It was the day before Halloween, and the Fall weather was lovely this afternoon and absolutely perfect for their lesson today. All the new school rules aside, Professor Wayland was not going to break tradition. He had the lesson set up just outside of the Barn as usual, with his trusty blackboard and hay bale semi circle.
No hay bale throne today? Professor Wayland sat sipping his Chai on a single hay bale. The Professor was a little out of sorts, but he would press through for his students. And so he sat, sipping away with a quiet smile, impatiently awaiting his fantastic pupils to get there so this fun lesson could be started.
OOC: Welcome to the first CoMC Lesson of the term! Though this is our first lesson together, this is not the first CoMC lesson of the year, so please keep that in mind! Please make sure you take a gander at the CoMC Rules while waiting. Class will start in 24 hours. Class has started! Please, jump in and pretend you were there the whole time! But remember if you have your charrie show up late there will be IC consequences!
Hanna looked up as she heard her name and recognised Kaitlynn from the common room. She smiled and said "Great! Hiya Kaitlynn," then gathered her things and moved over to where her partner was.
"So... I think we just need to get one of the boxes for now. Have you ever seen a Bowtruckle up close?" It was something she hadn't seen up close and personal. Only in photographs, really.
Hanna went to the front where Professor Wayland had the supplies and grabbed a box, taking it back to where she and Kaitlynn were working.
She nodded. "On box should be good and no I haven't so I'm kind of excited for this." Kaitlynn watched as Hanna went and grabbed their box and when she came back the second year decided to have a look inside.
"Looks like we might get to see a Bowtruckle up close today," she said looking at the wood lice, fairy eggs, and goggles. "Although, I'm not sure if it'll be for a happy reason. The only reason I can think we may need goggles is..." she let the thought drop into silence. Were they going to try to take some wood from the trees?

It was obvious that he was rather relieved, and Madison sent him a smile. Abra. Right. She made a note to remember his name, especially since he was one of her student leaders. "I'm Madison." Which wasn't a hard name to remember, really.
"Oh, yeah. Sounds good to me." Madison nodded. She was looking forward to this activity, as she was sure that it was going to prove to be fun.
Madison. Abra could remember that name easily, and he smiled as he got to his feet. After nodding in return, he made his way to where the boxes were laid out and grabbed the first unclaimed one he came to, before returning to the hay bales and Madison.
But he couldn't quite resist taking a peek inside the box as he sat down, and in doing so caught sight of the jar, container, and goggles. "Bowtruckle food," he said, dropping the lid again and placing the box down on the hay bale between them. "I guess that's for keeping them happy while we do... whatever we're doing."

