Coming down to the end of October, the weather was bond to get a tad cold, a warning sign that the full blast of winter would be upon them all soon. It was for this reason that she had taken care to make sure that there was complete warmth circulating in her classroom. If any of the kiddos felt the need to wear extra layers of clothing then by all means they were quite free to.
This was not the first lesson she would be teaching after the events of last term and though they had went off fairly well, Kay was still worried about one of the more fiery kiddos giving her sass or disrupting the lesson. She didn't think she had the energy to defend herself anymore and it was for this reason that she had become withdrawn and unlike the cheery and bright person that she had been.
As it was, today the woman was seated at her desk. Though today's lesson was already planned completely, she was drafting a plan for her upcoming one. It was always best to be prepared. Once you enter the classroom, you may take a seat at one the combination desks. Taped to the whiteboard, is a chart displaying the various methods of transportation used by muggles. Air, land and sea methods were all covered.
OOC: Hiyo! WELCOMEEE to the first OOC lesson We shall officially get started in about 27-28 hours. In the meanwhile, have your kiddos greet Kay, ignore her, grab their seats or chat among friends! PS: Minimum chatthing tho, so as to not clutter the thread CLASS HAS STARTED!

She shook her head to clear her thoughts before beginning her assignment. She still wasn’t feeling all that well, and was having trouble focusing on the task. Her fingers let her pencil play back and forth as she studied the diagrams, hoping to remember as many as possible. It would have been easier for her if it were a diagram of a motorcycle or even a tractor. She had actually driven a tractor several times at her grandmothers farm. They use to let her drive around the big field in the summers.

Finished, she placed her head on the cool desk surface and waited for the class to continue. She hoped they would be going on some sort of field trip so everyone could experience riding in a car, or even driving a car.

Yeaaaaaah...these desks weren't exactly optimum for movement, but Derf did move his piece of parchment over a bit so she could see easily. Desk situation aside. Obvious, well, he supposed. But that would assume that one knew stuff about cars which...well...he did not. Not really. Though he knew enough to know how to buckle up. Even if he had been tangled up in everything and Jessa had had to save him during that one roadtrip. Good times.
"Oooooooooooooooooooh," he nodded, quickly amending the parchment to reflect this clarification. And since Bel wasn't sure of the order and he wasn't sure of the order...he just sorta assigned them haphazardly and hoped at least one of them was right. But yeah, he was feeling pretty useless right now.

Ruffling his hair, Derf looked up and then back over at the diagrams to see if....he could offer any sort of aid. And it was then that he noticed Maddie glancing around the classroom and offered her a small wave. But then it was back to the diagram of nonsense for him.
"Yeah...I don't reckon I am going to be much more help," he said apologetically to the fourth year while ruffling his hair some more. "2 just looks like a button...on the middle of the wheel? Turning to Daniel now, his face somewhat neutral, “So, what do you want to talk about? You know, seeing as the glovebox is used to keep a variety of things from car details to sun glasses. I mean, really, its just really a box used to keep things in”. A small smile on his face now, he couldn’t help but find his lack of muggle knowledge a little amusing. I mean, honestly, it was nice to actually know something and not feel completely stupid for a change.
Determined to find something that Daniel knew about travel and muggle related, he gave him a reassuring smile. “So... D. Ever used any muggle ways of travelling? I mean, car? Bus? Motorbike? Bicycle?”. Pausing slightly now, “You’re more than welcome to visit me in the summer if you want? I have a dirt bike you can fall off”, you know, because Daniel was guaranteed to fall off.
Looking down now, he continued to with his notes, added more detail to his notes.

She wouldn't be working with a partner, obviously. But in the event it wasn't obvious, Jessa shifted her chair just a little closer to the wall before training her gaze out the window again. The discussions going on around her could and were easily tuned out. They hadn't been meant to start, well good, because she hadn't started anyway.
Looking outside, images of tiny rabbits and concepts surrounding them crowded her head. There were so many ideas and decisions that needed making. Frankly, she didn't have time for labeling cars nor would she for the foreseeable future. It was one of those non-essentials that she tried to stay away from when she could.
Her sheet of parchment lay bare before her for what seemed like a long moment before she idly began making little scribbles of things she'd like to remember when the class was over.

