For the first time this term, tiny ice crystals can be seen falling from the sky as you pass the windows on your way to the Ancient Runes classroom. Starting with just a few flecks at breakfast, by now the snow is steadily falling. This of course impacted the temperature in the corridors, cooling the air slightly until you happen to be passing by the torches scattered down the corridor. Winter certainly has finally arrived.
The moment you get to the doorway to the classroom, it is likely that the moderate heating charm that has been casted is not the first thing that is noticed. Rather more noticeable is that all of the desks have all been pushed against the walls of the room. Needless to say, this is not the typical arrangement that students of this class are used to as the desks are normally grouped in small clusters. If you're already curious as to why this is, then your professor will quite pleased with that.
Speaking of your professor, perhaps even more intriguing is the sight of him. Instead of casually standing out in the corridor welcoming everyone in, Professor Flamel is wandering about the classroom. A number of lit wax candles, similar to the ones seen in the Great Hall, are gently bobbing up and down at chest-height. Without a word and just a simple wave of his hand, a candle levitates from the box in his hand, lights up, and joins the fray.
"Come in, come in," he says, hearing footsteps coming from the entrance into the room, as his hand makes another hand motion and another candle moves out of the box and into position. "Go find a candle to stand beside and have your rune stones at hand. We will be getting started shortly."
OOC: Welcome to the first OOC Ancient Runes lesson of the term! Before posting, please familiarise yourself with the classroom rules and also keep in mind that this is not the first lesson that your characters have had with Flamel this term. The lesson has begun, so feel free to jump in. ^___^

Derf was honestly tempted to dip his finger into the wax pooling around the wick...but they could maybe NEED that for what they were doing today so...probably best not to. It was also pretty distracting watching the way the flame danced about in the air, so much so that he nearly missed when class began.
Isa would always remind him one one Valerie Gray, both in her use of it during the IMPS as well as her general persona and reputation of being the Ice Queen of Illvermorny. He wondered what she was up to now. Was she happy? His eyes glazed over a little bit as his mind wandered, but i came back soon enough thanks to the voices of his classmates.
Dorian's answer, of course, being the first one to come to mind...and his bright blues moves right on back to the flame. Were they...going to learn out to ignite and extinguish with runes? That seemed almost too obvious with the rune Kenaz...but shooting little icy blasts at the flames to put them out and then ignite them again...that also sounded pretty darn neat, you know?
Um um...but what could he ADD to the discussion? Hand up, he began pulling at straws in his memory a bit.
"Isa is, um, a rune of control...and like...self-control. Even looks like the letter 'I' for the self, you know? Kenaz too is sorta about control...but controlled energy and transformation, like phoenix fire. Both runes together, well, reckon you could say they bring balance? These two kinds of control..and the juxtaposition of hot and cold, fire and ice, like others are saying."

Tina positively beamed when Professor Flamel greeted her in French. She was sorely tempted to ask him about his day and try to strike up a conversation in French, but she restrained herself. Since she left Beauxbatons, she didn't hear her native tongue much anymore. Hearing Flamel speak to her made her miss her home even more! Her longing quickly gave way to anger at a certain Beauxbatons prefect. If it hadn't been for Cassius Rosier's betrayal, she would still be at her old school where she belonged!
She took a deep breath to calm her rising emotions so she could focus on the lesson. Runes now, rage later. Tina blinked confusedly at the words on the board. Uhh... she couldn't think of a single thing to say about the runes, and not for lack of trying. She read her textbook just like she was supposed to, but she could never get the information to stick. It was like everything she knew about runes just leaked out of her head!
Tina kept quiet for now and listened to her classmates, hoping something they said would jog her memory. So if Kenaz represented fire, did that explain the candles? But what about Isa? Were they going to use that to put the candles out or something? She had no clue! Tina bit her lip, searching her mind for any tidbit of information about the two runes that hadn't been said. After a few minutes, she timidly raised her hand. "I-isn't Kenaz associated with knowledge and creativity?" she said, trying to recall more information as she spoke. "and Isa... is supposed to help with concentration?"

Yes, she actually had been wondering that. Also, the candles, but the runes explained it, at least a little. The 'fire' rune. Now, what did she know about those two runes that hadn't already been said? "They both have to do with creation and rebirth." Sounded legit, anyway.
Also, she was still scratching, but more discreetly now. Didn't want to be a distraction, after all. Not like that, anyway.

Jackson listened as their setting was explained. He had assumed the other students just went with it too, but he could imagine some of the younger kids were probably still blown away when professors changed things up a bit. Jackson eyed the runes listed and went through his notes. “Isa is easy to remember since it sounds like ‘ice’ already, and represents a calm state, like in yoga or something. It’s the opposite of Kenaz, which represents fire and more ambitious in nature. Anyway, our reading describes them as the yin to each other’s yang.” His words were becoming jumbled, which tended to happen when he was trying to discuss runes. He had to admire Runes professors for trying to explain it.

