Charles's classroom looked much as it and the Great Hall always did. Desks and chairs were arranged in their usual fashion and the ceiling was enchanted to resemble the weather outside. Today it was a sky full of Cumulonimbus clouds intruded upon by occasional splotches of blue. As usual, the history of magic professor is preoccupied with some essay he is writing. He occasionally glances up as a student enters. Find a spot to sit and say hello if you wish.
The only thing different than usual about the classroom was the arrangement of a large blue cooler next to the professor's desk. The word ultrices is written on a paper taped to the top of the cooler. What could it possibly mean?

... Well, Professor Curtains' quote from Lemony Snicket made Vivian tilt her head a little bit. She tried analysing the quote, and... she wasn't really sure if she agreed with it. Dark wizards like He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named felt like the kind of person who would read, though. He couldn't have possibly figured out what a horcrux was, like it simply fell into his head. But everyone knew he very much turned out to be wicked.
But because she was a bit sleepy, Vivian didn't have enough brain to voice out her thoughts regarding that topic so she simply listened to them and leaned onto Kye as she did. Instead, she gave more thought on the actual question for their class, about magic. “Well, I know of a comic book series entitled ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’,” the Head Girl shared. “It seems like quite real, though, even if the author was a Muggle. It’s about the main character, Sabrina, dealing with her everyday life as a witch and trying to keep her powers from the ‘normal’ people that they call mortals.” So, basically, it was like some sort of coming-of-age story that teenagers can relate to. Pretty cool, if you asked Vivian.
What seemed to be an argument had caught Vivian’s attention for a moment. The Head Girl eyed the two first years (Reese and Quinn) with an eyebrow perked up. Well, as long as things take a violent turn, then Vivian wasn’t going to butt in. They weren’t members of her house, anyway. Perhaps Hattie and Jessa could handle that stuff, y’know. And then her eyes flew towards Ronan’s direction, who spoke about Flynn being rude.
LOL, that wasn’t a lie, though. Coleslaw just probably wasn’t as rude to Vivian as he was to everyone else. She’d done things for him last term, after all.
As for the forming groups, Vivian stayed behind for now. She’ll most likely pick up those who didn’t have groups yet when the time came. Or she would group with her usuals. She didn’t mind either way.

Cam wasn't sure what to make of the professor ignoring everyone's answers but he also wasn't personally offended. It hadn't been a right or wrong kind of question after all. So in the end he just listened to what Professor Curtains had to say but didn't take any notes. That wouldn't be relevant for the exam, would it? All this was merely a difference of opinion after all. If anything, they'd be asked about their OWN opinion on the matter and he didn't need to take notes for that.
Moving on though, he turned to look at Stasya and gave her a small smile. "Sure, yeah. That sounds good." Whoever it was she was addressing right now. Apparently it included Jessa though which was definitely a good start. He gave her smile too and scooted a little closer to Stasya so they'd all be able to hear and see each other better. Who else was in their group?

Normally when something involved her brother, Rylee would have paid more attention. However this was a debate on fiction version non-fiction writing. She already knew very well where Reese's opinions lie on that matter for she and he had come to their own debates on this numerous times before themselves. So while she my have seem somewhat amused by his antics for the first several moments she had simple zoned out after that and let him and Quinn continue on.
Finally the Professor took charge once more and well she would have liked to say she understood what he was talking about... but yeah, no. Most of what he said went right over her ginger haired head. Rylee blinked her bright blue eyes at the man while she took down some notes trying to make sense of what it was they were meant to be doing. At least she understood they were to be getting into groups?

Rylee turned around in her seat to catch her brothers eye and wave him over only to see hear someone else already telling him he was working with them. Figures. Why wouldn't they be claiming him. Alright then. No worries. She would sit right here. Until someone made her move or a group came to join her cause really who even cared? It's not she even understood this activity anyway

So much...talking going on. This class made his head hurt sometimes. Anyway, now that was done and over with. It was time to form their mini activity group. He looked around for potential .../targets/. He stood up and walked over to Vivian’s desk and sat next to her. “Can I join you?” He asked with a half-smirk “Just following orders by the professor.” She wouldn’t refuse, right?

