Default Muggle Studies: Lesson 1: The Internet

Despite the rain earlier that month, the weather for that particular day was significantly the opposite. That was, the air was warm and it was a beautiful morning outside. Unfortunately, the class could not be held outdoors as this particular lesson called for electronics to be used. More directly, they would be using the computers. Today’s setting was quite different from regular lessons. For one thing, a classroom was not being used but the Entertainment Room was. For another, the usual equipment that adorned the Room all seemed to have vanished (but were actually stashed safely and carefully at the back) and every computer that was available had been set up into rows and columns- much like a Muggle computer lab. There were long, rectangular tables that stationed five computers apiece and were accompanied by long benches. The furniture faced the front of the Room where Professor Kaysha’s trusted whiteboard now stood.

Where is your professor?

She’s at the desk temporarily brought in as she tries to focus on putting together future lesson plans. Given the recent occurrences at the School, Kay sometimes found this a challenge. Never the less, she looked up and greeted each arrival.

HELPFUL LINKS:
*Question 1
*Mini Activity: Day 1
*Mini Activity: Day 2
*Mini Activity: Day 3
*Main Activity: Day 1
*Main Activity: Day 2
*Main Activity: Day 3
*Main Activity: Day 4 & Question 2
*Replies and Wrap up!

OOC: WELCOMEEE to our first OOC lesson; this would not be the first IC one Your charries’ will notice that the computers are off currently. They should not put them on... or they can and face the consequences We’ll get started in about 27- 28 hours.

So they would be dealing with the internet today; Madison wasn't surprised, but she was still happy about this. The lesson was sure to be fun. And she was curious as she listened to Professor Stewart list off the different pieces of hardware and software and briefly explain the history of the internet. Fortunately that didn't last too long, because she already knew this stuff and wanted to get to the practical part.

They had to push the power button. Well, that was easy and logical since the computers had been turned off.

Smiling, Madison pushed the button, watching as it highlighted blue. Okay, now the computer was turning on and she just needed to wait for everything to boot up. Too bad these computers were pretty old and thus a little slower, but it was okay; she understood that was how life could be sometimes and at least they HAD computers to use.

Soon enough Madison was greeted with the home screen. So this computer was using Windows. Interesting.

As she listened to Professor Stewart, she let her mouse hover over the different icons. She already knew about the recycling bin and what not, she was more curious to see what games were on the computer. Maybe she could find something fun to play at a later time... In the meantime, she found the icon for Chrome, and clicked it twice.

The screen froze, and Madison frowned, waiting for it to fix itself.

After waiting a few moments, the browser popped up on her screen. She smiled. Yep, her page had the google logo on it. Everything worked exactly as it should have.

That done, she waited for further instruction.

The computer was booted up now and Natalie took hold of her mouse. It took her a minute to get used to the movement, but she found the arrow on the screen and looked at all her options. Most of them looked familiar from her mum's computer. And yes, she saw the colorful circle icon, but she was DYING to see if this computer had the asteroid game that her mum's computer had.

Surely a detour would be fine. A lot of the students were being slow anyway. Natalie clicked on the start menu, which she was familiar with, and then searched for games. Games, games, games... Ah, there it was. A new menu dropped out, but... no sign of an asteroid game. Darn.

Clicking out of it, Natalie THEN decided to follow instructions and click on the "chrome" icon. A window popped up. Ah, googly, yes. She had heard of googly. Google? No, surely it was Googly. That's what her mum called it, anyway.

Benji dutifully took notes on all the cool computer stuff! Yes, he had used that old typing program before BUT his Muggle teachers had never allowed him to actually click on any of these -- icons? Check the notes he'd just taken... yep, icons -- by himself. He swirled the mouse around the screen, watching it make cool patterns as he moved his hand. (Seriously, that was really cool. Are you seeing this?!)