Studying cars? Well that was okay and Skylar supposed it COULD have been worse, considering that cars were rather relevant too. Did wizards and witches have to take a driver's test too? No matter because while she was pondering and taking notes, there were cardboard displays revealed and apparently they had to study the diagrams and write down what they thought each of the parts were labeled as...
Blinking at the board, she tilted her head casually studying it as she began to first write the numbers down under interior and exterior, figuring even if she didn't know all the parts, then she'd get credit for knowing some? Maybe she could steal a peek off someone else's parchment too?
Biting her lip, Skylar began to write;

Well, then. Nobody really offered to partner up with her, so Maddie guessed she was going at this solo. She knew very, very few car parts, so she was pretty much going to wing it. Well, she was all done with the first part of the assignment! Some of the answers were really obvious, but the others just looked good to her. Whether they were right or wrong, she didn't know. She sure wished she had an intelligent partner, though, to make sure she was right.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Kay peeked here and there at notebooks. Occasionally, she would make a small comment like 'indeed', 'well done', 'try again' or something of the sort. But she never actually gave away any answers. Overall, she was quite pleased to find that the kiddos were mostly on the right track regardless if they had help from friends or not.
Once the twenty minutes were up, she returned to the front of the class and next to the board. "Let's get started then. Raise your hand and give me a part, please. Let's start with the interior then work our way to the exterior. Ready? Go!''
OOC: Hey, guys! Short post because I don't feel so well But we see each of you. Just go ahead and have the kiddos raise their hand then give name a part. They don't have to be correct. Also, you can name any part from either the interior or exterior, we can just pretend they're dealing with either. The final question comes in 24 hours