It made him want to take her to see MORE of them. Maybe he could arrange something with Professor Wayland since...well...there were new rules in state and such, the majority of which Derf had no real problems with. Many were kinda, you know, common sense and some things that should have been more rigorously enforced ages ago. The curfew was just...unfortunate in terms of nocturnal creature viewing.
Setting the box down, Derf tugged on his tie to loosen it juuuuuuuust a hair. "Picketta taught me in," he nodded. And no, this time it was not THAT sort of dance. "Okay so...the first thing you gotta do is tap your feet like so," he began, demonstrating by tapping his feet in a few specific rhythm - start with the left for a 1...then quick 2,3, alternating the right and left and leaving the right foot in the air just a bit. Then repeating the process but this time with the right foot leading on 1. "You gotta be really precise here since, well, humans lack the necessary appendage to complete the ritual," he explained. "Though the majority if it is in the tone and pitch of your clicking next...and making sure that you fan out your fingers niiiiice and wide with your palms facing them and then bowing them until your fingers touch the ground. It's to show that you mean no harm." Since, well, bowtruckles did the most damage by using their long sharp fingers. Fanning them out and presenting them to the other was a way of making one look defenseless. "Like this!"
To which, naturally, he demonstrated.
Natalie's childhood obsession with mermaids had been one thing, but it was really that mooncalf lesson two years ago that had sparked any interest in creatures. They were CUTE and HARMLESS and their giant eyeballs were ADORABLE. She still longed to go watch them do their moondance, but the new rules enforced made that a bit difficult.
"Picketta's taught you quite a few moves," Natalie replied with a sly smile, remembering that ONE dance that Picketta had once taught Derf. Back when they were young and innocent. Those were the days.
Derf started moving and Natalie started watching, trying to follow each step he took. She even tried copying him while he did it, but those quick steps was where he lost her. She didn't really have much rhythm in her bones, so naturally she was bad at dancing and these quick bowtruckle steps. Though, it probably would have been easier if she had more than two legs.
She didn't bow down yet, but she giggled when Derf demonstrated, her hands up in front of her with her fingers spread as wide as they would go. "Do I look harmless?" she asked when Derf was finished demonstrating. Seeeee how WIDE her fingers were spread??? SO harmless.
Don't want to get on their bad side? Trust him not to get on their bad side?
Lucas........ blinked. He couldn't help but wonder if Wayland HAD gotten on the bad side of a Bowtruckle. Could they have THAT story? So he knew what not to do if he ever came face-to-face with a Bowtruckle? They could have a campfire and share the story and it would be much better than that Divination lesson where-
.........
What was that about PARTNERS?!
His eyes widened and he looked around wildly. People were already getting into partners and he was just..... sitting there. But the idea of asking for a partner in yet ANOTHER lesson terrified him and made him feel sweaty but so did going up to someone to ask to be partners but so did being the only one without a partner and and.....
Yeah. Okay. He needed to find a partner. NOW.
Instead of calling out, Lucas got up from his seat and started wandering around to see if someone was free or LOOKED like they were free and didn't look so scary to approach. Because some of these older kids were too-cool-for-school and he had a feeling that they wouldn't want to partner up with him.Just like......
....... this kid right here.
The first year stood there, looking as if he was staring at the boy but mentally, he was trying to practice his hellos. And how he was going to act. And trying to convince himself that this was a GOOD idea because otherwise, he was going to end up on his own and he didn't want that.
He did, eventually, approach the older kid with the good hair - how did he get it to be like that?! - with a smile on his face. "Hey! Do you want to be partners?"
It was seeming more and more like you had to actually get a partner and that was just a drag. Théo was just mentally sighing and not wanting to get up and ask anyone even tho it seemed all his friends already had partners.
Rude of them honestly.
Maybe he would get lucky and someone would ask him. Nah that wouldn't happen........
Ah
Serves him right for even trying to act smart or whatever. Théo looked over at the first year asking him. You dont see that everyday. The kid had...well you know. to be fair he wouldnt even be on a list Théo made up of who he would like to partner up with. But who cares.
"Sure, we can be partners. Im Théo. Want we to get the supplies?"
See look at him paying attention and being nice. He should get an award. And well he did want to get up from sitting.

“Cool. Thanks,” he mumbled shyly, squeeeeeezing onto the hay bale beside her. He was sure these hay bales were meant for one bum and one bum only and he would’ve been more comfortable standing but he didn’t want to be rude. “I don’t really know all that much about bowtruckles so sorry in advance if I suck.”

Zoryn wasn't about to tell him that WayOld would probably be paying very close attention to them either. 'Cause unfortunately Max was stuck with the wrong partner for the day. The only slightly promising bit was that sometimes WayOld didn't have the energy to deal with Zor's shenanigans so.

Lucas fidgeted on his spot. Now that he'd done the asking, he had something ELSE to worry about: what was he going to do if the older kid said no? He'd have to do a walk of shame as he tried to find someone else who'd want to pair up with him. And what if it was too-
Oh. Sure. Yes. That was a yes!
Relieved, the first year smiled. "Hey, Théo. I'm Lucas." He almost considered giving him his surname as a test to see if he knew Emma - who didn't?! - but he decided against it. Not a good idea. Not right now. "Yeah, sure. Let's go." Together. Because they were a TEAM now. A very weird-looking team because he was very small and his partner was.......
....... well.
"You're very tall, you know," he blurted out before he could help himself. But it was true! He was TALL.

She looked, she definitely looked and as it turned out there didn’t seem like anyone left for her to partner with. Not particularly bummed, Jessa raised her hand to gain the Professor’s attention. Even as she did, the Ravenclaw gave another look about the area wanting to make absolutely sure.
“Professor, I don’t have a partner, may I summon one of my choosing?” Very serious question. She could. Lise was currently on standby, as were a few of her other dolls. All would be useful today—though some she would have to tweak the charms for.
Lise would be the best fit for the job, having the most autonomy.
She moved forward to collect her own little kit of sorts, noticing there were two goggles. It wouldn’t be necessary for the doll but for the sake of getting it right, she was sure she could shrink it down.
Duplicating herself was another option.