And then... IT WAS TIME. Clicking! The Internet! Google? He didn't know what a search engine was, but he could make a good educated guess, he thought. Either way, he swirled the mouse in big loop-de-loops some more until it reached the circle with the House colors on it. (Had Google done that on purpose? Was it made by witches and wizards and just used by Muggles? He was too scared to ask the question out loud because it seemed like a stupid one, but he still wondered.) He double clicked the icon and waited a moment until a big white box appeared with colorful letters spelling out "Google" in the middle. Was this... THE WORLD WIDE WEB?

Natasha took some notes, and turned on her computer when instructed. It was slow to boot up, but nothing went wrong otherwise. While it was starting up, she took down the rest of her notes. When the desktop and icons finally appeared, she double clicked the chrome browser, and it slowly loaded just fine as well. She had a million things she'd love to search, but she didn't, and just waited for further instruction.

Nathan listened to the professor explained the function of the keys and why it was arranged in such a way. Interesting... He realized now that without the keyboard or a 'mouse', they wouldn't be able to type or navigate the things they wanted to do with the computer.

He waited until the monitor screen displayed some 'icons' before he could use the mouse. Nathan watched the little 'arrow' pointer moved across the screen, quite fascinated that it seemed to move exactly where he wanted it to go. "Such an obedient little arrowhead, aren't you?"he muttered under his breath.

Right, time to click on the 'Chrome' or whatever it's called on the screen. The professor called this the goo-glish something search engine. Or was it Gar-gle? Gargoyles? Gore-girl? No, that's not it... Brilliant. He should have paid more attention to the lesson.

Nathan did a single left-click on the mouse but...nothing happen. He noticed he only highlighted the icon. Weird? Hmm... oh wait. He remembered the professor told them to click twice rapidly. So he did ....with a clickety-click.

Ah there you go...

Finally, he saw the browser page pop up.

Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict

Computers weren’t entirely unfamiliar to Stasya, although as she thought about it, most of her experience with them had really only been knowing they were in here when she’d come to watch movies with Koen. It was kind of disconcerting, but then also not because this wasn’t CoMC. Therefore she didn’t feel quite as bad about not knowing a lot, and at least she’d known what it was. Plus, she’d sensed the awkwardness from Lucas before the lesson had begun, and it had made her concerned that something was wrong. Even beyond the fact she’d gotten a practically coded message from Derf, to which she’d replied with a nod before everything else had happened and the lesson had begun. Meaning, she’d tried to stay quiet as answers had been called out around her. Internet was a word she’d heard of, although all the other terms were kind of new and therefore intriguing.

Part of her wondered if they could use the internet to help with more Animagus research, narrowing things down before they actually tried to accomplish the task. Except, she wasn’t really sure leaving a trail behind counted as secret and she still felt like their little group was fairly secret. Entirely Gryffindor, at least, which helped with hopefully keeping it away from the notice of staff members she’d rather not deal with more than she had to. She had enough paranoia already about the prefect notebooks.

The activity, at least, seemed pretty easy. Finding the button they’d been told about hadn’t been too hard, yet she’d still found herself idly chewing her lower lip as she waited for the computer to boot up. It seemed like it was taking an awfully long time, which meant she’d started wondering if there was magic sabotage going on somehow. It wasn’t secret that the headmaster and the Divination professor didn’t get along with Professor Stewart, and playing on computers didn’t really fit with the rest of their agenda. Not as far as she could figure out, although she hadn’t really figured out what their goal was aside from making Hogwarts as unlikable as possible.

The explanation of the next step had derailed her tangent, though. Mouses? There were mouses? She’d begun looking for cute little furry creatures, moment before she realized they weren’t talking about the creatures. The little plastic thing didn’t even look like a mouse, but she still poked it with a finger before watching the little arrow zoom around the picture on the monitor before she let it land on the colorful circle and double clicked on it with the not-a-real-mouse. Debate over the name of computer parts nonetheless, she blinked at the white screen that appeared with the word Google splashed across it. So far she was following along fairly well?

