This is the place where you can learn the theories of arithmancy if you were not in attendance last term, plus its always good to have something to go back and look at even if you did attend. If you have any questions please direct them to myself in the question thread. :sorcerer:

OK, I begin at the beginning, because it would be foolish to begin with the end. HEHEHE. Arithmancy is the study of divination with numbers and can be quite interesting in how accurate it really is. We began last term with the Pythagorean System. In this system we assign each letter of the alphabet a number from 1 through 9. This is the chart that you use to reference:

1 A J S
2 B K T
3 C L U
4 D M V
5 E N W
6 F O X
7 G P Y
8 H Q Z
9 I R

Now to use this chart we will take a name and figure out its numbers for example:

H 8
A 1
R 9
R 9
Y 7

P 7
O 6
T 2
T 2
E 5
R 9

Now the sum of all the numbers is the character number. The sum of all the vowels (AEIOU and sometimes Y) is the heart number. The sum of all the consonants is the social number. However all number must end up being a singler digit number from 1 through 9. So all number must be reduced to within these numbers. For example:

HARRY POTTER
81997 762259

All:
8+1+9+9+7+7+6+2+2+5+9=65=6+5=11=1+1=2

Vowels:
1+6+5=12=1+2=3

Consonants:
8+9+9+7+7+2+2+9=53=5+3=8

Now when all the number have been deduced you can indicate them by writing them in brackets (character, heart, social) or (2, 3,8). Now that we know how to figure out these numbers what do they all mean? Well;

What the Reduced Numbers Mean (Blue references character, green references heart and purple references social numbers)

1. Individual, independent, focused and determined. A solitaire.
One’s set goals and finish what they are determined to do, often work best alone than with others and lead well rather than take orders. Ones are loners, self-centered, egotistical and domineering.

2. The pair, two’s enjoy interaction, two-way communication and balance. They are imaginative and creative, sweetly-natured to most. Two’s make good friends best at commitment, loyalty and fairness, you will find them one with peace and harmony. With two-way communication also comes conflict, opposite forces and contrast, think good cop and bad cop. They are often withdrawn, moody, indecisive and self-conscious.

3. Three’s are whole and complete, think mind-body-spirit or past-present-future, often important in the wizarding world. They are often talented and artistic, great with humor and social ease, three’s have great energy. Often greatly successful, they are lucky and easygoing but can become unfocused, superficial and easily offended.

4. Stability and firm, four’s do enjoy hard work. Practical, reliable and down to earth, are logical in life. Organization is key and they prefer to get things done rather than leave loose ends hanging. Like spring, summer, winter and fall a four is predictable. Four’s drive to stability can make them stubborn, suspicious, overtly sensible and prone to flights of angry outbursts. Multiply two by two and you get four, doubling the danger.

5. Uncertain and unstable is a five. Often imbalanced and ever changing, fives tend to take on many tasks but fail to commit to any. Risk-takers and adventurous, their energetic nature makes them enjoy travel and enjoy meeting new people, often moving on to a new place quickly they fail to stay in one place very long. They are conceited, careless, quick-tempered and impatient.

6. Harmonious and loyal, reliable and loving, six’s enjoy friendships and family companionship. Adaptable, often drawn to teach others and love the arts, unsuccessful in business. Their companionship drive often makes them gossipy and self-righteous.

7. Seven’s enjoy mystery, perceptive and understanding they enjoy hard work and being challenged. Seven’s are bright, serious and do well in learning. Often original and imaginative, they down play the emphasis on money and material possessions. Seven’s are often pessimistic, sarcastic and insecure.

8. The business man, successful in business, finance and politics. Practical, ambitious, committed and hard working develops into jealousy, greed, domination and power-hungry. The most unpredictable of all, are either the pinnacle of success or the depth of failure.

9. Again, a multiple, three three’s indicate completion and achievement to the fullest degree. Dedicated to serve, often teachers, scientists or humanitarians. Nine’s work endlessly and inspirational to others, their strong determination shows through. This completion can often lead to arrogance, and being conceited when things go awry.

Now its believed that a person must try and align their lives with their character number. If you live in a city with the same number as your character number you live in harmony. Often your favorite foods follow the same trait. It is also believed that your closest friends will have similar numbers to your own. Try working out your numbers and see if this is true.

OK, now that we have names out of the way lets take a brief look at birthdates and their importance into one's meaning of self or lifepath number. While your birthdate may not be unique to each person, each person is unique and may find that while sharing some traits others can be quite different. Now in dealing with birthdates we move away from our 9 number system and to an 11 number system. Therefore when reducing a birthdate to discover its meaning we no longer reduce 10 or 11 as these numbers have meanings in this system. For example:

July 23, 1979 is 07-23-1979

0+7+2+3+1+9+7+9=38=3+8=11

We stop with 11.

July 26, 1979 is 07-26-1979

0+7+2+6+1+9+7+9=41=4+1=5

Now again each of these numbers have lifepath meanings:

1 Initiative
2 Integration
3 Expression
4 Growth and Foundation
5 Vision
6 Responsibilty
7 Knowledge
8 Goals
9 Generosity
10 Dreams
11 Leadership

Try working out your birthdate to see if your meaning is applicable to you!
