Once you've tickled the pear and turned the knob, the Hogwarts kitchen will be revealed to you. Located directly beneath the Great Hall, the kitchen is a high-ceilinged room with five identical tables to the ones in the dining room above. Unlike the room situated above however, heaped around the walls are large quantities of pots and pans. On one end of the room are shelves of plates and utensils, stoves, sinks, and a large brick fireplace.
Here numerous house-elves are working on the castle's next meal when they aren't tending to their other duties as employees of the school. The team of house-elves have specific assignments to accomplish inside the kitchen, whether it is to cook, wash the plates and cutlery, keep the pantry stocked, place more wood into the fire, or set the tables before everything is summoned to its exact replicas overhead. Though the house-elves are incredibly busy, they will surely serve you a snack ... if you aren't asking Algamus. Or you can, of course, make your own food. Just don't leave a mess behind!

Did it surprise her that the train had left her too busy for an ice-cream sit down with Derf? Not really. Last term had been the test run. By now the Ravenclaw knew well enough that things would happen and when they did, it couldn't...or rather shouldn't be swept under the mat and ignored. Patrols would need to be done, problems would need to be solved and ending up on opposite ends of the train was entirely likely.
This was different. With School now in full swing it was simply a matter of picking a time that worked for them both.
The time after the last lesson of the day worked brilliantly. Now she could unwind from the monotony of going through materials she already knew while she prepared to get her hands back into things that held more interest for her. The Sixth Year tickled the pear then made her way inside, already looking around for things they'd need. A bowl, spoons...there was ice-cream in the fridge, yeah? Jessa moved over to the cupboards, grabbing a bowl of decent size but she decided to wait for Derf before picking flavours.

Fifth year was already proving to be a bit stressful. It was as though it was the universe's goal to see just how many of them it could push over the edge into having an anxiety attack and breakdown over OWL examinations. Need they be reminded every other day that what was being discussed in lessons would likely benefit them come exam time? Apparently they did, but Derf's brain could only take so much per day before it hit its quota...and some subjects seemed to just have information that bounced off his head rather than sink in.
So this, meeting Jessa like they had done since he was three years old for ice cream (though today was sans the Diagon Alley setting) was just the ticket right now. And, well, they had loads of catching up to do since he hadn't been able to see her all summer. Though he was not sure how privy he was to knowing details about that, or if he should even ask.
"Jessa!" he grinned, swallowing back some of his nervousness as he tickled the pear and stepped into the kitchen.

Spoons.....whipped cream...cherries....what else could she grab while she waited? The Ravenclaw did a single turn, surveying the kitchen around her. Syrup was the first thought when her gaze hit the fridge, but she might as well wait for Derf if she'd be getting the ice-cream from there too. Make one thing of it.
Restlessly, Jessa moved about the kitchen. Standing still and waiting on a friend was surprisingly harder than she remembered. When was the last time she'd been able to sit still for an extended period without being at least somewhat occupied? Thankfully, this didn't go on for long. The Hufflepuff's entrance earned him a smile of her own, perhaps not as wide a grin as his but it was there all the same and it was genuine.
With a flick of her wand, the freezer door swung open. "Wanna grab the ice-cream?" Jessa pulled herself onto the counter by their supplies, waiting for him to join her. "This is usually my Friday night. Nice way to unwind from the week of tedium." Or overstimulation. More often than not it was overstimulation and her needing a quiet moment to CALM DOWN. "Did you bring Picketta along?"

