DADA Lesson - 1 Don't Go Into the Light It's the first official day of school and the first class at that. Hopefully you took Trent's advise and got yourself some sleep. As the notice stated, you should be properly attired for the practical lesson. The corridor leading to classroom 104 is quite bright, and the grounds outside the windows appear to be awakening at this relatively early point in the morning. This is a stark contrast to the inside of the classroom. Once you enter, you'll immediately notice that it's no longer nearly 8 am. Indeed, the inside of the classroom depicts a slightly cloudy, night sky. That's not the only thing strange about the classroom, the setting is void of any desks or chairs. Nothing about the room looks like a classroom, it doesn't look like a room at all but a bog of sorts. It's a dark "night" as the moon is currently being obscured by a cloud with no intention of going anywhere, but Headmaster Trent can be found not too far from the door, lantern in hand, while he waits for the students to come in. Step lively, there's a full lesson ahead. The lesson hasn't started yet Class progression: - Replies - Replies and Question 1 - Question 2 + walking - Start of Mini-Activity: Get in boats - Mini-Activity: Follow the light - Mini-Activity: You get a light and you get a light - Main Acitivity: Practical |
First lesson. Kaira was thrilled. And nervous. Lesson by the Headmaster! Oh boy! She walked into the..classroom? It looked very different from what you would expect from a classroom. There were no chairs or desks. She double checked her schedule to see if she had come to the right place. But.. everything seemed right! Maybe this is the way things were carried out here. She decided to wait it out in the room.. |
And it begins... He chalked it up to muscle memory from SOREs last year, but Jackson was wide awake today. Jackson entered the classroom and as he said "Good morning Headmaster," he was distracted by the change of... hour. Was it still dark? Or dark already? Hard to tell because his eyes had to adjust a little. And nowhere to sit meant that Jackson stood along the side of the classroom. "Well I'm interested in where this is going." |
There was a feeling of excitement and nervousness that Daisy was experiencing as she made her way to the classroom. She had learnt that one had to be prepared for anything especially when it came to DADA lessons and this was no exception as she surveyed the layout of the room. "Good morning, Headmaster," Daisy greeted with a smile. |
Mornings definitely weren’t a problem when they weren’t expected to go for a run at dawn. It was the first day and Stasya was already feeling more optimistic regarding the term ahead, even if there were all sorts of new professors to learn how to deal with and she might’ve been a bit sad over the departure of the previous Flying professor. Generally, it couldn’t be anywhere near as bad as last term had been. Hopefully. The sight that greeted her upon arriving at the classroom barely registered as odd in her mind either. Professor Hirsch had rarely had a normal classroom setup and she was actively using a mental block to remember last term’s DADA lessons so it was rather expected that the classroom wouldn’t be normal. “Good morning Headmaster Trent,” she said brightly, as she’d made her way through the door and past the man, settling into a spot near the edge of the bog to wait and acknowledging her fellow prefects and the ickle Claw with a smile that probably wasn’t entirely visible. Dark rooms made it hard to be seen, even if she’d slipped her wand out to be prepared. She didn’t cast a lighting charm or anything. She just held her wand loosely in her hand, ready for anything. |
Defence against the dark arts had to be his least favourite subject. Not that it wasn't fascinating because it was and he learned lots in these classes. It was because he was scared easily when it came to dark creatures and arts and now that the new Headmaster had put up his own rules and one of them had been not to scream and run away, he was more nervous than ever before cause doing those things were his specialty. The fifth year wasn't surprised at all to see the setting of the classroom and he even let out a chuckle when Kaira checked her schedule a bit in front of him before entering the room. The night scenery did nothing to ease his nervousness and Dorian wondered why it was always supposed to be night. Why couldn't they have a lesson in the butterfly garden for once? Spotting the new Headmaster holding a lantern in his hand, the Ravenclaw nodded his head in his direction to greet him "Good eveni-- i mean morning, Headmaster" well at least he sounded a bit more confident than how he felt... After he had greeted him, he turned to look who else was present already and while he greeted Jackson with a "Sup?" he stood near Daisy while he waited for class to begin. |
Headmaster Trent, Kaira and Jackson and everyone else here! Walking into the classroom was strange but then again, wasn’t everything in Hogwarts? With the moon bright behind the ominous clouds, Ewan couldn’t help but smile slightly at the classroom. Night time was both one of his favourite and least favourite things although the clouds did spoil what he liked about the night. “Hello Headmaster Trent, How are you this morning? Or uh…evening?” he smiled at the headmaster now, genuine and rather excited for the lesson ahead. “I can’t wait to get started today” Ewan continued, rather tentatively now, which may or may not have something to do with the previous headmaster. Walking further into the classroom now, Ewan spotted some other students. “Hey Kaira, ready for your first lesson?” smiling at the first year now, he couldn’t help be excited for her. This was her first lesson! Turning to face the other Ravenclaw now, Ewan gave a smile and a wave “Hey Jackson, how was your summer?” Hopefully his fellow Ravenclaw had had a great summer and forgotten all about the last school year. |
Isla had no problem finding her way to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom this morning. Thank goodness! She didn’t want to be late on her first day of lessons! Part of her reason she woke up extra early today so she could wake the others in her dormitory. Isla didn’t want them to be late to class either so she volunteered to become an official human alarm clock for her Gryffindor sisters! Teeheee~~ Merlin, she was too eager to start using her magic! She has been waiting for this moment for soo long. She wish to flourish her wand alreadddyy~! As soon as she enters the classroom, darkness overwhelmed her senses. Oohh, what’s going on? She scanned the room, amazed seeing the indoor night skies just like the ones she saw in the Great Hall. ”Good morni~ evening, professor! Where are we?” she asked politely. |
First class of her last term and Stephanie was honestly a little sad. Though it wasn’t her much preferred class, she still didn’t want to miss it. Heading to class with everything she needed in her bag, Steph smiled and greeted the headmaster as she walked in. ”Hello, headmaster,” she also gave him a small nod. Oh my was it dark in here! Steph looked a bit confused but knew it obviously was part of the lesson and went to stand near a window of the room. Clearly it wouldn’t be smart for someone of her height to stand up front. Most students probably wouldn’t be able to see over her. |
Defense Against the Dark Arts? It was one of the fun classes, typically. And there weren't too many of those so that was saying something. 8 AM? The WORST time of the day. Despite hardly getting any sleep the night before, Zoryn Spinnet was FULL of energy. Perhaps it was because of how wonderfully she had pulled off her prank. Or maybe it was because she no longer had to worry about Sylvie Norcott. OR maybe it was because she was a seventh year and ruled the entire school, officially. Mostly likely it was because she was on some sort of sleep-deprived-energy spike. "Yo Headmaster, are we learning about dragons today?" Bringing it back for the last year. RIP Professor Hirsch. |
It would take Tessa a good few weeks to really get used to being up this early again. She still considered herself a morning person but that didn't mean the crack of dawn early. It meant, you know, 9am or 10am. Definitely NOT 7.30am. She let out a few yawns on her way to the classroom. Better to let them loose now rather than in class. Professors often took offence if students were yawning through their classes, even when those classes were first thing in the morning. Or perhaps she was just thinking about last year, a year she would gladly forget. Anyway, enough of that sort of thinking. She was trying to be extra positive.....this....year...... Her thoughts trailed off as she entered the classroom and saw, well, nothing for a moment as her eyes adjusted. The walls and ceiling mimicked the look of a night sky, but this was Defence Against the Darks Arts, not Astronomy. Tessa noticed their Headmaster surrounded by a few students and went over to them. "Good mor-eve- Hello, Headmaster. Or would you prefer Professor when you're teaching?" She asked, a curious and friendly grin on her face. She gave the room another look around, wondering whether they would be dealing with or learning about some kind of dark creature that liked bogs in the night time. |
Caolan had almost done as instructed and had an early night but truth be told there was a lot spinning around in his head from the night before and he had spent a good hour lying down in his bed staring up at the ceiling lost in his thoughts. He was trying desperately to stifle how tired he was as he turned up for the first lesson of the school year not wanting to give a bad impression. He entered the door after a group of students and blinked a few times as he was met with darkness on the other side. “Huh?” He blinked and rubbed at his eyes testing whether he was really awake or whether this was just a part of his dream. He stepped out the room for a second and then came back in spotting the Headmaster at the doorway holding a lantern. “Good.. morning Headmaster?” It WAS still morning right? He hadn’t stepped into some weird alternative universe or something.. The fifteen-year-old looked around for a seat or desk but was met with nothing of the sort. He stood by himself near a wall of the room with his arms folded across his chest. He was kinda excited about starting school but he didn’t want to show it being a cool teenage boy and everything. |
After the happenings at the feast the previous night and only managing a couple hours of sleep, three hours... maybe, Rylee was wide awake and ready to go. Managing to somehow completely avoid a specific older lion and after talking to a certain Hufflepuff things were okay. At least between the badger and herself that is. She had been able to go about her morning and get ready for the day which included a quick run around the pitch, breakfast and than back to her dorm for a shower and to get ready for the first lesson of her fourth year. And all of this before eight a.m. Good thing Rylee was a morning person, well actually she was an anytime of day person. The hyper lioness that she was had a warm friendly smile on her face as she stepped into the classroom. "Good mor- uh... Hello, Headmaster," she greeted stumbling over her words just a moment as it was morning but the room clearly depicted that of nighttime. Blue-gray eyes quickly scanned the entire area or that which she was able to see. A smile or a nod of her head was sent to anyone close enough to notice. Spotting a special younger lioness she went to stand beside her lightly bumping her shoulder against hers. "Hey, Issy. Did you have a good first night?" |
Odaline was going to kill him. That was all Igor could be thinking about as he got up this morning and remembered what happened at the feast it was so normal and then he was acting really really weird. It was just weird. That's all he could say as he walked into DADA class first thing in the morning. "Hello, Headmaster. Are you having a good morning?" Manners. Or um was it night now that he was in the room. This was some cool cool cool magic for this eleven-year-old to see. Also, that lantern made his look a million times more spooky and it wasn't even Halloween yet. ......where is he suppose to sit or is he? |
