Default DADA Lesson

The transition from October to November has definitely been extreme. Just that morning a glistening layer of frost had was seen on the ground and remained while you completed your S.O.R.E. before breakfast, and it has been forecasted that mountains of snow might be making an appearance in the near future. Brace yourselves. Winter is coming, and it looks like it is going to be a very long and cold one this year.

As you make your way out to the Clock Tower Entrance for an oddly scheduled Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson after a long day of classes and post-supper, the chill in the air is almost unbearable and your breath can be seen still in visible puffs as the remainder of the sunset lingers in the horizon. Matching the weather perfectly — almost too perfectly — stands Headmaster Scrimgeour at the threshold of the entrance, his back to the courtyard and wooden bridge beyond. His arms are crossed and his face looks sterner than ever as little flecks of white being trickling down from the sky.

Being that you are not in the classroom setting, there are no desks for your to sit at. There is not even the slightest indication about what the topic of today's lesson will be about. With those icy blue eyes watching you like a hawk, you had better stand firmly in position and wait for further instruction.

OOC: Welcome to the first role-played Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson of the term. Please note that your student character would be familiar with Scrimgeour's no-nonsense style of teaching, his more practical methods, and his classroom rules by now as they have been having lessons with him for a couple months now. Though the lesson has stated, feel free to jump in at any time!

She was freezing and tired from the days lessons, but one wouldn't know it from Vita's demeanor. She stood still as a statue, not a hair out of place or a wrinkle in sight as she waited for class to begin. In fact, the only movement from her was one done in greeting, her head bowing in respect to the man in front of the growing crowd of students. She wasn't meant to speak unless spoken to, yes?

Truth be told, the fifth year never liked defense against the dark arts. The gloom and doom didn't suit her or her interests, but her need to stay on the headmaster's good side far outweighed her dislike and so she studied up on the subject in her free time so she'd be prepared for meetings like this.

Now to wait and see what they were going to face this evening. Vita couldn't begin to guess what Scrimgeour had in store for them.

All the morning exercises were definitely starting to improve his lack of fitness… He’d even managed to complete five laps without wanting to keel over and pass out that very morning. Still, Max was a little out of breath when he joined his classmates at the clock tower entrance.

He’d had spent so long making sure that his uniform looked immaculate that he was worried he might be late. Lucky for him, he wasn’t. Being out of breath was better than being late, right?

Not to mention, all the rushing had warmed him up somewhat too so that was a bonus.

“Hey — I mean… Good evening, Sir.”
He didn’t want to start the lesson on the wrong foot, or Merlin forbid be forced into more exercise, so he made sure to greet the Headmaster with all the respect he could muster.

When he arrived he did not immediately see anyone he knew, so he stood a bit off to the side, and away from the thick of things. He was a bit thankful for the no-nonsense demeanor of their professor, which saved him from having to worry about any sort of potential mingling. As long as he could stand peacefully by himself without the attention of anyone else, that was perfectly fine with him.
The lesson Lucas had been dreading most. Headmaster Scrimgeour...Defense...he missed Hirsch so much right now, as he entered the...area. It was evening, and Lucas' stomach was growling because he wasn't used to...being in class at this time. Please be quiet.. he begged his body. He made damn sure his uniform was perfect, down to the knot in his tie. His red hair was swept to the side, combed neatly. "Good evening, Headmaster Sc-Scrim-geor--" He stumbled over the man's name and mispronounced it horribly, putting emphasis on the wrong syllables and whatnot.

Merlin help him.

He stood quietly next to Indigo, feeling more at ease with the Ravenclaw there. He spotted a few other familiar faces, too. Okay.

BREATHE.

The temptation to skip this lesson was very much prevalent in Józef's mind as he ate dinner, but ultimately he decided against it - no matter how much he didn't like the Headmaster, or lessons that took place after dinner, he wasn't prepared to risk another punishment just yet.

He had a feeling that next time it would be slightly more severe.

So after checking his uniform and all of his books, he headed to the Clock Tower, offering a stiff nod in the direction of the dictator. "Good evening, Headmaster Scrimgeour."

Holy hippogriff it was freezing!

To make matters worse the S.O.R.E exercise made her sick this morning, but here she was attending classes and being on time. Now that she thought about it boils didn't sound half bad, wasn't there a potion to cure that as well? Eh... at this point she was tired of running and she hated being cold! She was beginning to think the Headmaster liked touring them, come to think about it she was sure he did.

Gathering her books and everything she needed she ran out towards the clock tower out of breath her hair messy and her robe hanging off her. As she looked down at herself she sighed. " I can't go looking like this!" she thought to herself. Fixing her hair and her robes and clothes she walked towards Headmaster. "Good evening, Headmaster Scrimgeour Sir." she said politely before taking a stand beside her lion buddy Lucas.

She seen familiar faces but she didn't dare wave or smile at them. Standing tall and firm she tried to ignore the cold breeze that was trying to make her shiver. "Don't shiver.... don't shiver!" she thought to herself.

Was in December yet? Sadly not, it was over a month before they would be free of this place for Christmas holiday. She didn’t know about the others but she was ready. Ninety nine percent of the time Juni did not want to go home for Christmas break, but this year she one hundred percent was ready to go home.

As she headed into the Clock Tower Entrance where the lesson was being held. The location and time were a little off compared their normal times and location. She had bad feeling about this There wasn’t one clue around to make a guess about what the lesson was going to be about.. Lessons in other places other than an actual classroom often led to bad things happening. But the sixth year was going to stay positive all long as she could. She still hadn’t decided if a verbal greeting was a good idea or not for the defense professor. Today however she was risking it.

”Good evening, Headmaster.” As she passed through to the clock tower entrance. Not that there was a seat to stand by. So she walked out a bit turned to face the front or the front facing the headmaster. She stood still arms by her side. Yep this place had turned into a military school.

