Chapter One: Introduction to Arithmancy


The word ‘Arithmancy’ is derived from two Greek words – arithmos (meaning number) and manteia (meaning divination); as such, Arithmancy is the branch of magic studying the occult meanings of numbers as a means of divining their influence on human life. Arithmancy can be thought of as the science of number energies, with each number having its own vibratory influence. Studying what these numbers mean in relation to your birth name and birth date gives a detailed portrait of who you are and what your potentials and challenges are. Think of it as a convenient map for your life!

The science of names and numbers originated in the ancient cultures of Greece, China, Rome and Egypt, but the acknowledged birth of Arithmancy is credited to Pythagoras, a sixth-century B.C.E. Greek philosopher, mathematician, and mystic, who is historically known as “the father of numbers.” Pythagoras, though born in Greece on the island of Samos, spent the greater part of his life in Croton, Calabria in Southern Italy, where he established a school founded on numerous strong beliefs, one of which was that all life could be predicted and measured in rhythmic patterns or cycles because everything was related to mathematics. He believed that the higher an object’s vibration, the more spirit force it contained, hence the more positive its nature. Likewise, the lower an object’s vibration, the less force and more negative its action. When taken all together, the vibration of everything in the universe creates an absolute, undivided unity. These beliefs led to his system of Arithmancy, in which the numbers 1 through 9 are symbolic representations of the nine stages of the human life cycle. (See Chapter Two)

Although the term was not used in Pythagoras’s time to describe him or his pupils, the term currently used to describe those studying or practicing Arithmancy is an ‘Arithmancer.’ One particular Arithmancer of great historical importance is Bridget Wenlock, who in the 1200s discovered the magical properties of the number seven.

There are currently two major branches/methods of practicing Arithmancy in existence – the Pythagorean (Agrippan) Method and the Chaldean Method. The major distinction between these systems is the presence of the number 9. While the Pythagorean System uses the number 9 to represent letters, the Chaldean System excludes this number completely. We will be working with the Pythagorean Method ONLY.

In the Pythagorean Number System, the letters A-Z are assigned numerical values 1-9 as follows:

The Life Path Number
The Life Path Number is an element of the core that tells you both the road you will follow throughout your life and the talents and abilities that will help you along this road. This number tells you what you can depend upon to find success in the world. Note that while other people may share the same number, it is the combination of all your numbers that will explain how to proceed down this road of life.

Finding Your Life Path Number: Add together the month, day, and year you were born using the addition method of reducing first, then adding together.

What Your Life Path Number Reveals About You:

ONE (1): Your path will take you down the road to independence, and you'll learn its benefits standing on your own two feet and becoming a strong individual. Once you've honed these traits, you move to the next level - leadership. You're a born leader and your path in life will present you with many opportunities to demonstrate your ability. The Expression/Destiny Number
The Expression Number, also known as the Destiny or Character Number, is an element of the Core that describes your life's purpose, what you must live up to in this lifetime, your opportunities for success, the qualities and manner of living you must develop, what you are destined for, the target you are aiming for in life, and the kind of work that would be a natural expression of your Life Path.

Finding Your Expression/Destiny Number: Using the full name listed on your birth certificate, lay out your name and assign the appropriate number to each letter using the chart given in Chapter Two of this text. Figure each name separately, then add the reduced total of each name - first, middle(s), and last, then reduce that number to its single digit root number.

What Your Destiny Number Reveals About You:

ONE (1): Your mission in life is to cultivate the self and to become a leader. Your purpose in life is to be indomitable, take the initiative, be independent, original, innovative and take charge - all to develop your sense of self, your will, and your determination. Bridge Numbers indicate the methods by which you can increase the compatibility and integration of your individual core numbers. These numbers serve to bridge the gap between the Life Path and Expression/Destiny number, as well as the Heart's Desire/Soul Urge and Personality number.

Life Path/Expression (Destiny) Bridge
The Life Path/Expression Bridge Number details how you can make your talents, strengths, and specific abilities (Expression number) more easily applicable and fitting the needs of your main lesson(s) and expected avenue of growth (Life Path).

