Default Charms Lesson 1: Healing Spells

Today's charms lesson takes place on a chilly Tuesday morning in December. Normally at this time of year, Professor Marchand would have his classroom decorated with paper snowflakes and festive cookies and hot cocoa for the students, but today, the walls and refreshment table at the back of the room are dull and empty, much like the professor's eyes. As you walk in, you'll find the desks arranged into four long rows. On top of each desk lies a dummy with realistic-looking cuts, some deeper than others, and broken bones. Perhaps they provide a clue to the lesson's subject?

A gaunt, sad-looking Professor Marchand stands in his usual place at the front of the room dressed entirely in black, with the exception of his blazing red tie. A steady patter of freezing rain beats against the windows, and a quick glance outside will reveal a sky as dark as the professor's attire. Luckily, Professor Marchand has kept the room warm with plenty of heating charms.

Behind Professor Marchand, the following message is written on the blackboard: Please DO NOT touch the dummies. Class will start shortly, so please take a seat anywhere and kindly keep the chatter to a minimum.

OOC: Welcome to the first OOC lesson of this term! Please make sure you're up to date on Professor Marchand's rules as well as the school rules. Class will start in ABOUT 24 HOURS (2:30 AM EDT Oct. 5) HAS STARTED!.

Slate took a long look at his dummy figuring out the best place to start. Might as well just start from the toes and work his way up, right? That seemed simple enough.

He started with a cut on the foot. He moves his wand in a downward diagonal line and clearly said "Eh-PIS-kee." He watched as the cut healed itself and grinned. Cool. That would be useful if... he were accident prone. Which he wasn't.

He next came across a broken arm. He tapped the arm of the dummy, lightly, even though lightly still looked like it hurt immensely. "Fer-ROOL-lah." he cast. Bandages snaked their way onto the arm of the dummy.

Next up was a broken nose. Down diagonal and a "Episkey." later, the Slytherin made a face as the bone shifted itself back into place. This... was really unpleasant to watch.

So they weredoing some bandaging.

Lucas bit his lip as he looked at the dummy in front of him. This wasn’t good. This wasn’t good at all! He couldn’t even bandage a proper arm with his own hands, how was he going to do any better with MAGIC?! It was all a little complicated and overwhelming and he couldn’t help but feel as though he was setting himself up for disaster.

Yeah. That’s what this was going to be. A disaster.

He looked around him and it didn’t make him feel better to see that people were already getting started and they looked like they knew what they were doing. Look at the Head Girl, for example. She was a pro! He just watched her work, silently wondering if they had to make their dummies move as well to, uh, make this more realistic? But, then again, he was sure that would only make him feel worse. What if it screamed at him?!

Looking back at his dummy, the boy frowned as he took out his wand. It was...... now or never, yeah? "Episkey. Eh-PIS-kee. Eh-PIS-kee? Eh-PIS-kee!" The chant continued for longer than he probably should’ve but, finally, he directed his wand at....... uh........ oh! This cut right here. This cut on the dummy’s arm. Yeah, that’ll do. "Episkey!" He moved his wand in a downwards diagonal motion but.......

......... nothing.

"Episkey!" Still nothing. "Oh, come on! EPISKEY!" No.

Well. That was..... upsetting.

The frown stayed on his face as he tried to look veeeery closely to see if any part of it had healed up - to, well, make him feel better - but...... no. Nothing. Maybe he should...... try something else? Another section? Yeah. He looked over the arm, and then at the chest and then at- oh! Oh hey! This one right here. On the dummy’s cheek. This one looked small enough, didn’t it? Much smaller than before. Like a kitty scratch.

"Episkey!"

The smile was instant. It was the smallest of cuts but now he was watching it heal itself up until the skin looked as good as new. He even touched it gingerly, just to make sure, and the skin didn’t feel bumpy or scratchy. It felt smooth and...... a little plastic-y, which is what made him let go again.

Yeah. Moving on.

The next spell was probably the one he was dreading the most. Because bandages. Ferula, was it? "Ferula. Fer-ROOL-lah? Fer-ROOL-lah! Fer-ROOOOOO......" It was a long chant. He had to get this right, after all, even if both spells were very advanced and didn’t look like they should ever be performed by a first year in a dangerous situation, let alone someone like him. But he was going to get it right. Or try.