Max gulped, Adam’s apple bobbing nervously in his neck. Before he could worm (hah) his way out of it and insist he had absolutely no idea what she was on about and that she’d got all of this wrong, class had started.
Did he offer up an answer of his own? Nope. Sorry Professor Flamel, but he was too busy keeping an eye on the Gryffindor who was out to get his blood.

Rylee remained quiet as Professor Flamel began his lesson. Her attention was pulled onto the board where the words Isa and Kenaz were clearly written. Now what did she know about them both? Much more than she had in previous years if she was being honest. Only not enough to really expand on what those around her had already said.
It didn't much matter to the fourth year that she was still standing about beside a floating candle. All that mattered was she was able to pull out a sheet of parchment, along with her quill and write down some notes. "Isa helps you to be able to control your own energy. Kenaz helps with controlling fire for illumination and warmth," she offered raising her hand. Once her answer had been given it was write back to taking down notes.

With all her privileges taken away, Charlie had plenty of time to keep up with her readings.
She would normally be more excited about learning new things... but Hogwarts wasn't being so kind yet. A month of detention and other things would give one that impression.*
Biting her lip in a futile attempt to clear her head, Charlie rose her hand and cleared her throat. "I'm pretty sure Isa means, um... coldness. But more in a personal way than an... Ice way. In other words, I guess it means focusing on yourself.”
Oh, and Kenaz.... “Kenaz represents enlightenment, in a way.... It’s light in the darkness, both metaphorically and literally.”

But he HAD read up on some of his textbooks and had tried to learn some more so he was sure he could answer any questions asked to them!
The Ravenclaw automatically moved aside when the professor walked inbetween the students to stand at the front and his blue eyes looked the blackboard where the runes Isa and Kenaz had been written
"Isa is associated with ice and Kenaz is associated with fire" he said after raising his hand.
As soon as the question was asked, a number of hands rose into the air. Flamel's friendly blue eyes fell first on the fifth year Ravenclaw, who was quick to mention what both runes were associated with. "Right you are, Mr. Katharos," the professor said with a nod of his head.

Oh! But that one! He knew that one! Isa. An easy one. Just a line, really, so difficult to misread, and sounded like 'ice', which was exactly what it meant.
Abra opened his mouth to say just that when... Katharos beat him to it. Well then. Abra paused for a moment, then raised his hand, being careful not to knock any candles. "With their magical uses, you can use Isa to sort of stop things. So you sort of freeze them in their tracks, like ice? I don't know if it freezes things by hardening them, but that would be cool too." Oh. Haha. Cool. That was funny. "Kenaz helps get rid of anxieties, I think." This stuck in his mind because of reasons.
After, the man's eyes shifted over to the Gryffindor Prefect. As the boy spoke, Flamel's gaze did not waver and he remained very focused on what the seventh year had to say. A smile played on his lips at the pun, whether it was intentional or not, what was stated.
"Thank you, Mr. Botros, and you are indeed correct. Isa can be used to stop things or serve as a sort of blockage. How effect that is, though, depends on the amount of concentration you have as well as the amount of experience with the rune." He paused for a moment to let that sink in a bit before providing a comment about the boy's thoughts on Kenaz. "And what you say about Kenaz is very true as well. Though, of course, one could argue that Isa has the potential to do the same if used for medication and calming purposes."

He heard the others mention their general properties. "Well the Kenaz can help with studying." he flipped back to his reading notes, "and Isa requires that you stay calm." at least that was what he thought he remembered reading he honestly wasn't too sure anymore.
The next person he saw with their hand raised was the Slytherin Captain. Flamel waited as the boy flipped through the notes that he had taken before speaking himself. "Well said, Mr. Dooley. Imagine just how useful the combination of these woulds would be for everyone with those uses in mind."

Flamel nodded at the next student that spoke. "Thank you, Mr. Mitsue. Isa, just like any other rune, can reinforce other runes that are minded together with it. But, at the same time, it can also be a hinderance against others. That is why using runes with a clear purpose is important."
A soft smile was sent his way after the confession about not knowing much about Kenaz. Considering the boy was a first year and Ancient Runes wasn't exactly the easiest of subjects, he couldn't fault him for that. Plus Flamel knew that others would have plenty to say about the rune to fill up the Ravenclaw's brain with new knowledge.

Wait a minute... Was Maxton Carden coming to stand by here? To say she was surprised would be an understatement. He was a squirrel of a boy and typically opted to sit all by himself. And as far away from Zor as possible, btw. The Gryffindor turned, hearing him whisper to her. "....." And that's when realization struck her.
The Gryffindor felt RAGE shoot through her veins, as she narrowed her eyes and him. "You're a dead man, Carden." Because, yes, she fully understood what he was talking about. He was the culprit. She should've known.
There wasn't much else Zoryn could say or do, however, as their Professor began to address the class for the start of their lesson. Isa and Kenaz? Zoryn sort of knew stuff about these Runes as she was now in her seventh year and had gained some knowledge throughout her time here. Being confined to her dormitory for an entire month also meant that she had actually studied for once in her forsaken life. And so, yes, she knew things.
Did that mean she'd put effort into her answer?
"Both have two syllables."
Absolutely not.
He didn't specify that it had to be runic knowledge. He basically opened the floor up to ANYTHING. Syllables were a thing she knew about them. Mhm.
The eye narrowing had gone missed by Flamel. Truth be told, he had a lesson to begin and it was likely that his back was turned to the pair when he made his way up to the front. So, by the time he was facing them all, everything seemed ordinary.
But did he expect an ordinary answer from the likes of Zoryn Spinnet? No. In fact, he expected quite the opposite from her. Sometimes it was amusing, other times it left him honestly wondering how the girl made it to her seventh year.
A deadpan silence occurred after her answer before Flamel finally replied with a simple "Thank you, Miss Spinnet."

