Opening a well-hidden door in the dungeons allows you access to the many underground chambers beneath the castle. While this discovery may be exciting, it is important to move forward with caution -- hopefully you've come along with some friends, just in case something should go terribly wrong. No, you've thankfully not stumbled upon the Chamber of Secrets. But only Merlin knows what you'll find here.
You start off in a chamber containing a dusty table where seven bottles once rested. Whether you find that interesting or not, it is the two doors present in the room that play at your curiosity. Going through one door will take you into an antechamber that leads to a much bigger room. Here a large mirror can be found, which will reveal something interesting about yourself if you stand in front of it properly. The other door, however, stems off into a series of chambers. First you find yourself in a spacious room, though there isn't much to be seen besides a thick layer of dust (with a dash of decayed troll bone) on the floor. Carrying onward, a giant chess board is revealed (to play a life-sized game, one need only cast Reparo on the mutilated pieces) and then a room filled with an array of winged keys. Lastly is a chamber that is relatively harmless ... as long as the blue flames remain lit.
Perhaps you've learned about this place once in history class? It all seems oddly familiar. Hmm.
Quinn rolled her eyes and dug into her bag for a quill, and ink. Once she had them she took his book back, and on the inside cover, not the first page, she wrote it out for him. E-F-F-I-N-G-O...L-I-B-R-U-M. Then she underlined it twice.
She watched Reese step in front of the mirror, watched that curious smile spread across his lips. There was something almost cruel about it. "I'll tell you what I saw if you tell me what you saw," she said. She'd even give him all the context he might need to fully get hers. "The truth though. Not stories. Otherwise, no deal." She was willing to tell him the truth; he was one of the few she was willing to tell really, but he had to be truthful too.
The first year badger looked over at his friend and considered her offer and then back at the reflection a much older him in all the magical magazines and newspapers..
He stepped back and went over to where she stood and looked at her dead in her eyes. " Alright.. Deal..", he agreed with a nod.. " I was famous and had just received an award from the ministry for the magical stride made possible by my experiments with cross-breeding magical creatures and also incorporate animals from the mundane species as well to see what affect they may have as well on magical ability and/or properties... ", Reese said.. All without missing a beat.. Yeah... He had goals!
" What about you?.. What'd ya see when you looked into it? "
She nodded at his answer. Sure, she couldn't be completely sure it was the truth, but it fit. And it fit that odd smile he had worn. She believed him. "Sit." This might take a while.
"I saw myself as Beth's adopted sister..." Which was why she had been sort of floored by it. It's one thing to idly wonder, or even wish, to be part of the happy, loving family next door, another to find out it's your deepest desire. Because that is what the Mirror of Erised showed you, your deepest wish that will bring you your happiness.
"Context? My parents are awful. We weren't lying about that on the train. And they really did go on vacation without me, as always, this summer, but took our house elf. And they really did cancel my 10th birthday to go to the French Riviera. Not exactly unprecedented, but you'd think they'd muster up just a bit of decency for one birthday, given it was the brithday I might never have had. I had Leukemia, and was dying, and would have if not for Beth and her bone marrow. They left me in the hospital for over a year, because they didn't want to inconvenience themselves with all the changes that had to be made for me to be an outpatient. They visited sporadically and rarely." She paused long enough for all that to sink in. "And so apparently my deepest wish is to have a new family. And now we never speak of this again, got it?"
Beth just laughed when Quinn brought up asking her mother about the book, she just shrugged in response. ”because, she didn’t trust me after that book caught fire – wasn’t my fault…I had the pox” she sighed dramatically and almost leaned against Quinn.
Beth watched Quinn for a moment, the way the social chameleon always seemed to watch people at first. Still, this wasn’t an at first moment, this was her trying to get a read on what her little owl girl was going through, what she was seeing upon the charmed glass.
Reese’s question just got him a little smirk, ”…there are many ways I bet…being sal—“ she paused the word cutting off ”rude sass monsters probably is a big part of it” she shrugged refusing to say that word. Nope, not when Quinn knew almost everything and would get it, hell, Quinn would never let it die out.
”are you a slytherin – or did you burn the sorting hat? Beth joked over to Reese the moment that smile flitted across her face, leaning in she glanced at the mirror the curiosity getting to her. ”do I have to tell you too?” she asked looking at the mirror because merlin maybe she didn’t want to say? It might have been embarrassing but really – Quinn’d get it. ”i’m singing – like lead of a band singing oh and Quinny, you were there playing violin for that one song” she told her with a confident smile, ”I think…I think it was with Vindictus records and everything,” she sighed, that was the dream. "i saw that...correct mine to what she said, obviously" Beth informed with a wink.

