On this mild, September night you find yourself heading out to the lake for your lesson on the Divine Arts. The path you take is illuminated by blue bell flames, a precaution to ensure no one arrives late with the excuse they'd gotten lost. Such an excuse wouldn't be tolerated, even without the help of the magical fire. Consider yourselves lucky, Fletcher has decided to be generous.
Out by the lake, the Professor stands by what appears to be a large bonfire. Around the fire, is a ring, an age line if you will, ensuring only he could get within a certain distance of the flames. This was him not trusting in the students ability to understand safety on their own. There would be that one kid who wanted to have a close enough look to burn his retinas--and his face long before his inner eye had a chance to suffer that damage.
Not on his watch.
Also surrounding the fire are log seats that seat, up to three students. They all have your names on them, sit out of place and you may find yourself unable to sit for a while, but not in the way you might so rightly be thinking.
Come with your ready minds and leave the roughhousing and lollygagging back in the castle.
OOC: Welcome to the first Divination lesson of the term! I'll be moving the class along in 24 hrs so come on in and get comfy. Just keep in mind the Professor's rules and your character should be fine....or don't
I’m right, you’re wrong. They don’t call me a Seer for nothing.

Although she figured he didn't give a fwooper about whether any of them were being difficult for him. He gave the aura of someone who enjoyed exerting his control over children. Pity. Hanna pictured how unhappy he must be in his life to need to dominate a group of under-aged students.
She smiled at him and jumped to her feet. Yes, JUMPED to her feet. "YES Sir," she said, resisting the urge to salute him. She jumped forward and did 25 perfect push-ups on her toes without showing signs of tiring. It was, after all, an exercise she had done at least weekly for the past 7 years. She and Mister Prichard it appeared would be standing for the rest of class, which was less good... but still. She just pictured him going back to his office once class was done, crying because of how lonely he was.
She frowned at him as he spoke. Did he actually think of the words he was saying? He was the RUDEST man she had ever had the displeasure of meeting. And she was SO close to grabbing her things and leaving his stupid class. He was a bully. A big stinking bully. And of course, what could they do? Nothing. Because their new even-more-of-a-bully Headmaster was just the same.
And then the questions. Hanna didn't like fire. She was glad she was standing where she was. It was nice for its warmth and all, but she had sugh a great fear of being on fire, which of course was why she wasn't glad to hear about their topic. Not sure whether to raise her hand or not, in case he bit her head off, she raised it. "Professor," she enunciated. In case he didn't catch that she had spoken to him by his title. Not that he deserved it."Pyromancy is where you observe the flame for shapes." And... things. "But it's dangerous because you could get so caught up in seeing things that you fall forward into it, catch fire and burn alive without having time to cast a flame freezing charm on yourself." Yes the thought absolutely TERRIFIED her.
It was not visible from the spot he held by the flames but the man's lips twitched by the slightest degree. Any more and it could've been mistaken for a smile. It was laughable, really. Her sudden show of enthusiasm. For his sake? Trying to prove she wasn't bothered by the punishment? Well good, she shouldn't be. The rules were there, she didn't follow, punishment was handed out.
This was nothing unusual.
He'd been about to remind her that he didn't ask for a definition as he'd just more or less provided one but thankfully she got to the point soon after that. At least...he thought she was getting to the point. She didn't. The man fixed her with an unimpressed look. "I don't remember asking you if or what made the art dangerous, Ms. Newton. Is it so hard to pay attention?" First not noticing it would suit her better to stand if everyone else was and now this.

He shifted uncomfortably as it only seemed to get worse from there. He found that he couldn’t..... look at the man anymore so he looked down at his feet, his tiny fists clenched and his chin trying hard not to do that wibble wobble and-
.........
Uh. Did he just say twenty-five push-ups? TWENTY-FIVE?!
He couldn’t even do TWO!
Lucas whimpered but said nothing against it. This was bad. Bad bad bad. And FIFTY push-ups would be even worse and he was sure he would die, if that happened. And then there was his mum. What would Mum say if she found out that he disobeyed rules?? ...... Yeah, it was better to start. Now. Right now.
One push-up...... two push-ups...... three......
It was tiring work but he was concentrating on the push-ups so much that he didn’t hear what the Professor man was saying to anyone else. If he had, it might have made him feel better to know that he wasn’t the only one who’d been punished but right now, all he could concentrate on were the push-ups.
....... eight....... nine...... ten........
This was getting harder and harder. Lucas was starting to find it difficult to breathe but he also didn’t want the Professor Fletcher man to think he was a wimp. Or anyone, really.
How did people do this?! He wasn’t a professional athlete! He was ELEVEN!
...... nineteen...... twenty......
Would this give him muscles? He really hoped so!
........ twenty-three......
He wanted Emma!cuddles.
......... twenty-five!
And DONE!
Lucas collapsed onto his stomach after the last push-up, breathing heavily but enjoying this moment of freedom. To him, it had lasted an eternity and he never ever ever ever EVER wanted to do that again. Sports were not his thing. EXERCISE was not his thing.
He half-wanted to cry and also wanted to run away from this class and find Emma for some cuddles but that wasn’t an option. So, Lucas got up again and decided to stay silent. No answers, nothing. Because he didn’t know. He had no stories, except that it was used in the olden times - like, probably Merlin times. And sometimes people threw rice into the fire. And sometimes they hit drums but he figured that was mostly to create tension.
But stories? He had no stories.
He could see the distress, it was in his eyes, clear as day. This was life, it didn't always give gentle reprimands. You had to learn to adjust. Had he meant to send the first year into a tizzy? No. But rules were rules and he would have to learn them somehow. This was a lesson he didn't suspect the boy would forget any time soon. If he was smart, he would learn from the mistakes of the others here too to avoid them himself.
Calvin silently watched him carry out the task, doing his own mental count. The push ups were sloppy, not at all like Ms. Newton's but with the class beginning, he didn't have the patience to watch him do them again.
The boy did himself some good getting off the floor before he had to say something about it. "Has the mild exercise removed your ability to form opinions, Mr. Dakest?" Not knowing an answer to the first was one thing, but the second simply asked what he thought. He would answer the next question. He would.

An apology, would you look at that. A willingness to learn from her mistakes. Calvin nodded his approval. "I trust you won't be forgetting again." It was very good of her. He made no comment on her mention of the muggle world but when she mentioned it again, he began to note the pattern.