She listened to what was being said around her, and got stuck on Dorian's answer. Ice and Fire. She raised her hand and said "In uh N-Norse mythology, they believe fire and ice coming together caused the creation of the universe." Which... well, was that what she knew about the runes themselves, or just the ice and fire elements?
It did not take long for him to call on the fourth year Ravenclaw after the previous student. An approving nod was sent in her direction. "Excellent, Miss Newton. Both elements are believed to have been the cause of creation. Frost and flames collided and the first melted the ice, which then formed Ymir, the first of the giants, and Audhumla, a cow. And so the origins of the Cosmos began."

Eventually Flamel notice the raised hand of the Head Boy. Patient and listening as the boy gave his answer, the professor's head nodded slowly. Control and balance was exactly what the two runes were about, granted their effects were polar opposites of each other.
"Thank you, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne. And you are most certainly correct about both of these runes in particular honing in on control and how the two, when used properly, can balance each other out. We will be practising with that notion soon enough."

You are correct in providing those more divinatory meanings and magical uses of the runes. Kenaz is a rune of illumination, which can invoke an aide in forming new ideas and insight. Isa is also a creative force, though it is more focused on clearing ones mind before moving onward."

Another hand was raised, which meant the professor's gaze shifted once more. As the Hufflepuff gave her answer, Flamel nodded. For a moment he paused, wondering if she was going to add more details to her fairly broad answer.
No other words coming from her mouth, the man picked up where she left off. "Thank you for emphasizing that, Miss Calrissian. Both runes share the common attribute of creation and rebirth, both in the physical and mental sense. Physically we have the Norse myth of creation, and one could make a case for this also being represented through winter and spring. Then, mentally, there is the creation and control of ideas, action, and the self."

"Correct," Flamel replied after the Prefect finished sharing his answer. "I like how you mentioned that Isa is the Yang to Kenaz's Yang. This just simply means, as you suggested when mentioned what the runes represent, that they are opposites of each other. While they may be opposites, they both, however, are able to interact and have influence in a balanced way."

Looking around the room for more raised hands, Flamel did happen to notice the Slytherin Prefect who ... seemed distracted? The professor let a cough escape his mouth as a cue for a certain someone to focus on the lesson. The Ancient Runes NEWT wasn't exactly a cake walk, and it would be absolutely dreadful if one were not focused when the material was being learned.

As for Kenaz, controlling fire is definitely part of it as is sparking and controlling new ideas or inspiration."
He hoped that everyone was starting to pick up on both runes having multiple uses, depending on one's purpose and intent.

