Joint Charms & Muggle Studies Lesson: A-camping We Will Go
It was on a mild Saturday, just after dinner, that the Charms/Muggle Studies lesson took place. The evening sun shone through the windows, bathing the charms classroom in a cozy early spring warmth. Just by looking outside, the weather seemed perfect for the camping trip the professors had planned!
Upon entering the room, the students were sure to notice that the timing wasn't the only thing odd about the lesson. All of the desks, including Professor Marchand’s, were gone, and the refreshment table at the back of the room was uncharacteristically empty. Instead, most of the room’s space was occupied by camping supplies. While waiting for the kiddos to arrive so that they could get this little adventure on the way, Kay was rechecking the supplies she and Gaston had secured, while Gaston arranged them neatly into small piles in the middle of the room. It wouldn’t do well for either professors or the kiddos if they were short of anything.
Each pile contained a pillow, sleeping bag, extra blanket, canteen full of water, a few various types of food, including a make-your-own s'mores kit, and a backpack that appeared too small to hold everything. Every other pile also included all the supplies needed to pitch a tent. The professors were finally satisfied that everything was set and exchanged an excited grin, before turning to wait for the first arrival.
OOC: Hiiii, everybody! Welcome to our lesson! Feel free to post your charrie arriving. Class will start in ABOUT 24 HOURS (1 AM EDT July 12)!
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Because this was still a lesson despite the late hour (he usually went to bed around 11 pm) Dorian had taken a nap before class so that he would be more energized.
Was that a mistake? Yes....
Instead of feeling energized, the fourteen year old felt even more sluggish and he hid a yawn behind this hand as he entered the classroom where they would gather first. "Morning" he greeted as he dragged himself inside and forced himself to not let out another yawn as he looked at the professors who seemed to have packed numerous bags for them all. He'd be impressed if this hadn't been a magical school cause surely they had done this with the use of magic.
Since there were no desks, Dorian sat down on the ground against the wall and crossed his legs. "I'm going to meditate" aka continue his nap till the others arrived.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy entered the Charms classroom, carrying with her two bags which she had bewitched with an Undetectable Extension Charm in order to fit her supplies. "Hello!" Daisy greeted both professors with a smile. Her eyes then fell upon Dorian who seemed to be asleep. She just shrugged her shoulders and found a spot near a wall.

A camping trip as part of a lesson?!
There was noway she was going to miss this. Rylee had waited for this day to arrive the moment she had heard about the lesson. Camping was something she loved to do. Nothing about it bothered her, fishing, sleeping on the ground in a sleeping bag beneath the stars, building a fire and then sitting around it cooking fish and making s'mores. It was always a great time for her and now she would get to be with all her friends too. She was definitely very excited.
The second year had on her jeans, hiking boots and large hoodie for comfort, her ginger locks left to hang down around her shoulders. With her bag slung over her shoulder that held everything she would need she entered the classroom with a bright smile on her face. Nothing was going to get her down and ruin this. "Good evening, Professors!" Rylee chirped excitedly. "Hi, Daisy," she offered the older girl a friendly smile and a wave.
A quick look around the room showed piles of camping things around and Dorian how was...sleeping? She was sure but she made her way over and sat down near him on the floor. "Hey, Declan." There was a playful smirk on her lips as she whispered the greeting, dropping her bag from her shoulder and setting it down on her lap. It was a good thing it was charmed to not only be super light but also with an extension charm her older sister had placed on it for her. She had certainly packed a ton of things into it earlier in the day when she was getting ready for this lesson/camping trip.

So admittedly Skylar was befuddled by the combination of Charms and Muggle Studies, for a simple reason that Muggle Studies forbade wand use. That and the combination lesson was taking place on the weekend. Now had this been months ago, it probably would have been a welcome distraction but with less then three months until graduation and NEWT exams, every moment she wasn't in scheduled classes or quidditch practice was accounted for with study preparations. Although technically this could be considered a scheduled class, but classes didn't ordinarily take place on the weekend. But it was fifty percent charms, which made all the more tolerable.
Dressed in comfortable clothes, wand holstered, hair pulled back in the usual mess of a state lately, Skylar headed to the charms classroom. Void of the usual desks and refreshments. Huh? Well she supposed it made sense, maybe.
"Hello Professors," she greeted of the pair.

