Default Flying Lesson 1: How to train like an athlete

Banner credit: Suziella

On November 27th, snowflakes were falling down to add to the thin layer of snow already covering the pitch and the rest of the school grounds. Haraldur prepared the afternoon lesson by neatly stacking a pile of black notebooks on the small table he’d set up on the pitch. The snow crunched below his heavy boots so he swung one leg to mount his broom instead, hovering slightly above the ground. It wasn’t that cold out, plus the kids would soon forget about it, he was sure.

For now though, they still had a few minutes to arrive before he started the lesson. The flying instructor leaned back on his broom and glanced up at the castle to catch a glimpse of the first arriving students.

And once again his hand went up as more queries were posed to the class. " Sir.. It's important to set goals .. Both short term and long term... Short term to meet long term goals.. Gives ya something to work for... But it doesn't rightly matter whether your making those goals for fitness or career.. When ya meet short term goals it makes ya feel like that long term goal is more attainable.. and that makes ya wanna work harder.. Ya know?.. One motivates the other.. ", he said all proud of himself..

Seriously?!.. How was he not sorted into Ravenclaw?.. Or Slytherin? Long-winded tedious little thing that he was..

"That's very true, Mr Prichard." Haraldur said, hovering towards the boy. "Goals if of course not only important in sports but in other aspects as well." Like... Academics. Hint, hint.

She knew that exercise was important, but she hated being reminded of that. Organizing her energy into a routine wasn't something she was fond of, but she had a feeling she was about to have to do that very thing. Maddie listened to the professor's question and thought about the answer for about a split second before raising her hand.

"I think it's so they'll know where they came from and where they want to go," she said. "For example, maybe they can run one mile, and then one day, they can run three. So their goal is to run two extra miles." That sounded like a LOT of running to Maddie, but that's what a goal was.

Haraldur hovered past the first year to the young Hufflepuff. "Very good, Miss Kemp." He began. "Being able to track and follow your progress is important. You might not notice how far you've come otherwise." Figuratively speaking.

He didn't say that aloud though, some things weren't needed to be told.

When it was his turn to answer, "Small goals help to keep you encouraged and on track. Small ones such as promising to walk around the courtyard more is easier and good enough to do than promising to lug a couple trunks around daily." Those were his thoughts on the matter.

Haraldur hovered away from the two Hufflepuffs and towards his Ravenclaw Captain. "That's true. Small and short-term goals are just as important as your major long-term ones. Actually, keeping small goals could be even more important than the final destination." Haraldur knew that as a Quidditch Captain, Kirk was well aware of this fact. Small goals for every practice and every game eventually brought the team closer to the ultimate goal which was of course winning the Quidditch Cup.

Like my mom will give a goal of cleaning your room and after you are done with that you get rewarded with a treat. So if you do that for exercise your reward could be you play better or maybe you have ice cream after a run to reward your self. "

That sounded okay, didn't it?

Haraldur left Kirk's side and hovered over to his enthusiastic fan teammate. "Very good, Miss McCarthy." He smiled. "If the goal is not its own reward, treating yourself to something nice after an accomplished goal is very wise."

Her eyes drifted to the pile of black notebooks on the table and she instantly regretted answering the question. He was probably going to have them make short and long term goals then track them in those books. She hoped she was wrong.

Haraldur frowned slightly, leaving Chloe and hovering over to another skilled Quidditch player. "I see where you're coming from, Miss Walsh." He began, paused for a moment to think before continuing. "The goals you set for yourself should always be attainable and realistic. Setting long-term goals does require some training but combined with attainable short-term goals; anything is possible." He gave the girl a genuine smile then. "Exercise or sport should of course always be fun, so you're attitude towards that is good."

"I think, goal setting is also important to know when you've failed too. Because sometimes we don't reach our goals and achieve our dreams and succeed, but that's okay too because we can succeed in other ways even if its in recognizing failure." it was something that she was slowly learning to figure out - accepting failure and not seeing it as a bad thing but as an opportunity.

Haraldur hovered over to his Slytherin Captain, listening to her words as he did so. "Absolutely, Miss Diggory." He said, once she'd finished. "Realizing and accepting failure is an important lesson for all athletes. Failure of reaching a goal doesn't mean you've failed as you've learned lessons on the way. Setting up short-term goals could help you minimize the risk of not reaching your long-term goal though." Maybe she was speaking of personal experience. Quidditch could be tough on the students, especially the Captains who worked hard all through the year. He gave her a small nod before moving towards Jessa.

As for goals...

“I don’t know about most people but I usually set goals to challenge myself. Once I’ve gained interest, I decide how much I want to accomplish then see if I really can. It’s like a working marker or checkboard for me to tick off and assess the extent of my capabilities. Every time I hit a stumbling block that prevents me from getting to the next goal, it’s like a small challenge on how to figure a way around it.” Which she obviously enjoyed doing.

Jessa could spend hours dissecting an issue, turning it this way and that, flipping it inside out, in fact, that was when she had some of her most content moments. There was just something about getting the wheels in your brain turning and considering something from all angles.

It wasn’t a sentiment most could appreciate but there it was. She didn’t like going outside and excerising her body, she liked being inside and exercising her mind.