Picking the arm he was working on before, Lucas gave it a slight tap with his wand and said, "Ferula!" ....... No? "Ferula!" No. He paused to give his wand a little shake before trying again, "C’mon, Ferula!"

..........

Uh........ so there was a bandage. Which was..... great. Really. The dummy had a bandage around its arm so it was saved, right? But the sight of the bandage made Lucas squirm a bit more because, well, it looked like a mess. It was...... bad. Messy. He wasn’t even sure if it could hold the arm together properly and it looked like the bandage had given up trying halfway through.

Not really knowing how to fix this, the first year placed his wand between his teeth and started tying a bow on the bandage. It..... wasn’t going to help but hey, at least it’ll LOOK a little better, right?

Default Question 2
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Gaston felt awful for not excusing Skyler! Merlin knows he didn’t want to; the sad look in his eyes reflected that. He could only hope she would understand he was saying no to protect her. The last thing she needed right now was a surprise encounter with the fearsome four (aka Scrimgeour and his minions)! He was prepared for an argument to follow, but thankfully, that didn’t happen. He breathed a silent sigh of relief; he didn't want to have to punish her (or anyone else) for what would've been completely justifiable anger! He returned her nod, giving her a small encouraging smile, but his expression turned to surprise when she said she was okay. He hadn’t expected to recover that fast… not that he wasn’t pleased, of course! Still, he kept close watch on her as she went about her work. The successful Episkey earned her a beam. “Great job, MIss Queen!” he said, and his voice dropped as he added, “I’m so proud of you for persevering!”

Gaston was so busy with Skyler that it took him longer than usual to notice Lucas struggling with the spells. He crossed the room to the boy’s side, but by the time he got there, he’d already performed the spells… well, kind of. That bandage looked a bit untidy, but that was fairly normal for a first try. He smiled. “Well done, Mr. Dakest! he said. “Don’t worry about the bandage; it’ll get tidier the more you practice. What matters is that you got it to appear and more importantly, you didn’t give up.”

After a few minutes had passed, the professor checked his watch again. Wow, was that the time?! They had to be moving on. He turned around, sparing Slate a glance as he made his way back to the front of the room. “Excellent, Mr. Ryker,” he said, giving the Slytherin an approving nod as he passed.

Resuming his normal place at the front of the room, Gaston addressed the class, “Time is up! If you haven’t finished, you’ll have a chance to catch up later, but we have another spell to learn first…” He gave the students a moment or two to refocus their attention on him before continuing, “There’s a reason I asked you to leave the deep gashes alone; this is because the spell we’ll use to treat them is much more difficult than the two we’ve practiced so far. That spell is…”

With a wave of his wand, the writing on the blackboard vanished, all except the spell at the top of the list made earlier. “Vulnera Sanentur. As Daisy said earlier, this spell is used to treat large wounds. It was invented by Severus Snape, though it didn’t become widely used for until many years after its invention. This spell is the only known countercurse to Sectumsempra…” As he talked, the following words appeared on the backboard behind him:

Quote:
Vulnera Sanentur - heals large wounds

Invented by Severus Snape
Only countercurse to Sectumsempra
Its effects are threefold. Who can name one of them?” Gaston finished, looking out at the class for hands to go in the air.

OOC: You have ABOUT 24 HOURS (2:30 AM EDT Oct. 11) to answer the question. Please state only ONE effect of Vulnera Sanentur to give others a chance to answer.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

As Professor Marchand began to mention Vulnera Sanentur, Daisy began to have little flashbacks to her time in St Mungo's yet again, much to her distress. She gave her head a quick shake to erase the image from her mind. Her hand quickly shot up in the air and when she was allowed to, Daisy answered with, "It helps to prevent death via severe loss of blood."

Hanna thought about the mass effect of healing a very deep gash, and raised her hand. "It... it closes the wounds?"

Jackson was not yet frustrated, as he knew he was not a Healer, but man oh man he was getting close. He had been trying to fix the broken jaw for a long enough time that Professor Marchand had come over and began helping him. He was definitely grateful, but he hoped that his frustration wasn’t taken as rudeness. He tried to imitate the angle, and he was relieved to see that it had finally worked! Alfred was looking so much better. Jackson had to admit to himself that he would have been disappointed if he hadn’t managed to keep up with the class’ progression, but luckily he was doing alright. It was time learn more about the more complicated spell, and Jackson relocated the three gashes that Alfred had. The sight of blood didn’t make him queasy or anything, but the gash itself… the layers of flesh and whatever else visible… Yea, that made him hesitate a little bit.