He could not for the life of him figure out how anyone coming in -- and there were quite a few -- could be stupid enough to break these rules. Did the rules seem a bit lame? Yes, of course they did. (Remain standing? Don't ask anyone how their day is going? What?) Did he like Professor Fletcher? Not particularly -- he seemed a bit too much in the headmaster's pocket, to be honest, and seemed very keen to mete out punishments for even minor offenses -- not that he would ever admit or show as much. As far as anyone could ever be able to tell, Benji had no negative feelings whatsoever toward the new professor or the headmaster.
What he did know was that kids were meant to respect adults. Adults could make your life very bad if they wanted to. They have all the power, after all. Why provoke them? Especially when it's so easy just to do what they say and move on. So he wasn't allowed to chitchat for one class period. So what? As soon as class was over, he could talk to anyone he wanted. There was no point in arguing or misbehaving. He would let the other professors, as adults, do the standing up for him if they so chose. He wasn't an idiot, so he would not be sassing anyone or breaking any rules, and OF COURSE he had read the rules before coming to class, apparently unlike some of the others who were now doing things like taking long walks and doing pushups. He would not be taking any chances.
Benji usually didn't like to participate verbally in class -- it made him feel a bit shy having everyone look at him when he answered -- but he felt like if there was any class for it, this was it. He certainly did not want to be on Professor Fletcher's bad side. He was kind of scary, after all, scarier than most adults were.
He raised his hand and waited until called upon to offer his opinion. "Well, Professor, I'm not sure that I think pyromancy can't be accurate, but I think user error could certainly prevent or impede its accuracy. Flames move very quickly, and I think it could be easy to mistake or misread something in them since you only see it for a fraction of a second before it moves." Benji, whose weakest subject was indeed Divination, knew that he would probably run into this struggle if they were meant to try pyromancy tonight, which made him a bit nervous. He was also a bit anxious waiting to see whether this answer was acceptable, and he bit his lower lip nervously without even realizing he was doing it.
Another student who had earned his approval. He'd shown up and done everything that was expected of him without question or defiance. It really wasn't that hard. If he knew the boy's reasoning, he would have shot right to the head o the class. It was solid and sound.
Just as sound was his answer. A promising young man, this one was. "A good answer, thank you, Mr. Park. There is always a margin for human error that can make even the most accurate practices, inaccurate. It takes a keen mind--sharpening the mind. Focus. Discipline. If your mind is elsewhere or you don't pay close enough attention you may indeed miss what the flames are telling you."

Push ups, walking, running. Even Derf had to. She watched him, silently hoping he made it back in time so he wouldn't have to... serve detention, or whatever Fletcher was going to make them do.
She was only slightly relieved when he started class. To be honest, she was a little scared to speak because Professor Fletcher seemed like the kind of guy who would publicly humiliate those who got answers wrong, and she did not want that.
So she sat in silence, pen at the ready to take notes.
Another silent one. Was an opinion really that hard to find?
"I do hope this contemplative silence is indication you're gearing up to answer the next question, Ms. McKinley." He said carefully, his tone indicating his words were not at all suggestions to be taken lightly. He was not teaching sacks of flour. He expected input.

Oh, okay. So with the arrival of Scrimgeour and Fletcher, they'd be going through a physical training to prepare them for the military. He'd finally figured it out!
...
As the last students arrived, Daehyun had prayed they all went to their designated seats, but a couple more still got punished.
As for pyromancy, he wasn't all too eager to have it taught by this man. What if he actually snapped and threw them into that bonfire?! He hoped even Fletcher wasn't allowed to go to such lengths to punish them for Merlin knows what else. Sometimes it came in handy to have a rich imagination, but this time, it caused him to hesitate when raising his hand. "I think a reason for which pyromancy might not be accurate is an external factor. For example, if the wind blew right now, it would alter the shape of the flames," he ended almost questioningly, since he wasn't sure where he was going with it.
Okay, time to go back to existing to a minimum. It was actually not a bad idea.
"Another good point, one that should very much be taken into consideration before performing pyromancy outside." Tonight the weather was being cooperative. The wind wasn't something they would have to worry too much about but the man was still pleased the boy had raised the point.
"If the flames are distorted by their environment, it can most certainly lead to false readings." And those could quickly lead to disaster. "However it should be noted that wind interfering with the flames can and often is read as a bad omen."

Now she had to worry about physical activity in lessons too? Well....technically she wouldn't if she did what she was meant to do but wooooow.
For her part, Jessa remained standing before her log seat, noting the student leaders had had their punishment doubled but obviously not inclined to say anything about it. In fact, she had nothing to say about any of this. Nope. No talking out of turn here, she had nothing pressing that needed to be uttered...even if she did feel bad for that one first year who'd only been trying to greet Abra. Poor thing looked terrified. This Ravenclaw was content to not have to be running laps or breaking a sweat.
She listened through his introduction, finding herself even less inclined to speak by the time he got to the question but something told her she'd only bring more attention to herself by NOT answering so tentatively she raised her hand and waited to be acknowledged. "Ancient seers back in the days of animal sacrifices used to watch the flames while the sacrifices were being done. I think......to....figure out what the gods were saying....?" She hesitated closer to the end, not being able to remember if she actually read that bit somewhere, but she knew for sure about the sacrifices.
She'd just...go quiet again.
He nodded at the Head Girl's response. Amazing what could happen when she stopped being entitled and applied herself. "Yes. In ancient times while sacrifices were being made to their gods, the seers would frequently try to interpret their responses either through the flames themselves or the smoke the fire emits."

Unlike the other students though, she had simply tucked her bookbag behind the long and stayed there. Standing, almost leaning her wait into the log behind her. She had heard a lot of things of course over the years about Divinations from her mother and Laurel…so maybe she could use tonight to explain her slight experience in the topic?
Chewing her lip she remained silent as the people around her raised their hands and brought up their beliefs. Finally, when there was a still in the air and a still in the students about her she raised her hand. ”Professor, Pyromancy was commonly used in Greek Society…the virgins at the temple of Athena in Athens commonly used it as well as followers of Hephaestus” she paused for a second ”however it also depends on what you consider pyromancy to be…as technically Capnomancy or divination by smoke is a form of Pyromancy…my er favorite is Alomancy or divining through throwing salt into fire” she admitted before casting her eyes around to look to see if Salty was there.
He’d make fun of her for that for sure.
She'd been going good until the 'however'. "It's not what I consider to be pyromancy, Ms. Greyvson. It's a set art. I believe what you mean to say is that within the overarching art, their are smaller divisions." Or perhaps she'd been hoping he would be more specific on the branch he was inquiring of but there was nothing to be specific about. "For now, I'm accepting stories from any of the subdivisions." If someone had an event regarding alomancy he would listen with the same interest as someone recalling another event about osteomancy.
"But you've raised some good points." He continued, hoping others were paying attention, especially those who had nothing to say themselves. "There have been notable groups of people who followed the practice in Greek society."

And compared to some students, Dorian was glad he had corrected his mistake so quickly because now he had not need to join the others doing their punishments.
As the class officially began and the reason for the fire was explained, Dorian could already hear his father's voice in his head wanting to pull him out of class immediately. His father had pyrophobia so that was understandable. Dorian however was perfectly fine with it.
As his blue eyes looked at the flames, he tried to think of an story, fictional or not before he put his hand up to answer the question.
"They think that back in ancient times that the followers of this greek god of fire" whatever his name was "Used to practice pyromancy"
He offered the Ravenclaw a nod of confirmation. "Correct, Mr. Katharos. As Ms. Greyvson said, followers of the Greek god if fire and the forge, Hephaestus, were also known to take part in this form of divination."