Haraldur nodded as he hovered towards Jessa. "Working towards and eventually achieving your goals is indeed challenging yourself. Whether it's in a physical context or not. Tracking your progress and setting up short-term goals will help you figure out what went right and what went wrong along the way."

As professor Haraldur brushed the snow off the books, Daehyun still had some hope left that it'd be a theoretical lesson- but then he kept on asking about exercising and goals. Well, he wouldn't know why people set goals for exercising, but he supposed they had the same purpose in any field, so his hand went up. "Maybe to challenge ourselves and know our limits?"

Haraldur left the Ravenclaw Prefect and gave the young Gryffindor an encouraging smile. There ya go, buddy! "Exactly, Mr. Yoon." He said, happy the boy had ventured to answer his question. "Not only do we challenge ourselves but we can also achieve more than what we originally thought. Crush those limits." Like the boy who had been convinced he could never fly but was still here in his second year.

She really wanted to go to the computer room now. How much longer was this flying lesson gonna be? Sylvie Norcott had places to be and raid bosses to kill.

Safe to say, the flying instructor had NO idea what Sylvie was talking about. But he wouldn't admit it. He was down with the kids. Cool and hip and knew all the street lingo. "Yes..." He said, hovering away from Daehyun towards Sylvie. "Goals do keep you motivated and... Help you with the gold and the farming." Yes? Ahem.

And besides… It’s more rewarding for yourself to finish what you’ve started, knowing that you worked hard on something” she said thinking about herself when she had been in her first year…

Now this was more in Haraldur's expertise. The instructor left Sylvie and hovered towards Leesha. "That's very important indeed, Miss Griffel." He said. "Finishing a project in the time allotted for it is very rewarding. Setting goals for the journey there is useful for that."

FRESH AIR! SNOW! FANTASTIC DAY FOR FLYING!

Derf had bolted down to the pitch and, unlike in his youth (har har) he had taken a bit of a more mature stance on the pitch. No mounting the broom and no trying to prove himself to anyone else - though first year him was still quite proud of the little bit of showing off he had done on the school broom back then. Of course he noticed the black notebooks and the Hufflepuff was honestly hoping that those were for them to draw up flight patterns and strategy for quidditch and nothing to terribly academic. It was one thing he enjoyed about Flying, it was a class that allowed him to shut off his brain and rely solely on muscle memory and reflex to navigate through. No facts, no figures, just pure enjoyment.

Please don't say you were going to ruin all that, Mr. Groundskeeper!

Though the promise of a long term assignment was NOT promising foreshadowing.

Bleh.

But the most important aspect of his workout? DOING it. Like, you know, loads of times you tell yourself you're going to do something but then you don't ACTUALLY execute it. So the actual physical act of DOING was the most important bit. To him at least. As for the why he did it...he just sorta did it. He enjoyed physical activity and the only real purposeful exercising he had done as of late was weight training to bulk up for his beater position - hence the arm muscles and broader shoulders and all that.

But, mostly, Derf was just listening while lightly drumming on his broom's handle and shifting his balance between his feet.

Could they get in the air yet?

SO MUCH TALKING.

Could they please just get in the air already? That was his short term goal, yeah?

Derf did not really have much to add to what others were saying either. Though his own goals and ambitions tended to be quite fantastical - like learning Parsletongue - and often times out of reach. But that was how he pushed himself best. You know how the expression went: shoot for the moon and you'll end up in the stars...or something like that. Small term goals were, you know, made things more manageable and less daunting...but easily achieved things didn't motivate and drive Derf.

Still shifting the balance between the balls of both his feet...the fifth year just wanted to get up in the aaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiir. Please?

Haraldur hoverd from Leesha towards Zoryn, passing (as always) a very eager, very impatient Hufflepuff Prefect. The flying instructor gave the boy a smile as he hovered past him. He noticed the weight shifting and he noticed the finger drumming. Sooon, boy. Soon.

"Beating your goal is exhilarating. Makes the whole thing worth it." Everything in life was a competition. Even whenever you were competing with yourself.

Couldn't they start flying now? Zor liked that part because she was better at it than Sylvie was.

Haraldur nodded as Zoryn spoke up. "Reaching and beating your goal is a great feeling, you're right Miss. Spinnet. And it keeps you focused and motivated through the whole process." A concept she as a former Quidditch Captain would be very familiar with.

Funny, the flying instructor was really not the first person Abra had heard say about how important exercise was, how it benefited physical and mental health. His healer also went on about it a fair amount, but Abra really had all those bases covered. The stairs in school, Quidditch, swimming, maybe he wasn't as active as some, but he definitely felt more than active enough just based on things he did for necessity and for fun. It did make him wonder how different things might be if he did, say, go for a run every morning, but... well, he wasn't going to do that. Sleeping took precedence.

At the next question, Abra waited a while before raising his hand again, because it was one of those questions where he was sort of worried about giving a stupid answer. In fact, most questions that started with 'Why do you think...?' made him feel that way.