When the question was posed, Jackson raised his hand. “Sir, I believe it slows down blood loss, right? I don’t think it can reverse the issue though, right?” That would be beneficial but that seemed extreme even for magic. That would be cool if he was proven wrong though.

Sectumsempra. A spell that Natalie wished from the DEPTHS of her soul that she would never be attacked with. Not that she really had any reason to fear it. She didn't have any enemies (that she knew of) and didn't know why anyone would actually use it against her, but... still. She still hoped her life would never come to that.

It was good to know the counter curse, though it almost seemed like it was a topic for defense against the dark arts. Maybe this was a "charms to fix you after the dark arts" lesson.

The counter curse, Vulnera Sanentur. Natalie had obviously never had the need to use it before, but she did know a bit about it. Well, at least she thought she knew. She raised her hand. "Sir, I think it returns the blood back to the body. Doesn't it?" Maybe? Like, it healed the wound, but didn't it put the blood back first so that they person didn't die of blood loss?

Stella shivered slightly, she never wanted to get hit by that horrible curse, it didn't sound good or pretty. But she was an first year, there was no way she could do spell that strong. She barely knew how to do the cleaning spell properly! She bit her lip thinking of the question, she knew something about it deon reading.

Raising her hand she bit her lip. " Prfoessor doesn't it clear residue and begin to heal the wound?" she asked not sure. She thought she read that somewhere in her books, although she could be wrong. She had to answer right? If she didn't she'll get into trouble and she didn't want that

At the time that the professor was walking by she looked up when he stopped and spoke to her as he always did when they were working on things. She looked up and smiled, ”Thanks Professor.” Beaming at the professor. She was quite proud of herself, not that she would ever show this. She simply smiled and turned back to her work.

When she had finished she waited for the lesson to continue. Listening to the professor talk. Vulnera Sanentur. She knew the answer, but many had already said the three effects. So Juni just kept her eyes on the front of the room. While the others answered. No sense in repeating one of three answers.

The Hufflepuff's eyes positively lit up at the prospect of having his OWN dummy to practice on. Though what made him squirm a little was that the offer had been made somewhat in secret. It was triggering in a 'this isn't really allowed but I'm going to do it anyway' kind of way. But, then again, others had received much MORE special treatment in their own academic pursuits. He wasn't asking for an entire lab to practice necromancy, for example. "Really...that would be okay?!" he asked, his tone high pitch and nervous but very very excited.

Administering a few more necessary charms to his and Chloe's dummy, Derf glanced up as the professor moved things along just a little toooooooooooooooo ... Vulnera Sanentur. Another spell Derf was quite familiar with, the healer had performed it several times on him at the end of last term, and the three parts easily came to mind: that is slowed blood flow, cleaned the wound of residue, and knitted it. Though he did not lift his hand to answer as several of his classmates had already touched upon all of these. Though he was tempted to point out to Skyler that the answer to her question was written quite clearly on the board.

Instead, as he tended to do when he had nothing to contribute to the answer, he asked a question. "Professor? In terms of...the relation to blood flow of a wound...what is the relation of Vulnera Sanentur to say...Tergeo?" Which was also classified as a healing spell.

Gaston was not at all surprised when once again, Daisy’s hand was the first he saw in the air. What did surprise him, however, was the shake of her head. He shot her a quick apologetic look as a fresh pang of guilt gripped his heart. If only he’d been faster that night… maybe this wouldn’t be such a bad reminder for her! He blinked, trying to force the sudden onslaught of emotion down. “Yes! Excellent, Miss Swann,” he replied with an approving nod.

No matter what else was going on with him, it always lifted his spirits to know he’d made a student smile… and smiles were becoming rarer each day under Scrimgeour’s soul=crushing regime. It was only a matter of time before he turned everyone into heartless robots like himself! With a quiet sigh, Gaston refocused his thoughts, just in time to see Hannah’s hand go up. He called on her, nodding in reply to her answer. “Very good, Miss Newton!” he said.

Well, this was interesting! It seemed that Jackson and Natalie had opposite thoughts on whether or not Vulnera Sanentur replenished lost blood. He gave each of them a nod in response to their answers, though he decided to address both of them at once so as not to go back over the same information. “That’s correct, Mr. Thomas,” he said. “While Vulnera Sanentur slows blood flow, it cannot replace the lost blood.”

