It was a cool pre-lunch morning of the first of February when you make your way to the first floor for another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. Anyone who knew Hirsch's style might know what not to expect: no chairs, no desks and nothing that looked like it belonged to a normal classroom.
However, something you might not have expected is how much the classroom looks less like a classroom and more like an extension of the Hospital Wing. The room is brightly lit, with the light from outside illuminating the four hospital beds in the very centre of the room. With just one look at these beds, it's clear that there's something laying there but what exactly it is is unclear, especially with the black cloth that's conveniently covering them up.
Curious? You might be.
Looking towards the front of the room, you'll notice a desk and, leaning against it, the familiar figure of Professor Hirsch. Cool, calm and collected, the man has his arms crossed against his chest and his legs crossed at the ankles and an expression that says that this was a very normal setup of the room. On the desk is a box of rubber gloves, with the following note on the board directly behind it:
Quote:
Please pick up a pair of rubber gloves on your way to your seat
So come in, take a pair of gloves and make yourselves comfortable on the mat around the beds. Class is about to start.
OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Class will continue tomorrow (eveningtime GMT+1). Class has already begun but you're more than welcome to jump in if you haven't done so already. Simply pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time. Hope you have fun! ^^

Junia's eyebrows lifted questioningly at the sight of the hospital bed, her own interest in the field of medicine having been on her mind a lot lately. It was like her thoughts come to life, though this was a bit more creepy than anything she would've thought up.
"Hey Professor," She said as she grabbed a pair of gloves and offered a smile. This lesson would be interesting.
She made the short trip to the classroom, ready for whatever might happen that day. She was always a bit on edge when entering a DADA class, she preferred knowing what was going to happen over the unexpected.
Not surprisingly, the view upon entering the classroom was out of the ordinary. Hospital beds, mats, and rubber gloves were just a few of the things sending up red flags in her mind. With a nervous sigh, she grabbed her gloves and headed towards the mats around the covered beds. She didn't even have it in her to try and guess what was hidden under the black fabric. "Good morning, Professor Hirsch." She greeted with the best smile she could muster under the circumstances.
Walking through the door to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, Lydia suddenly stopped short. Had she accidentally taken a wrong turn and ended up in the hospital wing? What was with the beds? She read the note on the board and took in the sight of Professor Hirsch leaning casually like nothing at all was unusual. They were in for another interesting lesson, it looked like.
Lydia collected a pair of gloves as she was instructed and nodded to the professor. "Good morning, Professor Hirsch," she said, before plopping down onto the mat near the beds.

As Maddie headed up to the first floor of the castle, she felt grateful that this lesson wouldn't be out in the freezing cold the way Charms class had been. Indoor classes were a welcome change, thank you very much. As she entered the classroom, she went to take a seat, but... Oh, right. DADA class. Mats it would be!
Spotting the notice on the board, she grabbed a pair of rubber gloves then headed to claim a mat. She didn't claim anything too close to the beds, because she had no idea who or what was underneath those black cloths. One just does not wander on up to a bed with an unknown occupant in the middle of Defense class.
Ahem. "Hello, Professor!" she said, her gaze traveling back and forth between the beds and the man in the front of the room.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy entered the DADA classroom and noticed the interesting set-up, including the box of rubber gloves on the desk. "Good morning, Professor," Daisy greeted with a smile as she picked up a pair of gloves and put them on. She made her way to the mat around the beds.