"I think maybe it helps you measure your progress. Also, sometimes it feels easier to do a thing when you're working towards a goal as opposed to when you're just doing something without an aim." Abra bit his lip uncertainly, then tried for an example. "Like... with swimming. I like swimming laps and seeing if I can do a certain amount of laps in a certain length of time. Sometimes even just counting them keeps me, um... engaged or whatever? But if I'm just swimming backwards and forwards for no reason, with nothing to work at, that can feel mega boring, actually. I end up feeling a bit lost."

Haraldur left Zoryn's side and hovered over to his Gryffindor Captain. "Interesting, Mr. Botros." He said, nodding. "Focus is actually a major part of why athletes set goals for their workout. Both for every time they do a physical activity as well as what those goals should eventually lead to. Like the Quidditch Cup for example." Wink, wink.

Hmm... short term and long term goals. It is important to have either one. You don't have to be an athlete necessarily. Caleb waits for his turn to answer "goals are always important whether they are short term or long term. Especially to athletes, it becomes their spark of motivation. A drive to keep their eyes on the price" or a trophy or a magazine cover.

Haraldur hovered over to the Slytherin. "You're very right, Mr. Dawkins." He nodded. "Athletes find short- and long-term goals very crucial to their success. But the habit of setting up goals for yourself can be applied in many aspects of your life."

Staying active helped with her long term goals, like making starter in Quidditch this term. The more active she was, the longer she was able to train and the more difficult the training became. Each short term goal was a building block to something bigger and better just down the line.

Rylee raised her hand when she was ready to give an answer. "For me, I think that short term goals really help in me wanting to do more than I already am. Pushing myself a little bit harder each time to do something I wasn't able to do the day before, maybe it's run a little faster or a little bit longer. Take out three targets in a row during practice instead of two. It lets me see my progress a little bit more easily." Long term goals were good too and she had several of those as well but they went unmentioned for the moment.

Haraldur hovered over from Caleb to Rylee while he listened to her answer. "Having set goals for yourself already in your second year at Hogwarts is admirable." He said, knowing quite well of her goals from last term to make the Quidditch team. Which she had. "As long as the goals are realistic and attainable, it's a concept that's very useful."

And raised a critical eye at the man. Was this really a question? Shouldn't it be quite obvious why setting goals for yourself, in anything, not just exercise, was important? It gave you something to work toward and a time table in which to do so, keeping you on track.

While Quinn generally held a low opinion of how intelligent most humans actually were, even this question seemed a bit too obvious and common sense to require being asked.

Haraldur just gave the girl a smile as she thanked him for his warming charm. The instructor glanced at the group and understood that everyone who wanted to answer his question already had. It was time to move on.

”You’re right, everyone. Setting goals is important, specific and realistic goals.” Haraldur began as he hovered back up in front of the group. ”Actually, goals are so important, you should have one every time you do any form of exercise.” Yes, even every time they turned up for flying class or Quidditch practice. ”Having a goal makes you more focused, motivated and hard working. Which makes mental preparation almost as important as the physical preparation.”

Haraldur hovered back and forth in front of the group, causing snow beneath his broom to swirl around before settling again behind him. ”Professional athletes take the mental training seriously and as our Slytherin Captain already mentioned,” He looked over his shoulder at Skylar here, ”Warming up and stretching is just as important to decrease the risk of injuries.”

He stopped in front of the group and leaned back comfortably on his broom. ”The warm up is usually divided into three parts; general portion, stretching and the specific portion. Where the general portion is to increase body and muscle temperature, heart rate and blood flow with some easy exercises. This is followed by stretching and the specific portion, designed depending on which kind of activity you’re warming up for.” He looked at the group before clapping his gloved hands together once. ”Now, let’s get moving, everyone.” Everyone meant all of them. HE was excused because of old age and a bad knee. But everyone else would start with some warm up.

”I want you all to start with a general warm up which includes 2 laps around the pitch, either on your broom or not.” For some, this was a no-brainer but he knew there were some students who preferred to have their feet on the ground and would rather jog the 2 laps. Which was fine. For now. ”I then want those of you on the ground to jog 1 lap while trying to kick your legs back to kick your own…” Behind. Boot-ay. Derriere. ”Butt.” Yeah, he said it. ”For those of you on your broom, I want you to zig-zag in sharp turns for 1 lap.” He let this sink in for a moment before continuing. ”Once you’re done, I want you all to gather here for some stretches.” Yes? Yes.

The flying instructor brought the horn hanging around his neck up to his lips and a booming sound was heard. Time to mount your brooms!

ooc: Aight, time for a lil’ mini-activity. This will be divided into 2 parts.

Mini-activity 1st part:
- Fly 2 laps around the pitch and 1 lap zig-zagging sharply. Return for a group gathering.
OR;
- Jog 2 laps around the pitch and 1 lap of butt-kick jogging. Return for a group gathering.

All in all you have until Tuesday the 5th of June for the mini-activity, but I’ll post the 2nd part of the activity tomorrow 4th of June at approx 8 pm CET.

Catching up is always allowed.

Let’s get movinnnn’ <3

Anna was momentarily torn between running or flying because she loved BOTH. This was, however, FLYING class, so that was an easy choice to make. FLYING IT WAS!