He turned to Natalie with an encouraging smile. “Still, I’m glad you brought this up, Miss McKinley,” he said. “Although the spell itself doesn’t reverse the blood loss, there’s another way to do it. After using Vulnera Sanentur, the patient should be given a blood replenishing potion.”

Gaston kept an eye on Skyler for the rest of the activity, just in case she started to feel sick again. The sigh caught him a bit off guard. He never gave punishments lightly, only when there was absolutely no way around it. Didn’t she know that? As his eyes scanned the room for hands in the air, he saw Skyler’s and called on her. She hadn’t exactly provided an answer to the question he asked, but still she raised a good point. He nodded, both in approval and reply to her question. “Yes, Miss Queen,” he said. “Severus Snape invented both spells when he was still a student here at Hogwarts.”

So far, the students had named two effects of Vulnera Sanentur, but Gaston was still waiting to hear the third. He saw Stella’s hand go up, and… finally somebody said it! He made sure to give her an extra encouraging beam, especially when he noticed the lip biting. Unlike some of his colleagues, he wouldn’t berate a student for not having an answer, but he was especially glad that she did. “Yes, it most certainly does! Very good, Miss Starson,” he said.

When she had finished she waited for the lesson to continue. Listening to the professor talk. Vulnera Sanentur. She knew the answer, but many had already said the three effects. So Juni just kept her eyes on the front of the room. While the others answered. No sense in repeating one of three answers.

Gaston beamed, nodding in reply to Juni’s thanks. “No thanks necessary, Miss Primeaux,” he said. “You certainly have a talent for healing.” Quite a few of the students did, he’d noticed. He was a little surprised when the Ravenclaw captain didn’t offer an answer to the question, but he reasoned it was because the correct answers had already been said. He gave her a quick look of acknowledgement before moving on.

Seeing Derf’s eyes light up at the offer of a creature dummy made Gaston smile more than anything that had happened in class so far today. A dummy was different from a toy, so there was no rule saying Derf couldn’t have one… at least not yet, though he wouldn’t put it past Scrimgeour to come up with one. He’d offered in (sort of) secret so the other students wouldn’t overhear and get jealous. He nodded. “I don’t see why it wouldn’t be, since it’s for educational uses,” he whispered. “Come to my office later, and bring your bag with you.”

As the class moved on to the next question, he saw Derf’s hand go up… and the prefect answered his question with another question. It looked like he’d be used to that after teaching this boy for nearly six years. Gaston considered the question for a moment. His mind was formulating an answer, but first, he wanted to double-check that it was the answer Derf was looking for. “Could you elaborate please, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne?” he said. “Were you referring to the similarities and differences of the spells? Or if one is better to use for blood than the other? Or something else?”

When the answers stopped coming, Gaston addressed the class once more, “Excellent job, everybody! You’ve correctly named all the effects of Vulnera Sanentur…” He waved his wand, and the following words appeared under the information already on the board:

Quote:
Vulnera Sanentur - heals large wounds

Invented by Severus Snape
Only countercurse to Sectumsempra

Effects:
Slows blood flow (does not replace lost blood - use blood replenishing potion)
Cleans residue
Closes wounds
He gave the students a few moments to process the information before continuing, “Because the effects are threefold, you must say the spell three times for maximum effect. If you’re doing it right, it should sound almost like a song. To cast, you may either trace the wounds with your wand or poke them - though I don’t advise doing the latter!”

Gaston moved to the nearest dummy, wand drawn. He traced his wand over a deep gash in the dummy’s chest and repeated, “Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur…” Gradually, the “blood” vanished, and the wound closed itself. Resuming his place at the front of the room, he went on, “Please note that in a real life situation, you must give the patient dittany immediately after casting the spell to avoid scarring.” His expression darkened as his mind wandered back to the night of the Inferi attack for what seemed like the hundredth time this class… how he’d healed his own injuries but insisted Penelope give her supplies of dittany to the injured students. Merlin, he hoped the students would have enough common sense not to ask him if that’s why he still had scars across half his face.

He sighed, shaking his head to kill the memories, before looking out at the students. “You have the rest of class time to practice using Vulnera Sanentur on your dummies. Keep in mind that this is a very difficult spell to master, so don’t be disappointed if you don’t get it right on the first few tries; the important thing is that you keep trying!”

