Default Potions Lesson #2

Although laid out in the usual format, the classroom looked unusually sparse today. The absolute minimum necessary was out on the workbenches, only a single burner and tripod per place. And that included Noble’s own demonstration area, which had none of the usual paperwork or books. A solitary piece of paper held his lesson plan, with a pencil to check things off as they did them. On the side bench, the only hint that they might be brewing today was a small black bucket, the size a child might take to the beach to build sandcastles with, and a couple of covered trays - presumably containing ingredients or equipment.

The Potions Professor is stood at the back of the classroom, undoing the cuffs of his twilight blue robes and rolling up his sleeves to nearer three-quarter length. There’s a contemplative look on Noble's face, as if he’s lost in thought.

Lesson progression:
Greetings and first question
Answers and getting ready to brew
Cleaning your cauldron and first steps
Adding the rosemary, murtlap, honeywater and tea tree oil
Adding the dittany, wiggentree bark, salamander blood, silver powder, and boom berry juice

SPOILER!!: Emmalyn
Quote:
Birchwoodmom;12336306]"Hey, Isa" She greeted with a whispered, yet excited voice. It was always nice to sit next to a friend, especially in a class where she may need to team up or ask for help.

At Professor Nobles clap, she quickly picked up her quill and readied herself to take notes. Then her stomach dropped at his next words. They were continuing with the theme of the flesh eating hex. It had been a rather difficult lesson and she wasn't too keen on furthering the topic.

She slowly raised her hand and waited her turn "Sir, the hex slowly eats away your skin. It would be quite painful and the spell to stop it is hard." She shuddered at the thought. "Dragons blood may be an ingredient in the ointment. It has healing properties." She was having trouble thinking of other appropriate ingredients off the top of her head and decided to just listen to the other students answers, writing them down as they were given. Right or wrong, she would be able to scratch off any that weren't supposed to be there and add what was as the class continued on.

He moved to the front of his desk as they thought about the question, hands in the outer pockets of his robes. Hopefully Hirsch had done his job, otherwise this would be a much tougher lesson to teach indeed. Emmalyn’s answer seemed to suggest the Defence Against the Dark Arts instructor had done an adequate job though, and Noble nodded. “Correct. Eats is a good term, though it doesn’t stop at skin.” And her hypothesis wasn’t bad…although dragon’s blood wasn’t actually in this potion. “It can aid in healing, yes. But it’s not dragon’s blood that fulfils that role here…rather, one of its distant cousins. We’ll be using salamander blood.”

SPOILER!!: Ronan
Quote:
lazykitty;12336309]He remembered that lesson (as if one could forget getting rope burns that quickly), and wasn't quite surprised that this was potions lesson would be focused on the accompanying ointment. Actually, he appreciated it, because it was another thing that could be useful in his future career, in case a victim of the flesh-eating curse couldn't be gotten to St. Mungo's in time even with Modero.

"It acts much like a flesh-eating virus, basically eating the victim from the inside out. That said, I bet the ointment has Essence of Dittany in it, since it causes fresh skin to grow over a wound," was Ronan's flat-toned response.

And there was nothing wrong with his Gryffindoring abilities, thank you.

Okay…maybe Hirsch hadn’t gotten the point across. Noble groaned. “More like outside in,” he said, folding his arms across his chest. “It starts growing from the point of contact the hex makes with the skin.” Which would obviously be on the outside. However, the Head Boy’s ingredient suggestion was decent. “Dittany does heal the skin, correct. Although we’ll be using fresh dittany today, not just the essence.”
SPOILER!!: Daisy
Quote:
Ginevra;12336310]Daisy was trying to forget that lesson even though she sat out the activity because of traumatic reasons. She thought about potential ingredients before raising her hand and answering, "Maybe Murtlap Essence could help since it is used to treat wounds."

His gaze now moved to the young Hufflepuff, and Noble gave a slight nod. “Murtlap, yes. But again, not the essence. We’ll be using pickled murtlap tentacles ” Such a damaging hex required a potent healer – watered down ingredients just wouldn’t cut it here.

SPOILER!!: Daehyun
Quote:
debpetrisor;12336328]Oh, how exciting was this? Daehyun was, in fact, interested in magical remedies, so this lesson would be most helpful! Not that he planned on needing this particular ointment, but it was good to keep in mind, anyway!

Raising his hand, he said, "Could there be snake fangs, professor?" They had strengthening properties, and he knew they were used in the cure for boils... and really, boils did kind of eat away your flesh if they were of a worse degree.

A fleeting smirk crossed Noble’s lips, before disappearing. “There could be…but unfortunately, there isn’t.” No fangs of any sort to be found.

SPOILER!!: Jessa
Quote:
DaniDiNardo;12336333]Where she previously may have taken offence to the man’s gruff tone, Jessa simply marked her spot on the page then put the book into her bag. There was no need for the stern warning and no fear he may have needed to repeat himself because she had no intention of carrying on her reading here. Suffice to say the Ravenclaw had learned which classes and which Professors were less vigilant and cared less if she paid attention.

She turned in her seat, facing forward despite Professor Noble remaining at the back. When he was ready he would move to the front but if he didn’t it wasn’t an issue either.

Chin resting in her palm, Jessa allowed her mind a small space to wander while she waited for the lesson to begin but when it did, it had all her attention—for now. The Sixth Year had been baited enough times to be cautious about her optimism. Hog warts had a way of setting her up for disappointment.

While she listened, though, she did find a question growing in the back of her mind. Rather than answer the Professor’s, she posed her own. “Will the potion work even on injuries that weren’t necessarily caused by a hex or some other flesh eating disease.” If so then it could prove useful.