She raised her hand above her broom and said "Up!", making her Thunderbolt 6000 shoot upwards and into her hand.

Mounting it, the Gryffindor wasted no time and kicked off straight away to start her first lap around the pitch. "WAHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" She exclaimed, bringing her body close to the broom and zzzzooooOOOOOOOming her way around.

WoooOOOOOooooOOOOooofjlfsjdjfklfnldkj best lesson EVER.

It didn't take her too long to complete her first lap and, honestly, she was really looking forward to the second one because ZIG ZAGGING was a thing and it was super fun.

Anna couldn't BELIEVE she was actually in a class at the moment. Flying around doing zigzags and winning house points for it!? AMAZING!

ZIG!

ZAG!

Finally, the lesson has begun! She was sure that if the teacher had stayed talking a little while longer that she would have frozen and she wasn’t kidding about that, she was really cold! With her arms wrapped around her own body and her broom hooked under her arm she walked toward a nice place to start with her exercise. It was of course not even a question about what she would do, fly or not because she LOVED it to fly!

Slightly shaking because of the cold she wished that the winter would end soon, she absolutely preferred the summer, especially now that she was standing outside… “UP” she spoke with a firm voice while holding her hand above her broom and like always, her broom jumped up toward her hand and hovered stable in the air. A smile formed on her face and she easily sat on her broom, pulling it slightly up so that she would fly upwards, higher into the sky until she was satisfied.

Laughing softly she flew her first lap without any trouble and that while looking down at the poor kids who were not brave enough to fly yet. Shaking her head slightly she wondered why anyone wouldn’t like it to fly, it was just so easy and fun to do! Now, time for her second lap… Making herself smaller to fly faster she started to zigzag, now laughing out loud because, it was just too fun to sit still! Whohoo, flying was so cool!

A little part of her wanted to argue with him about setting long term attainable goals. What if you think it is attainable when you set the goal, but then later on find out it isn’t? You fail. That’s what happens. She would give him the attainable short term goals, since those were more likely to happen.

On to the class. She quickly shifted her mind back to what they were doing when she heard the word fly. Of course she would be choosing the fly around the pitch option. Why anyone would wish to jog around when they could fly was beyond her.

She mounted her broom and took off around the pitch. Both her broom and her body were in top racing condition. “Wheeeeeee! She squealed as she rounded the first turn, leaning every so slightly and letting the broom follow her wishes. The cold air and snowflakes were stinging her cheeks, but her eyes were protected by her goggles.

Her body instinctively leaned forward, urging her broom to go faster as she flew down the length of the pitch. It was the most peaceful she had felt in some time. She made quick work of the first two laps, almost wishing she had gone slower so she could stay flying longer...almost.

Then it was zig zag time. She made certain that she wasn’t going to crash into another flyer as she zaged and zigged sharply around the pitch. Each movement a bit sharper than the one before. Her hips were in tune with her broom, sending it a just the right angle to almost slide into the movements. Zig followed by zag and once again zig, all around the pitch.

She was, sadly, back at the starting point once again and reluctantly dismounted to wait for the stretching to begin. While she waited for the others to finish, she watched the skill of the other flyers, keeping an eye on the other houses quidditch players. Knowing more about their flying skills and technique could come in handy during the next game.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy was definitely going to use her broom for her warm-up. She mounted her Firebolt X-Treme and pushed off from the ground. She powered her broom through the air, enjoying the feeling of the crisp, cool air on her face. Daisy loved flying because it made her feel free. She completed her two standard laps before taking a pause that lasted a few seconds. It was then time for the zig-zag lap which Daisy was looking forward to. She carefully zig-zagged through the air, making sure that she had good balance on her broom and that she didn't collide with anyone.

Once her lap was completed, Daisy landed back on the ground, breathing a bit heavily.

Warm ups? Oh, Merlin, why did they even need that... Well, sure, professor Haraldur just pointed out some very good reasons, but Daehyun would still avoid it if he had the chance. He'd rather shorten his suffering as much as possible.

Now, pondering his options, he'd opted for the most unlikely one.

He was going to fly.

... mostly because he ran like a one-legged goose, so he'd rather take his chances on a broom, since it was a flying class, after all. Professor Haraldur didn't specify the height, so he'd fly close to the ground and pray to the higher beings to finish the class in one piece. Commanding the broom with a soft "Up!" he mounted it and took a deep breath before pushing his feet off the ground.

A couple of meters high in the air. Okay, maybe he rose only a little over one meter, but baby steps, yeah? He flew one lap relatively easy, at a slow and careful speed, and when it came to the second... he didn't exactly know how to zig-zag without zig-zagging himself into a stand or someone else, so he ended up flying in a sort of odd, wavy pattern. He liked to stay safe.

Breathing out in relief as he lowered himself back to the ground, he returned for the stretches. He remembered Ewan showing him how to stretch when the Ravenclaw had attempted to teach him how to play muggle football, and it had not been a pleasurable experience.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

He had run enough getting to this class in time so the Ravenclaw went with the flying option. And he suspected that most people would. They were in a flying class after all. What fun was running in a flying class?