It was Saturday night and she was ready to party. She bounced into the classroom, ready to get things started and halted at the sight. Her eyes darted around, taking in all of the piles of supplies, and wondered what exactly she had gotten herself into.
After quickly recomposing herself she flashed a bright smile and headed towards Daisy and Rylee. "Good evening Professor Stewart, Professor Marchand. Looks rather interesting in here. Those bags seem mighty small for all those supplies, but I bet there's some charm involved to make it work." Once she said it, she regretted it. She knew that there was a charm involved. Of course there was. It was a charms and muggles studies class. There were bound to be charms going on all over the place.
Moving right along, she focused her attention to her friends. "Hey Daisy, Rylee. How are you ladies doing this fine Saturday evening?" Her eye caught the Slytherin captain "Hi Skyler!" she gave a little wave to the older girl.
Gunnar admittedly enjoyed camping as well as many other outdoor activities, but that didn't change the fact that this was class, and on a Saturday of all days! Weekends were supposed to be reserved for free time and doing what he wanted. Not for having to go to class, no matter how much fun it was meant to be. So this really better be fun.
He noted that the classroom was devoid of the usual furnishings as heis eyes landed on the ordered piles of camping supplies. That made enough sense to the thirteen year old. He mumbled a greeting to both professors as he headed inside and nodded to a few that he knew as he passed them before going over to stand near his Quidditch captain.

Juni was pretty much over the moon excited about this camping trip lesson. It was about time that she had a truly relaxing lesson and this could be it. Hopefully this was it. Although she had never really really been on a camping trip she did enjoy camping or the things you did on a camping trip, hiking, bonfires, sleeping in. She wasn’t sure if that happened on camping trips but she would be the one to sleep in late while camping.
The fifth year headed into the charms classroom, which did not look much like a classroom at all at the moment. It looked just like what they were getting ready to go do. Camping supplies everywhere. It was probably also a good thing that she had dressed comfortably too. Hoodie, stretch pants it was almost like she was dressed for quidditch practice or just a day in the common room.
She smiled at the professors ”Good evening professors.” She head on around with her bag over her shoulder. She scanned the room to see who was here already. Once she seen the Slytherin captain and little Chloe’s brother, Ethan was his name right? Anyway, she walked over to Skylar. Smiled, ” I think this should be an interesting lesson, don’t you?” She hadn’t had much time to see her or speak to her in awhile, so now Juni was just going to take the time and hang out with her friend this lesson.

Camping was fun. Not that Stasya had gotten to go camping very much in her life, aside from sometimes being allowed to camp out on the beach near home overnight. But this was actual real camping, or at least that was what she’d assumed from the notice that had been posted about this lesson. The only difference this had from other field trips was the fact she was hoping there wouldn’t be any attacks. At the very least, she doubted there would be grindylows to deal with this time. Therefore, it had been a relatively excited tall blonde forth year who had made her way up to the Charms classroom after dinner, comfortably dressed in a long-sleeved t-shirt (that may or may not have had a unicorn printed on it), skinny jeans and boots, a fuzzy pink hoodie stowed in her school bag along with her prefect badge and a fresh stash of cookies. Just in case.
She had blinked in response to the state of the classroom as she’d arrived, though. Not that her surprise had lasted long, since it was Hogwarts, and she’d assumed they’d actually be having class outside. Camping and all. “Good evening Professor Marchand, Professor Stewart,” she greeted the two dark haired professors with a smile, heading deeper into the piles of supplies before finding a place to sit on the floor near one pile. That and giving the other students in the room a smile, plus a wave at Skylar. The Slytherin girl didn’t look very good…

CAMPING? They were going CAMPING? Chloe bounced into the classroom and gave both professors a huge grin, although they were wrapped up enough in their preparations that she might have gone unnoticed. Chloe waved anyway. "Hullo, professors! This is all for us?"
Chloe paused over one of the piles, and she took silent inventory without touching anything. Were they allowed to touch? Should she try for one of the piles with a tent? DID IT MATTER? Also, wasn't it weird to start out this late?