Honestly, Derf was starting to feel a bit guilty about all this since, well, he had interrupted and now he was mostly monopolizing Emmalyn's time when she had come here with Ewan. Though, for now, he continued to smile at his housemate as he recognized the t[B]winkle of curiosity in her eyes. "Yup," he grinned, even adding a bit of an eyebrow wiggle just because he could.
Soon enough she was beginning to speak to him as though they were business associates or something - he had sat in on some of his dad's meetings when he was younger, though it mostly had all gone over his head. Department head talks in Accidents and Catastrophes was beyond complicated. "No offense, Emmalyn but...I reckon you can't really speak for Ewan," he chuckled, offering the Ravenclaw a bit of an apologetic smile. because, well, she was cutting a deal that included him without consulting him and stuff. "Though...not entirely sure why we need to have a deal anyway. Friendship isn't about give and take, yeah?"
Running a hand through his hair, the fifth year leaned back on his hands and observed the two of them for a bit. "But...if you both are keen to help me out, then sure. I'm gonna start with trying to get a standard muggle chess board, see if I can get it to behave like wizard's chess before I start on the big board. Though I'm gonna try to get knight piece to move first. No weapons with a horse, you know?" he explained with a chuckle.
Though the offer of being a taste tester, well, that made him anxious. He didn't NOT like chocolate...but there was a lot of anxiety surrounding magically enhanced food at this school and the long long history of it. "What are you guys aiming to do with the chocolate? Magical in what sense?"
Derf was starting to grow on him a bit now. Despite his initial indifference to the older hufflepuff, he'd appreciated the him stepping in on his behalf, even if he didn't mind Emmalyn talking on his behalf. With a tentative smile at Derf, he run his hands through his hair "Uh, thanks Derf, don't worry, i'm not sure how much help i'll be but I'll give it a go! You think it might be worth looking back through any books about the original board? Maybe it'll lead back to some spell to use on it now. " He wasn't exactly sure how he could help but putting forward a suggestion made him feel slightly better, even if it wasn't a great one.
Catching the apprehensive look on his face when chocolate tasting was mentioned, he grinned "Oh yeah, we're going to make chocolate that's been cursed to engorge your head; and others that'll swell your throat until all you can do is talk like a whistle...". With a mischievous smile, he started laughing. "Nah, in all seriousness, you sort of interrupted our first meeting. I mean, if you have any ideas, we're all ears. Although, I just wanted to make amazing tasting chocolate with a little wizard finesse to it". Shaking slightly with excitement now, he smiled at them both. All this talk of chocolate had put everything else out of his mind.
Reese came to sit beside Quinn at her direction.. He couldn't help the fact that his little ginger heart was breaking for his newest best friend.. It wasn't fair that she had been basically locked away and halfway forgotten all because she had a deadly disease that had tried so desperately to extinguish her flame... UGH! His knuckles turned white from how tightly he was clenching his fists as she told him of cancelled birthdays and her parents' child-free vacations to exotic places.
He hadn't even realized that his expression had taken on a softer more sympathetic tone.. That he had reached out to touch her shoulder in an involuntary effort to show his support for her. " I bet Bethlebee'd be the best sister for ya if it were to ever work out that way.. Yur secret's safe with me, Quinnie.. ", he added as he gestured to lock his lips and hand her the imaginary key he'd just used.
" I wonder if the Insendio charm'd work on it or if it's got protective enchantments against it?", he joked back to Beth with a cheeky grin.. He was so full of naughtiness when around these two and he loved it!
He nodded that he'd like to know what her deepest desires were.. After all... She HAD heard his, yes?... And so, she shared too what she had seen and he actually, wasn't at all surprised.. Anabeth seemed to like being the center of attention wherever they went.. But that is what he liked most about her... She made things fun and kept it interesting no matter where they were or what they were doing.. " Fits ya!.. Yur gonna hafta sing fur me now though.. Show me what ya got.. Maybe I could put some moves down on the beat? ", he added with a smile and a sparkle in his blue eyes.

She instantly felt bad when Derf said she shouldn't speak for Ewan. She hadn't meant to do so. She was just trying to give the first year a way out if he wasn't interested in continuing. "Sorry, Ewan, I never meant to speak for you." Her face still looked sad as she spoke to Derf, "We are friends. I didn't mean to imply we weren't or that we needed some formal agreement." Her foot seemed to be spending a lot of time in her mouth. She shook her head. "Let's start again. I'd love to help you with your project and you are welcome to what we make. Well, my share at least." That sounded better.
"No weapons for a first try sounds like a grand plan." She giggled back, wondering what it would look like having a knight piece roaming around the board. She had only seen wizards chess once and that had been the previous year for only a few moments.