With a long day of lessons finished, and having skipped lunch to study, Lex was in need of a snack. She tickled the pear in just the right spot, as she had watched other students do, and the kitchen door swung open as she turned the knob.
Lex had grown tall for her age over the past several months, and was still growing taller, every day it seemed. This left her constantly hungry. What she really wanted right now was something sweet. Some cake, perhaps? Or a nice bit of pudding. Possibly a milkshake. Mmmmmm. Surely whatever she decided to eat must involve chocolate. Lex's mouth watered a little as she considered her options.
What Lex DIDN'T want to do was get in the way of the house-elves who were doing their very important work preparing the next meal. Lex's family had a house-elf when she was very young, but she had quietly freed the elf late one night, by giving it an ugly hat which she had gotten as a Christmas present. Her grandmother had been cross with her, because "Who else is supposed to do the cleaning?" Lex giggled now at the memory, and wondered where the old house-elf was now, eight years later. She didn't even remember its name. Oops.
Anyways, she didn't want to waste time. She made her way over to a fridge and peeked inside. Nah, there were no sweets in this one. She'd have to keep looking.

Scrub…scrub…scrub. Scrub…scrub…scrub.
The sounds of movement caught Argyle’s attention from her spot cleaning a particularly messy pot, her ears prickling up in curiosity. Too big sounding it was for another of her fellow house elves Yep…of that she was sure. And sure enough there was a young Hufflepuff human in the kitchens. Hopping from the stool, the pot forgotten on the counter, Argyle scruffled over to the fridge. Coming up behind the girl, the elf’s head tilted as if scanning the shelves as well.
“Can Argyle help Mistress?” The house elf watching the young girl with wide-eyed interest. "Does Mistress want something?" Because cleaning could wait.

Derf was trying not to look at his friends though the lens of an infant or wounded creature - something Abey had pointed out to him he did all to frequently - but it was really hard. Especially when he noted a similar look in Jessa's eyes like the one he had seen when he had first met Picketta. One of uprooting and unease. But he had also promised himself he wasn't going to pry or otherwise try to talk too heavily with his friend, she seemed more like she needed distractions right now anyway. Though...he did want to know. Growing up was odd like that, the people you once told everything to suddenly...not being those people. Not that he did not trust Jessa...but, well, he did not approve of a lot of her experiments and she knew that. So a shift was only natural.
"Sure," he nodded, pivoting around and poking his head inside. He ended up grabbing a few cartons, probably one too many, but he was feeling particularly indecisive at the moment. Story of his life, really. "Yup," he chirped as he set them down in a neat row before her, pointing to his head once his hands were free. "Scamander is here too." In his enchanted pocket, as always. "Woulda brought my toad from choir too...but he doesn't take a liking to really being around me other than when we're singing." There was also his fire salamanders but, well, they stayed in the creatures area for obvious reasons.

Lydia was STARVED. After spending most of the day exercising hard in the Quidditch tryouts, she was famished. Her stomach grumbled unhappily at her as she traversed the lower corridors. No way would she be able to make it until dinner without eating something! Ok, so she'd heard the kitchens were down here somewhere...Wait, was that a picture of a pear? That sounded familiar. She stopped and stared at the pear and then glanced down the rest of the corridor. There were no doors. So there was probably a trick...
Lydia tapped the pear experimentally. Nothing. But did the pear just twitch? Hmm...Lydia rubbed her finger across a section of the pear. Ok, maybe it was just her imagination, but she could swear she just heard the pear giggle! Was this pear...ticklish? Lydia tickled another spot, and the pear definitely giggled this time. Just like that the painting swung outward to reveal the entrance to the kitchens!
Lydia walked inside. She wasn't alone. There was another girl looking through a refrigerator. She looked like maybe she was a 1st year too, but her robes were trimmed in yellow. Hufflepuff. Lydia didn't know any Hufflepuffs yet. Suddenly a house elf appeared near the other girl and asked if she needed anything. Lydia liked the house elves, but she thought it was sort of sad that they seemed to be only servants.
"Oh hello," said Lydia to both the house elf and the girl. "You must be hungry too. Find anything good yet? Mmm, do they have pizza? I could really go for a slice of pizza."
Somehow Lydia didn't think Hogwarts would have her favorite Muggle food, and that was pretty sad. The Wizarding World was even more amazing than she could have dreamed, but Muggles still got a few things right too. Like pizza!

