After following the sloping, earthy passage to the Hufflepuff Common Room, you'll find yourself in a large circular space. The room is cozy, low-ceilinged, and filled with natural sunlight streaming in from the circular windows that are level with the ground outside the castle. If you peer out, you'll have an amazing view of the grass, flowers, and perhaps even people lounging around.
The room is decorated in the Hufflepuff house colors, filled with beautifully polished wooden furniture, and the comfortably worn sofa and chairs sitting in front of the fire place for those looking to relax. The portrait of Helga Hufflepuff has been hung with care above the wooden mantelpiece and she looks out over the common room, holding her golden cup up in a toast.
For your seven years here at Hogwarts this will be your home and there's no better place to get to know your second family than right here.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

She knew she would most likely have a stomachache that night, but it was worth it.
After swallowing her too large of bite, she sat the plate down on the table and flopped back into the overstuffed couch. It was still close enough to the fire for warmth, but not so close as to make her fall asleep. It was one of her favorite places to sit in the common room.
Daisy smiled as she grabbed a cookie, thanking Emmalyn. She sat down next to Emmalyn on the couch and took a small bite. "I've noticed that you seem different, personality wise. Is something troubling you?"

She adjusted her body to better face Daisy. "This has been a much harder year than I thought it would be." She paused before continuing. "I mean, not hard like your year...with your dad and all...but, I thought I would be better at this magic thing by now." She took a breath and exhaled slowly. "It feels like most of the first years are already preforming complicated spells, ones we haven't even gone over in class yet, and I'm still struggling with basic spells like diffindo and reparo."
She reached out, grabbed another cookie off the plate, and took a giant bite. "These are so good." She mumbled through a mouth full of cookie. She was going to have to thank both Schmoop and Tippin soon.

Daisy listened attentively as Emmalyn spoke about her problems. When her friend had finished, Daisy placed a comforting hand on her shoulder and spoke, "Em, don't be so hard on yourself. Everyone has troubles with doing spellwork. If you want, I can help you."

Emmalyn nodded in agreement. She was being hard on herself, but it didn't lessen her want to do better. "I would love to practice with you. Most of the time it ends up I'm doing one silly little thing wrong, and the entire spell goes sideways." She shrugged and took another bite of her cookie.
"So, how have things been going for you? We don't get much chance to talk during class or quidditch practice." Somehow the fall had flown by and it was quickly nearing Christmas holiday. "Are you going home for the holiday?" She almost didn't ask, wondering if it would be too hard for her to talk about. "I'll be staying here again."

She nodded in agreement. "Defense spells are extra hard." Maybe it was because her heart was never into defense spells. She couldn't imagine ever wanting to cause any sort of harm to another, even if it was to protect herself.
"I'm happy you will get to go home for a bit for Christmas, but it will be nice to have you back for part of the holiday. Maybe we can practice then?" That would be a good time with not so many other students around. Having others watch her made her nervous, and more likely to mess a spell up.

Daisy smiled. "I'd love for us to practice during the holidays. I think it will be great!"
Tinka appeared in the Hufflepuff common room, carrying a large tray of hand whipped meringue Christmas ornaments for the studentsies to view and munch on before the holiday. There were enough meringue ornaments for each of the studentsies to have several, plus meters and meters of hand strung popcorn garland to hang about.
She quickly went to work setting out the decorations and, as her tray emptied of ornaments, more treats began to appear from under the pile. All sorts of baked treats could be seen and were available to any of the Hufflepuffs. All they needed to do was ask.
Daisy smiled. "I'd love for us to practice during the holidays. I think it will be great!"
She munched on another chocolate chip cookie. The platter was almost empty and her stomach was feeling the wrath of eating so many treats. "Sound like a plan." She leaned back, letting the warmth of the fire spread across her face and heat up her toes. If she closed her eyes, she was certain she would be asleep in no time. Maybe that's what she needed. A nice, long nap.

So...Derf had never really considered feet. Nothing outside of the usual clipping of his toe nails and other necessary cleaning but now that Professor Vance had set this assignment it was sorta all he could think about. So he had written home to mum who had been more than willing to oblige in sending him a few things. Manned with several hot pink kits and a box of polishes, the fifth year made his way to the common room to meet with Maddie as promised...and hoped she didn't mind that he took advantage of this time to make a little impromptu house bonding sort of thing. Though people were gonna have to teach him because he didn't really know what he was doing either.
An array of towels he had requested from the house elves, and some bowls filled with warm water to clean, Derf set up an area right in front of the fireplace for this pedicure party and divination reading session. And just to make sure everyone knew...he had fashioned a little sign and placed it nearby.

