Transfiguration Lesson 1: An Unusually Stony October Day
Sunlight streamed through the windows of the Transfiguration classroom on the morning of October 10. The beams illuminated the desks arranged in their usual neat rows, all facing the front of the room and the blackboard sitting primly behind the teacher's desk. A familiar wooden table had been pushed up against the wall on the far side of the room, bearing two stacks of pumpkins and other assorted objects. The objects were a wide range of random things that Professor Grimsbane had picked up since the end of last term: balloons carefully weighed down in many colors, small Halloween decorations such as rubber bats that really flew, and a variety of balls that were commonly used in Muggle sports. Across the classroom from this table, one of the desks was backed up against the wall and sported a tea pot, cups, and all of the necessary fixings for a good cup of tea.
The professor herself was steadily making her way through a stack of essays for marking, complete with many winces and facial expressions that she certainly wouldn't want students to see. As soon as her watch stated that it was 10 minutes until class was scheduled to begin, Celestia flicked her wand at the classroom door -- which promptly flew open with its usual, loud BANG!
OOC: Welcome to Transfiguration! Class has started! Don't forget that even though this is our first OOC lesson of the term, the kids have been having lessons with Celestia since September IC. Please read the Transfiguration rules thread before posting. Feel free to jump in at any time; simply pretend that your student has been there the whole time to avoid IC consequences for lateness! Also feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions, concerns, etc.

Transfiguration was always a fun class to attend. Maddie was always curious what they were going to change around each time a new lesson was presented. Sometimes she'd heard of the spell before, but other times, she was completely surprised. She kind of hoped to be surprised this time, too!
The class was looking pretty festive today, which earned a smile from the bubbly third year. "Hi, Professor!" she greeted. "I love the way it looks in here!" Maybe they were going to transform those pumpkins into pumpkin pie! Not exactly magic, but Maddie was good with making sweets!
The professor looked a little busy, so Maddie continued on her merry way and got ready for the lesson to begin. She was still looking around the room and admiring the place when the professor slammed the door closed.

It was so Halloween festive in the Transfiguration classroom, and Chloe paused in the doorway to drink it all in. The decorations and the pumpkins and that snap of fall in the air... it was perfect. The professor couldn't control the weather, but Chloe was going to give the woman credit for it anyway. Good work, Prof.
"Good day to you, Professor!" Chloe waved cheerfully at the woman, but she wasn't going to disturb her any further. Just take a seat and shut up and wait for class to start. She did pull out her book, her quill, and her parchment, ready to start taking notes the moment the professor started class.
Would Bel ever not be put in an instant good mood when people choose to sit next to her? Probably not, and she liked Juni very much. The older girl was always fun when they had hung out and Bel was eager to keep their friendship building. So she was all smiles as Juniper sat down.
"Oh, I dunno. That stuff is still kind of a novelty to me, so it sounds fun." really, the whole Halloween thing? Wasn't so present back home. Even the pumpkins in Australia were different, and definitely didn't look right for carving.
Oh good Bel was smiling, she didn’t mind that she was sitting there. Why would she though? She enjoyed her company and hoped that it was mutual. She liked hanging out with her. This was going to be great. Maybe they would even be able to work on something together in class.
Right, Australia didn’t have Halloween did they? ”I think it’s pretty cool. I love Halloween. I got a cat last term around Halloween and named her Boo.” She smiled, and glance back over at the table where the pumpkins and all of the other things were. Maybe they were going to transfigure the pumpkins into carriages like in Cinderella. Or something like that.

Her trip to the transfiguration classroom that morning had been slower than expected. She wasn't late, but she wasn't there as early as she had wanted. Her eyes darted around the room, looking for an open seat where she would still be able to see the board.
"Good morning, Professor Grimsbane. Nice pumpkins!" Her spirits were instantly lifted at the sight of Halloween items. She happily took a seat towards the middle, only one desk away from Daisy, and pulled out her items for class.
Her mind wandered to their Hogsmeade trip the previous Halloween. She loved dressing up and getting candy from the professors and shopkeepers. It was such a great time and she hoped the would do something like that again.

The thing Skylar hated about transfiguration was that the classroom was such a far walk from the Slytherin dorms, the Great Hall, and the Quidditch Pitch. If it wasn't for the fact that she was serious about pursuing advanced studies in the subject, it might have been motivational to skive off the subject more frequently.
But alas, she was present, slipping into a free seat and not even bothering to see who it was near. It didn't matter a whole lot anyway; she was here because she liked the subject not for socialization. "Morning, Professor Grimsbane!" she greeted taking note of the pumpkins as she slid her notes from her bag onto her desk.