Skyler stood there and rubbed her bands together to keep herself warm. She knew it was in the headmaster's mind "not standing firmly", but she also thinks that he would rather want a warm and alert student rather then a popsicle complaining about the cold before class begun.

She would normally speak her greeting to her Professors but she really was unsure if she could due to the 'speak only when spoken to" rule. In Daisy's mind, the Headmaster had a somewhat erinaceous attitude so she was of a nervous disposition these days.
Those piercing eyes first fell upon the Hufflepuff Prefect, the one that wasn't entitled and knew her place. Though the man did not move a muscle, Swann's quick nod and silence was noted. Scrimgeour grunted back at her in acknowledgement, a small puff of air leaving his nostrils.

Still, Chloe was willing to give the Headmaster the benefit of the doubt as she took up a silent position near the Headmaster. No greeting, since they were meant to wait to speak until spoken to. Although the chattering of her teeth meant that silence wasn't really possible at the moment. She DID wave her fingers at him and mouth a very cheery HELLLLOOOOO, but at least she was quiet.
Kettleburn was the next to come into his hawk-like gaze. The man watched the Ravenclaw very carefully, half expecting her to have some snide remark to make about his position at the school and wrongfully assume their former headmistress would return. But she was silent, which pleased the headmaster.

His eyes, though, did narrow when she mouthed out 'hello' to him. So she had found a loophole, hmm? "Unnecessary, Kettleburn. Drop and give me twenty."

The small Ravenclaw followed. His narrow eyes from before returned to normal as he watched Destler take her spot in silence. He was tempted to say something about the shivering, however. But the man remained stoic as ever. The girl would have no choice but to get used to the chill in the air, just like the rest of them.

She was sure that SOME students were going to either skip class or act brashly IN class just to get in trouble and defy authority, but she was in class to LEARN and earn points and be a GOOD student.

Also, she was scared of detention, so... there was that.

It was cold and the sun was going down and this was the time that Natalie liked to read by the fire and let her food digest and maybe take a nap, but today it was class time. Outside. Where it was cold. And snowing. On top of her clean, crisp uniform, Natalie wore her cloak, a house scarf and gloves, and a hat on her head. She got cold easily.

She walked down to where class was being held, simply nodded politely at the Headmaster and took her spot, or where she thought her spot might be and stood there, hands tucked into her pockets, waiting for the class to begin.
When the sixth year Slytherin arrived, Scrimgeour was quick in observing the girl's attire. He could tell that she was wearing her uniform, but she had also arrived in a cloak, scarf, gloves, and a hat. Mentally he was torn between thinking that McKinley was weak for not being able to handle the biting cold or appreciative of the girl's proactive thinking. The old man decided to not say anything to her and allowed his eyes to look elsewhere.

Alas, it was Headmaster Scrimgeour. Sir PricklyPants as she so deemed to refer to him in her thoughts…and well, in her stubborn bravery moment of the day she had brought something with her.

Maybe it would make Headmaster Scrimgeour think she was a decent person and not the little rebel she truly was under everything. Her uniform was pristine of course and the small Tupperware box in her hand sort of shook as she nervously walked into the room and RIGHT up to Professor Headmaster Scrimgeour’s desk.

”hello Professor,” the blonde smiled as she extended her hand and the Tupperware toward him. ”I wasn’t um…able to get this until this morning and saved you a slice…its birthday cake sent from my Dutch Oma…its Licorice flavored” she smiled as she gingerly placed the container on his desk and skulked back to hers where she tucked her books before standing there like a statue. Really Dizzy and Runa would have been proud, she’d made it. Dutch Drop cake. It probably tasted like a burning salt lick of death…but obviously, she was in a sharing mood. It was Scrimgeour after all – he deserved a mouth full of brimstone.
Greyvson's appearance earned his approval from the start ... until he noticed that with her was a clear container in her hands. There were only two places the man believed food should be: in the Great Hall during scheduled meals and the kitchen below where the meals were made. Plus he would never accept food from a student.

The man's eyes narrowed as the girl approached him, having the audacity to speak before she was spoken to or even permitted to speak. No words came out of his mouth. He simply let her speak and hand over the cake, digging herself into a hole. Where she was placing the container, he did not know. They were not in the traditional classroom setting, so there was no desk. The container fell to the floor of the tower, which was rather ironic given the cake's name.

"You are to speak when you are spoken to, Greyvson," the man scolded, taking out his wand. He pointed it at the cake and, just before Vanishing it, added, "Food also has no place here. Twenty points will be taken from Slytherin, and you have thirty push-ups to do and en extra lap to run in the morning."

The first year Slytherin seemed to decide to follow the steps of her older housemate, though thankfully no more food was brought to class. The man looked down at Blackwell, rather disappointed that she was asking this question when his rules were very clear and they had been attending his classes for two months now.

"Correct, Blackwell. Five points will be taken from Slytherin for not remembering and following that simple rule. Drop and give me twenty now, or run an additional lap in the morning."

But, here she was anyway, uniform all nice and tidy as stated in the rules, all supplies tucked in her backpack, shoes recently shined, hair pulled back in a neat bun, face absent of all make-up and tie perfectly straight. Honestly, the whole get-up was reminiscent of a muggle ROTC uniform, except her tie was yellow and black striped instead of navy blue (she'd switched her skirt for pants, thanks to the cold). The only other exception to that was the trench coat, gloves and scarf she was wearing. From the front, it might look like she was falling into line with the new regime. But, if one took even a quick glance at the back of her coat, one would see the giant phoenix emblazoned there in what seemed to be bluebell flames (they weren't, just looked like them, thanks to a charm she had learned at Illvermorny).

" Sir, Headmaster, sir," she greeted with a proper military salute. Otherwise, she was silent, standing with her back straight, arms crossed behind her back and staring straight forward. Was she trying to make a point? Yes, she was.
The fifth year Hufflepuff's appearance was approved at a quick glance. Scrimgeour was again torn between the additional attire, but said nothing of it. He also didn't see the back of the coat ... yet. The man had nothing to say to Cairissian, until she decided to give him a military salute, which he didn't mind at all, and opened her mouth.