With a steady hand Patrick began to outline each and every part that he knew like the back of his hand. His papaw thought it was important to learn how to drive the car on the farm, plus the youngest of three older brothers allowed for him to get spoiled all of the time since he was probably the best behaved child. He heard Professor Stewart mention the unicycle, "i saw someone ride one every time my parents were in the city. It was bizarre to say the least." he commented back before getting back to his note taking.
Once he had finished he looked around the room to gauge how everyone else was doing. Now it was time to tell everyone a part. He raised his hand, waiting patiently, figuring not many of the students would know number nine on the interior. Once he was called on he began, "Number nine on the interior is the clutch. Although my parents car doesn't have one because it's an automatic." he stated the last part because he thought it was very interesting if you didn't know the difference.
Kye had been here, but she was feeling a little out of it if she was being honest. She hadn’t slept last night at all, and she was just… not in the mood. Even if it was casual Friday. Sorry Professor. She had greeted Professor Stewart as warmly as she could muster before plopping into a vacant seat near the back. She stared idly at the board that was filled with different transportation methods for muggles. She listened as Professor Stewart began the lecture, deciding that this was one of the only teachers she would even attempt to get out of her funky mood for. Raising her hand, she answered the first questions. “Well, we take a train to and from Hogwarts which is a fairly popular mode of transportation for muggles, but I think my favorite is the airplane. It’s got way more comfortable seats, and makes traveling far distances so much nicer than a broomstick can be.” Yes, Kye loved to fly, but she imagined trying to ride her broom from Hogwarts to a distant country… She would start to feel a bit antsy after a while. On the airplanes, she could sit comfortably, walk around, or even go to sleep! “As for the least favorite… I’d go with boat. I think in short distances it could be fun, but after a while I start getting a bit nauseous from all the rocking back and forth and…” she mock gagged a little bit, “it’s not for me. Same with the bike.” This last part was in reference to Jessa’s answer, who had covered a good few.
Cable cars? That was one Kye had not heard of. She knew cable as something used with televisions, but that was it. Were they just cars with tellies in them? She wasn’t interested enough to ask right now, and instead decided to settle with her thought of preferring to Apparate. As the lesson progressed, Kye wondered if she would decide to take a driving test. She didn’t recall either of her parents having a driver’s license, but she’s have to owl them and ask. As the new diagrams were presented, Kye looked at them apprehensively. Uhmmm this was stuff she didn’t know. She made mental notes of her answers. That’s a door… that’s a window… the steerer… She began filling out her notes, which… well, at least she could make the outline of it…
Staring at her pathetic list and, not cheating here, but she took a look at others that were hard at work with MUCH more written down. She noticed a Slytherin girl ( ) she wasn't well acquainted with seemed to know plenty about cars. Leaning over, she asked quietly, "Hey do you mind helping me out a little with this?" Kye lifted her parchment to show just how much help was needed.
Eria was minding her business, people watching...as she noticed an older snake girl looking at her. When the fellow she snake asked for a hand, Eria nodded without hesitation. While not necessarily the friendliest girl on campus...she didn't decline to assist when she was asked properly.
Smiling faintly as she saw the extent of the assistance, she quickly scooted beside her housemate. "Here, my list is completed. We can fill in some gaps." She unrolled her notes and looked over the far less populated list.
Steerer....the word jumped out at her and she was highly amused. "That is typically revered to as a 'Steering Wheel'." She wasn't laughing at the girl...it was just amusing. The lanky brunette had never heard anyone refer to it as such and found this interesting. She wondered what their classmates note lists looked like....
She slowly lifted her head off of the desk when Professor Stewart continued with the class. The whirring sound in her ears increased and her head continued to pound. She blinked her eyes several times, trying to focus on the question before turning to her work.
After glancing over her notes, and trying to pick one she was fairly certain of the correct answer, Emmalyn slowly raised her hand. "Professor, I think that number 4 is the radio. It's also where you can find the controls to the heater and air conditioner, and sometimes the navigation system." She was sure her father had called that entire area a specific name, but she could not remember what it was.
It would be easier if they had a real car to look at and play with. They could all take turns driving it around the grounds. There had to be some protection or cushioning spells that would keep them, and the car, safe if they crashed.
Daehyun could only frown at his friend. "Then why is it called glove box, if it's not exclusively for gloves?" Honestly, muggles were beyond confusing, which was exactly why he'd always preferred to stay away from all their techy devices and such. He wasn't going to force it if he didn't have a knack for them.
He could only meekly shake his head at Ewan's next inquiry. "I prefer walking." If Hogwarts Express counted as a muggle means of transportation, then he travelled by train.
Focusing back on professor Stewart, he leaned against the back of his chair and slumped lower in his seat, puffind his cheeks in annoyance at his lack of knowledge, and chose to stay silent as others named different parts of the car. He was going to listen and take notes. Lots and lots of notes.

It was a good thing that Professor Stewart moved the lesson along when she did, because his paper was now covered with all kinds of drawings and words. And he was starting to itch to be able to get behind the wheel. Were they going to get that opportunity? Because it would be totally hilarious to watch the Quidditch obsessed Skylar try to handle a car.
Anyway, the professor got a huh? look. Hadn't they literally just done this on their paper? Did that mean they weren't getting behind the wheel? 'Cause that would be hugely disappointing. "Number eight on the exterior is a brake light. It tells those behind you that you're stopping or slowing down so they don't rear-end you. There's typically two of them, one on the left and one on the right." Just in case said person couldn't see one for some reason.

Nathan felt like a dumb person trying to figure out what all those parts of the car for. Of course, he had seen muggle cars before but never actually ridden in one. He listed down the parts in his notes.
Quote:
1. A wheel to steer the car, perhaps?
2. Knobs.
3. Definitely a mirror.
4. More knobs and buttons?
5. Storage to put useless muggle stuff.
6. Stick-like contraption?