Heart's Desire(Soul Urge)/Personality Bridge
The Heart's Desire/Personality Bridge number explains how you can make your deeper self - your needs and desires, your true nature - more aligned with the part of your personality others tend to recognize when they meet you. With a little exaggeration, you could say that your Personality number is somewhat like your mask. It is the more superficial you; a protective shield and a camouflage of the deeper you. The Subconscious Self Number reflects the confidence and security you have in your personal competence, as well as in your capacity to deal with sudden situations by correctly assessing the event and responding appropriately.

Finding Your Subconscious Self Number: Using the full name listed on your birth certificate, lay out your name and assign the appropriate number to each letter using the chart given in Chapter Two of this text. Nine-Year Cycles
A numerological cycle is a nine-year cycle that occurs repeatedly in one's lifetime, but with a different theme ruling the cycle each time. The philosophy behind this is that all experiences in our lifetime are symbolized in the numbers 1 through 9. Your life is operating on repeated nine-year cycles, with every year having a number, and each number having a particular meaning. This meaning is your theme that year (called your Personal Year: see chapter nineteen for details). In nine years you will have finished a specific cycle, which also has a specific lesson to be learned.

See Chapter One for the unique symbolic meanings that correspond to evolution of a person's life in nine stages. Remember, we all move through the cycle of numbers 1 through 9, again and again throughout our lives.

The Universal Year
The Universal Year Number is the actual year we are in, or in other words, the calendar year. If the year were 3002, all of the planet Earth would operate under the 5, indicating a time of change.

Finding the Universal Year:
To determine the Universal Year, just add the numbers together. For the example year 2026, add the single digits 2+0+2+6 = 10. Reduce 10 and you will find it is a 1 (1+0=1). This means the whole planet is functioning under the vibration of the number 1 Universal Year. Also, because this 1 came from the number 10, which is a karmic number, and is written 10/1, representing both the full value of the 10 and its reduced number 1 (1+0). Therefore, we can say the Universal Year 2026 is a 10/1 year, a year of karmic rebirth and a time of new beginning without the burden of previous karmic debt.

In order to assess the meaning of each Universal Year, refer to the qualities of each number listed in Chapter Two (and don't forget to look for karmic numbers!)

The Power of the Zero
The number zero represents an energy that's unformed and bursting with potential and therefore, should not be ignored. The 0 is full and empty at the same time and is symbolic of an open channel to higher forces. When you have a 0 behind a number, this magnifies the number ahead of it. If, as an example, you have a 30th birthday, the 0 magnifies the 3. This birthday might emphasize learning to speak your truth, express yourself, and make good friendships.

Your Personal Year Number is a number that describes what is happening for you, personally, this year. Each year has a number and brings with it an energy that vibrates to or resonates with that number. If you understand how to read this energy by knowing the number of your year, you can direct your affairs for the best possible result. The Personal Year starts on January of any year, and runs through the entire 12 months. Each Personal Year has a theme, so you'll have nine Personal Year themes in a cycle. Each year has both an identity of its own and certain demands. Your Personal Year Number is one of the most significant numbers in your life, so it is worthwhile to devote some time toward getting to know your Personal Year Number and what it means.

In summary, the Personal Year number tells you where to focus your energy for each year. The Personal Year Number indicates what you must face and accomplish to live in harmony with the natural flow of the year.

Finding Your Personal Year Number:
The formula for calculating the Personal Year number is:
Personal Year Number = month of birth + day of birth + current calendar year

FIVE (5): This is a year of personal transition, a time of change in attitude, work, residence and direction. Traveling is favorable during this year and you may find yourself doing it often. Because the 5 is curious, you may find yourself exploring metaphysics, investigating some new topic or taking classes. It is time for you to take some risks and make big changes in your life. Now is the time to move, switch careers, or try unconventional things you haven't yet tried. Be curious and investigate new things of interest to you.

SIX (6): This is the year for elderly parents, in which you'll be needed by your family more this year than any other year. Major Cycles are a predictive tool, significantly influencing our approach to life and shedding light on our destiny. There are three cycles, each with its own particular theme. The number of your cycle tells of the circumstances, terms and lessons you'll need to meet that will propel you down your path (Life Path Number) and aid you in achieving your destiny (Destiny Number).