Because of this, he was relieved when Jessa turned up too, and he greeted her wave with a small smile of his own. Then Lucas appeared and........ oh. Oh no. He'd just... oh.
Eyes widening slightly in alarm, Abra looked towards Fletcher to see how he would react, and found that he was right to be worried. 25 push-ups for saying hello to someone that wasn't the professor? That seemed... a little extreme. He looked towards Lucas, concern and guilt etched on his face - because it had definitely been his fault that the first year had spoken to him, at least in his own mind - and bit his lip as he watched him start those push-ups, but didn't dare to say anything. Abra did, however, make a mental note to borrow a chocolate frog from Derf (he'd replace it eventually) to give to Lucas later, to try and pick his spirits up a bit.
But at least the first year hadn't been alone in those consequences; a good portion of the class were made to go walking or do push-ups for talking or not greeting the professor or for sitting straight down (Abra was relieved that he'd gone with staying standing, and in retrospect it seemed bizarre that he'd even considered the idea that the rules didn't still apply out here). All in all, Abra felt almost lucky that he had fretted so much over the class rules, because ultimately that had led to him following them so closely.
When the class got underway, Abra was a little anxious to find that he didn't know how to answer Fletcher's question. He also didn't want to risk not giving any answer, which meant having to give an opinion on the accuracy of Pyromancy. Uhhhh.
Abra raised his hand, just a touch tentatively. "Uh, well I think... it's a bit like when you look at clouds, isn't it? Different people see different shapes when they look at the same clouds, they interpret the same thing differently. So, if you're looking for shapes in flames or smoke, which move really quickly anyway, it's going to depend on the person who's doing the looking..." He did his best not to make his statement sound like a question. "So maybe it's not so accurate. But probably if someone who has the Sight tries pyromancy, it'll be more accurate for them than for someone who hasn't got it." And, no, he no longer believed that he himself was a Seer; his Bad Feelings™ were because of his anxiety and other things, and they didn't foreshadow bad stuff. That was just life happening.
Yet another student to receive a nod from the man. "Very good, Mr. Botros. Perspective does make this art just a little harder to accurately carry out. One might see a windmill and another may see nothing at all. Having the sight most definitely aids with this, as does a focused mind."
It could take literal years to develop the kind of ready mind that was needed and even then with other factors present, it was entirely possible to get separate readings.

He found he didn't like it, and it left a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach. He had always been lousy with the theory part of Divination, so when the professor guy asked the question...and Lucas didn't know the answer...he kept quiet, at least at first. Plus they were SO many other smart people in class. Like Jessa. She was always smart, wasn't she? And poor Maxton looked exhausted....ugh. Lucas was glad he didn't have to do any pushups or..anything. At least he knew how to do them, yeah? He shifted uncomfortably on his....log, and raised his hand. "Well, there's a bunch of different KINDS of pyromancies, I think, and that could affect the accuracy of using it. Because how can something inconsistent produce consistent results?" Wasn't there a kind that used salt...another that used plants and another that focused on the smoke...yada yada YADA. That was the best Lucas had at the moment.
This one however got a raise of his brow--for several reasons. Firstly, "Having various sub-divisions doesn't make something inconsistent, Mr. Choi." Ignoring the fact he'd just said the word "pyromancies". Why would he even come to such a nonsensical conclusion? "Once you know the form you're using, you can receive consistent results. I don't expect you'd be throwing salt into the fire to read the smoke. Transfiguration has several sub-branches and charms has a second branch known as dark charms. Would you consider either to be inconsistent?"
Pause. "But more importantly, who gave you permission to sit?" He questioned, taking just one step closer to the boy after seeing him shift on the log. Hadn't he learned his lesson from the others?
"You will drop and give me 25 push ups then remain standing for the rest of the lesson." Honestly.

He ran over the list of rules in his head when. Not overly so, and not quite on purpose, but Jackson was standing at attention hoping to not be the subject of Professor Fletcher’s wrath (if that would indeed prove to be an issue). As the professor started the lesson, Jackson had to hold back a smile because he actually found the man's rule about chit chat funny. The rule itself was fine, honestly, and Jackson understood it... but this performance was tickling Jackson's funny bone. Not that this was the time to show his teeth, you know? He looked at his classmates and told himself, See? This is why we read rules... before reminding himself that he was a Prefect and should have a better hand on the claws at least.
The next question had definitely made Jackson fall silent... silenter... more silent... the most silence
He had a feeling that an answer involving cartoon shows he liked in the Muggle world were going to suffice, so Jackson chose to answer the other question. He rose his hand and when it was his turn to speak, Jackson cleared his throat a little before prefacing. "Sir, I can't say that I have much knowledge in pyromancy, but I trust forms of Divination that I can confirm with another set of eyes. If you see this, it means that. Things we can look up and get a consistent answer of what it means. If pyromancy is looking into flames and interpreting what you see, I would say I want a second opinion because my eyes see things all the time but flames can trick you." Was that... Was that clear at all? Jackson fell silent, having decided he had nothing to add right now.
That......admittedly was an interesting take on it. There was a moment's pause before the man replied.
"Thank you, Mr. Thomas. It's good when you can accept your short comings and know when it's best to get a more professional opinion on readings. Flames can be a little tricky to read and the human mind has a way of spiraling things out of proportion if allowed."
If he knew his eyes had a tendency to see things then it was just as well he let someone else read the fire with him. Just in case.

What was one empty log?
With no thought for the consequences, Józef continued along the path, with absolutely 0 plan of returning to the lesson.
Of course he'd noticed that Mr. Kowalski still had his bag on when he left but the man would give him some time before considering him a walk out.
Every now and then, Fletcher looked down to his watch, only somewhat concerned when several students had returned and he had not. With the class now in full swing, he waited just another moment before deciding he would be seeing the Gryffindor later.
He was going to wish he had come back to class.

Point loss and detentions didn’t scare her. She was Zoryn Amari Spinnet for crying out loud. If anything he should have been scared of HER.
After a few wasted seconds, the Gryffindor turned on her heels. Angrily. She had half a mind to count back 30 bluebell flames and then keep counting until she was all the way back up to the castle. Might as well skip class all together seeing as their Professor was an Idiot Sandwich.
Zoryn made sure he HEARD her count too. If he was going to make her look stupid in front of everyone then she wasn’t going down quietly. “TWENTY NINE, TWENTY EIGHT…” All the way until she hit thirty. He said to count. And he never said it shouldn’t be done out loud. Merlin, did she sure hope that she was disturbing his internal peace.
When she made it back she looked him dead-in-the-eyes, and put on the most FORCED smile she could muster as if to say ‘I hate you and you are balding’.
"Hello, Professor. Lovely to see you," there was perhaps a light lacing of sarcasm in her voice. But she could have done so much worse.
The fact that his ugly face was the last one they'd see before bed tonight should have been illegal.
And then she dropped to the floor and did twenty five push-ups with impeccable form. Given the fact that she played beater, her upper body strength was incredible. However, given the early wake up calls and the late lessons, AND the fact that she was only given THREE MINUTES.. She was exhausted. But Zoryn REFUSED to let it show because if there was anything that could be said about Zoryn Spinnet, it was that she was stubborn as HECK.
As for the question, Zoryn didn’t answer. She still needed a few moments to quietly catch her breath from the three minutes she spent running and doing pushups.
And another with a penchant for the dramatics.
Did he mind her yelling while she counted? Not at all, it gave him a play by play of her whereabouts. Ms. Spinnet was the one student he didn't have to actively question the whereabouts of. He knew when she got there, he could tell she was heading back. The man might have thanked her--in fact. "Very prudent of you, Ms. Spinnet. Good thinking on your part, well done. I was able to track you while you did the exercise. It put my mind at ease to know how diligently you were working." Really even if only to ruffle her feathers slightly.
"Good evening to you, too."
He watched her get her push ups done, noting it wasn't quite as energetic as the girl herself tended to be. Her silence afterwards he would attribute to fatigue rather than defiance, for her sake.
"I expect you'll have more to say next question." Yes, he did.