Oh, and Kenaz.... “Kenaz represents enlightenment, in a way.... It’s light in the darkness, both metaphorically and literally.”
Blue eyes locked on to the final hand that was still raised in the air. Flamel nodded at her response, rather impressed with the first year's explanation of Kenaz in particular. "Excellent, Miss Smedley, excellent." There was a brief pause before the professor continued speaking. "I think you have a great understanding of Kenaz. You've got a nice grasp on Isa as well, though keep in mind that Isa can work in multiple ways, both metaphorical and literal, as well."
After the final raised hand lowered and a response was given, Flamel hesitated for a moment, his eyes glancing from student to student (those that hadn't spoken in particular), just in case there were any additions or new information that needed to be shared with the class. Seeing no hands go up or faces indicating that they had something on their mind to say, the professor pushed himself from his perch and took a few steps forward, positioning himself beside a candle nearest to him.
"Some information about Isa and Kenaz that came up multiple times in some way were that the two are represented by ice and fire and that they are in many cases opposites of each other. Isa, ice, is a typically viewed as a rune of stillness or some sort of blocking, whereas Kenaz, fire, is a more active energy that promotes both metaphorical and literal illumination. Though the two are different, they both bring with it rebirth and control."
Eyes now glancing over at the candle, a hand reached into his pant pocket. From it he retrieved two stones and held them out for all to see, one containing the symbol of Isa and the other the symbol of Kenaz. "Today we are going to practice using both runes and invoking their physical energies, which is why I have taken the liberty of using these candles for class this morning. Right now your candles all are lit with a steady flame. You will be using Kenaz to increase the flame, followed with Isa to gradually lessen the flame until it is extinguished."
"Now, while this task may seem simple, there are a few key things that you need to keep in mind if you want successful results. First, it is necessary to harness the energies through the appropriate rune stones. Using the wrong stone will get you nowhere," Flamel stated, pausing for a moment as the chalk rose again and started writing steps on the board. "After that, you need to invoke the runes with the correct galdr. Recite the galdr multiple times to make the stone glow and invoke the rune's energies while envisioning exactly what you want to happen to the flame. You will need to do this with a considerable amount of concentration and willpower, otherwise your efforts will go to waste. All eyes on me while I demonstrate this for you all."
Holding the Kenaz stone in his dominant hand, Flamel's eyes focused on the candle. He briefly studied the flame before he started chanting, "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn." As the galdr was repeated a number of times with more concentration and intensity, the stone glowed yellow and the flame grew more and more.
Satisfied, rune stones were swapped. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i," the man chanted, causing the stone to glow black. Every time the galdr was repeated, the large flame gradually lessened. Flamel's brow furrowed, envisioning very clearly the effect he wanted the rune's energies to have on the flame. A few short moments later, the flame let out and a trail of smoke rose.
His gaze shifted from the candle to his students. Smiling he said, "Now it is your turn to give it a go. Do not worry if you don't get results the first time. Stay diligent and keep on trying. If you have questions or need some pointers, I'll be walking around while you are practicing."
OOC: We have arrived to the mini-activity/practice portion of the lesson! Huzzah! For this task, your character needs to increase the flame of the candle they are standing next to with the energies of Kenaz and then lessen the flame until it is extinguished with Isa. To do this your character needs to do the following:
Hold the correct rune stone in their dominate hand.
Chant the correct galdr until the stone glows (see above in my post).
Envision what they want runic energies to do to the flame -- first increase the flame, then decrease/extinguish it.
Focus on what they are doing with great concentration and willpower.
How quickly your character is able to complete this task and whether or not they are successful in doing so should be based on their experience with runes, their pronunciation of the galdrs, and their ability to concentrate. They can succeed, fail, be somewhere in between, cause something wrong to happen, etc. -- note there are many creative ways you can go about this task to fit their abilities and make the class fun!
Feel free to make as many posts as you like for this part of the lesson. I will be posting Flamel interacting with your characters until we move on to the next part of the lesson on Thursday, February 7th.

Hanna watched Professor Flamel get some stones from his pocket, showing Isa and Kenaz. Ice and Fire. Increasing and lessening the flames of the candle. Hanna's eyes hadn't left him as she continued to watch him demonstrate what was needed of them. It was really cool to see the stone glowing yellow, and the flame increasing in size as he chanted the galdr, demonstrating Kenaz. The repeat was performed, and the candle puffed out. Isa. It was pretty cool, even though Hanna's hopes of succeeding weren't very high.
Hanna retrieved the rune pouch from her bag and went through them to find Isa and Kenaz. It didn't take too long, and she replaced the pouch back in her bag. It was annoying when she couldn't find where she put her rune stones. She placed Isa in her left, non-dominant, hand so that she could chant the galdr with Kenaz stone in her dominant hand. Holding it in her right hand, she tried to focus on the task, concentrating, willing herself to enlarge the candle. "kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn," she said, trying to remember how the galdr went. She kept pausing to check the textbook. Clearly that wasn't going to help her concentration, and of course nothing happened. The stone didn't change, and the candle gave no movement. Nothing. She re-focused on the stone, and envisioned the candle flame getting larger. "kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn," she repeated. Still, nothing, although was that a small flicker of her candle?

Malachi listened to the others intently before focusing on the teacher, so far runes has been one of the more interesting classes he’s attended and he honestly was enjoying it. After listening to the instructions he looks at the candle with a determined look before grabbing the Kenaz rune. He repeats the chant that he had heard the professor do,”Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn" He waits for something to happen but nothing does, usually this would dampen his mood but he was determined to accomplish at least this. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn!" He says with a little more passion but still noting happens, he tilts his head as he looks at the rune in his hand. Was he doing something wrong?

Taking down the remainder of the notes as Professor Flamel spoke, Rylee only set down her parchment and quill when she was sure she had gotten down everything important. There was no cause for worry because she was indeed listening to everything the man had said. Not only that but she had stopped her note taking to watch Flamel remove the stones from his pocket and began the chanting in front of a candle flame. It was kinda cool how the flame had grown and then went out.
Reaching into her bag she easily retrieved the bag of Runes and took out both Isa and Kenaz. Ice and fire. With Kenaz kept tightly in her left hand, her dominant hand though she was able to use both and Isa in her right hand it was time to give this a try.
Focusing only on making the flame of the candle grow she began the chant, "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn." Repeating it over and over as she had seen the professor do all the while trying to keep her focus on the task. Nothing at all was happening here. The flame didn't get larger and the Rune stone in her hand wasn't glowing. Not even a faint glow was happening.
Opening her left hand and flexing her fingers a little, she closed her hand once more around the Kenaz stone. Rylee than closed her eyes, took a slow breath and let it out. One must envision what the wanted. In this case it was for the flame to grow. As she saw it clearly in her mind she opened her eyes and started the chant all over again. Slowly and clearly at first, over and over until it became like second nature. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn." Focus. Intensity.
Rylee wasn't sure how long it took or how long she had been repeating there chant but slowly there was a yellowish glow seeping out between her fingers. The candle flame flickered slightly as it grew larger. Nowhere close to how large the professors flame had gotten but this was a positive start.