What was so difficult about being seen and not heard?

"Speak only when you are spoken to," he firmly stated. "Five points will be taken from Hufflepuff. You also have the choice of doing twenty push-ups now or running an extra lap tomorrow."

So, she stood, waiting for the lesson to start. Feeling colder as the time went on. And colder. So cold, she was sure her lips were blue.
Newton received a lingering glance. Scrimgeour was analyzing her stature, which was coming off in an uncomfortable manner. But, like some of the other students before her, no words were said. With a blink, his eyes shifted to a different student.

Acting like she wasn’t letting the stress get to her was getting harder, but she wasn’t going to let anyone break her. It was her secret promise to Professor Hirsch, especially now that her near-daily letters to him had been forcibly stopped due to the owl monitoring rule. After an earlier discussion with Koen, however, she’d just resorted to writing her thoughts down on a charmed parchment to be used during the holiday break to contact the former professor, aka her (pretend) Uncle Roderik. DADA lessons weren’t the same without him presiding over them, but she’d survive. Preferably, she’d survive without having to sacrifice herself, because that promise still stood too.

Either way, she’d made the decision to utilize a few well-cast heating charms on her clothing as she’d gotten ready for the after-supper lesson, making sure every inch of her uniform was spotless. Which had been harder when it had been easier to spend time in the barns between lessons, but disappointingly was a lot simpler when she felt basically trapped inside the castle aside from when she could get Professor Wayland to chaperone her.

Therefore, she was at least a fraction more comfortable as she’d walked out to the clocktower entrance, if not quite as warm as she’d have been if she could wear anything other than her uniform. She was comfortable enough that the polite smile she’d reserved for the headmaster and his minions came easily to her face as she stopped near where Chloe was standing. “Good evening Headmaster,” she said simply and oh-so-politely, even as she secretly wished she could surreptitiously cast a heating charm in the direction of her Ravenclaw friend, or to hug her and hope her own heating charms transferred somehow.

She didn’t risk it, though. Part of her honestly was a bit nervous about even moving at all until it was requested. Gryffindor was still surprisingly doing okay in the house point department, and she didn’t think it was worth hurting their position, no matter how much she’d wanted to. And she really wanted to. A hug would be nice right about now.
The female Gryffindor Prefect got a look over from the man. Her uniform was in good condition and she appeared warm. But the smile was something else. As expected, the man didn't give her one in return. He did, however, have something to say to her. The greeting was unnecessary. He did not need to be wished a good evening.

"You are to remain silent unless you are spoken to or asked to speak, Dalgaard-Volkova. I will be taking five points from Gryffindor for your lack of remembering that expectation of mine. Twenty push-ups are to be done this instant, unless you would rather have an additional lap to run in the morning."

It was starting to get harder and harder to get out of his bed and the cold made him feel even worse. No one wanted to exercise in the cold, did they?

You know, maybe risking the boils wasn’t such a bad idea.

With all of this in mind, Lucas made his way to their lesson, which was taking place……. near the Clock Tower? Uh…... Yeah, he was confused. What any of this had to do with Defence Against the Dark Arts, he didn’t know. The only thing he could think of was defending himself against CLOCKS but that sounded so dumb that even he smiled to himself.

He was funny. Secretly. To himself.

But that smile soon disappeared when he saw the Headmaster. The man was already taking the fun away from this place, he might even make it illegal to be happy, soon enough. "Hello, Headmaster sir," he said quietly, approaching an empty spot to stand in.
Scrimgeour felt the same about the first year Gryffindor who decided that greeting him was a necessity. It wasn’t at all. "You can join your Prefect, Dakest. Drop and give me twenty, or run an extra lap tomorrow. The choice is yours. Five points will be taken from Gryffindor."

He wanted silence and attentiveness.

Rubbing her hands together to heat them up, Sylvie shivered as she looked around at the people present. No greeting or anything for Scrimmy, since the no speaking unless spoken to thing was still a thing and she didn't much fancy a detention. Sweeping strained eyes over the little crowd, she spotted Natalie from her year and made a beeline for her.

So far so good, no Zoryn in sight she'd just wait for the rest of her friends to show up.
Fortunately the next Gryffindor gave him that. The old man had no words to say, though he did notice the hand rubbing. Scrimgeour couldn't help but think about the lack of endurance some of them had. The real world was going to be a cruel, cruel place if they couldn’t power through a little cold bite from Mother Nature. There were worse things out there.

They would learn that soon enough.

If there was anything that was likely to put Abra in a foul mood it was cold, and it was snow. In addition to that, now he had to attend a lesson with the Headmaster, which always multiplied his anxiety about a millionfold. Bad mood and wrecked nerves combined meant that this lesson was sure to be far from a pleasant experience.

Holding his robes tightly around him - they were equipped with warming charms, but Abra didn't dare add a jacket, scarf, or even gloves - Abra arrived at the clock tower, his teeth chattering and his face stinging in the cold as he claimed a space among the rest of the gathered students.

"Good evening, Headmaster Scrimgeour," he greeted the man himself. Abra's voice was wary but polite, and shook ever so slightly - though whether from the teeth-chattering or from anxiety, it was hard to tell.
The sight of the male Gryffindor Prefect, honestly, disappointed Scrimgeour. The holding of the robes and the chattering teeth was a sign of weakness. Was the boy cold? He was in luck because the option of push-ups was in the forecast for the overly polite, yet anxious, sixth year.

"Twenty push-ups or run an extra lap in the morning, Botros. You should know by now that you are to stay silent until permitted to speak in this class," the man responded. "Gryffindor will be losing another five points as well."

The second reason being she liked the subject. It was that simple.