Smiling back at the Professor now, he couldn’t help but find the Bowtruckles interesting, despite the fact he was not a natural at the subject. Ewan had almost finished scrawling down the facts that were being shared with them until the Professor uttered the word “Pairs”. Ugh. Ewan did not agree with pairs. It forced people to pick between friends and he was not all for that. With the briefest of smiles back to Professor Wayland, Ewan then ran his hand through his short brown hair and looked around at Annabeth. “Hey, want to be a pair?” he asked nonchalantly, his eyes probing hers, judging her for an answer.
With a brief hesitation, not waiting for an answer, he stood and stretch his lanky legs briefly before walked over to supplies that they would need. Picking up everything in one big messy pile, he shuffled back to their spot on the hay and lay it down in front of them, ready for the next part of the lesson, noting that if she didn’t want to be his partner, he’d already have the equipment at least.
Beth was…well, Bething and scanning the faces of everyone she could see when Professor Wayland began speaking again. She did, of course grin when he commented on what she had brought up. Seeeee she was smart – that was one of the only things she cared about right now.
”thank you Professor,” she grinned and listened to the spiel about Bowtruckles. Oh, oh! They were partnering up…oh, no that wasn’t fun someone was always left out…that was, sad. Very sad.
Beth was looking for a lone student when Ewan nonchalantly asked. If she’d partner with him. Was…he staring? She wondered and moved to answer just as he disappeared to gather supplies. ”I was going to ask if you’d gather supplies but I guess I don’t have to?” she questioned. That little bit the only response she was giving for now. He’d get it right? She’d partner with him…for now.