She hurried back, a little winded, but getting back just before the class started. ”Good evening Professor Fletcher.” She said politely, trying to hide how shaken she was. She wanted to explain, but didn't think it was wise so she left it at the greeting and went right back to her assigned spot.
She listened carefully, taking in every word the Professor said. She felt shaken all over again when she realised she would have to give an answer in front of everyone, and feared the consequences if she gave an unfavourable answer.
She timidly raised her hand. ”Some ancient muggle cultures would use pyromancy during sacrifices. They believed the images they saw in the flames were messages from the gods. Based on what they saw, they would determine if their sacrifice was favourable or not, and what blessings or hardships the gods would be sending them. I don't know enough to know if those specific instances had any accuracy, but I believe everyone is born with a given skill set. If someone truly has the gift for pyromancy, then I believe it can be used accurately.” She explained, feeling faint again.
"Good evening. Ms. Destler." He replied to the First Year upon her return. He could tell she was a little winded but was pleased she'd returned in time for the lesson to begin. She wouldn't have been too happy otherwise.
"And yes, you're correct." The walk might have done her brain some good, getting those cogs turning. "The flames were a means of communication with their gods, serving as the means of interpreting their answers to the prayers of the people and passing along any messages they may have wanted to pass along to the people. It gave them an understanding of whether they had good or bad days coming."

As people started to answer the question Chloe tried to come up with something to say so she could maybe not look so dumb. That was her biggest goal this term was to prove she was a Ravenclaw and prove she was smart enough to be here, but really she didn't know the answer and she was scared of this man and scared to say anything wrong.
She had to say something though, it had to do with something they were doing outside. Was it the fire or the stars? She looked up at the sky.
Maybe the moon?
Listening to others she decided it had to be the fire, everyone was saying fire, weren't they? Derf confirmed it as he spoke. She went to raise her hand, but quickly put it down again, everyone seemed to have answered the question, so maybe she would wait until the next one.
He hadn't noticed her at first, too busy handing out punishments to others but the raise of her hand caught his attention and immediately brought a scowl to his expression. "Correct me if I'm wrong, Ms. McCarthy," Which he most certainly was not, "but I don't recall giving you permission to sit." His tone was icy as he appraised the young girl.
"I hope you've had your fill of that seat because you will stand for the remainder of the lesson. That is, of course, after you drop and give me 25 push ups. Be quick about it, we'll be moving to the next question soon and you're silence this round is assurance enough that you will respond to the next." Oh yes she would if she knew what was good for her.

But she wasn't here and what her mom didn't know didn't hurt her. Just as long as Lucille didn't burn herself or the entire castle down. Though, if the castle burned down with everyone in it then Luce could claim she wasn't at fault and so she wouldn't be blamed and...

Her fingers tapped her thigh and her heart fluttered. Nah. She wasn't equipped to answer. She was a first year! First year daughter of a MUGGLE!
And she honestly didn't know much soooooooo...
He looked over the First Year, now somewhat put off because of the last student. "Has your brain shut down for the evening, Ms. Calavarez? Is an opinion so hard for you to form?" He chided. Not knowing the answer to the first question he would accept, but could she not tell him whether or not she thought pyromancy was an inaccurate art? All it required was a little introspection.
Merlin, these students. "I expect an answer to the next question."

Though he gave no sign of protest - nor in the shaming he assumed was to be made about being grouped with first years who were also receiving the same form of punishment. Everyone was in this whole...whatever Hogwarts was right now together. Sooooooo he was mostly unfazed. Not like he had outright ignored the man either but lesson learned and, well, Derf was never opposed to a little running.
Though he was becoming increasing uncomfortable with this whole exercise as punishment as it, well, had super destructive potential. Exercise, quidditch, was Derf's coping mechanism...and it felt like these men were trying to strip him of that. Of ALL of them, really, since they were instead only learning to view exercise as a punishment.
At least with S.O.R.E they were given the option to take their time, technically, as long as it got done. Walking okay and all.
Still, without protest, Derf slipped his bag off and left it beside his seat. "Sure thing, Professor," he chirped, almost giddy like, and then ventured a glance over towards his 60 bluebells jogging mate. "Race ya," he grinned just before taking off out of the 'classroom' set up and down the path.
One bluebell...two bluebells...three bluebells...
Pyromancy though, which was still what he assumed the subject was, made him think about the fire salamanders he had been taking care of with Professor Wayland and made him wonder a thing or two about differences in magical flames versus the mundane sort when it came to performing readings. While slightly unrelated, he also recalled hearing Vivian talk about someone she knew at Durmstrang who had pyrokinesis...or something like that. Was that what they were going to do today? Straight up fire or like...were they going to BURN stuff?
21 bluebells...22 bluebells...23 bluebells...

What was this MADNESS???? Max gaped at the Professor and the ridiculous orders he was handing out. Was he really getting kids to do PUSH UPS!? And did he really have to walk all the way back to the 60th bluebell flame only to come back again!? For not greeting the dude??? He was tempted to brazenly point out that he hadn’t been spoken to yet and therefore he was simply following Fletcher’s dumb rules but he swiftly thought better of it.
With all the exasperated huffing and puffing of an even more irritable than normal teenage boy, Max set off after Derf. Not nearly as enthusiastically though. How the Hufflepuff seemed chipper at a time like this was beyond him, but there was no way he was about to race so he let the other boy go ahead.
He’d just counted the fourteenth bluebell - or was it the fifteenth??? sixteenth??? - when he was struck with a brilliant idea. He was just going to hang about here, wait for Derf to come back and then head back to the bonfire by the lake with him. Fletcher would never know.
Genius.

Wait, what?
So engrossed in his on thoughts about a potential connection with pyromancy and alchemy, Derf had continued to absentmindedly count bluebell flames without reeeeeally counting them. The numbers entering his brain and leaving them just as quickly. Which, er, meant he really ought to turn around and head back then. But where was Maxton?
Panic sunk in a bit, considering location and all, and the Hufflepuff was pivoting around so quickly that his foot slipped in the mud and he nearly fell in his haste. Wand out as he SPRINTED now, Derf kept a careful eye out for the Slytherin and...well...and whatever else may be out here. Because honestly, considering last term holding an evening class on the grounds near the Black Lake and leaving students unsupervised while performing counter intuitive physical punishments? Well, he could spiral about all that once he found Maxton.
And THANKFULLY he did and not all that far from the start.
Wait...what? How?
Though Derf supposed it made sense considering he had run WELL beyond where he had been expected to run - though he had still made excellent time regardless. "Hey! Thanks for waiting for me," he said with a grin as he slowed his jog to an almost walk. "Let's head back now, yeah?"

