Default CoMC Lesson 1: Branches of Bowtruckles!

It was the day before Halloween, and the Fall weather was lovely this afternoon and absolutely perfect for their lesson today. All the new school rules aside, Professor Wayland was not going to break tradition. He had the lesson set up just outside of the Barn as usual, with his trusty blackboard and hay bale semi circle.

No hay bale throne today? Professor Wayland sat sipping his Chai on a single hay bale. The Professor was a little out of sorts, but he would press through for his students. And so he sat, sipping away with a quiet smile, impatiently awaiting his fantastic pupils to get there so this fun lesson could be started.

OOC: Welcome to the first CoMC Lesson of the term! Though this is our first lesson together, this is not the first CoMC lesson of the year, so please keep that in mind! Please make sure you take a gander at the CoMC Rules while waiting. Class will start in 24 hours. Class has started! Please, jump in and pretend you were there the whole time! But remember if you have your charrie show up late there will be IC consequences!

Rylee sat up just a little bit straighter on her hay bale this morning as the lesson began. Her eyes shifting momentarily to the side as the small group of trees was shown. So they would be learning about something that lived in trees.

Right away her hand went into the air to give her answer, "Chipmunks live in trees." They were really adorable creatures too and really little. Letting her hand drop down onto her lap once more she waited for the lesson to continue.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

Zachary had no clue about trees.

And the most obvious answers were already taken too.

So he opted to stay quiet, until thinking about trees led him to a memory from some summer, "y'know professor, sometimes people end up living in trees too" Awesome Magical Treehouses were a thing.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Kaitlynn sat the and thought and thought and thought.... and while she thought answers were already being tossed out. Animals, magical and non-magical that live in trees. She didn't want to repeat a given answer. All sorts of mammals and reptiles. Creatures with wings....

"Fairies live in trees, Professor." She was fairly certain they did anyway, after all...they fly.

Leading the rebellion? He had NO idea. She nodded in response to the question Professor Wayland asked, realizing it was probably meant to be a joke. But this was no joke. She was leading a rebellion. As soon as all the puzzle pieces fit together just right.

It wasn’t the two of them for much longer though because Abra came rolling in soon enough. She didn’t mind because she liked him. He was a good one and she’d allow him to sit next to her. Not everyone got that kind of privilege. Hearing a new voice draw near, she looked up to see yet another friend-(ish) (emphasis on the ISH) person. “Thanks, Lucas,” Zoryn sent the boy a smile and flipped her hair. Her’s DID look nice. Everything Zoryn wore looked nice. It was her trademark. She also noticed that he sat only somewhat near which amused her to no end. Because either he was afraid of her or he was afraid of what she’d do if he stole Faith’s seat. That’s what Zoryn figured, anyway.

As more and more people started to show up, her sparkly TROLL display gained some looks. Some of approval, others not so much. But you know what they say, right? Any press is good press. And Zoryn LOVED the press. Especially Witch Weekly. That counted as press, right?

”Hiya Nat,” she winked at the Slytherin before turning her attention to this weird Hufflepuff she didn’t know. ”Did it myself. Incredible, I know, right?” Even people she didn’t know were noticing. She was THRIVING in the attention not gonna lie. “Thanks Beth,” Zoryn KNEW she was owning it, but it was nice to hear it from others too. She waved at Juni before taking note of the weird costume some tiny kid was wearing. And before she knew it, class was starting.

As for the question on trees and things, Zoryn chose to sit this one out. She questions that didn’t refer to straight fact recall.

Yeah, Zoryn, you had it right. Lucas did NOT want to take the seat that he knew inherently belonged to Faith just by its being next to YOU.

He snorted at Zachary's answer and chuckled. A lot. It was FUNNY. He was right! Sometimes people DID live in trees. Like Tarzan. "Professor," he raised his hand. "I read somewhere there are certain types of...kangaroos? that like to live in trees. They go on the ground for food and stuff, but this tree-kangaroo prefers to be all up in the air." He smiled a bit.