Mary walked down the corridor, hair still damp from the shower she had taken after her morning soccer practice. Noting that the lesson said appropriate attire for practical, she sported athletic clothes not unlike the ones she had worn for this morning. The only difference was, of course, that she was wearing a pair of practical leather boots. She held the hazel wand in her right hand, entering the room that very much did not look like a classroom. She stopped in her tracks, surprised by the complete atmosphere change. She stood by the door of the classroom, along with the already congregating group of students. |
There was something in the air. Because he was pretty sure he'd wake up feeling pathetic and hating his need to pretend his way through his days - but he had actually managed to get out of bed in an okay mood. He was in an even better mood by the time he reached class - because turns out running with free will did wonders in lifting up your spirits. The atmosphere of the class perked up his interest too. Was this it? Was Hogwarts finally coming through? Or were his expectations just very very low this time? Regardless, he greeted the headmaster as he entered the room and found himself a corner to be at. |
Torii was really nervous. She'd tried to will herself to push the nervousness to the back of her mind, but the moment she'd stepped out the common room and headed toward the class, she'd honestly felt sick. She was still fighting back the tears that were threatening to fall every time she thought about her mom, her dad, and her school--Ilvermorny. Yes, Ilvermorny was still her school. She was claiming that. She hadn't wanted Hogwarts, and she still didn't want it now. At least she was on time. Or, at least, she thought she was. When she entered the classroom, she started second guessing herself. It was...nighttime? And they were in a bog? ... Hinkypunks? If so, that only added to her nervousness, and she felt her stomach flutter at the thought. Noticing the Headmaster nearby, lantern in hand, the fourth year looked up at him. "Hello, Headmaster," she said, her voice a mix of a whisper and a normal tone. With that, she stepped out of the way, although she did stay kind of in the proximity of the Headmaster. |
With her books in her bag over her shoulder and her hawthorne wand in the holder on her forearm, Holly walked into the first class of the new year. Carefully moving through the doorway, her eyes focused in the dark room; noting the lack of tables and chairs. With a quick look around her, she tried to find her brother, Jorgie or Alis - but figured they would join her soon enough. Finding a space in the room she gave the Professor (and Headmaster) a very small smile. "Good morning." She didn't want to be rude... she was just... hesitant. After all, she'd never spoken to the man in front of them before. Curling her hair around her fingers, she waited silently. |
Finally! Odaline had wanted to get straight to classes as soon as she arrived here, but instead she had to sit on a stool in front of everyone, sit at a table with the worst people in the world and then deal with Igor. Who was lucky she hadn't broken both of his arms. Which explained why she did not stand anywhere near him as they gathered into the classroom. Because she still wanted to break his arms. Could they start now? There was already too much mingling happening. |
First lesson of the term. This should be interesting. Skyler was so used to last year that as she entered, she merely gave the headmaster a respectful nod and stood in an area not saying anything after that not really paying any mind to the surroundings. |
Hogwarts students had already made quite the impression on the new headmaster, she was sure, so Vita could only imagine what was going through the man's mind given his lesson was the first of the year. Honestly, she was just glad that she hadn't been one of the students making lovesick puppy eyes at and confessing her love to random classmates, because she wasn't sure she'd ever be able to live that down. Slipping into the classroom, the sixth year paused to take in her surroundings. This...looked like the perfect setting for a hinkypunk encounter, didn't it? She couldn't say she'd ever been interested in seeing one of those up close, but she was curious to see if her hunch was right. "Good morning, Headmaster Trent," She offered politely as she crossed paths with the man, noting his lantern. She wanted to add something more...welcoming, too, but she just wasn't sure how to express her hope that they hadn't completely put him off to being their fearless leader already. Spotting Zachary, Vita pushed past some younger students and took her place beside him, offering him a smile. He was stuck with her for now, she hoped he didn't mind. |
Drewett Slinkhard wasn't a jack of all trades, but he was rather skilled with a few things. And one of those things was the ability to avoid people. The moment he woke up this morning, he just wanted the world to eat him alive already. And he had to deal with the awkwardness in his dorm room with Hudson and Keenan. Drew was not at all having it today. Not. No. Nope. He kept his head low as he made his way to the classroom from Defence class, their first ever for the term and with the new headmaster. Drewett knew there were others who were probably as embarrassed as he was, but he felt weird. It was so weird. He didn't want to be here. And oh thank Merlin the room was dark. Drewett would hate it for people to see the obvious embarrassment on his face. He was avoiding a lot of things. "G-good morning, Headmaster..." he greeted and hurriedly took a space for himself at the back. He was going to be a wallflower today and for the rest of this term. |
First lesson at Hogwarts ever... no biggie. None whatsoever. Of course it had to be Defense Against the Dark Arts, easily the scariest-sounding class out of all of them. Couldn’t it have waited a few days to spring itself on her? A week or two, even? Another unpleasant surprise was that it appeared to be taking place in a swamp.... Ridiculous. Needless to say, though, Charlie would still be making a concerted effort — through gritted teeth, but an effort nonetheless. In a satchel slung over her left shoulder, she had her well-used textbook, quills, pencils, parchment, and just about everything she could ever need for the classroom. She didn’t prepare for the swamp, though.... With a gulp and a feigned sunny disposition, she made her way through the classroom door, making sure to say “Hello, Headmaster Trent!” as she passed him. She relaxed her face once she had made pleasantries with the professor (He taught and was headmaster? Weird...) and scanned the room for familiar faces. Charlie spotted Kaira and made a beeline for her, grinning at her friend, housemate, and dormmate before she began mentally preparing herself for the lesson. She would need it. |
Besides hearing his speech at the Start of Term Feast, Hanna didn't know anything about the new Headmaster. Still feeling nervous after what had happened last year, with the Headmaster, all of those rules... well, she wasn't quite sure what to expect. If she greeted him, would it be points lost? If she sat down, would it be detention? There were some confusing times last year, too, and she just wanted clear-cut definitions. Alas, no such thing. But it did appear that the castle had returned to normal. Students allowed to be at ease, so long as it was done with respect. She entered the Defense classroom, feeling very much alert after a shower and breakfast, to see that... it was NIGHT. Looking around, she saw that at least there were no chairs. There would be no confusion as to whether she had to stand or not. And, hearing other people greeting the Headmaster, she figured it would be safe to do so, and indeed she enjoyed greeting people. Felt rather rude otherwise. "Good morning Headmaster," she greeted the man, an almost nervous looking smile on her face. |
Indigo had not wanted to get out of bed this morning. Not even because of the early hour but because events from the feast the night before had been... interesting. And he didn't want to have to face anybody. But his fear of getting in trouble had won out so he was there, heading into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. Which didn't look much like a classroom at the moment. He assumed that meant this class was going to be interesting. There was the professor - er, the headmaster - by the door. Should he say good morning? Should he not? Indigo didn't know what was the proper thing to do. After last year, he was a bit anxious about the rules. He settled for saying nothing, because if Indigo had a choice between saying something or saying nothing, he generally went for saying nothing. He just glanced around the room for somebody he knew. Oh, there was Vita. He moved her way and gave her a small smile as he stood next to her. |
In theory, Cameron would have taken the Headmaster's advice to get a full eight hours of sleep. Unfortunately, however, he had been forced to stay up a little longer than intended, seeing as he had to keep his dorm mates from touching each other's hair and/or wandering off to try to get into other common rooms. This was NOT how he had wanted to spend his first night back. Stifling a yawn before stepping into the classroom, Cam tried to look as awake as possible. "Good morning, Headmaster." Okay, but the fact that the room was incredibly dark did absolutely nothing to help his current state. If anything, it only made him more sleepy. He really should have had some coffee this morning, shouldn't he? He came to stand next to Zoryn and leaned into her side a little. "Morning." How had her night been? |
Cordelia was ready for her first lesson at Hogwarts. Thanks to Isla, Cordelia was up early enough to make it to this class which was held at such an early time. This new schedule would take some getting used to. Entering the room, she found that it was not at all what she had been expecting of a classroom. It was very dark. Were all classes at this school held in dark empty rooms? Her education up until this point had come from tutors at Stemp House, so for all she knew this could be what a normal classroom was like. ”Good morning, Headmaster. Are all classes going to be like this?” Moving into the darkness of the room, Cordelia spotted her roommate Isla and went to stand by her. ”Thanks for making sure we were all up for our first lesson.” Defense against the dark arts was something that Cordelia was interested in because the man at Ollivanders had said her juniper wand with phoenix feather core would be good for defensive magic. This subject might turn out to be something she was good at. |
Kaira had just spotted the Headmaster standing there. Oh, her bad!! 'Good morning Headmaster Trent!,' she wished him in a cheerful tone. Quote:

Ronan didn't feel so good. After....................... that thing, at the feast, with the thing, and the thing and He STILL didn't know what had happened to him and he definitely wasn't going to talk to HE WHO DOES NOT EXIST about it so he'd spent this morning madly dashing from his bed to the bathroom, trying to get ready in the unfamiliar space of his dorm while actively avoiding every single on of his dormmates (especially the one that does not exist mmhm), then wolfing down bread and butter at breakfast as if he hadn't seen food since 2093 and ignoring his yearmates AND housemates. And now.... DADA. Ronan had been pretty excited for classes, so he was rather dismayed when he was about to follow some tall guy in when he realised he'd FORGOTTEN HIS WAND. More mad dashing ensued, bumping into people and asking several for directions back to the Hufflepuff common room - good thing he was a medal winning sprinter, right? - and held his apple wand tightly in his hand as he ran back to the classroom, considerably more full now than before. ............... Uh. Except it wasn't a classroom?? "Good mo-.. uhm, Headmaster," Ronan greeted Trent just like everyone else did, though he was very confused about what was happening. So confused, in fact, that he forgot to be mopey and embarrassed about He Who Does Not Exist. He held his wand out at the general darkness, clutching it tightly in both his arms, shoulders hunched and eyes squinting. Ronan Wallace was READY. |
First class of the term and it was the headmaster’s. Defense Against the Dark Arts wasn’t exactly his forte but Septimus would like to think he wasn’t totally terrible at it. One could only wait and see if that was both the truth and if so, continue into the new year. Properly dressed and relatively well rested for the day after the opening feast, the fourth year made his way to the appropriate classroom on the first floor, his book bag slung over his shoulder and his wand securely in his pocket. Except the classroom wasn’t a classroom, inside anyway. One of those days it seemed. The wonder of magic from the wands of the various professors made classroom learning less monotonous. It would be interesting to see just what would develop along the way today. “Good morning, Headmaster,” he greeted the man as he passed to get further inside the transformed room. |