Use the runes to make the flame smaller or larger? Seemed simple enough. Nettie always preferred the hands-on lessons when it came to Ancient Runes. Translating things? That was the WOOOOOORST.
Eyeing her flame, she picked up the Kenaz rune and tossed it up and down a few times in her right hand before holding on to it tightly and holding it next to the candle. She closed her eyes and began to focus on the candle, envisioning the flame getting brighter and brighter as she chanted. As she pictured it, she cleared her throat and finally began to chant.
"Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn" she recited the galdr just as the professor had, smiling as the flame started to creep upwards, growing in intensity. GRIN.
She stopped once the flame had doubled in size, and then picked up the Isa rune. Holding that one in her right hand as well, she held it next to the candle and again began to envision what she wanted to happen. She pictured the flame receding, growing dimmer and then nearly going out. Once she was ready, she began the galdr for that rune as well.
"Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i," she muttered. The flame got smaller and smaller, and she concentrated a bit harder. This time she pictured it going out completely. The flame kept getting smaller, and she felt like she was practically staring DAGGERS at the flame, before it finally went out with a small POOF.
This runes thing wasn't so hard after all!

It wasn't that he had anything against them personally or anything, they were just so difficult to remember. There were a LOT of them, and a lot of parts to them, and it was easy to get all the individual components mixed up and turned around, but unfortunately they were a major part of the subject and used to do a lot of rune magic so... he couldn't really get around that. He thought - as he rummaged through his rune stones for Isa and Kenaz, squinting at each in turn in the candlelight until he found them both - about using his textbook to help him with the galdrs, but that would be no good. He struggled with reading in a well lit room, when he wasn't trying to focus on other things, so in this situation he'd probably only end up accidentally setting the textbook alight.
Once he found the right stones, Abra dithered around a moment before putting Kenaz into his left hand, then focusing on the flame. Putting all his focus and willpower into enlarging the flame was going to be a bit of a tall order, considering he'd need to concentrate a fair bit on remembering the galdr, but he'd... try? He'd try.
"Kenaz kenaz kenaz..." Okay, that was the easy part. "... um... ke ki ka... ko ... ku..." That was almost definitely wrong, but he was just going to go with it. "... ken... kin...? Kan kon kun... ok ek ik ak uk... kaunnnnnnn... kenaz kenaz kenaz... ke ki ko ku ka... ken kin kon kun kan... ok ek ik ak uk... kaunnnnnnn..."
He kept going in this manner, but nothing happened. The rune stone didn't glow, the candle flame didn't so much as flicker, unless you counted the way Abra's anxious breathing was making it dance. How he was supposed to concentrate on growing the flame when he couldn't even remember the galdr was totally beyond him. But he tried again anyway; maybe if he got it right enough times he might remember it, at least for this exercise.
"Kenaz kenaz kenaz..." Here, Abra stopped, listening to those nearest him, to get a better idea of the right order of 'ki's and 'ko's and 'ku's. "... ku... ka... ki... ke... ko... kun... kan... kin... ken... ok ek ik ak uk... kaunnnnnnnn..." So, that was the right way round, but he was being too slow, too hesitant, focusing on the words and not the energy of the rune. And now he'd already forgotten how the galdr went again. Merlin.

Patrick listened closely as Flamel talked about getting the flames to go higher and then reduce them. He knew the reduction wouldn't be too terrible. He had somehow figured out the isa rune with Headmistress Hawthorne when she was teaching his second year. He was hopeful that he would still know what the heck he was doing.
He grabbed his Kenaz rune and placed it in his hand. Running over the galdr in his head. He thought about the flame increasing and kept that thought in his head. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz," he inhaled and started the rest of the galdr, "ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon," he thought hard about the flame increasing.
He continued the galdr knowing that the flame should be getting larger, "ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn." He repeated again watching as the flame slowly began to rise.
The candle flickered again. It wasn't rising as much as he had hoped. He repeated the galdr one more time with a vision of the flame going higher, "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn" The flame reached the level that he had hoped for and he couldn't have been happier.

