Winter is coming to an end and the early signs of Spring have just started to show. You may notice the little green buds starting to form on the trees, the wet dew on the grass instead of frost, and of course your Charms professor turning into a ghost.
Well, that had nothing to do with Spring, but it was a new development. If you somehow managed to miss the great commotion that occured in the courtyard just recently, you may not know, but your Charms professor had become an untimely snack to the pink critters roaming about the castle. But not to worry! She’s still here in spirit!
Literally.
Not letting her lesson plans go to waste, Dolly had scheduled her lesson as normal and had shown up to the classroom at the designated time. There was no excuse to miss class! She had a little difficulty setting up for class, however, since she was now unable to... touch anything.
Oh well. She would manage.
The Charms Classroom door is wide open and Dolly Dopple, the Charms ghost is hovering in front of the room, hands clasped, her normal smile on her transparent face. As usual, her cat, Laura, is perched on the edge of the desk, completely still. Not even blinking. Still, quite possibly dead. Or was it now a ghost too?
OOC: Welcome to Charms! Keep in mind that it is now late February. This class occurs a few days after the meeting in the courtyard, so Dolly is now a ghost. Class has not started yet! Go ahead and post your student arriving to class. The class will move on in about 24 hours, approximately 8 PM GMT-7.

Daisy decided to list a Muggle method of hiding blemishes as she raised her hand. "I know that Muggles have this beauty product called concealer that covers blemishes such as dark circles under their eyes I think it comes in a bottle and it is a liquid that usually matches the person's skin colour." She probably could have named more but she decided to stick to one answer.

A lot of others had offered to help the ghostly professor too, but Stasya felt like it had been her and Chloe and Derf who’d started the trend. Which could very well have been due to their status as student leaders, but it didn’t change her feelings about it. Nor did it change her question of exactly how Professor Dopple could keep teaching them Charms when she couldn’t actually touch anything and had admitted it too.
Not to mention she was immensely curious what personal appearances and things they wished they could change had to do with whatever they’d be learning. As it was, she had found herself unable to really think of an answer to the first question. When she was younger, she’d been a bit self-conscious about her height, but she didn’t really feel that anymore, so it didn’t seem like something she ought to mention. She could come up with a few responses for the second question, though, and she’d raised her hand shortly after Daisy. “I don’t know if it’s exactly enhancing, but there are Transfiguration spells that witches can use to change their hair color and all sorts of other things about their appearance.”

So Dopple agreed with him but...kept going with the same line of questions?
Cameron was a bit confused.
Hopefully there was a point to all these questions, one that didn't just make them think hard on all their apparent faults and other aspects of their body other people might not approve of. "Perhaps growing hair, like a beard or just the hair on your head, or wearing clothes that cover whatever you want to cover." He suggested after raising his hand.

Tina almost laughed at the tattoo conversation taking place between Professor Dopple and one of her housemates (Indigo). So Dopple had tattoos removed at some point… that was surprising! Tina tried to imagine a much younger version of the ghostly professor sporting tattoos. It was a bit funny to think about! Dopple didn't seem the tattoo type at all!
Tina's amusement quickly turned to embarrassment at her own answer. Yes, Professor, she knew she could charm her clothes to be longer (and had done just that on a number of occasions). The point she was trying to make was that it was annoying to have to do that, especially during the summer when she had to ask someone to charm her clothes for her, as she was still underage and technically not allowed to use magic outside of school. She hated asking people for help! Never mind… she reminded herself that the professor was probably just trying to be nice. Okay, moving on…
So they were keeping with the theme of appearances for the next question. Did that mean they would be learning some charm to enhance one's appearance? Tina hoped so! Otherwise, this conversation amounted to nothing but unrelated nonsense! At least this question was a bit easier than the first. She could think of plenty of things people used to enhance their beauty. How was she going to pick just one when her mind was swirling with possible answers.
In the end she went with the beauty enhancement she was most familiar with using. She raised her hand and waited to be called on. “What about nail art, Professor?” she said, showing her own brightly painted nails as an example. “Some people -” Herself included. “- use nail polish to paint colors or designs on their nails, which one can argue enhances their beauty by making them more colorful.” Though the extent to which it counted as a beauty enhancement was debatable, she hoped it was an acceptable answer nonetheless.

There were lots of ways, both magical and mundane, to change how you looked. Chloe absently began to braid Derf's fur as she listened to her classmates share their ideas. He'd have to go write on the board in a moment, but she needed to get his fur out of his eyes first.
"Maybe something as simple as a haircut? Or changing the color of your hair? And you can do both of those with magic or through physical means."