This time, the Ravenclaw didn't even hear the question. What had started out as scribbling a few of her thoughts onto the page turned into a full blown brain storm session filled with doodles and first draft proposals and points for assessment.
Yes, it was safe to say by now that the Sixth Year who sat so diligently at her desk scribbling away so astutely was no longer actually anywhere near the Muggle Studies classroom in her mind. Jessa was already back up in her lab and if she concentrated enough, she could see the cauldrons and the posters and the cupboards filled with notes upon notes that most would find useless or infinitely too tedious for reading.
Ideas of brake lights, air conditioners, steering wheels and the like went right over her head, not for a second settling in the girl's consciousness.
What colour would the bunny be? What would she name it?? Another scientist like all her other experiments? It would be different, it would actually be alive....
Hmm....
All things to think about while the Professor walked around checking answer sheets and her classmates went giving whatever answers they were apparently giving.

Labelling the diagram hadn't been the most exciting thing in the world. Hattie could have thought of so many better things she could have been doing. Hopefully this wouldn't be on the exam at the end of the term, because that would just be really boring. Maybe she shouldn't have taken Muggle Studies, but sometimes it was fun. So she would just have to hope that the topics would get a bit more interesting, or something useful. No offence to anyone that liked cars but Hattie was pretty sure she'd never need to use a car. At least the lesson was moving on a little now. Hopefully they would get to do something practical now. Something more interesting, and practical to get them moving.
Oh. Some questions to answer. The blonde sighed, but did put her hand into the air. "Number six on the outside is a side mirror, and I believe it helps you to see what is behind you whilst you're driving."

Kye was rather amused by Eria’s notes, as they sounded like things that Kye would write. Eria had Kye’s seal of approval so far. She realized she kept going back to “number plate,” and decided to ask. “Okay, so I’m a little confused on this one… Is this sequence assigned to the driver or the car?” Did they keep track of drivers like that? Feeling brave, his raised his arm and decided to go for one he hadn't actually managed to come up with an answer for. He had a sudden wave of inspiration now though. "Professor Stewart, is number six on the interior some kind of lever? You have to move it forward to move the car forward and pull it back to make the car go backwards?"
It made total sense.

They hadn't been meant to start right away. That was pretty much all she had heard. Welp... it was a tad bit to late for that now. Not only had she basically filled out pretty much each part, she thought she had most of them correct. Kinda. Maybe. Mostly. What exactly was she supposed to do for twenty minutes now?!
Swinging her feet back and forth beneath her desk, fingers tapping very lightly on her knees, she hummed under her breath to some random made up tune. This was all a way to note only pass time but all to keep herself occupied. It lasted all of maybe five out of the twenty minutes before she stopped. She nibbled at her bottom lip, twirled a strand of hair around her finger, went back to tapping her fingers on her knee and tapped her pen on her knee as well. Rylee was doing the best that she could to remain quiet and not disturb anyone around her but sitting here was tough.
FINALLY! Professor Stewart said it was time to move on. Rylee let out a breath of relief, glancing down at her notebook for her answers to the question before raising her hand. "Number seven on the interior is the gas pedal, I think." It was either the gas pedal or the break. One of the two.

“Why are there so many things under the steering wheel?” Kye asked. “Couldn’t this be achieved with one alone?? Use it when you want to go, and stop using it when you want to stop?” That's what would make the most sense to her! Why did you need a separate one for each and then she didn’t understand number 6 and 8’s functions at all really.
When thanked the younger snake simply shrugged a little. "No problem." She wasn't outgoing enough to offer services, but when approached politely she actually didn't happen to mind...Especially not when it was a housemate #snakepride.
Alright, Eria may have possibly cracked a faint smile when the older snake commented on her listed alternate name for the glove compartment. "Yes, for whatever reason, I've heard that name for it. It's some sort of Muggle slang, though I'm entirely uncertain as to why they call it that. I've also heard it called a 'jockey box', a 'cubby hole', and a 'torpedo compartment'. Though I don't understand any of those names for it. Muggle slang is very strange honestly." She lived with a muggle and still didn't always get it...
When she brought up the number plate Eria nodded and thought about how to best explain it. "Mostly it tracks the car, but actually both? A person can have more than one car, so each car would have a number plate. It is linked to the driver's license number though."
Looking up at the Professor, Eria did as they were all asked and picked a part to identify. The one she liked best besides the radio was the speedometer honestly. She liked being able to easily track what speed she was accelerating at. It'd be nifty if brooms had them...
"Number 2 on the interior vehicle diagram is a 'Speedometer'. This tracks the rate at which you are accelerating, which is important as Muggle's have laws indicated with signs as to how fast you may legally travel in different areas."