She listened while Ewan spoke of their first meeting and how they hadn't made any real plans yet. "He's right. We really don't know what we are doing, yet. I had been reading up a bit about magical ingredients that you can put in foods. I'd love to try out a truffle that makes you breath fire or some fudge that can make you float just a bit." Her eyes darted back and forth between Derf and Ewan, wondering if they both thought her crazy to even think of trying to do either of those treats. "What do you think, Ewan? Are you up for trying? Derf, would you taste test them if we made them?"
Smiling now at Emmalyn, he honestly didn't mind. I mean, they were friends, it happens. "Don't worry about it, I'm a big boy, I can take care of myself", waving his hand as if flick the situation away, he smiled. This had the outline of a plan, and a good plan at that. With both plans sounding great, he turned towards them Emmalyn "That chocolate does sound pretty good! Although if the truffles make you breath fire, maybe we could make...Chilli truffles? Call them Hungarian Horntruffles or something".
Grinning now, amused at the little name he'd made for them, he started packing up some of his things again. "Maybe we should come back again another day?". Today had been a step in the right direction but that plans had changed now. They'd have to re-plan and comeback. Stronger than ever!

Quinn nodded her appreciation to Reese. She was glad he was proving, at least for now, she was right that she could trust him. And mostly in that he was recognizing she wanted to drop it and moving on without issue. Grand.
Quinn watched Beth and Reese for a moment, curiously. Was it just her, or was there a bit of mutual flirting going on? Well, with Beth, there was always flirting going on, but it seemed a little like Reese might be flirting back. It was a bit entertaining, honestly. "It's a bit grand you didn't press her on that, Reese. It might be like throwing salt on a wound." She was watching Beth as she said that, biting her lower lip to contain the smirk wanting to happen.
And...wait? Her eyes snapped back to Reese, searching for just a moment. "You want to try and set the mirror on fire?"Boys. So destructive. She shook her head, more amused than anything else.
"Yes, Beth. Sing for him. I'll even provide the music for you." Quinn reached into her back and pulled out an instrument case that was a bit too big to fit in the bag. She opened it and withdrew a sharp, well taken care of violin and bow, and stood up. Resting the violin against her chin, bow hovering above the strings, she turned to the other two. "Ready?"
If Reese knew she thought that he was flirting with Beth he would tell her that she was sorely mistaken.. He wasn't even really looking at girls in that way... Was he? Even if he were he wouldn't let on that he fancied anyone.. That would put a huge target for getting teased on his back and he wasn't dumb enough to do that. Nope!
" WHAT?!.. No!.. I was talkin' 'bout the bloody Sorting Hat... I wanna reduce it to ash for sticking me in Hugsville... Honestly... I don't get how everyone in my house is always so cheerful and nice.. It's quite annoying really.", he added as he got back to his feet and went to look at the reflection of his much older, revered and successful self in the Mirror.
Then he heard the sound of Quinn's violin strings brought to life by the drag of her bow and it brought a thoughtful smile to his lips.. It was such a bright sound that clashed against the darkness that surrounded their wand lights' dome..
Beth couldn’t help but smile when Reese said she’d be Quinn’s best sister. Hell yeah she would, of course she didn’t say it, she just smirked over to him because seeeee it worked. ”and yours, it works for you…if you ever need an alibi for things I’ll help – and free of charge” coming from her, those words meant it was serious.
He was a friend, friends didn’t have to pay for her services. Quinn, of course, was right. Flirting was sort of like breathing for Beth, and then the salt comments…what was she doing? Beth’s eyes locked on her friend an eyebrow raising as if she was challenging her. ”there is no salt here Quinnlin,” Beth hissed out more comically than anything.
Really? Sing for them? ”fiiiine, in a bit – and I knew that Reese…see, Quinn here doesn’t get you were obviously supposed to be my house mate and not a Hufflepuff of all things” she smirked softly, grinning over to them – luckily it seemed like he didn’t catch the salt comment. ”Quinn, love…I swear by all the salt in me that if you press that I’ll bite you…don’t doubt that” she did however wink so maybe her answer wasn’t that clear at all?
Still, the snakelet stood up, took a few steps before turning around and pacing a bit. Her mind was reeling at the idea of what to sing. ”okay, okay…Quinny, I have a song in mind” she smiled, before dramatically pretended to learn on the mirror, as if something horribly sad was happening. That, was when she moved forward slowly, lifting her chin just slightly she began to sing into the imaginary microphone she was holding near her face – it was a stand microphone of course. With that of course, the girl dramatically pulled her arms closer and further from her face at key parts of the song.
