Once invited into Kaysha’s office, you enter to find she had decorated it simply. The walls have been covered in amethyst coloured wall paper, her favourite colour. Over these wall papers, there are many framed photos of persons precious to her. One frame holds a collage of her at various ages, another shows pictures of herself and her father and yet another shows a picture of her beautiful, deceased mother. Most of the photos, however, contain pictures of her previous students from the Muggle Primary and Secondary schools she had taught at as well as from the little volunteer group she had formed so that kids who needed extra help in school could get it.
On one corner, there was a huge, wooden bookshelf laden with an assortment of books for her to read in her leisure time. Would you be interested in borrowing one? You simply need to ask! Just ensure that you return them back in their proper condition. In the opposite corner sat a sort of kitchenette dedicated to store refreshments for her guests. These refreshments were provided by the hard working elves of Hogwarts.
In the middle of the room sat Kaysha’s desk which was always so neatly organised. Across from her desk and chair, sat two comfortable chairs. Choose one and make yourself at home! There is no need to be shy!
"Thank you." she responded before gently placing the magazine she was looking through back on the table and plodding wearily into the office. For a moment she hesitated, just inside the doorway. She realized that she only visited Professor Stewart when things were bad. On the one hand, she trusted Professor Stewart more than any other professor. Even her Head of House, who was amazing, but a bit too jaunty for serious talk. On the other hand, it wasn't really fair to the professor for her to constantly burden her with her troubles.
Emmalyn took a deep breath and pushed forward to the chairs that sat just across from the desk and chair set up. She needed comfort, not formality, and the homey chairs put her more at ease.
"Thank you again for inviting me in." Her fingers fiddled with her bracelet as she spoke. "I was wondering if I could talk to you about how I'm doing at Hogwarts." She hoped it was okay and that she wouldn't be sent back to her Head of House.

Kay had stood back to let Lyn pass. "You're welcome.'' The slight hesitation of the Hufflepuff did not go unnoticed. This only made Kay frown. Lyn's demeanor was off and she would try to get to the bottom of it, however gently that could be done. The door was shut before the woman moved behind her desk, shrugging off the jumper as she went.
As she was settling into her own chair, Lyn spoke again. Ah, so this was an important topic. "Of course,'' came the gentle response. "Whatever you say in here stays between you and I unless you say otherwise. But I would like to know. Have you spoken with Professor Myers about this?'' Usually kiddos went to their Heads of Houses first.

She watched as Professor Stewart took a seat behind the desk, listing closely to her tone to see if she would be sent away. "No" she slowly shook her head "I haven't spoken with him about this." Her left hand drifted up to her long pony tail and began twirling the hair around her index finger. "He. I just. I feel more comfortable talking to you." What she wanted to say, or rather yell, was that she wasn't failing her class so she felt better talking to her.
After closing her eyes and taking a long, deep breath and exhaling slowly (smell the soup and cool it off style), she looked back to Professor Stewart. "Is it okay I'm here? I mean I'll understand if I have to talk to him first." Please don't send me away was screaming through her mind. She really did like her Head of House, but he was still a HE and it just wasn't the same. Plus, he was always out in the greenhouses or gardens and it was hard to track him down for any sort of important conversation time.

Was the twirling of the hair a nervous gesture?
Kay didn't know but she could sense that Lyn certainly wanted to speak her mind. She nodded. "That's alright. I'll be more than happy to lend an ear. I'll try to help as best as I can.'' There was an encouraging smile on her face. "Would you like a cup of tea? Juice? Cookies?''
Oh no.
Had her question brought about doubts in Lyn's mind. "I understand if you feel a lot more comfortable talking to me,'' Kaysha amended hastily. "I know that you and I have bonded over the Muggle world and it would be easier for you to get certain things out in the open with someone you are more comfortable and familiar with.''

Tea. Tea was soothing. Probably a good idea to have some tea. "Oh, yes, tea would be lovely. Thank you." Her response was almost an out of body experience. Like she was watching the 'has it all together' Emmalyn while the 'utterly failing' Emmalyn waited her turn to speak.
Crazy eyed, full of panic Emmalyn took back over. "Okay. Thank you. Yes, more comfortable." Her fingers went back to twirling her hair. "I'm failing Hogwarts. Like, all of it." Her voice trembled "Most of the first years are preforming spells that I haven't even attempted because I can't seem to do the easy ones." She unconsciously felt for her wand. "My potions all turn out wrong, and I can't tell a Isa rune from a Eihwaz." She took a deep breath and continued "I keep studying and studying, but I don't seem to be getting any better. At least not enough to keep up with the rest of the class. I don't know what to do."
Her eyes locked on Professor Stewart, hoping beyond hope that she would have an answer for her, even though she had no idea what that answer could be. Had they made a mistake? Should she not even be a Hogwarts? Maybe she was a squib? No, that would have meant her parents were magical, and they were only Muggles. Maybe there really was something wrong with her magically. She had been one of the students, chanting in the street last spring. Even though she couldn't remember how she got there or what was said, she did remember suddenly being aware and all of the students and professors shouting to get to a port key. She had so easily been taken control of.