The first arrival happened to be Dorian. Kay was tempted to giggle a little at his greeting but that would be unprofessional. Instead, she settled for a grin. “Good evening, Mr. Katharos! I suppose it’s fine for you to catch a snooze before we leave... if your classmates will let you.’’ More of them were arriving and things were bound to get noisy soon.

Ronan had lost track of time and was now feeling like the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland. Luckily, he had packed his camping stuff the night before, so it was a simple thing to grab the large duffel bag and make a mad dash down to the Charms classroom. It was also a good thing that he was in pretty good shape, since the distance between the Gryffindor dorms in the seventh-floor tower and the classroom was pretty great. So great, in fact, that he had had to stop and catch his breath before entering. Once he was breathing normally again, he walked into the room with a "Hey!" The sight of the room didn't surprise him at all. It took a lot of space to sort out camping gear, obviously.
Honestly, he had only been camping once. It wasn't really his favorite thing, but then, he hadn't been with a huge group then, either. Just his aunt, uncle and cousins. So this was bound to be.....interesting.

Truth be told, Gaston was a little nervous about today's little excursion. He'd only been camping a few times in his life, plus there was the matter of a certain blue-eyed baby girl who was going to be very angry that her father wouldn't be home to put her to bed that night. He shook his head, trying to block out the thought of the tantrum Desiree was undoubtedly throwing before it made him too sad to concentrate. Now wasn't the time; the students were starting to arrive! He looked up just as Dorian arrived. Blink, blink. Morning? Had he missed something? "good evening, Mr. Katharos," he replied, his eyes following the boy as he sat down. Goodness, he hoped he wasn't too sleepy to pay attention to the lesson!

Daisy was next to appear. Her arrival was greeted with a beam from the Charms professor, though his expression changed slightly upon seeing the not one but two bags she had. Somehow he had a suspicion Daisy was a bit ahead of the game there. "Hello, Miss Swan!" he greeted.

He supposed it was a rather strange setup... and he couldn't help but feel a bit guilty about the lack of refreshments. "Good evening, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova," he greeted.

And here was another student bouncing into the classroom. Gaston smiled; the excitement was rubbing off on him! "Hello, MIss Kettleburn!" he said, returning the girl's smile with one of his own, but before he could answer her question, Kay beat him to it. He simply nodded in reply; nothing more he could add to that.

So great, in fact, that he had had to stop and catch his breath before entering. Once he was breathing normally again, he walked into the room with a "Hey!" Honestly, he had only been camping once. It wasn't really his favorite thing, but then, he hadn't been with a huge group then, either. Just his aunt, uncle and cousins. So this was bound to be.....interesting.
Gaston checked his watch. It was almost timet o get going, but he decided to wait another minute or two for stragglers. And it was a good thing he had! Just as he looked up from his watch, Ronan appeared, right on time. "Good evening, Mr. Carter," he greeted.
Gaston glanced at his watch again; 7:00 on the dot. Satsified that here were no more stragglers, he aimed his wand at the door, and it closed with a quiet click. He made his way through the piles of supplies to stand at the front of the room and addressed the group, "Hello, class! Professor Stewart and I are glad you could be here; I hope you're just as excited for this trip as we are!" He exchanged a quick look with his colleague before going on, "Sorry about the lack of refreshments. In the supply piles, you'll find some snacks; you may enjoy some of them now if you wish, but keep in mind that we'll be traveling to our campground by Portkey very soon."
He waited a moment for the students' undivided attention. "But before we leave, we have a bit of last-minute packing to do. If you haven't already done so, please stand beside one of the supply piles - it doesn't matter whether or not you pick one with a tent. The contents of the pile are yours for this trip. Now, very quickly, who can tell me a spell you could use to fit all of these supplies into the one small bag provided?"
OOC: Sorry for the minor delay...tech issues. Anyway, class has officially started! Feel free to join any time; just pretend your charrie has been here all along unless you want IC consequences for a late arrival. You have ABOUT 24 HOURS (2 AM EDT July 13) to answer the question.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy stood beside a supply pile with a tent since she didn't have one of her own. She was feeling quite excited about the trip and beamed as Professor Marchand asked the question about a certain spell. Raising her hand, Daisy answered, "Well I did use the Undetectable Extension Charm on my bags in order to fit everything."
At the announcement of class starting, Emmalyn stopped chatting with her friends and focused her attention on the professors. She needed to pick a pile. Tent or no tent was the only real difference between them. Worried about not having a place to sleep, she skipped over to a supply pile containing a tent and staked her claim. If only she knew the proper charm to put on the bag to get it all to fit.
After Daisy answered, she put her hand in the air. "I know there is one, but I can't recall the name. I think it makes the bag bigger inside, or maybe it makes the supplies smaller? One of those." She shrugged her shoulders and grinned, hoping the professors were at least happy she was trying. Plus, it was after seven in the evening and there were snacks calling her name. She discovered it was even harder to focus on charms when her stomach was growling.
Mistook ooc time for ic lmao. But students are always tired so ayy