Okay, so can we all agree that Derf Ashburry-Hawthorne was amazing? I mean, seriously. Not only was he the one guy Maddie could always count on to be ready, willing, and able to put a hundred percent into everything, but he had also set up a whole pedicure party. Plus, he was a cutie patootie, but that was a whole different story for a whole different day.
But for now, let's just agree that he's pretty much a 10, mmkay?
This whole silent conversation was going through Maddie's head as she made her way to the common room, foot cast in hand and book bag in hand. It's too bad this couldn't have been just a pedicure party, because then that would have meant 100% relaxation and fun. It wasn't, though, so Maddie was ready to go with all her Divination materials and this horrible foot she'd been carrying around for who knew how long.
"Whoa, Derf!" she said, instead of a usual hello. He'd really gone all out, hadn't he? "This is awesome! Thanks for organizing this!" She put her foot cast and book bag down and surveyed all the pedicure materials. She already knew what color toenail polish she wanted! Pink, of course.
Word of the pedicure party spread quickly throughout the Hufflepuff dorms. Emmalyn gathered her divination notebook, cast of her feet, and a small bottle of foot massage lotion, then bolted off to the common room.
Upon her arrival, she was surprised at how organized the gathering was. "Wow! This is really neat. Thanks for setting this up, Derf." She eyed the giant box of nail polish colors "Who get's to paint your toes?" She asked her prefect as she placed the bottle of peppermint foot massage lotion next to the other supplies to share. "Hey Maddie, this is neat, isn't it?"
After putting her foot cast down and getting out her notebook, Emmalyn wondered who else would be joining them. It was going to be a fantastic opportunity to get their divination assignment completed, and have fun. "So, fun fact, I'm sort of great at nail art. I can paint a badger on your big toenail, if anyone wants." She blushed a little, wondering what her quidditch teammates would think of it. She wasn't an overly girly sort of girl. At least not in the fix your hair and put on makeup kind of way.
Tinka arrived with an audible pop, tray of treats in hand. She had heard talk of a party in the Hufflepuff Common Room and nothing made her happier than serving the studentsies treats. Her tray was piled high with chocolate eclairs, jam doughnuts, warm chocolate chip cookies, mini custard tarts, and even marshmallows to roast over the common room fire.
She shuffled over to the spa area "Mister Derf, Miss Maddie, Miss Emmalyn" she looked up at the three with her bright pink eyes and smiled. "Tinka bring snackies for eating." She gently placed the tray on the table near the fire and turned back to the studentsies. Her eyes caught sight of all the beautiful nail polish colors. Especially the pink bottle that matched her eyes. Then, she glanced down at her own feet and momentarily wondered what her toes would look like painted pink.

Derf had, admittedly, forgotten all about the foot cast - his own still tucked into his enchanted suitcase discarded at the moments by the fireplace - but that sorta posed a bit of a problem SHOULD Professor Myers have accepted his hurried invitation to this little event. They had no means of making a cast for the professor here - no self filling bucket of clay and all that.
........um. Hmm.
"Hiya Maddie," he smiled at her as she arrived. "Thank my mum. She pulled through in a pinch. Though...I don't really know what half of this stuff does." There was something that sorta reminded him of a cheese grater and that was really weird to compare to when they were talking about feet.
Emmeline joined them soon and the fifth year offered her a small wave. "You are," he winked. "'Cause you asked first." She could paint a badger on his toe if she wanted as well, he didn't see anything weird about wearing a bit of nail polish. "So....I reckon to start we sorta just soak our feet in warm water...cause the instructions on the foot scrub say to do that...but while we do that we could pass our foot casts around and analyze since you gotta let them soak for a while. Plenty of time to write up one reading," he explained with a bit of a nod as Tinka appeared.
"Thanks, Tinka," he smiled at the house elf...considering something. "Hey...you wanna join us? We could do a Pedomancy...Podomancy reading for you too maybe!" Because how often were you given the chance to work on a homework assignment with a house elf?!
Would just need...to figure out the casting situation.

