A bit confused about the plot? Housemates talking about a mysterious something going bump in the night? Here's where YOU can post and catch up on happenings around the castle and in Hogsmeade -- out of character, of course.
This means that unless your student character heard this stuff from other students or witnessed the actual event, your student character doesn't know about it.
Also, this is a reminder to everyone to only post updates on the school plot here. Please do not post the happenings of your student character in here; that kind of chat goes in the school chat thread.

As Tristian made his way to the table, the woman gave him a nod of acknowledgment. As for Gaston's appearance, she honestly was a bit surprised by him addressing her by her first name but nonetheless smiled at him. "Good evening, Gaston."
Her eyes did catch Haraldur, though he seemed to have ... forgotten? ... to continue moving to his seat. She was about to give him a look to signal that she wanted to get the show on the road, so to speak, and get food on the table; however, her attention had been grasped.
First there was the History of Magic. "Hello, Charles. I'm doing quite well tonight. Yourself?"
Next she gave Paul a casual wave. No words were said though.
Then Laurel's response made her brow raise -- not quite sure if the woman beside her was being serious or not. Merpeople stirring up the term? The headmistress honestly doubted it. During the time she had been headmistress of the school, they had co-existed well and mostly minded their own business. Regardless, she responded with "Duly noted" and left it at that.
Finally, the owl that had flown into the hall was noticed ... and she did catch glimpse of the Hufflepuff table commotion ... and Prefect Derfael Ashburry-Hawthorne was coming up to their table.
Would she ever get the opportunity to give her speech?
With the Herbology professor only being a couple chairs away from her, the boy's words were heard clearly. Her gaze shifted to Paul, over to the Hufflepuff table, and then back to Derfael. She didn't need all the details, not at this very moment at least. "Please feel free to escort her to the common room if a more appropriate environment is needed right now. I can ask one of the elves to send food up, if needed." Her head then turned to Paul. Without saying anything, her look was enough to let him know that he, being Head of House and everything, was excused.
On that note, the headmistress rose from her chair. The feast, though she had very little to announce this term, needed to carry on. After all, everyone needed a good night's sleep considering there were classes to be had bright and early in the morning.
"Good evening, everyone! I would like to begin this term by welcoming those of you who have returned to us over the summer back to school, and for those of you who are brand new a warm welcome to Hogwarts," she said, smiling brightly, after reaching her podium and having everyone's attention. "There are just a few things I would like to mention before we dive into a spectacular feast."
"First of all, this term we have no new staff." As far as the American knew, it had been a while since that last happened. "I can say with confidence that we all are ready for another exciting year of learning."
"Quidditch tryouts will be happening soon. If you are interested, please take note of the tryout session scheduled as posted in your House common room. If you have any questions, please ask Professor Baldvinson or your House captain.
"As you all know, the first day of classes is tomorrow. So make sure that you do not stay up too late tonight. Not being prompt to and present, physically and mentally, in your classes will not be tolerated."
Of course, she paused for dramatic effect, allowing that particular note to echo throughout the hall. Her face shown the utmost seriousness at this point.
It didn't take long, though, for the smile to return to her face. "But, first, enjoy the feast." With a wave of her hand, goblets and plates full of drink and food filled the table. Satisfied, Regina made her way back to her seat.

For those paying close attention, you might notice something else bobbing above the surface of the lake for a split second. But before you can get a proper look at what it is, it disappeared from view and back into the lake as if it were never there to begin with.
What was that? Something to be worried about? Or was it just a figment of your imagination?

Some of the objects found in the lake were analysed in a late-November Ancient Runes lesson, which can be read in full HERE. (The main activity and question 2 posts in particular should be read for information about those objects.)
We also were graced with a Daily Prophet delivery in the Great Hall:

Better set your pumpkin juice aside, untie the twine, and grab your own copy.

However, she was in no rush to get to her office, so she was taking the long way there rather than taking her staircase shortcut.
The features of the fifth floor were not unfamiliar to her. She didn't bat an eye when she strolled by the reading lounge, the door to the storeroom, and the balcony that overlooked the inside of the Clock Tower. Though when she came across the statue of Gregory the Smarmy, something about it caused her to stop.
No, she wasn't there to reflect on the man's history. There was a slight gap behind the large man that she had never noticed before. Was that a passageway opening? Interesting...
Nuria was very pleased to be delivering this particular letter. It had been a while since she had last made a Hogwarts delivery. Plus the task had come at an opportune moment when she desperately needed to get away from the younger owls.
She gracefully made her way through the castle, searching for the Head Hooman. She could sense that the woman was somewhere in the upper part of the castle. Deeper into the castle Nuria went, but it didn't take her long to find who she was looking for - this old owl was just that good at her job.
After swiftly landing, the envelope was set on the floor. "Hoo."
Then Nuria took a moment to stretch her wings and, not needing any treats or pets, flew away.