It was the saddest thing. Years of friendship and Jessa was nowhere closer to liking that salamander. It wasn't anything the poor thing had ever done, she simply.......didn't like him. Thankfully she'd learned to at least be tolerant. Now she never made faces when told Scamander was around or would be shortly. The bowtruckle she was far less reserved about...even if that didn't particularly mean liking either.
Come to think of it, Jessa wasn't particularly found of most creatures, not while they were alive anyway--not including Dexter and Mew. They'd made a special place in her heart and were reaping the rich rewards of never having any experiment done on them but ANYWAY ice-cream while she tried to forget everything that needed forgetting. Instinctively, the Ravenclaw levitated the strawberry flavoured tub from the others Derf had grabbed. This one would be a must. "What sort of toad is he? Does he do anything special? How'd they get him to sing? Does he know what he's singing about and when he's doing it?" Naturally she had a ton of questions....but not enough time or diligence to join the choir just to find out.
No thanks.
"I can't believe all the homework we've already got. My brain's only just gotten back into the rhythm of restricted thinking." It was like some of the Professors had eagerly sat around during the summer coming up with various ways to bog them down. "I probably won't do it....or I'll do half just to make sure I don't have too many Professors complaining about me at one time." What was the point? She'd already learned it all.

Scrub, scrub, scrub... Pips looks toward Argyle to see if he needs help, Pips loves to help the studentsies. But first, Pips must clean the kitchen from the start of term feast he must. But more studentsies come in, he looks at all of the studentsies and sees Argyle’s pot overflowing. “Oh no Pips must stop the mess.” *hiccup* Pips scurries toward the pot to turn the burner down for Argyle.
There, she had managed to get inside of the schools’ kitchen for what had to be the first time that day. Yes, the house elves were likely busy but for once, she wasn’t there for them. – she was there because of the war against hunger. Her own hunger, because she was practically starving and no one had time to make it to the great hall…now she was there, looking around making hungry eyes at everything.
Yes, e v e r y t h i n g, even a poor unsightly raw potato didn’t escape her viewing. That thing looked sickly, there was no way Beth would eat it. She would rather starve than eat it, and she really didn’t want to starve…or to have to find a pack of starving children to roam in or a circus to feed her.
"I know, we'll get food soon" she muttered talking to her own roaring cavern of a stomach.

The three regular meals at Hogwarts were never enough for Daehyun. Well, of course, it was more like eat-all-you-can, but he didn't want to stuff himself as if he's never seen food before in his life. His mother had drilled good manners into him from an early age. But that didn't mean he never sneaked into the kitchen in between meals to grab a muffin or some fruit on the rare occasions when he decided to try a healthy snack for a change.
He was inside the kitchen, on a scavenging mission to find something appealing to eat, when he heard the voice belonging to a girl he'd met not long ago... who was comforting her growling stomach. From behind her, he pursed his lips to keep himself from giggling at the sight, before beginning to feel guilty for intruding on such a private moment.
"Beth, hi!" he said, praying he wouldn't scare the girl as he walked into her line of sight to stand before her. "Been staying away from hungry hampers, I hope?" he greeted teasingly. He wasn't normally one to tease, but their first enounter had been memorable, to say the least. Besides, he wasn't that mean to mention her chat with her own stomach. He did it, too, sometimes.
Beth didn’t even hear the door open, that was how loud her stomach was right now. Or maybe it was that she wasn’t even paying attention to anything save for the hungry growls her stomach was making. That was, she wasn’t paying attention until someone said her name – well, helloooooo person.
She turned almost instantly and couldn’t help but notice that little twinkle of humor in his face. Darn it, merlins soggy…whatevers he had heard her hadn’t he? He’d also seen her flail her way into the – nooooooooo he brought it up that stupid lion boy.
Okay fine, he wasn’t stupid, it was probably a smart way to diffuse the situation but all ti did was make her awkward – mentally for a second. Because clearly, she wasn’t actually awkward in person. Taking a moment, a second really she just put her usual smirk in place and tipped her head at him like she always did with new prospective friends. ”Oh…no, actually I moved into one the other day” she smiled making sure to add a bit of those extra-special eye lash flutters as if she were reliving a dream-like moment, ”its really warm in there…cozy, if you want I can have you over for tea?” she offered, clearly she was joking.
No sane person would have tea in a pile of warm laundry, it would just spill...and then their laundry pile home would be ruined and wet and eventually, eventually it would mold. No one, no one at all, wanted to live in mold.