Ugh. Ari found herself groaning when the professor told them to divide themselves into groups. No, there isn't anything inherently wrong with group projects, and Ari doesn't mind working with people at all (as long as they were reasonable and willing to contribute). She just really despises the part where she has to look for a group. Worse, she has to get up from her chair and walk around.
As expected, much of the class already began to assemble themselves in their friend groups, and all Ari could do was observe the crowd and attempt to identity figures that were separated from the horde. Well, there's nothing much she could do but attempt to form a new band...

Derf wasn't all to sure what to make of Bel's sheepish smile - it was not a smile that she wore typically and he had never known her to be particularly awkward about being corrected over things (especially not something as small as this) - so he simply returned hers with a non-sheepish one of his own. Mufti day though, he had forgotten about that expression. And it was during this time that he was looking at Bel that Zoryn had tossed the piece of paper at him, knocking him right in the back of the head and, since he hadn't seen who had thrown it, he was oblivious to its intent. "Oi," he mumbled as he looked around to see what had been tossed at him, finding the balled up parchment on the ground and collecting it.
Note passing? Had the professor seen that?
...apparently not as the lesson was moving forward with no reprimanding going on, which meant he was safe to smooth it out and see what was....it was blank? Well...this was even more confusing then. Why was paper being thrown at him?!
He was only sort of paying attention to when Professor Curtains was praising himself and Ronan for their knowledge of Latin - which Derf was tempted to argue he had very little off outside of spell entomology and honestly the Head Boy seemed WAY more knowledgable than himself...and even more less than impressed by what the professor was saying. Which, well, Derf reckoned he ought to just go speak with Professor Noble afterwards because, well, something was sorta making the Hufflepuff have a good think about this. He knew that ice cream had been created in like...the 17th century...but Latin was WAY WAY WAAAAAAAAAAAY older than that...so HOW was there even a word for it? It surely was more, you know, a modern translation of sorts...which made him more keen into buying what Ronan was saying than, well, this other word being it. So...Professor Noble it was then. And maybe he could get some intel for Zoryn while he was visiting the Potion's Master's office.
Speaking of Zoryn, he glanced over at her for a second just to grin - as if she were in on his internal conversation.
Though, as for the professor's question about the type of magic in the particular book he had shared...his answer was essentially the same as Chloe's. His book series had been written by a wizard AND former Hogwarts professor. History of Magic, in fact, and he had heard loads about him from mum. Though he would have liked to offer up his addition to the discussion, mostly echoing what his Ravenclaw friend had to say, Derf found himself silenced instead by the quote the professor had elected to share...and he felt his heart drop into his stomach and in the next moment his head was snapping around to look at HIS Gryffindor. Which he chastised himself over in another 30 seconds because he was sorta drawing more attention to his best mate's distress. Distress that he could visibly see on Abey's face and Derf could already see the spiral and doubt forming. Derf knew quite intimately his best mate's struggles and dislike of reading, it was why Derf often read their textbook aloud to him when they did study together, so this was...yeaaaaaah...
But hey, since he had this random bit of parchment thrown at him...
He tried giving Abey a reassuring smile, but Abey was a bit too in his head at the moment to notice him on the other side of the classroom, so soon the Hufflepuff's attention was on the parchment in his hand as he went about doodling something - another Picketta sketch and she was gleefully shredding a book with her long sharp fingers and pointed teeth all with a thought bubble of 'I LOVE BOOKS ♥♥'. Waiting for a moment to see how the discussion was flowing, Derf crumbled up the piece of parchment once again and lobbed it over to Abey. The debate over the quote raged on, and Zoryn's words sorta reached his ears but only just, and Abey simply kept venturing glances at the Gryffindor quidditch captain.
Otherwise, Derf elected to remain quiet during this debate and discussion. Rather he was curious how this fiction discussion was going to work its way into an activity on history. Possibly connections to breaches in the Statute? That was all his mind could come up with in the moment...otherwise he was sorta wondering why Mr. Kennedy wasn't here for a sort of Bookworm meeting. Stasya's voice cut through some of his thoughts, and he was smiling and nodding at her long before he registered just who the 'all of us' was. Not that the Hufflepuff would make a scene out of it or anything, just let his insides squirm around a bit. "Of course," he smiled at his friend and followed Jessa's example to turn his own chair around as well...which also meant that he was glancing at the book now in her lap and scanning the page she was reading. He couldn't help it, he was curious.
...............and he quickly wished he hadn't been curious enough to look.
And yes, Zoryn, he would share notes with you later. Like always.