All the stuff about browsers, icons and keyboards were mostly going in one ear and straight out the other. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to concentrate……. because he did. He was just finding it difficult. There was always a sleepy struggle when it came to morning classes. Sorry Professor Stewart.

He ducked further behind his monitor to stifle a yawn just as the screen decided to finally come to life. And now for the next bit.

He knew how to do basic computer things because, with the help of his brother, he’d used the muggle machine to search for and order rare, limited edition issues of some of his favourite graphic novels. So that meant he was basically an expert now. Max double clicked on the icon and watched as the next page popped on up.

Easy peasy.

All the technical talk about hardware and software went right over her head. While she wasn’t intimately acquainted with this bit of technology, Jessa felt she knew enough to get things done. Her real interests lay elsewhere. As far as she was concerned, whenever she visited her mother, She could have a crack at it and learn some interesting things. For being a muggle invention, the internet wasn’t pretty useful and insightful. Didn’t need to know the history of the computer to know how to turn it on.

Spaced as she was, Jessa reached over to press the button when the Professor instructed them to do so. Had she not known what the button did, she’d have pressed it ages ago to find out. As this was one of the more familiar pieces of muggle technology, her curiosity, like her attention span had gone for a walk.

Things were happening on her screen but don’t ask her what because her attention, once again, was through the window.

Every now and then, the woman’s voice would travel through her ears and her brain picked bits and pieces to interpret and discard. It didn’t escape her notice that the Professor had begun a statement instructing them in regards to if things weren’t working right for them but got side tracked and never finished.

Huh.

The mention of school houses momentarily caught her attention. That was when she noticed that her screen looked nothing like what the woman was describing. There was no home screen, no button with a lot of colours, nothing to click that would take her to the browser—and it wasn’t just her ignorance. No. She didn’t have problems getting on the internet at her mum’s.

Um.

What?

Jessa straightened in her seat, watching line by line of white text fly across the page and disappear to Merlin knew where atop of background of blue. This was.....but the Professor never told them what to do if....she......was.....just gonna ....sit here.....and.....yeah.......

Bel's mind was definitely wandering. Sorry professor. Not much stimulation in this subject matter for the child of a muggle and a muggleborn. The ancient computer had booted up now though so she was ready to move on. Though even though the professor said they didn't need to copy notes down, Bel still did, partly for something else to do.

Also, the whole idea of storing deleted things was just funny, wasn't it? Like keeping hold of your trash. Though she guessed the visual still held up because you did empty your rubbish bin once it was full and all that.

Anyway, she zoomed through, double clicking on the chrome icon and bringing up the browser window. Now she was hoping they'd be able to search for anything they wanted! That thought perked Bel up a bit.

Well...that made little sense. Why make the rubbish bin look like a recycle bin when it deleted things instead of, you know, recycling it? Was there some deeper meaning to that? Was like...uh...the stuff moved to that icon area thingy not REALLY gone then? He was sorta little too caught up on this detail - because trash and recycle were not exactly synonymous as far as he knew...there WERE some fine differences - and had only been half paying attention to the next set of instructions when he began hearing the gentle clicking noises of his classmates as they began proceeding.

Oh. What? Was he supposed to open up the tra--- recycle bin?

Knowing all about this clicking business, Derf set to doing just that...only his was completely empty and thus rather disappointing. Glancing around the classroom quickly provided the sixth year with a visual cue that he was NOT doing the right thing and thus set to fixing that by following his monkey see monkey do technique once again. Click on the house color icon. Got it. Double clicking once produced no results - well, there was this sorts swirly looking thing that spun a bit near the arrow - so Derf gave this clicking business another go. Still nothing.

Again? Again.

Derf soon lost track of how much clicking he was doing and it was getting lost in all the other clicking around him...but eventually something DID happen. And several times over. While the white screen with this Goober...whatever logo appeared, it all turned white once again and then the logo appeared. Once again, before he could do anything else, the process repeated. And again. And again. Blinking as the process continued a few more times, Derf was quick to note that the top bit of this, er, window thingy was beginning to accumulate more little grey looking boxes. No...they weren't boxes...but there were a bunch of them popping up and becoming more and more narrow with each addition and each with that little white circle and Hogwarts house color 'G' on each.