Daehyun tried hard to play along with the story she'd begun, but really he couldn't hold it in anymore and burst into laughter at her antics. He was glad he hadn't upset her with his comment - hoped he hadn't - and that she could freely joke about it. The offer sounded appealing, though. "I do love tea. Just not the fruity ones, please," he pointed out with a scrunch of his nose. "I would love to drop by." And he would bring a hamper warming present.
Right on queue, his own stomach joined in on the delightful symphony started by Beth's. "Were you going to cook anything?" Because cooking was one of the few skills he was beginning to master.
Flair was an understatement, hell, she was dramatics. She practically lived and breathed it, even down to her not so secret heart’s desire of being a star – if she could summon a bunch of glitter explosions wherever she walked, well, she would. But that was the thing, she didn’t. really like glitter, loose glitter got everywhere and was hellish.
Beth couldn’t help but smile when Daniel said he loved tea, tea was brilliant. Spilling it on your laundry pile home…still not so much. ”ooh, wonderful, and what is wrong with fruity teas?” she asked and put her hands on her hip as if she were offended, she wasn’t. Not in the least bit. ”I mean…one of my favorite is lemon tea, lemon ginger to be exact with a good amount of honey.” she nodded, before flailing her hand and continuing ”waiiiit! I forgot one I had it once, it was amazing lemon-ginger turmeric tea…its really good for you and everything” the amount of honey she had added wasn’t as good-for-you but who drank unsweetened tea? Well, she did sometimes not always but never with lemon tea.
”making it?....oh, I’m not sure I’ve never been the most proficient chef” she sighed a little too dramatically before grinning over to him again, ”I was debating making cheese toast if you want one? I mean…its at least food right?” and who said she needed something fancy. "unless you want to make something...and I could say help?" she asked giving him a wide-eyed almost startled look as she did so, this time, it wasn't a means to get anything. It was more the fact that cooking, in general, was so new it was almost scary to her.