And just when he was about to give up and venture further up the path, Derf made an appearance. Perfect timing. Phew.
“Uhhhh, of course… sure, no worries,” he responded when the Hufflepuff thanked him for waiting. With a nod, he set off back in the direction of the bonfire despite his feet wanting nothing more than to go in the opposite direction and take him straight to his bed.
It didn’t take long to return seeing as he hadn’t ventured very far in the first place and Derf had probably ran the entire way. Max gave his hair a quick ruffle….. y’know, trying to achieve that windswept ‘I just did a bunch of exercise’ look. Gotta keep up appearances.
Ahem.
“Good evening, Professor Fletcher,” he announced, trying his utmost keep his voice neutral and void of any sarcasm.
There. Would that suffice?
The Hufflepuff got some sort of look for his enthusiasm at the idea of running and the way he bolted off but the man brushed it off. So long as the activity was done and the boys returned within reasonable time.
While they were gone, he distracted himself with the others he'd had to hand out punishment too, settling his attention on them once they returned. "Good evening Mr. Carden, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne." He returned to them both, satisfied they'd gotten it right this time around.
He paused a moment, noticing only one of the two bothered to answer the question when the lesson started. "Has the small run left you incapable of thought, Mr. Carden?" Was he not going to answer the question?

With a nod of her head she started off back down the pathway and began counting the blue bells as she went, only realizing she needed to pick up her pace or she would be FORCED to do push ups, probably. And really, there was no upper body strength in her spaghetti noodle arms so that was no ideal.
Picking up her pace she started a brisk jog which turned into a run as she went along, being careful to count the bluebells as she went. And it was not until she got to the thirtieth that she paused to catch her breath, but she dare not stand around too long. Turning, she blinked the tears back from her eyes, tears that she had not even realized were there, and started her jog/run back. This was RUBBISH. All of it. She had never had a professor punish her for anything. Ever. Especially when she was following his rules. THE RULES HE SET. Don't speak unless spoken to, it said. And she just assumed he didn't want anyone speaking to him. Oh Merlin... this was crushing her soul.
Wiping her face and clearing her throat, she came to a stop and greeted the PROFESSOR, "Ah... Good evening Professor." She only hoped her voice didn't wobble when she had spoken. And then she, as awkward as ever, gave the man a small curtsy before rushing back to her seat... and not quite sitting down yet. SHE HAD NO IDEA IF IT WAS ALLOWED YET OR NOT!! And she had no answer to his question because she had been running down the pathway when he asked... SO she simply stood there trying not to cry.

Picking up the pace to a casual jog for purposes of reentry, Derf offered the Divination professor a genuine grin - they could thank endorphins or something - as he greeted him. "Good evening, Professor Fletcher."
Returning to his seat, to stand, beside Penny, and noting her obviously distraught appearance, he attempted to offer her some sort of reassuring smile but dared not do anything more than that should the man see fit to punish her further.
....that is...until they were given word to sit, which he did, and she was still standing. Then and only then did he speak more and in a hushed whisper. "Psssst. Penny," he hissed as he subtly as possible reached over to tug on her hand while the professor spoke. "You can sit down now." In fact she SHOULD sit down now. So he gave her hand another gentle but firm tug for good measure.

Perhaps it was due to the ringing in her ears and the fact that she was still emotionally distraught from the whole situation... but it wasn't until Derf tugged her hand that she sat down hard on her assigned log. She dared not to speak in return and quickly took her hand back because touching her right now was just going to make her cry for sure. What was it about someone asking 'Are you okay' or merely touching her that made her flood gates for tears open wide. Luckily she was able to take a few deep breaths and open her eyes up comically wide to keep that at bay.
For now.
And she didn't have an answer for the horrible man because, frankly, she was still not comprehending much, seeing as she was likely on the verge of hyperventilating.

Squirming just a bit on his log, Derf set his thoughts to trying to recall all the internal ramblings he had had in his head while on his brisk jog counting bluebell flames. He eventually remembered SOMETHING, and his hand was up in the air waiting until it was his turn to speak. "Since pyromancy...depending on the variation and stuff...is studying either the flame itself or the way in which some materials burn and react to flame...I think there is there a correlation between it and alchemy. Like...with that one science element. The one where you analyze a material by burning it and seeing what colors are produced."
"Good evening, Ms. Goodman." He replied to her greeting, oblivious to any tears that may have been in her eyes or any panic that may have been setting in for her. What he DID notice, was her silence. "Your silence was what sent you running in the first place, Ms. Goodman. I suggest you have an answer to the next question."
As for the Hufflepuff Prefect who was....was.......the man blinked, uncertain of what he was seeing. Had the boy just.....sat??? He was on a roll tonight. First the lack of courtesy with the greeting, then not answering the question--as he was about to address--and now this? Calvin wasn't sure this boy was real at all. A figment of his imagination perhaps. "Next time, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne, I expect you to respond to the question that was actually asked." Was that really so har--
Did he just....had he really.....? Now the girl was sitting too? Circe, was this all really happening? What willful children they were turning out to be.
"What do you both think you're doing? Up, now. 25 push ups each and you will remain standing until the end of the lesson. As for you, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne, I don't know what's gotten into you tonight. I don't know what sense of entitlement has led to these actions but we'll find out when I see you in detention tomorrow evening." He'd had just about enough of these student leaders setting the WRONG example.
Calvin waited until the last of them had finished rattling off their responses. Some.....stronger than others. Some....more silent than others but if he spent the night nitpicking at everything they would never get anywhere. "You may be seated, those of you who were diligent enough to remain standing up until this point, that is." Those who'd followed that rule were given the privilege of sitting for what was likely going to be a long hour for many.
"Pyromancy has long been accepted as one of the first, if not the first form of divination. As some of you mentioned, it was a means of communicating with the gods of that time and aided with appeasing them. If they were angry that message could be deciphered in the flames and sacrifices could be offered. If they were pleased, it signaled a period of prosperity. Greek was one civilization in particular that delved into the practice however there have been other instances throughout history in which pyromancy has made its appearance."
Were they taking notes? Did they need to? This should really be revision for most. "Fiction has also seen it fit to portray this art, not always as accurately but muggle fiction in particular has been known to be ignorant toward the real workings of magic. Tales of witches dancing around fires. Great heroes using flames to decipher their victories in battle." They got the idea.
"It can be one of the trickier forms of divination, as a few others of you have mentioned, namely for the fact it is dependent on what the reader sees in the flames. Smoke reading, for instance, is one of the less arbitrary forms as it has very clear signs. Thick, dark smoke is known to be a bad omen. The average person can tell when the smoke they are looking at is thick and dark versus smoke that is clear and travels straight upward--a good omen. Something like seeing images in the flames would more likely bring on the issue of different perspectives. Two different individuals could look at the same fire and see different things."
Still following?
"Moving on!" He said firmly, getting the attention of anyone who may have spaced during that part of the discussion. "What do you know about a typical pyromancy session? Practices? Things to be avoided? Anything you might find strange. The symbols. Methods." Those who'd been silent before had used up that get out of jail free card.
OOC: Okay, question 2 is up! Basically, anything your character might know about the going ons of a regular fire reading session. Maybe something about the smoke or the prep or just about anything while in the middle of that reading. Doesn't have to be right, all answers welcome! I'll move the class again in 24 ish hrs