OOC: We've reached the mini activity! As Gaston said, all you have to do is practice Vulnera Sanentur on the dummies. You can work alone or in groups, but everybody must attempt the spell to get full credit. If you need help or have questions, please indicate in the title of your post. Gaston and I will be checking back in periodically to answer. You have UNTIL 2:30 AM EDT Oct. 14 to do the mini activity.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy retrieved her quill, ink and parchment and began to write down some notes, considering how advanced this spell was.

Daisy focused on the pronunciation only. "VUL-neh-rah Sah-NEN-tour, VUL-neh-rah Sah-NEN-tour, Vulnera Sanentur," she said clearly under her breath, ensuring that each part of the incantation had been said properly. After a few moments, Daisy was ready to perform the activity.

Picking up her wand, Daisy located a large, deep gash located on the dummy's abdomen. She took in a breath and traced the wound with her wand as she said in a sing-song like voice, "Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur."

Nothing. Daisy aimed her wand closer towards the wound and repeated the wand movement and said, "Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur," just like her previous attempt. Daisy was starting to think her second attempt hadn't worked when slowly the grime and blood vanished and the wound closed up.

Taking notes, Stella wrote in her notebook the name of the spell and who it was invented by including the effects of it. This was a advance spell, and she was only a first year she doubt she was going to master this spell.

Side note: put dittany immediately after casting the spell to avoid scarring.

Looking at her notes she read them over and over memorizing the pronunciation of the spell and reading over the wand movements. She didn't do the wand movements quite yet with her wand she wanted to get the pronunciation and the spell right before she did. "Ok... lets see if I can say this." she said under her breath. " VULN- eh rah Sah-NEN-tour wait...that isn't right, let's try this again Stella VUL-neh-rah Sah-NEN-tour, VUL-neh-rah Sah-NEN-tour, ok... now Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur." she said to herself.

Proud that she was able to say the spell right, she wondered if it would work on the dummy as well as she said it to herself. Her wand in her hand she walked up to one that had a deep gash across the shoulder. Biting her lip she trace the wound with her wand saying in a sing-song voice. "Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur."

Looking at the wound she frowned when she seen that nothing what so ever happened to the wound. Ok... that's was ok, it was the first time she casted this spell so she couldn't be perfect and get it on the first try. Hm...what did she do wrong? Well... she was a bit nervous maybe her hand was a bit shaky. "Deep breath Stella, just relax." she told herself. Closing her eyes she took a deep breath calming her nerves before opening her eyes and raising her wand up again.

In a clear sing-song voice and steady arm movements she repeated. "Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur." Looking at the wound she seen once again it didn't budge or she so she thought. Ok... it looked like it worked some, the wound did seem smaller maybe it was just her imagination. Ok...she wasn't going to give up, she was going to get this right!

As the class set about their new activity, Gaston forced himself away from his place at the front of the room. His leg was starting to ache from his rounds up and down the rows, but wandering the room was the only way for him to monitor the students, as half the class was on his blind side at any given time. Inwardly cursing his blindness, he continued weaving between the rows, his cane thudding dully against the floor as he went.

He stopped beside Daisy's desk and saw her try and fail to cast the spell. He took a deep breath in as she tried again, silently hoping her next try would go better. A warm smile spread across his face upon seeing the residue vanish and the wound close. "Well done, Miss Swann!" he said.

Elsewhere, he saw another student struggling and rushed to Stella's side. "Nice start, Miss Starson," he said, examining her work. She was pronouncing the incantation correctly, and she had the wand movement down... so what advice could he give her. "You're on the right track, but your rhythm's a tad off. Try saying the spell a little slower, and see if that helps." He gave her an encouraging smile before turning away.

Gaston glanced at his watch. Class was almost over. He sighed; how he wish he had a time turner to make the class last longer! But that wasn't possible. "FIVE MINUTES LEFT!" he announced.

OOC: Sorry I wan't able to post sooner... RL happened. Anyway, you have JUST UNDER 30 HOURS left to finish the activity.

Five minutes left, Yikes! Where did the time go that this class went by so quickly?

Although there was only five minutes left in class, that didn't stop her from wanting to get this spell right! She wasn't going to give up until this wound on the dummy's shoulder was gone. Looking at it she seen that it was still there only slightly smaller then before, she can do this just need to focus and let the magic do the work. She could do this, this wound wasn't going to beat her!