Dear Headmistress Hawthorne,
I'm the curator of the Pre-History and Iron Age Collections at the Scottish National Museum for Wizarding Artefacts, and I'm contacting you in response to the recent Daily Prophet article about the items found in the Great Lake at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While the find as a whole is astonishing, the Viking brooch with the distorted faces pictured in the article caught my eye. We have a tapestry in storage here at the museum which was discovered a number of years ago in a Church collection about 30 miles due south of Hogwarts castle. It raised some interest with our experts, due to its fine quality and craftsmanship, dated to around the 10th Century. Made up of a number of story panels, not unlike the Bayeux Tapestry, it appears to depict a wizard partaking in a Viking battle. One of the panels shows a chest of treasure filled with coins and jewels; another depicts the wizard wearing a brooch with the same face motifs as found in your hoard.
I am currently assembling an exhibition of key Scottish finds, and am keen to make the Great Lake treasure one of our prominent displays. In particular, I would be interested to pair the coins and brooch side by side with our tapestry, to build a fuller narrative of Wizarding History in Scotland, before even Hogwarts was located here.
I look forward to discussing details with you further,
Dr. Agnes Pike

As the lake's waves lapped gently against the grassy shores, they brought something other than the typical water and dirt up on land. The small, round objects that were swept on shore sported a good covering of mud and bore the dirt accumulated by the passage of time. Enterprising Hogwarts residents might still glimpse something of a glitter or a glint from the objects' surfaces from afar, for these objects were not entirely mud balls. Beneath the grime, the gold coins would sparkle in the spring sunlight. In their current state, only a small, uncovered portion of that golden surface would shine through the muck to hint at the objects' identity. Dare you collect such odd, old gold coins? If you have the guts to pluck them from the ground, what will you do with these curiosities? Or will you let them slumber in the obscurity of the lake's shores?

Headed out to the lake with her black journal tucked in her hand to muddle through on her training log (something that she was sure was ridiculous for her since she already trained quite regularly), she stopped short when something shiny caught her eye. Huh?
Dropping her planner at her side, she squatted down by one of the objects to have a look, unafraid to touch it, and rubbed the mud and dirt from it. Was this ... related to the treasures found in the Fall? And why all of a sudden the reveal of them?
"SpeRevelio," she muttered, figuring she should probably be safe. Just in case. Considering she did want to maybe study cursebreaking, if she got accepted.

He was halfway around the lake when he noticed something shining in the dirt under his soles. At first, he thought that someone had gone a little overboard with the glitter. But, at second look, it seemed to be some kind of metal. Squatting down to get a closer look, he saw that not only was it metal, it was a coin of some sort. And that it wasn't the only one. Could they be from the hoard that was found earlier this term?
He plucked a few of the coins up and performed a cleaning charm on them trying to see the image on them. Though, he probably should've thought about casting the charm that Skylar was now doing as well.....
Oooo, sudden coin windfall by the lake! What will Skylar and Ronan's spells reveal...?

Unlike the lake, the water of the hot springs is always transparently clear, allowing you to see the very ground of the spring if you so desire. Something shiny at the very bottom of the hot springs captures your gaze. Squinting down at it, you realize that it is in fact just one of many such shiny objects littered around the ground. They are gold coins, this you can determine easily even without getting close. None of the coins are on the shore, all are submerged in the water.
Will you dive under to retrieve these coins? Or perhaps you will use summoning charm?

Naturally, nothing appears to be out of the ordinary. All that surrounds you are thick forest trees, the occasional boulder, and the flittering and chirping of birds. As you approach the gate, however, you notice something shiny on the road up ahead. Stepping forward, you realize that there is a trail of gold coins (definitely not Galleons) coming from the trees to your left, crossing the road, and continuing through the trees to your right. There is no sign of how these coins got here.
What do you do? Pick up the coins and examine them closer or leave them where they are and alert someone?

Needless to say, the Willow is a pleasant sight right now. The nice day may entice you to walk along the path that has been placed a safe distance away from it. Once you get a good look at the tree, however, you notice something shining at the base of the tree. What is that glistening at its roots? If you squint your eyes, you might be able to make out that they are gold coins. From afar, you might assume that they are Galleons. But a closer examination will prove otherwise and date them quite a bit.
Will you summon these coins? Or will you test fate and try to snatch them with your bare hands? The choice is yours...