Dorian walked over to a school broom and although at home he would simply pick up his father's broom from the ground by hand, he knew that in school he had to show proper technique which meant that he stood on the left side of the broom, held his right hand over it and said in a firm voice "UP!" and the broom shot up in to his hand at the first try.

This was what he liked about flying. He could do things at the first try which was very satisfying concidering he always had to try spells multiple times before they even worked. As he mounted the broom, the third year looked around him to see if it was clear to lift off and when it was he pushed his feet off of the ground.

He hovered for a moment, getting used to the older generation broom because it was certainly not one of the good types his father had and then flew up higher. Leaning to the right, Dorian flew towards the Hufflepuff stands and decided to start his rounds there.

Leaning forward now, the broom sped up. Too bad he couldn't show off some loops that his father had taught him. Perks of having a father who used to be a Quidditch champion for Slytherin House. But then again, showing off wasn't really his thing. As he round the first corner , he leaned his body slight to the left and flew around the goal posts on the opposite side of the field. Once he returned he went straight for the second task.

The zig zag technique was a lot more difficult than he had expected. When he had reached the corner of the other end his body had ended up leaning towards the right which was going in to the stands but luckily after quickly leaning backwards, the teenager could brake before he hit anything. He then leaned to the left and continued his zig zag way further around the field. When he returned, Dorian put pressure on the handle to dive down and braked slowly so that he could step off.

Flying class was literally a Quidditch class to Kye. Everything the professor said, she was relating back to Quidditch. Goals, huh? Her immediate thought was ‘Short Term: Win the next match. Long Term: Keep the Cup!’ but she decided against yelling this out. ”By setting a short term goal, you’re keeping yourself accountable to achieving your long term goal… It’s usually easier to be working toward something as well, instead of just going in with no idea what you’re trying to do. Taking little steps until you find yourself striding.”

Kye listened to the instructions and was not quite feeling the whole jogging thing. Not for three laps anyway. If she could mix and match, she might have, but meh! She picked up her broom, mounted it, kicked off, and zoooooooooomed around the pitch. 0-60 in .5 seconds! ...Okay maybe not, but it sure felt like it. The first two laps went by really quick. So quick, that she had almost started a third lap, before she realized that now was the time for zig zags. She slowed down, just a hair, and began. Nyyooom. Nyyyooom. Nyoom! Kye had started with some airtight zigs, but it was taking FOREVER to get around the field! She opened it up just a little until she felt better about her progress in the lap. When she had gotten back around, she slowed down to hear the next set of instructions.

Yeaaahhhh....as much as she didn't wanna have to fly laps around the pitch, she was all the more confident that this brisk, cold air would make a physical jog near impossible with the lungs she had. The Ravenclaw could almost feel the asthma attack coming on just thinking about it and didn't fancy having to deal with something like that. Did she even have her inhaler? Typically, the 16 year old made an effort to have it with her at all times, but she'd been in a hurry this morning so there was no real way of knowing.

Not willing to take the risk, Jessa bent over and picked up her broom then mounted it. Rather than zoom off like some had, the young girl took to the laps at a slower pace. She wouldn't be winning any races or trophies any time soon but she would be able to breath and that was kinda more important than suddenly having a ton of cold air gushing down her nostrils and throat.

If she was timing herself, she may have been amused at just how slowly she was going but she didn't and could only speculate.

Others were already getting back to the ground and Jessa was still on her first lap--well, actually, second as of this turn right here.

There. Now she was on the second lap.

Much like the first, it went by slowly and uneventfully. She wasn't trying to get there within a specific time frame but was sure to not go atrociously slow because then the Professor may take issue and she might've needed to adjust accordingly or sit it out entirely.

Aaaaand there was the second lap. By the time Jessa got to the zig zags, you could hardly tell they were sharp because of, again, the slow speed at which she decided to attempt them. Nobody mind her, carry on with your business. She would get done eventually.

He was listening...or trying to rather...but really all the fifth year could properly focus on was his need to feel the wind in his fair and ruffling his hair in the way his fingers often did. So when the groundskeeper began talking about what he wanted them to do for a warm up, Derf wasted no time in mounting his broom before the instructions had even concluded and then he just waited for the...

...HORN!

Jogging? Nah, too pedestrian!

Leaning forward on his broom, Derf took off on his first lap around the pitch - the warm up lap, as it were. He kept his speed at a sort of a jogging, or the equivalent at least, for the first half before picking up speed as he made the bend around the hoops. Then it was nothing but pure bliss as she ZOOMED at top speed, though hardly the speed to rival a seeker's, back along the edge until he had finally returned to the starting point.

So...it was zig zagging now, yeah? Pulling up on the handle, Derf looked around to see if he could spot Aaron in the mix so they could take advantage of this time for some extra co-beater in-flight bonding, but he couldn't make him out amongst the sea of robes and shooting brooms. Oh well, it had been a nice thought.

Leaning forward once more, Derf began zig zagging his way around the pitch for his second lap. "Hiya Jessa!" he chirped as he darted by her.

Sylvie snorted. Baldvinsson thought she meant real farming, didn't he? Wizard people. Psht. Five years in this school, the Gryffindor had learned to identify when people knew what she was talking about and they had no idea. it was an easy skill to have really, since most of the time they just looked confused. Baldvinsson, sir, you looked mighty confused. Sir.

