Default Divination Lesson 1 - Pyromancy

On this mild, September night you find yourself heading out to the lake for your lesson on the Divine Arts. The path you take is illuminated by blue bell flames, a precaution to ensure no one arrives late with the excuse they'd gotten lost. Such an excuse wouldn't be tolerated, even without the help of the magical fire. Consider yourselves lucky, Fletcher has decided to be generous.

Out by the lake, the Professor stands by what appears to be a large bonfire. Around the fire, is a ring, an age line if you will, ensuring only he could get within a certain distance of the flames. This was him not trusting in the students ability to understand safety on their own. There would be that one kid who wanted to have a close enough look to burn his retinas--and his face long before his inner eye had a chance to suffer that damage.

Not on his watch.

Also surrounding the fire are log seats that seat, up to three students. They all have your names on them, sit out of place and you may find yourself unable to sit for a while, but not in the way you might so rightly be thinking.

Come with your ready minds and leave the roughhousing and lollygagging back in the castle.

OOC: Welcome to the first Divination lesson of the term! I'll be moving the class along in 24 hrs so come on in and get comfy. Just keep in mind the Professor's rules and your character should be fine....or don't

Evening lessons were always interesting... right? Aside from Astronomy, where it was sort of normal to have lessons at night, there was a certain sort of novelty about having a lesson outside of usual teaching hours. Only problem was that it sort of ate up the evening, and Abra liked having his evenings to himself... not that he was going to start complaining about that out loud to the new Divination professor. No thank you.

Having followed the illuminated path down to the lake and the big old bonfire that Fletcher was already standing by, Abra gave the set-up a quick once-over, then turned to look at the professor.

"Good evening, Professor Fletcher," he said as respectfully as he possibly could, before turning his attention to the log seats that surrounded the fire. Upon closer inspection, Abra found names written on each space, and so, without any real enthusiasm, he sought out his own name and paused, standing in front of his seat.

Uh... they weren't in the classroom or anything, but did Fletcher's rule still apply, about remaining standing until told otherwise? Or would they be expected to sit straight away, given this was different to a classroom setting? Would he be berated for questioning what they were supposed to do, in case even considering that the usual rule might not apply got him into trouble? The uncertainty sparked off all kinds of overthinking and anxiety, but ultimately Abra preferred to err on the side of caution, and so stayed standing in front of his log seat, casting an unsure look at the professor.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

It was one thing to have a class you knew was scheduled for the evenings (Astronomy) and another to suddenly have one you knew belonged during the day time now in the evening. It became a mild inconvenience then. Jessa liked her evenings. Before patrols, she could spend some quality time alone in her lab with her babies or find something else to do with her friends. An uncertain art that, for all intents and purposes, couldn’t be proven now encroaching on her night had her just a little......eh about the whole thing.

The Head Girl followed the path the flames made, curious in spite of her own misgivings. For all she knew, this would be another glance into the ball to see your own doom lesson. While those were infinitely entertaining with one Jahan King, he was now graduated and there was no one to senselessly predict her doom with.

It was actually a little depressing to think about. Huh. Maybe attending was a bad idea after all but by the time she got to that conclusion, she could already see the flames of the fire and a certain professor standing there.

What were the odds he’d just let her leave without feeling offended and lashing out? Consider this one experiment she was disinterested in so the young girl simply kept walking until she was by the log seats. “Good evening, Professor Fletcher.” She kept her tone EVEN, not wanting him to read some perceived “disrespect” before waving to Abra. She’d been about to say hello but then remembered that whole.....no talking thing and was sure greeting friends fell under that. As was.....standing....? Even out here? Well if Abra was gonna keep standing, she wasn’t gonna take the chance of sitting. When in Rome, yeah?

Jessa walked the circle until she found a log with her name on it and just.....stood there...

It was a weird time of the day to have a lesson, wasn’t it? Or maybe that’s just how things worked at Hogwarts with all the magic. Maybe evening lessons were normal and he was just...... not used to it because they didn’t have those in St. Woboldo’s.

Still. It was weird.

Lucas walked down the grounds, following the illuminated path. It wasn’t a lesson he was looking forward to, even if it was one he was curious about, but the bluebell flames did cause a cheeky smile to spread across his face. Look at them! This is what you call magical! Maybe they could just have a lesson on this instead of whatever it was the Professor had in mind.