Paul needed a pedicure! He had very well groomed feet, thank you very much, but he had not polished his toes in foreeeeeeever. Literal years. And soooo when Derfael very graciously asked him to join their little shindig, he of course accepted. it would be very relaxing, wouldn't it?
Three students, and elf, and a professor. What a party. Ha!
Professor Myers graced Hufflepuff with his presence, his deep blue robes (ahem, silk) billowing behind him as he entered the common room. No poncho, but looking quite regal as he took a seat. "Hello, all. Hello, Tinka," he bowed his head to the elf. He was a little confused though because Derfael had said a pedicure party and there were foot casts??? What ever FOR? He cleared his throat. "If you could explain what we're doing, Derfael?" he asked as he slipped off his loafer!slippers.

Mister Derf asked Tinka to join the party? What kind studentsies those Hufflepuffs be. She gave the fifth year a deep bow "Tinka stay and make nice toesies. Algamus say Tinka have night off. Tinka like pink the besties. Mister Derf can read Tinka feet. Yes, Miss Maddie and Miss Emmalyn too. Tinka feet like to play." Her very first pedicure party. She was so excited her big ears were shaking and she waved her whisk around, sending off sparkles of pink confetti floating through the air.
As the confetti drifted towards the floor, which she would happily clean up after the party, Professor Myers entered. "Professor Myers, sir. Hello, sir Professor Myers." Another bow was given to the head of house. What fun she was going to have.

There was his Head of House! And Derf had to pause for a moment to consider how genuinely pleased he was to see the man and without a feeling of hesitation or consideration that the man may be secretly plotting world domination and death. Perspective, the fifth year was slowly gaining it.
"Uh...well...Professor Vance had us make these foot casts in class 'cause she said it made reading feet easier...but reckon we could skip that step with you and Tinka. IT's sorta like palm reading...but with your feet" Since, well, they didn't have the materials for that. "But your feet gotta be clean first, so I figured go big or go home, you know?" Plopping down on the floor himself, the blonde slipped his own rooster toe socks and balled them up for safe keeping and smiled widely over at Tinka. "Didn't know Algamus was the boss," he considered. Or that house elves could decide for themselves when they had nights off and such. He had always reckoned that that was up to the Headmistress, though he wasn't going to question that considering the opportunity to read Tinka's feet was upon him! "Here, you can come share my bowl of water," he offered as he dipped his own feet into one side to soak.