Kay rose from her chair to prepare two cups of sweet tea for herself and Lyn. "Here you are,'' she said, setting down the steaming mug before the girl. Now she reclaimed her seat, hands clasping her own much. She was now more than fully prepared to listen to all that Lyn had to say.
Eyes remained fixed upon her as she listened to the plight. Kay's heart went out to Lyn. She knew what it was like to feel crushed like that, to not feel like you were good enough. She waited until Lyn was finished before speaking.
"Lyn, everyone learns at their own pace and certainly no one understands everything on their first try. I know because I speak from experience. Even though I came from half-blood family, there was much to learn so I can only imagine just how overwhelmed it must be for you as a muggle born.'' She smiled slowly. "My lessons are certainly where you excel in and I have no doubt you will excel at the remaining.'' There were a few solutions that could be offered. "I had study buddies while at Hogwarts. They motivated me. Professor Vance was one of them. Her strength was Divination while it was one of the worst subjects for me but with her help, I was able to secure satisfactory OWL and NEWT grades.'' Similarly, Ansley Finch had helped her with History of Magic, Victor Sokolov had helped with Ancient Runes, Cami with Transfiguration. "Have you tried this method?''

Sipping her tea had helped calm her mind and body. She hadn't realized what a giant ball of stress she had become. Being with Professor Stewart helped her refocus on reality and get out of the crazy parts of her head. "I really like your classes. I also like flying. Flying feels right." She took another sip of tea before continuing "I can't get by just taking Muggle Studies and Flying, can I?" She gave Professor Stewart a little smile.
"I am working on my spells with Daisy Swan. She's been a big help, especially with proper incantation. Having spent most of my life in the States, I think my accent is causing some troubles for me." She knew she couldn't blame all of her troubles on the way she pronounced words, but it could account for some of them. "I'm also working on a few of my long term assignments with Derf. He's one of the Hufflepuff prefects." Obviously the professor knew who the prefects were, but it made her feel special to say that she was teaming up with one.
She got quiet a moment and took another sip of warm tea. "So, you really had trouble in some of your classes too?" It comforted her to know that someone as smart as Professor Stewart used a study buddy. "I think the hardest part is seeing how well some of the first years are doing. It's hard enough keeping up with the second years, but to have the first years mastering spells on the first try...it's just hard."

"Flying almost always clears one's head, I'd like to think. It's a great way to take away stress. I hope it works for you.'' Because it does for her. Kay too took a sip of tea. "Unfortunately not. How much simpler that would have been even though it sounds like that would be a way to run from your problem. You are not to type to do that.'' Don't ask her how she knew Lyn was that type. She just knew and had confidence in the Hufflepuff.
Kay's face lit up with a smile. "And I'm sure you're making progress with their help.'' However, the mention of accents did give her more to think about. She rested her elbows on the desk before resting her chin upon the backs of her hands. "Your adjustment to the British accent certainly will take a little while. The important thing is that you continue interacting with everyone around you. I do like your American accent, by the way.''
The woman nodded, quite unashamed to admit her struggles during her school life. "Oh, yes. If I weren't for the support of my Professors and friends, I would have had a tougher time.'' She really was sad to hear of these struggles. "I know it can be difficult,'' she said gently. "Do you think there is anything in particular I can help with?''

Nodding her head in agreement, Emmalyn felt determined to be the girl she knew she could be. No, she would not be running away from her problems. Even if it would be the easier thing to do. She hadn't grown up doing things the easy way and she wasn't about to start.
"I am making some great progress." She smiled brightly, feeling the joy deep inside for the first time in weeks. "You should have heard my accent when we first moved back, just over three years ago. It was something. I feel it's not as strong as it was, but it might just be that I'm more used to the way everyone else talks."
Anything the professor could help her with? She took a long, slow sip of her tea while she pondered the question. She hand't really thought of why she needed to speak to Professor Stewart, only that she knew she needed to. Out of all the professors, she felt the most like family, the one she could trust with her secrets and failures. "Well, you have already helped. I mean, I don't feel so much like I'm failing without hope anymore." Her hand found its way back up to her ponytail and began twirling the long brown strands around and around. "Do you think you could give me a heads up if I'm going to get kicked out of Hogwarts? I don't really have anywhere to go if I can't stay here." Her parents were still not talking to her or allowing her back home. She'd been fine over the summer at quidditch camp and was headed back there for the next summer, but she needed to live at Hogwarts as much as she needed her education.