It was definitely weird that their professor was teaching them even though she was a GHOST. Like, where they gonna acknowledge this or......?
Whatever.
WHATEVER.
Emma was gonna play along. "There are color changing charms you can use on your hair." She raised her hand, and tried to think of other ways. "And potions that can change your appearance."

It was pretty obvious that they were going to be learning some sort of appearance changing charm. But Indigo wasn't sure exactly what that would be yet. There were a number of possibilities, some mentioned by his classmates in response to the next question. Color changing charms, hair growth... Indigo tried to come up with other options before remembering that Dopple had asked for answers that were either magical or mundane, so his answer didn't necessarily have to be a spell.
"As for something mundane, there's makeup, professor. That's a pretty broad category, but lots of people use it to try to enhance their beauty." Indigo was specifically thinking of the eyeliner that he had worn a few times before. It always made him feel attractive.
When the first student raised their hand, Dolly pointed at her with a smile. Concealer, yes, it was quite a popular tool in the muggle world. She thought Primpernelle’s had something like that too. ”Yes, you’re quite right! Makeup is very common both for muggles and for us!” A little mascara never hurt anyone.

Dolly too was curious about what these students thought they would like to change about themselves. Of course it was a little silly, but she knew that some pimply thirteen year old would appreciate it. ”Yes, you’re right,” Dolly said to the next student. ”There are quite a few transfiguration spells to do that.” She, for instance, had once dyed her hair a cotton candy pink!

It was part of the lesson! She wasn’t going to spoil everything now! Dolly raised her eyebrows when this boy replied to her question. ”Oh, I suppose that could be true. I’m afraid I’ve never been able to grow a beard, though.” Such a shame.

Dolly called on the last student before moving on. ”Yes, of course! Makeup! The old traditional way.” Though still a lot of people still used makeup. ”Thank you, dear.”
Once she was pleased with the amount of answers she had received, Dolly hovered back over by the chalkboard, once again clapping her ghosty hands together (force of habit) without making any noise. ”Alright, everyone! We’re going to move onto our first activity!”
”Now, I know we’ve been talking about ways to fix certain things about us, or enhance the way we look, but like this young gentleman mentioned,” she pointed to Cameron, ”this is all very superficial, isn’t it?” Focusing on what you looked like on the outside wasn’t a very good idea. It led a lot of people to just be SAD and self centered.
”So, what we’re going to do, is focus a moment on all the beauty that we already have! I want you all to turn to your neighbor and tell them FOUR things you like about them. Okay? And I want you to tell them at least two physical traits, too.” You know, so EVERYONE felt pretty.
OOC: Welcome to the mini activity! This will last TWO DAYS. You need to post your character turning to someone in the class and tell them FOUR things they like about them. You can do this in one post or as many as you like. The lesson will move on in TWO DAYS, around March 4th at 10pm (GMT-7).

Indigo kind of agreed with what Cam had pointed out earlier. Focusing on what they'd like to change about their appearance was... well, not very healthy. Dissatisfaction with their appearance caused a lot of people to have low self esteem issues. So, he kind of liked this new part of the lesson where they could focus on good things. He especially liked that he was sitting next to Vita, and there were loads of good things about her. Limiting it to only four would be the hard part. He turned to her with a little smile.
"I know I've said this to you before but you're a very good friend who I know I could always count on and who anyone would be lucky to have on their side. And you're very nice and genuinely care about others and I think that's really special." Two comments on physical traits now? "I may not be the best person to ask..." You know, considering he wasn't really into girls. "But I think you're very pretty. Specifically I think your eyes look.. warm, and your hair looks very soft." See? Complimenting Vita was easy.

Tina beamed at the professor's reply. She was pleased with herself for coming up with an answer that Professor Dopple seemed to like, but she couldn't help but feel a bit sorry that she couldn't enjoy nail art anymore. Art - any kind of art, even nail art - was Tina's favorite thing in the world. She couldn't imagine how awful she'd feel if she had to give that up!
She shook her head, trying to refocus her attention. If she continued down that thought path, it would make her too sad to learn, and she couldn't earn good marks if she didn't learn. Not to mention the fact that she'd look vulnerable in front of her classmates. and… yeesh, that made everything awkward! Luckily, Dopple's instructions distracted her before her thoughts did.
Well, this lesson went in an unexpected direction! Tina thought they'd be comparing a non magique muggle beauty enhancement with a magical one or practicing the incantation and/or wand movement of some charm to change one's appearance, but no. Instead they were supposed to name things they liked about the person sitting next to them. Uhh… what exactly did that have to do with charms?
Tina supposed Dopple was just trying to be kind, but she found it a tad misguided. Was it really complimenting someone if you were only doing it because a professor said so? That seemed… dishonest. Besides, compliments (especially forced ones) didn't really make Tina feel better about herself. Good marks made her feel good about herself; house points made her feel good about herself, and she didn't like having to depend on another person to earn them! What if nobody wanted to work with her? Then she couldn't do the work, and her own marks would suffer!
Better get this over with, Tina thought. She looked to the person on her left. “Will you work with me?” she asked, hoping they would say yes. If not, she supposed she could ask the person on her right or, if all else failed, the person in front of her, but Merlin, how embarrassing would that be?!