Eventually...this stopped...and he began to curiously count how many 'G's were present. 1....2....3........................36.

Default Part 1 and talking to Lucas beside her!
Loveable Gryffinpuff| Stella Bella

She looked down at her notes she was taking and beames at how much notes she took over the lesson. She anyways even if she didn't need to for studying or essays that she might have. Hey... better safe then sorry as she always thinks. Stella looked over at Lucas sitting next to her. " Did you take any notes? If not I got quite a bit that I wrote down." she said showing him her nice and neat notes she took.

Um... yeah now they were starting up the computer, she cpuld do that. Looking around for the silver button on the screen she looked up and down on the monitor feeling around it for a button. Hm... where was it on this monitor? Looking around some more she seen it and laughed alittle at herself, if it was a snake it would've bit her. Pushing the button she waited for the computer to boot up as thr screen went blue she smiled.

Sucess!

Well... that was easy enough, after she found the button that is.

...... Huh?

Before he could hear anything else, there was a voice beside him and so, he turned to look at Stella, who was talking to him about..... notes? Uh. Lucas glanced down at her notes, which were neat and nice to look at and understandable, and then to his own notes, which looked like it had gone fighting and seriously lost and these were the remains.

Yeah.

"How..... how did you......" he spluttered, pointing at her notes as if that would explain what it was he was trying to say. He shook his head and, instead, whispered, "I have..... some? It just.... looks like badly written code. But thanks, Stella. We could exchange notes later?" You know, if he managed to read any of this.

And then the Professor was speaking again which, yes, meant more note-taking. His hand was going to fall off at the end of this! Frowning slightly, he started drawing the desktop and the icons - which turned out to look just as bad as his notes were but that was okay. He even drew the logos that she was talking about, especially the one for the internet that they were concentrating on. The one that had the HOUSE COLOURS.

Yeah. THAT was getting underlined. House colours and Google Chrome. He was almost itching to ask someone if there was a connection there but his own need to not draw attention to himself kept him quiet.

Anyways. She said to click twice on the icon? Click click!

There was a pause - and he almost thought that something was wrong with his computer because nothing was happening - when the window popped up. And there was the icon. In house colours.

Yeah...... he was going to give that note another underline.

So can they start searching now?

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

IT WASN'T WORKING.

Joey had managed to turn the computer on alright, but clicking on the weird coloured icon was proving less of a success. The little arrow thing was HOVERING over the Chrome icon, but he'd clicked with the mouse TWICE and it hadn't worked.

So he clicked TWICE again. First click. PAUSE. Second click.

HE didn't realise that his clicks were supposed to be pretty close together, and due to his general ignorance he just assumed the muggle machines might appreciate a little slowness. But he was FRUSTRATED, and looking around at the computers of the students around him made him MORE frustrated as most of them had successfully opened the Gooooooogle thing.

Or whatever it was. So, of course, impatient little Józef clicked super rapidly about a BILLION times. And it had proved somewhat of a success - the Chrome page had opened, after all, but about 23456789 copies of it had opened in quick succession.

No, he wasn't exaggerating. Much.

Default Lucas and a bit of a catch up and part 2!
Loveable Gryffinpuff| Stella Bella

Stella was use to taking notes, that was basically what she did in her muggle school ALOT! Not meaning to brag, but she was quite a good note taker.

Yeah...that wasn't something that someone should brag about, a lot of people hated taking notes.

Stella giggled at his reply. "I been taking alot of notes at my muggle school, so I guess I'm quite experienced." she said shrugging as if it wasn't no big deal. Stella nodded. " Sure, that sounds good, you can borrow my notes anytime. " she said smiling softly at him.