Reese just narrowed his eyes at Quinn as she tore into him in front of the whole class.. He'd NEVER been so embarrassed and the brick red shade of the tips of his ears spoke volumes.. Before he knew it he was chest-heaving mad..
" Dilate my brain, eh?.. The very definition of Fact is the truth about events as opposed to interpretation... Meaning they're not to be altered.. Unlike, fiction.. The truth bent to suffice the readers imagination.. And ya can find the truth as ya call it in any ole book.. If ya look hard enough for it.. , he retorted before getting to his feet. " I think my sister can help me out with this lesson thanks.. "
And with that said he went over to join Rylee and his friend Ari for the class activity.. " Mind if I join you guys? ", the first year badger asked hopefully. He knew that she shouldn't want to let him join.. Not after he'd treated her lately..
"'The true sign of intelligence is not Knowledge but imagination,'" she said to Reese as he was packing. "Albert Einstein." Oh yes, she knew who that was even if she didn't know all that much about muggles. And she knew Reese would know who that was as well...probably. It made little sense to her how he could deny this. She'd told him she had had leukemia. He knew that fact about her. But he didn't understand it at all, he didn't know it the way she and Beth knew it.
But, she could write him a story, however fictitious, and he'd walk away understanding intimately what that had been like. Oh, but there was no truth in fiction. Tosser.
Quinn scowled at his retreating back and turned to Beth with a shrug. They needed to find a new group now apparently.
She stood and moved closer to Nettie and Daniel. "Mind with we join you?"
He hated group work. Not so much the work as the groups themselves. There was always one person in the group that Ewan wasn’t sure of. Having raised from his seat to go a sit with Rylee and her group, he hesitated and looked around, eyeing up other groups.
Finally, having noticed both Daniel, Nettie, Quinn and Beth together, he walked over to them.
“Do you mind?”. All of his usual humour void from his face.

Skylar had heard Patrick's comment about taking this class, but honestly, two things. It wasn't a question, but a statement. She was here, wasn't she, which meant she obviously was taking it. And two, the lesson was starting. Oh and three, there was a patronus skirting around the desk in the back which had the Slytherin Captain furrowing her own brows in frustrations. WHY YOU HAVE TO SHOW OFF LIKE THAT, RONAN CARTER? Also, what happy memories does the head boy have that allowed him to produce the corporeal patronus?? She had happy memories... she was a good witch ... she was an ace student. Why was she unable to produce more than a few wisps?
It was her frustrations about patronus charms that led to the captain completely unfocused about the start of the lesson and the drama that seemed to unfold. Which was unfortunate because the seventh year had LOTS of opinions when it came to fiction writers, given that she was quite the bibliophile. Also disappointing? Professor Curtains didn't ask them for the meaning of the word on the cooler, but revealed it, which meant she didn't have the opportunity to show off her Latin skills. Because if Ronan Carter can show off, she wanted to as well. Although she also knew ultrices could translate to other things like basketball and while she'd have been okay with either, the cooler was a giveaway that it was ice cream.
Casual Fridays? Okay then. She gave a small salute to the younger Slytherin, wondering if it would also earn Slytherin some extra house points given his rule got chosen. Because priorities here for her final year. Um ........ WHAT??! Okay, so yes she was a reader and maybe it was BECAUSE of that, which meant she was looking at the History professor all perplexed. Wicked people didn't have time for reading? Uh. No. No. No. She was not on board with that at all. And it seemed some of her classmates chimed in to disagree with that as well. Also was she allowed to mention Joanne Rowling to which their grand school was based upon. Wait, was that considered non-fiction since she wrote about a place that they attended?? Skylar scribbled it down in her notes, but didn't say anything, because honestly, she was still irritated about how judgmental Curtains was when it came to evil people not reading. She was quite sure the opposite was true.
More likely to be wicked if you don't read? Yea, no. She didn't buy that quote from Lemony Snicket. Also, what did he know of wicked people by simply being cruel to his or her names? UH ......... Skylar wasn't wicked, but that too didn't make any sense. Because she was quite certain you could be cruel without being wicked. It was all about intentions.
Also, three or four teams? What did that mean exactly? If that was needed, why didn't they just get grouped by house? She glanced around, debating if she should join a team or wait and stick with her usuals. So yea, she was open, if anyone was interested.