One subject Stasya had never contemplated skiving off from was DADA. On the one hand, that was because it was one of her best subjects, at least when anything close to dueling was involved, but she also knew that it was because Professor Hirsch was possibly about as close to a father figure in her eyes as could be possible. Minus a biological factor, of course. But she’d looked at him that way ever since she’d first set foot in Hogwarts and he knew just as much about what was going on with her family as her friends did. Well, and probably the headmistress given that Runes lesson. But the DADA professor knew all the details.
Either way, it was an optimistic blonde fifteen-year-old who had headed up to the DADA classroom before lunch. An optimistic but also slightly distracted blonde fifteen-year-old, since February meant Valentine’s Day and that meant she had an excuse to bake. Even if she generally didn’t need an excuse, an excuse was welcome…
The first thing about the classroom as she’d arrived that piqued her curiosity was the brightness of the room. That wasn’t normal for DADA, at all, and she’d blinked as she walked inside to see hospital beds occupied by who knew what under black shrouds. The mystery was sort of DADA, if not Hogwarts in general. It was expected, anyway, just as the sight of the professor leaning casually at the front of the room was. “Good morning, Professor Hirsch!,” she said brightly, giving him a smile as she retrieved a pair of gloves from the desk he was leaning against. Granted, she didn’t know what he knew. Namely, if the headmistress discussed her Runes assignment with him, or more likely probably she’d have discussed it with Professor Marchand. But either way, she wasn’t sure. Therefore, there wasn’t any reason to worry him.
Plus, she chose a seat closest to one of the beds. Maybe that way she’d be able to find out what to expect first.

The unexpected was what was to be expected when it came to DADA, so Ronan didn't even blink when he saw the set-up of the room. Though, it did give him ideas on what they would be learning this lesson. He didn't voice those thoughts though, preferring to see if he was right, and how many of his classmates it didn't even cross the minds of. 'Cause, just like the smell of the corpse flower being a part of the potion from the Potions/Herbology lesson, this was pretty obvious.
Instead, he retrieved a pair of the rubber gloves with a "Hey, Professor Hirsch" and chose a mat to sit on. Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, he was feeling much better, thanks.

To say the least, Vivian was getting and feeling better since certain things happened. She was grateful that none of her friends had pressed on the topic, nor did they force her to spill on the reason why she had herself pulled out of classes for a week. Plus, other things happened too, and the Head Girl found herself no longer crying about her loss. She was okay, she knew it. She will be even more okay.
But when the Head Girl had finally entered the classroom, she almost didn't want to be there. The first thing her eyes were able to register were the hospital beds, and honestly, they were the last things she wanted to deal with today. She bit on the insides of her cheeks to stop herself. She did not need a reminder of her loss—a salt in the wound.
Foregoing her usual song addition to her DADA lesson soundtrack, Vivian finally looked at Professor Hirsch and gave him an acknowledging nod. "Good morning, Professor," the blond greeted him before moving to get herself a pair of gloves and sitting beside Junia, who happened to be the only one present that she could stay close to, and she was her dorm mate. "Hi." Vivian didn't want to be here, yeah, but she was strong.

Rylee was here and she was ready! She always enjoyed DADA lessons and getting a bit of extra practice outside of lessons with Hirsch only made her enjoy it more. The more she learned the more she wanted to learn!
The hospital beds in the center of the classroom was something that couldn't be missed the moment she walked in. Her curiosity was only slightly peaked until she realized something was clearly beneath the black clothes covering the beds. What was it? What would they be learning today?! If she sat close enough would she be able to get a look underneath one of the cloths?! WIGGLE.
"Good morning, Professor!" Rylee smiled brightly in greeting as she made her way to his desk to collect a pair of gloves. With the gloves in hand she found herself a place to sit. Front and center right near one of the beds so she wouldn't miss a thing.

Max did a little double take when he stepped into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. For a split second he feared that in his pre-OWL frazzled state, he’d somehow wandered into the Hospital Wing. But nope, there was Professor Hirsch… and rubber gloves? Okay.
The fifth year greeted the Professor with a smile and helped himself to a pair of the gloves on his way past.
He chose a spot on the mat that wasn’t too close to the beds, but it wasn’t his usual spot right at the back either. He was curious. Hopefully, there was something COOL hidden under there.

That was one thing she liked about DADA every lesson the classroom was sit up exactly for whatever the lesson was about. Sometime it left you really guessing what the lesson was going to be about… and sometimes it was pretty obvious. You would hardly ever see a desk in the room. No complaints here.
Hospital beds? That was a good indication that this was going to be one of the interesting kind of lessons today. Although her head of house had a way of making every lesson interesting. She grabbed a pair of rubber gloves. ”Good Morning, Professor.” As she passed on the way to find a mat to sit on around one of the beds.