Um... rught now, to click on the icon she was talking about, she knew which one it was without a shadow of a doubt she used computers alot in her muggle school. Taking more notes she looked at the screen finding the Google Chrome icon.

click click!

Ok... she doubled click why wasn't it working or opening up? She bit her lip thinkking she did something wrong that made the computer act up. Although she decided to wait for a bit and see if was going to come up. After waiting a few minutes the window popped up

sucess!

She smiles happily at herself and started taking more notes down. So...do they wait to see what they were searching or do they start searching the web? As for now shenjust sat there abd waited.

Oooookay. The screen was no longer blank, although Chloe wasn't sure what she was looking at. Or what she was looking for. The professor had given some very fast directions, and it was obvious who had some experience with computers and who was lost.

And it was obvious that some people understood the directions and some were just hoping for the best. Chloe was good at hoping for the best, so she placed her hand over the mouse and practiced pointing and clicking. Rooooll and click. Rooooll and click. Interesting, she supposed but not enough to make anything happen on the screen. She had to roll and point and click one of those little buttons, right?

So she clicked on all of them. All the little buttons. Click. Click. Click click clickclickclick.

At the precise moment that Madison froze, Kay happened to look in her direction. Was something wrong? She edged towards the girl’s computer in time to see the screen bounce back to life, the browser appearing on the screen. “Let me know if it freezes again, Ms. Valentine.’’

As it was, Professor Stewart had completely missed Natalie’s little detour...

“Having fun, Mr. Park? Kay asked. She really meant it because he genuinely seemed to be enjoying himself as the mouse’s arrow danced about the screen.

She had a million things she'd love to search, but she didn't, and just waited for further instruction.

Kay gave a nod of approval as she strode by the baby Ravenclaw. Instructions were being complied with so far. More importantly, Natasha seemed to be having no issues.

No more questions? Kay was somewhat disappointed but allowed Nathan to continue the task at hand.

SPOILER!!: Stasya! <3

She could be imagining it but Stasya did look somewhat distracted. At first, Kay thought it had something to do with the instructions. A closer look told her that the Gryffindor had followed those to the letter. “Is something bothering you, Ms. Dalgaard- Volkova?’’

Easy peasy.

All caught up? Despite his tiredness, Kay was pleased to see that Max was up to date. She was still keeping an eye on him as much as she could lest he dozed off.

SPOILER!!: Jessa! <3

As she was giving explanations to the class, occasionally Kay would glance over to Jessa. It seemed as though the seventh year was not listening to everything being said, this was the reason she had decided to make a check on Jessa. Much to the woman’s annoyance, she saw that the system was malfunctioning. “Ms. Camridge? Try holding down the power button, the one we used earlier, to shut the computer off and then repeat to turn back on. If it doesn’t work, please select another system to use.’’ The annoyance and wariness were kept out of her voice. It wasn’t fair that the kiddos had to suffer because she, Kay, was not granted funds to upgrade the Room.

This was another student all caught up so far. Kay flashed the Hufflepuff Captain a thumbs up.

SPOILER!!: Derf! <3

Kay’s blue eyes widened when she saw the amount of pages that had popped up on Derf’s system. “One will do, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne. Not that I’m blaming you, I know you wouldn’t intentionally open that many.’’ Malfunctions were to be blamed.

[QUOTE=Granger Danger;12353673]Stella was use to taking notes, that was basically what she did in her muggle school ALOT!

As for now shenjust sat there abd waited.[/QUOTE

Instructions were completed with Stella. And what was this? She was offering her notes to little Lucas? “Three points to Gryffindor for your offer, Ms. Starson.’’

Yeah.

"How..... how did you......" he spluttered, pointing at her notes as if that would explain what it was he was trying to say.

“Not bad note taking, Mr. Dakest. Give yourself some credit,’’ the adult said kindly. And yes, he too had done well with the instructions.

Much.

"ERRRRRRRRRRR."