Hearing Professor Marchand's words and encouraging smile she nodded. Now that she thought about it, she probably was saying it a bit too quick, maybe she should slow it down. " Ok... Stella just like singing a nice and slow song." she said to herself. Taking a deep breath she traced the wound with her wand and in a slow sing-song voice. "Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur." she said. Looking at the wound she frowned as she seen nothing happening, just as she let out a small sigh, the grime and blood started to vanish and the wound was slowly starting to close.

Did she do it, did she legitimately do a advance spell right?

Seeing the wound close up she smiled happily to herself and let out a little squeal of happiness. She did it! She did it! " Guess the third time is charm!" she said giggling to herself at her little joke seeing how she was in Charms.

Get it, Third time is a Charm and she's in Charms? Don't get it? Ok...maybe it's just a mind of a innocent little first year that thought it was funny.

When he was finished scribbling down all sorts of detailed notes on all the different healing charms, Max rolled up his sleeves ready to give the latest one a go on his dummy. He’d practiced a lot of charms, but never this one so he was raring to go and Professor Marchand saying that it was a very difficult spell to master only made him want to ace it first time even more.

The dummy had a large, deep looking gash across its chest and Max carefully traced his wand over the wound while saying the incantation. “Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur!”

He didn’t do it in the same sing-song voice he heard some of his classmates doing it because he didn’t want to sound like a complete idiot.

…… maybe that’s why the charm didn’t work and nothing happened.

Derf felt light, lighter than he had in a while, at this offer. Especially in light of Professor Wayland being...dismissed - a betrayal and heartache of sorts the Hufflepuff still hadn't been able to deal with - he wasn't sure what to do about his future in magizoology...and he was honestly scared to go down to the creatures area and seek the new bloke's expertise. "Will do for sure, professor," he chirped with an enthusiastic nod before settling back into the task at hand.

"Um...sorta all encompassing, professor," he began with a bit of a ruffle to his hair. "Tergeo siphons blood while Vulnera Sanentur slows the flow...so I suppose one could use Vulnera Sanentur first to try and quickly repair damage to tissue and stuff and then Tergeo to clean up a bit?" He wasn't entirely sure where he himself was going with this to be honest and his thoughts were jumping from one to the other a little rapidly before finishing. "Reckon I'm sorta asking all of the above...and the benefits of using one over the other in situations...or in conjunction to one another?"

Yeah, okay. That was a whole lot of...something. He offered the Charms professor a bit of an apologetic look because it was getting a bit off track while also somewhat being on topic? Ish.

Anywaaaaaay...he was going to focus on the charm, primarily the incantation seeing as it was unique in that it required a sort of rhythm to be done correctly. Not just intonation and pronunciation, but sorta like how the Hufflepuff barrels worked. Smiling to himself, he spoke the incantation to himself a few times - and actually sang it in an almost lullaby tone. "Vulnera Sanentur...Vulnera Sanentur...Vulnera Sanentur...."

Wandwork would come once he felt confident enough in his healing song.

Gaston smiled a little, returning Derf's nod with one of his own, though the moment didn't last long. His mind quickly switched gears as the Hufflepuff explained his question in more detail. Now he had a better idea of what kind of answer to give. He nodded, considering the boy's words. "Yes, one could do that," he said, "though it usually isn't necessary to use Tergeo after using Vulnera Sanentur. Part of Vulnera Sanentur's effect is that it cleans the residue from the wounded area. Only in extreme cases where you have a wound covered in something other than blood - dirt, slime, something like that - would you need to use Tergeo. That's the main difference in the two spells; Tergeo siphons away any liquid, while Vulnera Sanentur deals primarily with blood. You'll see Tergeo come into play as a healing spell mostly for minor cuts and injuries that don't call for a strong spell like Vulnera Sanentur."

Wow, that was long! He hoped that explanation answered Derf's questions; if not, they could always discuss it more later when he came to pick up his creature dummy. As the black-haired Frenchman meandered between the rows, his eyes once again landed on the Hufflepuff. "Good job, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne," he said, watching him practice the incantation. "I like how you're saying the spell like a lullaby."

Elsewhere, he saw Maxton unsuccessfully attempt the spell. No matter, that was to be expected. He offered an encouraging smile and some helpful advice. "You're on the right track, Mr. Carden ," he said. "Your pronunciation and wand movement are spot on; try saying it a bit more like a song."

