| | Boathouse Every September 1st, the first years arrive at Hogwarts by boats that carry them across the Great Lake to the Boathouse. Apart from the entrance from the Lake through the long tunnel underneath the castle, this underground harbour can also be reached from the Boathouse Steps which leads down the side of the cliff on which the castle sits and from the path leading down from the paved courtyard.
The Boathouse store the boats for the arriving first years and departing seventh years, but with permission from the Groundskeeper you may be permitted to use one of the boats for an afternoon or two. Life vests, oars, fishing tools, nets and everything else you might need are either hanging on hooks or nails on the wall or lying on the wooden bench. Please put everything back in its proper place, should you move stuff around. The Groundskeeper will know if you haven't.

| Penny Lane <3 Sassenach | RAVENPUFF | Sing me a song of a lass that is gone | bookDRAGON | #awkwardturtle<# There was something soothing about the boathouse. Hanna didn't know what it was, but on one of her walks around the castle she found herself there with nobody else around. It was quiet, and it felt like nature. All she wanted to do was get in one of them on a lovely, crisp, autumn day and paddle out in a Nicholas Sparks way.
She settled for sitting amongst the boats, a romance book in her hands. She flipped it open to where her bookmark was, and continued reading.

| For Nettie and Lissy :3 Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right. You couldn't doubt that Mark had found a fondness toward rowboats since his parents moved to the lake home a few years back. While his sister was pretty much avoiding the small dinghy of a rowboat their dad fixed up, Mark had gotten used to learning how to row.
He was very happy he got to show off his rowing skills during the Defense Against the Dark Arts class. Nettie got to see him do something he was good at that wasn't something like chess. Wait why did he care about that?!
Mark walked around the boat house and looked at each of the different rowboats floating on the lake water. He hadn't gotten permission to take one out from the Groundskeeper, so...he wasn't going to take one out. He sat in one of the rowboats and took out a comic books from his bag. He wanted to read about heroes who shrunk in size but wasn't sure if he should read The Atom or Ant-Man......hmmmmmm |

She referred to it as a JOURNAL, but let's be honest - it was a diary. She had so many thoughts and feelings this term, which was a shock to her, and she needed SOMEWHERE to unleash them all before her head exploded. She thought she'd be LESS stressed with the Ministry professors gone. On the contrary, she'd been even more stressed. Between classes, battling a good friend for her Seeker position, and of course her adventures in trying to figure out the dating scene - yeah. Nettie had never felt such pressure before. It was jarring.
The common room was stuffy, and too crowded. She decided to get some fresh fall air, and suddenly found herself headed to the boathouse. She didn't anticipate anyone to be here, so it would be the best place to journal and get her thoughts out.
Except when she got there - she saw Mark was there. Reading comic books, it looked like. She hadn't expected anyone to be here, but now that she was here with her friend, she decided it wouldn't hurt to do a bit of socializing. Took her mind off things for a minute, at least. Smiling, she hurried up to him and crawled in to the boat with him. "Odd place to read comics, isn't it?" she asked with a grin.

Smiling, she hurried up to him and crawled in to the boat with him. "Odd place to read comics, isn't it?" she asked with a grin. On one hand. Ant-Man was Marvel, on the other The Atom was DC. Both were equally as good and he was for sure going to read them, but which should he read first? The Atom comic was the 2nd incarnation of the hero, while Ant-Man was the first and oldest comic he currently held. Mark was more a fan of the current art styles and well The Atom seemed more intriguing and relative since he was closer to the current times. he put Ant-Man back in his bag and start to read the comic.
His mind focused on this task until he felt the rowboat shift!? OH NO was it not tied down!? Was he now about to float in to the Black Lake...this was not his intention!! He was gonna get in trouble and he hadn't meant it at all. His head darted up and looked around hesitantly to see if the oars were not left on the dock so he could quickly move himself back closer passing over one Nettie a few times until his head stopped and looked right at her in the eyes.
was Merlin teasing him or something? He literally just was thinking about her and here she was? In a boat with him again. He blushed and looked down to hide the red in his checks. "I was actually hear just to admire the Rowboats." He admitted somewhat truthfully. "It seemed a peaceful enough place to sit and read for a bit too." He looked back up his flushed cheeks having calmed into a softer pink than a harsher rosey color from moments before. |

| wow is she oblivious I am sorry curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog Oops, Nettie hadn't meant to startle him. Perhaps she should have made more of an announcement before just jostling the boat and getting in uninvited. She couldn't help but chuckle a little. "Sorry, did I scare you?" she asked. She noticed his blush and assumed it was because she'd snuck up on him and probably startled him in to thinking the boat was going to capsize. Now she felt bad!
Pausing, she looked around at all the boats with a raised eyebrow. "You know, there's a ton of boats in here but in all my time here, I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually OUT on one," she noted. The only time she'd really interacted with the lake had been when they went on that visit to the Merpeople her first term - and that had NOT turned out well at all. "It is nice. I came down here to...be alone," she added with an agreeing nod. She didn't want to say 'write in my diary' because that seemed childish. Nettie was NOT a child. She was fourteen now. A whole year in to teenager-dom!