Tina paid extra close attention to Professor Flamel, hoping this would be the one time the information stuck with her. So they were to make the flames rise and fall using kenaz and isa... okay, that sounded simple enough. Probably more simple than it actually was. Tina craned her neck to get a good look at the stones Flamel was using, though she already towered over half the class, and jotted down the symbols in her notebook. Shed be sure to consult her textbook too, just in case she'd written them incorrectly.
Tina copied down the steps written on the blackboard. Okay, use the correct stones, concentration and willpower... that was doable. It was the galdrs that had her internally panicking. There were so many parts to remember! Most of them just sounded like random noise, and forgetting even one syllable could throw everything off. Honestly, Tina didn't understand why she had such a hard time with galdrs. She had no trouble remembering facts and figures in other classes. The dark-haired Ravenclaw listened with rapt attention as Flamel repeated the galdrs, saying the chants over and over again in her mind in an attempt to memorize them. Just in case that didn't work (which wouldn't surprise Tina at all at this point), she wrote down what she thought she heard. She took a deep breath as the demonstration concluded. Nothing left now but to get to work...
Tina held her kenaz stone tightly in her right hand, visualizing the cnadle flames leaping higher and higher. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ke ki ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ak ek ik ok uk, kaunnnnnnnnn," she chanted, and... absolutely nothing happened. What was she doing wrong? She thumbed frantically through her textbook for answers. Was that the right stone? Yes. The right galdr? It looked like she'd mixed up a few syllables; that must be the problem! "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn," she tried again. Still nothing. She thought she saw a faint glow on her stone... or had she just imagined it?
Tina scoffed, her hand angrily clenching into a fist around her stone. Ugh! Why was this so hard?! Students younger than her were catching on faster. It was taking all the restraint she had not to throw her stone onto the ground and give up. That wouldn't accomplish anything except getting her into trouble, and points loss or a reprimand would only make her angrier. She took a few deep breaths to calm her frustration before consulting her book again. Did she say the galdr wrong again? No, she got it right that time. She guessed concentration must be the problem. She'd give it one more try. Tina concentrated with all her might until she could clearly picture roaring flames in the back of her mind. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn," she chanted slowly and carefully.
Tina glanced up, half afraid of what she might see, just in time to see her stone glow bright yellow and the flames of her candle jump higher... a little higher than she wanted, but she did it! Tina smiled, but before she could get too pleased with herself, she remembered she still had to cast isa.... great. She held her isa stone and repeated, "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, i i i i i i i i i." The chant had no effect on her candle whatsoever. What a shock... She checked her notes and textbook and saw she'd missed a whole section of the galdr. How had that happened?! She always had trouble remembering galdrs, but that was bad even for her! Focus, Tina! she told herself sternly. Okay, let's try that again with the correct galdr this time!
"Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i," Tina chanted, envisioning her candle flame dying out... but it remained just that, a vision. If anything, the flames appeared even stronger than ever. Now what was she doing wrong? She had the right stone, the right galdr, and (she hoped) the right amount of concentration. Then she thought of something. Isa was supposed to be associated with ice and calmness... and Tina was feeling anything but calm right now! Was her frustration affecting her ability to invoke isa? Maybe she should take a break and try again in a few minutes?

Rewind to that part at the beginning of class when Max wondered why he was still taking this class again. This was precisely the reason he shouldn't be. Max watched Flamel's demonstration in mild horror. The galdr chanting was just ....... too much.
And then a bunch of other kids started doing it and Max felt himself cringe. In one swift moment, the Professor had gone and made ice and fire totally uncool.
He didn't want to sing this fee fi fo fum rubbish.
"Professor?" He raised his arm in the air. A bold move, for him. "Doing it this way seems kind of ...... I don't know. Tedious? When we could just use a charm...."
Just saying.

Patrick watched his flame flicker after using the Kenaz rune. He was fairly certain he could dim the flame with the Isa rune. Taking a deep breath and thinking about the flame dimming. Thinking through the galdr he took a deep breath when suddenly he was drawn out of his thoughts.
Max mentioned something about using a charm to dim and grow the flame. Oh boy he was just asking for it. Who was this Max Carden? He was fairly certain it wasn't the one that he had met last year. But at the same time Patrick wasn't sure that he would have handled people polyjuice potion-ing themselves into him either.
Turning back to his candle he began to chant the galdr. "Isa isa isa," taking a deep breath, "i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i," looking down at the flame he envisioned it getting smaller. With the first chanting of the galdr he noticed it flickered down a bit. But he said it one more time watching as the flame finally dimmed just as he wanted it to.

She frowned at her candle, and then her stone. It wasn't glowing. She squeezed her eyes closed and thought of her candle as it was, the light still burnt into her retinas. It was glowing bigger and bigger. Bigger in a way that she noticed it. Yes, that was what was needed. A bigger flame. She kept that image in her head as she repeated the galdr. "kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn," and opened her eyes. The flame might have been slightly larger, but what she did notice was her stone glowed yellow. Not a huge glow. Nowhere near the glow of Professor Flamel's stone, but it was definitely glowing slightly. Like a dimmer light on really dim. But still there.
With fire, it was time for ice. She looked at the galdr in her text book, saying it under her breath a few times, trying to remember the exact way to chant it. She placed the kenaz stone into her left hand and swapped her isa stone into her right. Holding it, and repeating the same deep concentration, imagining the flame puffing out. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i," she said. When nothing happened, again, she let out a small sigh. She restarted her mind, picturing again the flame going out. Her isa stone glowing black. Being in darkness. A puff of smoke. She closed her eyes with that image held tightly in her mind. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i," she chanted, and opened her eyes. Still, her flame was steady. Almost as if it were mocking her.
She narrowed her eyes at it. "Why won't you go out?" she asked it quietly. She took a deep breath in and out, trying to let go of the frustration of failure. Flame. Going. Out. Darkness. She closed her eyes again, feeling the stone in her right hand, and pictured the flame going out. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i," she said again. She kept her eyes closed, still imagining the flame out, just for a moment longer. Then, opening her eyes, she saw the flame was out. Her stone was glowing black.