With his eyes closed and his head leaning against the wall, Dorian did not see the other students entering however he did recognise Rylee's voice. They were friends, of course he would recognise it even with his eyes closed. "Hey Rosie" he replied. The house elf given nicknames were really sticking weren't they? He didn't mind though.
He could hear more students entering the room but still didn't bother opening his eyes. Even when the professor asked a question, the Ravenclaw lazily held up his hand "Undetectable extension charm" he answered and only when he had to do something physical did he open his eyes and...well he didn't get up on fo his feet. He stayed seated and used his legs to shuffle forward on his behind until he was at a bag nearby. "Mine"

Skylar gave a small smile at the younger teammate of hers; he had done great wielding the bat last match and honestly, as captain and seventh year, at least she felt proud of something. He was going to be great, Skylar was sure of it. But for now, after acknowledging Stasya's wave and then the two professors greeting her, Skylar felt guilty at Marchand's question. How as she? That was a much more complicated question than it should have been and every day was a learning process, of her trying to figure things out, to be responsible. It was a constant struggle, really, and as she sorted through the millions of thoughts, she was grateful that they were moving on. Perhaps she'd discuss with him later. Or not. It all depended.
Undetectable expansion charm. Yes, but there were other charms too that could be useful. Unrelated, but as she found last August when packing for school, the simple packing charm was extremely helpful as she'd been of age to use it for the first time.
"Reducio, shrinking the objects could be used as well."

Maddie had been, believe it or not, somewhat quiet up until this point. She liked her Saturdays off---a LOT. She had wanted to sleep in and pretty much do nothing all day, but apparently two of her professor's had different ideas. At first, Maddie wasn't really excited about coming to class today. Now that things were underway, and she had an idea what was happening, she was SUPER EXCITED.
"I'm going to agree with the people saying Undetectable Extension Charm," she said, her hand in the air. "I remember reading about how Hermione Granger once used it to fit a ton of stuff in a handbag, and it seems to be really similar to what we need to do today." Even still, Maddie had no idea how to cast an Undetectable Extension Charm. As she thought about that, she moved to stand beside a supply pile. Now then. This one was officially claimed.

So Chloe had already sort of claimed a pile, since she'd been examining one (but no touching)... that made the pile hers. Chloe crouched beside it and gently began touching everything with light fingertips, mentally making an inventory of what the professors wanted them to have for this trip.
Oh, hmm? "What about pack? Like, my mum always helps me get my trunk ready, and it just sort of sorts itself out like a puzzle having the pieces arrange themselves."

It was time to get started!
Kay shot an excited grin at Gaston. He would be leading things off so in the meanwhile, she would just hang back here... next to these supplies. The spotlight was all yours, Gaston! When he mentioned the supplies, she felt sort of like a model from that old muggle game show, ‘The Price Is Right’, as an arm was raised to indicate them. Of course, her other hand was not on her hip but it was jammed in her pocket so it might have given the implication.
Turning her attention to each of the kiddos as they provided their answers, the dark-haired woman was not at all surprised at the answers being presented which were both correct and creative.
Still, she did nothing to give what the answer she and Gaston were looking for was.