There was one thing that being situated a little further from her friend made her see – and that one little thing was telling. It was clear, plain as day even, that Reese Prichard made Quinn smile. The blonde turned to look at him, a slight smirk on her face. ”Hey Reese,” she smiled and looked around a bit more until her eyes settled on Rylee. ”Hi Rylee,” she was about to greet Evan even when she noted that Dorian – the purple toad owner had called Ryle Rosie?
Huh, so that was one of her nicknames them? She shrugged her shoulder and turned her attention back to the classroom just in time to see Olivia walking in. The Ravenclaw girl got a small wave as well, because clearly she wanted to say hello…

”Good morning, Mr. Carter,” Celestia replied with a small smile. Naturally, she was pleased that the new Head Boy -- a Gryffindor, excellent -- had arrived first. It set the right example for the younger students. At least, she was pleased until she remembered the boy’s pumpkin allergy; no one could have missed all of the chatter in the corridors after that disastrous Potions incident last year had caused Mr. Carter to spend some time in the hospital wing. Celestia continued in a calm, measured tone: ”Everyone will have the option to use them for the second half of the class, Mr. Carter. Will you be okay being in the same room with them? What is the extent of your allergy?” If he couldn’t even be in the same room, she could make other arrangements. But the pumpkins wouldn’t even come into play until they got to today’s main task, which could easily be accomplished with one of the other objects on the table.
SPOILER!!: Daehyun
The next student in the door was a rather nervous second year who looked sleepy today. Celestia would be watching him carefully for signs of dozing, but there was no crime in morning drowsiness if he could stay awake. She felt a small knot of tension in her chest ease as the Gryffindor smiled; this was one of the students she worried about, particularly in lessons when animals were involved. The poor child would simply have to learn to work with them at some point, but luckily for him, there would be no animals used today. She flashed him a warm smile and responded simply, ”Good morning, Mr. Yoon.”
SPOILER!!: Quinn
Mr. Yoon was soon followed by one of the students whose behavior concerned Celestia the most: a mostly silent Ravenclaw first year. The way the girl’s eyes constantly roved around the classroom made Celestia think that she might have come from a troubled home, or was experiencing some sort of problems now. She was quite used to the young Ravenclaw’s silent entrances by now, but Celestia pasted a smile on her face and called, ”Good morning, Miss Kevelle,” anyway.
SPOILER!!: Stasya
The new Gryffindor Prefect who entered the room next looked a bit nervous to Celestia, but Miss Dalgaard-Volkova’s expression soon eased a bit. She was clearly relieved by the lack of animals; Celestia knew that she was one of the creature lovers in the class, of course. She knew who most of them were by now, as they had problems in her class often. She favored the prefect with a smile and a ”Good morning, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova. Happy
birthday!” after the girl’s greeting. Celestia was mostly sure that it was the Gryffindor’s birthday; she remembered other professors talking about her party last year and was convinced that it had been around this time.
SPOILER!!: Daisy
Miss Swann came in next, and immediately got a nice smile from Celestia. She admired how the young Hufflepuff always immediately began to prepare for the day ahead -- a habit that would serve her well in the future, Celestia was sure. ”Good morning, Miss Swann,” Celestia replied promptly.
SPOILER!!: Jessa
Miss Swann was soon followed by one of the Ravenclaw prefects, who also happened to be one of the students that concerned Celestia the most. Miss Cambridge was always just so lifeless in class this year. Celestia knew that the Ravenclaw was extremely talented, and had likely moved beyond what these mixed years and fifth year classes taught. She had a mind to ask the girl’s Head of House if she could move her up to N.E.W.T. level classes, but that didn’t change the fact that lessons where all years were involved would bore the prefect. It was simply impossible to teach anything too advanced when students at all levels were expected to participate. Celestia appreciated Miss Cambridge’s attendance all the same, and answered her warmly: ”Good morning, Miss Cambridge.”
SPOILER!!: Derf
It seemed that prefects were destined to enter the room in bunches today, as the Hufflepuff prefect was the next to arrive. Celestia only received a wave in greeting from the usually friendly fifth year, but she wasn’t particularly bothered by this. He seemed preoccupied today, and she herself had many days where she would rather eschew small talk. She simply returned Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne’s wave with a smile of her own and left him to it.
SPOILER!!: Dorian
”Hello, Mr. Katharos,” Celestia responded promptly to the Ravenclaw’s greeting. She was quite impressed by his improved
attendance record this year; he was always on time or even early to class these days, and Celestia greatly appreciated the effort. She gave him a warm smile as he took a seat near the middle of the room before turning her attention briefly back to the essay in front of her.
SPOILER!!: Beth
The first Slytherin of the day was next to enter the classroom. Celestia gave her the usual particularly-warm smile that she reserved for all first years, but her smile grew as the girl commented on the festive atmosphere. ”Thank you, Miss Greyvson,” she replied cheerfully. The students would be able to interact with the festive items on the table before the end of the lesson, and it was nice to see that at least one of them seemed to be looking forward to it.
SPOILER!!: Bel
”Hello, Miss Macindoe,” Celestia replied. She paused briefly before adding in a grudgingly bright tone, ”I do hope tryouts have gone well for you.” It was no secret that Celestia favored her own House, Gryffindor, in Quidditch matches -- even if the teachers who weren’t Head of Houses shouldn’t really take sides. She did want all of her students to succeed, really -- just not by beating Gryffindor at Quidditch. Still, the professor was happy for the fourth year Hufflepuff. She considered it a great accomplishment for the girl to obtain the captaincy at a fairly young age. The Hufflepuff team would certainly be one to watch out for in the coming season.
SPOILER!!: Rylee
Next into the room was the typically cheerful second year Gryffindor. Celestia was pleased to see that the young girl looked as cheerful as always today, even if she hadn’t arrived quite as early as she normally did. This was nothing compared to other students’ attendance problems, of course, but Celestia did like to keep an eye out for signs of distress in the younger students -- particularly after the horribly distressing events of the end of the last term. She returned the Gryffindor’s warm smile in equal measure and replied simply, ”Good morning, Miss Prichard.”