... why, yes. Of course, it was his luck that Beth's favourite was fruity. And as she went on, he decided he was definitely not telling her he didn't like fruity teas because of their sweetness. He loved honey, alright, but not in his tea. Putting his hands up in defence, he said, "Nothing wrong with fruity teas, I love them, what was I even saying?" Silly him. "I could try some of that lemon-ginger turmeric tea when you invite me over."
He had to bite his lower lip to keep a smile from spreading across his face. By the sound of it, Beth seemed like a disaster in the kitchen, so he wasn't going to let her make toast in his presence. And the puppy eyes sealed the deal. "C'mon, I'll make something," he said, already headed towards the refrigerator. He peeked inside before turning to Beth. "What do you want to have?" As long as she wasn't expecting overly fancy stuff... he could do more than toast.
Tinka arrived back in the kitchens, where she wanted to be more than any other place, and almost ran into two students. "Mr. Daniel and Miss Anabeth. Tinka sorry." She made her quick apology as she scanned the room, looking for Algamus.
She had spent another morning cleaning up where Toddles should have been. Her little hands shook with anger and she hand't had a single chance to use her whisk the entire day.
She hadn't checked the kitchen yet, and the more Quinn thought about it, the more it seemed to make sense. If you wanted to hide a secret room from everyone here, the perfect place would be the kitchen. There wouldn't be much traffic besides the House Elves, and those that did find their way into the kitchen were there to find food, not secret rooms. It was a thought, but a thought worth following up on. Besides, she needed a break from her housemates.
Quinn pushed open the door leading to the kitchen and immediately spotted her best friend with the boy from the laundry room. This, again, got a questioning raise of an eyebrow as she looked between them, her mind obviously spooling toward some theory.
Then she turned and smiled at Tinka. "Hello again, Tinka."
Turning back to her best friend and lion boy, she continued to glance between them, pondering. First the laundry room, now the kitchen? She bite her bottom lip, a gesture Beth knew well. "Are you two snogging? Is that why I keep finding you together in out of the way places? Should I leave so you can get back to it then?"
He hadn’t offended her about the teas, not really. Beth just watched of course as the boy seemingly backtracked his comments – that, it only made her smile more and more. He was a cutie, really, and maybe her flair for the dramatics had confused him? She didn’t know, not really. Still, she grinned at him. ”please, you don’t have to worry about it” she laughed nudging him, ”I was mostly teasing because…well, I could?” she admitted with a sheepish grin, ”and of course, you’re always invited for tea,” besides, tea was good.
Even if that tea was kind of…gross, and only really good because it kept you nice and healthy. Still, when Daniel felt into that trap, the simply innocently laid make-food-for-me trap all Beth did was happily bounce on her feet and quickly throw her arms around him a surprise hug. ”I’m not sure, maybe you should surprise me?” she beamed, her arms still flung over the boy’s shoulder when the unthinkable happened.
Quinn….and Tinka.
Tinka got a kind smile, and Quinn got a startled yell. ”QUINN YOU NEED TO STOP SNEAKING UP ON ME” Beth hissed out as she shifted away from Daniel, her face now quite splotchy. ”no, I’m not…we’re not – no…nope, nothing happened he offered to make me food and he’s…we’re, he’s…friend? We’re friends?” she stumbled over her words her face not helping with any of the awkwardness going on right now. "sorry Tinka," she squeaked out before giving Daniel a sorry smile, "sorry...if i um deafened you" she offered before giving Quinn a look.

Tinka! He'd stopped moving just in time to avoid toppling over the small house elf, immediately grinning as he crouched down to be at the same level. "No need to apologize, Tinka." Seeing that the house elf was distressed, he asked, "Were you looking for something? Can I help you find it?"
Just as he'd straightened back up from the uncomfortable position, Beth's arms flung around him, causing him to freeze instantly, as he was not used to being in such close proximity with pretty much anyone outside his family. Everything she'd said next had become white noise at the back of his head and, with perfect timing, her friend showed up.
And thought they were snogging.
At her comment, Daehyun broke into a coughing fit, having choked on his own intake of breath, flushing a shade darker than the red on his uniform. "WHAT- no, err-uhm, what are you- of course we weren't-what-" Beth, still attached to him like a koala, didn't help matters when she shouted at her friend so close to his ear, causing his very distressed self to jump in surprise.
Trying to focus back on breathing normally, he barely registered Beth's words, numbly nodding when she wanted to confirm that they were friends. "It's-it's okay." His ear was definitely not okay, but he couldn't hold it against the Slytherin girl, as she'd been startled herself. Turning to look at her friend Quinn, he muttered, "Right, food. I was going to make-yeah. You want some, too?" he finished off, his voice having become a squeak by then, already peeking inside the refrigerator for available supplies.
All through their painfully unconvincing rebuttals, Quinn simply watched them without even trying to mask her skepticism. "Uh. Huh." Quinn bit her bottom lip even more, trying to suppress the smile wanting to form as she leaned her back against the wall just inside the door.
"Just be glad I abhor gossip," or just simply talking to most people at all. "It's nothing to be ashamed of," even if she still found the whole idea rather gross herself. "But if you want some advice, you should work on your cover stories more. Or pick places more out of the way than this. Well, the laundry room was a good choice, it just didn't work out, did it? But the kitchen? Kids come in here often enough. I'd try the broom closet in the entrance way next. That'd be my suggestion."
Oh, she was being offered food. Quinn promptly refused this with a shake of her head. "No. I really ought to leave and let you both get back to snogging. It's the polite thing to do, you know?" She was biting her bottom lip rather hard currently.
Beth hadn’t meant to yell in Daniel’s ear, obviously, his ear was a casualty of war. Clearly, she didn’t even notice the way he had frozen in that ill-fated hug…nor did she think SHE was the reason for that coughing fit – she was almost concerned. He was making food for her, she needed to be more concerned. ”are…are you okay?” she asked, him as she again gave him a wide-eyed look.
”um…sorry if I deafened you” she repeated, after all she wasn’t exactly okay either. ”Quinn, you need to not sneak up…and…” no, no she wasn’t going to say that. If she had said what she was thinking it would only dig a hole that didn’t need to be.
Stare….stare, blink. ”we weren’t snogging – he just pittied me ‘cause I was hungry and talking about making cheese toast” she admitted with a sigh, ”but if I ever plan on snogging anyone I’d take your advice on where to do it” she almost regretted saying that, but Quinn knew the snakelet didn’t want to give the poor house elves nightmares.
Beth nearly stomped over toward Quinn, ”c’mon he offered, and we weren’t snogging…but if we were is there really a – Beth stop talking…you’re making this worse” she didn’t mean to speak in third person, but honestly, in the moment it was the only thing that fit. She was making a mess.