Oooooh, whoever had just said FAIRIES - that was a GOOD ONE. Lucas wished HE had thought of that.

Septimus was settling in with parchment and quill just as Professor Wayland decided to open up the class from his simplified perch. Oooo their lesson was going to deal with creatures in trees. The Ravenclaw tried to think of his magical options, though other than the rather obvious bowtruckle answer already given, he was coming up dry. He was better with the more muggle creatures though even several of them had been given up by the time he was ready to speak up. Thankfully one was still not taken.

“Most wild owls live in trees…” When they weren’t homed owls and live in house and cages and owleries. Or when they had other habitats like burrowing owls and such.

By the time the last student had arrived, the scowl was gone, and Jó was looking everywhere impatiently for some sign of what creature might be scared of his mask. Wimp creatures, most probably - but even so, he was curious. He perked up a little as Professor Wayland started the lesson, his hand hovering in the air whilst he craned his neck to see if he could see anything in the trees.

"Monkeys, sir!" There were LOADS of monkeys lived in trees, like Spider Monkeys and.... Were orangutan's monkeys? What was the difference between monkeys and apes? Was that what they were going to learn about?!?!
Noting Józef's attitude for having to take off the mask, Tristan was surprised at how excited he was to offer up an answer for the question he had asked. With a chuckle, he replied, "Yes, Józef there are many different types of Monkeys that live in trees." He turned with a grin to the next hand.

"Very good, Lucas, and no you can't really keep any magical creature in front of Muggles, unless it looks like a non-magical creature." Tristan said with a nod and an encouraging smile.

Raising her hand, and going with the broadest kind of animal, Hanna said "Birds. Owls!" Hanna loved owls. They lived in trees, right?
"Yes, very good, Hanna." Tristan said with a smile and a wink. Birds seemed to be the popular answer today but that was alright. It was to be expected.

Quickly, he turned to Beth and eyed her, a mischievous smile on his face. “Hey. Hey Beth. What do sloths throw when it snows?”, a little chuckle escaping as he poked her playfully. Not giving her time to answer, “SLOWBALLS!!!”,he shouted, his laugh echoing off into the distance.

“Ooops. Sorry Professor”.
"Very good, Ewan. Sloths are the coolest." He said with a wink and a grin. He was about to turn to the next hand in the air when he was interrupted by a very loud yell from the young man.

He turned back, raising an eyebrow. "I hate to interrupt your joke telling with my lesson, Mr. Jones, but I would appreciate it if you would pay attention. Two points from Ravenclaw." Tristan hated taking points, but he also didn't appreciate yelling out random words in the middle of his lessons. He quickly turned back to the next hand in the air.

Tristan could always count on Derf to have an interesting and detailed answer. He was glad he controlled himself and only gave one answer and grinned when he added to Stella's. He smiled, a Magizoologist in the making, "Very good, Derf. Chameleon's are super cool and definitely do live in trees. Thank you for expanding on Stella's answer." Thunderbirds were a type of bird, a magical bird at that, and if the Thunderbird was small or the tree were large like the Redwoods in California or the forests in British Columbia it could be possible.
Tristan didn't want to outright say no to that answer. Lizzie seemed kinda nervous about it. "Maybe, but very doubtful. Thunderbirds are native to Arizona which is mostly desert and they are far to big to live in a tree, unless of course they lived in Redwoods. But good thoughts." He said with a reassuring smile.

Something she'd seen often enough when she was younger but hadn't seen at all since the move back to England. "Possums like to sleep hanging by their tails from tree limbs." True story. And they could be mean little creatures, too.
"Correct, Archer, but Opossums can live just about anywhere, trees being one of the places." Tristan said with an encouraging smile before turning to the next hand in the air.

He took a small breath and told himself to focus on the lesson and not on what could potentially happen and that this was Professor Wayland's class. They had him for several years now.