But it turned out that what the Professor has in mind was...... a bonfire????? Well, that’s what Lucas was getting from the huge bonfire that was sitting by the lake and by the, uh, place where the lesson was taking place, it looked like. There was a line, too. Or a ring, to better put it. And the Professor, just standing there.

He walked the last bit to the general area, all the while mentally practising exactly how he was going to greet this new man he didn’t really know and wasn’t sure if he was nice or not. "Hello, Professor," he ended up saying in a quiet voice. Oh and hey! Was that Prefect Abra? He was definitely nice, Lucas knew that by now. It might be because of this that the Gryffindor Prefect received a much more enthusiastic response from the first year, complete with a small wave. "Hey, Abra!" Hello. Hi.

And there was another girl (Jessa) too but seeing as Lucas had no idea who she was, he didn’t really say anything. There was a slightly sheepish smile on his face because she looked like the very important type who shouldn’t be disturbed and he didn’t want to do the disturbing.

Right. Seats. He looked down at the nearest log and, using the light from the bonfire, read two words on there. A name. Not his name, either. Frowning slightly, he shuffled around the bonfire, trying to find a ‘Lucas Dakest’ written anywhere. It wasn’t until he was right around the bonfire that he spotted the name and he......

........ stood. Right there. In front of the log.

Uh. It was what Prefect Abra was doing sooo...

Patrick had been dreading this class all week. He dreaded divination since his former head of house had left... unexpectedly as well. He followed the flames that lead down the pathway to the lake. He was very familiar with how to get to the lake by this point in his one at Hogwarts. Yet the pitch black that nigh brought gave him the heebejeebes more often than not.

Arriving at the lake he noticed Fletcher standing near the fire and log seats around it. Careful as to not sit in the wrong seat Patrick did a once around to find his name. He looked at the three two names tags but couldn’t read them without being obvious he was looking. He turned to face toward the fire and noticed Abra across the way, nodding to he lion prefect. He hoped this class went better than the running had been going.

Remembering his manners Patrick turned toward Fletcher, “good evening professor Fletcher” giving a curt nod Patrick scanned the rest of the students noting Jessa, but not recognizing the other student.

Bettie made her way down the path illuminated by lovely little blue flames toward the lake to the large bonfire. Reaching the bonfire Bettie found the Professor standing by it and a few other students standing by log seats with names on them.

Bettie was not sure if she should greet the professor verbally so she played it safe and greeted him with a smile and friendly nod. Then Bettie went around the bonfire looking for her log and long the way she greeted the other student them same with a smile and friendly nod.

When Bettie found her log she stood in front of it and just looking at the fire and listening to the water of the lake. Bettie is not to sure of all this divination stuff but, she does love a bonfire on a fine night by a body of water (at the beach).

Loveable Gryffinpuff| Stella Bella

Stella wasn't looking forward to this lesson at all, she was really starting to debate if she wanted to go or not. Sighing to herself she grabbed her Gryffindor robe and put it on before grabbing her books and stuff she possibly needed for class. Better safe then sorry right? Besides Professor Fletcher didn't seem any better then the Headmaster, and she didn't want to get on his bad side. Doubling checking everything she nodded to herself before heading out of the Gryffindor common room towards the lake. She wondered why they were having classes this late, but she kept that thought to herself.

After much walking she seen the blue bell flanes and followed them until she seen a roaring bonfire with log seats surrounding it. Seeing Professor Fletcher standing by the bonfire she nodded at him. "Good Evening Professor Fletcher sir, hope you're well. " she said politely before she went to find her seat. Looking at the logs she seen she the one she was sitting at and seen it was across from Abra and Lucas. Standing in front of her log seat she waited as she sent a small wave and smile at Lucas and Abra.

Natasha made her way out to the grounds a few minutes early, and was relieved to see the path created by the little blue flames. She did not know her way around the grounds at night and has been very concerned about becoming lost. When she came to the end of the path, she gave the professor a polite smile, remembering the rule to only speak when spoke to.

She walked over to the log seats, and the moment she saw they were assigned, she quickly found her place and stood there, patiently waiting with her book bag and wand. The strictness of his rules did intimidate her, but she hoped it would not be too obvious. Natasha was good at following the rules, but always worried about accidentally messing up. She tried to focus on the sounds of the bonfire and the lake to ease her nerves.

The bluebell flames were a nice touch, one Archer would not have expected from this particular professor. Also nice was the fact that she didn't have to drag herself up seven flights of stairs plus a ladder just to get to class. Not so nice, however, was the fact that this professor and his dictator buddy were not only eating up valuable sleeping time in the mornings with the S.O.R.E., but now also their evening free time with classes. So, it was with the absence of a smile that she followed the flickering blue flame trail to the lake.