Pedicure party in the common room for relaxation, house bonding, and divination homework? Isa was all in. Although she wasn’t the type to go for regular manicures and pedicures as it was far too easy to mess up nail polish or get dry skin on her hands with all of the work she did that required getting her hands dirty, she did regular nail trimming on both her hands and her feet. The sixth year girl waltzed into the common room wearing her flip flops, ready for the pedicure party with her housemates. Even Professor Myers was here! ”Hello everyone!” Her eyes glanced around the room, immediately settling on the chocolate chip cookies. Isa grabbed a cookie on her way by the snacks. ”Thanks for bringing snacks, Tinka!” Chocolate chip was her favorite! The house elves were the best. It probably helped that the common room was right by the kitchens.
Having grabbed a snack, Isa moved closer to the crowd where the pedicure supplies were being set up. ”Thanks for organizing this, Derf. So nice that you could make it, Professor Myers.” Today Isa had even brought some of her all natural lotions with essential oils in them and she was willing to share. ”Anyone want to try my lavender lotion?” You know what they should do next time? Make their own lotions or something. The real question though was what color to paint her toenails. Pink sounded like a nice color. ”Which shade of pink nail polish do you think would look best on me?” Isa looked to Maddie and Emmalyn for that question. As much as she loved Derf and Professor Myers, she didn’t trust them to pick good nail polish colors for her.
At the strange sound, Emmalyn looked over to see the tiny house elf appear with goodies!! "Hi, Tinka! Thanks for the snacks. Those look fantastic." She studied the tray of treats and saw one of her favorites, jam doughnuts, and she hoped they were raspberry filled. She then noted the chocolate chip cookies and thought of her time in the broom cupboard and how Tippin brought her warm cookies made by Schmoop when she was crying. The Hogwarts House Elves were so kind.
After grabbing a doughnut and taking a giant bite, she turned to Derf. Her eyes sparkled with a bit of mischief when he said she could paint his toenails and she wondered if she would be able to pull off drawing bludgers and a beaters bat on his toes.
"I guess I better get my feet soaking." She headed over to a bowl of water and plopped her feet in before setting her foot casts down and pulling out her notebook to start the project part of the party.
Before she could get going, Professor Myers arrived. "Hi Professor Myers. Come to have your feet checked out?" Perfect! Now they had enough Hufflepuff students, a professor, and a house elf to do readings on. Maybe that could get them some extra credit on their assignment.
With her feet soaking, Isa arrived and seemed to get herself settled in. "I think I like the slightly darker pink, but any of them would look nice on you. What do you think, Maddie?" Her eyes landed on Tinka and she smiled "I think this one matches your beautiful eyes, Tinka." She pointed to the pink polish of the matching color and wondered what the name of it was. Nail polish colors always seemed to have the strangest names.
Hiss!Roar!Growl!Caw! | Hermione's Double | The Little Three | Alecate
Emmalyn was the next to arrive. "It is!" she said, smiling and agreeing with what the slightly younger girl had said. It was neat. It was probably one of the funnest things she'd done this school year, aside from it being an actual assignment. What girl didn't love a pedicure party?! "You can paint a badger on a toenail?! That's awesome! I want one!"
In all her three years at Hogwarts, Maddie still hadn't gotten used to the POP that sounded when a house elf suddenly appeared. "Hi, Tinka!" she said. "Thanks for the snacks!" This party was awesome! There was pedicures, boys, snacks, and now house elves! Oh, yeah...and assignments to do. She saw the little elf look down at her own toes, and she was about to offer to have Tinka join them, when somebody else beat her to the punch. Maddie smiled at the thought of the elf getting her toes done. Elves didn't get to have much fun.
Whoooaaa! Their Head of House was joining them?! "Hello, Professor Myers!" she said. She kind of wondered who else would suddenly show up. Derf had really gone all out for this, hadn't he? Maddie turned her attention to Derf when he was asked to explain what this was all about. Of course Professor Myers wouldn't know what they were doing. It wasn't his assignment. He and Tinka were the only lucky ones who were here only for the fun of it. The rest of them had to throw in some schoolwork, too.
Maddie nodded when Isa offered up her lavender lotion. "I would!" she said. Pink polish! Painted badgers! Lavender lotion! This was SOOOO COOL. The third year followed Emmalyn's lead and started soaking her feet, but not before she grabbed a cookie or two. She peered over at Isa's selection of polish. "The darker pink is cool," she agreed, "but I really like that neon pink!" Maybe that would be the color she would choose!
"Algamus not like us not worksies but Algamus be silly right now." She shrugged her little elf shoulders with confusion. "He tell Tinka to take night off so Tinka do as she is told, like good house elf."
Tinka's eyes went wide at Mister Derf's suggestion to share his bowl of water. Her head shook in disbelief. "Mister Derf too kind to Tinka. Tinka get bowl for feet." With a quick snap of her fingers a little wooden bowl, filled with soap and water, appeared on the floor next to a small, Tinka sized, wooden stool. "Tinka clean feetsies here."
"Tinka like baksies, Miss Isa. Tinka like make studentsies treats." Smiling at the girls chatting about pink polish and snacking on the treats, Tinka looked again at all the colors. She also liked the pink. Not the neon pink, but the same pink that matched her eyes. She had never painted her toenails, or even considered painting them.
Wanting to get her other foot reading completed while her feet were soaking, Emmalyn held her notebook in hand and stared at her foot cast. The casts weren't that easy to read, at least not for her. It looked more like a strange creatures foot print than her own, but she flipped through her textbook and did her best at reading what was there.
SPOILER!!: notes
Name & House: Emmalyn Walsh Hufflepuff 2nd year
Chosen Foot (left/right?): right foot
Feet characteristics (cracked, swollen, flat etc?) and meanings: Common/Rome foot- social and outgoing, possibly arrogant. High arch- stubborn and unwilling to accept help, intellectual
Toe characteristics (round, crooked, big, small etc?) + meanings:Toes, round-sensitive and tactful. Big toe: Joy- stands apart from the other toes-may need time before letting people know my innermost thoughts and feelings, averaged sized big toe stands for generous and dependable. Second toe:shorter than big toe, average finances Middle toe: is for aggression, but it’s rounded so sensitive and tactful Fourth toe: attachment. Toe is short, energies are strained and difficult to express Little toe: Fear. Toe is bent towards big do, so looking back towards the past or hanging onto the past.
General thoughts on what your foot says about you and your personality (do you agree with what you’ve found or not?):I agree that I’m social and outgoing, generous and dependable, and take time to share with others. However,I would not say that I’m intellectual or arrogant. I feel like i ride more in the middle of most things. Oh, I am sensitive. Maybe a bit too sensitive.
With that part completed, she glanced around the room to see if anyone else was ready to share their casts for reading. "I'm ready to try and read another foot cast. Is anyone else ready to switch?" She wasn't sure if that was the best way to go about the assignment, but she felt the need to get things finished so she could paint her nails.

