For those who belong in Hufflepuff House, in the middle of the Great Hall is where your table awaits. Gold banners containing an embroidered black badger float above the polished table in honour of the loyal Helga Hufflepuff. Already placed on the tables are silver plates with accompanying cutlery and goblets. All that is missing right now are the mountains of food and pitchers containing your favourite beverages.

Though your stomach might be growing as you take a seat on one of the long benches next to the table, it is important to not get hangry -- gnawing your arm away or jabbing your fork repeatedly on the surface of the table will do no good whatsoever. Give everyone some time to get settled in and wait for Headmistress Hawthorne to deliver her speech. Keep yourself preoccupied by catching up with your fellow housemates or those who are visiting from the other tables until it is time to sink your teeth into the hearty and delicious meal prepared by the house-elves.

The train ride to Hogsmeade had been....something else. The events of the prefect's compartment really being the more subdued part of the whole ride - though the fifth year had mostly tuned out whatever in-denial bromance was going on between Ronan and Flynn because there had been an Abey in the compartment with a BADGE. Most everything else had faded into the background, though he was reminded as he entered the Great Hall that he really needed to talk to Zoryn to see what was going on with her. Which was why he had swung by the Gryffindor table on the way over to pass her a chocolate frog based note and helped contribute to the reasons behind his lateness.

Though the majority of his reasons were because, like usual, he had hung back to help with unloading trunks and cages from the luggage car along with helping first years get into their boats. It was always surreal doing that, his own first boat ride playing so vividly in his mind each night of the feast and even helped bring a smile to his face despite how anxious he was feeling about this coming year. Though Scamander's presence in his pocket helped loads.

"Evening everyo---WOAH!" And before the blonde could finish his greeting he was finding himself ducking and covering as an owl swooped in over the Hufflepuff table. Bit late in the evening for the post, wasn't it? Not to mention it being absurdly early in the term as well...

His bright blues followed the owl's flight as it came to a stop by Daisy, so naturally all his attention was on her as she opened and....oh.

Forgoing the rest of the greetings to the table, Derf hurried over to the fourth year's side and promptly slipped into the vacant spot beside her on the bench. "Daisy?" he asked gently, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Reese was quick tp realize that his house was indeed the chattiest and friendliest of houses at Hogwarts... In fact, it took him al of about thirty seconds to deduce this.. His bum hadn't even warmed the bench where he sat and he had already been welcomed to Hufflepuff like five times.. All of which was accompanied with big beamy, excited smiles and waves and all that jazz.

So, he of course followed suit and returned their kind hellos and said his thanks for the open arms welcome. He did all of this hiding the fact that he was so perturbed that he was placed in, of all houses, this one.. Actually, what he was was disappointed.. What he'd like to do right now is go and stomp on that ragged old sad excuse for a Sorting Hat.. That would teach it to go mis-sorting kids..

" When does the food show up anyhow? ", he asked as he looked to the older girl with the shining Prefect badge. " I'm half starved and this is taking forever..", the hungry little baby badger asked her.

Lex was having a wonderful time at the opening feast so far, when suddenly- WHOOSH!! She heard the sound of flapping wings nearby. She ducked as an owl flew over her head. It landed in front of her friend Daisy, and a sinking feeling came to Lex's stomach. She watched nervously as Daisy opened the letter, and saw her reaction to reading it.

Lex's face went as white as a sheet. She could guess what this letter was about. "Oh no," she whispered, covering her mouth with her hand, shocked. "Oh, Daisy, I'm so sorry." Her new friend was crying now, and Lex couldn't help her own eyes filling up with a few tears as well.

"Daisy, please, please let me know if there's anything I can do for you right now," she said softly as she moved her hand away from her mouth and placed it gently on Daisy's arm where the owl had just been. "I'm here for you." That sounded so cliché. Lex knew that nothing she said could make Daisy feel better right now, but she figured it would be meaningful to Daisy to know she had support here.

Kimi saw the owl land in front of Daisy and could see his friend was upset and said "Everything okay Daisy i hope that wasn't bad news"

She continued to happily chatter with her new and old friends, not noticing the owl until it had landed next to her. She looked to Daisy with worried eyes. An owl visiting during the feast couldn't be bringing good news. Her heart sank as she thought about their conversation on the train about Daisy's ill father.

"What is it?" she asked as she watched her sweet friend open the letter. It wasn't good news at all. She watched, feeling completely helpless, as her friend started to cry. "Is he?" was all she could get out. She didn't know how to say the words.