Whether or not she would get herself into trouble if she didn't attend the lesson never really occurred to her. Whatever the reason, Rylee was here, at the clock tower entrance out in the cold. "Good evening, Headmaster," the third year greeted lightly standing as still as possible in her spot. Which if anyone that knew her, knew this wasn't an easy task. She clasped her hands together in front of herself to keep from fidgeting about.
"And another five points from Gryffindor," the headmaster quickly added upon the female Prichard's arrival. "I did not give you permission to speak. Do twenty push-ups, or add an additional lap to your required S.O.R.E. tomorrow morning."

With his shoulder drawn back and standing at his full 5 foot 11 inches height he joined his classmates. He noticed many were silent but his eyes tracked Anabeth offering something. Oh Merlin she was offering cake the headmaster gated things like nonsense and he thought that was nonsense. Although, he supposed of there was any way to get under his skin it was likely to be cake.

Rather than say anything and dig a hole Patrick turned his attention back to the headmaster, “good evening headmaster Scrimgeour” with a curt nod he folded his hands together and waited for class hopeful he wouldn’t die tonight.
Like with the others, the man was ready to strike back with a consequence. Scrimgeour made a mental note to make the stand-quiety-until-class-begins-out-of-respect-for-your-professor rule of his universal. Clearly the children couldn't remember when such a simple rule needed to be followed. Not to mention the man thought the greetings were a waste of time.

"Twenty push-ups or an extra lap in the morning, Dooley?" Scrimgeour offered. He then added, "Five points from Slytherin. You are to remain silent until given permission to speak."

She was tempted to put her hand up and ask if she could do exactly that but she was conscious that their new headmaster didn't like disruptions and.... Bel wasn't sure if it would count as one or not. Even jogging on the spot might be too much of a disruption for all she knew.

Bel looked around the clock tower entrance area and found a spot to stand and wait. "Good evening, sir." Bel greeted, and then shivered slightly. Hopefully they would be doing something that would warm her up. Just as an automatic gesture, Bel checked her wand pocket to make sure her wand was there and then she relaxed as much as the chill in the air allowed. Brrrr.
Scrimgeour noted that Macindoe was dressed as if a never-ending winter had arrived, which, for all he knew, it just might have. Not that the man cared. The cold was bound to build character. What didn't kill them would only make them stronger, in theory. Or there was the other outcome.

His thoughts wavered when the Hufflepuff decided to speak to him. Without batting an eye, he repeated himself almost like clockwork. "You've earned yourself twenty push-ups or an extra lap in the morning, Macindoe" Scrimgeour offered. He then added, "You were not given permission to speak. Five points from Hufflepuff."

He looked around first for any indication what they were going to do today when his eyes landed on Anabeth offering the Headmaster a slice of cake. With a small frown, Dorian wondered if she was going to whine if ...no...when her points were getting taken. Resisting the urge to shake his head, the fourth year took his hands out of his pockets and turned to face the Headmaster.

"Good evening, Headmaster Scrimgeour" he greeted, trying to keep his voice as steady as possible. He was scary just standing there TT
"Same to you, Katharos," Scrimgeour continued, wasting no time to hand out yet another punishment for the breaking of the simplest of rules the man had expected them all to follow. "Five points from Ravenclaw, and you decide if you want to do twenty push-ups now or run an additional lap in the morning for your lack of waiting for permission to speak."

The combination of his favor of the theoretical over practical execution when it came to spell work and his fwooper core alone were enough to enable failure, add in anxiety which then lead to performance issues with his wand and...well...a couple of premature sparks shooting out the tip and singing his parchment was a more optimistic outcome of events.

His nose still red and cheeks lightly burned in thanks to the cold wind from this morning's S.O.R.E, Derf had taken a few precautions to his robes when he had seen where class was being held. Precautions in the form of some gentle heating charms so he at least wouldn't be shivering in his shoes and chattering his teeth like some of his classmates.

"Good evening, Headmaster Scrimgeour," the Hufflepuff greeted dutifully with a polite nod before finding himself somewhere to stand over by Abey for the time being. He simply offered the Gryffindor a small, almost boyish, shrug in greeting as he slid his hands into his pockets for warmth.
His eyes did not blink when the male Hufflepuff Prefect came into view. The man was half-tempted to narrow his eyes at Ashburry-Hawthorne, but he resisted and just allowed his eyes to trail after the boy. After everything that had gone on earlier with said boy at the beginning of the term, Scrimgeour couldn't help but wonder what sort of defiance he was going to have to deal with today.

But it didn't take long for a line to be crossed, whether it was intentional or not. His classroom rules were very clear.

"Five points from Hufflepuff, Ashburry-Hawthorne, for speaking without permission," the headmaster stated. "You can do twenty push-ups now, or run an additional lap for tomorrow's S.O.R.E."

"Hello headmaster," she said.
She moved her fingers a bit as she tried to warm them up standing in a spot not saying anything. When they were warm, she put them at her side and kept silent. Standing still and silent. She couldn't possibly get in trouble for breathing right?
At this rate, the man was thinking about just taking everyone's precious points. What was so hard about following his rules? It wasn't like he was asking them to become master alchemists overnight. But, apparently, refraining from saying anything was too hard of a task for the third year Slytherin.

"My rules are clear, Queen. No speaking unless I grant you permission to do so. Five points will be taken from Slytherin, and you have the choice of completing twenty push-ups right now or running an extra lap tomorrow morning."

Finally. Finally there was a batch of students who knew the rules and could comprehend simple English.

The man watched as Rousseau arrived at the tower entrance and noticed that he had broken away from the group ever-so-slightly. Scrimgeour gave the fifth year Ravenclaw a nod in greeting. The man was certain that this one would go far in life if he didn't fall influence to his more foolish peers.

These days, it was just easier to bite her tongue rather than even risk talking out of turn.

So instead, she simply smiled at the professor in greeting before moving towards the back of the crowd, which was quite unlike her. She wrapped her Ravenclaw scarf a bit tighter around her neck, hoping this was just an intro to the lesson and they'd be moving back inside shortly.
For a moment, the man thought that the little Ravenclaw had something to ask him. But, of course, he wasn't going to allow her to speak. Not now at least. There was a time and a place for that, and it would be for the purposes of learning, not random conversation.