Malachi walks into his first class and looks around honestly excited. He can’t wait for the class to start. |
For once in his life, Maxton Carden had woken up bright and early. Not by choice though. He'd gotten up, threw his uniform on in record time and snuck out of the dormitory in the hopes of avoiding a certain dorm mate. Last night's feast and its aftermath were still kind of a blur, but he remembered ENOUGH. Too much. He'd even skipped breakfast. He was hoping for a niiiiiiice, chill lesson to start off the term. One where they'd just be reading and copying from the textbook or something. No such luck though, apparently, and Max frowned when he stepped into...... the opposite of the standard classroom. What the---? Rubbing his empty stomach to try and stop the growling, the seventh year sent a silent nod in the direction of the new Headmaster on his way past and then found himself a quiet spot to stand. And wait. |
Patrick walked into the classroom. He had gone back and forth and back and forth about what sensibly meant. Did that mean he could show up in his jeans and dress shirt? cause if it was he'd gladly ditch the uniform from here on out. Since he knew he had a Potions lesson later he wore the uniform but had his robe around his bag. He did not need to trip over it. Just as he got through the door he noticed that the room did not look to be day time... wait wasn't this class at 8 am. Did he over sleep? Did he miss his whole entire first day of classes? Checking his muggle watch he noticed that he was in fact early to class and okay for the day. He looked around deciding where he was going to sit, "Morning Headmaster." he stated clearly before taking up a spot off to the side of the room. |
First day of lessons....and Aaron was be-bopping into the Defense classroom with a huge smile on his face. He'd had the BEST summer of his life, and being back at school did nothing to diminish that. He felt lighter somehow. More hopeful. Less nervous. Not even the dreams could harsh his mellow. ...Nor this spooky room decor...? OooOoOOoOO! "Headmaster!" He was joyful, despite the room, as he greeted their new commander-in-chief. Aaron had a good feeling about the man, and his intuition was rarely wrong in these instances. Whilst he stood there, debating the adventure they were obviously about to embark on...he considered lighting his wand. The adult had a lantern. Could he have one, too? |
Bettie ready as she is ever going to be headed to her first class of the new school year. Upon walking into classroom 104 for her first DADA class she found herself walking into a dark bog with a slightly cloudy night and headmaster Trent was not to far from the door holding a lantern. Bettie passed the headmaster with a “good morning headmaster” and polite nod before finding a spot to stand. |
SLEEP WAS FOR THE WEAK. That was Jó had said last night, but now he was feeling a different sort of way. And that way was tired-but-I'm-not-going-to-admit-that and he was definitely trying not to show it. Because, of course, sleep was for the weak. And Józef Kowalski was not weak. He'd almost forgotten about Lucas' weIRD behaviour at the feast. Almost. And as he entered the classroom, excited and intrigued by the eeriness, he pushed the thoughts completely away. This had to be something exciting. "Morning!" he whispered, adopting a spooky voice, as he entered and grinned at the knew headmaster. |
Normally, Gunnar would be up bright and early before classes began to start off his day with his morning run. But not today. Not when he had apparently been up half the night writing a love letter to Jolie Chosen because of what he could only guess were the effects of a potent love potion somehow slipped to him during the feast. And he had been mortified when he woke up and slowly began to realize how he had acted the night before. Had anyone seen him? Besides the obvious, of course. The fourteen year old had already done a pretty good job of avoiding Jolie this morning, but he wasn't sure how long that would last considering that they shared a common room. And he wondered who else might have caught sight of his declarations of devoted love to his housemate, but it was enough to make him want to skip classes and stay in his dorm. But at the last possible moment, Gunnar decided he couldn't start off the term that way and so he made his way to class, barely on time with his eyes averted to the floor. He half wondered if Alessandro still went running without him, but he quickly pushed that thought from his mind as he turned in to the classroom. The fourth year gave a nod in greeting to the Headmaster, still having the routine of not speaking until spoken to in class still etched into his brain. Yes, he knew it was a new administration, but he remained unsure and was so used to hearing the rules being broadcast on the hour for like, nine months. And he didn't have to worry about standing by a desk, waiting to be told when to sit, because there were no desks. But he found a spot in the back to stand. |
First lesson of the term, after a rather strange first night back. It was certainly rather odd to see everyone act so strange last night at the feast trying to snog one another, particularly her mates; whom some of which were in relationships. Come to hear through word of mouth, someone appeared to have pulled a prank on the school causing them to act in such strange ways. From the looks of it this morning however, people seemed to be back to normal, or at least she thought... NEVERTHELESS, DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK- Oh......alright..interesting set up to the classroom. Vivian took a quick glance around the interesting set up of the classroom and the students standing around waiting for the lesson to begin. Her eyes carrying over towards the Headmaster before giving an optimistic greeting, "Good morning, sir!" She smiled brightly before taking a stand beside her friend Gunnar, giving him a light nudge. |
Hiya Jo As was to be expected considering last night's horror show Maxie was doing his best to melt into the background. He'd considered pulling up his head on the way over but decided against it - if anything that was an attention grabber. He needed to be boring, not mysterious. Slightly flushed, the Hufflepuff, nodded at an open space behind someone he didn't make eye contact with (It was, unbeknown to the boy, his enemy Josef Kowalski) before taking up said space and staring at his favored Chalk White Adidas Yung 1's. Okay, so, everyone was saying hello to the Headmaster- he supposed that meant he was supposed to too. Right- TOTALLY NORMAL BORING BOY HELLO COMING UP. "G-Good morning, H-headmaster." Excellent, totally boring and normal. Totally adequate and lackluster. Maxie swallowed audibly, tucking his clenched fists into his trouser pockets. He had this, he absolutely had this. |
Abra had a love-hate relationship with Defence Against the Dark Arts. Or... maybe a like-hate relationship. He liked it, and it hated him. Essentially. But he was here, okay? He was HERE. Nervous and jittery and all sorts of keyboard-smash about the whole needing to get used to another new professor who probably wasn't used to his general disposition, but he was here. This should, at any rate, be better for his nerves than the previous year had been. THAT had been stress. Stress on legs. Actually. Dressed as sensibly as he had deemed might be appropriate, Abra entered the classroom and... stopped. It had been day, and now it was night. Dark. Hmm. Don't like that. But he moved further into the classroom anyway, albeit a little bit warily and one hand on the handle of his wand. This was one class where they could spring anything on you at any moment and claim it was part of the curriculum or something, so he was certainly... ready. Or on edge. Listen, it was the same thing. .............. Oh. OH. Right. Yes. Of course. Abra quickly turned back to look at the professor standing near the door, lit up by the lantern he was holding. "Good mor-... uh... eve-... uhhhh..." Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...? "... Hello... Headmaster." Okay, first class back, lesson not even started yet, and Abra was already confused. Excellent start. |
Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no. Lucas felt TERRIBLE. He walked down the corridor, not...... really paying attention to where he was going. His feet was guiding him but his brain was thinking about everything that had happened with a very glum look on his face. Why did he keep touching his hair? And giving him cuddles? And why oh why oh why did he confess his love to JÓZEF KOWALSKI?! Did he love him? NO. Not like THAT. They were friends! Good friends! And the worst part? The truly WORST part? He woke up remembering everything and there he was: Józef. On a bad near his!! How was he ever going to show his face again??? Lucas physically facepalmed, as if this would help him forget everything. Was there a way he COULD forget the feast? He didn’t know. And he wasn’t going to bother looking. Maybe he’d talk to Emma because she would understand. And avoid Jó for the rest of his time at Hogwarts. Yeah....... yeah, that might work. Reaching the Defence classroom, the second year entered and- ......... UH. It was dark? Nighttime? But wasn’t it first thing in the morning? Confused, he looked behind him and at the closest window, and then back at the inside of the classroom. This was the right room. He was sure of it. Even the Headmaster was in here. Who, by the way, got a nervous look from the second year as he said very quietly, "Hello, Headmaster." Shuffling inside, Lucas glanced around, maybe even squinted slightly, before moving to an empty spot. A spot that happened to be as FAR away from a certain Gryffindor boy as he could get. And no, he wasn’t turning red from embarrassment. It was just...... hot in here. |
~ iGoRRR To say Harri was excited was an understatement. She had the MOST enjoyable sleep ever next to her lovely toad, got up early (she hates getting up early) with a grin on her face as she greeted her pretty dorm mates, and was literally bouncing on the balls of her feet as she bounded over to the very first lesson of the term (her VERY FIRST lesson EVER!) and it was Defense Against the Dark Arts. It was a bright, sunny morning too...except it wasn't, when she got inside classroom 104. ooOoooHHHhhhHHH. It was actually the opposite of the outside and the eleven year old looked around in amazement, blue eyes bright. "Morning, Headmaster!" Because it was morning even though it was dark, she wasn't easily discombobulated, at least not yet. Without any desks around, she wiggled her way into the middle and ended next to a familiar face. "Oh Igor, morning. Quite a fun feast, was it?" Harri offered in greeting as she reached to pat his head. Still taller! HA! The young Gryffindor also spied her dorm mates (Isla and Cordelia) and waved jovially at them. |
Alessandro Toussaint rather abhorred the opening feast. He had endured three years of unappetising, endless opening feasts, but none had quite been as terrible as last night. And he still counted the opening feast his first year, when he was sorted into Hufflepuff, to be among the worst days of his life. He apologised to Kodee at breakfast, though, so he hoped the whole table incident would soon be a thing of the past. Doubtful, if he knew Kodee Chosen. Brushing aside all jaw and nose injuries, which was easy as he was not the afflicted party, Alessandro walked into the DADA classroom and was suddenly drenched in night. He spotted the Headmaster with a lantern and he nodded politely at the older man before joining the crowd of his peers. |
Matthew was more excited about his first lesson than he cared to admit. He tried to hide his new found enthusiasm as he entered into the classroom. As soon as he stepped in he sensed the...difference? He quickly noticed the lack of desks. He shrugged his shoulders, guessing it was just a part of the class. But there was something else, Matthew couldn't put his finger on it. Quickly he scanned the room, seeing several other students that he had seen at the Feast and in the corridors. He was looking for the ones he remembered names of, like Bel. Surely Bel was here. |