If he was surprised she put it away first time, he didn’t show it. But she did earn herself an eyeroll for completely ignoring his question and posing one of her own. He had a horrible feeling about why she was asking too, and his brow furrowed. “It depends on the nature of the damage. If you want, we can talk about it more outside of class.” It wasn’t a topic he particularly wanted to go into right now.

SPOILER!!: Patrick
Quote:
siriusblackliveson;12336335]Patrick had sat down at the table in the middle hoping to avoid being noticed too much during the class, he wasn't doing so hot in Potions. It was one of his lesser subjects at this point, but he wanted to keep showing up. Maybe eventually he would become a great potions master, or maybe he would just be off in his own little world. He wasn't exactly sure.

He looked around the classroom as the other students were asking questions and answering Professor Nobel's question. He couldn't pull any ingredients that would lend themselves to help cure a hex. Well, there goes getting better at potions. Instead he wrote down every single suggestion from his classmates.

He didn’t mind quiet students, as long as they were concentrating. So as long as Patrick wasn’t just doodling, then Noble was satisfied.

SPOILER!!: Rylee
Quote:
Kolyander;12336338]Rylee had been on time and had given her usual warm greeting to the professor upon her arrival right before sitting at her usual workstation, front and center. It only took the tween a matter of seconds once her hum had it's place on her seat to notice the lack of materials at each workstation. Curious. It didn't appear that they would be needing all that much for towards lesson... maybe?

As Noble began the lesson she picked up her quill to start taking notes. They were going to be making the potion Hirsch told them about. She rather enjoyed when two different lessons could go hand-in-hand. Rylee raised her hand setting her quill down for just a moment. "When you're hit with the hex the area turns reddish-purple and it spreads outward over the skin as the flesh is eaten away." She crinkled her nose just a little bit in displeasure. It was really a very terrible way to die. "Fluxweed has healing properties so maybe we can use that." Several things had actually come to mind that she knew contained healing properties but she went with the most logical one first.

Noble nodded. “The skin does change colour where the hex is active, yes. That can help us target where to heal, although the process is by no means quick.” Even with the ointment, it could take days for the skin to recover – and it never did so fully. “Fluxweed is good for potions involving flux or change. Here were doing regeneration, which is a little different.” So no, it wasn’t in the ointment.

SPOILER!!: Nettie
Quote:
Lissy Longbottom;12336360]Of course Nettie remembered the spell that Hirsch had taught them about last week - but she wasn't sure how that could help clue her in to the ingredients in the potion. She thought for a bit, listening to other answers before an idea popped in her head. She raised her hand quickly.

"Could aloe be an ingredient?" she suggested. It wasn't a MAGICAL ingredient, but still a good thing to have if you were worried about skin stuff. "I know it helps soothe skin when you get a sunburn, could it maybe he used in a similar way in the potion to help flesh eaten skin heal?" she suggested.

Worth a shot, right?

Noble saw that hand go shooting up, although he shook his head at the answer. The reasoning was sensible enough, but the hex was just too much for aloe to deal with. “Not in this potion, no. But you’re right, it can often be found in healing potions concerning burns.”

SPOILER!!: Junia
Quote:
TakemetotheBurrow;12336382]Huh, that was convienient. Junia had been wondering about that ointment and here they were making it. She sat up straighter in her chair, interest piqued. She was officially excited.

"What about billywig sting slime, professor? It's meant to have curative properties." And that certainly couldn't hurt.

Noble had noticed the shift in posture after announcing the topic, and wasn’t at all surprised by her well thought out answer. “That’s a very good answer, Junia…and it’s one of the key ingredients in the potion that this ointment was initially derived from: the Wiggenweld potion. Here though, the functionality of the billywig slime has been replaced by another species of insect…which I’ll get to shortly.” Unless, of course, anyone got there first.

SPOILER!!: Chloe
Quote:
Cassirin;12336389]The professor was going to show them a very cool potion that counteracted an equally cool (but very gross) spell. What in the world did they need to go and eat someone's skin away for? People needed their skin. It kept all their insides... on the inside. Where they belonged.

She wasn't totally sure about the spell, although, something the Head Boy said struck her as funny. "Eats them from the inside out? Doesn't it technically eat them from the outside... in? SKIN first?" She knew what he meant, but it sounded so funny. And what could go in the potion to make skin grow back? "What about vitamin A, sir? Or I mean, fish oil or something's liver... things rich in vitamin A. I think that's good for helping your cells regenerate."

There was a rare hint of amusement on Noble’s face at Chloe’s response to the Head Boy, and he nodded. “It does.” As for her answer, the Potions Professor looked slightly impressed. “That would be one reason why we’re using fresh dittany today, and not the essence. It’s not the highest source of vitamin A,” not like the liver she’d suggested, “but it does give the potion a boost.”

SPOILER!!:
Quote:
Hey Ju;12336438]Anna wasn't the biggest fan of Potions and she was also not the biggest fan of the theory part of any lesson, so she was currently distracting herself by simply holding the quill she was supposed to be using to take notes and looking at its feathery bit as she gently moved it.

She kept quiet because she didn't know the answer and to be honest she was also not paying attention. Her quill was clearly a lot more interesting than... what Potion were they going to brew that day again? Eh, didn't matter. Her quill was still more interesting.

Noble’s gaze fell over the classroom now, waiting to see if anyone else had ideas to add. No hands went up, but his did spy a few distracted students. “Either put that quill to parchment, Anna, or put it away.” He couldn’t be doing with distracted fiddling, especially not today.

That said, and the classroom still silent, he moved back towards the board. “As I mentioned, the flesh-regeneration ointment is a close relative of the Wiggenweld potion, with a few ingredient substitutions to allow for a more potent and topical application.” He started writing the list of ingredients on the board, so they could compare. “I’m not going to go through them all, but I want to highlight key two changes: blue-bottle fly larvae, for billy-wig sting slime, and powdered silver for the unicorn horn.” He finished writing up the ingredient list, and now strode down the side of the classroom to pick up the black bucket.