Reason: notes didn't copy over correctly
Errrr, this all seemed rather complicated for a pedicure! This wasn't Paul's first rodeo in that regard, either. "I'm not sure what color I want on my toes yet." But his feet were clean for this very occasion...the pedicure would just...DOUBLY clean them. "And I'd like for someone to read my fortune! Don't leave me ooouuuuuut!" he fake!whined and wiggled his toes. "Tell me what to do first!" he said to Derf. Summoning a cookie, he leaned back on his elbows and smiled at all of them in turn. Emmalyn...Isa...Derf...Maddie...Tinka...ahh. What a crew. He wondered where Hattie was at, and Bel, too. They'd enjoy this kind of thing.
Milton would, too.
And ah, the pains of missing a loved one hit him, and he would have to floo his head home later if he could manage it and had time for it.
Also, excuse YOU, Isa. Paul Myers was great at picking out colors THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Having finished her own second reading, and making sure her feet were clean and dry, she turned to the group "I'm ready to read some casts. Who want's to show me theirs? And, Professor Myers, I can do your reading first, if you would like." Not that she really understood how to do the reading, but she was going to try her hardest to do it correctly. She figured doing the reading directly from the foot might be a little easier than trying to determine what was imprinted in the foot casts they made.
She flipped her notebook to the next empty page and got her quill ready to take notes and do the readings. While she waited for a victim volunteer, she reached over and grabbed a somehow still warm chocolate chip cookie off the platter of treats. The gooey chocolate chips coated her tongue and put a look of pure pleasure on her face. "Tinka, these cookies are so good. Thank you again."
Hiss!Roar!Growl!Caw! | Hermione's Double | The Little Three | Alecate
She should probably get started, hmm? Maddie fumbled with her parchment and quill, eyed her foot cast, and then she turned to Emmalyn. "I'm about to do a reading on my left foot," she said, since she'd done the right foot in class already. "Then we can kind of swap up and do a reading on each other's feet?" It sounded kind of weird when she asked that out loud, which only confirmed that she was on the fence on how she felt about this. "Then after that, I want some pink toenails." She laughed a little before getting down to business.
She stared down at her foot, focusing first on the foot as a hole and not the toes just yet. She determined the type of foot she had, and then she looked at the surface of the bottom of her foot. YIKES. Was there supposed to be this many cracks on her heels? ... She stared at her heels a little longer and wrinkled her eyebrows inward. Then she started in on studying her toes. She decided to look at the first one and then two at the end.
Hmm...this was an odd reading.
Quote:
Foot reading number #: 1 Who are you doing the foot reading on: Myself Chosen Foot (left/right?): This time I'm reading the right foot, because I did a reading on my left foot in class. Feet characteristics (cracked, swollen, flat etc?) and meanings: Well, my right foot is also a "Flame or Greek Foot," which I guess makes sense, because it would look kind of weird if my two feet were exact opposites. So again, this type of foot means I get all fired up and excited about new ideas and motivate other people around me. It also means I'm very athletic, which was the same reading I got for my left foot. Wouldn't it be kind of weird if I was athletic in one foot but not the other! I also notice that the heels of this foot are a bit more cracked than the heels of the left foot. This could just be because I use this foot more often, but it also could mean that I'm pulled in many different directions. I am really, really energetic, and I never stop! Toe characteristics (round, crooked, big, small etc?) + meanings:
- First toe: My first toe is rounded at the top. This means that I'm sensitive and tactful. Or, it's supposed to mean that. I don't think I'm overly sensitive at all!
- Fourth toe: I noticed it's pretty wide at the top. I think this falls within the "large toe" category, which means attachment and love in some part of my life has been made to seem more than what it really is. SOOOO not sure where that is coming from! I don't even have a boyfriend!
- Fifth toe: This toe sort of curves under the toe before it. I read this means I have little faith in myself and find it hard to let go. Hmm...that's not true about me at all! General reflections on what your foot says about your personality or your peers/staffers: I kind of feel like some of these readings are too random. A lot of them don't relate to me at all. I definitely do get fired up and excited about new ideas, and I am pretty athletic and move from one thing to another pretty often. My toe readings seem way off, though! I'm not overly sensitive, It isn't hard for me to let go, and I definitely don't have anything going on in my love life! O_O.
She read over her work, and then turned to Emmalyn with a smile. "All done!" she said. Well, with the first of the four readings, that is. She could take care of looking over one of Emmalyn's feet next, and then she was all about some pink nail polish!