Rubber gloves? Interesting...and a little ominous in Nettie's opinion.
Still, the first year happily took a pair and headed to her normal seat near the front, which had of course been replaced by a mat, and plopped down. "Hello Professor!" she said happily, greeting him as she always did.
So, this place looked like a hospital wing, so....what did that mean exactly? Healing stuff? But that wasn't really DEFENSE was it...?

Defense. It was one of those lessons that Skylar had a love-hate relationship. Surprisingly she'd managed an Outstanding on her OWLs, but somehow there were aspects that she seemed to struggle with. But at least Hirsch was a good professor and it didn't help that he was easy on the eyes (although all the professors kind of were).
But she did nearly freeze at the sight of the hospital beds. While she had previously considered creatures healing as a career possibility, the presence of the hospital beds were a reminder of someone else. And it pained her to think of him, in every possible way. Was it too late to slip a puking pastille into her mouth to skive off this lesson?
Curling up in her sister's bed sounded good right about now instead, but Skylar drew a deep breath. She couldn't very well be an effective Cursebreaking Auror if she couldn't even deal with heartbreak, could she? With that she took a step forward and a "Good morning, Professor," polite enough, although refrained from eye contact. She spotted Junia and Vivian but honestly, wasn't in the mood to sit near them, so instead sought a seat near the window. She could distract herself with the pretty winter scenery outside, maybe.

It wasn't long before the first student arrived, complete with the kind of look he half-expected to get because of the setup of the room. He might've been used to it by now, what with the number of odd setups he'd had over the years, but it didn't make it any less amusing.
Although, he was quite proud that she hadn't decided to let her curiosity get the better of her and take a peek at what was on the hospital bed.
"Hey, Miss Botros," he said, shooting her a dimpled!smile. Did she have an idea what was the topic for today's lesson? Hm?

Hirsch had to admit: the scene might've been unsettling for some of the students. The hospital bed in particular gave off a bad sign, a sign of the sick and/or the dead, especially when mixed with Defence. But it was just one of those topics, unfortunately.
However, when the next student started to walk in, he couldn't help but wonder if this lesson needed an age limit to it. Gruesome probably wasn't for everyone but defence certainly was, which was the current dilemma.
In the meantime, he shot the Hufflepuff a smile in return and said, "Good morning, Miss Walsh." Maybe he needed to keep an extra eye out.

Here was a slightly more amusing reaction to the setup of the room, simply because of the dramatics of it. And if Hirsch currently wasn't trying to figure out whether age limits were needed for this lesson, he would've been trying hard to contain his amusement.
As it were, he did manage a smile at the young Slytherin before saying, "Morning, Miss Beckett."
And no, she wasn't in the wrong place.

Nope.

...... Ah!
While he was delighted to see the young Gryffindor in his lesson - and would've been very worried if she didn't turn up for some reason - there were also a few things he knew that made him worry about her and keep a close eye on her. She was the daughter of one of his oldest friends, after all, and he knew he couldn't protect her against everything - that would be impossible - but he did like to try.
Though, currently, the smile on her face was enough to water down any of the other things he'd heard recently.
"Morning, Stasya," he said, shooting her a particularly wide, dimpled!smile.

Someone who wasn't even surprised by the setup of the room? Maybe that's something he should've expected, given the number of times he'd magicked the room to look anything but what it normally looks like. Again, maybe he should've kept the room looking like your average classroom. Given the students a real element of surprise by how normal it looked...

It was pretty customary to get a song from the Head Girl, something that was linked to the topic of today's lesson or the setup of the room. It was something that had been going on since the girl was a first year, and looking much livelier than she currently did. So when she didn't provide a soundtrack to the lesson, and didn't so much as smile, the man frowned slightly. This wasn't a cause for concern, was it?
"Morning, Miss Fairfield," he said, giving her a small smile. Green eyes found Junia momentarily and he gave her a look as if to say to look after her.

Students were amusing, weren't they?
Arms still crossed at his chest, Hirsch let an amused smile cross his face as he watched the young Slytherin enter the room. It was probably these kind of reactions that he enjoyed the most and was, partially, the reason behind his weird classroom setups. There was also the fact that it would help to wake up the students but, given what time of the day it was, if they weren't awake by now, then that was going to be a cause for concern.
It was probably those exams.
Hirsch returned the smile and even nodded his head at Mr Carden before the boy went to sit down on the mat. Which, wasn't right at the back? Good good.