Duplicating herself was another option.
Tristan looked at Jessa like she had two heads, before quickly catching himself and giving her a small smile. "Sorry Jessa, but no. Why don't you go help Kaitlynn and Hanna? I"m sure they could learn a lot from you." He paused, "If you don't want to help them, I think you are probably one of the few students that could handle this alone. I'll be here if you need help. But I will leave the decision up to you." He hoped she chose to help, but he knew Jessa didn't usually like to work with anyone else.
Checking his watch, he looked around to make sure that everyone had paired up. He looked over at the little creature who happened to be staring at all the students, and whispered, "Alright, Dahlia, you stay in my pocket please, while I demonstrate what they are to do, okay?" He handed her a Fairy Egg and she nodded in agreement, and she slid down to the bottom of his pocket.
With a grin, he clapped his hands twice to get everyone's attention. "Alright, so in your supply kit there are two pairs of goggles, a container of dried Wood Lice, an empty container, and a jar of Fairy Eggs. You MUST wear the goggles because I don't want your eyes to get hurt...just in case. If you wear glasses, don't worry, they are magical goggles and will shape to your face so they wont be uncomfortable." He paused to collect his thoughts. "Now, your task is to attempt to lure one Bowtruckle per pair of students, and one only. The Bowtruckles in these trees are a wild branch from the Forbidden Forest, not the Bowtruckles that you have encountered in our barn. They are not like Dahlia who will pretty much go to anyone that gives her food." He heard a faint quick squeaking and a little kick in his pocket and grinned.
"It is going to be a lot harder to convince these creatures that you are a friend and not a threat. They may reject you completely, if that's the case, move on to another creature so that you don't get harmed." He paused to let that warning sink in. "After you have lured your Bowtruckle, one of you needs to keep the creature distracted, while the other harvests a two inch by at least 12 inch in length piece of wood from the tree using the Severing Charm, or harvest enough wood lice to fill the empty container in your kit. They aren't hard to find. All you have to do is make a small hole in the tree and then use a summoning charm and they will start flying into your jar." He said with a small grin.
He walked slowly towards one of the trees in the pasture. "Now watch me as I attempt to lure one of these lovely little creatures." He paused about a foot away from the trunk, and slowly filled his hand with Wood Lice. He held his hand up to one of the branches, and waited patiently for a creature to appear. Soon enough to brown beady eyes were staring down at his hand. He grinned, hoping to show the creature that he wasn't a threat, but apparently that didn't soothe the creature. It quickly poked one of his fingers, and ran back up into the tree, hidden by the thick foliage. Tristan quickly transferred the wood lice to his other hand, resting it against another branch close by. Soon enough another creature that had to have been exactly eight inches and very hefty for a Bowtruckle, crept it's way out of the leaves, sniffing at his hand before plopping itself down and eating it's way through half of the wood lice before Tristan could move his hand towards him. He quickly plucked a fairy egg from his pocket offering it to the chubby little Bowtruckle. It squeaked with delight and snatched the egg away.
"Once one Bowtruckle has accepted you, the rest will not bother you. So your partner cannot harvest wood or wood lice until a Bowtruckle has accepted the food. As you have seen, it may take a couple attempts to get one to accept. If a Bowtruckle pokes your finger, don't be startled, that is a warning and you should move away from that branch immediately. If you decide to harvest wood, take it from under the branch that that Bowtruckle was on." He looked down at his new friend, and saw that it had eaten ever bit of wood lice and the entire egg with in the few minutes of his explanation. He chuckled a little, and moved his hand back to the exact branch the chubby guy was on. Tristan marked and X into the wood with his wand. "I marked it so you don't go to this branch; he's been fed." Tristan said with a grin, before walking back over to the group.
"Alright now is the time to decide who is doing what and get on with your tasks! If you harvest wood, there is a container by the barn labeled 'Wand Wood' where you can deposit it. If you harvest the wood lice, as stated before collect them into the empty container and leave them in your kit. Good luck! And if you have an questions, meed more food, or need help just call for me! " Tristan gestured to the trees with his arms like he was showing the prize from a muggle game show.
OOC: Alright SO! Figure out who is doing the luring and who is doing the harvesting, and what you will be harvesting. Then Lure the creatures exactly like Professor Wayland did. Once you have lured a creature and it is thoroughly distracted by the food, harvest the wood/wood lice. Diffindo is the severing charm and Accio is the summoning charm, for those who don't remember. Once you or your partner have harvested, place the creature back onto it's branch. Post as much as you want! Have fun with it, but please no serious injuries! You can have their hands/face get scratched up, but no eyes, please, seeing as they have protective goggles! Thank you! You have until the 25th at 10 pm EST to complete this activity. If you have questions please PM or VM me, OR call out the professor in a post! Good luck and have fun!

Now it was her turn to look at the man as if he had two heads...and five horns while she was at it. It was funny he'd said the choice was left up to her after saying what he did. Offering for her to work alone if she didn't want to help them. Brilliant. Just wonderful. Now, whether it was the case or not, she wouldn't be able to shake the idea that she was obligated to and a disappointment if she didn't. A Head Girl that refused to help younger students who the man thought "could learn from her" and her own housemates too. It was a double infraction if she refused...no matter how much she really didn't want to. Just when the initial anxiety over rule breaking was beginning to subside.
It had nothing to do with either girl, and on its own, Jessa found nothing wrong with helping. It was one of those things that made life a little easier.
But she hated partner work. Honestly. There were very few people she didn't mind partnering with, most of them gone now. One of them a go to for almost half her mandatory partner work. She didn't like it. It gave anxiety. As much as this decision now was. If she agreed....she'd have to work with them. If she refused, she'd spend the remainder of the lesson worrying the man, the girls and anyone else who'd been listening would find her selfish and rather unlike what a Head Girl was meant to be. The perceived judgement was enough to leave standing there, the fidgeting returned with a vengeance.
Of course she knew all along she wasn't Head Girl material but these little moments that crept up to remind her did awful things to her nerves that were, quite frankly, already bad.
She would have to agree. It was the only way to keep herself from further spiraling over something so seemingly inconsequential. Funny how it was usually the inconsequential things that set her off. Another spiral for another time. For now, she would really have to just go with it--except she'd been told that was something she was meant to be working on. Doing things just because it benefited others, regardless of her own wants. Circe, there really was no winning, was there?
You know what? She'd stew over disappointing herself and Dr. Harding later. He wasn't here, Professor Wayland was and she wasn't looking forward to any sort of look creeping on her face for her refusal to lend a helping hand. This was expected of her in the here and now--perhaps not from him but the badge demanded it and it would be a terrible look on her so after staring at the man like he'd been a kraken springing from the lake for several silent minutes, Jessa turned to the younger girls (Hanna and Kaitlyn).
"Mind if I join you two?"