Bel would have preferred getting to sit next to some friends, but in general she was happy enough sitting with anyone, so it didn't bother her too much to have her seat assigned. Divination was still one of those classes she wasn't completely SURE about but so far she thought Professor Fletcher definitely came across as knowledgeable and she could respect that. The push ups? She watched the kids who got given them work through them out of the corner of her eye. That..... wasn't too bad of a thing. She'd rather get given them than have house points taken. Not that she'd try the professor on anything intentionally since that wasn't her nature but.... yeah. She could do push ups. And chin ups for that matter. All this fitness-related stuff going on lately? Totally up her alley. No complaints here whatsoever.
With her robes tightly tucked around herself for warmth against the Scottish air, Bel took notes with her book balanced on one knee. This was interesting stuff. She didn't really know a lot about this specific stuff but.... she put her hand up to try and contribute something anyway.
"Professor, I don't know much about this kind of pyromancy because they didn't really do this same thing back home in 'stralia, but there IS a lot of fire-use there traditionally amongst the different indigenous peoples. Some tribes burned eucalyptus leaves as part of cleansing rituals for instance. So I think depending on where in the world the traditions are, it means different leaves or herbs or whatever might be used, ya know? Because I guess fire needs to be fueled.... so if you want your fire to have some kind of specific ritual or magical purpose, you probably have to fuel it with the right stuff. So I think... what I'm getting at is to control a fire you have to control its fuel, whether that's magical fuel like from someone's intent or some kind of mundane fuel or something else." Bel reasoned out. It made sense to her anyway.

Rylee had been here the entire time, having greeted the Professor and fallen quiet or as quiet as she could handle (which meant rocking on her feet ever so slightly until told to sit). Everything that was said and that happened was being observed. Her brother having to do push-ups for sitting... her friends having to go back so many blue-bell flames and return for not greeting the professor properly. All things were being filled away in her brain somewhere for later use.
As the first question was asked the third year pulled out some parchment and her quill opting to take notes for the moment. By the time the second question was asked she was ready. Raising her hand she answered when it was her turn. "When the flames of the fire begin to die down the pyromancer studies the pictures he sees in the still burning coals. If one picture stands out more than the rest and burns brighter than the others it brings good fortune." That was about all she really knew on it. Divination wasn't exactly her best class.

Just when she thought the shock of this man's methodology was beginning to wear off, Jessa found her eyes widening. First, because Derf was sitting and it had her breath getting lodged firmly in her throat, then because of the moment she knew would come. The moment the Professor noticed and did something about it.
This wasn't her friend's night at all.
Still, she would not speak out of turn. The Ravenclaw shot her friend a sympathetic look as she finally sat but tried not to think too much about the turn this lesson had steadily been taking. Nope nope nope. For a brief moment, Jessa mentally went over all the rules again, trying to make sure she didn't cross any. Her arms were not made to hoist the rest of her up even once, let alone 25 times.
Not wanting to be stuck staring at the man while he spoke, Jessa took out her parchment and quill and began scribbling the things she for the most part already knew. Avoiding his gaze was now one of her priorities.
Having heard his reaction to the silent students, she found herself raising her hand, even before her brain could properly formulate an answer. Had to be on the safe side. Finally, something came. "If...if the coals glow it's thought to bring good or great fortune." For whatever reason.
Aaaand right back to not making a peep.

Luce's cheeks and nose turned bright red from being called out for being silent. But she took with straight shoulders and a nod. He was the adult, right? Right.
"My brain is functioning well...Sir," she said, somewhat controlling a quiver in her voice. Her legs though...those lil' sticks were trembling away. "I simply didn't have an opinion," she added quietly. So really, why waste his time, y'know?
Luce nodded anyway. A response. He wanted a response. Well...he IS the adult soooo...
Ignoring the hard thumping that now flooded her ears thanks to that EMBARRASSING moment, the young witch listened...

Ignorant? Who he calling ignorant? Muggles? MUGGLES?
Luce's eyebrows pinched together. Her hand slowly, but decisively slid up into the air. "Can they be considered ignorant if they didn't believe in the real works of magic? If they hadn't been properly educated in it?" she asked, that tremble making itself present.
If muggles had been properly taught about magic maybe their world would be different.
And maybe she paid more attention to that because mom IS a muggle and the word ignorant did not just go along with her.

Professor Fletcher’s little dig at him for not answering the question mostly went unnoticed because Max was more shocked that the bloke was still dishing out punishments. This time push ups for Derf and Penny for sitting before being given the permission to. Blimey.
But they DID have permission to now, so Max sat himself down on his log and tried his hardest to make it look like he was concentrating. Concentrating wasn’t an easy task though. Bonfires just made him think of roasting marshmallows and sausages and thinking of food was making his tummy rumble.
“Uhm… I read this book once, and there was this one character who could control fire with his mind,” Max piped up, raising his hand. “And he could manipulate it however he wanted and create huge fireballs and whirlwinds and no-one really stood a chance against him and it was totally cool and……. no wait, I think that was called pyrokinesis.”
Not pyromancy. Ooops.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Recently, Divination had become a slightly difficult subject for her. It seemed like her interest had waned. At Professor Fletcher's question, she thought long and hard before carefully raising her hand to answer.
"There is a form of pyromancy called Daphnomancy which takes its name from the Greek mythological story of Apollo and Daphne. Daphnomancy is the burning of laurel leaves."
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
This lesson was getting more and more interesting by the second. Not the subject it self, that was pretty...boring. But the things that happened around it. More students were ordered to do pushups and Dorian had almost laughed out loud when one of the slytherin first years said that her brain was functioning well. Come on, even he found that funny. Rude, yes...but funny. In any other class he would have masked the laugh as a cough but in this class he simply bit his lower lip to not make a sound and stared at the fire, pretending to be concentrating.
And then he looked back up in curiousity when he heard the Professor say Derf's name and detention. Merlin's Beard what had that Prefect gotten himself in to now? He felt kind slightly bad for the guy but ...not really. And now he felt like a bad person because it had been Derf who had helped him out during the first SORE training.
Anyway, when they were told to finally sit down, the Ravenclaw did so and after some thinking about the next question he put his hand up. And then lowered it back down because someone else had said what he had wanted to say and he didn't think that the Professor would appreciate repeated answers.

He'd been about to remind her that he didn't ask for a definition as he'd just more or less provided one but thankfully she got to the point soon after that. Well, actually, she was paying attention. But whatever. He seemed quite in his element being sadistic, as was evident by how he responded to her peers. It was one thing to be strict and orderly, it was quite another to humiliate people. Her face didn't change a beat as he spoke down to her, but on the inside she was picturing how she would grab his wand and cram it up his nose.
Hanna, seeing how people were treated if they didn't give an answer, decided just to use her previous one. It wasn't good enough then, but perhaps it would be now. She raised her hand again and said "One thing to be avoided, Professor, would be getting burnt by the fire."

Since he'd been unsure of the things he'd blabbered, Daehyun let out a sigh in relief when the professor moved on to the next student after deeming his answer a correct one. And thank Merlin they were allowed to sit, because his legs were soon turning to jelly. All that morning running was taking its toll on him. It was one thing to wake up early, but stay in bed and read a bestiary, and something entirely different to wake up early to run.
Now, his knowledge of pyromancy was rather limited, but he did know this one thing, so he raised his hand. "I know of this one technique - you can write something, or a question, on a piece of paper and burn one corner. It's a bad omen if the paper is completely destroyed." And it was basically pyromancy for dummies, what he'd just said, but he didn't fail to notice the way Fletcher eyed the silent ones, so he thought he'd give it a try.
Though saying dumb things won't get him far, either.