With a glint of a smile, Noble tilted the bucket and showed them the contents, most definitely live and wriggling. “You’d probably more commonly think of these as maggots, but blue-bottle fly larvae are important in healing for what’s known as maggot therapy. They’re particularly good at eating dead flesh, and only dead flesh.” So hopefully it was obvious why they might be an ingredient. “The powdered silver helps combat dark magic, but also has antimicrobial properties, so helps keep the wound clean.” Hopefully they weren’t too grossed out by the maggots, and were still following. The next bit was important. “Keeping things sterile is super important in this potion, as a patient suffering from the flesh-eating hex will have lots of open wounds susceptible to infection. We don’t want to add to that risk, so today we’ll be practicing aseptic technique.”

And that started now. “Before we start: tie your hair up, roll sleeves up, wash your hands thoroughly and wipe your bench down with ethanol from one of the bottles in the middle back cupboard. Only once you’ve done all that should you come collect ingredients.” They couldn’t stop all microbes from entering their work, but they could at least actively minimise the chances of contamination.

Well...what were they all waiting for? "You may begin."

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Did she want to willingly engage in discussion with Professor Noble outside of times she was required to be around him? Not really. It’d been over a year but the image etched into her mind of him dismantling her lab was as fresh as if it was happening in that very moment. It wasn’t so much a grudge as.....the trauma that came with his scrutinising gaze and the way they seemed to suggest he was still looking for anything else he could take from her.

But it made the topic no less interesting and while she could simply test this out herself to get answers....it would mean serious injury to her test subjects and she wasn’t game for that, not with the living or the undead ones. She was another viable option but with everything else....even she knew it was a bad idea—one that would not easily be explained away.

“Maybe. We could meet in the Great Hall before dinner.” That way, if she felt need for an escape, the food arriving soon after would be the perfect excuse.

It was a discomfort she would accept, especially after the man mentioned it fighting off dark magic. It was sounding more and more attractive with each additional statement.

If the wiggling larvae were meant to get a reaction, they didn’t. In her eyes they were just another potion ingredient. Very effective ones in this case.

With her hair already pulled up, Jessa rolled up her sleeves then went to get one of the bottles of ethanol. Meticulously....she charmed a piece of cloth, poured some ethanol on it and had it scour along her bench until she felt satisfied. That done, she ended the charm then went to get her hands washed. The pipes were charmed on then off to prevent her touching them and contaminating her now clean hands.

Okay, she was ready. Jessa headed up and began grabbing the ingredients she would need. “How will we test these, Professor?”

Chloe was so pleased that the professor approved of her answer, and she preened a little in her seat as he moved on with the lesson. As instructed, Chloe tucked her braid inside her collar, rolled up her sleeves, and checked for any loose hanging fabrice, before turning her attention to cleaning her work station. It was sort of Muggle to wipe it down by hand with a chemical, but the professor had to have some sort of method to his madness.

And now for her ingredients! There were so many, and each needed to go into a container that Chloe made sure to also clean thoroughly. "Professor? Why is it better to clean with the ethanol than to use a spell like Scourgify? Can't you magically get something super clean?"

Thankful she had been somewhat correct, at least in the right direction, Emmalyn let a small grin appear on her face. Maybe the year was starting to turn around and she wanted to keep that momentum going. Her quill raced across her parchment, trying to keep up with all Professor Noble was saying. She didn't want to miss any notes about such an important ointment.

Once he had finished giving out the instructions and she had finished writing it all down, she began to roll up her sleeves and head over to wash her hands. Her hair, as usual, was already pulled back in a tight bun. The way she liked it for class so she wouldn't be tempted to mess with it when she was feeling anxious.

With her hands thoroughly clean, she returned to her station to wipe it down with the bottle of ethanol from the back cupboard. The smell made her eyes water and the cut on her right finger began to burn. She shook her hand to help relieve the burning sensation as she continued to wipe with her left hand. She wasn't going to complain or cause a scene for something as minor as her finger feeling like it was on fire.

With her station clean, and finger feeling less like lava had been poured all over it, she headed up to start gathering her ingredients. The list was long, so it took her a few trips to get it all back to her work station. She saved gathering the blue-bottle fly larvae and salamander blood for last. Both of which made her stomach turn. While she felt like she understood why the ingredients needed to be in the ointment, she still didn't like that she would be working with them.

So, he had mixed things up in his brain. That was no reason to groan at him. It could happen to anyone. But, thankfully he had been close on the ingredient. Just fresh dittany instead of the essence.

The moment the fly larvae were mentioned, Ronan knew what was coming, because duh and was able to prepare himself. He also felt a pang of sadness, one that he just barely managed to keep off his face. Though, if one was paying close enough attention, they would notice the slight slump of his shoulders (though its cause was completely separate from what was sure to be the larvae's eventual fate).

The mention of silver, however, made him think of chemistry, something that he wished was taught at Hogwarts. And of course, someone had to mention Scourgify, something that had him rolling his eyes. I mean, what was wrong with doing things the Muggle way once in a while? He didn't say anything though, simply rolling up his sleeves, fixing them to where they'd stay that way until he pulled back down again and washing his hands to just past his wrists. Once his hands were washed and dried, he got one of the bottles of ethanol from the indicated closet, opened it, held a clean cloth to the opening and poured a little onto it. Then, after closing the bottle, he used the cloth to thoroughly wipe down his bench. With that done, he gathered all of his ingredients, trying hard not to stare at the maggots, and returned to his bench.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy quickly wrote down the list of ingredients for the flesh-regeneration ointment.