Pretend to do stuff until class is over……?
He wasn’t entirely sure they’d be able to get away with that in this lesson though, and turned his attention to Wayland and tried to focus as the task was explained. He heard something about luring out bowtruckles and harvesting and wood lice and…. Basically, there was a lot to take in. Too much.
Hopefully Zoryn was paying attention and between the two of them they’d got everything. Hopefully.
“Here, you don’t wanna go losing an eyeball.” Although he secretly reckoned she’d probably look pretty cool with an eyepatch. Max offered her a pair of goggles from the supply box and then set about trying to clumsily get his own pair on over his glasses. “What do you wanna do? The luring bit or the harvesting bit?”
He was down for doing whatever bit was easier.

"Mind if I join you two?"
Kaitlynn nodded at Hanna. "Yeah...just a precaution." However, as Professor Noble explained what they were to be doing it made her slightly apprehensive. She had been right in her silent assumption. They were tasked with getting wood...or more wood lice. She watched as he demonstrated it very carefully and she felt her stomach curl into a knot just thinking about the sharp fingers poking her in general. Her mind started to drag off into the distance just a bit imagining the worst things possible that could happen.
It was a short lived thing though as an older student, the Head Girl of all people, walked over to the two of them. She looked at Hanna and shrugged. "I don't mind. It'd probably be easier with three of us." She grabbed herself a pair of goggles out of the box and slipped them on letting them form to her face then reached back into the box and picked up their container of wood lice.
Looking back and forth between the two girls she gave a small smile to each, "Who's going to feed and who wants to harvest?" Maybe since there was three of them they could get wood and wood lice? While the apprehension was still sitting on her chest about being poked she would do either task, but maybe it would be best for her to feed. She still wasn't the best at wand work and was working on fixing that.

He had been trying to think about how to get her and mooncalves together again, and had SOME ideas...though he would need a bit of time to execute anything properly. Time that, well, he wasn't sure he had unless Professor Wayland would let them both help with some nighttime assistance...that also surely meant that the Headmaster would have to write off on. So basically....doomed.
Though he wasn't thinking about that too much in the moment. He was more intent on focusing on her first attempt at a bowtruckle meeting, offering an appreciative chuckle as she spread her fingers. "The quiddity of a bowtruckle," he grinned with an approving nod just moments before Professor Wayland began speaking again to move things along.
And now Derf could hardly contain his excitement.
It was, well, obvious what would be the expected assigned roles...but Derf already knew how to lure a bowtruckle - different variety or not. So he was confident that he could accomplish this task easily, but he wasn't the only one here to learn and, well, for all his quiddities...this sixth year could pull back when it mattered to reveal a bit of a wiser version of himself. "Do you wanna try to lure the bowtruckle?" he asked while holding the box out to her.

Mhm, it was the Zoryn way!! Usually worked too, ngl. Had gotten away with literally doing nothing in Divinations this term. And if she could get past Fletcher, everyone else was easy. Just sayin'.
But her attention quickly turned to their Professor as began going over WAY too many instructions. She really only caught a good quarter of them, so she'd be banking on the fact that Max got it all. Great partnership they had going, right?
Zoryn thought so.
"Thanks," even if she did lose an eyeball, she could probably make it a #lewk. Just saying. Like a cool, hip Professional Quidditch playing pirate or something. "Hmmm... I'll lure," she nodded. "You look like the kinda guy who's really good with his wand." What? Zoryn Amari Spinnet was an ANGEL.
heh.
"Can I see the kit?" For the wood lice 'n all.

“Yeah?” Max cracked a proud, naive grin at her compliment. Because that had totally been a compliment, right? Maybe she’d observed his wand work in Charms or Transfiguration. “I mean…… I’m not normally one to brag or anything but I’d say my wand skills are definitely above average.”
Which meant he was completely okay with this arrangement. Harvesting, he could do that. As long as she aced her part of the job and kept those eyeball gouging twigs outta the way.
“Yeah, of course.” With a nod, Max offered the box of wood lice and fairy eggs to Zoryn. “That’s your department now. Hopefully they’re super hungry.”