If Hirsch could read her thoughts, he would've felt very proud that she thought he could make every lesson interesting. Maybe it had a lot to do with the subject itself but it still would've given him a boost in self-confidence. After all, which teacher wouldn't want to be told that they could make every lesson interesting?
For the time being, however, he gave the Ravenclaw a smile as she entered and said, "Morning, Miss Primeaux." Hopefully, they will think that this lesson was an interesting because he certainly thought it was.

Maybe.

The sight of the next student to enter the room did spark a thought in his head: one that he'd been meaning to ask the girl but hadn't gotten round to it. And that was whether she'd had the chance to talk to the Headmistress recently? Because while he could easily introduce her to as many Aurors as possible, especially seeing as he was dating one, the Headmistress would probably do a better job of providing the Cursebreaking experience.
Just saying.
Shaking the thought away, Hirsch smiled at the Captain and said, "Morning, Miss Diggory...." There was not a chance that he'd miss that small bit of hesitation between the three Slytherin seventh years, one that made him furrow his eyebrows as he glanced between the three of them. Had he missed something...?
On second thought, it was none of his business.
While Hirsch was greeting the students, he stole momentary glances at his watch to make sure he wasn't running behind time. When it looked as though no one else was going to enter the room, he whipped out his wand and flicked it towards the door, causing it to shut with a loud SNAP!
Did that get people's attention? Good.
"Good morning and welcome to another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson!" he called, the wide smile returning to his face, "Today's going to be a fairly gruesome lesson but you'll learn something important about a new form of dark magic and a way to defend yourselves against it."
Maybe it was a good idea this lesson was taking place at the time of day it was: the amount of vomiting that might occur if it took place after lunch would be.... unfortunate.
"I want to talk to you about a spell called the Flesh-Eating Hex, which does exactly as the name suggests." Funnily enough. Hirsch raised his wand and gave it another flick, this time, at the blackboard behind him. A small chalk drawing of a human figure appeared, clean and untouched by magic. "One cast, the Flesh-Eating Hex starts to eat away at the person's flesh at the exact spot that it hits the body." At this, he gave his wand a complicated wave at the drawing on the blackboard. A deep red light shot out of it and hit the figure, causing a spot of red chalk to appear on the chest drawn on the board. "It slowly moves outwards, consuming more and more of the flesh as it goes." As he said this, the spot of red chalk started to move outwards, filling up more of the drawing of the body as it went.
"The infected skin ends up being reddish-purple in colour so you can see if you, or someone else, has been hit by this spell and can help them. It has other side effects to it as well, including fever and vomiting." Pause. "Overall, it's a very painful way to die because you're, essentially, being eaten alive." Anyone feeling sick yet?
"So what I wanted to know from you is: why would someone want to use a spell like this? What uses, positive or negative, does this spell have?" Let's get those brains thinking.
OOC: Ohmygooosh look at you guys ;____; *fangirls* Class has officially started so please keep chatter to a minimum! If you haven't posted already and want to, feel free to jump in, I don't mind! Just pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time ^^
The question is a simple one: why would someone want to use the Flesh-Eating Hex? What uses, positive or negative, does it have? Feel free to think outside the box, we want to see how your charrie thinks! Also, please be considerate of other people's answers and not repeat any!
If the question/wording is confusing/doesn't make sense, please do give me a nudge and I'll be happy to clarify it for you <3
I'll continue this lesson tomorrow at roughly eveningtime GMT+1if I'm not going crazy over the World Cup.
Gruesome and flesh-eating should not be use in a class for students. No. She was not excited about it at all. Did he seriously think they would be using the spell? Her stomach turned when she realized that the answer was yes. He really must believe they needed to know about such a horrible spell. Otherwise, he would not be spending an entire lesson on it.
Trying to go to her happy place and believe that there must be some good in a spell like that, she searched her mind for any positives she could find. After a moment, and coming to terms with the queasy feeling rolling through her body, she raised her hand to answer. "Sir, could the flesh-eating hex be used in a medical capacity? Like if the person had a bad infection or another flesh eating virus, use this one to eat away the bad tissue, then stop the hex before it does more damage?" That would be a great use, if it really could work that way.
She pulled out her notes and began to jot down information about the class and the terrible flesh-eating hex. She tried to remain as separated from the reality of the topic as possible, simply focusing on the academic aspects. Any time she let the reality of the discussion come to mind, her stomach lurched and nausea washed over her.