Giving compliments was easy, Vita did it all the time. She liked seeing the good in people and pointing it out, particularly to the people she cared for. She knew they didn't always see those things in themselves and it never hurt to be reminded. It was the taking compliments part that she had trouble with. She was just relieved it was Indigo she was sitting beside. At least she knew that he knew her, so his words weren't made up or based off her appearance alone. It was reassuring somehow. Easier to swallow, definitely.
Mirroring his smile, Vita listened carefully to everything he said, her cheeks slowly turning color as her blush intensified. "Wow, you really think highly of me, huh?" She joked, but only because she was a bit overwhelmed by what he'd said. It was really sweet and meant a lot, particularly the part about her being a good friend. "Thank you, Indigo." She reached over and gave his arm a squeeze. Now it was her turn, yes?
"First off, you're an amazing listener. I know that I can come to you with something and that you'll sit with me and let me talk in circles and that you'll hear me, really get what I'm trying to say." It was nice to have someone you knew that would listen and not judge. She felt lucky to have that with him. "You're also super smart. You think things through, talk them out before making decisions. I like that about you." As for the physical stuff, Vita took a moment to look him over, a smile playing on her lips. "You've got great eyebrows and even though it doesn't happen as often as I think it should, your smile is incredible." It lit up his whole face, did he know?

Wait, the professor wanted to tame CHLOE'S hair? That seemed... perfectly reasonable, actually, and Chloe wondered if that was a real offer. She beamed behind her furry fringe and turned her attention to giving compliments to a neighbor.
Her neighbor happened to be Head Boy Derf. "I think you have to tell me how very lush and tangle-free my fur is now. That's definitely the only bit of me anyone can see, and I've been using a bottle of conditioner a week on it." Not that she really needed a compliment on something that was driving her CRAZY.

Him? Write?
Oh boy.
Derf had honestly been hoping to help with a demonstration rather than this element since his penmanship left much to be desired. Hopefully his peers were good listeners and wouldn't be relying on his chalk writing for their notes and such.
"Certainly, professor," he nodded humbly as he slipped out of his seat and manned the board for the time being. And since he was busy writing he didn't really have time to answer this one himself, though he added it in on his own somewhere in the middle of writing everyone else's down. Some overlapped a bit soooo he kinda left them naturally combine.
Photos!: the blackboard a la Derfael
Dusting his hands off on his trousers, the seventh year returned to his seat ONLY when Professor Dopple revealed that they were to compliment the person sitting next to them - in this case one Chloe Kettleburn.
Swallowing a bit nervously, he dismissed himself from the blackboard and slipped back into his seat as his Head-mate proceeded to make good on that earlier request of braiding his hair. "You know I have always liked your hair," reminds with a bit of a dry laugh. "Always have compared it to unicorn hair since we were first years." So...that was one compliment, yeah? But...he also reckoned that the things he liked about Chloe were not physical. At least not the first ten or so things to pop to mind. "Um..." Can't really ruffle his hair in the moment since she was braiding it and all, so his usual nervous twitch was out of the question. "You're a super generous person, you know? You are a giver in so many ways, human and creature alike. Also wicked bright and not just in the expected Ravenclaw kind of way. You help put me at ease about, you know, being myself...and I think your level of acceptance is one of the more beautiful things about you. Like...if I was asked which Ravenclaw trait you best represent? I'd say Acceptance first...and reckon Individuality second. Cause you also march to your own beat and that's really neat too"
There. Four compliments.
None of them physical though. Wait. He hadn't done the assignment then. Fudgesticks.
Maybe no one would notice and he could, you know, bank a little on Professor Dopple not being the most observant of professors?