No chairs, no desks, no seating at all... Chloe took in the whole room in a single glance as she entered. Lots of students already, but the lack of traditional classroom accoutrements was clearly making them uncomfortable. Or maybe it was the creepy weather patterns the professor had magicked in. Not the professor. Headmaster. "Good evening, Headmaster. Interesting aesthetic you have going here." |
Mark normally enjoyed Defense Against the Dark Arts. But after the events of the Feast well. This was going to be very awkward to go to the Class after declaring his intention to follow a man he only just meant into the Darkness. He had pulled the hood of his robe over his head and made sure it obscured his face as best it could as he hurried into the Class...which was Dark and...boggish...Oh no. He was literally going into the darkness for this guy... "Hello, Sir." Marked muffled and deepened his voice as best he could for a twelve year old who was still a year or months from puberty. Passing the Headmaster was not to far from the door with a Lantern. He slouched and continued to hurry into the class and prepare to keep a low profile through out the whole of the class. He wasn't here, He wasn't here, don't notice him. But also...he was here please make sure you note his presence for class participation. Thank you, please don't acknowledge him..but do. |
Well this was... dark. Bel looked around with curiosity and a tiny slither of apprehension at the not-a-classroom. Not the unsafe kind though, because she wasn't so worried about the class being unsafe (since she was inclined to trust professors and obviously a Headmaster should be the most trusty of professors), but more apprehensive about if she would be able to actually..... be any use in here. Do stuff. Spell stuff. For a sixth year she was definitely not up to par with her spellwork. It just wasn't her strength no matter how hard she worked at it. She had only got a P on her NEWTs but had special permission to continue trying to work at things, given the whole experience the term before last with the Inferi and all, it was clear that certain skills were necessary and quitting wasn't the best way to gain those just-in-case skills. Oh crap! Had she brought her-- Bel patted herself down and relief came over her face. Yes, she had her wand. Of all classes to potentially forget it... but no matter. She had it. She looked around the boggy space a little more, her eyes being drawn finally to the headmaster and his lantern, which was all reminding her quite strongly of one of the illustrations in the textbooks she'd been pouring over to try and make up for her lack when it came to the practical stuff. "G'day sir, you look like a hinkypunk, you aren't gonna lead us astray are ya?" |
All the nerves, all the anxiety, all the excitement? Dead. Buried. He woke up way earlier than he was used to after failing to take his own advice. Spent the night awake telling his wife about the CRAZY first night--which he'd by now deduced was a result of a potion and needed to have a talk with Noble about a lecture on potions ethics for the kiddos. One thing at a time, but after last night he'd admit it'd moved further up the to-do list. Right now he needed coffee, and another hour wrapped in blankets--or Mavis. His daughter had a knack for waking him up in the sort of way that made it damn near impossible to fall back asleep. Malachi yawned freely, one hand in his pocket while the other held the lantern. The students would be arriving soon. Getting into the lesson would wake him up but standing here in this swampy area in the dark, it was all but bedtime at 8 am. SPOILER!!: Answers in her Malachi looked once again to his watch. Only a few minutes left til they could get this show on the road. He looked to those already present. "Watch your step and where you stand while we wait for the others to arrive. I'm afraid when I cast the charm, my wand added it's own little additions." Creepy crawlies along the floor. Overly muddy areas that would make shoes awful messy. He wasn't sure what else. He probably should have checked to find out what else. Nothing they couldn't handle he was sure! Nothing dangerous at least, so not a tremendous concern for him. "We'll begin in another couple minutes." OOC: Class will officially begin in about 3 hours, you can definitely still post your arrivals ^^ |
Awkwardness? Don't know her. After the potion had worn off, she had just laughed the whole feast off in true Archer fashion. Which meant that instead of avoiding certain people and all that mess like others, she entered the class positively cheery. "Good morning, Headmaster! Great feast last night," she greeted with an amused tone. She was amused, seeing all the awkwardness going around the room. Whoever had pulled that off deserved a round of applause. Truly a great prank. "Might not want the lights off, though...." 'Cause...you know. Come to think of it, why were the lights all off? And why did it smell, feel and look like she had just stepped into a Louisiana swamp? Oh no, there weren't ALLIGATORS or CROCODILES in here, were there? Because, if there were, count Archer out. No way was she going into a swamp full of those things! |
His first night as Head Boy had been a complete disaster. Honestly, he was expecting Professor Noble to call him into his office and strip him of his badge. Even with circumstances being out of his control - Dora had told him the food and drink in the Great Hall could be trusted! - the Hufflepuff was in a low. A real BAD low and not even his morning Sighing as he entered the classroom, Derf had another moment of 'oh dragon dung, I messed up again!' seeing the setting. Night time. Which meant he was late. Outside when he was meant to report to classroom....no wait. Blinking a few paces in to the entryway, he took those step back and walked his way out to double check that he had not entered some Upside Down Hogwarts or something. Hey, it had been a long couple of years at Hogwarts, you know? But no, the number was clearly there and nothing seemed OFF per say. Being thrown by this class being taught by the Headmaster was the least of his worries - save for, you know, badge stripping based on last night. Though thankfully his confusion over the setting had made him forget about all that. As did the headmaster's words about watching his step. So this WAS real life. Charms though, yes, of course. Relief washing entirely over him, Derf entered the room proper and took great pleasure in the sound of enchanted mud squishing underneath his shoes. "Good day, headmaster," he greeted without a hint of anxiety now as he made his way over to stand by Chloe. "Hey," he grinned. Well....no anxiety until he caught Zoryn out of the corner of his eye. Then his ears turned red and his gaze went to the ground. |
Oh... no... This can't be happening! She can't be late on her first day back! Running towards the Defense against Dark Arts classroom as fast as her little legs would carry her. She wasn't going to be late for one of her favorite classes, that wasn't happening! Running through the crowd of students saying 'excuse me, sorry late for class!' Her robe flying around her she came towards the Defense against the Dark Arts classroom bresthing hard. Whew... she made it and they haven't started yet, that was a good thing as she walked towards the Headmaster. "Good Morning sir, I'm sorry if I'm late." She felt horrible, she had a really bad headache and she woke up well... that was a bit of a secret between two best friends. Biting her lip she pushed that in the back of her mind, she'll worry about that later, now she had to focus on her what Headmaster Trent had for them. |
SPOILER!!: replies Aaaaand it was time. With a flick of his wand, the door to the defense classroom swung shut. At this point, it essentially disappeared, being disillusioned like it was. All around them, running in every direction, the bog stretched. It could easily have been mistaken for miles and miles of swamp like land. "Gather round, gather round." He waited a moment for the ones further away to move closer. "Right then, first lesson you'll learn here, late students will not be permitted into the classroom. You've all found yourself on the right side of the door and it would do you well to keep finding yourself on the right side of it." At current, the door was sealed shut magically. It wouldn't open until it needed to be. "Nothing any of you need to concern yourself with today." No, they were present and accounted for. With the door closed, the lantern in his hand was essentially the only light source. The cloud settling over the moon hadn't moved an inch. It would be doing them no favours "I'd like everyone to take a look around." It was obvious they weren't in a classroom at the moment, yes, but had they been taking any real note of their surroundings? How many of them considered the setting and were already actively thinking about the lesson's possibilities? Coming in and chatting with friends was alright (when kept in check), but surely it could wait. This was time for learning. "Tell me an issue or outright danger you can run into while travelling through this sort of terrain, especially but not limited to it being nighttime." Basically, what could go wrong? OOC: The class has officially begun! At this point, if you post your character arriving they will be punished. More to the point, the door is sealed shut so they wouldn't be able to get in. If you missed the arrivals, that's fine! Jump in and pretend your charrie was there the whole time. I'll be moving the class along in about 26 - 28 hours from the point of this post. |
Caolan hadn’t wanted to make a bad impression but was amusing the Headmaster with his confusion really the direction he wanted to go in? He nodded at his response and stood out the way in what should have been a corner whilst he waited for the lesson to progress. He moved forward when the Headmaster beckoned them but remained on the outside still. The problem with this school was that Caolan wasn’t sure how literal he should go with his answers. In his head the dangers were pretty obvious but were they too muggle-ly for this class? Y’know, tripping over and all that.. He also didn’t want to be the first one to answer, those over eager students tended to be bullied back where he was from and as the ‘new kid’ in this school he really didn’t want to make a bad impression. He tentatively raised his hand. That was what they did here right? Or were they just the shout the answers out sort of place because that could get messy really fast. He hoped that someone else would get there first but it seemed like that was not the case. “You can’t really tell where you’re treading so anything could be on the floor waiting for you to trip over it or step into.” Health and safety and all that. Was that too obvious though? “And it being all boggy here you could probably sink if you weren’t careful” he continued. That wasn’t just limited to the time of day it was either. Caolan had memories of getting stuck in a bog once when out with his father. It really wasn’t fun. |
The door shutting hadn’t startled Stasya any more than usual, although the disappearance of the same had made the Gryffindor narrow her eyes slightly. Apparently there wasn’t going to be an easy escape, but at least her eyes had adjusted in the darkness to even notice things like that, along with the fact it seemed the headmaster had only chosen to refer to Chloe and Derf by name. Under normal circumstances, she’d be concerned about that, but so far he hadn’t seemed dangerous (aka anything like the professors last term) Maybe he just wasn’t the type to remember names, but then he’d disillusioned the door so maybe it wasn’t that. “Like Bel had mentioned earlier, there’s a chance of creatures like hinkypunks living in the bog and leading people astray. Possibly dugbogs too, if it’s particularly marshy. Plus, it’s possible to just get lost on your own if you don’t know where you are or if the ground is solid beneath you,” she responded, having moved closer to the lantern but not close enough to bother her adjusted eyesight. Constant vigilance applied to everything after all. |
Daisy looked at her surroundings, thinking about her answer. Soon, she raised her hand, having remembered something that she had read about during her Third Year. "I think Hinkypunks would be a danger. If I remember correctly, they lure people into bogs," |