Slate was excited. Camping was fun and he hadn't been in years. He shot Juni the occasional excited grin as he waited rather impatiently for the fun to get started.
Too bad it was attached to a lesson.
At least it was charms though. That was an upside. He raised his hand, "What about an expansion or enlarging charm?" he suggested. Which, maybe wasn't that much different than an extension one? Other than, he guessed, the results would be pretty visible.

Oh goody! They were about to begin.
Septimus was going to ignore the snacks for now, deciding to save them for later when they were actually away on their trip. Instead he simply stood by a pile of supplies as directed, briefly noting the absence of a tent or pieces of a tent in his selection. Oh well, he thought to himself with a shrug. The weather was alright to not totally need one. And Professor Marchand had already mentioned it wasn’t necessary for them all to have one.
As for the packing, the second year noticed the small bag when the act was mentioned. Too small for everything for sure. The spell escaped him but apparently not some of his classmates as they spoke up in answer to the posed question. Extension charm. Undetectable extension charm that is. Something to give the bag the effects of a Mary Poppins-type pack. Shrinking worked well enough two, the Ravenclaw supposed, but he was for the extension charm.

Daisy's hand was the first Gaston saw go up, and he called on her. So she'd already used the Undetectable Extension Charm. He was impressed... if not also slightly worried, given the rules regarding those spells. He wouldn't want her to get into trouble! "Well, it seems you're a bit ahead of the game then, Miss Swann!" he said with a small smile. "Nicely done."

"I believe you're thinking of two different spells," he said, returning her grin. "The one to make the bag bigger is the Undetectable Extension Charm; the one that makes the supplies smaller is the Shrinking Charm. Either one would be useful today, though in the case of the shrinking charm, we'd need an additional spell to return the supplies to their normal size. Excellent answer, Miss Walsh!"

Gaston was hoping Dorian would wake up a bit once the lesson began, but that didn't appear to be the case. Here was another answer that had Gaston impressed! Not only had Maddie given a correct answer, but she'd also provided a historical example. He beamed, nodding in reply to her. "Very good, Miss Kemp," he said. "Thank you for adding that bit of historical information as well - you're correct, by the way. Hermione Granger used an Undetectable Extension Charm so she could carry all the supplies she thought she'd need on the hunt for Voldemort's Horcruxes."

"That's a useful spell indeed, Miss Kettleburn," he said, beaming. And he would know; that spell saved him countless hours packing his trunk over the summer, which meant more time for his wife and daughter. "Though a packing charm alone wouldn't make objects fit into a container too small to hold them; we'd need to make the bag larger or the supplies smaller first. Kudos on the original answer!"

Gaston called on Slate upon seeing his hand up, and the answer earned a smile and approving nod from the professor. "Yes, Mr. Ryker, that would certainly work," he replied, "though as a matter of interest, were you thinking of the enlargement charm Engorgio or the enlarging spell variation of the Undetectable Extension Charm that is sometimes used to make vehicles, such as cars, accomodate more people? Either spell would work, though Engorgio would be much less inconspicuous."