Daisy was looking for someone to work with when she heard a voice from her right. It was from Tina. "I'd love to work with you." She moved closer to Tina and began to think about what the Hufflepuff liked about the Ravenclaw.
"Well, let's get the psychical aspects out of the way first. I think you have beautiful eyes. There's a depth to them as if there is a deep pool of thoughts behind them. I also love the almost porcelain colour of your face."
Daisy then thought about Tina's personality, having attended lessons with her. "I like that you are genuine. You don't believe in hiding behind a facade. You show determination which is an admirable trait as is your independent streak. Finally, you're a very creative young woman."

The Sixth-Year nervously awaited Tina's reply.
For a moment, Tina worried she wouldn't be able to find a partner, and she'd have to keep asking and asking people until time ran out and she missed the activity. She was relieved when Daisy agreed to work with her, not only because she needed a partner to complete the assignment, but Daisy was one of the few people in the school she liked. That was going to make giving compliments so much easier! Tina didn't do fake compliments, class assignment or not.
She listened intently as Daisy spoke, a smile spreading across her face. She'd never given much thought to having a depth to her eyes or porcelain skin, but it was nice to hear. "Thanks," she said, beaming. "That means a lot." As nice as the physical compliments were, the things Daisy said about her personality meant much more to Tina. Coming from someone else, she probably would've dismissed it as hollow flattery for the sake of getting the assignment done, but Daisy didn't strike Tina as a faker.
"Wow, that's going to be a tough act to follow!" Tina joked. She was pretty sure that was a lot more than four compliments! She hoped she could think of enough kind things to say to match them. She studied Daisy's face to help her brainstorm physicial compliments. This was going to be a bit difficult... not because Daisy was ugly, no! Tina just didn't pay much attention to outward appearances; she preferred to focus on inner beauty. After all, outer beauty often hid inner ugliness. She'd experienced that firsthand.
The first thing Tina noticed was Daisy's hair. "I love your hair!" she said. "It's such a rich shade of brown..." Not like her hair that couldn't decide whether it wanted to be brown or black! Her mind combed through details from her past encounters with Daisy until she thought of another physical trait. "and your smile... it's really warm and welcoming." Granted, she'd only seen it once or twice, but it was still nice.
Now that the two physical trait requirement was out of the way, Tina found it much easier to think. "I've always admired your work ethic," she said. "You give it your all in classes and don't let setbacks stop you from trying. Also, the way you look out for others - and not just the younger students - is inspiring! You're kind and always willing to help people, and... I wish I was more like that."
Did that sound too sappy? Probably, but Tina stood by it.

Well, Merlin, Derf... way to knock a girl right out of her furry little socks. Chloe wibbled at his compliments, suddenly thankful that her face was covered in fur so that no one could see her blushing. And how very pleased she was at his words.
"I'm... well. Thank you. I mean, that's the nicest..." Nope, time to focus on the class assignment. Chloe stopped braiding Derf's fur and gave him a serious look. "You've the warmest, brightest eyes, and they crinkle just so in the corners when you're smiling or thinking. I like how expressive they are. And you're very strong, I reckon from Quidditching so well, and I've always admired how you use that strength to take care of people and things."
So that was two, and why was it so mortifying to compliment your friends like this? Ahem. "ALSO, I've noticed that you have such a strong sense of right and wrong. I know that sometimes seems like a bad thing, but I think it's amazing. You can do the right thing without letting popular opinion get in the way of it. And you're the kindest and best person I know. Picketta adores you, and it isn't because you spoil her rotten. It's because she knows she's absolutely safe and absolutely cared for."
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy blushed slightly as Tina complimented her. "Thank you so much, Tina. What you said about me made me feel really special." When Tina mentioned how she would like to have a certain personality trait, Daisy placed a hand on the Ravenclaw's shoulder and replied with, "You are fine the way you are. Believe me, it is sometimes hard being nice."

They had to give each other compliments? Erm...ok. For some reason, this made Nettie nervous. She looked to her neighbor and bit her lip. She was used to always THINKING nice things about people, but having to say it? To their face? Why was this so weird to her? What kind of person was she!? Maybe it was mostly due to her being a bit self conscious at the moment. Cause of HAIR things.
"I need a partner," she piped up quietly.

Valencia smiled. "I'm free." she said. She looked the older girl over. Being forced to compliment someone's appearance was not her favorite thing in the world... but she understood the concept.
Four things. That was easy enough.
"I like your hair." Usually. There was a bit more of it than usual and it seemed the older girl wasn't sure about what to do about it, but this still counted, right? "I also think you have really nice eyes. Anddd... you're good at quidditch. And you seem to have a lot of friends - so that means you're nice." Probably. Or really mean. One of the two.