Oh hello Vita. He smiled at the girl and was about to attempt at some mindless small talk - when the headmaster spoke up. To which, he found his mind racing with possibilities. Because every single thing could go wrong. Your heart can stop, your wand can get lost, you can trip and break your neck. There was no one thing. So very politely he asked, "can you be more specific, headmaster? because from a magical creature attacking us to a muggle stabbing us - everything can go wrong" |
It was? Interesting? Bel tipped her head to one side, entirely curious about why her comment was interesting. Did that mean they were gonna learn about hinkypunks? That could be cool. She looked at Stas when she reiterated that and decided it would be dumb to repeat the same thing all things concerned, and so Bel stuck her hand up, "Blisters, professor." Should she elaborate? "Proper footwear so you don't get blisters is pretty important, or if something goes wrong you could get stuck or not be able to run away." Yeah so... watch out for that? If you were about to go hiking or adventuring or anything. |
Well this was different. It was dark. That lantern the Headmaster was holding didn't do a great deal of good if you weren't one of the few standing right beside the man. Which she wasn't. She was still beside Isla and that was just fine by her. What could go wrong? Uhhh... how about everything? Or nothing at all. It really was all a matter of how one looked at situations like this. Things going wrong could be a very good learning experience, you learned what to do and what not to do. Like.. don't try to cross the swamp in that one corridor because you might come very close to losing a prized possession. You live and you learn. Taking as good a look around as she could now that her eyes had adjusted to the darkness a bit more there was a lot that could happen. Rylee raised her hand before answering the question, not that she was sure she was seen doing so. "A lot could happen in the darkness if you don't know where you are." They could get lost, trip/fall and hurt themselves or get attacked by any number of creatures or even a person. "You could get attacked by a Gytrash. They hunt during the night and blend into the darkness." Meaning if you didn't have a really strong source of light you could be in for a very big problem. |
When Indigo joined her, Vita returned his smile and gave him a gentle nudge. She'd wanted to ask him about the feast, how it'd gone for him considering the craziness, but she'd catch him after class just in case he was one of ones who'd had a less than ideal experience. Did the headmaster know that there were so many things that could go wrong when wandering in a place like this at night? From creatures to terrain to human error, she could think of any number of scenarios that could mean the end. "It'd be easy to lose your head and your way in a place like this, particularly if you're aware of the type of creatures that might be lurking inside. You might be so caught up watching for signs of movement that you lose track of which way you're going, or so distracted by watching your step, you don't notice the creature lying in wait." |
Sorry about the tangent haha After everything that had happened since his first year at Hogwarts, Ewan wasn’t sure how he felt about the door being magically sealed so they couldn’t leave. What if something happened and they were all stuck in here? Forever? It Would be like they were stuck on an island and say what you will, but he was not up for becoming best friends with a ball like that man did on the muggle movie (Cast Away). Giving his head a small shake, he put all thoughts about naming his Quaffle Wilson and focused on the question at hand. Looking around now, Ewan analysed his surroundings briefly considering the role that the bog would play and also the fact that it’s night time too. After holding his hand up patiently to be called upon, he answered “Professor, the night time could impair your vision slightly which could lead you off your original path into the bog. Not to mention all of the creatures that could be around”. Pausing for a second to look around, he continued “Don’t Hinkypunks tend to live in bogs or wetlands? So that could possibly be a danger”. He was sure there were other creatures that could be dangerous here but this one seemed the obvious choice at least. |
After greeting the Headmaster, Torii decided to keep her focus on the room around her. Room...bog...whatever it was. In the front of her mind, though, she kept thinking about what could be hidden in here. This was Defense Against the Dark Arts class, so the likelihood that nothing was lurking in here was slim to none. She was so focused on her line of thinking that she actually jumped a little when the door slammed shut. Nobody had...noticed that, had they? Speaking of noticing things, just where was the door? Torii was so new to the school and so bitter about the move that she hadn't developed a trust for anybody just yet. She wanted to believe they were okay, though, but...wasn't this the school with all the Inferi? Ughh. So anyway, back to the room. The really dark room. Torii edged closer to the lantern and felt for her wand. She'd light it, but nobody was, and sometimes light didn't do any good in the darkness. Sometimes it just showed the predator its prey. She looked around, considering the answer to the Headmaster's question. Some kid spoke up and said that everything could go wrong, and Torii agreed. She raised her hand, unsure if the Headmaster could even tell in a setting like this. "So I was just thinking about how darkness can be both good and bad. I mean, on one hand, we can't see where we're going or what's out there," she said. "On the other hand, though, if we shine light from our wands, we're basically showing a predator its prey." Then there were other things to think about, like creatures who sensed fear and things like that. |
Tessa wasn't really sure what to make of Professor/Headmaster Trent yet. He seemed chill.....but maybe too chill? But, after last year, maybe that was exactly what they needed. And it's not like they could complain. Anything would be better than last year. Had anyone mentioned the cold yet? No? Well, she was going to. "It would be really cold at night time, probably, and dark, so you wouldn't want to get lost. It's not just Hinkypunks that could be a danger....the environment itself can be dangerous. If you got lost, and if you only had a certain amount of food, well, you would need more energy to get.....unlost. Hot-Air charms are great and all but they require concentration, and what if something attacked you while you were warming up?" Yeah. That was some out-of-the-box thinking right there. Confident start but she had kinda trailed into nothingness in the middle. Ah well. She might have managed to bring it back at the end. |
Now that Skyler took a breath after realising that she wouldn't get points doct by talking, she scanned the room, she saw that it was dark, very dark. Okay. She wondered if they were going to be learning about wearwolves? Probably not, too many first years in here. "You could end up with a broken neck if you trip over something in the boggy water, even if you could see," Skyler mentioned. |
Mary was surprised by the sudden change in environment. The corridor was no longer visible and neither was the light from it. She took a good look around before turning to the headmaster. The teacher asked a question and people started answering. Mary thought about it. Her DADA textbook was not one she had skimmed through before coming here. She didn't want anything to muggle-ish, but knew very little about the wizarding world compared to most students. Stepping closer to the teacher, as she knew she spoke very quietly, she finally decided on responding, "If you're not careful, it's very easy to trip or get stuck here. Especially during the night, as it is hard to see where you are going. If you do get stuck, this would be a good chance for someone our something to get you, because you would then be unable to to escape." |
Ryleee Standing close to her older cousin, ”I tried my best to sleep. I don’t want to be late for class. They ruined pumpkin juice for me.” Whoever those pranksters were...she wished karma would get them back in time. Last night fiasco wasn’t very niceeee. Thanks to them, she had stayed away from pumpkin juice this morning... atleast from the time being. Isla would hate to lose a friend because of some boy she didn’t even like. She didn’t even know if she like boys yet! Returning back to the professor’s question, she listened to the others answers with great interest. She wondered what Hinkypunks were? The name sounded so cool in her ears. Isla raised her hand. ”You might be stuck for hours? Oh and you still have to watch out for potential wild predators like wolves or coyotes. They like to forage near the bogs for an easy meal.” Of course she was familiar with the topic. She has been living in Scotland all her life, there will always be rough terrains, wet mossy grounds and man-eating bogs around. She had learn to stay clear of them at a very young age. |
Zoryn gave Cameron a poke in the side. So their plan had some minor setbacks. But as a whole, Zoryn thought it had been pretty well executed. Well, aside from that part where Derf literally licked her face. But she had chosen to block that out. Never happened. N O P E. “Hey, Cameroni,” why did he look like he hadn’t slept a wink? He should be grinning from ear to ear. THEY HAD A LEGACY NOW. Zoryn, however, was not able to voice these thoughts as their Headmaster began to address the lot of them. The Gryffindor listened to the question, a stupid one in her opinion, and found herself in agreement with pretty-face Zachary. “Ruining a good pair of shoes,” was her answer when it came to her turn to speak. Like, did he see the mud in here? It was a disaster. Thank u, next!!!!!! Couldn’t they have a lesson somewhere less squishy? She didn’t want to deal with sludge today, having to be in the same classroom as Anna Meriwether was enough to disgust her, as it was. |
Quote:
Malachi looks around before raising his hand and answering with slight hesitancy. "Anything could be dangerous in an unknown place, poisonous plants, pit falls, weather and animals. Sometimes even other people depending on how long your here, exspecially without food and clean water..." |
Al had taken in his surroundings the moment he was swathed in darkness. He noted the exits, where all of his classmates were concentrated and the magical environment beyond them. It never hurt to be observant, especially when it was dark outside. The dangers of darkness were apparent. If you can’t see, you can’t properly anticipate and protect yourself. His peers seemed to, at the very least, understand the danger part of the classroom, which was shocking as a good group of them were careless enough to down love potion only hours before. Selectively careful, then, he decided. He didn’t raise his hand or answer. He listened and watched. |
While he was waiting for the lesson to begin Indigo was already looking around the, er... classroom. He was thinking of plenty of things that could go wrong. From creatures to getting lost. His anxiety had already been fairly high from the moment he'd woken up and this was not helping matters at all. He knew that what he really needed to do was focus, because then he'd be able to handle whatever was going to happen in this lesson, but that was not going well for him right now. This lesson may be interesting. Indigo listened to the answers given by his classmates. He didn't want to repeat one, or say something too similar to an answer that was already given. Plenty of people mentioned the danger of being in the dark, and Vita mentioned the risk of getting lost that had been on his mind. Indigo raised his hand. "In addition to larger creatures that might be lurking in the darkness, there's plenty of little bugs too. Those might go unnoticed but they could still leave a nasty bite." He wasn't sure exactly what sorts of bugs there could be but they could be carriers of diseases. Or someone could be allergic. |