This was no good. He was never going to remember this galdr, and he'd known that right from the start. It was in his textbook though, so... maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal if he...
... yeah, he was gonna do it. Abra crouched down to the schoolbag that sat at his feet and rifled through it looking through the right book. It was pretty difficult even to do that as quickly as he was attempting, and twice he straightened only to find he was holding his Herbology and then his Defence Against the Dark Arts textbook. Finally he located Ancient Runes Made Easy, at which point he stood again, and opened it up.
After locating the chapter on invoking runes in the index, Abra flipped to the right page and searched the chapter for the right rune. Again, not an easy job, as he couldn't simply scan through the pages with anything like ease. It took him some time but finally, finally, he got there.
"Kenaz kenaz kenaz..." Abra started again, holding his textbook in the crook of his arm and squinting at the words written there, his kenaz runestone still held in his left hand. "... ku ... ka ... ki ... ke ... ko... kun ... kan ... kin ... ken ... kon..." All that repetition, already his eyes were starting to feel the strain. "...ok ek ... ik ... ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn..." So, as long as he'd actually read that right, that was the correct galdr. Now just... to repeat it until he could remember it, and then focus on invoking the rune rather than just remembering the galdr, and then... maybe he'd manage it.
Well. No time like the present. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ... ki ke ko..."
He kept trying.

Nettie had to stifle a laugh at Max Carden because he really DID have a point. This was kind of fun though. Looking down at her runes, she put them down and she picked up the Kenaz rune again. She hadn't really paid attention if it was glowing the last time she did it - she was more focused on the flame before. She could do it again though, right?
Closing her eyes and holding the rune in her right hand once more, she concentrated on making her candle brighter as she had before. "kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn..." she muttered. The flame was starting to grow, not as much as last time, but she did notice the glowing this time around. She smiled and let out a sigh of relief. This really wasn't all that hard, and it was kind of cool that they could use the runes to harness this kind of energy.
Placing Kenaz aside, she grabbed Isa and replaced it in her right hand. Holding out her rune, she closed her eyes and pictured the flame diminishing just as it had before. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i..." she chanted. The flame was going down, down, just as it had before. She pictured it going out, and a few seconds later, it extinguished. The rune...wasn't glowing, though. Was that a good or bad thing? Apparently it didn't matter much because...it still went out?
Except then suddenly, it flickered back to life. It was much dimmer than it had been before, and Nettie just blinked. That was...weird.

Fire and ice. Opposites. It was all something that Stasya found both interesting and complicated, and it made the presence of all the candles make sense. Still, she didn’t see why they needed to know how to use runes to control a candle flame when they had Charms for the same thing, but she’d stayed rather silent during the discussion either way. She was still partial to Ehwaz and its uses regarding the horses in the barns, even if she didn’t need her rune stone when she was out there anymore, and strangely enough the bind runes they’d learned about the inferi term. She’d been listening, but not really doing much more than that and fingering a few of her rune stones idly when the lesson had moved on to actually dealing with the practical uses.
She didn’t mind galdrs by now. She didn’t have them exactly memorized, but all her listening from earlier made her relatively sure she knew the two that they were supposed to use. Kenaz and Isa. Looking down, she located the two appropriate stones and slipped them into her hand while the rest of her rune bag was laid on the floor. Standing back up, she faced the candle she was standing next to. Time to begin.
Kenaz rune in her hand, she slid the Isa stone into her pocket before she began speaking. “Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn” Her candle flame barely flickered, but she didn’t let it bother her. She just kept repeating the galdr until the flame grew in size, reflecting in her eyes dangerously.
Now it was time to switch, as she slipped her hand in her pocket to exchange the kenaz stone for the isa, still focused on the candle flame. The only flicker of uncertainty came in when she let herself wonder if the rune would go so far as to freeze the candle instead of just extinguishing the flame, but it didn’t stop her from beginning the second galdr. “Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i i”
And the candle flame froze. Maybe there was actually such a thing as too much concentration?

"Max has a point....." Archer piped up with a chuckle. Plus, a charm was much faster and took less concentration. You know, aside from the cool factor. This way might have been useful before there were wands, but now.....not so much. That said, she did hold her kenaz stone in her right (or dominant) hand and start chanting.
"Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnn...." She actually felt like she should be on a beach somewhere in Hawaii with these pronunciations. But after a few rounds of galdr chanting, the flames had grown. Not enough to burn off eyebrows, but enough to be noticeable. Which was what she was going for.
She switched out the kenaz stone for the isa stone (isa stone, ha!) and once again started the galdr. "Isa isa isa, i i i i i i i i i, i i i i i i s s s s s s, s s s s s s i i i i i i, i i i i i i i i......" This time it took a bit more effort and chanting, but eventually the candle went out. Good. Now what?