She already had her hair done up as she always did during Potions lessons so she rolled up her sleeves and walked over to one of the washbasins and thoroughly washed her hands. Daisy then retrieved a bottle of ethanol from the cupboard, along with a clean cloth. Heading back to her station, Daisy carefully poured some ethanol on the cloth and secured the lid back on the bottle before wiping the bench down. She then used a Cleaning Charm to clean the used cloth because she didn't want the smell of ethanol affecting her in any way. Daisy placed the bottle of ethanol back in the cupboard and started to grab the required ingredients.

Once she had gathered all the necessary ingredients, Daisy patiently waited for the next set of instructions.

Daehyun was... beyond horrified.

Why were those larvae alive?!

... if one of the instructions told them to crush them to death, he was not going to do it. He could not do it. Why couldn't professor Noble bring them dead to the lesson?

Pushing those thoughts away for the moment with a shudder, he quickly scribbled down everything the professor told them about the ingredients, a small frown setting in between his brows. He was not going to murder larvae, if that was what the ointment required.

Now, to start off, he didn't know if he was supposed to do something about his hair, because he matter how much he pushed it back, it fell right back in his eyes, but instead he rolled his sleeves up neatly, and walked over to the sink to wash his hands thoroughly. Next, he picked a bottle of ethanol from the cupboard in the back and returned to his workbench to wipe it clean, silently wondering why couldn't they just use magic for it.

... there was no way he was questioning it aloud. Surely the professor had his reasons.

The last thing to do was to fetch all ingredients... he eyed the larvae weirdly... hoping they were just for entertainment...

Patrick scrawled out the ingredients nodding his head vigorously. He would have never guessed those would be something he would need for such a project. He was going to be sure that he was going to get this potion right even if he didn't know a single thing before hand.
Text Cut: notes
Ingredients:
500 ml of water
500 ml of horklump juice
5 drops flobberworm mucus
10 blue-bottle fly larvae
1 tbsp finely chopping rosemary
100g pickled murtlap tentacles
10 drops of honeywater
5 drops tea tree oil
3 leeches
2 cups of shredded dittany
3 inches of Wiggentree bark, grated
250 ml salamander blood
¼ teaspoon powdered silver
250 ml boom berry juice

With a smile on his face he began to get ready to gather his items. Step one: pull back hair, with a flip of his head he tried to flop his longer hair out of the way. He hated when he let it get like this, but then again he really did like waiting for his barber to do it. looks like step one is not going to happen.

Step two: rolling his sleeves up his forearms like he often did when he was sitting outside and it got too hot. Washing hands, he wished he could get points for that. His mama still made him sing happy birthday as he washed his hands, like she was afraid he would forget a spot. With a sigh, he grabbed the ethanol and wiped down the entire lab table. He figured He had done everything right considering he had followed the instructions to a T. Getting up he knew he would have to go gather all of his ingredients to actually brew the potion.

Healing ointment? Well between Hirsch and Noble they made it sound like they were going to be attacked by something flesh-eating by the end of the year. Which this was Hogwarts; there was all sorts of terrors that had happened during her six and a half years, so why not add flesh-eating-something to the list? Which of course had Skylar's mind churning, despite the fact that she was trying hard to be cognizant of that and had her not really in the focusing mood on the question being asked. Eh, her classmates had covered how the hex worked well enough and potion ingredients? She could think of a few, but upon half listening, her peers seemed to cover most of what she was going to say anyway. Except maybe tea tree oil; didn't that have like antimicrobial properties. And before she had the chance to think of or say something else, Noble was moving on and revealing the ingredients in today's potion.

Hair tied up, check. That was actually done when she walked in. As she rolled up her sleeves and started cleaning her work area with ethanol she glanced over at Chloe who inquired about use of ethanol versus a cleaning spell. Yes, good, question. Cleaning and eying the Professor, she watched him curiously for an answer, assuming it had something to do with ethanol disinfecting. But did that mean cleaning spells didn't disinfect?

Nettie smiled, happy that for once her hair was long enough to actually tie up in a tiny little ponytail at the base of her neck. Once that was secure, she rolled up her sleeves and went to get the ethanol and headed back to her station, giving it a good wipe down. She then went back to the sink and washed her hands, scrubbing really good and then making sure she dried them well before heading back.

Now to gather the ingredients. She looked at the board, loading up each item on her tray one by one before heading back to her station, waiting to start the potion.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Dorian placed his quill down after writing in his note book and listened carefully to the next step of instructions as the potion they were going to make was definitely not a friendly one with all the extra set of rules they had to follow. He wondered what would happen if the potions got contaminated yet did not want to be the one who made it happen...you know...

Since his hair was short, there was no reason for him to tie it up so he skipped this step and instead he started to roll up his uniform sleeves, making sure they were tucked in firmly. Then he got up and grabbed a bottle of....what was it again? Etha something. Whatever, he knew what he had to use and as he walked back to his seat he wiped his seat with the solution to clean it before bringing it back and he walked towards the water basin to clean his hands.

HOLISTIC ACTRESS {X O} EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

Sitting there Beth looked at the larvae and tipped her head at them. The blonde smirked slightly only truly because she had already pulled her hair up before class. It was how she always wore her hair to potions class, in two braids, but today. Today she’d gone as far as to twist those plaits into a bun.

”Professor?” she asked kindly, hand raised, ”is it possible for us to borrow the ethanol in the student lab after hours? If say, we were looking to make a fragrant perfume based potion?” wide eyed she was ready to learn and to get on with the creating of T H I N G S. Turing toward Daniel, she just raised an eyebrow. ”they’ll probably die when they touch the ethanol.” she figured that much, ethanol was one strong substance indeed.