Oh, good, a nearby first year was going to help her! Nettie DID like being adored by younger students. It didn't happen often - or ever really - but she'd always imagined it happening and now it was! Nettie knew Valencia from Quidditch too, so she'd be able to give her compliments back without having to make anything up!
"Oh, thanks," Nettie chuckled, lightly touching the bun on the top of her head. It was...yeah. A whole THING. She blushed a little as she complimented her - sure, she could let the young girl believe she had a lot of friends. She did, but things were...complicated right now with at least half of them. She smiled at her when she was finished. "Thank you, that was nice."
Ok, now her turn! "You're very sweet, and confident for having the courage to try out for Quidditch as a first year!" she told her. "I like your hair as well. And...you have a nice smile!" There, four things! That had been easy.

Natasha looked around to see if anyone still needed a partner. She tried to speak up, but she felt more shy than normal. She didn't really want someone analysing her looks. While she didn't have any major blemishes or defects that could be seen, she had always felt that she looked extremely plain, having no features that really stood out, good or bad.
Once the activity was started and class was abuzz, Dolly floated around, passing through each aisle of desks to watch and listen to her students. Oh, it was just so cute! Watching them compliment each other and seeing the other one BLUSH and get flustered. It probably meant that these teenagers weren’t complimenting each other enough, if they all got so flustered when they heard good things about themselves. Maybe she should start each class with a requirement of telling their neighbor something good about them... Hmm.
After a few minutes, which she thought was sufficient enough, Dolly floated back up to the front of the classroom (accidentally floating right through Trinetta).
”WONDERFUL job, everyone! I hope that helped you all understand that beauty is really quite subjective, and that all of you have qualities on the INSIDE that make you a beautiful person.” Is that what they learned? Hopefully.
”Now we’re going to move onto our main activity for today! Could I please get ONE volunteer?!” She knew she had some volunteers at the beginning of class, but honestly, that was such a long time ago and she had already forgotten who they were.
”My volunteer, please write the following incantation on the chalkboard.” She cleared her throat before continuing. ”Pulchtritudo. P-U-L-C-H-T-R-I-T-U-D-O. Pulchitrudo.” It was quite a strange word, but Merlin had to set the trend with making spell names based off of Latin words! Anyway... ”This, my dear students, is the Beauty Charm. Oh, write this down too,” she added to the volunteer who was writing on the board. ”The wand movement is an EASY, quick TAP. Just flick your wand towards the target and - POOF! The blemish will be gone!” But only for a short time.
”The Beauty Charm is a temporary, but effective charm that will mask any blemish or imperfection on your skin. It is similar to makeup in the sense that it won’t last forever, but it looks quite natural!” Sometimes makeup made the skin look cakey, especially if you were OLD like her. ”So, for our last activity, I want you all to practice the new charm and then perform it on either yourself or someone around you.”
”Now, if you were blessed by the skin gods like ME and don’t have any blemishes to hide, I have a box up here full of stick on warts and pimples that will work just fine. Now, if there aren’t any questions.... Get to work!” She was intrigued to see who would use the charm on themselves and who would use a fake pimple.
OOC: This is the last activity for the class! You will be posting your students practice the charm on themselves or others. There is a box of fake warts and pimples at the front of the class if they wish to use those. Any one of you who volunteered at the beginning of calss can be the volunteer here!
If you have a question for the professor, please put "PROFESSOR" in the title of your post!
This one is shorter - you only have 48 hours to complete this activity! If you didn't finish the last activity, don't fret! You are allowed to catch up!
Class will move on/finish on Thursday at about 10pm (GMT-7).

Removing blemishes with a spell? Merlin, it didn't sound like a terribly good idea to point a wand at her own face, especially with a new spell. Especially for a few of these first years who barely knew which was to point their wand.
But Chloe was willing to learn the spell, especially if it kept her from breaking out right before some big day in the future. Only, was a blemish really the worst thing in the world? She'd probably just wash her face again and move on, rather than worrying over a pimple.
"Pulchitrudo." She tried the word out. Big and complicated. At least the wand motion was simple.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy raised her hand. "I'll write on the board, Professor Dopple," Daisy said as she got up and made her way over to the blackboard.

She then sat back down at her desk. She did have a pimple forming on her forehead due to stress so she decided to use the charm on herself. Daisy only went through the pronunciation of the incantation. "Pulchtritudo," she said in her mind about three times before feeling confident enough in trying the spell.
Daisy flicked her wand towards the blemish on her forehead as she said, "Pulchtritudo," and finishing with a quick tap. Soon it looked as if Daisy had put concealer on the pimple.