He began to open his mouth, to tell her to wipe that smile off her face, but Gladin had quickly made her way to the back of the crowd, which was fine by him as long as she was paying attention.

Finally arriving, Ewan gave the Professor a small smile and a nod of respect. Despite his obvious distaste for the rules, he was not about to disrespect the man for the sake of it. If he was going to break the rules and aggravate the headmaster, he do it when it had the biggest effect.
Like the second year's previous housemates, the man didn't have anything to say to Jones. It was about time that a crop of students were leading by example. He wasn't shocked at all that most of them were Ravenclaws.

The old man was surprised that Montmorency had decided to remain silent. He knew that the boy wasn't the brightest fwooper in the flock, even with his Defence lessons mostly being practical since theory wasn't going to save anyone's neck in the real world. But the sixth year Gryffindor managed to surprise him.

Was this intentional? Or had the boy just been lucky today? They may never know.

She couldn't say the same.

The Gryffindor made her way towards the clock tower, her whole body shaking and teeth chattering as she walked. No amount of heating charms could keep her warm, it seemed. Trust me, she tried them all. "Professor," she managed through gritted teeth, before turning on her heels and walking to Théo.

Typically it wasn't DADA until Zoryn asked if they were going to learn about DRAGONS. But Zoryn quickly learned to stop asking Scrimgeour for anything that would lead to any sort of child happiness. The man knew nothing of happy. He was such a sour grape.
Then there was Spinnet. Scrimgeour was bracing himself, waiting for the day she started asking stupid questions about dragons, which was in the Creatures curriculum, or whatever nonsense the girl thought of on the top of her head. But he was surprised that all she did was say a single word to him.

What a shame that it was going to cost her.

"You were not given permission to speak, Spinnet," the man said flatly. "Five points from Gryffindor. Now, you decide: give me twenty now, or run an additional lap in the morning."

Just because she loved the snow didn't mean she wanted to stand out in it for the duration of the class. Plus, any sign of happiness seemed to be a crime these days.

Her uniform was in perfect form but she wanted to craw further into her cloak because the sun was slowly setting and it was getting colder. The cold in the mornings during the runs was already causing her to struggle with staying awake in classes. Sure, she might adjust to it but she wasn't hopeful about it right now. She stifled a yawn the best as she could when she finally made to her destination.

She gave a curt nod to the Headmaster Professor Scrimgeour in greeting and fell in line along with the other students trying not to shake as another yawn caused her jaw to quake a bit in the effort she was using to keep her mouth shut. No speaking unless spoken to translated to her as keep your mouth shut and she was going to do just that.
A looked was casted in Hopsisk's direction when she arrived for class. Seeing nothing wrong with her outward appearance, though, prompted the man to carry onward. Again, another Ravenclaw that could follow simple rules was in their midst.

Mallari's appearance and general demeanor was appreciated. So much, in fact, that the man respectfully gave her a nod of his head in acknowledgement. She was still, her uniform as it was meant to be, and she was remaining silent. So far her efforts were working in her favour.

“Hey — I mean… Good evening, Sir.”
He didn’t want to start the lesson on the wrong foot, or Merlin forbid be forced into more exercise, so he made sure to greet the Headmaster with all the respect he could muster.
The Slytherin Prefect's efforts, however, were not working in his favour. In fact, he was trying too hard. Way too hard. Though the man had noticed some progression with the sixth year with his S.O.R.E. and ensuring that his appearance was in tip-top shape, the boy still failed to remain silent or indicate, with a mere raise of his hand, that he desired permission to speak.

"Five points from Slytherin. You should know just like the others that you need permission to speak before doing so, Carden. Drop down and give me twenty this instant, or you can opt for running another lap tomorrow morning."

Oh dear, Merlin...

School had been in procession for two months now and Choi still was stumbling over how to pronounce his name? That was almost as worse as speaking without permission. The man's eyes narrowed.

"Ten points from Slytherin, Choi. My rules are very clear, and one of them states that you are to not speak unless given permission," Scrimgeour grunted, "and I suggest you learn how to pronounce my surname correctly beforehand if you intend to use it. Drop and give me twenty now." The extra lap in the morning was not going to be an option for this one.

So after checking his uniform and all of his books, he headed to the Clock Tower, offering a stiff nod in the direction of the dictator. "Good evening, Headmaster Scrimgeour."
Though the first year Gryffindor's appearance and prompt arrival was appreciated, the greeting was not. Did the boy suffer from memory loss like so many of the others? His rules had been posted and they were clearly written.

The headmaster's attention was quickly grasped by Starson's appearance. Her hair was a mess and her robes were askew. The girl was lucky that she was making quick work of fixing those problems because Scrimgeour was just seconds away from taking points away from her and even issuing an evening of detention.

If only she had remembered the rule about when it was appropriate to speak. What a pity.

"Five points from Gryffindor. Drop and give me twenty, Starson, for speaking without my permission to do so. Or you can run extra lap around the pitch in the morning. You decide."

Taking the risk to speak was unwise. Scrimgeour, almost without even having to think about it at this point, grunted and handed out a consequence to Primeaux for her lack of reason and adherence to one of his simplest rules and expectations.

"You are not to speak without permission, Primeaux. Five points will be taken from Ravenclaw. You can drop and give me twenty or choose instead to make an extra lap around the pitch in the morning."

And, yes, it was decided. He would be making a new school-wide rule very soon so that there was consistency across every subject.
At the stroke of six o'clock, the sound of chiming echoed throughout the tower. Since they all were at the base of it, the chiming was significantly louder than what it would have been on the opposite side of the castle down on the first floor. Even though the noise was extremely loud and incredibly close, Scrimgeour simply stood there, standing still as ever, acting as if the chiming wasn't happening at all. The headmaster's focus was on the door the students had come through, looking to see who all, if anyone, decided that today would be a great day to arrive late.