Well, Maddie hadn't made it to the second part of the exercise, but it didn't really matter now, since they were all sharing answers. She tried to follow along as people started calling out answers here and there, but it was super hard to follow along with something she was so unfamiliar with. She peered down at her list to see which one she could share. It'd have to be something from the outside, since time was called before she got to the inside.
OHHH!
She wanted to share number three on her list! It seemed like a fun little car part. She raised her hand. "I think number three on the outside is a part used to wave at passersby or people in other cars," she said. "That's what it looks like to me!" After she shared her answer, she tried to jot down a few answers she could hear from the others.

As the answers started to file in, Kay etched on the respective posters and next to the correct numbers, the parts. "Clutch. That's correct on both counts, Mr. Dooley. I must say I prefer automatic. How about you?"

My, the kiddos were certainly on a roll. "Indeed, it is.'' Scribble, scribble as she labelled the radio along with the AC system in brackets.

Seeing Daehyun's reaction, Kay quickly assessed what was wrong. She took the time to move close to his combination desk to whisper a few words of encouragement. "We're all here to learn. This will come in handy if you decide to go for your license. Honestly, I hope you do.''

Kay had seen all those drawings as she had passed around the classroom but Ronan's work had been exceptional. You could say she was proud of him. "Quite correct there. Everyone, keep in mind that it is an offense to not have both break lights working.''

The woman squinted in Jessa's direction. Was she zoning out? "Earth to Ms. Cambridge. Would you care to provide us with an answer?''

"Yes. It helps so that you can overtake safely if necessary. These mirrors are adjustable so you'll always have their use to your advantage.''

"Professor Stewart, is number six on the interior some kind of lever? You have to move it forward to move the car forward and pull it back to make the car go backwards?"
It made total sense.
"That's called a gear stick. It helps you set the car in reverse, park, among other things. It should be noted that only automatic cars have these. Like Mr Dooley mentioned earlier, there is no clutch for automatic cars that is why you will have to use the gear stick instead to select your choice.''

"Right, Ms. Prichard. The one in the center is the brake.'' Those two can easily be mixed up.

Now that the class had almost finished helping her label the diagrams, Kay quickly added the remaining parts then capped her marker for now. "The last portion of the lesson before the practical... simply let your classmates know a few do's or don't while driving on the roadway or utilising a vehicle.''

Chloe wished she'd paid better attention to Charlotte talking about her motorbike, which wasn't at all a vehicle like they were discussing but used the same roadways. There was a helmet, but surely automobiles didn't require helmets. Probably.
Oh, but... "Seat belts! I think you have to wear those so you don't get hurt if your car goes haywire." As Muggle devices were wont to do. "And... Professor, do you have to wear a helmet? My sister has one for her motorbike, but I wasn't sure if you needed them for cars too."
Daehyun's eyes widened as professor Stewart moved closer to him - was he in trouble for not recognizing-? Oh. She was sweet and encouraging, and he nodded quietly to her words, until she'd mentioned a licence. Surely she couldn't mean a driving licence? Because that was just one big nope for him. But he did greatly appreciate her trying to make him feel better. Not only trying, but succeeding.
As for advice on what to do and what to avoid? His hand went up. "Use all mirrors." Because he supposed vehicles had so many for a very good reason. Unless muggles were that full of themselves and wanted to admire several of their angles while operating a vehicle.

Practical? Did that mean they would be getting behind the wheel after all? Because Ronan was ready for it. But first, a tip on what to and what not to do when behind the wheel. Uh....he could think of lots of them. Some...well let's hope that no one here would be doing such things.
Hmm...seatbelts had been mentioned, so had the use of the mirrors. Oh..."Make sure you keep your eyes on the road at all times." Yep. After all, that was what the windscreen (or windshield, if you're American) was mostly for.