”aaaaaaat laaaaast my loooooooove has come along” she sang as she tried to adopt that sorrowfully beautiful voice she adored so much. ”my lonely days. Are over, and life is like a song, at laaaast the skies above are blue” she winked over to Quinn there as she began almost swaying as she sang, her eyes closing as she did this. ”my heart was wrapped in closer the night I looked at you, ” the smile on her face was telling she loved it – singing, and the song too. The song more so. ”I found a dream that I can speak to, a dream that I can call my own – I found a thrill to press my cheek to a thrill I’ve never known – you smiled, and then th e spell was cast and here we. Are in heaving – for you are miiiine at last” her cheeks were warm, of course, as she spoke.
Not for any other reason than this was the first time she had sung this song to anyone, and Quinn knew of course that it was one of her favorites. ”at laaaaaast, my love. Has come along, my lonely days are over and life is like a song” she smiled softly, her eyes still closed as she drifted from one not to the next, from one stanza to the next. ”at laaaaast, the skies above are blue – my heart was wrapped in the night I looked at you – I found a dream, that I can speak to – a dream, that I can call my own” her eyes opened again as she neared the end of the song, ”I found a thrill to press my cheek to – a thrill, I’ve never known you smiled and then the spell was cast and here we are in heaven for you are mine at laaaaast” she smiled softly, bowing even as she came to the end of the song.
Her heart was thumping a slow steady nervous beat as she made her way to her friends and sat down again. ”so…what did you think?” she asked nervous now more than she had ever been.

Oh, the sorting hat. "Yes, by all means, incinerate that disgusting thing." Quinn shivered at the memory of it being put on her head. The last thing she wanted was to risk lice. Quinn would even help if he wanted.
She gave both Beth and Reese a smirk, still watching them. "If you say so..." There was always salt where Beth was involved. Always. See, she was just now threatening her by swearing on her all the salt in her. "Good thing I have your immune system, otherwise, I'd be worried about getting an infection from you."
As Reese complained about 'hugsville' as he called, she exchanged a glance with Beth.
He might as well be discribing Octopus directly. Their friend, and fellow first year Hufflepuff to Reese.
When Beth started singing, Quinn rolled her eyes, both at the song choice and Beth's dramatics. Of course it would be this song. Without hesitation, Quinn switched to playing that song in time with Beth on her violin.
"Dramatic and showy as ever." That was what Quinn thought. Both were good things though. They made Beth a natural performer. They made Beth, Beth.
Quinn raised her violin to her chin again, and started to play a haunting piece for herself this time, while she let Beth and Reese chat.
" All I need is for someone to be my alibi!.. Ya know I'd torch it in a heartbeat.. , Reese proclaimed. " I shoulda.. I don't fit in in Hufflepuff... I belong with one of you guys... Merlin knows I'm too smart to be a bloody badger!", he Humppffed with a grumble. Then the sound of music began to fill the chamber..
Little did the girls know.. Reese had taken dance lessons with his sister Rylee since he was a little boy.. HE studied all kinds of dance and Beth's song choice would show them just how extensive his ability to interpret what the music made him feel...
He began to dance with a grace that most people would have never thought he possessed.. His lines were delicate and never ending as his body twisted and spun.. His heart was forlorn and the n the joy that filled him as the song built.. He rose and fell with it's emotion..
When she was done Reese beamed at Beth.. " Ya got a beautiful instrument.. I wish I could sing like that.. ", he added before he looked to Quinn.. And his smile softened as she continued to play..
He was so pulled to the sound of her violin and the way she pushed and pulled her bow over it's strings.. He could feel how she felt as he listened to her play.. And he felt the sadness she held to herself.. He hoped she'd open up to him and maybe share some more tidbits about herself..

Okay. Emmalyn was taking his words, all of the, almost a bit too seriously when he had been meant to tease her more than anything. But...he was just going to keep quiet as she apologized to Ewan, who wasn't really bothered by the turn of events all that much anyway by the looks of things. Just, well, the Hufflepuff was particularly sensitive to choice. And everyone could thank Levi Kenning for that.
"Okay woah hold on WOAH!" Derf chirped, eyes wide with delight and already brushing off whatever teasing remarks the Ravenclaw had offered as an initial description to their chocolate business. "Hungarian Horntruffles? You mean like...a business that creates chocolate in the image of creatures? Cause...if so, I am in. SO in." And he was even offering his hands, both of them because one for each, to make it all official and shake on. "Just, you know, long as the shapes are as vividly depicted as chocolate frogs." He had a bit of a moral crisis about those. "Your dragon series of truffles could, you know, feature a spice from their country of origin. You know, little nods there. Maybe have the actual shape be that of a dragon scale. I could easily make a mold based on my sketches and stuff."