Once the chiming had ceased, the man took a moment to look out at the bodies that were standing before him. He didn't like how scattered and spread out they all were. That, though, was a minor problem he would be taking care of soon enough.

"As you all can see, we are not gathered in the usual classroom setting, nor are we meeting at our usual class time," Scrimgeour began, hopefully stating the obvious to them. "Today's lesson requires us to be outside of the traditional classroom setting. In fact, it requires that we not even be in the castle. Soon we, under my supervision, will be leaving the shelter of the Clock Tower and venturing into the Forbidden Forest."

He paused, his face very serious and demanding everyone's attention. "There is absolutely no room for disruptions today, and you must follow my instructions the instant they are given. Not doing so will result in severe consequences, which may not happen by my hand." The man did not care to elaborate on what he meant by that. If any of them decided to behave foolishly, they would learn their lesson the hard way.

"Before we head down there for the main portion of today's lesson, I want to stress the importance of why you need to listen to instructions and be vigilant," he stated, his eyes honing in on students he knew were bound to be problematic. "So, enlighten me: What is one Dark creature that is known to or may reside within the forest, and what is one fact you know about that creature?"

OOC: Thank you all for coming to the first role-played DADA lesson of the term! I appreciate those of you who have posted your characters already and hope you enjoy the lesson. If you haven't posted, please feel free to jump in at any time — just know that there will be consequences for a late arrival should you decide to have your student character show up late.

To start of the lesson, Scrimgeour has asked everyone to share one Dark creature that they know or think lives in the forest in addition to one fact about the creature that they mentioned. You can respond to one or both parts, piggy-back off of someone, or elaborate on something someone said. Please, however, try to not repeat something someone said. Students will be expected to raise their hands and be given permission to speak. Please have your characters do so and just assume Scrimgeour called on them.

The lesson will continue roughly 24 hours from now.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

At Headmaster Scrimgeour's question, Daisy raised her hand and spoke when allowed to. "The Acromantula reside in the Forbidden Forest. They're gigantic spiders with the capability of human speech."

Skyler mentally sighed and got to the ground and did her twenty push ups with out complaining. Rather to do twenty push ups then another lap in the freezing cold tomorrow. She lost points all over this year for everything. Why not now?? When she was done, she stood up and didn't say anything, trying her best to not cry. She was being respectful by greeting the headmaster. What ever what ever. She gets in trouble for being on the verge of crying. What ever. At this point, she did not care, she did not care at all and ahe meant that, Skyler felt numb at this point of the year. She debated wether or not coming to Hogwarts next year or not. She stood there after her push ups not giving an answer to the question but was silent. She stood and was silent.

Well, the dropping cake everything was comical now right? Even the point loss. It was a pity really that politeness was deemed so reproachful by the new absolutely robotic Headmaster. What did he think that their greetings were done in spite of his rules – well, they likely were. He was a tyrant after all.

Standing there Beth just nodded. As he doled out punishment after punishment – the points were, of course the only one that truly stung. For now Beth simply raised her hand ”Headmaster, there is a rather large pack of wolves in the forest that if legend is to be believed were born of two werewolves” she spoke and then slowly, carefully lowered herself to the ground and began doing the pushups.

Seeeeee she was going to prove that she could do this….and really who wanted another lap in the morning? ONE….two…three – she glanced around at everyone and gave her comrades in arms a wink before continuing on with the exercise. Seven – eight…and on and on and on she went her arms were beginning to ache as she kept going. Twenty.

… twenty one – she kept going, and going. Her arm shook from the cold and she was done. She’d done it. With a slight air of defiance she stood up and continued to look the headmaster straight in the eyes.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no!

She'd lost track of time, an action that wouldn't have been so bad if she hadn't also forgotten the change in location of the lesson. In her mind, it was a simple skip down to the defense classroom, and based on the time she thought she had left, it could've worked. Now, she was running for what might as well had been dear life, trying to get there before it was too late. Jessa Cambridge was not a runner. She didn't engage in unnecessary physical activity, but there was nothing unnecessary about this. The man was very clear about punctuality and this badge on her chest somehow made her actions more reprehensible than if anyone else had done them.

Her first mistake was losing track of time to the potion she'd been tending. It was a crucial one for the next step of her experiment--but Merlin. The second mistake was running down to the defense classroom when she should've headed straight for the clocktower. It'd eaten up valuable time. The third mistake was not swallowing a potion then heading to the Healer with the excuse she was sick to avoid the man's ire.

In her hurry, she forgot all about appropriate charms to keep this cold air to a minimum near her lungs and appropriate pacing while running. Sometimes there were more important things.

The Ravenclaw groaned at the sound of the chiming clock, the surest indication that despite her best effort, she hadn't made it in time--but she didn't stop running. At the entrance she skidded to a stop inside and remained by the back to avoid drawing too much attention to herself. Her chest heaved forcefully and her eyes immediately darted to the man. Her heart now thumping both from the sudden exercise and the anxiety of the man's reaction didn't help the breathing along any bit. Did she apologize now? He'd already begun talking. Would interrupting really help her case? Was it better to wait?

Not able to think entirely straight, Jessa reached into her pocket, fumbling around for her inhaler while he explained what would be happening this lesson. Two puffs and she was somewhat better equipped to handle things. Now she could be STOKED about them entering the forest....y'know, if she wasn't suddenly worried this man was about to go off on her.

The moment he asked his question, her hand shot up. The logic here was simple. He wanted people to contribute to the lesson. Being late AND quiet would likely not go over well. First, another deep breath, then "Hinkypunks are dark creatures, Sir. They don't live in the forbidden forest," probably, "but they've got the classification." ALSO. "I'm sorry for..." Her hands moved about, gesturing back through the exit as if this helped the explanation. "I didn't....the time.....I ran as fast as I could." Only at the end of this did she realize she hadn't actually SAID what she was sorry about. Another breath. Calm down, Cambridge. Circe. "I'm sorry for being late. Won't happen again." She hoped. This was nerve wracking enough even without his reaction.