People…muggle people even used it to power cars and other transportation methods. Giving her hair a pat she made sure no pieces were astray before rolling up. Her sleeves, washing her hands and taking a clean cloth she doused it in the ethanol before cleaning her bench, and grabbing another she cleaned her tools and then her cauldron alike. Everything was nice and clean see? She was a good cleaner. Thorough.

SPOILER!!: Jessa

Noble’s gaze lingered on Jessa, as if trying to read her thought process. He strongly suspected there was something more to her question. “Why don’t you stop by after your patrol later,” he posited. “We can talk as we head to the Hall for dinner.”

As for that follow up question? Noble’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I have my means. I will know whether or not you have been successful.” He felt no need to disclose how he would know, but he would.
SPOILER!!: Chloe

It was sort of Muggle to wipe it down by hand with a chemical, but the professor had to have some sort of method to his madness.

And now for her ingredients! There were so many, and each needed to go into a container that Chloe made sure to also clean thoroughly. "Professor? Why is it better to clean with the ethanol than to use a spell like Scourgify? Can't you magically get something super clean?"

That said, he surveyed the general business of the classroom, noting Chloe’s attention to detail as she manoeuvred around the classroom. He’d only asked for hair to be tied up, but her braid was safely tucked out of the way. It was a promising sign indeed…as was her question. “You can magically disinfect surfaces, for sure. However, it takes a great deal of concentration and intent to reliably and confidently purge the many micro-organisms living there.” Which, quite frankly, he didn’t trust them to achieve. “Ethanol is a much more efficient solution, in my opinion.” Simple was often the best.

SPOILER!!: Patrick

Text Cut: notes
Ingredients:
500 ml of water
500 ml of horklump juice
5 drops flobberworm mucus
10 blue-bottle fly larvae
1 tbsp finely chopping rosemary
100g pickled murtlap tentacles
10 drops of honeywater
5 drops tea tree oil
3 leeches
2 cups of shredded dittany
3 inches of Wiggentree bark, grated
250 ml salamander blood
¼ teaspoon powdered silver
250 ml boom berry juice

With a smile on his face he began to get ready to gather his items. Step one: pull back hair, with a flip of his head he tried to flop his longer hair out of the way. He hated when he let it get like this, but then again he really did like waiting for his barber to do it. looks like step one is not going to happen.

Step two: rolling his sleeves up his forearms like he often did when he was sitting outside and it got too hot. Washing hands, he wished he could get points for that. His mama still made him sing happy birthday as he washed his hands, like she was afraid he would forget a spot. With a sigh, he grabbed the ethanol and wiped down the entire lab table. He figured He had done everything right considering he had followed the instructions to a T. Getting up he knew he would have to go gather all of his ingredients to actually brew the potion.

Going on that less than effective hair flopping, here was quite the uncontrollable mop atop the third year’s head. Noble moved to open a drawer in his desk, and from within it, he produced a muggle elastic band – the type for stationery, not for hair. “I suggest you use this,” the Potions Master said, holding it out as strode over to the boy’s desk. “Safety and cleanliness is paramount in this classroom, not fashion.”

SPOILER!!: Anabeth

Noble looked up at the voice directed to him, nodding at Anabeth to show she had his attention. At her question, however, he became suspicious. A first year, wanting alcohol, for ‘after hours’? “You may use the ingredients in the potions laboratory during allotted opening hours,” he said clearly. “If you think it’ll take longer than that to brew, you may submit a special request.” He saw no need for a fragrance to be brewed outside of curfew by a first year. And he’d be keeping an eye on stocks.

It was probably best he didn’t catch what she’d said to Daehyan. But then something happened that threatened to cause him to retract that request. “I did NOT say use the ethanol to clean anything other than your work bench, Anabeth. Especially not your cauldron. Ethanol is highly flammable, and there are far safer, better, ways to clean utensils and the cauldron.” Which he’d had been planning to get to next. “Three points from Slytherin for not following directions. Use aguamenti to rinse out your cauldron, and dry it thoroughly with a warm air charm before continuing.”

It seemed like everyone else was doing well enough, although the maggots seemed to be giving pause. He caught Emmalyn, Ronan and Daehyun all giving them odd glances at various points. “They won’t bite!” came Noble’s gruff tones across the classroom. They had heard him say that they only ate dead flesh, right? His gaze moved over to some of the others now. Dorian was lagging a little behind, still needing to get his ingredients…Nettie looked to be on track, and hopefully his answer about the magical cleaning had satisfied Skylar. So…now was probably a good time to move on.

“We now need to clean our cauldrons. As I already told Anabeth,” he glanced over at the Slytherin, “Ethanol is not the way to do this. We first use scourgify, as normal, and then to sterilise it fully we will go around the inside of the cauldron with Incendio tria. We use tria as we want the hottest blue flames to kill off any potential pathogens. Make sure your cauldron is safely on your tripod before doing this step, and before even lighting a spark, that your ethanol is back away in the cupboard.” He demonstrated now, first giving his cauldron a thorough cleaning with scourgify, and then, with his cauldron on his tripod, slowly directed an incendio tria around the inside of the cauldron. “See how I’m aiming the flame inside, spiralling it to the centre?” He finished the spell, and now went to the side bench to pick up a wrapped plastic syringe in a packet. “This is commonly how sterile equipment is owled to labs, although it’s only sterile until you open it. You’ll be using them to measure your liquid ingredients.” They would get to knives and such in due course. “When your cauldron is clean, get yourself a syringe and add 500ml each of water and horklump juice to your cauldron and bring to the boil. Once there, add your five drops of flobberworm mucus followed by ten blue-bottle fly larvae one at a time.”