She slid even closer to her friend, offering a hug if she wanted. There were no words to express how sorry she was or that could help her friend feel better. "Do you need me to get someone for you? I can find a professor if you want."

Reese was waiting for an answer when he saw an owl land next to the girl he'd just been introduced to and then tears.. With that he decided to retract from the little group of girls and went back to his original spot at the end of the bench.

He cast a longing look over at the Lion's table.. He wanted to be sitting next her instead of by himself.. And it was settling in just how very far away from home he was now... And his mind went to his foxes, Pulsar and Radar, the den he had dug out with them and all the fun outdoorsy things he could be doing if he were there instead.. He knew for sure, that he could get a sandwich right about now too if he were there as well!!

What was taking so long?!!.. Anytime with the food, please!

After trying to spend the train ride by herself before finally giving in and sitting with her twin Naia and her friends for the last bit of it, Regina...felt a little bit less overwhelmed by the start of her fifth year. Only a little bit, though. It was still completely terrifying, especially after the awful summer she'd had. There were just so many things she needed to worry about, it felt like she'd implode before the end of term.

But right now she just needed to take a deep breath and focus on getting through the feast. Take it one day at a time, her mom had said. Except she always needed to think at least a few days in advance, there was no time for ignoring the future, but...but yeah, one day at time. She would try.

The fifth year had tried to be one of the last people off the train, just to make sure she didn't wind up being the first person at the Hufflepuff table. She wanted to attract as little attention as possible right now, so she slipped into the last group of students trickling into the Great Hall and took the nearest empty seat.

Only now did she look around at all the tables, spotting many familiar faces as well as many new ones too. Regina did also notice a girl at her table looked like she was crying. The girl was further down the table though, and Regina didn't feel like she was in a suitable mood to actual comfort someone else. Plus, there were quite a few people focusing on the girl already, Derf among them, so Regina would let them deal with it. She did still hope the Hufflepuff would be okay though.

Daisy continued to shake with emotion as her friends surrounded her. "M-my father has passed away. My aunt said that my mother wants me to continue my education but how can I?! As people began flocking around Daisy - how very Hufflepuff, yeah? - Derf felt anxious on her behalf. At least, if the roles were reversed he would not want attention drawn to his situation and would have liked to just be left alone. Though he still did not know yet just WHAT his friend's situation was...he was sure it was bleak. It looked as though a dementor were hovering right over the younger girl's shoulder and Derf wished nothing more than to have the ability to cast even a wisp of a patronus on her behalf.

"D-Daisy..." he murmured, swallowing thicking as his hand on her shoulder gave a proper squeeze. "Here...come with me. We can go up to the dais now and speak with Professor Myers, yeah?" The fifth year wasn't exactly going to take no for an answer and his hand was already sliding in to one of hers as she swirled around in his seat to make it easier to stand.

Bel had been about to thank Daisy for her congratulations about the whole Quidditch thing when an owl arrived and everything got super awkward. Bel didn't want to crowd her dormmate and also she didn't really know what to say. What DID you say to news like that? Especially when there were crowds around? She would talk to her quietly later in the dorms maybe. That's if Daisy was staying. She would, right? Bel hoped so. The distractions of school, plus being around friends, would help her get through things, wouldn't they? Daisy was handling it better than Bel would, if the situation was reversed, that was for sure.

It would be awkward to say that she was looking forward to seeing her dormmate at tryouts right now huh? Bel kept her mouth shut, not wanting to say the wrong thing and upset Daisy, but she was paying attention and her expression was one of empathy and disbelief. Derf at least had things in hand. Hopefully it wouldn't be too much of a downer for the new students... or anyone else. She knew Daisy wouldn't want that either.

Holy hopping hippogriffs...today had been emotionally draining and precisely none of it had any real direct coloration with himself. Well, save for the emotional strain he felt seeing his friends in distress that is. The worst part being that there was little he could do to piece back together broken hearts, you know? And his Reparo required much more practice to be able to mend anything.

"Yeah, sure, of course," he nodded while ruffling his hair with his one hand as the other took the letter from her. He figured he could just, you know, slip this to Professor Myers and it would explain everything. Though he wasn't so sure about the Headmistress getting involved...from his personal experience she had had the emotional range of a Pogrebin on a good day. "You just sit and drink that water, yeah? I'll be back in a bit." Hopefully with Professor Myers tagging along. Maybe the man would let Hattie escort Daisy back to the common room early or something.