"Uh. Huh." She actually knew they weren't, but this was more fun, and Quinn was putting her exceptional acting talent to good use right now playing the skeptic. "Oh yeah. No. I believe you, fully. Not a single doubt at all. Nope." She held her hands up, defensively.
"Yep. Cheese toast, of course." Now she was nodding and kept on nodding. "I'll let you two get back to your not snogging," she said, spinning on her heel. On the way out, she gave them a little wave without turning around. "Remember, broom closet next time. Have fun."
This had been worth the trek down for the Ravenclaw tower.
Could Quinn be kind enough... and stop... talking... put an end to his misery... take some pity on him?
... no?
Daehyun's face had probably turned purple by then, and it only worsened as Quinn was a firm believer that he and Beth had, indeed, been snogging. "It's- no, it's not a-a cover story- we were most definitely not-" Merlin, save him. How did he even end up in that situation? And what had being in the laundry room anything to do with- did people actually sneak in to snog in there?! His poor, innocent soul was not prepared for his situation.
When Beth apologized once again for shouting in his ear, he dismissed it a quick shake of his head. "Don't worry about it." It was already forgotten, with all the other things going on. "Beth!" he squealed at the girl's comment. "You're- uhm- not really, you know- helping." He knew that she meant well, though.
Decisively turning one last time to the refrigerator, he started blindly pulling random ingredients out, saying, "Who wants pancakes!" It was more of a I'm-begging-you-to-change-the-subject statement, rather than a question. He hoped there was chocolate. Lots of it. He needed chocolate.
Beth’s face was hot, really hot, like in a fireplace hot…wow, why did Quinn feel the need to tease her constantly? Probably, really truly probably because she was more like a sister to her than a friend. ”you know I like cheese,” she nearly whimpered only after Quinn had already left.
”I babble when I get nervous” she admitted only to break the tension in the air, even though that wouldn’t break the tension. ”she’s left…” was all Beth managed to say when Quinn suddenly left the room – was this like…a secret revenge for not being housemates? No, Quinn was likely just enjoying the torment.
It was clear that Daniel wouldn’t have known cause he was facing the fridge. ”…do you want me to ask the house elves not to talk about what they heard or saw here today…they didn’t see anything clearly but I mean – gosh…” she was flustered already, still even. ”you don’t need a rumor that you’re snogging me…” she fiddled with her finger and with a laugh added, ”I don’t want any of this hurting you, obviously…cause, you’re nice and offered to make me food” she nodded and looked at him for a long moment.
Too long, ”and if you want to you can say we snogged if it makes it less awkward” she was a helpful snake....oh wait pancakes? "pancakes? did you say pancakes?" she asked excitedly.
