"Nonsense," Professor Phoenix said to Nadia. "These Devil's Snares are not being tortured by the light or fire. You need to know how to defend yourselves against them - and if you think you can do that in theory only, fair enough, you can. But I believe in practice. If you are overcome by one, you need to know what to do, you need to have done it before. Devil's Snares are dark plants, yes - but that doesn't make them bad. It's their nature, as you said. But, just because it's their nature, I don't think you would agree if they decided to eat you."

Professor Phoenix grinned a little. "And thank-you for demonstrating the counter-charm for Lumos, Nadia. As you might've heard or already know, it is Nox. This charm is not accompanied by any wand movement. It reacts only to a wand lit with Lumos that is connected to the speaker. Try it please; and then activate Lumos again."

"You won't be," Professor Phoenix said, smiling reassuringly.

::Riley brings her gaze away from the angrily hissing plant in front of her and grudgingly states the incantation.::

"Nox." she mutters, and the light at the end of her wand extinguishes itself easily. The devils snare has moved back into its original postion, it's tentacles groping around in the air for unseen food.

"As if you don't get enough food already..."

*raises wand which is still shining at the end*

"Nox!" Her wand only dims a bit.

"Nox!" she says again and the light goes out.

"Nox" wand light goes out

"Well I didn't mean it theory only, I was just thinking we could use extra-help from the DADA teacher, to control them in case one or two get out of hand. I remembered we tried a mix-class last term with professor Hendrik, studing Mandrakes and Moonclaves, and thought we could have done the same with this class. But I think we got it under control," Nadia says eyeing with precaution the Devil's Snare. Shivers returning her attention to the spells.

Nadia puts light on and off a few times watching the reactions from the Devil Snare.

"I just look at how frightened it seems, the Devil's Snare, and well, I think I pity it a little..."

Keeps practicing the spell, trying to get it to turn off and on without reciting the enchantment.

"I'll see what we can do," Professor Phoenix said in answer to Nadia's request. "It depends on what the other classes are doing and if the opportunity comes up."

She looked around to see that most students were doing quite well.

"Okay, thank you. If you could please bring your Devil's Snares back to the front," she said, tapping the blackboard with her wand.


Homework

Write a few sentences about the two spells you learnt in your first lesson. What are their incantations, their wand movements, their effects? Explain the main differences between the two spells. Any ideas where you would use which?

*packs everything back into her bag*

"Bye Professor!"

Professor Phoenix waved, packing the Devil's Snares into crates with a few flicks of her wand.

::Riley copies down the homework on her parchment and packs her things into her bag. She holds the splintered remains of her sugar quill in her hand and sends the devil's snare a dirty look before picking it up and taking it to the front of the room.::

"Thanks for the lesson professor." She says, setting the plant on the shelf she had gotten it from and exiting the room.

*After finishing setting her Devil's Snare back -and dramatically relived after doing so- Nadia gathers things and stands*

"Thanks! Good bye, professor, see you next class!" Nadia calls stomping out of the classroom.

*Jess quickly gathers her things as she begins copying the homework off the board* "Thanks Professor, see you next lesson" she says waving goodbye as she leaves out the door.

*Belle walks back to the front of the class and sets down her Devils Snare, which is a little more timid thanks to the fact that she is holding her wand in her other hand.

"This was a great lesson Professor!! See ya later!"

Professor Phoenix left the greenhouse with the last students and locked it behind herself, posting a note to the door.