This had got to be the first time ever that Faith was not enjoying a Divination lesson. She felt something inside her die a little every passing day, this term, and with the progression of this lesson it felt all the more that her decision to take Divination had been a mistake. She'd chosen to continue at NEWT level because it was the only subject without a theoretical portion, but was it worth being terrified stiff in class?
The Gryffindor had planned to say nothing in response to the question, hugging her knees to her chest instead and trying not to breathe too deeply, in case she'd start coughing, but the fact that nobody brought up salt was starting to bother her.
"We're meant to sprinkle salt onto the embers once the fire dies, and it's important to step away quickly, and wait for the spitting to stop before trying to read the coals. Many pyromancers have burned themselves being too eager."
Or, at least, that's what she remembered reading for her OWLs. But Faith's memory wasn't the best, and it really wouldn't do to count on her to have the right answer.
Zachary honestly couldn't believe his luck. Divination was one of his weak subjects and pairing THAT with this clown as their teacher - he just knew he'd be kicked out of the class soon enough.
But so far so good.
When a question was asked again, Zachary was reluctant to speak up - but what choice did he have? Clearly being in the background wasn't going to cut it for this class. So the fairly new Slytherin, finally pushed himself to speak, "you need to know how to practise a certain level of meditation too - in order to be able to be able to see clearly and contemplate what you see once the fire has died down"
Or so he vaguely remembered his mother rambling on about it.

Errr.
Oops.
Lucas just hadn't been paying attention--he hadn't meant any harm! He wouldn't have been disobeying on PURPOSE or anything--but as soon as the professor tore his answer apart--rightly so, Lucas supposed, since he knew almost nothing about Divination--he simply nodded and did the 25 pushups. With ease, mind you. He wasn't not in shape. Thank you, Baylen Brown, for getting this kid into better shape last term.
As soon as he finished, a little breathless and his arms feeling tingly, he stood up and crossed his arms. He didn't really feel like inputting again, not when what he said would be treated like that. He scuffled his shoe in the dirt a bit and bit his lip. Even if thought FIRE SAFETY WAS A GOOD THING TO MENTION because...some people just should NOT be allowed to be near or use fire ever. Just too dangerous for some folks. He kinda' hoped they'd get to do some pyromancy though because it seemed cool and fun and FIRE duh.
Also, why was Faith so smart? Lucas shot her an encouraging smile as she answered because he wanted her to feel nice about her answer even if Professor Grumpy-face might not do so.

ZORYN WAS LIVID.
He had the AUDACITY to THANK HER? Oh he was good. But she was better. “You’re welcome, Sir,” she managed through gritted teeth. This man was at the top of her list. Once their rebellion took place, he’d be the first target. Zor made sure to make a mental note of this so that she could tell Jessa. She would have broken the rules to whisper to the girl now, but she was still exhausted from her three minute escapade.
And then the Derf thing happened.
ALRIGHT SOMEONE GRAB HER BEATER’S BAT BECAUSE SHE WAS READY TO KNOCK HIS BALDING HEAD RIGHT OFF HIS NECK.
Derf was pretty much the only good person left at this school. It’s not his fault that he just came back from an intense run and thought they were given the cue to sit???? The Gryffindor stole a glance over at Faith, trying to translate SO MANY things within a single look.
If Derf wasn’t allowed to sit then Zoryn wouldn’t be sitting either (anyone else and she wouldn’t have cared too much but Derf wasn’t just ‘anyone else’). Call it the pre-rebellion, if you will. And she’d make a show of it too. He never said anything about standing still.
The Gryffindor swayed side-to-side, swinging her arms around and thinking about his question (not seriously, of course). Things to be avoided? This class. Things she found strange? The fact that hair didn’t grow at the top of his head. She hoped HE’D burn himself from the fire.
“Some practices involve burning herbs, like sage, to analyze symbols in the smoke,” she was going somewhere with this. “Hope that’s what we’re doing… It could help us get rid of the evil spirits looming around the castle this year.” The evil spirits being their balding divinations professor AND the headmaster. That last bit was implied.

As Bettie listened to the professor and took notes she remembered she did know something about pyromancy so Bettie raised her hand. "I think it would be under a practice, this is burning of herbs, as for method a candle, fireplace and could you use a bluebell flame has well? I would say things to avoid would be negative thought and burning of certain herb because some are poisonous and maybe the same for wood."

That was.... rude. Very rude.
Lucas let out another whimper and looked down, finding that concentrating on the ground and his feet was a lot easier than looking at this man. Did he want an answer? Or.... was it a question that he wasn't expecting an answer for? Lucas didn't know. He didn't know about anything in here. All he knew was that right now, he just wanted to be as far away from this lesson and this man as possible.
He just shook his head because uh, answering out of turn might make the man do something bad. Like ask for another 25 pushups. And his arms and legs were still feeling sore from before so he was kind of meeting him halfway. Yeah. Halfway.
When he started talking about pyromancy and what it is and all of that, Lucas reached into his bag and pulled out his notebook and a quill. Taking notes would give him something to do, yeah? Yeah. His notes were sloppy and messy because his hand was shaking but that was okay. It was a lesson still and he wanted to learn about the magic and the fire and what he was here to learn.
It was okay.
And he'd have Emma!cuddles later. He hoped.
But then the Professor man was asking another question and it left him stumped. What did he know about the fire magic? Nothing. Not really. He was here to learn this stuff and if he knew this stuff already, he couldn't need to be here, right? But he couldn't stay silent because he was sure the Professor man would make another rude comment about it - or worse - and he didn't want that.
He looked up, his eyes on the fire in front of him, and it took him a long time to come up with something but he did have an answer. He did! So he slowly raised his hand up in the air, still not looking at the Professor man. "Uh, well, some people like to burn things in the fire. And then they get..... symbols..... from the way the object burns, I guess. And that's how they get their answers....." His voice trailed off when he slowly came to realise how dumb his answer sounded. But it was still an answer, right?
25 pushups?! This bloke was a miser! All because he didn't stay on his feet. Whatever.. He didn't feel like losing anymore points.. He was already on Noble's watchlist. He was sure of it. So, down on his face he went and counted out twenty-five perfect pushups in roughly thirty seconds. Cal was no slouch.. He was well built and strong for his age. Mainly because he was always running and hunting while at home. He wasn't a dough boy that sat and played video games all day.
He took his seat along with everyone else once they were given permission. Which was a minute or two after he'd asked the first question.. Everyone had answered as he was catching his breath.
Stella was paying attention the wole time, to be honest she thought the subject was beyond boring and wanted nothing more to sit down. " Dear god we going to stand here the whole lesson?" she thought to herself. She knew very little about Divinations it wasn't one of her strong points that's for sure. She wasn't all into seeing her future she believed what was meant to happen will happen, no looking into a fire or reading tea leaves would change it. Although their were seers that she knew could read into the future.
Although she knew that if she kept silent the whole time, she was going to have to do push ups, she didn't want to do that! It wasn't like she couldn't do them, she just didn't want to do them. She thought about what she knew about the subject they were talking about, then again she read quite a bit on this subject it was interesting. Waiting for the others she raised her hand. "By reading the flames of a sacrificial fire a prophecy was made for the future and pyromancy was used for centuries to get auguries of the future." she said remembering that she read that somewhere in the book she remembered.