How excellent!
Kay eyed the happiness that now seemed to be slowly radiating off of Lyn. She smiled at this latest development and took a sip of tea. She was quite amused at the talk of the accent. "You must have had trouble being understood,'' she mused, setting the tea cup down. "Not to worry now though. I assure you now that the American accent is becoming less pronounced.'' Though she wasn't quite sure if this would make the girl a little sad.
"Believe me, you're not failing. You're simply being hard on yourself because you want to excel in all ways possible. My advice is for you to continue pushing yourself but not to be discouraged. I know the latter can be difficult but this is why my door is always open to you. I'm always well if you need to talk. Or just to sip some tea.'' Kay's smile faltered. "Really, Lyn. That will certainly not happen. You being thrown out of Hogwarts I mean.'' There was some hesitation on her end. "Your parents?'' she asked tentatively in case it was a sore subject.

It felt good to hear from someone she knew would be honest with her that she was sounding less American. Not that there was anything wrong with sounding American, it was just easier to feel like she was the same as everyone else. "Well, thank you. I'll keep working on it and I bet by this time next year, it will be even better."
She couldn't help but nod as Professor Stewart spoke of her wanting to excel. It was more true than she realized. She really did want to be the best she could be. "I really will try to keep that in mind. I know it's not a good thing to compare myself to the other students, but..." She paused and took a deep breath. "No, you are right. I am my greatest competitor and I will strive to be the best I can be." It took a bit of the pressure off to leave the others out of the equation. "Thank you for being here for me." She said with a smile of gratitude. Relief washed over her at the next words spoken. To know that she would have a place to live and learn for the next five years was a massive weight off her shoulders. A lone tear fell from her eye and slowly streaked down her face in a speechless moment. All she could do was close her eyes and let the words sink in.
At the mention of her parents, her eyes slowly opened and she refocused on Professor Stewart. "My parents." Her hands folded in her lap. "I think I mentioned last year that they were not happy with me attending Hogwarts. They had dropped me off to catch the Hogwarts Express and let it be known that I would not be welcome back if I chose this life." She stretched her fingers out then rubbed her palms on her legs. "I haven't seen them since that day. I tried over the summer to get in contact, but they wouldn't respond to my letters." Her palms smacked against her thighs. "It's okay. I'm okay. I've found places to stay over summer holiday and odd jobs that have covered books for the next term. I'll do it again every summer until I graduate from Hogwarts." She was very determined to make it without their help or support.

“It will be as though you’ve lived here all your life.’’ Kay did not doubt Lyn’s prediction. This was a strong-willed young lady who could do anything she put her mind to. She nodded now, seeing that the Hufflepuff understood the point she had been trying to make. “Instead of worrying and being harsh on yourself, channel those emotions to meet your goals.’’ Which in this case was for Lyn to better herself. “You’re quite welcome. I’m here whenever you need. Even if it’s during holidays. I’m just a call, email or owl away.’’
Again, Kay’s heart went out to Lyn. It was indeed very sad when mundane parents abandoned their child or children because of their magical abilities. She hesitated before speaking again, but only because she didn’t want Lyn to think she was being pitied. “If you every need somewhere to stay, I can always help you. Just think of it as me seeing potential in you and am willing to see that you’re well taken care of.’’

Her head nodded in agreement. "I will do better at focusing my emotions. Thank you." Focusing emotions for a young thirteen year old girl was far easier said than done. But, she would do her best and it would be nice to not cry so much. She had always hated that she was a crier. Happy, sad, mad. It didn't matter, she was crying.
"Thanks for being here for me. It's nice to know that I'm not alone." She quickly picked up her cup of tea and took a sip before she could let her mind wander to the sad place. "I promise to let you know if I need anything. I think I have where to stay this summer holiday already covered, but next summer will all depend on if I can work at camp or find someone else to take me in." Camp would be the best option since she would be old enough to be hired the next summer. Then she wouldn't need to work so many odd jobs trying to get enough money for school supplies.
She folded her hands on her lap once more and looked down at her fingers. She hated asking for things, but she knew Professor Stewart would be kind. "Speaking of summer and all, I need to find a job so I can buy my books and such for fall." She looked up and continued "Next summer I'll be old enough to be hired by the camp, but this summer I can only help out to cover my camp fee. Do you have any work I can do, or do you know of anyone that would hire a super sweet thirteen year old for odd jobs?"
It was worth asking. The worst she could say was no, then her job hunt would just continue.