What was all that clicking about? By the time Kay had located the source, Józef seemed to have a trillion Chrome pages open. Another case of a frozen system? “One please, Mr. Kowalski. I’m sorry if the computer froze.’’

So she clicked on all of them. All the little buttons. Click. Click. Click click clickclickclick.

Kay grinned as she watched Chloe’s antics. “Experimenting there, Ms. Kettleburn? Or do you need some help?’'

“Now that we’ve completed the basic aspect of accessing the search engine, I would like for you to click into that rectangular box. Simply use the mouse to guide the arrow to the box; the arrow will change into what looks like a capital or uppercase I. Once that happens, click the box and type a topic, object, name or anything sensible of your choosing into it.’’

Kay gave them a few minutes to allow them to do this or ask questions while she continued to walk among the rows.

“Once that’s done, you can either tap the ‘enter’ key on the keyboard or click on ‘Google Search’ on the screen. Should you click on ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ you’ll be taken to a particular page relating to your search. Go ahead, everyone!’’

OOC: Mini activity is completed after this set of instructions, folks! Thanks for playing thus far, yal are doing fantastic. Catch up for the activity will be allowed until tomorrow evening. In the meanwhile, let the kiddos have fun with Google searching. Just make sure they search for SS appropriate topics

Okay, so they were technically different! Good to know. Lucas wouldn't pretend to be an expert about technology stuff. He merely used phones and computers to the best of his ability, honestly.

But now...all they have to do was push a button? He shot the professor a slightly...??? what??? look because they were more than capable of doing that without needing all this time in the world to do it. Who would need clarification on PUSHING A BUTTON? He snorted to himself and did indeed push the button. His computer did the booting up thing. These computers must be kinda' old. Maybe. Again, Lucas really didn't know. He used his phone when he was at home more than a computer anyway, and the most he used of technology was actually on his various gaming systems.

And no offense, but the explanation of this thing was annoying Lucas. Like...HE USED COMPUTERS BEFORE. HE KNEW HOW IT WORKED. HE KNEW WHAT A BLOODY ICON WAS.

Take a step back, buddy....some of these guys might have literally never seen a computer in their lives. Wizardfolk are all different. Don't be so rude about it ---

but like this is EASY --

Okay, well, patience. PATIENCE, LUCAS.

The two oppositions on his shoulders seemed to be having conversation.

He clicked on the Chrome icon and gave it a minute to load. Damn, these computers really were old. He looked up at Professor Stewart and raised his hand. "Professor, we should hold a fundraiser for you. These things are like dinosaurs. I have a better laptop at home.......Hogwarts shouldn't have to deal with this!" he smiled though, his tone gentle and non-provoking. Professor Stewart was NOT a professor he had to be nervous around or scared of. She was chill. Plus, a fundraiser could be fun! He fingered the keys and typed random things in the search bar while he waited for Stewart to go on. He wondered if Hogwarts had anything blocked. Like...muggle schools did sometimes? Hm. He didn't wanna' test it.

He typed, "voice actors from Attack on Titans Anime #1" because the remake had been AWESOME and Lucas wanted to see the ancient original from the early 2000s. Like 20someting or other. And he was getting bored waiting for everything. But once Stewart started moving on, he got his way back to Google home page. But then....she literally said to search something. So uh...he went back to searching for what he had been searching BEFORE. This was so easy. Why was Muggle Studies so chill?

Natalie had finished the previous "activity" quite quickly and had time to look around at all the other students. She was, uhh... surprised... to see how many were struggling with simple tasks. And how many of these compooters were so OLD and slow. Like her mum's.

Hmm, anyway, time to move on.

Natalie had luck with her computer so far. As per the instructions, Natalie moved her mouse to the search bar, but she moved it too fast and the cursor flew off the screen, and then she overcorrected it and it flew off the other side. So she moved it sloooowly and finally got it in the box.

Click.

Now... what to search for. She had the world at her fingertips. She could search for ANYTHING.

Natalie wiggled her fingers for a moment before punching each key with her two pointer fingers.