SPOILER!!: Rhea
Someone was in a bit of a hurry today, but that was fine with Celestia. The Ravenclaw seventh year was clearly ready for class, which she greatly appreciated. She flashed the seventh year a warm smile and replied simply, ”Good morning, Miss Durant.” Celestia noticed that Miss Durant was soon pulling out her supplies for today’s lesson -- excellent. She loved it when students were well prepared to learn.
SPOILER!!: Reese
Mr. Prichard was quite lucky that Celestia didn’t follow her natural inclination, which would be to BANG the door shut several minutes early and start the lesson before the bell rang. She had grown accustomed to waiting for the bell by now, however, so she bestowed a warm smile on the first year -- that quickly faded at his words. ”Good morning, Mr. Prichard. I certainly do not need any help, thank you. You’ve all done quite, erm, fairly well for something handed in so early in the term,” Celestia lied with a perfectly straight face. She was a bit disappointed by the class’s overall performance, actually, but she was certainly not going to tell a student that -- and especially not a first year. Celestia wasn’t sure that she was comfortable with Mr. Prichard’s assumptions about his classmates, either, but she was willing to overlook it for now.
SPOILER!!: Ewan
Another first year boy was next to arrive, and his antics immediately made Celestia smile. He seemed excited to be here, which was rare enough that she greatly appreciated any display of enthusiasm. ”Good morning, Mr. Jones. We certainly are,” she confirmed cheerfully. The Ravenclaw’s eagerness to learn was even more rare since this was a morning lesson, and Celestia appreciated it twice as much for that.
SPOILER!!: Juniper
The next student to enter was another Ravenclaw, who also seemed excited for the day’s lesson. Celestia flashed the fifth year a warm smile and replied simply, ”Good morning, Miss Primeaux.” She hoped that the day’s activities lived up to these students’ expectations.
SPOILER!!: Kye
Celestia noticed tiredness in her students like a shark scenting blood in the water. She eyed Miss Atwater carefully and made note of how her feet were dragging as she crossed the room. Celestia hoped that a seventh year wouldn’t be so discourteous as to fall asleep in class -- what a horrible example for the first years! Shoving these thoughts aside, Celestia returned the Slytherin’s smile and replied, ”Good morning, Miss Atwater.”
SPOILER!!: Zarina
Another Slytherin girl followed her sleepy Housemate into the classroom. Fortunately for Miss Carraro, she did not seem to be giving off the same obvious sense of drowsiness that her Housemate had with her dragging feet. Celestia knew that the girl had attendance issues with morning classes, though, so she was glad to see her in class today. She flashed the Slytherin a warm smile and replied, ”Good morning, Miss Carraro. It’s good to see you in class today.” Yes, that was a subtle hint that she’d notice future absences, but Celestia delivered the warning with her smile firmly hitched in place.
SPOILER!!: Olivia
The next student in the door seemed thoroughly prepared for class, something that Celestia greatly appreciated. She returned the girl’s smile warmly and replied promptly, ”Good morning, Miss Hurst.” The professor noticed that Miss Hurst seemed prepared to learn with all of her required supplies -- another thing that Celestia definitely appreciated from her youngest students.
SPOILER!!: Ari
Celestia suppressed a grin as the next first year to enter stuck her head in the door first. She appreciated the constant vigilance, of course, but it was also rather cute! She waited until the young Gryffindor had taken her seat before returning her greeting with a warm smile: ”Good morning, Miss Wedgwood.”
SPOILER!!: Abra
Celestia smiled brightly as the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain entered the room!
She was quite looking forward to the coming season, and always shamelessly demonstrated her support for her old House’s team. She never gave homework on weeks when Gryffindor had a Quidditch match to play in, for example -- but she didn’t bother giving other teams the same consideration. ”Good morning, Mr. Botros,” she replied cheerily. ”I do hope that we’re putting together a good team this year, yes?” She was sure that Mr. Botros would do an excellent job, and was a little disconcerted by his sudden shoulder slumping. Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion for a moment before her gaze dipped to the essay in front of her with its many red markings probably visible as students walked past. She gave the boy a reassuring smile and added, ”Not to worry. You all did fairly well on these.” Not that she had graded Mr. Botros’s assignment yet, but there was no reason to upset him further. She had a good idea of how the class in general had done on this particular assignment, and while she wasn’t pleased, she planned to rectify some of the main errors in today’s lesson.
SPOILER!!: Septimus
Celestia smiled at the second year who was next to arrive. His expression seemed to show some curiosity about what they’d be learning today, which was good. Curiosity and interest often went hand in hand with one another. She smiled and returned his greeting, ”Good morning, Mr. Hadley-Nairne.”
SPOILER!!: Maddie
Miss Kemp arrived with the usual pep in her step that Celestia had come to expect from the young Hufflepuff. Celestia gave her a warm smile that only spread wider across her face as the girl complimented her classroom. ”Good morning, Miss Kemp, and thank you,” she replied cheerfully. It was always nice to have her efforts be appreciated, and she had tried to bring the holiday into today’s lesson to make it more “fun” -- so these compliments from some of the students were a great start!
SPOILER!!: Chloe
Celestia was pleased to note that the next student to enter her classroom looked like she was in a good mood as well. She flashed the girl her usual warm smile and replied, ”Good morning, Miss Kettleburn.” Celestia’s own mood was buoyed a bit as Miss Kettleburn began unpacking her supplies -- so many of her students were prepared for class today! It was still early in the term, of course, but this was a morning lesson all the same, and Celestia had come to expect many sleepy starts from the class at large.
SPOILER!!: Emmalyn
Celestia noticed that the Hufflepuff second year was not quite as early to class as she usually was, but this was such a minor attendance change when compared with some of her classmates that it was not terribly concerning. Celestia beamed at the young girl and replied, "Good morning, Miss Walsh, and thank you!" Like with previous students who had commented, Celestia was pleased that the Hufflepuff had liked the pumpkins. Kids did better spellwork when they were favorably engaged in the subject, after all.
SPOILER!!: Skylar
