Yes, the dark cloak and hood make it impossible to really study what the dementor looks like, but..." She cast a quick charm, making a figure shoot out of her wand. It was a small model of dementor, about a foot tall and revolving.
"Please note the gray, scaly hand. I've heard several of you say it is corpse-like. That is an excellent analogy. Also, note how, when the hood is pulled back, the face lacks much facial definition, except for the mouth, through which the dementor sucks souls. Now, for the sounds effects." She flicked the wand again, and a rattling breathy noise filled the room. "A bit disconcerting, no."
"VirginiaP, no one could say for sure what the origin of dark creatures are, although some people believe that they are demons or something similar. As for the soul, yes, it is devoured like the positive emotions. It is, in fact, a major source of sustenance for dementors."
"Let's move on, now, to the actual defense portion of the lesson. We don't have much time to cover it, so I imagine your homework will give you some practice. What is the best spell to use against dementors?"

"The Patronus spell is a wispy cloud of smoke, taking the form of a character, as Miss Radcliffe the Pirate explained. It seems to charge the dementors after the incantation. The dementors stumble and are forced to back away. To produce this, you have to block out the bad memory, and concentrate on your happiest moment."

"The patronus is a projectment of good feelings that the dementor feeds off of while the witch or wizard in question can get away. If it a particualrly strong patronus it will sometimes charge the dementor down. It also takes great strength of mind to keep the patronus in existence while in the presence of a dementor." | |

"Five points to Ravenclaw. Very good, Ashlie. The patronus spell, which uses the incantation expecto patronum, does appear as a silvery gray animal shape. It is the embodiment of the positive thoughts of the spell-castor. Typically, wizards and witches of your age and experience do not create a fully corporeal Patronus."
"Expecto Patronum!" The professor show a large chicken out of her wand. "I realize it's a bit silly, and I used to be quite embarrassed by it. Ashlie smiled. "I like chickens," she said. Then she turned and tried the spell herself. "EXPECTRO PATRONUM!" A silvery otter came from her wand. She concealed a squeal of delight. "I think I've done it!" It was rather wispy though and very weak. Trying agian, a fuller otter appeared, less wispy, but of course as she'd only practiced this a few times before still not as great as the Professor's chicken, which she envied. | |