Wait…so his ‘don’t speak unless spoken to’ rule, unlike his lapdog’s, did include greetings? And, were they supposed to answer with their choice? Deciding to just do the push-ups now instead of trying to figure that out, Archer dropped into the proper stance (not the modified with her knees on the ground) and did the twenty, not counting them out loud. Because, shut up, that would count as speaking without being spoken to. Of course, this caused the back of her coat, and the phoenix charmed there, to be revealed to everyone. Oh well.

Okay, so the Headmaster, who was supposedly hired to make the school safer, was taking them into the Forbidden Forest, a forest that was notorious worldwide for having all kinds of dangerous things in it. She couldn’t be the only one who saw the irony in that. In fact, Archer had to bite back a chuckle. So much for safety.

”Dark wizards’ souls or whatever tend to hide out in there. Definitely don’t want to get possessed by one of those, lest you end up like poor Professor Quirrell…” She was unable to keep the amusement out of her voice.

Skyler glanced quickly at Jessa as she came in and then quickly back to the headmaster, she was not going to get in trouble anymore, hopefully. Okay, so she cared but she did not care if that made sense. Skyler quickly cleared her thoughts though and focused on the question at hand, not entirely sure if she should have a repeat answer but in her own words. No. Don't. You can think better then that Queen, you know you're smarter then this. At least you stopped crying.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

.........5 points...he lost 5 points....

5 POINTS!!! His PERFECT record was gone!! T___T

Dorian spend his time controlling his breathing even when the Headmaster continued on by saying he could do twenty push ups now or run an extra lap tomorrow.

Like he was in a state to do push ups now! HE JUST LOST HIS PREFECT RECORD. What he needed was to sit down and breaaaathe. But then he'd lose more points or possibly even get a detention and the thought of both was panicking him even further.

´Calm down, Breathe....' he told himself and successfully calmed himself down. Phew. Instead of choosing an punishment out loud, the Ravenclaw kept standing which meant he would run an extra lap tomorrow. This was the correct way right? Merlin's Beard this was so confusing.

FORBIDDEN FOREST??!

Nope. Nope nope nope nope NOPE. He was not going in there! He didn't care if he was with an ex-Auror or not. He'd rather stay here and write an essay about every creature that lived in the forest but he was NOT going in there.

Holding up a visibly shaking hand, Dorian waited until he was given permission to speak "Werewolves...Sir" was the only thing he could manage to speak out.

Skyler had finally found an answer after racking her brain. She raised her hand silently and waited to be called on.

"Trolls sir live in the forbidden forest. They grow to be around three meters tall." She says not saying anything more.

The point loss probably should have bothered Stasya but by now she’d pretty much already figured that someone was going to lose points. Of course, she’d rather it not have been her, just because she did actually feel like she ought to be a role model since she was a prefect, but that was where it all hit a snag. Because she’d basically lost points for being polite, and after literally half or more of the students had lost points in Divination for exactly the opposite reason, she was starting to wonder if the headmaster and his followers weren’t actually aware of how their policies were actually very confusing in their discrepancies. However, she chose to keep her thoughts to herself, while also deciding that this was the end of her being polite to the headmaster. He had really strange ideas as to what showed respect for someone, obviously.

Either way, simply because she knew certain others would likely choose to stay with her if she had to do an extra lap the next morning, she immediately and silently dropped to the floor to do the twenty pushups that had been ordered. It wasn’t a request, and she wasn’t going to pretend that it had been. By now, she suspected that the headmaster didn’t know what a request was. Possibly, he didn’t know what respect was either, but she wasn’t going to allow herself to feel sorry for him.

eighteen, nineteen…twenty. As she completed the last pushup, she got to her feet again just as silently, considering if it was worth bothering to speak to offer a suggestion as to the question that had been posed. Once again, not asked, even if she figured it counted as a direction to speak. “I don’t know if they necessarily count as Dark, but there have been rumours that there are Forest Trolls living in the Forbidden Forest. They’re pale green and very strong and violent, but not very intelligent,” she finally offered, dusting any remaining dirt from the ground and having one the pushups off her hands and back to the floor. Odds were the rule about being presentable still stood. It was getting a little confusing.

Sylvie bit her lip but otherwise stayed silent as most of her friends lost points. Sometimes being stubborn worked in her favour. Shoutout to Tayo though! Mentally high fiving her bestie, she would make sure to laugh about this with him later. The sixteen year old stuck her hands inside her pockets and listened to Scrimmy speak, her eyes widening at the reveal of where they were going. She did not trust him, and she was sure not many of them did, so today’s lesson location was… an interesting choice for a class. Then again, Sylvie’s a sixth year now and all, it’s about time she had some nice lessons in the Forbidden Forest.

Well, at least it wouldn’t be boring right?

Her hand went up after a few moments. "Uh, thestrals? I think?" were they dark creatures? They weren’t really cheerful creatures, but Sylvie didn’t take CoMC anymore so it had been a while since she’s looked at a textbook. "They, uh, you can’t see them unless you’ve seen someone die."

Oh, oh wait. "Sir." There. See? She’s learning. She’s gonna have Scrimmy all figured out before Christmas break. Not that she’s going to like him or anything, she’s mad about all these rules as much as the next person, but it’s nice to lose points and get detention at every turn.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

Zac couldn't tell if this class was going to be a mess or not. But it was definitely a mess he wanted to witness, even if this school was going to ruin one of his favourite subjects for him.

And just when he thought the headmaster was running out of tricks (taking points, and ordering pushups was getting old), his eyes widened as he announced they would be entering the dark forbidden forest. Could he slow clap? Because it was decided; THIS WAS GOING TO BE A PERFECT MESS.

Forgetting all about his mother's awful letter, which had pretty much sucked the living energy out of him, Zac found himself unconsciously grinning a little - because yes, this was very exciting.