Gunnar was pretty much checked out of this conversation, debate, uproar, whatever you wanted to call it. Quite frankly, it was boring, though all the raised voices and talking over each other made him a little anxious. He generally found this class to be on the boring side though, so it wasn't too surprising that he was sat at the edge of the classroom, doodling geometric patterns at the edge of his parchment during the discussion. He read about as much as the average person did, he supposed, but really had nothing to add. And honestly, who cared if some old guy with a weird name thought that people who didn't read could turn out to be evil?
He did look up from his desk when it was announced that they had to break up into groups, and he groaned internally. Maybe he just wasn't in the right mood today. The twelve year old casually glanced around to see most of his peers already grouping up and he wasn't completely sure who to approach to ask if he could join. But he did notice his house's Quidditch captain sitting near him and looking around too. She was quite a bit older, but she was cool so maybe she would be open to working with him.
"Hey, Skylar," Gunnar called over to get her attention. "You want to work together?" Of course if she had friends who wanted to join, that would be okay too. But he didn't think he was allowed to just work by himself.

Why was she beaming? It couldn’t be that she was that excited to be in class but it was Juniper that we are talking about here. Maybe it was some sort of defense mechanism to make her look like she was really and excited for this lesson. Her face went back to a stare once the lesson started.
The stare soon turned into a look of confusion. Ultrices? Ice cream? DOES NOT COMPUTE…. HUH? That wasn’t right? She KNEW her latin or did she? Pshh of course she did. She got beat to the punch of mentioning this wrong, but heck she wasn’t going to lose house points arguing with professor.
It was nothing against getting things from people at Hogwarts, you had to watch who you take things from around these parts, and sadly professors fell into that category.
Sometimes… so it was highly unlikely that she would be getting ice cream today.
Anyway that was all about the ice cream anyway.
Mmmm…. Casual Fridays. YEP she was down with that.
And as for the other answer well this was going to be a hard one to answer. She had many MANY favorite authors but at least narrowing it down to a fiction writers ”Thunder Wand. He’s got a pretty cool series.” He was from the magical world too. So that was pretty cool too.
Juni just sat there though the next question. As some of the other had filled in the answers that she would given. So there was no point in repeating anything. She wasn’t sure what wasa going on now. She must’ve zoned out for a while… or at least a few minutes. Why were they grouping up? Who was she going to group up with? She scanned the with her eyes and ears. Who needed a group or needed more in their group. Mmmm Skylar and Gunnar… that was little Chloe’s big brother. ”Hey you guys mind if I join?” Maybe they could join a bigger group if they needed to or just start their own.

The little ones had started a bit of a spat, and Kye didn't need to be part of that. She sat back in her seat and watched them go back and forth. Kye wondered what other kind of quotes Mr. Snicket used. Mental note for later to maybe stop by the media center and look him up. Did he say these things just to be controversial or what? Ah, groups. Hmm... Kye glanced around, remembering how much she disliked forming groups. She would have agreed with Skylar about splitting by House. As it was, she motioned to Vivi as Gunnar spoke to Sky. "Ooh, any more room over there?" she asked, ready to make her way over to where they were sitting. She didn't want to deal with that awkward moment of being the last person without a group, right?

He was slowly but surely starting to zooooone completely out. Professor Curtains was talking a lot and unfortunately most of it was going in one and ear and straight out of the other. Elbow on the table, Max rested his chin in his hand and got lost in the charmed sky for a little while.
That was until he heard the Professor mention something about groupwork and the other kids started chatting and moving around to hurry and find a partner. His heart normally sank at the mention of groupwork. Firstly, there was the ordeal of having to actually ask someone to be your class partner. And secondly, it meant having to have discussions in front of people he wasn't entirely comfortable with...
But this time...
"We gonna partner up, yeah?" He asked cheerfully, turning to face Bel with a grin.