Charlie jumped as the door slammed shut, thankful that it was dark enough that it probably was not noticed. She wasn't sure the darkness was worth it, though, seeing as all sorts of scary things could pop up or happen in it: monsters, large branches to trip on, pits or pools of unknown materials to fall into, et cetera. Surely Headmaster Trent wouldn't allow (or was not allowed to) any harm to come to his students, though... right? As human nature had arranged for, Charlie scooted in along with the others towards the light of the headmaster's lantern. However scary a dark, unknown place is, it was most certainly better than being late to class and facing the wrath of a professor, so he needn't tell her twice (perhaps other students needed the nudge, though). She wanted to give a good and thoughtful answer, but she had very limited knowledge on wizarding things. Charlie grew anxious as she listened to her classmates give their responses, feeling horribly inferior. Hinklypunks? Dundermifflins? Hot air curses?! She would just have to put her best foot forward anyhow. "Well, sir, I'd say that sight -- because there's no light and all -- is the biggest issue...," she gulped, itching her forearm as an odd means to release stress (or maybe she was just abnormally itchy...). "If you can't see, you can't see branches that you might trip on, quicksand or mud puddles that could make your clothes dirty, or monsters." Yes... monsters. That was safe terminology to use. |
Penny stood on the edge of the group, unnoticed... Just the way she preferred, really. After her eyes had adjusted to the darkness somewhat, she sidled up beside the nearest student and turned her focus to the Professor... Headmaster... whatever. Her brain immediately went to Hinkypunks, but of course others had mentioned them and yeah yeah. Penny was more into not drawing attention to herself, so for now she kept quiet and made mental notes. Of course the terrain would be dangerous in the dark. Not knowing where you are stepping or what may be lurking in the darkness ready to pull you away. Like a Hinkypunk... ya know? But her brain moved to the next logical question... but she'd wait for class to progress before she asked about light. Because... ya know... he was probably getting there. So for now the Hufflepuff let her eyes take in everything that she could see and continued to make those mental notes as classmates answered. |
Was one normal lesson too much to ask? A lesson without danger, specifically. Please. Max shimmied closer to whichever poor soul had the bad luck of standing next to him. Sure, he had his wand and could cast a pretty decent shield charm but human shields were good too you know. Just saaaaying. "Trees." Yep, that's all he said after having raised his arm in the air. The Headmaster had specifically said 'run into' and well.... you could accidentally run into a tree, so... |
So much for waking up early. It was a good thing Anna had indeed had a good night's sleep, otherwise that lesson wouldn't have been very productive. BUT first lesson of the year, that was alright, she was awake. The dangers of being in a place like that, though? Lots of creatures had been mentioned, as well as natural things like blisters and tripping - trees?? And someone even said something about a broken neck!??? What in the world - and all that jazz, so Anna chose to look around to see what was what in that location. She couldn't decide if she'd be more worried about encountering an animal or a person were she ever alone in a place like that. "Werewolves." The Gryffindor said almost absentmindedly. Although the moon wasn't exactly visible, Anna knew it was there aaaand that reminded her of werewolves. Thanks to both Muggle and Wizard fairytales. And actuality as well, of course. BESIDES, that case it would almost be the combination of both animal and person. Though... the person behind the werewolf wouldn't really be aware of anything and could perhaps be a good person after all, but that would make no difference if they were transformed. Anyhow, no matter what she could encounter, she'd be a lot safer if she had her broom, that was for sure. Shame that wasn't the point of this lesson. |
Mariam had stood in the back, unsure of the whole... surroundings situation. Then again, she wasn't sure about anything from the get-go, the unfortunate train ride to boggy first lesson to the fact that they weren't technically required to bring a textbook. Granted, she didn't hate practical lessons, there were just some subjects she enjoyed more than others when it came to them. BUT, having the sense that this wasn't something that could be sat out, she might as well try and join in. Have a bit of "fun" or educational experience while the theoretical was still in play. It was just coming up with an answer that someone else hadn't already mentioned. Duly noted not to wait until almost everyone had already voiced their thoughts. "Anxiety... or panicking," she raised her hand, having to clear her throat after the initial squeak that came out after the first word. Face was indeed slowly turning red. "Losing your head, for whatever reason that may be such as a fear of darkness, isn't wise... in such a terrain." 'Cause of those hinkypunks everyone else mentioned, and everything else. |
Before she could ask Gunnar a question, she heard the door slam shut due to the Headmaster's will quickly figuring out that the lesson had begun. Her hazel green eyes immediately on him now with her undivided attention as he addressed the classroom. She took a glance around the darkness about them as he asked what dangers one might encounter in this type of situation. Taking a moment to assess as she had never been in any type of area like this before, but having read something like it in a book her father had to read to her about once. The fourth year would be seen raising her hand up in the air, "Well I imagine the area itself is dangerous alone sir, uneven terrain that could cause one to trip and hurt themselves pretty bad on say a jagged rock..Or there's the potential of walking into a really soggy area of water unexpectedly that could swallow you up..Unknown figures like spirits that could make you feel as if you were being haunted..And not to mention the risk of running into night creatures waiting for it's next meal.." Right? |
What could go wrong? Well. The headmaster was asking the self proclaimed conspiracy theorist of Hogwarts with that one. From the various creatures that lived in these sorts of conditions to a sudden torrential downpour, there were literally endless possibilities as to what could go wrong. Though Derf had to admit that the headmaster holding his lantern gave off a very vivid image of a hinkypunk, as Bel had pointed out earlier and was likely why many seemed stuck on that answer. There were also kappas to consider in these conditions, which was the second creature to pop into Derf's mind as he looked around. Though, if he was being honest, his true distraction was in the way that his feet were sinking into the mud. So he took a moment to tug and pull his feet free. Maybe he ought to step in place a bit to try and keep himself from sinking? "Given visibility and the terrain like some have mentioned..." the 17-year-old began upon raising his hand. "....I reckon the risk of losing items is pretty high. Like...if you don't perform a Gripping Charm on your wand hand, well, you could drop is and it will just get suck in the mud somewhere you can't see it. Which would then make you pretty defenseless against all those creatures that others brought up too." And, well, to tack on to Zoryn's bit about ruining shoes...Derf's shoe popped right off when he moved to tug his other leg free from the mud. So, well, there was a visual aid to his answer? |
SPOILER!!: The Great Headmaster Trent Still continuing to try faking his voice Mark just nodded at him and said "Uh yeah. Stranger Sir. I didn't say anything to about anything that happened the night before I had no control over." OH AH!! That just made it worse he was sure of it. The second year Ravenclaw took a few more steps behind a couple other students and felt his foot sink just a bit into a muddy patch in the floor or uh...ground pulling his foot up the bottom of his shoe now ruined. Just as the Headmaster warned them of little additions. SPOILER!!: He's so Amazing you gotta have twice in a Reply |
So this new Headmaster had some rules of his own? Lucas tilted his head as the man talked. The rule didn't sound bad and was something that was normal for professors: don't be late to class. Simple. It didn't sound bad at all. But he couldn't help but wonder what the man had against late-comers. And if he knew that it now felt as if they were locked inside, in a room that looked....... well. To make things worse, they were talking about dangers already. Frowning slightly, he looked around at the area as other students talked, even squinting a little to get some kind of clue. There were a lot of things that the others were mentioning that clicked in his head as they said it: not seeing anything properly, hinkypunks, and someone even said that everything could go wrong? ......... UH. This was making him feel VERY uneasy. Still frowning, he slowly raised his hand up in the air and decided to say something that, he hoped, no one else had said. "Well, uh, you could get bitten." Pause. "I mean, you could be wandering around the bog, or just standing still, I guess, and then get bitten by a creature and..... it could be venomous. And if you're stuck in a bog..... thing on your own, I guess it might be hard to get help?" Owls didn't fly that quickly. "And it's not just creatures but plants too!" He nodded in what he hoped was a confident way. |
Being the nosy kid that he was, Józef was in the habit of looking at everyone who spoke, and so of course he didn't miss his WORST ENEMY EVER as he greeted the headmaster from the spot DIRECTLY BEHIND HIM. Max. Jó was going to watch you closely, kid. CLOSELY. And make sure no one mistook him for the weird annoying boy who definitely wasn't as cool as he was. After a moment of squinting and staring, the second year turned back around, making no effort to hide the scowl on his face. Not that the scowl lasted long, though, because Lucas had arrived and now it was time to wriggle his way through all of the people to stand next to him. Józef knew that he was embarrassed, but the events of last night were FAR too amusing, and he wasn't going to let his dormmate avoid him OR forget about it all. What were friends for?! He was about to speak, but quickly closed his mouth and turned back to the Headmaster when the door swung shut. He could tease Lucas later - for now, things seemed like they were about to get interesting as the room seemed to darken even further. Maybe that was his imagination, but he was totally on board with this new headmaster and his eerie lessons. Hand waved in the air until it was his turn to answer. "You could get SUPER stuck. You know, like CAN'T ESCAPE EVER stuck, where the bog drags you down under and you know, you started with just your feet stuck but then you're up to your armpits and after a while your head would go under!" Oh, and especially at night time? That was another part of the question! "And at night, there's less people about, so you'd be less likely to be rescued because no one would hear you scream and even if they did they couldn't see you!" Sounded like a pretty grim way to go, if you asked him. |
Okay, so, the disappearing door? Did not inspire a lot of confidence in Abra. He tried to focus on Headmaster Whatshisname, as it was pretty obvious the lesson was about to start, but kept glancing back towards where the door had been, as though he might will it back into existence. Unless it still did exist and was just... invisible. That thought made him feel slightly better, and, as he realised it was probably the most likely scenario, he decided to go with that. Uhhh... Uhhhhhhhhhh... Wait, what? Abra blinked, and looked around, and realised that everyone was already answering a question. Merlin. Another fantastic start; he'd missed it. But he could guess what it was. Hazards and stuff, about the situation they were currently in, maybe. Yeah, that'd do. Abra squinted towards the light, and therefore the professor, and raised his hand somewhat tentatively; after last year, he was a little nervous about opting to stay quiet. Maybe more than a little nervous. Maybe more nervous than he might be about giving a stupid answer, hence, having a go. "You could trip and fall..." Except that had obviously already been said, so... "... into a portal. A bog-portal. That takes you to another dimension. Where a monster is waiting because it wants to eat you." He nodded, a super serious expression on his dimly lit face. |
