it. Which truthfully had the ginger lioness smirking to herself.

"When hit with the Lumos Duo Charm they solidify and become blinded by the light so you can defend yourself against them quickly," she answered raising a hand into the air. And hopefully whatever defense used against them was done properly and effectively at that.

Oh good. He might have been behind in his studies compared to his classmates but he was able to answer questions logically and get them correct without making a fool of himself. However everyone else’s complex responses about specific magical creatures and whatnot did make him feel a little bit insecure. How much would he have to learn before the end of the year in order to successfully pass his OWL’s? He was half listening to his fellow students responses when a house elf magically appeared in front of the Headmaster. He hadn’t made his mind up about the poor creatures yet.

The class progressed and Caolan followed behind the group in front not wanting to seem too eager but close enough to be able to listen to everything that was being said considering it was too dark to use his notebook to take notes. Guess he’d have to store it all in his noggin’. He kept one eye on his feet and the other on the environment in front of him ducking under branches and almost walking into another student in the process.

As for the lesson subject Caolan knew the basics which had already been covered by the answers from the other students so he didn’t raise his hand to answer the questions. He’d probably say something stupid or too basic and he just wasn’t prepared for the ridicule. He DID have an answer for the second question about what they could do to prepare themselves. “Carry your wand at all times.” It was simple but correct right? Just don’t go out without your wand or else you’re screwed.

Huh, so class wouldn’t always be like this. That was a good thing, Cordelia concluded when she saw the expansive swamp around her. Everywhere was just mud, mud, mud. Mud. Why did it have to be mud? As much as she enjoyed outdoor activities, Cordelia was not overly fond of mud. Mud was icky and sticky. Here she was, stuck in it with no way out for the duration of the lesson. This was so gross. There was one thing Cordelia hated almost as much as her useless pancreas, and that thing was mud. Funny thing for a kid who loved playing outdoors to hate, but that was just how life was. What were the issues with the terrain her? Hello, mud was clearly the answer. ”You could get stuck in the mud and not be able to get out or get lost in the dark.” This being defense against the dark arts, how to not get stuck in mud was probably not the direction the professor was going to take the class, but this was her first day of classes ever after all. The first year girl didn’t have any other information to draw from.

Cordelia trudged along through the mud, the ground squelching beneath her feet, as she followed the headmaster through the bog. Oh, hinkypunks. Never heard of them before. What was a hinkypunk? She carefully followed the headmaster’s instructions as she followed the light. Wouldn’t want to get lost in this bog. Dying was not allowed in her very first class ever. Cordelia wanted to survive past her first day, thank you very much. Now, to answer the headmaster’s question, what did she know about hinkypunks? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Surely the headmaster wasn’t expecting answers from the first years regarding hinkypunks. The second question posed by the headmaster, however, she could answer. ”I don’t know anything about hinkypunks, headmaster, but if I were traveling like this and saw lanterns leading off in different directions I guess I would try to stick to the path I was on to avoid getting lost.” What did different lanterns going in different directions have to do with hinkypunks? Hopefully by the end of this lesson she would have the answer.

"Aren't they the ones that carry lanterns and can hurl fireballs at you?" Josie had to keep herself from gulping at the idea. Being locked in a dark room like last year seemed like a walk in the park suddenly compared to the possibly of being burned to a crisp... but the other question kind of stumped her. She couldn't run away considering the chance of a fireball to the back... and clearly following them could lead to her being injured in other ways... Plus what if she followed one of the lights offended the others and again she was facing multiple balls of flame being thrown at her.

"And pray that death at least is swift and painless..." Only halfway joking since she didn't have a better answer to offer.

Isla knew she could always count on Rylee to make her feel better. Rylee offered to knock on her first-year girl's dorm door to wake them up. Aww... how nice of her to do that for her! "Oh Rylee, I don't want to trouble you every morning. But I do appreciate your kind offer!" she smiled brightly, squeezing her older cousin's hand. Isla just wanted to become more independent and learn to be responsible for her own time.

"Okay..." Isla muttered a reply back as she huddled close to Rylee. Not once letting her hand go as they tread carefully across the rough muddy terrain. Her impulsive need to reach for her wand was growing stronger each time they took a step deeper into the dark abyss. "Rylee...I'm scared..." She might have been placed in Gryffindor house but that does not mean she was immune to the fear of danger and darkness.

Hearing about the Hinkypunks made her feel wary about her surroundings too. Rylee did say that if they aimed Lumos duo towards them, they would be blinded and frozen?! If that is true, shouldn't they be reaching for their wands now! Rylee made sure to hide behind Rylee if the creature decided to jump out of the blue and scare them.