Bel was startled out of her daydreaming by Max's voice, which wasn't a bad way to be startled, in her opinion. She had been just letting all the blather wash over her, though she was trying to stay present in the lesson, the topic definitely wasn't her strong point. She noticed people staring to move and perked up noticeably when she realised why.
"Yeah deffo!" Bel said with a grin of her own for Max. Suddenly the lesson was a lot more interesting. How big were the groups supposed to be? She wouldn't mind if it was just the pair of them, Max was smart and creative so whatever they were supposed to be doing she was sure they would do alright, but there was space if anyone chose to come this way, she supposed.

Abra was perfectly happy (okay, not at all, really) to sit there and sulk and just generally be a teenager about the whole quote situation, but he (naturally) couldn't help but notice when a crumpled up ball of parchment suddenly bounced off of his head. Abra blinked in surprise, but having quick Quidditch reflexes meant his head was up and his hand had shot out to snatch it out of the air before it could get too far away. He glanced around the room, then curiously over at Derf - aka, the sender - before uncrumpling the parchment and looking at the contents. It took a moment to process, but Abra was soon looking back up again and grinning across the room at Derf, feeling all kinds of warm and appreciative that his Hufflepuff had known when and how to cheer him up.
He smoothed out the parchment and tucked it inside his textbook, and was just thinking about drawing something on a new sheet to lob back at him, when he picked up on a particular tirade response to Curtains, one spoken by a very familiar voice. Abra looked up and in Zoryn's direction, and had to smile a little at her. It felt natural to do so, even despite all the Quidditch... stuff between them. They were, after all, still friends, and had a lot in common where 'lack of reading' was concerned.
As all the other answers and rebuttals poured in, Abra glanced at the professor and then down at his textbook, which he pretended to inspect with great interest. He was still doing this when the first years nearby began their... whatever that was... and still more when Curtains moved the lesson on. He didn't even look up again until it was mentioned that they needed to get into groups.
... Groups.
If there was anything worse than reading, it was probably forced group work. Feeling very much like a deer caught in the wandlight, Abra looked desperately around for a friendly group he could attach himself to nearby. Derf's group would have been the natural place he'd be drawn to, but they were on the other side of the room and already that group was growing fast. Others were forming too, so already the 'three or four' limit had been reached... but where should he go? Surely nobody would want him in their team, not when he could offer approximately literally nothing in terms of useful input.
... Okay, forget it. Abra decided not to care that his ideal group was on the opposite side of the room, nor that they looked fit to bursting already. He grabbed his back and textbook and crossed over to where Derf was sat with Jessa and that whole group. "Um..." Uhhhhhhhh... hi. "Do you guys mind if I join you? I know it's a big group already but..."
BUT honestly? He wanted to be near Derf during this turbulent time of 'group work'. As well as any turbulent time ever. As well as any non-turbulent time ever. Was that such a crime?

Beth was almost shocked when Reese left to work with Rylee…but really, she wasn’t. Rylee was his sister, and Rylee hadn’t just called him tardigrade…really, that wasn’t nice was it? Beth, of course looked over to Reese and gave him an apologetic smile even before walked over to where Daniel and Nettie where. ”hey, hi…do you mind working together?” she asked again looking directly at Nettie, ”I didn’t mean for that to sound mean earlier, history…sometimes makes me a little…testy same with maths” she explained – seeee olive branch.
She was doing her best to impersonate the little angelic Hufflepuff she knew so well, not Reese. He was far from angelic, no, she was trying to impersonate one Octavia Loftbottom. She did, of course, spot the approaching Ewan and give him a small nod - she wouldn't mind...his muggle prospective could be fun! "anyone else want to join?" she asked and looked around at everyone.

I'm Trinetta, but call me Nettie," she told him with a grin. Then, Quinn had wandered over, along with the girl she'd gotten into a little...disagreement with earlier.
Nettie smiled as the Sassy Slytherin girl walked over to her, deciding that it had been long enough to bury the hatchet (like, ten minutes, that was long enough) and nodded. "It's ok. Shockingly, we weren't the most dramatic part of this lesson," she told her with a grin. "But yes, let's all work together!" she said with a nod of agreement.
Alright, so they had a group together! Now they just needed something to do...