His own agenda somewhat forgotten, though not entirely because they were both more than welcome to help him if they wanted. It was for his own personal study and stuff, but everyone could benefit from a bit of practical application and experimentation.
Though Ewan was soon suggesting that they pack things up which made his brow furrow in that way that Chloe wasn't too keen on. "Oh, sure. Yeah. And, well, you know...if you guys want I don't mind bringing you into the prefect's bathroom for a brainstorming session of something." He never saw the point in there being exclusive privilege in this sense really. Not to mention it wasn't like other prefects were bringing people in there anyway.

Beth just looked at Quinn when she still didn’t believe her…not even when she used that salt line on her, oh blunderbusses…did? Did they need to come up with iron clad unbreakable rules? Was that now a thing? Clearly, for Beth’s sake there would be a salt related rule – and one about not sneaking up…among many of the others that is.
The look Quinn gave her just put a smile on Beth’s face. Of course Octopus had hugged him, she would have loved having a friend with her in the throes of the Hufflepuff commons. Quinn, that girl knew how to make Beth smile, playing along with her singing was just one of those ways. ”I can be your alibi – heck, we both will…its more convincing if you have two people – ooooooh wait, I’ll do one better!” Beth squealed happily, ”I’ll find a way to destroy all the stores of Veritaserum in this school and replace it with water…it looks and smells the same” she grinned, after all she had read about it in the library…and she’d heard talk of it throughout the years.
”thanks Reese…I’m nothing though, without Quinn’s violin skills” she smiled and sat back down watching her friend play in such a way that made her own heart ache for what she had been through.

"Yes! That's a fantastic name for them, Ewan!" She was a bit overexcited again about all of the amazing chocolate ideas coming. Her mouth watered at the thought of the spicy chocolates.
Chocolates shaped like creatures, with ingredients that went along with where they are from. Now, that was brilliant. She jumped to her feet and ran to her bag to pull out paper and a pen. "We have to do this!" Her pen flew across the page as fast as she could write, taking down notes and scribbling a few new ideas. "This could be an amazing partnership. I spent the last few weeks of summer studying magical ingredients we could safely put into our chocolates. With the help of the two of you, we could create creature shaped and magically flavored chocolates."
Ewan wanted to STOP?? "We shouldn't quit just yet." She shook her head. "But, maybe a change of location and a brainstorming session would be a good idea." Her eyes glanced around the dimly lit room. "It is a bit creepy down here and I can't see my notes very well." She had never been in the prefects bathroom. It might work. She preferred the Hufflepuff common room, but Ewan wasn't a Hufflepuff.
She turned to the boys, "Would it really be okay for us to meet in the prefects bathroom? It would be great to get some more ideas down before we started trying to make the chocolates. Ewan seems to be great with coming up with catchy names for the confections and I'm happy to focus on the magical ingredients. Derf, you could work up the molds and help me with their counties of origin." She hoped the boys would say yes.
Appreciating her eagerness, Ewan gave her a wide smile, as if to reassure her that he did not want to stop at all. He simply wanted to go back to the drawing board and plan things out, as she’d suggested.
Raising his eyebrows slightly now at the preparations she’d made before coming to Hogwarts, he couldn’t help but be impressed by the Hufflepuff. She really could have been sorted into Ravenclaw, like him.
Hesitating slightly now at the suggestion of the prefect’s bathroom, he gave both of them a worried look.
“I can’t go in there. I’m not a prefect, Maybe the library? Or an empty classroom?”.
He really would have loved to see the prefect’s bathroom but how would he possibly be allowed in there. Giving his head a little shake now upon hearing his name, he focused on Emmalyn’s voice.
“Me? Come up with the catchy names? Sure”, A mischievous smile across his face. These really would be one of a kind. “I can do that, no problem. You give me some chocolate and what they do, and I’ll come up with some names and slogan!”.
Quinn listened to her friends chat while she played, letting herself get partially lost in the music. When she finished the piece and reality started to return around her like rays of sunlight parting the clouds, she sat down and gently placed her violin and bow back into their case.
It was still another moment before she was present enough to respond to them. "Reese, I don't think I could truly see you as a Hufflepuff, even with your robes being lined with yellow." The sorting hat didn't change the way she saw him.
And Reese was right. Beth did have a great singing voice, and it didn't require her violin at all. "And you're not half bad at dancing either," she add to Reese.
After another brief moment of silence, Quinn returned her violin to her bag and pulled out her wand. "Lumos. Isn't there supposed to be a giant chess set here somewhere?"