Sylvie was very tempted to choose running as opposed to flying. She was, after all, better on her feet than all of these Quidditch people put together But she had [i]honour[i], see, yes she did, and this honour would not let her stay on the ground while Zoryn, Derf, Abra and all of the rest of her class were flying around and doing aerial tricks and generally being impressive. By Thrall she would fly around like the rest of them and be as equally (just a little bit less) impressive (not impressive at all though, maybe adequate, a nice acceptable for Sylvie Norcott if we're honest).

Mounting her broom, she kicked off the ground with her customary wobble, almost a ritual by now after kicking off like this since her first year, and started her (slow-ish) laps around the pitch. She was not competing or chasing or in any way comparing herself with anyone else, okay, Ms. Roommate-Likely-Trying-To-Show-Off? Just so we're clear.

Zoryn was starting to get a little antsy. She wanted to leave to be 100% honest, but she couldn’t. Only because she didn’t want to disappoint Prof B and NOT because she had to make sure she outlasted a very specific person. Nope. She was not comparing herself to anyone here. Especially not someone she wasn’t on the best terms with. Actually, she hadn’t noticed that that person was even in this lesson. (((Was she looking this way?)))

Anyways. Not caring. That’s what Zoryn was doing at the moment.

And paying attention to instructions (surprise, surprise), there is a first time for everything! Warm ups were dumb, but necessary. School brooms were dumb, but unnecessary. Yet Zoryn had to use one because her actual (WONDERFUL, AMAZING, SUPER-FAST) broom was being held captive by her parents. They didn’t even have the decency to let her use it for class!!!!

So the Gryffindor grabbed a school broom (unfortunately) and mounted it, starting off in the air. Still a little wobbly, though having to use the school brooms for Quidditch this season had helped her grow more accustomed to them. Still, she was faster than the person who SHE WAS NOT competing with.

And also, because she WAS NOT competing with ANYONE she decided to zig zag BOTH laps. She wasn’t showing off. Not at all. That sounded SO unlike her.

Oh, how she loved being in the air.

Mounting her broom she kicked off and headed down the pitch with the others that were already flying. The wind in her hair she laughed and took off around the pitch for her two laps.

THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN!

Once her two laps were over she did a zigzag lap and then landed. "Can we do that again!"

Haraldur kicked off the ground so he could hover a little bit higher off the ground. Keeping those eeeyes on those stuuudents. But also moving as little as he had to. A little contradictory perhaps. He watched them all return to the starting point, one by one they touched back down on the ground in front of him.

”Alright everyone, nice job.” Once they were all gathered in front of him again, it was time to move on to the second part of the warm up. He knew most of them would be reluctant to dismount once they'd finally got the chance to fly but stretching was important. ”Now that your body temperature is increased, it’s time for some stretches. Everyone quickly dismount your brooms, you’ll need to be on the ground for some of these.”

He waited until they all dismounted. He, on the other hand, was still on his broom. He wasn’t the most limber man to say the least. ”Now, standing on the ground, make a letter T with your body and we’ll start with some arm circles. Keep your arms stretched out to the sides and rotate your arms. 10 circles forward and then 10 circles backward. It helps if you start with smaller circles and work your way to larger ones. Then, you’ll be doing some Bow and Bends.” Easily confused with the Bend and Snap which was totally irrelevant in this context. ”You reach for the ground and then come back up with the hands on your hips and push them forward. Do 10 of these.” The flying instructor leaned back comfortably on his broom. Was it too much to bring out a snack for himself while the kids were exercising? Maybe. Maybe that would be pushing it a bit too much. ”The last stretch is body circles, you stand with your feet wide apart and simply do giant circles with your upper body, 5 in each direction. Once you're done, we'll move on.” Chop-chop!

ooc: Time for the 2nd part of the mini-activity: stretching.

Mini-activity 1st part:
- Fly 2 laps around the pitch and 1 lap zig-zagging sharply. Return for a group gathering.
OR;
- Jog 2 laps around the pitch and 1 lap of butt-kick jogging. Return for a group gathering.

Mini-activity 2nd part:
- Arm Circles, 10 forward + 10 backward
- Bow and Bends - 10
- Body Circles - 5 in each direction (10 total)

You have until tomorrow, the 5th of June at approx 8-9 PM CET. - Giving you another 24 hours for the mini-activity until 6th of June around 10 PM CET.

Catching up is always allowed. ^^

Maddie needed a goal every time she exercised? Merlin! Her days would be full of goals at that point, seeing as she considered her constant energy a form of exercise. Heh. Well, one thing was for sure...Maddie wouldn't have to squirm in anticipation in this class. Usually when she had to sit still and patiently wait, she ended up squirming around due to all that stillness. Getting up and moving was her thing!

Two laps around the pitch...right. She'd take that on a broom, please and thank you. She may be energetic, but she was no jogger. When she was sure she had all the directions down pat, the third year summoned her broom into her right hand and hovered on it. Finally, with a kick back, she began her first lap. Ever since she'd made the Quidditch team, Maddie had discovered a new appreciation for the wind blowing her hair backward. It was in a ponytail today, but she could still fill it zipping around behind her as she circled the pitch.