Celestia had gone back to her depressingly large pile of essays after she'd greeted Miss Walsh when she noticed the arrival of the Slytherin Quidditch Captain. She had been quite involved in the Gryffindor-Slytherin friendly rivalry as a student, but she would not stoop to THAT much unprofessional-ism now. Canceling homework on weeks when the Gryffindor team played and showing overt support for her House at matches was the farthest that Celestia was willing to take her favoritism House spirit. She flashed the seventh year a smile and returned her greeting warmly: "Good morning, Miss Diggory. I do hope that tryouts have gone well for you this year." It was the same polite comment that she'd given Miss Macindoe and Celestia felt a small constriction in her chest at the concession this time too. Dear Merlin, she'd have to learn to be more supportive of her students on other Houses' Quidditch teams... She wanted them all to succeed in her class and in life, of course, but not at beating Gryffindor on the Quidditch pitch. Hopefully Mr. Botros would ensure that that wouldn't happen.
Once most of the class was seated and the bell had sounded throughout the castle, Celestia used her wand to shut the door as usual. However, she was careful to close the door quietly -- which was not usual for her, as she liked to start lessons off with literal bangs. The reason for this improved noise level was simple: Celestia was not expending her normal amount of effort on the simple spell, because she positively dreaded how this lesson must begin. She couldn’t see a good way to avoid the discussion if the rest of the lesson was to proceed smoothly, so she heaved a quiet sigh and turned around to face the class. If she was being perfectly honest with herself, this clarification needed to be made based on some of the analyses she’d read in the students’ essays that she’d been marking before the start of class. It was obvious that this fairly basic concept was still murky for some students; that was to be expected from first years, of course, but perhaps she had never explained this concept well enough for some of the older students… Celestia sighed again and shifted the pile of parchment on her desk until an unmarked essay was on the top of the pile -- in case one of the students decided to come up to her desk for whatever reason.
”Good morning, class, Celestia began with an attempt at her usual warm smile. ”Before we get into the meat of today’s lecture, I would like to quickly discuss a simple but fundamental distinction in your study of magic. Who can tell me one of the differences between a charm and a Transfiguration spell? Is there any overlap? For our older students, what has been the most useful spell you have learned in your Transfiguration classes to date?”
Yes, Celestia knew that these questions were desperately dull. This discussion was primarily the result of teaching students in all years at the same time, but that aspect of life was as unavoidable as the coming discussion. It was still the beginning of the year, and her younger students needed to understand this distinction for the lesson to move forward without protests. She was hoping for some insight from her older students to liven the beginning of the day up, if she was being honest.
OOC: Thanks so much for coming! I know these are pretty easy questions, but Celestia is trying to make a point here, so please bear with us. Feel free to have your student answer all three questions (if they’re above 1st year), or only one or two of them. You have 24 hours to get your answers in. We’ll be moving on to the mini activity at 12 AM CDT on May 15.
Quinn arched an eyebrow at Professor Grimsbane. They had been attending classes here for over a month now. Did people really not know the difference between charms and transfiguration by now? She glanced around at her classmates and, alright, yeah. It was entirely believable that some, or perhaps even most, didn't know the difference yet. Sad, isn't it?
To Quinn, however, the questions were insultingly easy. Too easy to even warrant the energy to actually answer. Charms changed the properties of a thing, such our ties changing color to match our houses as soon as we're sorted into them. Charms also produced specific effects, like levitating something in the air. Charms were used to give brooms the power of flight.
Transfiguration on the other hand, changed a thing into something else. A matchstick into a needle. A rodent into a goblet that Quinn would never actually trust drinking out of. Charms only altered the properties and characteristics of a thing. Transfiguration altered the thing itself.
She supposed there could be an overlap between the two. Magic wasn't always clear cut. However, only a month into her first year, Quinn had no examples of a possible overlap to give. Not that she'd have given it outloud if she had.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy thought about Professor Grimsbane's questions as she carefully raised her hand and answered. "I think Transfiguration spells focus on form whereas Charm spells focus on function. I'm not sure if it was useful but I did enjoy the Transfiguration spell that I learnt during I think last term's lesson where we turned pins into little house flags and hedgehogs into pincushions."
"Hey, Greyvson," he replied to Beth as she plopped in between him and Quinn, both girls getting a smile from him before professor Grimsbane closed the door and announced the beginning of the lesson.
Difference between a charm and a transfiguration spell? His hand went up hesitantly. "Transfiguration spells focus on... changing the form of something that already exists?" There was something off about his answer, though. "Although they also conjure things..." he trailed off, sinking lower in his seat to make himself less visible. What did charms do, then? Didn't they make sparks shoot out of their wands? Couldn't that be called conjuring, too?
…wait, hadn’t they talked about this in the magical theory class like last week? Beth looked around and listened to the one or two answers she had heard so far. Raising her hand Beth patiently (impatiently, lets be honest) waited to be called upon.
”Professor Grimsbane?” she nearly asked, her name instead of speaking in confidence as she clearly should have. ”According to the year one magical theory class I’m in…charms and transfigurations spells differ in the fact that the main purpose for a charm is to add properties to an object or a creature – whereas transfigurations aims to change and alter the object or creature” she paused for a second gulping, she looked around before adding ”it…is also good to note, I think, that transfigurations can also contain mathematical formulas…like the one you taught us in the first week?” she smiled to herself more than anyone else.
Yep – she’d even remembered that math problem....wait, conjuring things? But wasn't that something in whats-his-face's laws? Honestly, she didn't care, she was just glad she had remembered that there was math involved.