That said, he turned to the blackboard to write up the next steps. He'd get his potion started in due course.

Now that her finger no longer burned, she was much more excited to get on with the class. That was, until Professor Noble said spark and flame. She hadn’t had the best luck with flames and she quickly looked towards Derf, making sure he was at a safe distance. No need burning him again.

Before continuing, she made sure to take exact notes and that her ethanol was safely away in the cupboard. After both were double checked on, she placed her cauldron firmly on the tripod, giving it a little wiggle to test the stability, then performed scourgify to clean it as thoroughly as possible. Next was the part she was most worried about. Not only did she need to make the flame, she had to precisely direct the flame around the inside of the cauldron.

She eyed her neighbors, hoping they were far enough away to stay out of danger, and started the incendio tria around the inside of the cauldron. Much to her surprise, it was working. The hot blue flame circled the inside, burning up all pathogens in its path as it circled to the center. The fire part was over and she had not set anything or anyone on fire that wasn’t supposed to be.

With a lighter step, she went to collect her syringe and added the 500 ml of water and 500 ml of horklump juice to her freshly cleaned cauldron then brought it to a boil before adding the five drops of flobberworm mucus then ten blue-bottle fly larvae, one at a time. She cringed a bit at each blue-bottle larvae addition and was very happy once the last one had been added to the cauldron.

Get to work.

Right, he was getting right on that. Sleeves rolled up, Septimus got up and washed both hands and work table before retrieving the ingredients he had copied down from the bulletin board. Some horklump juice…three leeches… ten drops of honeywater…some powdered silver…and everything in between. The second year had just managed to get back to his workstation with everything he had gathered when Professor Noble was ready to move them on and start them on the brewing point of the lesson.

More cleaning first.

“Scourgify,” he cast first, familiar with that step at least. Then after making sure his cauldron was secure, added the second spell, his ethanol safe away. “Incendio tria!” the Ravenclaw slowly swooshing his wand tip around within his cauldron as the professor demonstrated himself. Septimus figured it was good enough after awhile and moved onto the first ingredients. First a syringe of water and then one of the horklump juice, both into the cauldron. Turning up the heat to boil the liquids, he waited until it was ready before adding five drops of flobberworm mucus. One…two…three…four…five. And finally ten blue-bottle fly larvae.

One…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…ten.

Rolling his eyes again, this time at Anabeth, the idiotic Slytherin who thought cleaning something they were going to PLACE ON A FIRE with ALCOHOL was a good idea, Ronan hurried to put the ethanol back in its cabinet, whispering "Idiot child," as he went by Anabeth. Because, really, who does that?

Back at his station, he scourgifyed his cauldron before nonverbally casting incendio tria, careful to aim his wand purely into his cauldron. He spiraled the flame towards the center, as Noble was showing them before canceling the spell, placing his cauldron on the burner and fetching a plastic syringe. Once he had the syringe, he carefully opened it with his fingers, measured out the water and added it to his cauldron. Following quickly behind the water, was the horklump juice and combination was left to boil.

Once the two liquids were at a rolling boil, Ronan added the five drops of flobberworm mucus using the syringe. And then it was the blue-bottle fly larvae's turn. And yes, he knew they didn't bite, thank you. His problem with them was very far removed from that or even the fact that they were alive. But he powered through, adding them one at a time, glad when the tenth one was dropped into the potion.

Ooh, a healing potion! Healing potions were a type of potion where Isa didn’t mind using animal parts in it because she viewed the health benefits as outweighing the harm to animals. It would be nice to look into healing potions that didn’t need animal parts in them though, and of course Isa would still only use any potion containing animal parts if she really needed it. Hmm, similar to wiggenweld potion with a few substitutions. Would this potion also serve to counter sleeping draught? How did the substituted ingredients serve to increase the potency of the potion? Isa listened as Professor Noble described the potion, taking notes on the ingredients and why they were being used. Oh, so these particular ingredients were better for cleaning the wound? Time to get to work. Isa had already tied her hair back as she usually did for potions. The sixth year rolled up her sleeves and washed her hands at the sink, then went to get a bottle of ethanol from the cupboard. Back at her workstation, Isa poured some ethanol onto a clean cloth and meticulously wiped down every inch of her work surface. Workbench clean, Isa returned her ethanol to the cupboard and went to collect all the necessary ingredients.

Okay, time to clean her cauldron. Isa set her cauldron securely on the tripod before beginning. She aimed her wand in her cauldron and focused on thoroughly cleaning it. ”Scourgify.” First the general clean, now for sterilization. ”Incendio tria.” Isa spiraled her wand inside the cauldron as the professor had demonstrated to fully sterilize her cauldron. The whole time she had a flame on her wand, Isa was very careful not to accidentally touch it.

Cauldron sufficiently clean, Isa picked up a sterile syringe to use for the next step. She drew up 500mL of water into the syringe, emptied the syringe into her cauldron, and cast scourgify on the syringe when she was done adding the water to avoid cross contamination with the other ingredients she would need the syringe for. Isa then repeated the process for 500mL of horklump juice. The potion needed to be brought to a rolling boil before moving on to the next step, so Isa adjusted the heat and waited until the mixture had come to a rolling boil. Then she carefully added five drops of flobberworm mucus followed by dropping in the ten blue-bottle fly larvae one by one. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. There, all done with the larvae.

See? It didn't hurt to ask questions, which lead to learning. No need for the scowls, Mr. Sassy Pants Head Boy. Chloe scooted her cauldron forward on her work station before returning her ethanol to the cupboard. She wouldn't have set a fire while it was so close, but the reminder sure didn't hurt. Once the ethanol was clear, it was safe to apply the spells to the cauldron.

