If a dark wizard attacked you, you might disarm them with expelliarums, then use this spell to bind them. You would restrain them without hurting them that way.

"Thank you, Raven. Now, if you'll just stand across from me..." She positions Raven so that the girl is standing about five feet from her. They were facing each other.
"Now, I'm going to cast incarcerous on you so that the class can see the effects. It shouldn't hurt you, although you could get rope burns if you struggle against them. I will cut you loose after a moment. Please pay attention, class."
She faced Raven again and shouted, "Incarcerous!" while waving a sweeping circle with her wand. Ropes sprang from her wand and wrapped themselves around Raven.

Anhaire, maybe I misunderstood...but I don't think the professor meant that the ropes would tighten if you struggle...just that if you do struggle they are already tight enough to cause rope burn. Is that correct, professor? | |

It just seemed that you would have to struggle very hard to get rope burns, so I assumed the spell caused the victim to be trapped more tightly if they struggled.

"The ropes don't tighten if you struggle, but they are thick, rough ropes, and they will chafe if you pull against them. The same holds true even for non-magical ropes."
She turned to Raven. "Diffindo!" The ropes fell away as if cut. "Evanesco!" The ropes disappeared. "Thank you, Raven. That'll be five points for Ravenclaw for your assistance. Now, before you return to your seats, I'd like you to find a partner again. Go ahead and practice this spell a few times. You may dispose of the robes with Diffindo and Evanesco as I did. Be careful with your Diffindo... you don't want to use an unfocused version and cut something other than the ropes."