Finding Your Major Cycles:
First Major Cycle: A formative cycle that governs approximately the first 28 years of your life. Theme found in the reduced number of the month you were born.
Second Major Cycle: A productive cycle that governs approximately the middle years of your life. Theme found in the reduced number of the day you were born.
Third Major Cycle: A harvest cycle that governs the later years of your life. Theme found in the reduced number of the year you were born.

What Your Major Cycles Reveal About You:

The Pinnacles
The Pinnacles are a predictive indicator, a set of numbers to lead you to your greatest accomplishment. These numbers speak of the journey ahead and direct the way for knowing what can be achieved in a particular period of time. In other words, the Pinnacle Numbers reveal your potential for achievement and success and show what is possible to attain at a given period in life.

Finding Your Pinnacles:
Each of us has four Pinnacle Numbers, each representing a distinct period in our lives that is governed by a particular discrete theme. Each number shows the attitude and effort needed during the specified period, and all four work together to help us work out our destinies. Because they're based on nine-year cycles, Pinnacles can help you learn at exactly what age you should be doing what. Each of the four Pinnacles has a distinct meaning and a distinct length, with the first and last being the longest.

Here are the formulas for finding your four Pinnacle Numbers:

EIGHT (8): An eight in a Pinnacle position dictates a time for learning to handle the business world and any type of authority, and from that to discover your own sense of personal power. You will learn about money, power, authority, as well as the essentials of organization, leadership, responsibility, efficiency and management (particularly of financial matters). During an 8 Pinnacle, your judgment will be repeatedly tested during your opportunities to manage business and further your career. Recognition for your achievements are significant under this number. Home life may be of less importance under this Pinnacle, but that may be necessary to learn the important lesson - become your own authority and trust your true power.

NINE (9): This Pinnacle is known for emotional crises and you'll be expected to show a significant amount of compassion, tolerance, and love, while inspiring and uplifting others with your wisdom and caring nature. The 9 Pinnacle is a time for maturation and working through your emotions. This is not an easy Pinnacle because it is difficult to be loving and tolerant all the time; however, these things will have to be learned of this Pinnacle becomes one of great disappointment. Develop your global consciousness, intuition, and love for humanity during this time. As a First Pinnacle, this may be a time of early losses that bring early maturity. In the middle Pinnacles, this is a time of giving back to the world. As the last Pinnacle, it's a time of completion and material and spiritual wealth. During any position, you will be required to forget the self and develop into a true humanist.

MASTER NUMBER ELEVEN (11/2): This Master Number Pinnacle, like any other, may also be reduced to its lower vobration, the 2, and experienced as merely that - the two Pinnacle. It is not until working at the level of the 11, the higher vibration of spiritual and philosophical rather than material, that you'll address the unique attributes of this number. The 11 Pinnacle indicates a challenging time of extreme intuition and sensitivity, experiencing intense revelations, enormous personal and spiritual growth, and a compelling sense of being different. In this Pinnacle, you possess a message to deliver to people and a desire to inspire those around you with that message.

MASTER NUMBER TWENTY-TWO (22/4): The fairly rare 22/4 Pinnacle usually only arises after having two previous Pinnacles of 11/2. MASTER NUMBER THIRTY-THREE (33/6): A 33/6 Pinnacle, like the 22/4, is fairly rare and usually occurs after two preceding Pinnacles of 11/2 and 22/4. The Challenges
The Challenges are a predictive indicator, a set of numbers which outline for you what it is that you must face to reach the highest peak of your Pinnacle. Think of your Challenge Numbers as doors through which you must advance in order to ascend the spiral staircase of your personal development. Challenge Numbers are not meant to be overcome, but rather indicate what you must become.

Finding Your Challenges:
Your four Challenge Numbers go right along with your Pinnacle Numbers and cover the same years. They are found in your date of birth just like the Pinnacles, but instead of adding the numbers in your date of birth, the Challenges are found by subtracting them.

Here are the formulas for finding your four Challenge Numbers:
First Challenge Number = day of birth - month of birth
Second Challenge Number = year of birth - day of birth
Third Challenge Number = Second Challenge Number - First Challenge Number
Fourth Challenge Number = year of birth - month of birth


What Your Challenges Reveal About You:

ONE (1): When 1 is your Challenge, you're learning to stand up for yourself, be true to your own ideas and beliefs, be self-reliant, and find the courage to lead. You'll face test after test to determine if you've ultimately learned to stand firm and not compromise yourself. When the 1 is the First Challenge, you're learning to recognize that you have a self; while in the other Challenge positions, it means you're learning to remain true to this self and have self-confidence.