Turning the computer on, Archer had already done before the lesson started. So, it was a simple matter to move the mouse over so that the cursor was on the Chrome button (a browser she disliked, by the way) and double-click. Of course, it took a bit for that to start (how ancient were these computers?), but it did start. From there, it was a simple matter to find the indicated box (at least they hadn't had to type the address, right?), click on it and......

She had no clue what she wanted to search for.

As she’d wondered once again if she’d get in trouble for looking up Animagus things during class, since she guessed they were going to be doing something or other with the Google page open on the computer, Stasya had been startled at hearing Professor Stewart’s question. “Can I tell you after the lesson?,” she asked in response. Mostly because she didn’t want to risk getting heard by the wrong people, even though she’d started being suspicious about how much the headmaster actually knew about everything that happened around the castle. She hadn’t gotten asked about the letters she sent nearly daily to Professor Hirsch, but there was still the question of the notebooks and how he knew if she was punishing rulebreakers or not. Basically, it was easier just to hope that the Muggle Studies professor had precautions set up and tell her what had distracted her privately.

Plus, there was the distraction now of the many Google pages that had opened up on Derf’s computer next to her. She’d had to bite her lip to hold back a giggle, thankful the activity had moved on so she could occupy herself with something else. Aside from still thinking of the computer mouse as not-a-real-mouse, while she used it to click on the little text box.

“Animagus training” Sometimes it paid to be a little reckless, and there was still always the possibility nothing would show up.

Now, the real question was, has his computer booted up? Sure, it made weird grumbling noises, and air seemed to whoosh from somewhere within it, too. Then the writing on the screen disappeared, and next he was faced with all these icons on the top of the desk - that's what professor Stewart had called it, right?

Once he'd located the House icon... did he need to move the thing that didn't quite resemble a mouse? Oh. Oh. The small arrow moved as he moved the mouse, how fantastic was that! Daehyun clicked and then clicked again and... nothing opened. The icon became highlighted, however, so at least he'd targeted it.

Click. Click. Nothing. Wasn't he clicking fast enough?

Clickity-click.

And BOOM. The screen turned white in the beginning, then the computer made all those grumbling noises once again, and eventually he saw the Google thing. Could he search for anything?

... anything?

It had taken him a while to locate all the letters, but finally, he typed in, A-C-R-O-M-A-N-T-U-L-A, and hit the enter button.

Wait...what had Jessa done to her computer? Peering around things as best he could, he KNEW what that screen was. Or, well, he was pretty sure he knew what it was. Kinda ironic that she had the blue screen of death and now had to, you know, revive the computer. Least everyone knew she was good at doing that sort of thing, bringing things back from the dead and stuff. Though he had gained a kind of fondness for her kneazles, it all still...caused a violent chill to shoot up and down his body. On top of that...he felt bad for thinking about his friend in such sarcastic terms sooooooo back to his own screen it was and all the...er...well all 36 of whatever these things were called.

And just in time for Professor Stewart to stroll on by and...not blame him? That was nice of her because, well, there was no one else to blame but him, you know? He had been the one doing the clicking, excessive amounts of it at that. "Er...yeah..." he chuckled boyishly, ruffling his hair a bit as he nodded and...started closing those one by one with a click on the tiny little 'x' like he had seen done on muggle TV shows. Following the next set of instructions, Derf took pause trying to think about just WHAT to search for. It was a bit daunting, you know? Anything in the world to type in and hit send to see what popped up and stuff...

Eventually, after a few painfully long minutes of thinking and drawing blanks, the Hufflepuff settled on going with something familiar: his name. Hunting and pecking with his index fingers, he sluggishly typed his name (Derfael Ashburry-Hawthorne) into the search box thingy and clicked search. And, to no one's surprise, he came up with nothing under his own name...though there were a fair few people with the name Ashburry-Hawthorne listed on some CallerNameService site. Whatever that was. He was hardly curious enough to click on those to see where it took him. Instead, Derf went back - or rather clicked on one of the other tabs for a clean slate....and considered typing in another name. So back to hunting and pecking it was until he had finished typing a second name....and hit send again: Julian Scrimgeour.