A sudden squeal caused Gaston's head to whip around in the opposite direction. His eyes widened with concern for a split second, then just as quickly lit up at the sight of Stella's smile. So that was a squeal of joy... thank Merlin! "Congratulations, Miss Starson!" he said,
beaming. "I knew you could do it!" The joke got a slight chuckle from him. Of course, he'd heard it a thousand times before - hazard of the occupation - and he wasn't in much of a giggly mood, but it seemed unkind not to laugh at all!

He checked his watch again. "TIME IS UP!" he announced. He made his way back to the front of the room and all but collapsed into his chair; wandering around the room for most of the class was exhausting! After giving the students a few moments to find a stopping place, he went on, "Well done, all if you! I'm pleased with your progress today. Class is dismissed."

OOC: That's all, folks! I gave you a few extra hours for the activity, but we need to wrap up. I'll leave the thread open another 24ish HOURS for those who want to post their charries leaving.

Juni spent the last of the lesson, beaming and grinning to herself. Of course she was keeping it to herself. As she took notes now on vulnera sanentur. She sat her quill down and watched as professor Marchand showed them how to do the spell. It was a pretty nifty spell, if you ever need it.

Her dummy had three big and deep cuts on it. Two it’s side and one on its leg just above where the bandages were. There was no way that she would even try to attempt it nonverbally. Checking over her notes again before picking up her wand.

”Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur.” As she traced the first wound on the dummy’s side. She slowly and carefully traced the wound and repeated the incantation three times. It was weird to watch the wounds heal. In fact at least it wasn’t as gross as seeing it open.

Next she moved to the next would on the other side. Still choosing not to perform the spell nonverbally. ”Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur.” Again she slowly traced the wound with her wand as it healed itself.

Hearing the professor say that here were five minutes left. She quickly moved to the last wound on the leg of the dummy. ”Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur, Vulnera Sanentur.” Tracing the wound as she did the other two wounds. She watched the wound heal, luckily she had just gotten finished up in just in time.

She packed up her things, and got ready to leave. Nodding to the professor as she passed. ’Thanks for the really good lesson professor.” The lesson had been really good. It definitely made her think more into being healer now.

Pausing, Derf listened keenly as Professor Marchand readdressed his initial inquiry and nodded along while reaching for his piece of parchment and quill to scribble down a few additional notes. "Thanks, that makes a whole load of sense," he nodded with another eager grin. And he appreciated the encouragement in his spellwork, or the potential spellwork, but he was apprehensive about the actual execution of it. This was ALWAYS where things fell apart, even with his best of intentions. He did give the wand movement a few trials before attempting to put the two together, with minor results over the selected wound. It closed a little bit and the surrounding area seemed a bit more clean....so all in all not a terrible first attempt but not nearly enough to be consider satisfactory. But still, not a complete failure!

A couple of tries later and class was dismissed. Quickly packing up his things, Derf approached the Charms professor. Since he had buisness with the man anyway... "Need some help with these dummies, professor?" Likely not considering it was easy enough to levitate them or banish them to their desired location...but he was an eager cruppy here in anticipation of his own dummy to work on.

As Gaston watched his students finishing up, he saw Juni pick up on Vilnera Sanentur remarkably quickly. He beamed. Somehow he had a feeling she would master that spell quicker than most... she'd already shown her talent for healing! "Excellent work, Miss Primeaux!" he said, smiling slightly as she finished her work and packed up. He returned her nod, and his smile grew wider at her words. "You're very welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it!"

Derf also made excellent progress. From where he stood, Gaston could see the Hufflepuff move on to practicing the wand movement, then try to put the incantation with the movement. He saw the attempt had been moderately successful; the area looked cleaner and the wound closed a bit. That was certainly a good start! "Very good, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne," he said, beaming. "Practice makes perfect." And hopefully the creature dummy would give him lots of incentive to practice!

Speaking of which, Gaston couldn't help but notice how eager the Hufflepuff prefect seemed. He'd have to be blind not to - or at least blind in both eyes! Not that he could blame him, of course. The offer for help got a slight smile from him, though he shook his head. "That's very kind of you, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne," he said, "but I can manage. We can't have you arriving late to your next class." Particularly if that class was taught by Scrimgeour or one of his minions! "Stop by my office this afternoon, and I'll have your dummy ready for you."

OOC: Closing the thread a few hours early because I feel sick and may not be awake at the scheduled time. Thank you so much for participating!