TWO (2): One of the most common challenges, the number two stresses sensitivity to all human relations. One aspect of the two, as the symbol for duality, is that it requires constant vigilance to stay balanced in the juggle between two seemingly opposing forces. You will in time learn the balance point and how to maintain it by being sensitive and living in harmony with yourself and with others. The negative aspect of the 2 can deal with fear, timidity, or lack of self-confidence. A potentially painful Challenge, there may be a battle with subordination or unwarranted consideration paid to what others think. The value of this Challenge is that you become sensitive to the emotions and needs of others without sacrificing your own needs at the same time.

THREE (3): When 3 is your Challenge, you're learning to recognize your emotions and speak from the heart. Learn that your words have a significant influence on your life as you may be critical with your words. The negatives of the 3 must be overcome, so work to abandon superficiality, aggrandizement, gossip, conceitedness, and speaking just to hear yourself talk. Under the 3 Challenge, work to use your creative energy to form a loving, positive, and joyful spirit and realize pure, unadulterated happiness.

FOUR (4): When 4 is your Challenge, you're learning the significance of discipline, orderliness, practicality, and hard work. Learn how to work within the boundaries, limitations and restrictions of this difficult challenge and learn how to set boundaries with others. Learn to suppress impatience, inflexibility, narrow-mindedness, and self-righteousness.

FIVE (5): When 5 is your Challenge, you're learning to change and become more flexible. The love of changing rule can make others grow impatient and restless and desire freedom from rules and restrictions. Take a risk and loosen up despite the fear and confusion that change can bring. Learn to release yourself from restricting conduct that are limiting your creative energy.

SIX (6): When 6 is your Challenge, you're learning accountability for others and possibly experiencing burden from family obligations. Learn to attend to others and strike a balance between honoring your commitments to family and to yourself - a balance, meaning that you can't avoid either and must attend to both. Learn to avoid codependency and discover when loyalty, obedience, and the desire to be in charge of the household have stepped overboard. There is a tendency for this Challenge to be too stubborn and set in your opinions, so learn to transfer the energy from the negative to the positive qualities of the 6 - warmth, beauty, and nurturing.

SEVEN (7): When 7 is your Challenge, you're learning to overcome feelings of loneliness and isolation by using your energy to meditate and contemplate the meaning of life. This Challenge is one of the most serious times in your life. Learn to realize that your inner self is looking for experiences that will allow your personal growth. Learn to distinguish reality from incorrect knowledge and false views. Be more honest and true to yourself, connect to others, and learn to listen to yourself in order to encourage your ability to analyze and observe the world around you. Enhance your intuitive skills, examine philosophical and metaphysical material, and learn the universal laws of nature.

EIGHT (8): When 8 is your Challenge, you're learning to look beyond material possessions and money to the true meaning of life. Incorporate integrity and morality in your manner of doing business in the world. If you misuse your power, improperly claim authority, or abdicate your power, you will only put off sucess and advancement. You need to stop giving away your power, develop where you're meant to take back your power and empower others. In other words, neither defer your rightful authority nor overexaggerate your authority and dominate others. Lead when you are supposed to lead and in the manner expected of you.

NINE (9): There is no 9 Challenge possible.

ZERO (0): Also called the Cipher Challenge, it stands for all or nothing. The symbol of the circle, it can be full and empty at the same time. You have full free will to and choice to form your own world as one filled with love, compassion, integrity, vision, and to do great works. When governed by the 0 Challenge, do not take this time lightly. Nurture your desire to make the world a better place in consideration of your Destiny Number and the higher laws of universal order. The person with a 0 Challenge is said to have an 'old soul,' especially if you carry a master number as his or her Soul Number. You are expected to make choices that honor a higher awareness and foster spiritual growth on the material plane.