....wait...what?...why were people giving answers?! Had he missed a question?! Dorian blinked, looking around at the others and instantly felt guilty. This whole time he had been silently criticizing the others when in reality he hadn't been paying attention himself. The fourth year grabbed his notebook instead to make small notes to show that he was doing...something.
Tristan looked over Dorian who seemed to be very confused about what was happening at the moment. He raised an eyebrow at the young man before turning to the next hand in the air. Hopefully he would get an idea of what they were talking about with the next step in the lesson.

Another Owl answer. Alright then. "Yes, very good, Septimus, thank you." Tristan said with a smile and a nod. There were no more hands in the air at this point and he was glad to be moving on.

"All great answers, everyone." Tristan said standing in front of the class with a grin. "And only one of you mentioned the creature we will be working with today." He pulled a handful of what looked like rice out of his jeans pocket, and from the pocket in his shirt a little green, stick like, leafy head popped out.

The little Bowtruckle climbed it's way out of Tristan's pocket and down is arm to stand on his palm and nibble on the dried wood lice in his hand. "Today our creature is the Bowtruckle. My friend here's name is Dahlia. She has lived in the barns here at Hogwarts all her life." As the little creature finished the last wood lice she climbed up to Tristan's shoulder, and rubbed her little face against his cheek. Chuckling, he said, "And she has a bit of a crush on me." He grinned pulling a fairy egg from his pocket and giving it to her.

He was pretty sure that no one had noticed the little eyes staring at them from the trees, but that wouldn't last long. They were being very obvious about it. "Now before we get on to the activity, give me one fact about Bowtruckles. It can be about what they eat, where they come from, what they look like, etcetera. But please, only one so everyone gets a chance." He said with a grin, as Dahlia had started to rub his face again.

BOWTRUCKLES!! Penny couldn't help but grin wider as the professor spoke and then his little friend came out to peek. OH MERLIN SHE WAS ADORABLE! It was all the Hufflepuff could do to stay seated as she raised her hand high and waved it a bit. "Bowtruckles eat woodlice, sir!" she chirped. And they were almost as cute as Benji Park! Hehe.

Oh. OH. That was him. He'd mentioned bowtruckles!

Abra perked up when Professor Wayland told them all what they would be studying that day; more than anything he was surprised that his answer had been so... right. Not that he thought it was wrong, because he'd known bowtruckles for sure lived in trees, but... well... yeah. He watched the bowtruckle - Dahlia - in Wayland's hand for a minute, and when the question was posed, Abra raised his hand again.

"They guard trees that you get wand wood from...?" he said simply, and though he phrased his answer as a question, he said it with a touch more confidence this time. It helped, you know, getting things right in class and getting positive reactions from professors. Helped him relax just a bit.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Well....at least she got a yes before the no. Still...fairies.

Bowtruckles!! They were cute and the one that Professor Wayland had on his shoulder was just too adorable. Dahlia. They could be dangerous though...

Kaitlynn put her hand in the air, "They are small in height growing only up to eight inches max."

Ahhhh Penny was SO SMART. Benji looked over at her as she answered the question, barely hiding a smile. He quickly turned his attention back to the professor before he got caught with googly eyes and raised his own hand: "A group of Bowtruckles is called a branch," he offered.

And they were so adorable. (Not that he would ever call them adorable. 13-year-old boys are waaaaay too cool to call things adorable. But he would think it!) He knew they could be a little aggressive if they felt threatened, but he hoped he'd get to hold a friendly one today!

‘you can't really keep any magical creature in front of Muggles, unless it looks like a non-magical creature.’

That was going in his notes, that was. What was so great about going to St. Woboldo’s was that he knew all about not doing magic in front of Muggles but it was still such an important point that it had to be in the notes. And because this was about creatures specifically and not magic in general. He even drew a great big - and slightly wonky - square around it to highlight it. There.

And speaking of creatures, it looked like they were learning about Bowtruckles today.

Lucas glanced over at Stella and gave her a grin. She had her answer, yeah? They knew what the lesson was going to be about and it didn’t look like it was going to be dangerous, either. Though, if Wayland has brought out something like winged horses or centaurs or dragons, he would’ve been equally happy.