Text Cut: Individual Replies - not quotes, but you all were mentioned
The moment stones were grabbed and chanting began was the moment Flamel began walking around the room. Mental observations were being made as he passed by each individual student, noticing that some were struggling (as to be expected, considering Ancient Runes wasn't easy in comparison to other subjects) and others were showing great promise.
"A little more confidence, Miss Newton. Try not to get bogged down in your textbook for the galdr," he said to the fourth year Ravenclaw as he passed by. When he took a few steps to Mr. Mitsue, the professor added, "Are you envisioning what you want to candle to do with clarity? You have the galdr down, so now just mentally will what you want to have happen."
Blue eyes then locked on to Miss Prichard and Miss Gladin. Seeing their achievement, the man smiled brightly. "Excellent work, you two."
Seeing Mr. Botros, as well as hearing him, the man gave the Prefect a look of encouragement. "Keep on trying." The first step was getting the galdrs memorized, which Flamel would have thought everyone would have done considering they had to read about the two runes before the lesson.
"Nicely done, Mr. Dooley," he said, watching as the boy's fame rose. Flamel was set on standing nearby to watch the Captain decrease the flame with Isa, but then a comment from Mr. Carden was heard.
For a moment, Flamel stood there silently with a number of thoughts running through his mind. Initially he wondering why the Prefect was still taking the course if he felt that way. Galdr chanting was a part of the class, so that shouldn't have been a surprise. But, even so, there was a purpose behind learning and practicing runic magic. "Yes, Mr. Carden, it is, as you said, tedious, especially when we have wands and simple incantations to make magic happen these days. However, it wasn't that easy in the past as this course is designed to teach you. But, even today, runes and galdrs can come in handy in a multitude of situations, especially when your wand isn't on you and simple materials to carve runes on are available. Not to mention runic magic is far more effective when facing runic barriers or obstacles that are stronger than the standard spell."
Leaving those words for Mr. Carden to ponder over, the man continued on with his observations. A glance in Mr. Dooley's direction warranted the boy a smile as his flame began to dim, Miss Newton was now working on doing the same successfully, and Miss Gladin had extinguished her flame before it flickered back to life.
"Make sure the rune stone is glowing to achieve the full outcome," he gently reminded her in addition to anyone else that may have overheard him.
His attention then moved to Miss Dalgaard-Volkova and Miss Calrissian. From afar, Flamel had noted that they two had successfully made the game grow with a series of galdr repetitions. Now the flames were lessening, gradually diminishing more and more with each syllable of the galdr, until the flame was no more. "Fantastic job," he said to the pair of sixth years.
After circling around the room once more and giving those who needed a few more minutes to make some progress, the man clapped his hands together, causing all of the candles in the room to return to their originally lit state. The candles, though, did not remain where they had been floating; they all moved rather quickly and formed a singular line that stretched across the length of the room.
"Now that we have some practice in with Isa and Kenaz, I want to move us along to the next portion of our lesson. Before we continue, I need each of you to choose a side: Isa or Kenaz. Those of you who chose Isa can move up near my desk, and selecting Kenaz means you can gather near the door," he instructed before giving about a minute for everyone to make a decision and move to their designated spot in the room.
Standing in the middle of the room, Flamel looked from one side to the other. Pleased with how the two groups turned out, he said, "We are now going to put your rune-invoking skills to the test with a game very similar to Tug of War. If you are part of the Isa group, your goal is to extinguish all of the flames. If you are on the Kenaz side of the room, your goal is to do the opposite. This task, of course, will not be easy as both teams will be invoking their runic energies at the same time, so this really is a test of your team's overall strength in working as a unified force."
Taking a few steps back toward the windows after giving those directions, Flamel had one final thought to share, "A winner will be declared based on the status of the candles within the next ten minutes. You may start invoking your team's rune in three ... two ... one ... GO!"
OOC: Apologies again for the delay. My RL teaching job had to take priority the last few days, but I hope you didn't mind having some extra time to get posts in for the mini-activity.
We are now going to transition into the main activity, which is going to be set up very similar to Tug of War, but with the candles and everyone's specified rune. What your character needs to do is pick a side, Team Isa or Team Kenaz, and start chanting away. I will be posting The Narrator with daily updates on the current status of the candles.
Please put the team you join in the title of your post so it is easier for everyone to see who's side you are on. It would also be greatly appreciated if we could try having the teams be somewhat equal in size, so please don't all flock to one team.
Multiple posts are strongly encouraged. Keep in mind that every student is at different levels of mastery, but all of your efforts combined are important for this activity, which will be ending on Monday! ^___^
Malachi picks his team and starts chanting, visualizing the fire getting stronger as he chants with determination, "Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn!" He sees the flame get a little brighter and can’t help the smile that appears on his face.

Nettie didn't need to think very much about which side she was going to pick - Kenaz was her obvious choice. It was the one that made the candle brighter which, in her mind, meant it was more powerful. Or something. That was her reasoning, at least, she she headed over to the rest of the team and prepared herself.
When they got the call clear to start, she took her rune and closed her eyes, concentrating. Hopefully the combined effort of the whole team would make them the clear winners!
"Kenaz kenaz kenaz, ku ka ki ke ko, kun kan kin ken kon, ok ek ik ak uk, kaunnnnnnnnn..." she began to chant.