A whole year in to teenager-dom! Feels a bit more relieved she made no passing notice of his blushing face. Honestly doesn't even really know what to do with these feelings yet. He was basically the youngest of his classmates having his birthday in July so while they were all turning Thirteen he was tuck at twelve for a while longer than them. Which isn't really how that works, but it's certainly how he felt. He spent so much longer attempting to be the more mature sibling between him and his sister and he certainly felt older because of it. "Just a little bit". He admitted. "It's okay though, I'm happy you showed up." company was never a bad thing. "I think we need to get actual permission to use them." Well just permission, it didn't have to be actual permission. Probably wouldn't let some second and third year out on a lake by themselves. Tough. "I like rowing." Besides the Defense Against the Darks Arts lesson from earlier the only other time he went out on a boat here was during the trip toward the castle at night before he was sorted. "Y-you did? Why?" She didn't do a very good job at the being alone thing. If she really wanted to be alone she could have boarded another boat and since he was so focused on his comics he would have probably never seen her come in. |

"Yeah, I've only ever seen them used for the first year boats," she added, which was a bit weird still to her. Why couldn't the first years ride in carriages? Did it really matter as long as they all got sorted? That started making her think about the fact that her sorting was over TWO years ago now. Sheesh. Why had time flown by so fast??
She chuckled a bit and held up her diary journal. "I was just gonna write a bit. The common room was much too loud. But I figured talking to you would be more interesting," she said with a grin. Also that meant she could postpone and ignore her stupid teenage thoughts and problems for a bit.

He supposed then it was a tradition that the School held sentimental value toward? Not really putting much thought into it then. His mind was racing more with thoughts of where he was going to be sorted. Not about the rowboats themselves. If he was going to think about it back then it was rudely interrupted with his original feelings toward being sorted in Ravenclaw, as well as the whole former Headmistress being sacked...Could he even consider that lady his Headmistress then? Probably not. "We could ask to use them if you want to. Y-you and me."
Or just her....it didn't have to be them both. You know he could just ask to use them on his own as well.
Oh Good a different topic! "You write? You mean like, your writing a book, or poetry. That sounds nice." He nodded again. "Yeah the Ravenclaw Tower can sometimes get pretty loud." wait wait wait. Did she say he was more interesting than her writing?! Don't blush don't blush don't...he was blushing. |

If she had noticed the blush - well, she probably still would have made the joke, because she wouldn't have put two and two together. She shook her head when he asked if she wanted to take one out. "Nah, it's ok. I'm not a big boat person, although it's interesting that they have so many of them and we seem to only use them once a year," she muttered with a shrug. She looked down at her book, flipping through the pages. "It's more just like...my thoughts. A journal," she explained. She suddenly realized how close she was, and if he really tried, he probably could read a little bit of her writing from where he sat. She could not have THAT happening. He might accidentally see something about the dates she had been on, and...yeah, no. She moved a little bit to the left, which caused the boat to rock - a bit more than she had anticipated. Eyes widening, she reached out to try and steady herself - and her journal flew right out of her hands and in to the water with a defeating PLOP. It was like the entire scene had played out in slow motion, and now all her secret thoughts were floating to the bottom of the lake, for any merperson to see! "OH NO! MY DIARY!" she exclaimed in horror. Jumping up in alarm, she nearly tumbled backwards out of the boat as it rocked suddenly again, throwing her arms out and steadying herself before she did so, grabbing on to Mark's shoulder to help.