Hogwarts RPG Name: Elizabeth "Lizzie" Marie Dowitcher
First Year
Chloe and Lizzie
As soon as the Professor motioned to move forward, Lizzie grabbed Chloe by the wrist and dragged her towards the line of trees.
"So do you want to harvest or try your hand at Bowtruckle taming?" she asked as they moved towards the forest. Secretly she wanted to get hands on with the Bowtruckle but she also knew she'd have many more opportunities to do so than her upper-year partner.
Picking what she thought was a good tree, it was older looking and a little knotted but strong, she stopped and looked up seeing if she could spot anything while Chloe decided.
Not in a mood to interact with someone new, the new Slytherin made his way to the incredibly red haired boy. "We are now partners, and you can't say no" he casually informed Lucas and settled down beside him.
This also meant no one could dare steal the boy away from him now.
They could try, but no.
Lucas was paying attention! And yeah, sounded like good advice, Prof. Lucas, for some reason, had thought Picketta had died O__O. He hadn't talked to Derf as much this term yet and for SOME reason he thought the little bowtruckle had moved on to the great beyond...perhaps because he hadn't seen her in awhile and just assumed? Well, Lucas knew what they said about ASSUMPTIONS. Hmph.
"Oh um--" And Zachary had claimed him. All right! "Cool. I'll go get our supplies then." He went to do that, grabbing a box that had aaaallll the things they would need for the bowtruckles. He came back and smiled cheerfully at his HOPEFULLY teammate. "So have you ever had to deal with a bowtruckle before, Zachary?" he asked curiously. Making small talk. Yep.

"Do you wanna try to lure the bowtruckle?" he asked while holding the box out to her.
You know, if all Natalie knew was that Derf had even TRIED to get her in to see the mooncalves, she'd be tickled pink and completely satisfied. So, there was that.
But now it was time to think about Bowtruckles, not mooncalves. Apparently bowtruckles were tricky little things to get approval from, so when the Professor mentioned that they needed to divide up who was going to lure and who was going to harvest, Natalie KNEW it was going to be her. If they wanted an A on their assignment, it would have been Derf, but Natalie KNEW Derf and knew that he would want her to this part for the learning experience. And to be honest, if it helped her figure out how to get on Picketta's good side, then it was worth it.
"I can try, yes," she said nervously, with emphasis on the TRY.
Reaching into the box, Natalie grabbed a bit of wood lice into her palm and glanced at Derf before looking towards the trees. Then she inched closer to one, her hand open with the wood lice in it, and stopped several inches away. Then she remembered the greeting that Derf had just taught her with that bit that looked like some tap dancing and clicking. She was too nervous to try mimicking that pattern again, afraid that she'd mess it up and do something offensive, so she just used her free hand to spreeeaad her fingers like Derf showed her, to prove that she was harmless.
"I brought you some wood lice," Natalie told the little tree creatures, slooooowly moving her palm forward, looking at a smaller bowtruckle on one of the closer branches. "You want some..??" Please? Was she doing this right???
"I'm Natasha." She said when Juniper returned with their box. "Maybe we are getting our own Bowtruckle to raise?" she said, doubting it, but hopeful. "They are supposed to be hard to see in the trees, so maybe we are split into pairs to try finding one?"
Juniper gave the younger girl a reassuring smile and nod once she returned with the box. Natasha, did she have a nickname for that? Nat? Tasha? "It's nice to meet you, Natasha." She would have to ask her later or just go ahead and give her a nickname. ”That would be really cool wouldn’t it?” Her friend Derf had one, Picketta and he had her forever. She didn’t know much about having one as pet but her friend seemed to enjoy having one.
The sixth year turned her attention back to Professor Wayland when he started to move the lesson forward. Listening to the instructions. She opened up the box as Wayland explained what was it there. First she put on her gloves, then she got one of the goggles out of the box and put them on. These were so nice! Very comfortable.
”I can do the luring.” She probably should being the older one and stuff. Plus she kind of wanted to try it. Watching the professor to see what to do and how exactly to lure a bowtruckle.