"Scourgify." Chloe checked the inside, although it wasn't like she could see germs or anything. "Incendio tria," she spoke the incantation clearly, delighted with the bright blue super heated flame. It left a flare on her retinas as the flame lit up the interior of the cauldron in a spiraling sweeping motion.

Once she'd swept the entire cauldron, it was time for the first ingredients. A syringe of 500 mL of water, followed by one of the horklump juice. Chloe hesitated before filling it the second time, wondering if it needed to be cleaned in between uses. Welp, no helping it. She continued on, bringing up the heat on her cauldron to boil her mixture. This was the worst part, watching for each bubble, wondering when exactly it moved from simmering to boiling. Chloe held her dropper of mucus over the cauldron as she waited, with a larvae in the other hand, and the second there was a big enough bubble, Chloe counted out the droplets.

And now, good-bye larvae.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Sounded pretty dangerous to her. Like the perfect way to not have the right kind of distraction come to pull her away at the right time as needed.

Jessa paused a moment, openly considering the suggestion and taking her time in doing so. This was Hogwarts. Something was likely to happen anyway. Her chances of being able to find a reason to discontinue her conversation with the man was probably sufficiently high. Finally, she nodded. "Alright. Yeah. That works. I can stop by then."

No point dwelling on it, not when her mind was now running into an extremely svahdvwjafdjajcbsk state because of his next answer.

That was one of the reasons she and the man had never gotten along. Jessa liked answers as much as Professor Noble liked giving cryptic responses to avoid giving actual answers. It was likely a skill he'd honed throughout the years and it was honestly the most frustrating thing in life. HOW would he know? WHAT would he be testing it on? WHY couldn't he just answer the bloody question? Jessa grumbled as she non-verbally scourgify-ed her cauldron, naturally put off he'd decided to withhold such information.

The Ravenclaw secured her cauldron on the tripod then, again, non-verablly cast. This time, incendio tria. The young girl moved her wand all over, getting into the small spaces and ensuring she didn't miss even an inch. Only once she was sure she'd gotten rid of everything did she lower her wand to continue the steps laid out for them.

Jessa took a syringe and added 500ml of water to the cauldron before adding the 500ml of horklump juice. She ensured the fire was high enough then waited for it to come to a boil. That done, she added five drops of the flobberworm mucus before reaching for ten blue-bottle fly larvae and plopping them into her cauldron one by one.

SPOILER!!: Notes
Ingredients
  • 500 ml of water
  • 500 ml of horklump juice
  • 5 drops flobberworm mucus
  • 10 blue-bottle fly larvae
  • 1 tbsp finely chopping rosemary
  • 100g pickled murtlap tentacles
  • 10 drops of honeywater
  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  • 3 leeches
  • 2 cups of shredded dittany
  • 3 inches of Wiggentree bark, grated
  • 250 ml salamander blood
  • ¼ teaspoon powdered silver
  • 250 ml boom berry juice
Recipe

Remember to work with aseptic techniques throughout.
1. Clean your cauldron with scourgify, and then sterilise it using incendio tria
2. Add 500ml water and 500ml horklump juice and bring to a rolling boil
3. Add 5 drops of flobberworm mucus
4. Drop in the larvae one at a time

Maddie didn't know if it was just because she was getting older, or if the lessons truly were getting that much more disgusting. Either way, between flesh being eaten and maggots being used, her stomach was already turning. Regardless, she did her best not to let Noble catch on to that fact. He wasn't exactly the one to be nice about it.

Her long, blonde hair was already tied up, so the third year rolled up her sleeves and washed her hands. Once her work bench was all cleaned up, she quickly gathered the ingredients then returned to her work station. With her wand pointed toward her cauldron, she used Scourgify to clean it, then with her cauldron on the tripod, she followed that up with Incendio Tria. She aimed the flame toward the inside and spiraled it toward the center just as Noble had mentioned.

Once she finished the spell, she collected a syringe and filled it with 500mL of water then added the water to the cauldron. When that was complete, she measured out 500mL of the horklump juice and added it in, as well. Maddie's blue eyes flickered up toward the professor before promptly returning to watch the cauldron. Last time, she'd had to start all the way over. She just hoped this time wouldn't be the same. So far, so good.

Making sure the fire was set high enough, she waited until it came to a boil. When it did, she added the five drops of flobberworm mucus. One..two...three...four...five. She was being extra careful to do things just the right way. Annoying Noble two classes in a row probably wouldn't be her best goal. With a deep sigh to herself, Maddie collected the blue-bottle fly larvae then began dropping them into the cauldron one at a time, all the while wishing she could just toss them all in at once.

Mmkay, well...all done for now.

OOOH they had to STERILIZE the cauldron and everything? This was some serious business. She could see now why Jimmy was so fascinated by potions. It was all so interesting! She never thought she would be this in to the class.

She waved her wand over the cauldron and muttered "Scourgify!" She then took her cauldron and placed it firmly on the tripod and checked to make sure that the ethanol was far, far away from the cauldron, which it was. Good. Then she waved her wand and said "Incendio Tria!" eyes widening slightly as she saw the bright blue flame instead of the normal, orange flame at the tip of her wand. She swirled it around as the professor had demonstrated before putting out her flame.

She took the 500mL of water and added it in with one of the sterile syringes, and then took another sterile syringe and got the 500mL of horklump juice, adding that in to the cauldron as well. She then aimed her wand at the base of her cauldron and muttered "Incendio," once more. Just a few minutes later, it had started to boil, which meant it was time to go on. She grabbed her flobberworm mucus and added one, two...three four FIVE drops of it in. She then took the larvae - eeeew - and added ten of them, one at a time, before sitting back and waiting for the next steps.