Reaching the spot the divination professor had chosen, she was again surprised, this time by the sight of a large bonfire. "Good evening, Professor Fletcher. We having a little 'bonfire of the vanities?'" The last part was said with a small chuckle. And yes, she quickly found her own name and stood in front of the log in question. Which she found ridiculous, the assigned seating. They were teenagers, not delinquents. They could be trusted to find their own seats.

Natalie read the rules about six thousand times before even thinking about Divination class. The man was terrifying. He was scary. And he was BIG. He could probably crush a first year just by thinking about it. So, Natalie wanted to be sure that she was on her best behavior and to give the man NO reason to get her in trouble or question her... loyalty.

She followed the blue flames down to the lake. The whole scene was set up very ominously, to be honest. She was a little bit nervous on the inside, but she masked it with what she was hoping was cooool composure.

When she arrived, she stood in a place where Professor Fletcher could easily assign her a new spot. Because that was his rule: assigned seating. "Hello, Professor Fletcher," she said coolly, looking at the man very briefly with NO trace of a smile. Because he obviously didn't like those. And she remained standing.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

When Daisy made her way to the lake, she gave the Divination a quick polite nod of her head as she said, "Good evening, Professor Fletcher." She made her way to the log seat that had her name emblazoned on it and stood beside it. She wasn't going to sit down or speak a word unless Professor Fletcher gave her permission to.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Checking his watch as he walked over the Grounds to the class, Dorian gasped when he saw that if he did not move fast, he'd be late again picking up his pace and eventually it turning in to a jog, the fourth year managed to get to the Lake in time. But the BEST part was... He wasn't out of breath! Seemed like the morning running exercises were actually paying off. Huh...

"Hello Professor Fletcher" he greeted the man. Nornally he would have smiled cause that was the nice thing to do but this man had some weird rules.. He turned around instead and began searching for a place with his name on it.

Once he found it, the Ravenclaw sat down, saw the other students standing and shot back up as if the seat had burned his behind. Not that it had, he just remembered the no sitting before told rule. No one saw that right?!

As the days had passed, Stasya had found herself entertaining herself with the thoughts of who exactly was supposed to be the new Divination professor. Mainly because she’d remembered the empty seat at the feast, prior to the hostile takeover, and she knew enough by now that she doubted Headmistress Hawthorne hadn’t actually found someone to take over the lessons now that Professor Vance was apparently gone. On that topic, if she hadn’t known at least one of the professors who’d chosen not to return this term was by their own choice, she might’ve wondered if something else had been going on. It seemed awfully convenient that the new headmaster!sergeant had a flunkie who could teach the exact subject that had been allegedly empty, after all. However, for now, she was keeping her suspicions to herself, after being semi berated by a younger student for her distrust once already. Although she still didn’t trust Scrimgeour or his associate at all… So far, it hadn’t seemed like they were monitoring owls. Her letters to the former DADA professor had continued.

Either way, her little internal amusement over possible Divination professor replacements had continued as she’d made her way down toward the lake, her uniform and robes on and presentable as requested. A centaur would’ve been kind of amazing. Either way, it was an amusement completely to retain her insanity with SORE plus OWL studies plus Team Animagus work plus prefect duties, not reality. Sadly. The bluebell pathway markers were a nice touch, although she hardly needed them to find her way around the grounds after dark, and she’d arrived at the bonfire rather quickly.

“Good evening, Professor Fletcher,” she said politely, as she’d started her search for her assigned log seat. She hadn’t been stopped from greeting the professors and the headmaster at the first SORE meeting, so she guessed it was alright. As long as she didn’t say anything else, and she took up her position standing in front of the seat bearing her name silently. Sending quick smiles to Abra, Jessa, Lucas, Patrick, Stella, Natalie and Daisy but otherwise just watching everything around her. Flames, the barrier line around them, the logs and the unsettling presence of the professor. Constant vigilance.

Being a night owl, Max normally preferred evening lessons. Normally. That was before the introduction of S.O.R.E and being woken up at the crack of dawn every ruddy day. Now evening lessons were a bit of an inconvenience because they took up precious sleeping time.

Not only that, but he was also still slightly upset at the departure of Professor Vance. She was nice. And this new bloke wasn’t pretty to look at like she had been….