But they were concentrating on Bowtruckles so, after a moment of thinking, he raised his hand up in the-

Nope. Answer taken.

His hand went down very slowly as he tried to re-think....... and then it went up again. "Bowtruckles have two very sharp fingers on each hand." Their version of fingers and hands because they didn’t look like human fingers and hands. That would be freaky and something out of a scary movie.

Oh, BOWTRUCKLES. Like Derf's Picketta, only lots of them who weren't already disinclined to hate everyone but Derf. Although they probably just hated everyone but the professor, so still hateful but beautiful little beasts.

"They camouflage well in their home trees, because they look like flora... but they are most definitely creatures. And, also opinion not fact, but they're very very charming." Not biased at all by the fact that she'd been able to amuse one recently with a dancing flower.

Aaron was choosing to believe this was a more playful reprimand, given he'd earned another wink. He grinned widely in response, shrugging it off. Adults made up words all the time to suit their needs. There was always room for more words, right?

.... This was going to be redundant, but as stated earlier, magical creatures weren't in his wheelhouse. He took no interest in these things, not as an insult, but... he just had other interests. Like Runes. And changing objects from one thing to something entirely new with Transfiguration... And Divination. Creatures made him anxious for some unknown reason.

"Sir.... they're green." He nodded in partnership with his response. Hey, don't fuss at him. He didn't know the first thing about Bowtruckles and a 'captain obvious' answer was all he had to offer at the moment.

Taking notes she wrote down what Professor Wayland told Lucas, she actually been taking notes the whole lesson really. She loved creatures magical or non magical, maybe she could be a animal healer or so who knows. She was sure this was going to be one of her strongest subjects, she just loved animals!

Seeing the Bowtruckles she almost squealed cause it was so cute! She read about them, but she never really seen one until now! They were cuter in person then in the pictures!

Lucas looked and seen Lucas grinning at her as she smiled warmly back at him standing beside him. She was excited for this lesson, it was going to be a great lesson she could feel it was! Professor Wayland was already cool in her book for letting them dress casually.

Stella raised her hand, dear god was she a Ravenclaw or a Gryffindor? She chuckled at herself. "Bowtruckles protect Wiggentrees." she remembered reading about that in her book.

Skyler rolled her eyes at the hessitent look. What? She mentioned creatures in the trees. What more did you want? Eh. Skyler shrugged. She blinked and looked around at all the eyes staring at them? Were they in the trees?

Lizzie's heart plummeted into her stomach. Her first answer and she'd embarrassed herself giving a foolish answer, now that her brain had returned to more rational thoughts. Tears began to well slightly in the corners of her eyes, her only goal today was making the Professor see her passion for Care of Magical Creatures, and she was doing a 'great' job.

The Professor moved on, revealing a small green creature from his pocket. Lizzie blinked away her tears, she'd seen this same creature once before, in the Hufflepuff Common room, Picketta the Bowtruckle, Derf's friend.

The Professor wanted a fact about Bowtruckles. She'd read Fantastic Beast back to front at least 100 times, she rifled through passages in her head until the perfect fact popped into her mind.

"The Bowtruckle has a Ministry of Magic Classification of XX, which means they are believed to be Harmless and may be domesticated as a pet or companion. It's one reason why the great Newt Scamander had one as a travelling companion." she stated, still slightly hesitant in her answer after the last flumux.

Madison beamed. Even though koalas weren't magical creatures, they were cute and she really liked them. Sometimes she wished that she could have a pet koala, but she knew that it wasn't possible... Well, whatever. It was what it was.

Bowtruckles? Huh. Interesting that she hadn't guessed that they would be dealing with those today. Then again, she rarely gave them a second thought. She DID know some things about them, however. She raised her hand. "They can be found in certain forests in England, Germany, and Scandinavia." At least that was what she thought she had read somewhere once...