Reason: its supposed to say concentration
Kye looked around as the door was shut and she began to feel a little anxiety... What the heck? Professor Grimsbane never closed the door quietly. What was wrong?? As her internal questions were answered, Kye furrowed her brow. People... didn't... know the difference? Wasn't that elementary? Of course it made sense that a first year or two would have missed some of the concept, but apparently it was wide-spread enough to have part of a lesson on it? Maybe next year, the professor should start talking about that like, first day... Not that Kye would be around to see how that played out.
Kye had risen her hand to answer, if only to show that she was not one of the ones who did not know the difference, but she had to hand it to Daisy for her short, sweet explanation. That's really what it was: function to form. "I like Daisy's way of putting it. It's the altering of something's function versus the altering of something's form. For instance, charming something to fly or actually giving it wings." Hmm, the most useful spell? Kye giggled a little before responding. "Well, especially from the first couple of years, I'd say Reparifarge has been a good one to keep in the back pocket. After creating our own outfits for Professor Stewart last year though, I've been liking Multicorfors. I assume that's also what is used on our robes once we are Sorted?" This was slightly posed as a question, as to invite the professor to correct her if she was wrong.

"I should be fine, as long as we're not carving them or anything," Ronan replied. He was glad that the option to avoid working with them was available, as he didn't like depending on potions. Way too easy to be tampered with (as he often did with his own in potions class, partially to prove it could be done and partially to annoy Professor Noble) and he didn't want to go out like that.
Wait, no bang of the door? Uh oh, that wasn't good. And the question, wasn't that something they'd already covered? Hmm. "Charms usually focus on what the function of an object is, while Transfiguration focuses on what an object actually is." A very fine distinction to be sure. As for useful spells he had learned in Transfiguration, he actually couldn't think of any. He would really much rather borrow something from someone than Transfigure it from something else. Not that he would admit that here. Instead, he kept silent.