After making your way to the heart of the pathways, something shiny catches your eye. A gold coin lies on the ground. If you look at it closely, you will notice that it is quite old. You may begin to wonder how the coin wound up there, but no clear answer is available. What is clear, though, is that this isn't the only coin strewn about. Another few coins can be seen in the distance, nestled in the grass off the pathway. Beyond that, next to a burrow near the edge of the forest, lies another pair of coins.
Dare you follow the trail and do some collecting? Or do you think it is best to leave the coins be?

The screeching at the lake soon died down. She was certain that it had caught the human's attention and that they were making their way to the lake. Merchefianess Arethusa rose out of the water and looked around, a crown settled on the top of her head. Two of her bodyguards followed. Their green locks which were so great and flowing in the sea were now hanging limply around their grey shoulders. Arethusa's wide eyes shifted from her two bodyguards, both equipped with spears, to the people that had gathered at the lake.
The expression on her face was that of anger and her fist was tightly gripped. She opened her mouth, about to let out another screech. Her village had been attacked, and she was not happy at all. But then she remembered that the humans couldn't understand their language above water. And those things were on the move.
She, along with the bodyguards, went back down under the surface. She motioned for her bodyguards to remain where they were with a simple movement of her arm and swam closer.
Her head then bobbed above the surface. Arethusa opened her mouth again to speak, making sure to speak in the human tongue. She had to warn them.
"My village was attacked! The attackers are coming this way! We'll try to hold them off as long as we can."
Without another word, she retreated back under the water and swam to the depths of the lake to help her fellow merpeople.

The skeletal figure of an Inferi pulled itself up, its wet, tattered clothes clinging to its body. Many others followed, some with Viking attire and some with coins falling out of their torn pockets.

The unaffected Inferi moved forwards with surprising speed. They spread themselves outwards as more appeared from the depths of the lake. The army were growing and didn't look like they were going to stop anytime soon. They drew closer.... and closer.... you could almost see every detail on their skeletal figures...
One, the leader of the pack, approached one of the talking adults (Noble). It gripped his hand, the one with the long stick, and held on tight. Another latched onto his other arm and, together, they tried to drag him back... back.... back to the lake.
The other Inferi drew close to the small humans. Arms were grabbed, ankles were held onto and some even lunged at the small humans.
In all the chaos, groups of Inferi broke away from the pack to move in different directions. Out, away from the crowd, and onto the grounds....
The pale moonlight beamed down on the greenhouses, illuminating several pairs of cloudy, white eyes. Some of the Inferi managed to break away and converged on the buildings. A pair of hands, sparsely covered in decayed flesh with bones visible, gripped a door and ripped it off its hinges, flinging it aside as if it were no lighter than a gum wrapper. The sound of glass shattering echoed as another rotting hand punched a hole in one of the walls.
The creatures laid waste to the greenhouses. Tables were upended. Plants were yanked out of their pots and cast aside to die, while their pots smashed on the ground. The poor daffodils honked frantically until one Inferi silenced them by ripping their petals off. Another picked up the venomous tentacula and threw it at the wall, shattering both the pot and the wall.
Some of the carnivorous plants tried in vain to fight back by biting the Inferi’s skeletal appendages, only to be thrown off violently. The Devil’s Snare wound itself around their legs, but they snapped it in half as if it were a mere blade of grass. Soon the greenhouse floors were littered with dirt, dead plant parts, shards of glass and terra cotta, and a few gold coins that fell out of the creatures’ tattered clothing, but they weren't finished. Their rampage of terror was only getting started!