She looked up and continued "Next summer I'll be old enough to be hired by the camp, but this summer I can only help out to cover my camp fee. Do you have any work I can do, or do you know of anyone that would hire a super sweet thirteen year old for odd jobs?"
It was worth asking. The worst she could say was no, then her job hunt would just continue.
“You don’t have to control them, just channel them into something else. Sometimes it’s good to have a good cry or to vent.’’ Kaysha downed some more tea which was getting to room temperature because she was quite neglecting it. “You’re welcome. I’ll be here whenever you need to talk again. Or if you need help with anything. It doesn’t matter the time of day. Or night,’’ she added as an afterthought. She then nodded. “Camping is always wonderful. You make a lot of friends and you learn quite a bit.’’ Now she decided to speak clearly. “The following summer you can spend with me. There’s nothing to worry about; you would not be putting me out in anyway. I live alone with the exception of my crup, Marshmallow but I’m always visiting family or friends so you wouldn’t be bored at all.’’ The final decision, of course, rested with Lyn. The Puff could even have a job when she became old enough. “If it makes you feel better, you can help me around the house.’’ That would be something like working, right?

It made her feel good to hear she didn't have to keep complete control over her emotions, at lest not all of the time. A good cry, happy or sad, did make her feel better. "Thanks. It's nice to have someone to talk to."
The next part had her speechless. She sat for a few moments, trying to take in the offer. Her breathing slowed and her heart rate became a calm thump, thump, thump as the overwhelming stress she had been under began to slowly fade away. "You would really do that for me?" It was almost too good to be true. "I" she swallowed back the tears that were dangerously close to letting lose "I would be honored to be a guest in your home. And, I'm a great housekeeper. You would hardly know I was there and I can even help with Marshmallow." She was a fantastic housekeeper. She had assumed the responsibility of keeping up most of the daily household chores from a young age due to her fathers long hours and her mothers schedule. "I don't know how to thank you."
She rose from her chair and walked towards Professor Stewart then paused, wanting to hug her, but not knowing if that would be allowed. She was still her professor, but she really thought of her as family.

Kay smiled for what seemed like the millionth time since Lyn had arrived at her office. But like the others, it was a genuine smile. Who could give a fake one when this girl was around? “You’re welcome. It’s always a pleasure to help in whatever way I can.’’
If possible, Emmalyn’s next words made her light up like a thousand suns. “Of course. I meant it all.’’ Just the thought of Emmalyn out there working nonstop to get herself along broke Kay’s heart. She waved a hand airily. “I’d rather you made your presence known. You can still go to camp and do other fun things with your friends.’’ There’s no way she’d forbid the Hufflepuff from doing any of those things. After all, her aim was to make her life easier and happier.
Still beaming, she finished off her tea just as Emmalyn got to her feet and came closer. A hug. It was what Emmalyn wanted to give her; she could tell for she had seen this stance from students before who were grateful for their assistance.
“It’s alright,’’ she said, getting to her feet as well. “A hug would be nice indeed.’’
Because sometimes that’s all a kiddo needed whether it be for reassurance or to be reminded that someone really did care for them.

Upon hearing the words, Emmalyn embraced Professor Stewart in the biggest hug she had ever given. Her fears over where she would be or how she would manage her school supplies were gone. She’d have a place to stay, and with someone that wanted her. It was all a bit too much to take in.
After what felt like not long enough, but was probably a bit too long, she stepped back and gave Professor Stewart a thankful smile. She was almost bouncy with joy and she had to go and tell her friends Maddie and Daisy that she was going to have a place to stay and be able to keep attending Hogwarts.
“Thank you again, really.” She headed back over to the chair to pick up her bag. “I better get back to the Hufflepuff common room and do some studying. You never know when all those spells will come in handy.” She gave her one last big smile, thinking about what it would be like to have a home to stay at again.
She turned to leave with far more skip in her step than when she arrived. Her visit with the professor had done more for her than the woman could have ever known. It also brought out the fierce loyalty in her. Professor Stewart would have from that moment on a lifelong supporter with Emmalyn always having her back.

Kaysha had no qualms about warmly hugging any of her kiddos. They were all like the actual children she never could have. It was no different with Lyn though she had to admit that she did feel closer to the girl more than she had with any other student. The length of the hug didn't matter; Kay had a feeling that Lyn could use the comfort and the good news.
"You do that, Lyn. I expect nothing but excellent spell work from you.'' Kay winked to show that she was kidding and that she wasn't applying any kind of pressure to Emmalyn and her studies. "I'll see you around then.'' The woman watched the Puff leave, her heart swollen with happiness. There was nothing better than being able to help one of her kiddos.