Upon hearing the question, his hand shot up even before he had decided on an answer, but when his turn came, he said, "Blast-Ended Skrewt, sir? They are considered to be quiet dangerous, since they are half breeds," He definitely wouldn't want to come cross one. "They are known to be very ill tempered and show no mercy when they use their blasts against an enemy" Or so he had read.

Hanna tried not to move a muscle in her face as Professor Scrimgeour announced where they were going to be having their lesson. The Forbidden Forest. Gulp. Also source for a big gulp was his declaration of potential severe consequences, potentially by his hand. Yikes.

Hanna raised her hand, waiting for Professor Scrimgeour to give her permission to speak, before saying "Th-the acromantulas have a taste for human flesh," she said, slightly worried they might be facing these creatures. Please Merlin, no.

Given she'd greeted every professor every single time for every lesson she'd ever been to without being punished before, Bel was caught off guard by the double punishment - points and push ups, though, truth be told, she wasn't too upset with either. The push ups she welcomed, and quite simply dropped where she was and quickly hit twenty in quick succession. Which WAS a nice little way to warm up, and no struggle for her whatsoever. As for the points..... it didn't upset her exactly, though she'd never lost any before that she could recollect, it was more that.... she knew some people worked really hard to earn them, and she didn't want anyone to feel like their hard work wasn't worthwhile on her account.

She got back to her feet in time for the lesson to properly begin. A dark creature that might live in the forest? Bel didn't know all of what was there, given her background was Australian things rather than what could be found here in the UK, but she half wondered if it was a trick question. She could hear a few kids give answers that were.... well they were just creatures. Not dark creatures, necessarily. Would they get in trouble for saying creatures that lived there that weren't dark in nature?

Bel thought about it, and keeping in mind the whole.... be vigilant thing, she put her hand up, waited to be called on, and then spoke, "Professor, while I'm not familiar with what is specifically in the forest.... I reckon that last term's situation with there being Inferi under the lake proves that there could be absolutely any kind of dark creature hidden in the forest that we don't even know about, so we need to learn about all of them, just in case, and maybe even learn how to recognize any sign of them being around. I think... if we went into the forest just with some list of what we think is there for sure, it might make us less likely to be vigilant about something unexpected or dangerous that we aren't prepared for." And honestly? After the previous term? Bel never wanted to be unprepared like that ever again.

Max grit his teeth and tried his hardest not to glare at the Headmaster. He reminded Max of the bad guys he often read about in his comics. If only he had the power of ferrokinesis because right now he had a number of brilliantly twisted ideas that involved Scrimgeour and that metal arm of his.

He wasn’t entirely bothered by the point loss. Sure it sucked but it wasn’t exactly the end of the world and he was kind of used to it by now. Push ups though? The others made them look like a piece of cake…… especially Bel. He knew there was no way his matchstick arms were about to manage twenty push ups though. Nor was he about to let the Headmaster see him struggle. Or anyone else for that matter. Absolutely no way. Not a chance.

Which meant he was stuck with the alternative.

“I’ll take the extra lap… Sir.” Even if it meant he had to walk it and skip breakfast.

As for dark magical creatures that lived in the forest?

The few he knew off the top of his head had already been mentioned and he wasn’t really in the mood to contribute so he stayed quiet.

With a small grimace, Ewan couldn’t help but imagine all of the creatures that lay await in the forest. Did they really have to go in? I mean, it’s not like he was afraid, it just seemed like a bit of an unnecessary risk. But, what would be the point in bringing this up? His protest would only be shot down and then he’d lose points and get detention.

With a small nod at the headmaster’s instructions, he waited patiently with his hand up in the air until he was called upon, “Sir, I believe in the past there may have been a giants in the forest although I do not believe they are native to the forest”. Pausing for a second, he continued, “Giants tend to live in tribes and are led by the strongest giant, also known as the Gurg”. With a small shiver, he pulled his cloak around himself tighter. For once, he was glad he was wearing his uniform. It was certainly helping him stay warm.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

She was in the clear. He said nothing to her which meant she was doing right. Another yawn was forcing its way through her body and she suppressed it the best she could. Maybe she should just let the next one out and they would hopefully stop coming.

The clock tower chimed and Merlin was it loud. Six O'clock on the dot. Kaitlynn struggled to hear as Headmaster Professor Scrimgeour spoke about what they would be dong tonight because there was a ringing in her ears left over from the clock tower. She could've sworn she heard something about the Forbidden Forest and Dark Creatures, but she wasn't entirely sure.

Classmates around her began either doing pushups or raising hand and the ones who were given the permission to speak mentioned creature that were in the Forbidden Forest. So they were going into the forest and he obviously sked a question about creatures in the forest. So she raised her hand and once called upon, "Unicorns, sir, live in the forbidden forest. They have a Ministry Classification of XXXX and have multiple magical properties." She wasn't going to elaborate much further.

Loveable Gryffinpuff| Stella Bella

She lost points and she was only a first year!

Stella felt like crying right there and then but she put on a brave face, he wasn't going to see her cry! Although she thought it was stupid that she had to do push ups for being nice! Where was the kindess of greeting someone went? Oh...wait, this was the Headmaster they were talking about he was as soulless as a dementor. Yup...she definitely felt like she was in military school now.

Without saying a word, Stella started doing her push ups on the ground making sure was straight and perfect. She didn't want to do anymore push ups and the S.O.R.E. exercises already makes her sick she didn't need another lap. Yeah...she was going to make sure she had everything perfect for this Mr. Beady Eyes Stone Face Dementor and not speak to him again.

Eighteen... Nineteen.... and Twenty!

Standing up she made sure everything was straightened out on her and she wasn't dirty before she stood firm with her hands beside her looking straight ahead not saying a word. She wasn't in the mood to answer any of his stupid questions and she was trying to catch her breath but not make it so obvious that she was. Not only was half the answers already answered anyways so she didn't know what to say.