...... was Bel imagining things? She was probably imagining things. Half the time when people had a tone she couldn't really properly tell because accents were a thing that got in the way and her ears were still not particularly attuned to all the different ones that you got in the UK, but there was a little something that made her tilt her head.
.... nah it was probably nothing.
"Yep, pretty bonza, professor! We had a blast!" And that was the focus for Bel anyways. She wanted everyone who had tried out to have a great time, and not be discouraged even if they didn't make the team. And she wanted the team to be connected and really feel that team vibe. It was supposed to be fun and not overly serious in her eyes, and she wanted everyone to feel like they could give it a go. "Thanks for asking."

Aaaand they were starting class. Bel was a bit surprised at the question, being a basic one, but she also didn't mind because this one was one she felt good about answering. Oh and more than one question. She thought about her answer and put her hand up, wanting to make a good go of it.
"Professor, Transfiguration spells change what something fundamentally is, that's why those spells are way harder than charms, because charms can change how things behave or even how they appear, but underneath it all the charmed thing is still what it originally was." She tried, in earnest.
"And... um there's overlap for sure but its partly I think because we sometimes categorize things based on what they look like, even if its not what they actually are? Um, like aguamenti? Like in theory it looks like a pure conjuring spell, but back home I was taught that it actually is a charm because its just taking existing water vapour out of the air and making it into a jet of water, and not creating the water out of nothing, but that you can also actually conjure it out of nothing - like if you're somewhere where the air is really really dry, and its a lot harder if you do that, because then its becomes transfiguration because you're conjuring it instead of just charming existing water vapour to behave a certain way." Well that was what she had been taught. And she'd experienced it both ways too, because there were some super dry places in the outback in Australia, and they sometimes had had school trips there... As for the last question........ Bel's hand went down a bit and then back up.
"Honestly, professor, I'm not sure what has been most useful to learn so far.... but I am looking forward to learning switching spells. I think it'd be a useful way to get changed in a hurry... though I heard its pretty hard to do that and keep your clothes on properly." Arms and legs in the right places and all that. Which could be embarrassing. But still a useful thing that she was looking forward to learning.