Jumping up in alarm, she nearly tumbled backwards out of the boat as it rocked suddenly again, throwing her arms out and steadying herself before she did so, grabbing on to Mark's shoulder to help. If the words she was writing in her journal were visible to Mark with how close she was sitting to him Mark hadn't taken the opportunity to look at them. He was so focused on looking mostly just at Nettie and then at the suroundings behind Nettie so it didn't seem like he was looking at her all the time. Plus the times he would blush Mark was more looking at the back of his own hands resting on his knees than at the Journal. Curiously the young Ravenclaw wondered if she wrote about him. He hoped only good things. They had only ever had good experiences together so there was no way he was rubbing her the wrong way. Nope.
Did she have to say it like that. "Well yeah um...sure. Or just a normal platonic boat ride too." Mark's face was a full shade of pink now. "Right so we should definitely go out on the boat." he twiddled his thumbs together and looked behind Nettie. "Not now I mean. Later. Like maybe in a couple of years or something."
It was then that he put his eyes back on Nettie and noticed the look of horror on her face and then he looked over to the side of the boat as he heard the plopping noise and the shape of a book slowly sinking out of sight. This was all happening so quickly now. Nettie jumping up, the boat rocking and then her hand on his shoulder....her hand was on his...shoulder she was touching him. He was so flustered from her touch and scared that the boat would flip on them.
Think Mark think. Do something now. Quickly run through your options right now. Unfortunately the only thing that seemed to stand out among all scenarios was his sister screaming to jump overboard. So...taking Netties hand from his shoulder he looked to the water as his only escape, and the Second year carefully flopped back-first into the Lake waters. |

Old Bartholomew was was swimming casually along in his own thoughts when some commotion above his head caught his attention. He slipped out a tentacle just in time as something sunk by him and grabbed it up. Swimming up to the surface, the old giant squid broke the surface next to the kids in the boat raising his tentacle with the journal in the air as he wondered. "Does this paper thingy belong to one of yous?"

and he figured if anything being In The Water right now after Nettie lost her book. It would help him to help her. Even if his original intentions to be In The Water was to find a way to escape these weird and awkward feelings he was having.
He flipped around and kicked a little bit down before seeing something HUGE.....HUGE begin to raise in front of him. Mark submerged from In The Water and paddled back towards the boat and bumped into it hard as the Giant Squid came out. Mark paddling In The Water next to the boat just paddled In The Water with his mouth gaping open sometimes swallowing lake water having to spit it out.
...Wow....maybe being In The Water was a bad idea. He looked up toward Nettie. "I-it's her's" He said totally shocked and in awe |

| *too lazy to quote sorry* curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog ...WHAT?! "Oh my gosh, MARK!" Nettie cried. He'd just completely collapsed into the water! Was he trying to get her journal back? Or had he passed out for some reason? So many thoughts. He was going to DROWN trying to get her journal back! He could swim, right?? Because she could swim, but she didn't think she was strong enough to drag him back to the dock.
Arms out, trying not to follow him in to the water and fall in with him, she tried to catch her balance and toppled backwards, but thankfully that was backwards on to the dock.
Then, quite suddenly, the Giant Squid was there, holding her journal. Eyes wide, she jumped forward and grabbed the soggy thing out of his tentacle. "That's mine!" she exclaimed really quickly.
She looked back at Mark, who was thankfully alive and not drowning at the bottom of the lake. "Are you ok?! What happened?!" she asked in shock.

The soggy paper thingy belonged to the girl that grabbed it from his tentacle with a loud noice that he desciphered as happiness and thus said "You're welcome." Why did young humans always have so loud voices? Turning to look at the boy still in the water the giant squid added on to the girl's questions "You're we'ren't trying to catch a mermaid or something right."

| Me no quoting either. Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right. He was fully jealous of the Giant Squid.
It was his chance to get Nettie's journal. To further their friendship and become closer. He continued to paddle in the water looking up toward him. He was pretty massive. The tentacles even reminded him a bit of the Whomping Willow's limbs. If those decided to come crashing down on him he was a goner. So he would not express his grievances toward Bartholomew. Nope.
He swam over to the dock where he saw Nettie now leaning back against. Maybe she was just as startled by the Giant Squid as he was. "No..no I'm good. I can swim." He responded as he tried to reach up toward the docks edge but the water's surface was a bit far from there still. He couldn't quite reach. Still he tried. "I was just...uh" reach...no luck. Reach again. his fingers grazed the edge and he was pretty sure he got a splinter just now but still no grasp on the docks. "Nettie's book fell into the water. I was gonna get it for her."
Maybe if he said that it would impress the older Ravenclaw girl with whom he had a crush on?
He continued to paddle in the water. |

Looking over at the Professor he had followed out onto the grounds, and then at one of the students who had courageously said they would take the boat house, he nodded his head towards her. “I can go.” Surely Dragon burns were worse than the pink fuzzies. Right?
Eh. Guess he’d find out. Nodding again, but this time specifically at the student he gave her his name. You know. Manners and team work… Or something. “Name’s Sloane.” Heading over to the boathouse was much less anxiety provoking with Sloane. Someone from the Ministry. An adult. "Hello," she said, once he introduced himself. "I'm Hanna." She looked towards their destination and made sure the cages were still there. She felt much better without O'Hara here. At least there was someone with her who... hopefully meant no harm. "What do you do at the Ministry?" she asked.