And he was trying REALLY hard not to pass judgement upon Daisy's aunt, who seemed cold and distant in this letter...though perhaps it was a coping mechanism. But he reckoned Daisy was entitled to at least a weekend home. How else would she be able to say good bye? Staying in the castle when you lost like this? What a load of dragon dung.

Throwing Bel a quick look as he scurried by, Derf hurried with his long legs towards the front of the Hufflepuff table to ascend the dais.

Her sad eyes remained on her friend. "I'll sit with you while Derf goes to get Professor Myers." She scooted even closer to Daisy. "Don't you worry about anything. We will take care of you." She hoped Derf would hurry and get their head of house.

It was such a sad way to start the term. Part of her wanted to celebrate with Bel, Lex, Reese, and all of the other Hufflepuffs, but she was far too sad for her friend to do more than simply sit next to Daisy and try and comfort her.

The thought of her one of her parents passing, then being informed about it by owl at school was simply too much for her second year mind to wrap around. That, combined with the fact that she hadn't seen or heard from her parents in over a year was beyond depressing. A few sympathetic tears slipped from her chocolaty brown eyes.

Oh.

Well. Things had developed pretty quickly. Hattie didn't even feel like she had blinked and things had gone very dramatic. The blonde felt for Daisy. She honestly didn't know how she would feel if she found out something like this at the feast. Everyone was around, and people were probably staring. It was not good. And it wasn't really how she had wanted, or thought, the feast would go.

She watched Derf go off, and bite her lip. She should probably do something. People were crowding around, and she was sure Daisy didn't want all that attention. "Maybe we should give Daisy a bit of space guys...." The seventh year murmured to her fellow hufflepuffs, hoping a few of them would sit down so that Daisy wasn't overly crowded. Also, this was Professor Myers would be able to get to her easier.

And hopefully he would get here soon. For now, Hattie just stood, and watched what was happening, just in case she needed to intervene again.

Daisy was very appreciative to have her housemates supporting her but she had to admit that she was feeling a bit overwhelmed with this attention. She hated the fact that she had in her mind made opening feast festivities joyless. That was making her feel worse. She spoke to those around her, "Thank you for being here for me. I am sorry that I made the feast not a good one. Hopefully, I can be in the common room soon."

REese was so sick of waiting for the speech that he heard was going to have to happen before the food would appear... At least that's what his bestest friend and older sister AND she was also his cosmic twin.. They shared a birthday he thought it was so unfair that they couldn't be real twins.. Super unfair!

He looked over at Rylee with the biggest saddest blue eyes ever... And slowly he wasn't able to even see her anymore.. All the taller older kids sitting at their own house tables began to fill in and block his view of her. He even got on his knees so he could try and crane to see her, but nope!.. He couldn't see her anymore. So, with a sigh he slumped down and rested his chin on his folded hands on the table... Come on already... Do the talkin' and let's eat so I can find my sister!

Rylee had slipped away from her own table the very first chance she could. That meant as soon as the Headmistress had given her speech and the food had begun to appear the ginger haired lioness and left her own table to be with her brother. From the very second that dusty old sorting hat broke two hearts by separating them she knew she would be going to sit with him.

Slowly trying to mask her own sadness not wanting to make things worse she wandered towards the Hufflepuff table, seeking out the mop of ginger curly hair that matched her own. Not wanting to seem rude or completely un-Rylee-ish she tried to manage a tiny little hint of a smile for those she did happen to know at the table. Spotting Reese she slid down onto the bench him wordlessly and wrapped an arm around his shoulder giving him a tight one armed hug. She didn't need to say anything, her eyes said everything she couldn't, she was heartbroken.

Then he felt her touch and he leaned his copper curl covered head on his sister's shoulder and let his tears slide down his freckled cheeks. " I hate that ruddy old hat.. It ruined EVERYTHING! ", he mumbled as he rubbed the tears away with the back of his hand.

With tears rolling down his cheeks as she rested her head against his he sniffled, " I don't care if she will be.. Now I'm gonna be all by myself..", he said with a sniffle.[B] " How am I even a hufflepuff?!.. I don't even like to be around anyone!.."

He was next to inconsolable. She may be sitting right next to him, but now when it was time to be in his common room, She wouldn't be there to talk to and help him adjust to being so far from home for the first time.
