If you're wandering around the seventh-floor corridor and you suddenly have the urge to cover your ears, you know you're steadily approaching the Fat Lady's portrait. While it isn't an uncommon fact that the vocal portrait guards the entrance to the Gryffindor Common Room, getting past the Fat Lady without the correct password is no easy feat. Her passion for tip-top security is just as great as her love for good food and drink.
Though the Fat Lady is very particular about who she allows to pass through the portrait hole, she really doesn't mind anyone hanging around in the corridor. At every opportune moment, she will insist that you stop to listen to her "amazing" singing voice or engage in very loud conversation about the latest gossip. Even the Gryffindors themselves have to put up with the antics of this loud and flamboyant woman -- sometimes she won't even let them inside their common room until she is satisfied with their response to her singing or finds the gossip juicy enough to go share with her friend Violet.

Gaston meandered down the hall in the direction of the Fat Lady's portrait. Merlin, he hated calling her that! It seemed so rude, but since he didn't know her real name (or if she even had one) he didn't have much choice. He leaned against the wall to catch his breath from the long walk up four flights of stairs. That was one thing he'd never get used to about Hogwarts!
He glanced at his watch..Hopefully there wouldn't be too many Gryffindors in the common room at this time of day. He was trying to pick a time when he wouldn't disturb them to do his daily rounds... check to make sure the common room was clean, make sure the games in the game room were working and the mini fridges in the dorms stocked, test the security enchantments on the dorms, that sort of thing. His eyes flicked toward the portrait hole. Now where was the Fat Lady?

Laurel headed down the hall, not seeing exactly where she was going since she had her arms loaded with two big bags of scrying materials. She had just finished a lesson in the room of requirement with her fourth years and was intending to head back to the Divination Tower to unload and freshen up before her daily visit down to the dungeons. Somewhere as she walked Laurel had taken a wrong turn and was now heading down the corridor that lead to the Fat Lady’s portrait and Gryffindors common room hidden behind it.
Hands getting sweaty, she wished she had thought of carrying the bags in front of her suspensed in the air by magic, but she hadn’t since she had wanted to carry her precious materials close. Next minute she felt her grip on the bags slip and then she saw and felt how everything in the bags started to roll out of the tops. The many coloured lithomancy stones fell first along with the most precious crystal balls, and then cards and textbooks with big CLANK, CLUNK, CRASH sounds.
Sweating heavily now not only on her hands, but on her forehead as she surveyed the damage Laurel noted with horror that she wasn’t the person in the corridor. Glancing over to her colleague she quipped out akwardly. "Oh hello Gaston!"
The Fat lady was just coming back from a rather fabulous tea party on the fourth floor. In which she spent most of it talking rather loudly about something she had seen with her own eyes! Violet had been most pleased with the gossip as well!
She was humming rather loudly as she came back to her portrait and saw Marchand there.
“Password Darlinggg?” She trilled out before wrinkling her nose at a loud noise. The Head Of Slytherin House? Oh no no this wouldn’t do! She wouldn’t be opening her precious portrait while she was around.
However, this could be a good opportunity for some gossip! Were Gaston and Laurel meeting? Clandestinely?

Gasp!
Where was some popcorn when she needed it?
Gaston hadn't been standing there long then loud humming jerked him out of his thoughts. He knew the Fat Lady was back, even before he heard her asking for the password. He blinked, unsure whether to be amused or weirded out by her calling him "darling". All the years he'd been head of Gryffindor, and he still wasn't quite used to that!
He smiled, but before he could offer the Fat Lady a greeting or the password, he heard loud clanking and crashing. His head whipped around, spilling his black hair into his eyes. At first he thought it might be Peeves making all that racket, but then he heard Laurel's voice. "Hello, Laurel," he replied, his eyes darting from his colleague to the scattered mess of divination supplies on the floor and back. The sweat on her forehead didn't go unnoticed and earned a slight eyebrow raise and a look of concern. He pulled a handkerchief out of his jacket pocket and handed it to her. "Here, I'll help you pick this up..." He bent, gathering a few textbooks that had landed near him and stacking them.

Eyes darting around, Laurel with a sense of despair and sadness too, she surveyed the scattered mess of divination supplies lying all over the floor. A few of the crystal balls had broken along with a few other items, but she’d need to check on that later. Hearing Gaston's voice she whipped her blue eyes up to look at her colleague, managing to think that she probably didn’t look her best. She could feel the sweat, dripping down into her eyes. Licking her lips Laurel quipped out distractedly. "Oh, hello Gaston,"
Starting to gather up the lithomancy stones that had rolled away she shot him a grateful glance as she saw Gaston stack up textbooks. "Thank you, I don’t know what happened. I’m usually not clumsy." Continuing to pick up the stones, coming closer and closer to where the Fat Lady’s portrait hang. Turning her gaze to Fat Lady, feeling obligated to say something Laurel greeted "Hello Ms Fat Lady, lovely day isn’t it?"

She turned her attention to Laurel and her eyes briefly narrowed before nodding. “It’s such a gloriousssss dayyy today!” She trilled lightly as she spun around in her frame.

Gaston finished stacking the textbooks and handed them back to Laurel. He smiled, but his face fell slightly at her words. "You're not clumsy; it could've happened to anybody," he said with a small smile. Those were some awfully full bags to carry, especially without magic. It was bound to happen eventually...
His eyes darted to the broken crystal balls littering the floor, and he drew his wand, performing a nonverbal Reparo. He wasn't sure if they would still work - Divination was one of his worst subjects, that and Potions - but at least it would get the broken glass off the floor before some unsuspecting student stepped on it and got hurt. He'd just replaced his wand when the Fat Lady's voice made him jump out of his skin. He'd almost forgotten she was there until just now!
Oh, good Godric Gryffindor, she didn't think...? Knowing her, she probably did, and it would be all over the school by dinnertime. He turned toward her, his eyes begging her not to start any rumors. "Hello, Madame," he greeted politely. He refused to call her "Fat", even if everybody else at Hogwarts did. "How are you today?"

Laurel ignored the Fat Lady’s presence even if it was hard as she started to restack all the major arcana cards that had gotten loose. She had just piled up about 50 of them when Gaston handed her back all her textbooks. Smiling and slightly blushing she said "Thank you for helping me Gaston, and thank you for saying that. I usually have good balance, you know I played quidditch when I was in school." Many years ago now, but still then she had been quite a good flier and had had no problem with keeping her balance, now it seemed to be another story.
Refilling her bags with stuff Laurel asked with a glance up at Gaston "So you’re here to pay the lions your daily visit?" It seemed plausible at least, they were both Heads of houses and it was in their duties to check in on their students every day. Straightening up Laurel turned her head to the Fat Lady and inquired "What makes it a glorious day for you madam?"

Gaston returned Laurel's smile with a small one of his own, but why was she blushing? Really, there was no reason to be embarrassed! "It was no trouble at all," he replied, handing her a newly repaired crystal ball. Her next words got a slight eyebrow raise from him. No, he didn't know she played quidditch. "Oh, really? I wouldn't know anything about that... I was always useless at quidditch! What position did you play?"
He looked around for any stray cards or pieces of broken glass that may still be lying around when Laurel's voice caused his head to whip around. "In a manner of speaking," he said, brushing a stray lock of dark hair out of his eyes. "More making sure everything's in working order than paying them a visit; I doubt they'd enjoy my company that much..." He stared at the floor sheepishly, only looking up when Laurel's attention went to the Fat Lady; he was grateful for the distraction! His eyes darted toward the portrait, wondering what her reply would be.