"Hey Viv," Junia replied softly as she was joined by the head girl. She'd been worried about the blonde, did she know? It wasn't in her nature to pry, but the Botros girl did make sure to be around for her friend if she was needed, and Hirsch's look was met with a firm nod of the head because yes, she'd be looking after her now. She was happy to do so for all that Vivian and her other dorm mates had been doing for her the past few years.
Lucky it was only a chalk drawing showing the damage a flesh-eating hex could do because Junia was definitely wrinkling her nose as the illustration changed before her eyes, showcasing just how bad the spell could be. It was one she hoped she'd never have to deal with, though she was more than happy to learn ways to combat it. As for the positives and negatives, well, there were a few.
"How slow does it spread, professor? One seeking to harm someone could take advantage of a slow moving spell because the victim might not identify it correctly at onset. By the time they know what they're dealing with, the pain might be too much to bear, giving the opponent the upper hand."

Her eyes were wide when the first question was that. WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO DO THAT? It sounded so gross, her face probably showed these thoughts as she mouthed yuck before focusing back on what was being said.
"If you were a really mean person maybe you would like seeing people get their flesh eaten? But that is super gross and I don't know why anyone would want that."
No, no, no..
There was no one that mean, was there? She knew this was defense against the dark arts, but did people really want to be dark anymore? Did people like being like that?
No, people were nice, she would keep telling herself that.

Maybe it was just the fact that there was something mysterious lurking underneath a black cloth lying on a hospital bed... Maybe it was the fact that this was Defense class, and she kind of thought any sort of dark and dangerous creature or surprise attack might pop out at any given second... Or maybe, just maybe, it was the fact that Hirsch was just that good at scaring the wits out of people...
Whatever it was, though, caused Maddie to slightly jump in surprise when the door slammed shut. Alright. Paying attention! Got'cha!
Wait...did he say flesh eating?! EWWWWW. If there was a practical activity today, she was volunteering to sit this one out. "Ughhh," she whispered to herself, as she watched Hirsch's little demonstration on the board. DISGUSTING. She sloooooowly raised her hand, as her face took on an expression that clearly said she was grossed out.
"Okay, so as for the negatives, this is disgusting," she pointed out. "Like you said, it's an awful way to die. As for positives? Uhhh..." Were there any positives? ... "I'd have to agree with Emmalyn. Maybe it could heal areas of the body that have been damaged, and then the hex could be stopped before too much unexpected damage could happen."

Well, this wasn't what he'd been expecting, at all. He'd been expecting a lesson on first aid, seeing as the room was set-up like the hospital wing and all (and seeing some of his classmates faces, they probably wished it was about that). But, he could see the point of the lesson though. And it would be useful to know when it came to Auror training.
Also, some of these kids needed to grow-up. There were some not very nice people in the world. It was just a fact of life. As long as there were good people who stood up for what was right, they would be okay.
"As a way of offing someone, it would be pretty hard to trace back to whoever was responsible, seeing as it would be easy to assume that it was an actual flesh-eating virus like the ones Emmalyn mentioned. And by the time anyone realized what had happened, it would probably be too late." I.E., the victim would either be dead or almost dead.
"As for why, well, there are some evil people out there....." Everything wasn't always all sunshine and roses.

Junia's presence was very much appreciated, even if they only sat in silence. Vivian had felt really alone and lost for the past month, so it was really nice to know there was someone for him despite her lack of words and explanation of what really was going on inside her head. She did, however, notice the silent exchange between Professor Hirsch and her dorm mate.
When Sky entered the room, Vivian's eyes simply follow her as her other dorm mate chose a seat away from them. She had heard about the nasty relationship stuff that happened, and the Head Girl too had her opinions with regards to it. Still, she felt that, given her own fragile state, it was best to let Skylar be.
Oh, she did figure today's lesson was going to be more gruesome. Why would there be hospital beds here, anyway? Vivian cringed a little bit at the mention of a flesh-eating hex. That was a thing, apparently. And they were supposed to learn it today. Someone should have told her about this before she entered the room. There was a sickening vibe around her, especially at the thought of being eaten alive. Merlin.
Keeping and trying her very best to remain calm and focused, Vivian raised her hand a little. "Will it involve blood, Professor?" She asked. "'Cause if it didn't, I guess... it's a less bloody way to attack someone." Not that she had thought of it. She would never. The Head Girl squeezed her eyes shut for a moment to take a deep breath.