Dropping the largest Blast-Ended Skrewt in his arms meant that he could handle the smaller one better and move it around easily. Peeves shifted the creature in his arms so that its fiery butt was facing out. He paused a moment to savor the chaos from his special delivery before he flew right at the group with the skrewt butt-out to help burn the nearest Inferi. The student nearest to that Inferius had better move out of the way or she might get burned too (Chloe).
"AAARGHHH! CHAAAARGE! HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Days of Potter 2023:___________________________ Which Bertie Botts Flavour Are You?
The Inferi keep advancing toward the humans, their rotting skeletal hands inching ever closer to grabbing flesh. Fire spells fly at them as they draw near; a few of the creatures standing in the wrong place at the wrong time are set ablaze. They flail about, writhing in pain on the ground as the flames consume them. Soon, the fire spreads to the grass around them.
The rest of them keep on coming. Several Inferi surround the adult human, grabbing her from behind. Once they take her out, disposing of the children will be too easy! The other creatures round on the smaller humans, grabbing arms, legs, and any other body arts they can get their cold clammy hands on to drag them down.
The wandless girl's bat collides with the side of one creature's head, shattering bone and esposing the innards beneath. The walking corpse feels no pain from the blow, only anger. It blinks, its white lifeless eyes turning to her as it grabs her by the neck. Any last words, humans?
A number of Inferi continued their search for the rest of the treasure. They didn't care what they destroyed to get what they were here for: fabric, stone, humans. They were not leaving without the gold. Their search continued with a more intensity than before. They were becoming desperate and ruthless, and it showed.
Coins, fabrics and the like joined the fray. The pieces rained down on everyone gathered there: humans and Inferi alike. The few Inferi that weren't fighting wasted no time in collecting up the pieces on the floor. Anyone who fought them were tossed aside... clawed at... blood splattering everywhere...
Anyone observant enough might have noticed a whooshing sound... a whooshing sound that was steadily growing louder... and louder... and louder...
A particularly loud WHOOSH! was heard before it happened. A large number of coins flew in from all directions: the castle stairs, the dungeons, the grounds. People were no longer in possession of them, the Inferi were. Every dead corpse stopped struggling with the humans and joined in the catch for the gold. Skeletal hands grabbed as many of the coins as they could, jumping, grabbing, doing as much as they could.
As suddenly as it had started, the chaos stopped. When all the treasure had been gathered up, every Inferi came to an immediate stop. The Inferius in lead turned its milky eyes towards the others, its army. There was a small jerk of its head before it turned on its heal and walked out of the hall. Arms laden with gold, every other Inferi followed out of the hall and out of the castle.

Her head turned at the sound of Ignatius ... and she couldn't help but blink in silence for a moment at his compliment. The colour looked good on her? In her opinion, blue was more her colour; yellow, not so much. Regardless, a smile appeared on her face. "Thank you, Ignatius." She left it at that, though she did want to question why the Potions professor decided Haraldur's seat was a better
When Celestia and Gaston arrived, the headmistress gave the two of them a courteous nod of her head. The Transfiguration professor was down at the end of her table, and Gaston didn't seem to be very talkative.
Laurel soon grabbed her attention, however. Again, more comments about the yellow. "Thank you," she replied, still not quite perched at her seat yet. "I'm not too particular about wearing yellow, but figured the occasion called for it."
"Good evening, Kaysha. And thank you."
Then Roderik, with his dimples, happened. Of course, she couldn't help but smile at him. Though this time the smile was a little smaller than usual. "Same to you" were the few words Regina managed to say to him. They would talk later.
Bypassing her seat, the woman made her way down to the other end of the table and walked straight up to the podium. It was a little early for her to be making her speech, but food was a needed distraction. Plus she was certain that there were hungry, hungry Hogwartians out there that couldn't sit there with rumbling tummies much longer.
"Another term has come to an end, ladies and gentlemen" Regina began, looking out at them all, her eyes shifting from the Gryffindor table to Hufflepuff to Ravenclaw and to Slytherin, then back again. "After the unexpected Inferi invasion, we all deserve a holiday to rest, relax, and recharge. Before those days come, however, I do want to recognise the great vigilance that was displayed that night. It isn't every day one has to face a mass of Inferi and live to tell the tale."
The headmistress led the entire hall in a round of applause before continuing.
"Further recognition is in order for Hufflepuff House. Congratulations for your achievement of winning the Quidditch Cup. Furthermore, congratulations on your seizing of the House Cup, with an impressive two thousand and forty-seven points. Your hard work and dedication has certainly paid off."
Cue another round of applause.
"Lastly, I wish to recognise those of you who are graduating. Please rise," she continued. A pause was given while she watched them stand up on by one. "Congratulations on this great milestone. You have achieved so much, from surviving your examinations, mastering various spells, and gaining knowledge and experiences that have shaped you into who you are today. Hogwarts has been like home for many of you, and it will be here waiting to welcome you back. But now a new chapter of your life begins, and I wish you all the best of luck on your future endeavors."
A final round of applause was had. Once the clapping ceased, the headmistress motioned for the graduates to take their seats and then elaborately waved her hand, causing food and drink to appear on all of the tables in the dining hall.
"Bon appétit!"