Patrick's eyes got huge. He was supposed to use a rubberband? His hair wasn't even that long, it was a little long in the front and one piece kept sweeping into his eyes but how was he supposed to pull it back if he couldn't even move the hair out of the way to pull it back. He looked at Professor Nobel, "uh, yes sir." he figured he should try so that way he didn't lose any points since this was one of those classes where students always lost points for ridiculous things.

Trying to focus back in on what he needed to do for the lesson he set about cleaning the cauldron. Wait, he needed to ensure that his ethanol was put away properly. He didn't want to blow up the potions room or anything crazy. After putting it back he set off to his station again so he could finally start to sterilize his cauldron. Watching a few of the others he took note of what they were doing. He gathered his wand and waved it over the cauldron, "Scourgify" He placed the cauldron in the tripod, esnuring that it was firmly planted in the tripod and took a deep breath before stating, "Incendio Tria!" Gasping a bit at how bright the flames were. He shouldn't have been surprised but there he was totally surprised by the fact that it worked. He began to swirl the flames around the cauldron until he was certain that the cauldron was clean.

Now he had to actually start the potion. Grabbing a syringe he looked around the room to see if anyone else had gotten this far. With a deep breath and a prayer up to the potion gods he drew 500ml of water and placed it in the cauldron, repeating the motion for the horklump juice. "Incendio" he stated clearly watching the flame show up under the cauldron. Now he had to wait for the pot-- well that was fast.

"One, two,"
Patrick mumbled under his breath, so quietly that unless you were sharing the table with him you wouldn't have even known he was counting the drops of flobberworm mucus. Immediately he started counting the blue-bottle fly larvae. "One, two," it felt absolutely gross tocuhing these things and he was starting to want to just dump the remaining eight in but knew Nobel would be heated with him so he kept dropping until ten, hoping the next instructions would be easier.

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

He’d noticed Jessa had taken her time to replied, and Noble pursed his lips at her indecision. “Don’t be late.” He couldn’t be doing with tardiness, especially if it infringed on his dinner time. And he looked over at Patrick now, who seemingly hadn’t actually done anything with his hair. “I don’t care if it looks like a ridiculous sprout. If it’s flopping around it needs tying up.” It was for contamination issues as well as safety today.

Other than that though, all seemed to be according to plan so far. Which in some ways, was a little suspicious. He’d fully expected a burn or two when they got to incendio tria, but even the younger students appeared to have things under control. Emmalyn, Septimus and Trinetta had all safely negotiated the stronger fire spell; he’d have to remark as much to Marchand later. Cue him slightly impressed.

Noble started his own potion now, although he kept a watchful eye on the classroom. He was glad to see Maddie was paying a little more attention to the measurements today, after her teaspoon and tablespoon mishap. Nearby, Daisy seemed to be going well, and Noble noticed that her fellow Hufflepuff, Isa, seemed to have less issue with the animal ingredients today. She didn’t seem phased by adding the maggots at all. Thinking of maggots, Noble’s attention now turned to the Head Boy, who seemed to be mastering the art of a stiff upper lip. It was an almost disconcerting sight, after their clashes in the past. Did the maggots unnerve him that much? Either way, it was interesting. And Chloe continued to show promise with her attention to the bubbles. A smile quirked at the corner of his lip as he added the larvae to his own potion.

…seven…eight…nine…ten.

He clapped his hands together to get everyone’s attention. “You’ll need your glass stirring rod and knife in the next steps, so we need to sterilise them. We’re just going to run them twice through the hottest part of the flame on our burner…that is, the blue part.” He took his glass stirring rod from the desk, and ran it through the flame and back. “Nice and steady, no need to rush…just keep your hands well back on the handle.” He did the knife now too. “Once you’ve done that, strip the leaves from the woody part of the rosemary.” He held up the rosemary now. “It’s easiest if you start at the small end, and pull the stalk through your pinched fingers to get all the leaves off at once.” He showed them what he meant, resulting in a bundle of leaves between his pinched fingers, and a clean stalk in the other hand. “Chop it up finely, measure one tablespoon,” emphasis on the table, “sprinkle it over the top of your potion and stir twice clockwise.”

He didn’t chop it just yet, instead pushing it to one side and giving them the next step. “Then you’ll need to slice the murtlap tentacles in half lengthways.” He held up a tentacle and ran the point of the knife along its long side to show which way he meant. “With them still on your cutting board, add the 10 drops of honeywater and toss them together with your fingers.” He did so, looking like he was making some sort of odd noodle or salad dish. “Add the whole pile to the cauldron, before adding the tea tree oil.”

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy listened attentively to Professor Noble's next set of instructions and wrote down the next lot of notes.

After completing her notetaking, Daisy retrieved her glass stirring rod and knife. She held the handle of her stirring rod and carefully passed it twice through the blue flame of her burner to sterilise it. After doing that, Daisy tightly held the handle of her knife and repeated what she had done with the stirring rod so that the knife was sterilised.

Daisy now turned her attention to the rosemary. She removed the leaves from the stalk as instructed and put the stalk to one side. Daisy grabbed her knife and carefully and finely chopped the rosemary leaves and measured one tablespoon of the leaves which she then sprinkled into the potion. She then used her stirring rod and stirred the potion twice clockwise.

Daisy used a Cleaning Charm to clean her hands, syringe, cutting board, stirring rod and knife. She also sterilised her stirring rod and knife like before by passing each twice through the blue flame. She placed her murtlap tentacles on her cutting board and sliced them in half lengthways and then used her syringe to add the ten drops of honeywater. After she tossed them with her fingers, Daisy added them to her cauldron. She then measured and added the five drops of tea tree oil to the cauldron.

Daisy cleaned her hands, cutting board, knife and syringe using, "Scourgify," yet again as she awaited the next lot of instructions.