Hold on. The desktop? But it looked nothing like a desk. How did muggles not get confused between actual desktops and computer ones? His expression nonplussed, Abra took in what the 'desktop' looked like, calling back vague memories of the one and only other time he had been at a computer. Then, they had been at this stage for approximately 0.287372 seconds before moving on, and Abra could see why. The 'desktop' was... not interesting.

When the next set of instructions were given, Abra just sort of... sat there for a moment. Okay... 'chrome icon' first. That was easy to locate, as there wasn't exactly much to look through in order to find it. Then Abra took hold of the mouse - funny name for it, really, it didn't look anything like a mouse - and moved it to point at the right icon. Sort of. There was a bit of acclimatising required first as it initially took him a moment to locate the arrow on the screen, and then found it moved a LOT faster than he had been expecting it to. Once he had got to grips with it, he manoeuvred the arrow to the chrome icon and clicked it twice.

... Nothing. Errr.

Abra took a quick glance around the room to see how everyone else had managed this step, and if he was missing anything. Some others were clicking a whole lot more than twice, so he decided that was what he would do. Turning his attention back to the screen, and leaning maybe a little closer than he needed to, he used the mouse to make the arrow hover over the chrome icon again and--

"AgH!" Maybe he was of the wrong disposition for using computers. All of a sudden the screen had flashed white and caused Abra to jolt in surprise and quickly fling himself back away from the machine, only just managing to stay in his seat... only to find that all that had happened was that the screen had changed. He supposed this was the 'page' Professor Stewart had mentioned (though there wasn't a single book in sight). Uhhhh, anyway. Ahem. "I'm fine. I'm fine." He was fine.

So this was a Google then? Interesting...?

On Professor Stewart's say-so, Abra moved the mouse again and clicked inside that long rectangle, squinting at the small flashing line that appeared there once he had done so. The professor hadn't mentioned anything about flashing lines; had he managed to break it already? He couldn't remember for his life of him whether this had happened all those years ago at his friends' computer.

Deciding to just... pretend that the flashing line wasn't happening, Abra tried to think of a topic to research, but his mind had gone completely blank. It was a while before his thoughts strayed to where they usually did when his mind wandered or looked for a distraction.

Looking down at the keyboard, Abra began to slowly and painstakingly type - using the index finger on each hand only - 'C-U-T-E-C-A-T-S'. Space bar? Don't know her.

Kaysha Stewart was on his list, among a few others. And Scrimgeour's list was not a place someone wanted to be.

Without giving any indication ahead of time that he would be making an appearance in the middle of the lesson, the old man quietly made his way through the door of the Muggle Studies classroom and took in the sight before him, making sure not to make eye contact with the woman. He was there to observe for a specific purpose, and that was exactly what he was doing. But to those who knew not of his purpose, he was sure it would raise the question of what he was doing there.

Mentally taking notes, he watched as the students stared at the oddly shaped screens in front of them. From where he stood in the back of the room, he could make out the word Google and even some of the things that they were searching into it...

Needless to say, Scrimgeour was not impressed. Was this what Muggle Studies had succumbed to? What a pity. What a pity indeed.

"Yes!" Benji enthusiastically answered Professor Stewart's question of whether he was having fun. "This looks so cool!"

He twirled the mouse over to the box they were meant to be typing in and clicked it. Hmm... What to search for? He wondered how his parents were doing -- he hadn't heard from them in a bit, though that was normal -- so he tried typing in "mum and dad" and clicking search.

However... That took him to something that told him a lot about people who decidedly were not his parents. Had he done something wrong? Maybe he should look for their names, instead...? He frowned, concentrating hard on the task at hand. At least he was a fast typer. Something about his prior experience with computers was paying off!