Igor was not expecting an answer so ominous so early that the lesson had not even begun. He took a deep gulp of nothing as he went to find somewhere to stand. Now wishing taller so that he couldnt get lost in bogs. Not pleasant thoughts at all. Or was this normal? He was only a first year so he didn't know. But better being her with someone he knows like Harri who was here know. Oh, the feast. that was something he was trying to forget... "Not really since I got pushed by Odaline...and thought her hair was pretty. Rather embarrassing first feast" Love potion and all still. Oh. Headmaster was talking....good thing he wasnt late or he wasnt getting in the door. He would have to remember that for next class. It was easy to get lost here. The more he thought on it the more answers where said and by the time he even got to direction, darkness, or things in the bog. Well those had already been said. Best keep quiet and listen. Well thats another one panicking, but that was said also. |
Patrick tried to think of all of the things that could go wrong in a bog. He supposed you could get stuck, have hidden creatures, not know where you are because your footsteps are gone. He hated the swamp lands back in the states it was always a terrifying experience. He heard everyone’s answers and agreed. “The hidden creatures is a big part. But I really think that you could get lost easier than anything and that creates a huge danger.” he continued to scratch down everyone else’s thoughts in a list. |
Josie looked up pausing in thought, Dangerous things in a bog?... Wasn't there plenty? She glanced around the room, hearing people talking about magical creatures for the most part, but her grandfather was from Georgia... and with that in mind, "If we were in the states, professor one could worry about alligators or crocodiles." The animals were kinda scary right? And they liked wet damp places like this. |
So far so good, the headmaster’s response to the greetings were all well and good. Septimus himself gaining a polite good morning in return of his own greeting. There wasn’t much familiarity but then the fourth year wasn’t expecting it, at least not outside the student leaders. It had to be hard to keep track of EVERYONe in the school on the first day. The Ravenclaw would settle not being on someone’s bad side out of the options. And safe…so he was following the man’s instructions as they all awaited the start of the lesson. Constant Vigilance…even without Hirsch. Soon enough Professor, um Headmaster Trent, was calling for their attention and proximity to begin and Septimus moved just a little closer to listen. The fourth near absently nodding in understanding of the tardiness rule. Yeah…no lateness for him if he could help it at all. He didn’t want to have to worry about the punishment for not being in the class. Not to mention missing what they were learning. For instance the first question of the day, his gaze flickering around their darkened surroundings. Bogs and getting lost, hinkypunks, attacks in general. “Definitely a good chance of getting lost when the shadows all look the same. Even if you know the place, familiar landmarks could be there right in front of you and you miss them.” |
The professor Headmaster was funny, wasn't he? Chloe gave him a grin, doubly big for knowing her name right off like that. After last term, it was nice to have someone who seemed somewhat normal standing at the head of the class. Maybe he wasn't normal. Maybe he was also going to end up being evil, or maybe he had bad breath or something. He had the benefit of the doubt for now. "Soggy feet, sir. Getting damp and being unable to get dry again is pretty perilous. And also very unpleasant. And smelly." Not the end of the world, but everyone else already stole the good answers. "I think being anywhere in which you can't see what's around you or under your feet is dangerous, and a Dark creature like a hinkypunk can very easily lead you astray. But I'm still going with wet feet." |
Toddles could not WAIT to tell the Mister Master Headmaster that he was done with the task he had been given. Truly and not in a Toddles way done too! With much much MORE important things to do than tickle his nose with the feather duster between trophies and plaques. All the dust from peeking inside the trophies hoping to find HIS Fluffsies inside made Toddles sneeze terribly all over, so Toddles has to wipe away all his elfsie germs too...and elfsie bogeys could be particularly sticky! Hopefully Toddles no missed any! Toddles POPPED right into classroom 104 with his elfsie magic and landed right SQUISH in front of the Mister Master Headmaster. "Toddles does as Mister Master Headmaster asks!" Toddles revealed gleefully and his tone implying much hurry. "Toddles is done doing Mister Master Headmaster's bidding for now?" His big round eyes looked ever so hopeful. He had HIS Fluffsies to find or else his little elfsie heart would shrivel into nothing without HIS Fluffsies! |
mentions of Zach and Max... It was dark and cold and wet. What COULDN'T go wrong? The darkness made Natalie want to go back to sleep, but she had a feeling that professors (and Headmasters) would frown upon napping Prefects. She wondered how Max got away with it. Speaking of Max, his answer was ridiculous, as was the answer that came from Zachary. They were both two smart-alecks and were asking to get in trouble. Natalie had to resist the urge to roll her eyes at the both of them. Determined to provide better answers than those two boys in her house, Natalie rose her hand. "You could get lost quite easily, sir. You could lose your shoes, or ruin them, like Zoryn said. And if you got caught in a bog at night when it's cold, you could get hypothermia." AND DIE. |
She'd been about to speak up and say that that wasn't what she had meant, but then the Headmaster added that part about 'and not each other'. He got it. Probably not that she had been being facetious, but in general.... The conversation turned to what could go wrong then and somebody (Josie) had already mentioned what she'd been thinking, but it bared repeating. "Definitely alligators! The bog equivalent of a shark, eating everything in its path up to and including people!" It might sound to some like Archer was scared right now and they'd be right. Alligators and crocodiles were no laughing matter! "And fear is their bacon bits!" And now she was looking around for any sign of the shifty creatures, really wishing the Headmaster hadn't shut the door like that. Because now what were they supposed to do if one of the things attacked?! She highly doubted there were any arrows available... Also, were there mosquitos in here? Because she could almost swear she'd just been bitten, her arm itched like it anyway. She scratched subtlely at the point of the suspected bite. |
Toddles To be honest, Harri could hardly care that they were in a dark classroom and was standing on what looked and felt like a swap wetland and that was saying something because the newly sorted Gryffindor disliked m o i s t u r e. But it was her very first class at Hogwarts and she was too excited to mind it. Turning to Igor, she tilted her head. Sounds like her friend didn't enjoy his first feast as much as she. That was sad. Also, who was Odaline? ...A question that has to wait until later because by now the door had closed and the class has officially started. Look around, the Headmaster said. Whoa. OKAY. Very dark. Very cool. An issue or danger one could run into while being in that kind of place? Harri listened to the other answers. Losing one's way and getting stuck there forever (merlin that was SO her), creatures, trees???, wet feet. Did she have anything to add? Nope. Her eleven year old brain didn't have any other answer, thanks. So she stood there without a word, nodding, until the house elf appeared. "OH! Toddles, hi!" She waved in the dimness. |
Aaron began to giggle at the man's proclamation of HUFFLEPUFF!, but then he stopped himself. Because he was a FIFTH YEAR now...and that meant he was an older, more mature Aaron Botros. So, instead, he beamed at the new Headmaster and bounced on the ball of his feet a bit. He'd just have to get the excitement out in other, more appropriate ways. So he wasn't embarrassing himself... cause that tended to happen a lot these days. Being a teenager was really embarrassing. All on its own. It was difficult to maneuver with so little light, but the Hufflpuff did his best, inching closer to the teacher and his classmates. The false moon, actually, wasn't that helpful, given that it was mostly obscured, but anyway. He had to stop himself from casting lumos. There was an aesthetic at play, and who was he to disturb it. And though this was a lesson about Hinkypunks (he was assuming again), this setting would've worked great for Werewolves, as well. Spooky! ...and HOUSE ELF!.... That was a house elf, yeah? He squinted in the direction of the popping noise.. and the high-pitched, squeaky voice. It sounded like one of the elves. He didn't allow himself much time to debate it, however. All would be revealed in good time...he figured. The class wasn't that long. Back on topic! "Poisonous or harmful plants. For example, Devil's Snare. It thrives in the dark, and the wet. So...say a person accidentally steps too close to it, or steps ON IT... It could suffocate the life right out of them!" But not exclusively Devil's snare. Plants were generally terrifying, given their unassuming appearance. Of course, bees required flowers to live, so those weren't that terrible. |
It hadn't escaped his notice how some looked to the door when it closed. Even now some still spared a glance in the direction it used to be. So long as they weren't screaming or otherwise creating unnecessary disruption. It was like he'd said in his rules, he was in charge of the situation and they didn't have to worry. The subject dealt with the dark arts. It wasn't going to be sunshine and daisies but it wouldn't be outright dangerous either. That was what the real world was for. SPOILER!!: replies With the last reply covered, the Headmaster looked to the elf again. The untrustworthy elf. The elf who lost THREE shopping lists and was no longer allowed to do more than one task at a time. It meant seeing a lot more of the elf but Circe knew it was the only way to make sure he actually GOT things done. "No, Toddles is not done." He replied firmly, still sore the elf had spent the Hogwarts funds on three separate occasions and could not fully account for them. "I'll check the armour gallery later but I'd like you to get on the owlery with Nimma and Algamus." He looked to the class again. "Moving on!" No need to keep standing around here. This wasn't where they needed to be. "Everyone, follow me. Watch your step, don't dilly dally, we've got places to be. I'm sure it hasn't escaped any of you that I'm the only one currently in possession of any form of light. Keep your wands in their holsters, reholster them if you've drawn them. I don't want to see a single illumination charm cast. That entirely defeats the purpose of this little exercise." The light was bright enough that it travelled some distance. Even if they couldn't see him, they could still very much see him. "Follow not only the light, but the sound of my voice." Were they clear? "When I've stopped talking, it will be especially important to pay attention to this light, my light." With that, the man began to move through the bog. The immediate area had bushes, low hanging branches, muddy soil and the occasional over grown root. So long as they were cautious, they would be fine. "Quick recap while we walk." He said, carefully moving through the terrain. It was very important that they followed his instructions because he'd turned his back to them in order to see the path ahead. "Plenty of dangers in bogs. Magical creatures. Magical plants. Regular, predatory creatures. Bugs. The terrain itself. There were quite a few suggestions...and a few consequences. That being said, I'd like to discourage everyone from tripping and breaking your neck. Similarly, I wouldn't recommend falling onto a jagged rock. If you don't die, it doesn't break the rules but....still painful and you'll miss the fun stuff." He covered a few of the answers touched on while he walked, occasionally pausing to ensure they were still going the right way--inconvenient for anyone walking too close to him. "A few of you mentioned hinkypunks, and in case it isn't by this point obvious that they'll be the focus of this lesson, they are. That said, what do you know about hinkypunks? Or, you can tell me what actions you would take if you found yourself travelling through an area like this with several lanterns leading off in different directions." They could answer both if they wanted to, but he'd appreciate them answering even one. OOC: Aaaand we're moving. Right now your students should be moving with Malachi through the bog, doing nothing but following his lantern. He's asked two questions, they can answer both or just one--or neither he may not know  This lesson will move on again in about 24 - 28 hours from the point of this post <3 |