Chloe pretty much desperately wanted to be hands on with the bowtruckles, but the way her young partners eyes kept wandering toward the trees speculatively... well, it was obvious that Lizzie wanted the same thing. It was impossible for Chloe to claim something she knew someone else wanted.
"I'll do the harvesting. Go get us a bowtruckle." Chloe twirled her wand briefly before reaching into their box and extracting the wood lice. "I think I'll get us some wand wood, so make good friends with one so I don't lose an eye." She offered the wood lice and a pair of goggles to the younger girl.

Tried. Still trying. They truly were two sides of the same coin, right?
Smiling at her, he easily passed over the box of bowtruckle treats to the brunette. "I believe in you," he offered as encouragement. "You've put up with Picketta and her attitude." Even a few attacks and was still wanting to try so that said something about her tolerance for creatures, whether or not the Slytherin was willing to admit to it. "Just remember to look non-threatening. Kinda the most important bit in dealing with bowtruckles on a first go."
Which Natalie was doing WONDERFULLY from what he could see - since he was trying to keep his distance a bit so the bwotruckle only had one large mass to deal with at a time. Less threatening that way and its adorable little beady eyes could fix all its attention on her. Watching her, transfixed by her motions and gentle ambiance - though her nervousness did not escape him either - the Hufflepuff honestly forgot that he had a task to accomplish as well. Because...it was really beautiful to watch. She was beautiful and he hoped the bowtruckle could see and appreciate that. The tone in which she was speaking was pleasant as well and while he wanted to offer some advice, he refrained. His deeper tone would distract and be counterproductive to the potential bond forming.
So instead, he began to slowly sidestep his way to take the scene in in profile, holding his breath as the saucy little creature strut its way closer to her outstretched hand.

What Stretching Charms had he used when he was younger?
Lucas wanted to know.
So his name was Lucas. Easy enough to remember which helped since Théo didn't want to spend the rest of the lesson calling him you or kid or whatever. He was mostly bad with names. If he wanted to join him getting the supplies more power to him. You know now that he gave it some thought. He was pretty tall and at this point, he was so used to being taller than most here he barely gave it much thought like most things.
"The funny thing is i was incredibly short when i was a first year"
Really even Abra was taller than him every year until maybe like fourth. If he is remembering correcting. Théo grabbed a supply kit for both of them and guess they would just walk back.
Just in time to hear Wayman make his long speech. Way too much talking and Theo zoned out after he told them what was in the bag which he started opening and handed Lucas a pair of goggles since there was two. It was already sounding boring and looked to be nothing cool in this bag.
Bummer
He started listening again when he was talking about a Bowtruckle accepting him which would probably never happen and roles. Well guess that's why the partners.
"Which part you want to do?"

His encouragement was helpful, of course, since Derf knew what had to be done and because he knew Natalie so well. So, if Derf believed in her, then she believed that she could do it too. And it WAS true that she had "put up" with Picketta, but that wording made it sound like Natalie didn't like her, which wasn't true. Natalie liked Picketta because she was so protective and possessive of Derf. She was like his personal little guardian.
Look non-threatening. "Right," she replied, trying to look relaxed and.. pleasant. She kept her movements slow and watched the little creature look curiously into her palm. "It's okay," she said softly, her voice in a higher pitch than usual, like she was talking to a baby or a puppy, hoping that they would find it soothing.
At that point, she wasn't even paying attention to Derf anymore, because this was close as she had ever been to a Bowtruckle that wasn't out to slice her open with their sharp little fingers. In fact, it looked like it was okay with her. She watched it step closer to her fingers... and then reach down to grab some treats. Natalie beamed, but contained her excitement enough so she wouldn't startle the little creature.
"There you go. Is that yummy?" Wood lice... delicious snack, right? She caught Derf out of the corner of her eye and hoped that he was doing well, but she didn't want to look away just in case it made the bowtruckle.. worry. Or something.

As Abra came back with the box of supplies, Madison peeked in as well, noting everything that the professor had equipped them with. Yep, this was sure to be rather interesting. She was about to say as much when Professor Wayland started talking again, explaining what they needed to do.
Harvesting.
Of course. That was completely obvious now.
Everything that they needed to do sounded simple enough and Madison was sure that they would manage to harvest enough from the tree. Yep. They would have this in the bag. "So do you want to do the luring? Or the harvesting?" Really she had no preference either way.