Between running EVERY morning and Quidditch tryouts Juni had enough of running so yes she was going to do her best to follow the rules and stuff. Because her legs were already killing her as it was. The running she did was the running she liked to do and on her own time. And it wasn’t worth losing being captain for anything.
Honestly Juni couldn’t think of anything to contribute to lesson at this moment that wouldn’t get her into trouble. The last thing she needed right now was for her dad to think that she was giving her professors a hard time. Maybe if it wasn’t a divination lesson, those divination professors really thought that they can predict the future with anything. Sure sometimes it comes true but others it might be a chance of luck. Personally Juni didn’t believe most of it. But it was fun making the predictions.
But the second question she kind of had a answer for. ”In a Pyroscopy session, you burn a piece of paper on a white surface and then you examine the stain the paper leaves on the surface.” She nodded, just something a little different to add the class discussion.

Natasha could not express how relieved she felt. After her mistake with the greeting, she was more than relieved that her answer had been correct. She was not overly familiar with pyromancy, but she had looked through all of her books, to at least have a basic idea.
As soon as she was given permission to sit, she wasted no time in sitting. Getting her notebook, she began taking notes immediately, trying to keep up which led to a hasty scribble. She could rewrite it neater at a later time in her free time.
She raised her hand to give her answer. "From what I have read, those practicing pyromancy look for an image that stands out among the others. If none stand out, then they should start over. The medium burned depends on what answers you are looking for, if I recall. I know the appearance of the smoke has meaning as well, but I don't know the different meanings." She explained, knowing her wording could have been better, but she was still shaken and hoped the answer would be acceptable enough. "I've also read that it's important to avoid letting your own emotions cloud your judgement during a session as it can falsely influence what you see, leading to inaccurate interpretations."
Josie blinked, things about pyromancy divination? She tended to stay away from it, considering her father still insisted that telling the future was just voo doo... But she'd decided to be here anyways so might as well try right? The fourteen year paused in thought once more, thinking of the few times she'd watched her aunt do it, "Professor, isn't there some kind of divination with the fire of a candle?"
Did that count as pyromancy? She hoped so as she continued, "Isn't there something, you hold a card over the flame, ask a question quickly before the card can catch fire... and then use the smoke patterns to tell what the answer is to the question?" Hopefully that counted, it used fire after all right? But if not, at least she tried.

............what?
But...hadn't he? The professor had asked for an instance of usage in history and stuff...and Derf was linking it to alchemy and a very real science - which said something about his opinion on accuracy in a way. It was an answer and an opinion all wrapped up into one! How...what?
But before Derf could really say anything else on the subject, a FAR more pressing matter was raised. His quick glance around the classroom after returning had clearly been naive and misguided, seeing some people sitting and his brain filling in the rest. What was worse...he had gotten Penny in trouble as well. So rather than get right to the push ups - which he had no problem with and absolutely refused to let physical exertion take on a negative tone, the Hufflepuff opted to dig himself an even deeper hold.
After raising his hand to speak - you know, don't speak unless spoken too and all that.
"Sir, I apologize..." Sorta. For the sitting at least. And his tone was perfectly sincere - not to mention embarrassed. "...but if I hadn't encouraged Penny to sit then she would still be standing...." Remove him from the equation and the results would be different. And no, he wasn't trying to be a martyr here. Honest to goodness his conscious could not take Penny taking the bull blow of his actions. As for the detention well, that didn't sting as badly as being called entitled. Of all things. Though there was no way to respond to that without coming across entitled, the word was a true no win situation except to fall in line which, well, guess this Hufflepuff had become a bit of a wild Aethonan stallion since the inferi attack last term and was far from being broken. "....and you should get to know me first before assuming I am entitled, sir."
Which he reckoned serving detention would accomplish just fine.
Glancing feebly out of the corner of his eye at Penny in attempt at sending her an apologetic look, the sixth year dropped to the ground and began his set of 25 - arms flexing as his head looked straight ahead at the professors feet with his body in a perfectly straight line. Then it was up and down in a somewhat rapid succession.
As for the answer to the man's question...all Derf really know about was the focus needed - which a few had mentioned including an almost meditative state. Which, well, Derf was somewhat in right now himself as he looked straight ahead and focused on his push ups. Maybe if he looked beyond everything and into the flames he would see his own doom given how this class was going for him.
Also...he didn't see you there Zoryn, but he would feel even worse if you got in trouble because of him as well.

What was going on? What happened to the nice professors that wanted to help them learn and encourage them? This wasn't school, this was Azkaban..
She stood up and tried to fight the big tears she could feel coming in her eyes. Looking around and wiping at her cheek she got down to do the pushups. With every push she felt the tears growing harder and harder to stop.
Once she was finally done she wrapped her arms around herself and stayed standing, but stayed quiet. She didn't know the answer, she was only a second year, she hadn't learned this before it was new. So she had no clue what to say.

Patrick had kept quiet on the first question... only because by the time he had figured his thoughts out Fletcher had moved on. He listened to the responses to students and the pure dislike in the students response sea to Fletcher. He knew that this question he would have to answer. Up to this point in his life had only seen two instances of this type of seeing.
Raising his hand, Patrick waited quietly and patiently to be called on to vocalize his answer. Once called on he took a deep breath, “some of the native tribes in areas of the United States use this method. Their seer goes to a small hut with a vent for smoke. They typically do this for name ceremonies to choose a new horns name. However I don’t see how the tribunal of leaders all see the same thing since it’s often in the interpretation of the seer as to what is seen.”
With furrowed brows Patrick turned his attention to the other students he saw raising their hands here and there. He was a bit unsure of how much sense he made, but figured It would all work out in the way it was supposed to. He turned the pen in his hand before xo inuinf his notes on today’s lesson.
To say Penny's jaw dropped was the understatement of the century. Or like... the biggest understatement of the Universe. Whatever you wanted to classify it as, Penny Lane Goodman was SHOCKED. Beyond belief. This man was... UNBEARABLE!
The tears began to flow freely now as he told her to do PUSH UPS. The mere thought of it had triggered Hufflepuff's anxiety for sure. So as she opened her mouth to try and defend herself she found that all she could do was heave for breath, tears flowing uncontrollably. SHE HAD NEVER BEEN IN TROUBLE IN HER LIFE AND OMG SHE WAS ONLY DOING WHAT HER PREFECT HAD SAID! Despair! It was all too much!
But the young girl did try to give Derf a reassuring smile as he spoke up for her... but she felt the sinking feeling in her stomach that said it was going to do no good. Soooo... she slipped off of the log she was seated on and attempted to get her breathing under control and get in position for push ups. Because she dare not ask to be excused to go to the Healer or to her HoH... or anyone ever. She was genuinely unable to speak as she sobbed and basically just laid on the ground at this point.
Again, the ground could open up and swallow her whole at any time now. She was unsure what was more embarrassing: Being bullied by a Professor for being too literal, or the fact that she was crying and lying on the ground right now.