is Was Vita particularly proud that her answer had gotten praise? Yes. Inside, the sixth year was beaming with pride. Outwardly she did her best to maintain a calm expression and bowed her head when a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. So far, so good. Falling into step with the others, the brunette let her senses kick into full gear as she followed the headmaster on their journey. As for his question... "Hinkypunks use light to lure travelers off track, giving them a false sense of hope. A light in the dark isn't always a good thing where they are concerned, particularly because they have been known to produce fireballs." |
SPOILER!!: headmaster trent Mark's answer was more about the Redcaps but it seemed the Headmaster was more focused on the other aspect of his answer on getting picked off if you were separated. Which Redcaps could do if they so chose to. It turned out that the lesson was about Hinkypunks as he had deduced earlier in his thoughts and from the other classmates answers. The whole scenario just screamed Hinkypunk. He paid no mind to the House Elf that appeared because it did not concern him. But he did wonder what the House Elf had to do in the Amour Gallery. Probably just dusting the suits of Armor in there. Nothing else but that to do in there it seemed. Removing his wand and lighting the tip of it with the illumination charm never crossed his mind. He was so focused on the Headmaster NOT FROM ANY KIND OF POTION MIND YOU...but just from being entranced by the lesson at hand kept his mind busy with Questions and Answers. He hurried along and began to follow the man...NOT BECAUSE A POTION MADE HIM WANT TO! HE JUST WANTED TO OKAY? It was for lesson purposes. If he didn't he would be separated from the group and get lost. "They will sometimes wail or holler to attract attention and make unsuspecting travelers inspect the noise as well as the light. As though it were an injured person, perhaps." He responded to the Question, forgetting to disguise his voice to avoid being pegged as the Headmaster's loyal servant. |
Catch up-ish at the beginning What could go wrong? Basically, Drewett could give an entire list of what could go wrong in this setting, in this class, in this school, in today's wizarding society and community. He was also rather good at spotting the pros and cons of things and situations. He very much preferred running away and noping his way out of all the possibly awful things in life. Like creatures ranked higher than XX, for instance. This Ravenclaw was not having that. Drewett chose to remain silent as he listened to his other classmates' responses. He was already making a bit of a face as he visualized what they all said, and he was glad not everyone could see the face he was making. Hinkypunks...werewolves...gytrashes...trees....sur e. Basically most of the things that he'd rather avoid. .........But keeping their wands in their holsters? Drewett was about to pull his wand out and now he was somehow gaping. Aside from being outside of Hogwarts and summer tutorials at the Stemp House, he never walked around without his wand with him. So much more when he felt limited to his other senses besides vision. This was making him rather anxious already and although he wanted to believe that the headmaster would never allow them close to serious harm, it was also hard to trust any member of the Hogwarts staff given what they've been through last term...and the term before that...and the term before that. Opting not to get into trouble, however, he remained quiet but kept his fingers on his holster. Just in case. He wasn't taking it out though. Back to the question. As if it were precautionary, Drewett tried to mentally remember what the rank of this creature was until he released...it probably wasn't ranked. He wasn't sure if it were ranked higher than XX, and he would know. He spent a considerable amount of time trying to know what creatures he wanted to avoid. With that, he awkwardly raised his hand. "I-I believe they're not ranked in the m-ministry classification of creatures, sir... p-probably because they might n-not be considered creatures...." They were wispy smoke creatures, right? But not... like... a creature one can physically touch. He hoped he made sense. |
Wow. That was all Taddy could think as he settled with the class with the discussion on their surroundings and how to survive any outcome. This was really useful to the twelve-year old. Maybe that's why Mark found him so cool, he thought. Tad was starting to agree. Now they were on the move, okay. He got right up and he only had the lead of the Headmaster and his lantern, oh, and of course his classmates. He wasn't bothered by the dirtiness of the situation. There wasn't anything overtly dangerous to him at the moment, but look were deceiving. So what did he know about Hinkypunks? "Er... The Hinkypunk is a dance step. You know, you do the hinkypunk and then you turn yourself around." Wasn't that what it was all about? "I mean, that would kind of work here too right? Turning around and making sure nothing else funny was going on with all the lights." Surely. |
SPOILER!!: Isla Rylee wrapped an arm around her shoulders giving her a gentle squeeze. "It takes some getting used to but I'm always up early. If you're worried about oversleeping I can stop by your dorm and knock on the door for you." There was no harm in checking in on her cousin and her dorm mates as well. "Mm... I uh... yeah... pumpkin juice isn't high up on my list anymore either..." And she would much rather not speak of things that happened last night. Even though the situation was mostly taken care of it still made her stomach do flips. SPOILER!!: Headmaster Trent! Rylee nodded only slightly in response to the Headmaster though there was a small sense of happiness coursing through her that she had been correct. And they were moving on! "Isla keep close, yeah?" she whispered to the younger lioness. It wasn't that she didn't trust her cousin, it was simply knowing her knowing how lessons like this went. With Isla being a firstie and never casting any charms yet, Rylee was going to be keeping as close an on eye her as possible. Along with several others that she was used to keeping an eye on for various reasons. "Be careful." Each step was taken carefully and with as much preciseness as she could manage. The goal was indeed not to trip, break her neck and die or fall on a jagged rock and miss out on a fun lesson as the Headmaster so kindly put it. Which truthfully had the ginger lioness smirking to herself. "When hit with the Lumos Duo Charm they solidify and become blinded by the light so you can defend yourself against them quickly," she answered raising a hand into the air. And hopefully whatever defense used against them was done properly and effectively at that. |
Oh good. He might have been behind in his studies compared to his classmates but he was able to answer questions logically and get them correct without making a fool of himself. However everyone else’s complex responses about specific magical creatures and whatnot did make him feel a little bit insecure. How much would he have to learn before the end of the year in order to successfully pass his OWL’s? He was half listening to his fellow students responses when a house elf magically appeared in front of the Headmaster. He hadn’t made his mind up about the poor creatures yet. The class progressed and Caolan followed behind the group in front not wanting to seem too eager but close enough to be able to listen to everything that was being said considering it was too dark to use his notebook to take notes. Guess he’d have to store it all in his noggin’. He kept one eye on his feet and the other on the environment in front of him ducking under branches and almost walking into another student in the process. As for the lesson subject Caolan knew the basics which had already been covered by the answers from the other students so he didn’t raise his hand to answer the questions. He’d probably say something stupid or too basic and he just wasn’t prepared for the ridicule. He DID have an answer for the second question about what they could do to prepare themselves. “Carry your wand at all times.” It was simple but correct right? Just don’t go out without your wand or else you’re screwed. |
Some catch up at the beginning Huh, so class wouldn’t always be like this. That was a good thing, Cordelia concluded when she saw the expansive swamp around her. Everywhere was just mud, mud, mud. Mud. Why did it have to be mud? As much as she enjoyed outdoor activities, Cordelia was not overly fond of mud. Mud was icky and sticky. Here she was, stuck in it with no way out for the duration of the lesson. This was so gross. There was one thing Cordelia hated almost as much as her useless pancreas, and that thing was mud. Funny thing for a kid who loved playing outdoors to hate, but that was just how life was. What were the issues with the terrain her? Hello, mud was clearly the answer. ”You could get stuck in the mud and not be able to get out or get lost in the dark.” This being defense against the dark arts, how to not get stuck in mud was probably not the direction the professor was going to take the class, but this was her first day of classes ever after all. The first year girl didn’t have any other information to draw from. Cordelia trudged along through the mud, the ground squelching beneath her feet, as she followed the headmaster through the bog. Oh, hinkypunks. Never heard of them before. What was a hinkypunk? She carefully followed the headmaster’s instructions as she followed the light. Wouldn’t want to get lost in this bog. Dying was not allowed in her very first class ever. Cordelia wanted to survive past her first day, thank you very much. Now, to answer the headmaster’s question, what did she know about hinkypunks? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Surely the headmaster wasn’t expecting answers from the first years regarding hinkypunks. The second question posed by the headmaster, however, she could answer. ”I don’t know anything about hinkypunks, headmaster, but if I were traveling like this and saw lanterns leading off in different directions I guess I would try to stick to the path I was on to avoid getting lost.” What did different lanterns going in different directions have to do with hinkypunks? Hopefully by the end of this lesson she would have the answer. |
"Aren't they the ones that carry lanterns and can hurl fireballs at you?" Josie had to keep herself from gulping at the idea. Being locked in a dark room like last year seemed like a walk in the park suddenly compared to the possibly of being burned to a crisp... but the other question kind of stumped her. She couldn't run away considering the chance of a fireball to the back... and clearly following them could lead to her being injured in other ways... Plus what if she followed one of the lights offended the others and again she was facing multiple balls of flame being thrown at her. "And pray that death at least is swift and painless..." Only halfway joking since she didn't have a better answer to offer. |
Isla knew she could always count on Rylee to make her feel better. Rylee offered to knock on her first-year girl's dorm door to wake them up. Aww... how nice of her to do that for her! "Oh Rylee, I don't want to trouble you every morning. But I do appreciate your kind offer!" she smiled brightly, squeezing her older cousin's hand. Isla just wanted to become more independent and learn to be responsible for her own time. "Okay..." Isla muttered a reply back as she huddled close to Rylee. Not once letting her hand go as they tread carefully across the rough muddy terrain. Her impulsive need to reach for her wand was growing stronger each time they took a step deeper into the dark abyss. "Rylee...I'm scared..." She might have been placed in Gryffindor house but that does not mean she was immune to the fear of danger and darkness. Hearing about the Hinkypunks made her feel wary about her surroundings too. Rylee did say that if they aimed Lumos duo towards them, they would be blinded and frozen?! If that is true, shouldn't they be reaching for their wands now! Rylee made sure to hide behind Rylee if the creature decided to jump out of the blue and scare them. |