So, feeling irritable, the Slytherin found his designated log and stood there silently. No greetings from him.

The no speaking unless spoken to rule wasn’t an issue for him, he preferred quiet anyway so hah.

An evening lesson? Typically she looked forward to her Astronomy ones because it meant she didn't have to wake up as early. This term, however, things were quite different. She had been up since WAY-TOO-EARLY-FOR-HUMAN-LIFE O'CLOCK thanks to their stupid, mandatory S.O.R.E. exercises. And she was NOT happy to be here.

Plus, Zoryn hated this man. HATED.

He received no greeting and neither did her friends, but for different reasons. Immediately she went to find her log... Next to the slytherin prefect, apparently (Maxton), who also didn't receive much of a greeting. "Wake me up if I fall asleep," she mumbled quietly, because Merlin knew she wasn't about to fall asleep outside where there were BUGS.

Daehyun was... wary, to put it lightly, as he made his way down to the lake. Professor Fletcher looked as though it didn't take a lot to make him snap, and that was the last thing he wanted. Actually, seeing him snap would be entertaining, but he knew the detention and Merlin knew what else followed would be not. Therefore, he was going to keep his breathing and existing to a minimum.

The path the professor had set up for them was beautiful, though, he had to give him that. As he approached the bonfire, he frowned upon noticing the ring circling it. Was that... an age line? Whatever for?

... nope, not going to bother to over think it.

"Hello, professor," he said with a nod, before quickly turning towards the seats. He was about to move to a random log, but soon remembered that Fletcher liked them to sit wherever he pleased, so he found his designated seat and stood right by it. That's right, they needed permission to sit. Not like he was exhausted from all the morning running and the extra trips up to the highest tower and back.

Sigh.

It was quite interesting to have a divination lesson in the evening, and from her experience outside by the lake and with the new professor it was hard to say how things would go.

Though as she made her way down to the lake she slowly realized that the lesson she was hoping for was going to happen. Apparently since from the walk down to the lake she could see a bonfire. The one lesson where she would have been happily taken food. Bonfire = Smores.

But she wasn’t counting on it with this new professor.

Juni made her way down to the bonfire, first greeting the professor. ”Good Evening Professor Fletcher.” Then she headed to her assigned seat… or log as it was for this lesson. Standing next to it as she waited for the others to come and the professor to start the lesson and let them sit down.

Hanna had vacillated on her decision to continue with Divination upon hearing this man was taking the class. He was a beast, she knew it, after his arrival at Hogwarts during the opening feast. Him and that so-called Headmaster. Alas, it was so and Hanna, whose brain was so desperate to learn all the things, had finally decided to keep the subject.

She followed the bluebell flames to where the class had been set up. Some of her classmates were there already, as well as the Professor. Doing a double check of herself to ensure her uniform was neat and in place, and her hair tidy, she walked towards the group. "Good evening Professor Fletcher," she greeted the man!beast in as polite a tone as she could manage. She was about to sit down on a section of log before realising that they had names on them, and the section of log did not have her name on it. On she went to locate it, and there she sat.

So yeah, this was actually kind of cool. Being out on the grounds at night... the bluebell flames illuminating the path to the Lake... ACES THIS WAS! It almost made her wish she liked Divination in the slightest. Heh. As it were, she had no desire to learn The Divine Arts. What a load of waffle it all was, really. Be that as it may, the young Hufflepuff had found her way to the seating area and glanced around. The ONLY reason she was here was to check out the mysterious new Professor. Curiosity at its finest.

And having read the man's rules, she simply stood near one of the seats, but dared not to sit her bum on one. Also, she didn't greet the man since his rules stated not to speak unless spoken to. That applied here, no? It was all very confusing really.

1 of 4 Amigos Don't underestimate me!

Divination- A complete waste of time and honestly, in Callum's opinion, was the least reliable magical practice.. To divine is to dream in a waking sleep that would surely lead one off a cliff..

But still, the second year badger would heed his class schedule and go to class when that time came.. It just so happened to be time for this lesson and down to the lake he made his way. " Good evening, Professor Fletcher. Brilliant idea to light the way.", he said with a nod as he greeted their teacher. Just because he didn't believe in the inner eye didn't mean he'd be rude to one who did..