To some extent, the Prefect was listening in. Should something arise that could actually catch and keep her attention, she would like to be able to jump on it quickly. Her mind was a terrible thing when it was under stimulated and with very little and specific exception, that was all it'd been lately.
Jessa folded her arms across the table, resting her chin down lightly with a soft sigh of her own at the woman's question. By now, she must have answered it a dozen times. Was this what growing up at Hogwarts was like? Becoming more and more familiar with the same patterns until those patterns no longer held the same appeal? If it was, then it sucked. Graduation wasn't nearly as daunting an idea as it was a few years ago.
Rather than repeat the basic concept of what the others had explained, Jessa trained her gaze on the window. There wasn't that much to look at, but she wasn't necessarily looking.
Somewhere along the line of the discussion, her mind had wandered off on its own little stroll of sorts. Ideas of new experiments, information about her old, the things she'd need to get done before the day ended, those were the things that occupied her mind.
What had first become the faint murmurs of her classmates answering all about her quickly became an almost silence. If you asked her what was said, she could no longer tell you. It wouldn't be too long before her mind then indeed the rest of her became restless.

Derf was still setting his desk up as the discussion began - inkwell, quill, textbook, parchment - and, well, he wasn't all that sure that he had too much more to add to things. At the most basic level, the difference in theory was already out there. A charm does not fundamentally alter the properties of the subject of the spell, but adds, or changes, properties. Turning a cat into a cauldron would be a spell, whereas making a cauldron dance or change color would be a charm. Change in what the object is versus what the object does. And, well, yeah...there was a grey area when it came to the two.
And then, you know, there were the classifications of enchantments and jinxes and hexes and curses too. Plenty of grey area there as well since, well, curses were Dark charms, yeah? And then some jinxes and hexes made the victim grow antlers or pig tails or other things, altering the person's shape and, well, that was a transfiguration...right?
As to the second question, well, Derf was a bit too preoccupied thinking to answer that as well. Though he would haves struggled to come up with one spell. The list of spells he wanted to perform correctly was much longer, you see.

Vivian Fairfield was here, definitely was. Perhaps today just wasn't a good day for her and it felt like she had woken up at the wrong side of the bed. She had stayed up late last night to do curfew patrol, and caffeine was the only thing keeping her awake at the moment. But hey, she wasn't tardy or absent in today's lesson. Hooray?

For our older students, what has been the most useful spell you have learned in your Transfiguration classes to date?”
She was also going to pretend that she didn't have to answer the first question. What was the difference of a charm and transfiguration? Well, besides the spelling, a whole lot. She just wasn't in the mood to address the question today. Sorry, Professor.
The most useful spell she has ever learned? Vivian easily knew that it would be Reparifarge because she wasn't the best in terms of Transfiguration and she had made mistakes before as well, but Kye had already beaten her to it first. Oh well, there were a lot more that were just as useful. "Human transfiguration seems to be one of the most useful lessons we've had, Professor." Well, for seventh years, at least. It was a more advanced branch of Transfiguration, after all. "It can be used to suit the environment or as a form of disguise." And that was cool, okay?

Of course Faith was paying attention to the lecture. One hundred percent present. The words that were coming out of her mouth were absolutely going into the brain of this here Gryffindor fifth year. Uh huh. Completely and totally. Except they were registering in the "lullaby" section of her mental library. Which really wasn't her fault, she'd barely been able to sleep last night because Zoryn insisted on kneeing her in the kidney every time she was about to fall asleep and now she was suffering.
Yes, an absolute pile of suffering she was, nodding off every two minutes or so.
Oh, a question?
"Transfiguration transfigurates and charms charm," she yawned, before getting slightly more comfortable in the uncomfortable seat and rubbing her eyes. "M'not so good at transfiguration, so I don't really use it so much. Sorry prof'ssor."
It had taken Lydia a little while to get used to the way Professor Grimsbane adored opening and slamming her classroom door with a bang, but after a month of classes with her she would finally no longer jump every time it happened. Now Lydia sat quietly and attentively at her desk, not too far away from some of her fellow first years like Ewan, Beth, and Rylee's little brother Reese.
Lydia pondered the professor's question. She'd only been taking Transfiguration for a little over a month. And before coming to Hogwarts she'd never even known about magic. As a result she often felt like she was at a disadvantage here, like she was playing catch up while some of her peers who'd been born into the wizarding world already knew certain things. However, just by comparing the two, Lydia thought she knew the answer to the questions, at least the one about the difference between a charm and a transfiguration spell. Charms seemed to only change an aspect of a thing or produce a certain effect. Wingardium Leviosa levitated objects. That was a charm, but it didn't transform those objects into something else. That would be transfiguration. Transfiguration seemed to completely transform an object, changing not just its properties, but its entire configuration and makeup.
Lydia remained quiet though. She wasn't entirely certain, and she didn't want to risk sounding like an idiot in front of her peers. Besides, it seemed like Professor Grimsbane was directing her question mainly to the older students. Phew, at least the professor didn't expect first years like herself to be experts at this already.