As she reached the turn, she steered her broom to the left and made the turn with ease. Not long after that, there was another turn, and she steered around it, too. She wasn't worried about racing. She just liked the ride. Maddie steered around the last two turns before completing one full lap.

Exciting!

Dismount their brooms? ALREADY? BUT BUT BUT BUUUUUT, they just got on !!!!! This was SO unfair! They should've done the ground stuff first 'cause Professor B really got her hopes up with flying laps. What a tease.

The Gryffindor, reluctantly, made her way back down to the ground, setting the school broom to the side. Stretching. Easy. She made sure she wasn't standing anywhere near her before lifting her arms in the air and beginning arm circles.

One, two, three.... A few in between.... Nine ten.

AND BACKWARDS.

Did they really have to do all of these? Couldn't they play a scrimmage or something?

Flying zig zag was hard totally super easy, and Sylvie definitely didn't definitely did almost fall off her broom like, once three times. Relieved when it was time to dismount, she landed RIGHT in front of Baldvinsson and decided that just this once, she was totally okay with being super close to the teacher. Yup.

At least stretching was easy, she literally did this every single day. Circling her arms and moving her hips, Sylvie easily followed along to the instructions, repeating each stretch ten times, chin jutting out as she continued to stubbornly look straight ahead.

She's still upset, in case certain people wondered.

Not overly excited to be simply stretching, Emmalyn got to work so she could be finished sooner rather than later. First were the arm circles. Those seemed sort of useful. Loose arms meant better throwing of the quaffle. Her arms whirled forward then backward for ten counts each. She felt a bit like a defective windmill, but her shoulders did feel a bit better.

Next was the bending. Whatever a bow and bend was, she wasn't quite sure. She simply bent over, touched her toes, and stood back up a few times. It made her head swim a bit from the blood flow going all which ways. Her stomach was a bit unsettled as well. Before she could stop it, she let out a big belch and instantly flushed red with embarrassment. Her eyes darted around, trying to see if anyone had heard and hoping it was noisy enough out on the pitch to hide the sound.

Moving along as if nothing had happened, she contemplated how to do a body circle without moving her feet. Deciding it was more like a hula hoop movement, she quickly did five in each direction so she would be finished with the stretching.

Now...on to lap two, the one she was meant to zig zag her way through! Again, she was no jogger, and she was glad she hadn't chosen that route, because zigzagging around the pitch sounded like a whole lot of fun! Lap two for the joggers sounded like a whole lot of extra work! *bliiiiink* The third year was already in the air, so all she needed to do now was start zigzagging.

She jerked her broom sharply to the right, but she must have jerked it too quickly, because she almost lost her balance. Her eyes widened, and she instinctively increased her grip on the broom's handle. "Whoo--oaaa," she said to herself. She doubted anybody else could hear her anyway, since most of them were far in the air with the wind carrying their voices away. She steadied her broom and created plan two in her mind while cruising the course of the pitch.

The next time she tried a zigzag, Maddie slowed down and tried to control her broom rather than just jerking it to the side. It actually worked, and even though it wasn't the zigging and zagging she had once pictured, it was at least not a straight pathway. She did get better as the ride around the pitch continued, though. After the second turn, she was able to increase her speed and zigzag more often than not.

By the time she completed the ride around the pitch, she'd almost gotten pretty good at all the zigzagging, which was a good thing, because the next set of instructions had already been given.

Beth had been shivering slightly throughout most of the flying lesson. Still, here she was trying to get ready for flying. Wait – she had to jog? Not fair.

Still, that was what she did. She began jogging around the training grounds. Every few steps she’d try to kick her legs back far enough to plant her foot against her bum – it wasn’t that easy…more so because she wasn’t exactly known to be that shapely of a human…yet, that were. She’d gone around the pitch twice when they were called in. to stretch.

So there she was heading back over toward the group.

”okay,” she muttered as she began doing arm circles. She’d done them of course in the quidditch tryouts…that had been fun.

This. Was. Painful.

... he suddenly wished he were back on the broom and in the air.

As instructed, Daehyun formed the letter T and rotated his arms, already feeling the pain in his muscles at the third circle. He was terribly out of shape, but he kept going, keeping his lips shut to prevent himself from groaning and whining. Once the set of painful arm rotations was finished, both forward and backwards, he moved on to the bows and the bends. Those were way easier, he didn't mind them. His short legs helped every once in a while, as he didn't have to bend that far down to reach the ground, so all was good. Reach down, hands on hips and push and back down to the ground.

To finish off, the body circles were alright, but he felt awfully ridiculous doing so. But he tried to think that no one was minding him. Hopefully.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

With her feet planted firmly on the ground and her arms outstretched so that her body formed the shape of the letter "T", Daisy rotated her arms forwards ten times, starting off in small circles and increasing the size of the rotations and then reversed the motion of her arms for another ten times. She then carefully performed the ten body bends. Daisy found the final exercise which was the body circles, the easiest because they reminded her off using a hula-hoop. Once she had done five in each direction, Daisy was done for the time being.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Was it just her, or did it seem like she’d only just landed and was now already being given more things to do? Stretches? Did this mean not having to show up for quidditch practice later? Because she was sure that at this rate she’s be pretty exercised out by then. Merlin’s beard. Yes. This was about all the exercise she would do for this week.