After saying hi to the professor he made his way over to where the logs had been set up and noticed that their seats seemed to be assigned. This meant he had NO choice in who he'd be stuck sitting next to... Joy
It didn't take him long to find his name and replaced his name card with his bum and started to ready himself for the start of class. Once he was done with that he looked around to see who else managed to get there as early as he had. Eh.. There was a fair few, but no sign of Beth or Rylee yet.. Hmm?

D I V I N A T I O N!

It was still honestly one of Derf's favorite subjects and it always allowed and enabled his creativity and tendency to conspire against himself and the world. Usually he was every shade of chipper heading to class, but tonight...not so much.

Night time. Near the lake. Talk about rubbing salt into the reopened wounds. Though the sixth year was keeping such thoughts, mostly, to himself. Once again remembering the ink in his skin and what it represented to him. So...maybe tonight could be a bit therapeutic too? Judging by the look of all that fire as he drew closer to the designated location...maybe? Cleansing fire? He felt it safe to assume that they would be practicing pyromancy - or some form of it - though he did not utter such musing as he had with Professor Vance.

Say, would this man enjoy a Magic 8-Ball too?

....maybe he should ask his for that answer. Also...where to find his seat.

Peering around and simply offering the professor a nod as he walked by, he eventually found the log with his name on it beside Penny's. He offered her a small wave as he moved to sit, though he stopped himself as his knees bent and he REMEMBERED. Right, standing up straight and will just...keep his bag slung over his shoulder for now too.

Phew.

Charlie made it a point not to be late, despite the slightly confusing classroom rules this man had. As adviced by his peers, he'd read Fletcher's rules more than the usual and decided to just 'grin and bear it'. Besides, he needed a good OWL score this term no matter what the subject. He was beyond the point of considering which subject to pursue or not-- he just wanted to remain in school so he could officially play Quidditch, and eventually in the U17s.

The bluebell flame touch was kinda nice...only it felt like he was being deceived because...just look at the man near the big bad bonfire. It was like he was lead straight to his doom, you know? He didn't know if he had 'the eye' for the class but then again, he'd decided to be the good student this time around. And because he thought saying 'hello' fell under senseless chatter simply because he wasn't spoken to first, he quickly averted his eyes away from the man and began to search for his seat. Conveniently, he was stationed farthest from the man...for now.

He stood with the rest of his classmates and waited for the rest to arrive. He stared at the bonfire in front of them with his arms crossed and thought about Quidditch tactics. Time well spent, yeah?

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

It was bad enough that they had to get up stupid early for S.O.R.E., let alone have lessons AFTER lesson time. Astronomy was, of course, an exception - you couldn't see the stars during the day - but Divination? Seriously? With the other seemingly-angry dude who'd come in with the new Head?

Józef was not down for this.

Which is why he was happy to go by the rule of 'not speaking unless spoken to' and didn't even greet the Professor, instead finding his log and eyeing the fire slightly suspiciously. As tired as his legs were, he didn't dare sit just yet.

Uh... they weren't in the classroom or anything, but did Fletcher's rule still apply, about remaining standing until told otherwise? Or would they be expected to sit straight away, given this was different to a classroom setting? Would he be berated for questioning what they were supposed to do, in case even considering that the usual rule might not apply got him into trouble? The uncertainty sparked off all kinds of overthinking and anxiety, but ultimately Abra preferred to err on the side of caution, and so stayed standing in front of his log seat, casting an unsure look at the professor.

Calvin glanced briefly down at his watch. The students still had some time before he had to grow militant so he chose to instead enjoy the serenity of the lake and the crackling log fire. It was tempting to have more of his classes out here by the lake in the late evening but in all honesty the man enjoyed his evenings as much as the students did and not necessarily when they were around him.

The first to arrive was Mr. Botros. The man watched him carefully, wondering how well he remembered the rules but nodded a return greeting. "Good evening Mr. Botros." Good. He remembered.

Was it him or did the kid seem a little nervous?

She’d been about to say hello but then remembered that whole.....no talking thing and was sure greeting friends fell under that. As was.....standing....? Even out here? Well if Abra was gonna keep standing, she wasn’t gonna take the chance of sitting. When in Rome, yeah?

Jessa walked the circle until she found a log with her name on it and just.....stood there...

Ah, the entitled Head Girl. Good to see she'd chosen to dress appropriately this go of things. Much like the Gryffindor Prefect, he watched her carefully as she approached too. If no one else, he expected the student leaders to uphold the rules set forth. "Good evening, Ms. Cambridge." He returned, pleased she'd also remembered to remain standing with her lips shut.

There was hope for these students yet.

And then there was this one.

