"And Malfoy!" *Carolina adds*

kool-mo-dee 04-02-2004 03:27 AM

Voldemort!

Cassirin 04-02-2004 03:28 AM

"Excellent, quidditch_chick... five points to Ravenclaw. And five points to Slytherin, for your answer Tidus. Grindlewald and Tom Riddle, also known as Voldemort, were the major dark wizards of the last century. Who knows the name of our current adversary?"

"As for your other answers, you are correct in knowing well-known Death Eaters and dark art followers, but these men and women were merely following a more powerful wizard. Their names probably will not go down in history in the same context. We don't remember much about Grindlewald's second in command."

ooc: extra credit for actually paying attention and knowing this LOL

MusicGirl87 04-02-2004 03:28 AM

"Avery. He was famous for being the first deatheater to grovel at the feet of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named," MI said matter-of-factly, and settled down into her desk once more.

OOC: Whoops, that was for the last question.

Tidus16 04-02-2004 03:30 AM

Voldemort

kool-mo-dee 04-02-2004 03:32 AM

My dad is a deatheater he is You know who's right hand man even though you don't hear of him but he is

Cassirin 04-02-2004 03:40 AM

ooc: I want to let those of you who do NOT know already that the school plotline is set after the HP plotline... thus the reason you have different profs and fellow students then Harry Potter. So... does anyone know who the current dark wizard is?

Tidus16 04-02-2004 03:45 AM

Voldemortis.

Cassirin 04-02-2004 03:50 AM

"Close enough, Tidus... 10 points to Slytherin! Yes, Voldemortist was responsible for much of what occurred here at Hogwarts last term. However, if you want to know more about that, I suggest you not ask a new professor like myself."

"Moving on... or back, I suppose... what can you tell me about Grindlewald?"

EmMa_WaTsOn89 04-02-2004 03:50 AM

Voldomort

Tidus16 04-02-2004 03:53 AM

I only remember that dumbledore killed him.

quidditch_chick 04-02-2004 03:58 AM

"He was defeated by Dumbledore in 1945(?).."

Cassirin 04-02-2004 04:16 AM

"Five points to Slytherin and five to Ravenclaw. You're correct. Grindlewald was a German Dark Wizard who was defeated in 1945 by Dumbledore. In fact, Grindlewald was largly responsible for the Muggle conflict known as World War II."

"Now... much more is known about Voldemort, who was actually a British wizard. What can you tell me about his first rise to power?"

ooc: Sorry about that... please stay with me.

quidditch_chick 04-02-2004 04:25 AM

"I'm guessing it would be when Voldemort first gained supporters (Death Eaters). Then went about killing and torturing people and letting the world know that they're dark and evil by creating the Dark Mark..."

Cassirin 04-02-2004 04:32 AM

"Very good, quidditch_chick... five more points to Ravenclaw. What else can the class tell me?"

ooc: I'm going to just leave this open for a bit. No chatting. I'll be around.

Tidus16 04-02-2004 04:41 AM

Also, he after school he dissapered to go and learn the dark arts and gain knowledge before he started gaining followers and fight the ministry.

Dracnyzz 04-02-2004 04:44 AM

"He enjoyed torturing muggles or 'mudbloods' as he and his Death Eaters called them. Wizards were afraid to speak his name, and even now, still are, and refer to him as "You-Know-Who" or "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named."

Tidus16 04-02-2004 04:53 AM

Also he threatened, curesed and blackmailed people to join him, also made promises to dark creature like dementors. Also had giants to fight along with him.

quidditch_chick 04-02-2004 04:58 AM

"Isn't that when the Order of the Phoenix assembled? To stop Voldemort? I think so. So when the OOTP tired to stop Voldemort he killed of members and entire families like the Prewetts, etc. (....I think)"

DracosAngel 04-02-2004 05:07 AM

And those he didn't kill stayed "alive", but had to be institutionalized at St. Mungo's, like the Longbottoms. I think I'd rather be dead than live a life like that.

*Belle shuddered at the thought.

"Also, there were people who were controlled, manipulated by the dark leaders, and they were put into Azkaban, or worse, killed."

virginiap 04-02-2004 05:46 AM

Professor, I believe a lot of Voldemort's turn toward dark magic was due to his anger at his father. If I recall the story correctly, his father was a Muggle who deserted his mother when he found out she was a witch. Voldemort's mother died in childbirth, leaving him an orphan. As Voldemort grew older, his fury at his father turned him against Muggles and those witches and wizards with a Muggle parent or parents. He spent much of his teenage years learning all he could about the dark arts and eventually gathered a group of like-minded followers who then terrorized Muggles, wizards and witches born to Muggles, and any other witches or wizards who opposed him.

Cassirin 04-02-2004 06:17 AM

"I can tell you are all well informed about Voldemort's rise. Ten points to Slytherin, and 5 each to Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. Nice work."

"I don't need to tell you what happened to end Voldemort's first rise to power, do I? I'm sure we're very familiar with the story of the Boy-Who-Lived."

"Many of you have asked about what causes someone to become a dark wizard. Let's look again at Voldemort, because he is clearly a dark wizard we are all familiar with. By all accounts, Tom Riddle was a good student who performed 'services' for the school and fooled almost everyone around him. He seemed like an upstanding citizen. What would drive him to the point to become the power-hungry murderer that he was in his day?"

swedishharrypotterfan 04-02-2004 07:18 AM

*raises hand*

Well, as Virginiap said earlier, his father ( a muggle) abanded him, something that led to his hatred of muggles and mudbloods (pardon my language). When he started to think of ways to get back at him, he probably learned that there was a whole world of dark magic that he had not known about. With that dark magic came power, and I think that once he figured out that people would even follow him if he was evil, there was no turning back.

Hermione_loves_Ron 04-02-2004 07:21 AM

"Adding on to that," Ashlie said. "How do we know Tom never had an interest in the Dark Arts? Perhaps he contemplated this from the time he was young. Do we not remember Rubeus Hagrid being expelled because of Tom's baskilisk? He seems to always have had a Dark thread through him. Perhpaps because of hatred to his father, perhaps because of various other things. Maybe he'd always been that way."

fox 04-02-2004 09:26 AM

*fox starts to reply thoughtfully*
I think the real reason Tom Riddle turned to the dark arts is that he didn't have any choice. I mean, wasn't he the only true heir of Salazar Slytherin? Wasn't he having the same opinion about Muggleborns? He didn't have any choice but continue Slitheryn's work, because it was in his blood.