Ah, here was a quiet one. No matter... maybe the boy would have something to say later on. The important thing was that he appeared to be paying attention. Gaston gave Septimus a quick encouraging smile before moving on.
Gaston cast a quick glance back at Kay, returning her grin, and he had to cough to stifle a giggle as she "modeled" the supplies as he mentioned them. After all the answers had come in, he gave another few seconds for the students to turn their attention back to him before speaking, "Well done, class! All of the spells you mentioned would help us pack our supplies, but, as most of you guessed, today we'll be practicing the Undetectable Extension charm."
He paused a moment before going on, "The effects of this spell are threefold: it enlarges the interior area of the object without affecting the exterior, makes the contents of the object lighter, and, as the name implies, magically disguises itself from all but the caster. The enlargement spell is a variation of this, but the spells differ in that the Undetectable Extension charm hides itself, wears off slower, and is much more difficult to cast. Miss Kemp mentioned earlier that Hermione Granger once used this spell; other notable historical examples of its use include Newt Scammander's famous suitcase and Arthur Weasley's flying Ford Anglia." Merlin, he would've loved to have that... but this wasn't the time to have a fanboy moment over flying classic cars.
Gaston waited a minute to give the students time to absorb the information, then continued, "Theoretically, one could fit a hundred wizards into one bathroom using this spell. For this reason, it raises concerns over the Statute of Secrecy and is heavily regulated by the Ministry. Under normal circumstances, the spell is only to be used in the manufacture of objects approved by the Ministry, but we have a special exception for teaching purposes. The small bags beside your supply piles were originally made with an Undetectable Extension Charm in place, but I've removed it for the purpose of the lesson. Your job is to place the charm back on the bags, and pack your supplies into them."
He removed his wand from its holster and summoned one of the bags from a vacnat supply pile. "To cast the Undetectable extension Charm, point your wand at the bag and say the incantation Capacious extremis," he said, and with a wave of his wand, the incantation and pronunciation appeared in big letters on the blackboard. He turned his attention back to the bag, once again aiming his wand. "Capacious extremis." He picked up a nearby sleeping bag that appeared trice the size of the bag and easily placed it inside to demonstrate the effects of the spell.
"I'll give you time to practice the Undetectable Extention Charm on your bag - ONLY use this spell on the bag provided with your supply pile!" he explained the activity. "Once you're done, pack your bag and wait until the others finish; then we'll be on our way to the campground!" Oh, one last thing... "Packing with magic is not required for full credit, but if you want to try it, the spell is, as Miss Kettleburn mentioned, pack; the wand movement is a simple point." He performed the spell on the same bag he'd used for his other demonstration, and the supplies from the vacant pile fitted themselves into the space inside. "You have fifteen minutes starting... NOW!"
OOC: Mini activity time! All you have to do for full credit is attempt the Undetectable Extension Charm on your bag and pack all the supplies in your pile, either manually or magically. If you have questions, please indicate in the title of your post, and Ali or I will reply asap. You have BETWEEN 60 - 72 HOURS (3 PM July 15 - 3 AM EDT July 16 ) to finish; then Ali will move us on to the next part.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Oh dear. Why had she cast the spell when she could have packed her bags the Muggle way? Now Daisy was regretting this whole stupid trip. She pointed her wand at her own bags and removed the Undetectable Extension Charm from them. It was lucky that she hadn't packed much.
She then aimed her wand at the supply bag provided and angrily said, "Capacious extremis!" Once the spell had taken effect, Daisy placed the supplies inside her bag, muttering under her breath.
Seriously? The professors really expected her to be able to cast a spell as difficult as the Undetectable Extension charm? Her heart sank. She had hoped for a fun class. She had hoped to be successful in the class. She had hope for a more Muggle Studies heavy class. Her hopes were crushed and the lesson had hardly started.
She flopped down on the floor, next to her pile of supplies, and poked the bag with her wand. She looked between the bag and the pile of supplies, wondering how she was going to be able to tetris it all inside one tiny bag. With a frustrated huff, she decided she would at least try the charm.
She rolled over the incantation in her mind several times before attempting it out-loud. Once ready, she pointed her wand at the tiny bag and whispered “Capacious extremis.” Nothing seemed to have happened. The bag looked exactly the same, but it was supposed to look the same. Figuring the only way to know for sure would be to try and cram one of the much larger objects inside, she reached for the tent. The end of the tent only made its way about six inches into the bag before hitting firm resistance. Nope. Didn’t work.
With her wand in hand once again, she commanded “Capacious extremis” once again. Her mind focused on the bag becoming bigger, yet staying the same size. She hoped visualizing the end result would help strengthen the spell. She tried the tent again, but the same outcome resulted. No dice. It was simply not working.
With great frustration, she started packing the smallest items into the bag, hoping to fit as much as possible and being careful to not miss any of the snacks. Those were the most important supplies in the pile. She knew she would be able to carry the sleeping bag in one hand and the tent in the other. However, that would post a problem depending on how they were traveling. She wouldn’t have a free hand to use her wand or grab a portkey or toss floo powder. Unsure of how to continue, she glanced up towards Professor Stewart with eyes pleading for help.