Calvin watched the first year silently, wondering if he was daft, or simply poor at reading. It figured it would be a Gryffindor. "Next time you walk by my noticeboard, Mr. Dakest. I suggest you take another read at my rules." No unnecessary chatter meant no unnecessary chatter. Frivolous greetings that served no purpose fell under that. "Until such a time, drop and give me 25 push ups. Take too long and I'll want 25 more so you best get started."

He would decide how long was too long.

Remembering his manners Patrick turned toward Fletcher, “good evening professor Fletcher” giving a curt nod Patrick scanned the rest of the students noting Jessa, but not recognizing the other student.

Calvin's attention turned from Mr. Dakest and the push ups he expected him to be doing at the arrival of another student; another student leader. He expected the same standard as the first two to have arrived. Seeing him silently come and take up position before his seat made the man pleased. The man nodded his approval. At least this one knew how to read.

"Good evening, Mr. Dooley."

The smile this one offered was not returned. His approval was not meant to last.

Like he had with the young Gryffindor, Calvin silently watched her a moment, wondering if she would amend her ways but when she didn't, he spoke up. "Ms. Blackwell, I'd like you to go walking until you've hit the 30th bluebell flame by counting, then turn and head back to this spot. I trust when you get back, you won't forget your greeting as you've just done. It's a far walk and you'll suffer worse if you take too long to return." Again, he would decide how long was too long. "Go."

Calvin took a breath, still quite calm despite the two students who'd already forgotten themselves. Yes, rather calm in deed.

"Good evening, Ms. Starson." He returned with a small nod of his own. "Quite well, thank you." His tone was brief but not harsh. He glanced down at his watch. It wouldn't be too much longer before he could begin the lesson.

She tried to focus on the sounds of the bonfire and the lake to ease her nerves.

...

Sweet Circe on high, another one. Again he took a pause, giving her a chance to make amends. He did believe in mistakes. What he didn't believe in was whatever trend was slowly growing here. "Ms. Destler, I'd like you to accompany Ms. Blackwell to the 30th bluebell flame and back. Like her, I trust you will also remember your greeting when you return and not take too long in doing it." It was easy to get it done quickly if they took it at something of a jog. Walking would definitely make it too long.

It did not occur to him that these two had withheld their greeting because of the rule on speaking for the simple fact he thought it clear this did not apply to the standard greeting one offered a Professor when getting to class. Surely they had the common sense to figure that out.

"Good evening, Ms. Calrissian." Calvin replied, actively contemplating whether her little question and subsequent chuckle had indeed been a jab at the noble art. Teenagers were not known for their sense of sensible humour. It was their sass that made them famous.

In the end, he chose to believe she knew better. Her latter comment, he would simply ignore.

"Good evening, Ms. McKinley." He replied to the next student to arrive at the bonfire. Did it bother him that she offered no smile? Not in the slightest. All that mattered to him was that she followed his rules, and she had. The man nodded his approval as she too went and took a standing position before her seat.

For the most part, these students were doing what they were meant to, and that's all he really wanted--save the three he'd already had to take care of.

This one got a raise of his brow the moment his butt connected with that log. He'd been prepared to handle it as he'd handled the other three students but Mr. Katharos caught on to his mistake quickly. Good for him. Very good. Rather than create an entire ordeal out of it, the man simply nodded and returned the greeting. "Good evening, Mr. Katharos. Quick on your feet, I see."

Was he ready to change his mind on the student leadership? Not entirely, but when all the ones that did turn up, did so and followed his rules to a T, it set the right sort of example, the kind only three students hadn't been able to follow. On a larger scale, that wasn't so terrible.

"Good evening, Ms. Dalgaard-Volkova." He replied, his tone not as hard as it typically had a tendency to be.

Speaking of examples, this one was about to become one. The Slytherin Prefect has managed to break the streak the student leaders had created. He supposed it had been too good to be true.

"Mr. Carden," He addressed him, thinking the 30 bluebells he'd given the younger girls not nearly enough for a student leader who should've known better. The standard polite greeting was not to be excluded. "I'd like you to count back to the 60th bluebell flame you come across then walk back. When you return, like the first years you're now being grouped with, I'd like to think you'll remember your greeting. It's a much further distance than they have to go but I want you back in no more than two minutes after their return." Better start running.

He'd have had him walk back to the castle then start again from there but the lesson would be starting soon and he didn't want the boy to have the excuse of not being present to participate.