The maybe-secretly-extra-special grin she’d gotten from the professor was much appreciated, even if Stasya still wasn’t sure exactly what he knew about what had been going on with her this term. Of course, plenty of others looked like they needed comfort or something more than her at the moment, and she’d been tempted to go over and give Vivi and/or Sky a hug but the lesson had started before she could follow through on the plan.
Instead, she’d found herself turning her attention to the hospital bed near her, grey-green eyes silently trying to determine if there was some sort of flesh eating hex zombie hiding under the shroud. An Inferius with the hex even, but she also doubted Professor Hirsch would go that far just for a lesson. That and she was hoping, for once, that this was just a theoretical lesson and not that he was going to teach them the actual hex. She did like dueling, but she wasn’t about to cast any sells that would eat someone alive
Even so, she’d found herself raising a hand, maybe a bit hesitantly but she figured he’d understand. “Maybe someone would use the spell as a distraction? I mean, it’s a really cruel and icky distraction, but it would probably stop them from retaliating,” she said, glancing at Junia. Basically what she’d aid but not. She really didn’t like trying to get into the mindset of a Dark wizard, and the professor really should know that. She’d give him the benefit of the doubt, though.
That and the only positive use of the hex was probably what Emmalyn had said. She couldn’t think of any others.

Daehyun was... well, he didn't know how to feel about that lesson. From the moment he'd seen the hospital beds and wore gloves, he knew something gruesome awaited them, but now that he knew the spell they'd be talking about, he didn't want to think about what was on those beds. Surely not real flesh to practice on?!
As for uses, he'd been about to offer the same answer as Emmalyn, but the Hufflepuff had been faster to voice it. But even so, it seemed like an awfully painful way to remove dead tissue - he would rather cut the whole thing off than have his flesh eaten - Merlin, this was getting disgusting. Instead of answering, he focused on taking notes.
But really, he'd never use the spell. If for medical reasons, surely there were other alternatives, and otherwise - he would never wish to inflict that kind of pain on anyone... he'd rather go for a stunning spell... or anything else. Just no raw flesh in sight. He would be the one slowed down at the sight of it.

She giggled softly. "I am, Professor." Very excited that is. Whatever it was they were about to be learning was surely going to be good. By the time Hirsch spoke again she was practically wiggling in anticipation.
Fairly gruesome. If this was this supposed to deter her excitement in learning something new, it wasn't. Exactly the opposite was happening. The more she heard about what they were learning during this lesson the more close attention she paid. While the Flesh-eating hex didn't sound at all pretty and the results of it could be disastrous if not reversed in time it was also somewhat fascinating at the same time. Dark magic wasn't something to mess with, she knew that but it didn't stop her from wanting to know as much about it as possible. In the safety of one of these lessons was perfect. Questions could be asked and information would be given.
As for positive and negative reasons for using this spell anything she could think of right now was already said. There was no real need to repeat any of it. Right now she would remain silent but take notes on everything being said as she pulled out some parchment and a quill to do just that.

Professor Hirsch had this Slytherin’s complete and utter attention. In fact, Max’s expression as he listened was almost one of awe. He’d hoped for something cool, and the professor had delivered. Gruesome?? Flesh-eating hex??? It was gross. But definitely a fantastically cool kind of gross.
That corpse flower in Herbology had him thinking about zombies…… but this??? A spell that ate away at human flesh?? Fever and vomiting? Eaten alive? This was literally a zombie hex.
Max stayed quiet and eyed the hospital beds, his imagination running wild thinking about what was concealed under were cloth. Maybe there was actual zombies.
…. and now he didn’t know if he ought to be excited or freaked out.