Septimus remembered that lesson about rules and getting them changed. He had been wondering if his or anyone else’s would actually be considered and as the professor continued speaking, it seemed like one had. Cool…no uniforms on Fridays! One less day to be more comfortable and ready to have fun even if in lessons. And favorite fiction authors? That was hard to pick one or even a couple. As other students answered the question. He couldn’t help but nod in agreement to at least a few but didn’t add any on his own. Instead he jotted down those that he didn’t know of.
And yes he had read fiction books pertaining magic but they were already moving on.
Getting into the activity Septimus had caught. What he seemed to have missed was the idea of forming groups to work with it on. Getting lost on the topic of books and reading could often be problematic. The Ravenclaw boy looked around to see if there was someone, or rather multiple someones to group up with to form one of the mentioned teams. Anyone want a second year.

It was the most flattering and pleasing thing in the world to be asked to join a group. Not to have to ask around, to hope someone liked you and didn't prefer someone else, but to be ASKED. Chloe grinned broadly at Stasya, nodding and trying not to blush from sheer pleasure. Be cool, Kettleburn. Be cool.
Jessa and Cam and Derfy got that flash of a brilliant grin too, because they were all included in the breadth of her pleasure. They were the best group, okay? The very best... and only made better when Abey appeared and asked to join. See? They'd needed him and hadn't even known it yet.
"ABEY. You have to be in our group or else it won't even really be a group. It'll be... it'll be... a sad collection of people who haven't properly coalesced into group status. So you must join us." In fact, she scooted over so he could push his chair in beside her.

Maddie didn't know if she agreed with the Snicket guy. She also didn't know if she disagreed with him. Would it be detrimental to her grade in this class if she didn't form an opinion one way or the other? Maddie just didn't care what Mr. Snicket had to say. She didn't even know him, nor had she read any of his books. It seemed a lot of people got worked up over that quote of his, though. It had kind of worked in her favor in that she got to sit and just watch for a while.

Then they were dividing up into teams, and Maddie found herself glancing around for someone who needed other people to work with. Nettie seemed to already have a group, and Maddie didn't really see many other people she knew right now. But then there was a guy she'd met a while back, and he needed a partner. Maddie approached him with a smile. "Hey!" she said. "I need a team member!" Maybe they could stick together and find others who also needed members.
"Nice to meet you, Nettie. I'm Daniel," he smiled at the Ravenclaw, before another showed up, who turned out to be none other than Beth's friend, Quinn. And speaking of Beth, she'd already asked if he and Nettie would join them, to whom he could only nod happily. Huh, maybe group work wouldn't be that bad when you actually knew the people working with.
And then Ewan dropped by, and he grinned. "The more, the merrier," he said as a way of inviting the younger boy to join them, as well. The girls seemed to have made up, so it looked like they had a group now. Perfect.

It didn't take too long for someone to say her name and Skylar looked over to see where the voice had come from. Ah yes. She recognized him from last year. One of her ickle snakes - or sort of more Vivian's since he hadn't tried out for quidditch yet. "Hey Gunnar, sure, i dont mind--" just as she was about to move over towards him, there was a Juniper asking to join them.
And then a Kye. Well Curtains hadn't actually said how many in the group, only that there should be three or four groups, which meant they would probably be large groups. "Yes definitely! Plenty of room for both of you, Juni. Kye." She beamed at the two of them. Hmm, maybe Vivi and Nathan wanted to join too? So they wouldn't just have a group of two?

phew Nettie had accepted the olive branch, she of course had heard her introducing herself to pancakes…Daniel and couldn’t help but feel her lip twitch as she tried to stifle a laugh. ”It’s probably a good thing yeah? Quinn and Reese were…entertaining to say the least” she smiled over to her. ”oh…I’m Beth by the way I know we haven’t been properly introduced and everything,” she smiled and then glanced over to Daniel, the same grin on her face.
It was nice really, having the entire group together even if groups…were, well, sometimes nerve wracking. ”we’re probably lucky – Quinn here, is an avid reader she…clearly, didn’t list half of her favorites so we’ll have loads of books to pull ideas from” Beth grinned and then smiled at their group.
This was going to be fun.

Teams were forming around her faster than she could keep up. She had no idea who was still in need of a teammate and who was already taken. The introvert side of her screamed to be taken away from the madness as she sat quietly at her desk.
What she wanted at that moment, more than anything else, was to be outside. Away from the chaos around her and away from picking one friend over another. Also, there was no way she was going to approach a group of older students and beg to work with them. Even less chance of her teaming up with the big group of rowdy first years. It was all giving her a stomachache.