Jessa dropped the broom to the ground, the soft thud it made as it hit the grass barely audible unless you were really listening. The Ravenclaw got into that ‘T’ position the man had suggested and began first with the arm circles like he’d said. Ten forward....One...Two....Three.....Eight...Nine....Ten. Aaaand ten going backward. Again she mentally did the count, noting the way she was already feeling slightly winded.

Unfit may have been the right word here and it played well off her asthma.

Next was the bending—just when she thought she could catch a breath. Jessa paused, sucking in a fair bit of the crisp air that had to go through her warming charm but pockets of it still went down her throat cold as ice and it caused a small cough. Talk about uncomfortable. Pushing through it, she began the bends. One...Two...Three....Nine....Ten. Phew, the time she stood fully erect again, she could feel the slight spin of her head from the fast movement and that was license enough for her to take the last activity slowly.

Body circles. Fun. She wouldn’t lie, not if directly confronted; after the first two in a right motion, Jessa simply began on the left....for only another two before straightening again and deciding she was done.

This exercise thing, she was being reminded why she didn’t do it very often.

As much as he enjoyed doing some exercise, this is a bit of a stretch because of the cold weather but nevertheless Caleb was not complaining. In the long run, it's quite good to do this right? Normally people are too lazy to do exercises and whatnot during the much colder seasons. He gets it. It was better to just lay in bed and be all cozy and just enjoy the cold breeze.

After the laps around the pitch it was time to do some stretching. Isn't it the other way around though? First the stretching and then the flying? Hmm, but what does Caleb really know?

He stood on the ground as the professor explained the exercises that they will be doing. Simple and easy of course but these are just to make sure that your muscles will be moving. Caleb started off with arm circles. He whirled his arms 10 times at the right pace forward and then backward. He counted in his head. 1, 2, 3 until he got to 10 with each.

And the next one is... what was it called? Bow and bend. Caleb placed his hand on his hips before starting with the exercise. He reached his fingers to touch the ground, bending as far as he could before could go back to his first position, pushing forward. Whoah, a tad bit harder than the first one.

1, 2, 3, 4......... continuing his counting up until 10.

Phew. Did he break a sweat? He still has the last exercise before he can relax. The last one is body circles. Another simple one. That's something he ca do. Spreading his legs and feet apart from each other then placing his hands once more on his hips. After which he begins to move his upper body making giant circles and making sure to count with each move. He did 5 for clock-wise and another 5 for counter clock-wise.

Finally he is done. done. done. done.

Yes. YES let's get MOVING. Abra didn't need to be told twice. Whether he was flying or jogging was a complete no-brainer too. It didn't matter that jogging would warm him up more, he was always an advocate for being in the air.

After they'd been given the all clear to start, Abra called his broom to his hand, mounted it, and kicked off. Normally, in practice, he didn't wear all the layers he wore to flying class because they got in the way of practicing actual tactical stuff, but lessons were different, and it felt woooonderful. Nice and toasty but with all the fun of flying.

Abra couldn't resist the temptation to fly the two laps as fast as he dared - considering his grip and control of the broom was a little compromised by his gloves and many layers - but 'as fast as he dared' was still pretty fast actually.

He finished the two laps reasonably quickly, and had to glance towards those around him to jog his memory regarding the other instruction they had been given, but once he remembered, Abra too switched to zigzagging his third and final lap. It was fun, and the urge to go quickly again was strong, but Abra tried to make it last a little longer just so he could stay in the air as long as possible, but of course he couldn't stay up there forever.

Dismounting back on the pitch, Abra turned his attention to Baldvinsson and prepared to stretch even though stretching was mega boring and he wished he could skip it every single time. He moved back and into a space so he wouldn't, you know, accidentally nail someone in the face with a flailing hand, and raised his arms to form the T shape. Circles, circles, circles with the arms, smaller then bigger. Was that ten? Maybe. It was close to ten, he wasn't really very good at keeping count, if he was honest.

Dropping his hands back to his sides, Abra cast another furtive look around at his classmates to make absolutely sure he was about to do the bow and bend thing right. Still sort of half side-eyeing those nearest him, Abra leaned forward towards the ground while reached for it, then straightened up, moved his hands to behind his hips, and pushed them forwards, arching his back. Merlin, that was a bit of a head-rush, right? Maybe... he should have gone a little slower. For the next few, he did just that, slowing himself down so he didn't get so dizzy he fell over, and feeling his body stretch and loosen up as he reached the (maybe) tenth and final bend.

Moving onto the body circles, again Abra waited until he was sure a bunch of people around him had also started before moving his own body. This time it wasn't that he wanted to check he was doing it right, he just didn't want to do it on his own and look like an idiot. He watched the others closely, moving his body in circles but not counting, and when the person nearest him changed direction, Abra did too. He stopped when they did, and that was him done. More or less.