Obviously, considering that she was a seventh year, Harriet knew the difference between charms and spells of transfiguration. She decided though, to remain quiet in that particular discussion. A lot of her fellow students had talked, and given their opinions, and she didn't really feel that she could add anything new to the conversation. Hattie didn't really want to repeat something that someone else had said, so she just remained quiet. She wrote a few notes, but that was it. She did though, think of the second question. About the most useful spell of transfiguration she had learnt so far. She'd had a lot of transfiguration lessons, so she did have a lot of think about. She found a lot of the spells useful, so it was kind of hard.
She did eventually come to a decision though, and raised her hand. "I have found Scribblifors quite useful, especially when I suddenly break a quill, and don't have a spare. It's pretty good, especially when I'm doing homework and want to keep writing without having to go hunt for a new quill"

Oh, so they were delving right into theory, which was not something that Ari usually looked forward to in practical magic classes like Transfigurations. She couldn't wait to just whip out her wand and start turning cats into cauldrons. If only she could dodge the tedious Q-and-A part of the class and just jump right into the fun part...
Ari didn't want to think about the question. What difference would it really make if she couldn't tell the difference between a charm and a transfiguration spell? Well, she knew the general difference between the two, but Ari found it difficult to explain the concept using linguistic terms. It was usually just... intuition, to be completely honest.
"Well, I don't know the official answer to that question..." Ari began slowly, hoping that her contribution would speed up the discussion and move forward toward the practical portion. "But in my experiences so far, I feel that transfiguration usually involves changing something's appearance. But a charm just kinda adds a... a..." Ari hesitated as she tried to search in her mind for the most fitting terminology. "...a flare." Was that the right word for it? Whatever.

Just a few things managed to grasp her attention more so than the pumpkins that were around the room right now. Like Reese entering the room and sitting with his friends for instance was one of them. Beth saying 'hello' to her which earned the girl a small grin in return and Ewan taking the seat beside her. He happened to get a grin as well. Dorian's questions earned a quick shrug of her shoulders though. She really didn't know what they would be learning today.
Rylee turned her attention on the professor as the lesson seemed to be starting. The were talking about the difference between charms and transfiguration. Charms added properties to an object or creature while transfiguration focused on altering the appearance of an object. There was also several different branches of transfiguration and sub branches as well. Rather than raise her hand and give this answer the second year picked up her purple self inking quill and begin writing this all down along with what her fellow peers were all saying.

She stared blankly at her parchment, having no clue what to say. After a few of the students answered the questions, she jotted down notes as quickly as she could, but she was still not fully sure what the difference was. She made a note to ask Bel later on if she was still confused after Professor Grimsbane's lesson.
She was following that charms seemed to be what was used to just change the behavior of something, and transfiguration changed the thing itself. But, she didn't know how or why they were different. They were all spells to her, none of which she was good at.
“Yes! Thanks Professor!” He couldn’t help it! Anything muggle always made him beam; it reminded him of home. Sometimes, being so far away from home, it always made him forget that there were things going on outside this little bubble of a castle.
Catching Rylee’s small grin, he winked back at her, quickly pulling the same goofy cockeyed grin he pulled at the great hall the other day! Holding it for a second so no one else caught it, he rearranged it back to his usual monkey smile.
Turning now, he considered Professor Grimsbane for a moment before finally listening to the other kids answers. In all honesty, he could have answered the first question, the difference between transfiguration and charms but the other children had answered it so well, he didn’t really see any point in repeating what they’d said. Carefully, he got out his quill and parchment and made some notes, interpreting the other children’s answers in his own words.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Dorian was blessed with remembering faces. He was not, however, blessed with remembering names with faces so when Ewan sat down and greeted him he simply said a "Hey" back and gave a quick smile. He was about to say that he was fine when class started so he made his thumb and index finger in to a circle to form an OK sign with his hands and turned to look in front.
"Transfiguration and Charms are the same on how they are approached" he said after raising his hand. "Both require concentration, precies wand work and pronunciation however, Transfiguration is concidered more difficult because you have to change a thing completely rather than alter it like... You can't turn a table in to a sheep with any Charm....at least not that i know of" he lowered his hand and leaned to grab his school bag to grab out his notebook that he had forgotten earlier. Can't have a class without making notes.