MASTER NUMBER ELEVEN (11/2): Learn to honor the demands of both the 11 and the 2. Constant vigilance is necessary to remain balanced emotionally and physically. Step up to the leadership role of the 11 using spiritual principles and recognize all the opportunities of the 2 - lessons of partnership and relationship.

MASTER NUMBER TWENTY-TWO (22/4): At this time, arithmancers do not acknowledge the 22/4 as a Challenge Number. Instead, the 22 is reduced to the 4 and read as a 4 Challenge.

MASTER NUMBER THIRTY-THREE (33/6): The 33/6 Challenge holds the goal of healing oneself and others using spiritual principles, such as teaching love and understanding the responsibility of love. Doing so will lead you through any Challenge this Master Number brings.

The Balance Number
The Balance Number provides you with the guidance on how best to deal with difficult or threatening situations. People experience different internal responses to life's challenges. Some withdraw from difficult situations to think them through; others withdraw from their emotions, to try and keep themselves from feeling anything. Some explode with emotions, but allow the explosion to pass quickly. Others linger with their feelings, holding on to them well past the time they should have let them go. The Balance Number attempts to help us learn new and more effective methods of handling our world and the problems we confront.

Finding Your Balance Number:
Your Balance Number is found by adding the numerical value of your initials of your full name at birth and reducing it to a single-digit or until a Master number is encountered.

What Your Balance Number Reveals About You:

ONE (1): Draw strength from yourself but be more willing to share your troubles with friends and family. You can be a loner in the face of problems. This can isolate you during troubled times. Be open to the advice of others. This will widen your perspective on the problem and give you new information on which to base your approach.
Strength, creativity, and courage are the arms with which you will win the war.

TWO (2): Use tact and diplomacy. Be less emotional. Be courageous in your approach to the solution you seek, rather than backing away from problem because you fear confrontation. Work hard to diffuse tension; your innate talent is to find a mutually satisfying solution to all. You are willing to compromise. Be more optimistic and lighthearted. You may become too personally attached to the solution you seek, thus failing to see that the outcome can be beneficial to all concerned.

FOUR (4): Try to have perspective and a more lighthearted attitude toward emotionally-charged issues. Control your anger. Discipline is your strength. Also, look at the larger picture and the need for compromise. Your sense of justice must be elevated to another level where such virtues as forgiveness, compassion, and deep understanding are the guiding lights. A practical approach to these ideals is to try to put yourself in the shoes of the person with whom you are in conflict. There are always more angles to a problem than you tend to acknowledge.

FIVE (5): Try to focus on your problem, rather than avoiding it. You may try to avoid the issue by indulging your senses to keep from feeling the pain of a conflict. Be careful not to escape into food, bad habits, and illegal actions. You are capable of finding a highly-creative solution to any situation the minute you put your mind to it. The answer lies well within your grasp.

SIX (6): Your strength lies with understanding people and the underlying conditions of a conflict. But you can rely too heavily on friends and family to provide you solace instead of handling the situation directly and responsibly. You may be too likely to retreat to the good feelings provided by people not involved in your situation. Responsibility is the issue here. You helped create the situation in the first place, and are an essential part of the solution. Accept your role.

SEVEN (7): You retreat into some safe haven within yourself and hope you will not have to deal with the issue at hand. Yet, the clarity and analytical abilities of your mind are sufficient to provide you with insight into the problem, and a clear path to its solution. You have to work at confronting yourself and the issues you face unemotionally and calmly. You can be engulfed in the emotional aspects of the issue, which clouds your mind and prevents you from using your clarity to find an answer. Get past the emotion and you will find an answer.

EIGHT (8): Use your considerable power in a balanced way. You may use power in a manipulative way, rather than confront people on principle. Use your power in a higher way, namely, by accepting personal responsibility for the issue and its solution. You have enormous creativity and the leadership to find an answer to almost any problem. Try not to force your own solution upon groups, but include their concerns and ideas in the larger solution that you can bring about. Learn to use power for the good of all.

NINE (9): You will find your solutions by empathizing with the concerns of others. You have a gift for understanding a wide variety of people and seeing the broader picture. But too often you retreat to aloofness, a kind of Ivory Tower, in which you regard yourself as an aristocrat, above the masses. You will find your solutions by coming down to the practical reality where people live. It is in giving that you will receive.