Mr. Carden was followed by yet another. Was it time to begin rethinking his night? Was this the beginning of its own trend?

He thought the girl would remedy the situation, as that one Ravenclaw had done at the last minute but the steady gaze he set on her revealed nothing more than muttered words he hadn't been close enough to hear. Words not meant for him then. Pity.

"Miss Spinnet, you may also take a walk back counting 30 bluebell flames before returning here. I trust you'll remember your greeting when you do. Don't dawdle, I'll be expecting 25 push ups when you return." No talking was no talking--and not to be confused with the standard greeting that was typically expected. "Should take about 5 minutes. You have 3." Possible if she didn't simply walk.

Two offenses in less than a minute of arriving. A new record so far. Ambitious.

Sigh.

This one he also watched closely for the first few moments, having seen him looking over seats that did not belong to him. Would he be the...what was it now, 6th(?) student to receive some form of "correction" from him this evening? Apparently not. Smart boy went ahead and found the seat that actually belonged to him. Very smart boy.

Juni made her way down to the bonfire, first greeting the professor. ”Good Evening Professor Fletcher.” Then she headed to her assigned seat… or log as it was for this lesson. Standing next to it as she waited for the others to come and the professor to start the lesson and let them sit down.

"Good evening, Ms. Primeaux." He returned, noting the fall back into expected behaviour by the student leaders. Oh Merlin.

Calvin stared long and hard at this next one, noting her reflexes here not as sharp as Mr. Katharos' had been. Either that, or she genuinely thought this was okay. Pity. Even if she didn't read his rules, you think she'd read the metaphoric room and realize she was the only one sitting.

"Good evening, Ms. Newton." He said briefly. "I expect 25 push ups from you Ms. Newton. When you're done, you will remain standing for the remainder of the lesson. Rules are meant to be followed." Why she thought she was the exception when everyone else was standing was beyond him.

But there was another one. It was a near perfect divide now, between those who did know and did what was expected and those who didn't. Calvin scowled at the Hufflepuff as she arrived, pleased she hadn't taken a seat like the foolish Ravenclaw before her but the lack of greeting did not go unnoticed.

Why so many chose to leave off the standard, expected greeting was beyond him but, "Ms. Goodman. You will join several of your classmates in counting back to the 30th blue bell flame then walking back. Don't forget the greeting when you return. Don't take the entire night to get there and back.

Hmm?

"Good evening, Mr. Prichard. Good of you to have followed it here." He replied, once again refocusing his mind after dealing with the latest student. It was reassuring to know the gesture of lighting was appreciated but again, it was more for his peace of mind than them. He wouldn't have taken kindly to anyone showing up half an hour late with the excuse they'd gotten lost.

That wouldn't fly with him.

Nor would him sitting. "25 push ups. You'll also remain standing as Ms. Newton will." No sitting meant no sitting. How unobservant. Everyone else was standing and he chose to sit.

Phew.

Calvin's brows steadily rose as the Hufflepuff Prefect sank toward the log. It was strange he'd even been holding his breath. Thankfully, the boy--unlike the unwise Ravenclaw just now and the young Hufflepuff--did catch himself at the last minute and took on a standing position instead.

Relief quickly went south however at the boy's persistent silence. It began to register to the man that some students couldn't tell the difference between senseless chatter and a standard greeting that was expected upon arriving at a class. The man rubbed his face, growing tired of this by now. How many had he already sent walking?

"Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne, you will join Mr. Carden counting back to the 60th blue bell flame you come across before returning here. I also expect you back in no more than two minutes from the time those who will be counting 30 before return. I trust you'll also remember your greeting when you get back. Hop to it." Doable, if he took it at a jog while those doing 30 kept it at a walk.

His fate was tied to theirs.

SPOILER!!: Mr. Kane

And just like that, this was turning into a more physical evening than he'd been expecting. The earlier trend was being dismantled by this new one.

"Mr. Kane. By now I assume you're familiar with the drill. Count 30 blue bell flames from this spot then hurry back. Take too long and you'll find out what happens." A part of him wondered if the latter few were remaining silent because they WANTED an excuse to slip away but it was no reprieve. He was timing them and would himself decide if they took too long. "Hurry up." He continued. "When you get back, I suggest you remember your greeting." Standard greeting was not senseless chatter. It was expected.

Józef was not down for this.

Which is why he was happy to go by the rule of 'not speaking unless spoken to' and didn't even greet the Professor, instead finding his log and eyeing the fire slightly suspiciously. As tired as his legs were, he didn't dare sit just yet.