Ooooh that was the sweetest looking Bowtruckle Beth had ever seen. The little green insect made Beth grin as she watched it climb down to Professor Wayland’s palm to eat the dried woodlice.

Okay…okay, where there was one Bowtruckle there were many right? Her eyes flicked to the trees around tried to catch a glimpse of one if she could…no, no she needed to answer the question and participate. Raising her hand Beth waited to be called on, ”Bowtruckles can be mistaken for members of the Phasmatodea order of insects typically because of looks it’s the Leptynia Hispanica – they had an exhibit on insects at the museum this summer” she added the last bit like it was an important explanation.

It wasn’t, she simply liked science and learning…it wasn't that she was an animal person or anything. No, clearly that roll fell to friend-Daniel...and Cal...they wanted to work with creatures.

BOWTRUCKLES???? Natalie knew what they were, thanks to Derf. And she even liked his little bowtruckle, even if she didn't like her.

"Derf loves Bowtruckles!" Natalie added to the discussion with a chipper attitude... And then she turned red because it was uh, rather unnecessary to add. The sentence had just sort of jumped out of her when she heard the topic of the lesson. Oops. Natalie cleared her throat. "And they, err... eat insects," she added a second later to save her outburst.

And then she tried her best to NOT look at Derf.

Natasha didn't know much about Bowtruckles, but tried to remember what she had read. Her classmates seemed to have covered everything she knew about them and much more. Then a little fact came to mind and she hoped she was remembering correctly as she raised her hand. "I think I read they only have brown eyes to help with camouflage."

It wasn’t that Stasya wasn’t aware of creatures that lived in trees. She had one as basically her familiar, as most everyone who had been anywhere around her knew. One creature that had been mentioned already, but either way, she’d stayed quiet because she’d gotten distracted. By Professor Wayland’s response to Chloe, about there being sick creatures in the barn. Which she hadn’t known, probably because of all the stupid rules that had recently been set, including the one that restricted their presence in the grounds unless they had a professor escort. She’d thought about testing that one, but hadn’t yet mostly because of her worry over the prefect notebook keeping track of her location at all times or spying on her in some other way. Either way, it was quickly becoming much too much stress for the sixteen year old, and she didn’t have Professor Hirsch to tell her things would all be okay anymore. Not with the other restriction on the contents of their mail.

She’d perked up at the mention of what they’d actually be studying in the lesson, though, and almost instinctively glanced in Derf’s direction. “Bowtruckles have their own language, too, and they can act just like people do. Creating cliques and bullying other bowtruckles if they feel like it,” she added, raising her hand just in case she actually was being watched. She was tempted to bring up her experiment regarding making wood lice cookies for Picketta, too, but it seemed like more of a tangent than anything constructive.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

Despite the professor's confusion, Zachary really didn't want to get into the history of his mom's neighbour's wife kicking him out and how the bloke ended up living in his kid's tree house for six months.

So, never mind and moving on.

Bowtruckles!

He had definitely read about them, so his hand went up and he offered a fact he clearly remembered, "....they can get quiet violent when threatened"

Hanna let out an audible gasp, then clapped her hand over her mouth, sinking back into her hay bale. Oops. But... BOWTRUCKLES! Hanna had never, at least not that she knew, met and handled a bowtruckle. Until NOW that was!

It was so sweet! Looking at it popping its head out of Professor Wayland's pocket. Aww. LOL, well Dahlia wasn't the only one that had a crush on Professor Wayland. He was very handsome. Ugh. Red cheeks. Hanna blew a breath out of her mouth to re-focus herself on the subject. Professor Wayland. No, bowtruckles! Bowtruckles. Bowtruckles.

Each time Hanna thought of a new fact, someone else spoke it. But there were still things that were said that she didn't know about them, which was interesting. Hmm... Hanna raised her hand slowly. "Er... they're similar to the mundane creature Praying Mantis. Are they... related somehow?" Although... although Praying Mantis' were insects. "Do Bowtruckles eat them, Sir?"