"And you may join him." He said, now turning his gaze to the Gryffindor to approach. "Count 30 blue bell flames and back. Keep a brisk pace, I won't be interrupted by your returning after I've already begun the lesson. You'll do well to remember your greeting when you return."

What was with these students?

Calvin waited another few minutes as the last of the students came by but a glance at his watch told him it was time to get things rolling. He trusted everyone he'd given those specific tasks to had already completed or would be completing them in the next few seconds so he paused a beat before beginning.

"It's nice to see that most of you know how to do what is expected of you. To those who clearly don't, I don't expect a repeat of tonight. Next time, it won't be a few push ups and a brisk walk. Let me make this clear, the standard greeting, is expected. For the benefit of those who can't tell the difference, let me clarify. When you get to class, you greet the Professor. This is normal. This is not neuroscience. Senseless chatter" He continued with emphasis. "hi, hello friend I literally saw two seconds ago before class started, how was dinner, did you see the staircases move like they do a million times a day, I got new shoes, my hair got longer, things that don't pertain to the lesson directly--which takes me to the second part of that, speaking when spoken to. It has nothing to do with the polite greeting." You could only slap them on the wrist so many times before you had to reach for the big stuff. As it so happened, the second time offending was to be his limit. The second time, he would not be so lenient. For now, he had a lesson to get on with.

"I'd like to think it's obvious by the large fire, what we will be discussing this evening. If it's not, I suggest you keep that to yourself and pay attention long enough to find out." He did believe in stupid questions and didn't take kindly to them.

Pyromancy," He began for anyone who truly was clueless--more for himself than for them as he didn't want to have to deal with that--"to put it simply, is the act of divining the future through the flames." He wouldn't waste time asking them what it was, it was in their textbooks, they would already know. If they didn't read and thus didn't know then he was not prepared to suffer their ridiculous guesses. No thank you. "It's an ancient practice, leaving many historical footprints. Can anyone tell me of an instance, fictional or otherwise in which fire was used as a means of divination?" Pause. "If you can't think of anything, don't make something up. I'll know." Or maybe he wouldn't, but were they willing to take that chance? He was quite versed on the subject. "Instead, you may give me a reason you think this particular practice can or can't be accurate in divining the future."

Just like stupid questions, he did believe in stupid answers.

OOC: Hello everyone, thanks for coming!! The lesson has officially began but you can still jump in. Just say you're charrie was there the whole time, or you could always make them late, see how well they fare. There are two questions to choose from. Either give an example fictional, or factual in which pyromancy was used, or have your charrie say why they do/don't believe this can be an accurate way of telling the future. I'll be moving the class again in another 36ish hrs.

Great Scott this man was an irritation. Of course she saw her classmates standing. Of course she knew she had to stand, but she didn't really want to. Although she figured he didn't give a fwooper about whether any of them were being difficult for him. He gave the aura of someone who enjoyed exerting his control over children. Pity. Hanna pictured how unhappy he must be in his life to need to dominate a group of under-aged students.

She smiled at him and jumped to her feet. Yes, JUMPED to her feet. "YES Sir," she said, resisting the urge to salute him. She jumped forward and did 25 perfect push-ups on her toes without showing signs of tiring. It was, after all, an exercise she had done at least weekly for the past 7 years. She and Mister Prichard it appeared would be standing for the rest of class, which was less good... but still. She just pictured him going back to his office once class was done, crying because of how lonely he was.

She frowned at him as he spoke. Did he actually think of the words he was saying? He was the RUDEST man she had ever had the displeasure of meeting. And she was SO close to grabbing her things and leaving his stupid class. He was a bully. A big stinking bully. And of course, what could they do? Nothing. Because their new even-more-of-a-bully Headmaster was just the same.

And then the questions. Hanna didn't like fire. She was glad she was standing where she was. It was nice for its warmth and all, but she had sugh a great fear of being on fire, which of course was why she wasn't glad to hear about their topic. Not sure whether to raise her hand or not, in case he bit her head off, she raised it. "Professor," she enunciated. In case he didn't catch that she had spoken to him by his title. Not that he deserved it."Pyromancy is where you observe the flame for shapes." And... things. "But it's dangerous because you could get so caught up in seeing things that you fall forward into it, catch fire and burn alive without having time to cast a flame freezing charm on yourself." Yes the thought absolutely TERRIFIED her.
