It was time for another Care of Magical creatures lesson. The weather was actually quiet lovely this afternoon. It wasn't too cold or too hot. Sometimes the Professor wished the weather was like this all year. It would definitely make things easier for him.
As usual, just outside the large barn, Professor Wayland had set up the semi-circle of hay bales for students to sit on and his trusty blackboard was at the front close to the barn, with no creature insight other than his Phoenix, Ash, resting on the roof of the barn. It was definitely going to be a good lesson, he thought as he sipped his mug of Chai tea from his recliner shaped hay bale chair. He patiently waited for students to arrive.

Lessons where school robes were a non-requirement had to be up there with Felicity's favourites. Combine that with Care of Magical Creatures, the top choice she was interested in studying at university next year, and she was definitely in a pretty good mood. The lightened load that Valko's study timetable had given her had definitely helped, as had getting her first university acceptance letter and the subsequent kiss that she was trying desperately hard not to over-analyse, and so she'd been spending time with her Aethonan before the lesson.
Her pockets a few apples lighter than they had been when she left the Castle, Felicity drew her coat closer around her and approached the hay bales, taking a seat on one in the middle. "Hi, Professor," she said softly, a small smile on her face - no need for her to be much louder, considering she was the first person to arrive.

Nettie had been looking forward to Creatures class the MOST when she had first come to Hogwarts - and she had NOT been disappointed! So far this term every lesson had been enlightening and pretty much exactly what she had been hoping for.
As she approached the class, she smiled happily at the professor and took her seat. "Hello Professor!" she piped up, smiling and nodding at the phoenix as well as she took her place with the rest of the students and gathered her materials.

Breathing in the fresh spring like air, Emmalyn made her way down to class with a skip in her step. She loved outside classes and she just knew it was going to be a great one. As she approached, a smile spread across her face at the sight of Professor Wayland sitting in his hay bale chair.
"Good afternoon, Professor Wayland. It's a beautiful day, isn't it? I trust you are well." She made her greeting then worked her way over to the far side of the hay bale semi-circle and took a seat. After getting settled, she closed her eyes and took in the smells all around her. The earthy richness of the ground mixed with last seasons hay sent pictures of her grandmothers farm streaming though her mind.

Kirk arrived for his next lesson. It really was nice out today given the Spring season and he could dress even more comfortably than usual. His hair had grown longer than usual as it was kept into a small ponytail. He wondered what would be the topic today.
As Kirk approached the familiar semi-circle of hay bales, he decided on sitting a few seats over from the Professor, "Hello Professor. Nice day, isn't it?" he also somewhat acknowledged the Phoenix as well. Oh lookie, one of his teammates was there with some other. They were cool enough to get a small smile from him.

Professor Wayland was disturbingly attached to his hay bales, which was funny considering they weren't very comfortable. Maybe they could consider adding a nice soft throw, or some pillows... But maybe class wasn't supposed to be comfortable.
"Good day to you, Professor. Can I say hi to Ash?"

this is probably the best season tp learn about magical creatures. For some reason Caleb relates weather when learning his subjects at Hogwarts. Like for example, he enjoys Potions during the winter and Divination during Fall. It is weird but he learns a lot faster that way. He walked to class, entering as he eyed the classroom. "Good day, Professor" smiling as he greeted his teacher.
He made his way to find a seat. So many hay bales around. Will they be learning about horses, perhaps? Or something of the like.

COMC was a fun class and Chloe enjoyed the animals, the other great part was there weren't many spells to learn so she didn't have to feel dumb when they didn't work right away. All smiles she headed to the barn and found the usual seating.
"Hello Professor" a cheerful smile and wave came from the now twelve year old before she looked around.
Oooooohhh older claws!
They got waves and she went to sit near older Chloe, hoping she didn't mind.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy made her way to the usual location of the lesson, dressed in a pair of jeans, a long-sleeved shirt and a hooded jacket. "Hello, Professor!" Daisy greeted with a grin as she sat down on a hay bale next to Emmalyn.

The semi-disastrous Creature Companions’ activity months ago could have affected Stasya’s attraction to the subject of CoMC, yet it hadn’t. As it was, the tall blonde still spent quite a bit of whatever free time she had that wasn’t taken up by prefecting out in the barns with all the creatures that weren’t grindylows that wanted to eat her and her friends. It didn’t hurt that she had ideas as to how she might acquire a winged horse of her own so she wouldn’t have to keep bothering Henry when he was home to help out with Caelus. (Okay, it might have involved asking the former Head Boy to send a recommendation.) Very little could affect her love of creatures.
The fact it was another lesson that didn’t require their uniforms helped, as she headed out to the barns wearing her now-usual jeans, boots and pink jumper, her prefect badge pinned to her school bag to make it easier to hide if they were working around nifflers or any other creatures attracted by shiny things.
The sight of the professor on his hay bale recliner only put a grin on her face. That was another expected thing. The haybales, anyway, although the chair configuration had changed nearly every lesson. “Good afternoon, Professor Wayland,” she said, heading to an open haybale to settle on. Plus… “Hi Ash!,” she added, giving a smile and a little nod toward the phoenix perched on the roof. She doubted they’d be learning about phoenixes again, but she hadn’t seen any obvious hints as to what they were going to be discussing, either.

Yaaawwwwnnnn.
She’d slept through her earlier lessons and had considered sleeping through this one too but by the time she’d ended the mental debate, her brain had fully woken up and she was suddenly in need of something to do. Sure, she could’ve found something else to do but with most of her studies slipping into a slower pace, they wouldn’t have kept her occupied for long.
“Hello Professor.” She greeted, suppressing another yawn as she took a seat on one of the bales of hay. Her hand rubbed away at her eye, trying to dislodge the last of the sleepiness. You’d think that with her mind now up and active this would be easy but the restlessness was its own and remained separate. As you could imagine, it left a rather odd feeling stirring around inside her. One she wasn’t sure she’d be able to explain even if she tried.
A glance was spared at Ash. Still fully feather. Still not burning.
The thought reminded her of the time she’d asked the Professor if she could watch Ash burn. It hadn’t gone over well.

Now that Skylar had made the decision against pursuing creatures healing and magizoology studies in university, having withdrawn her application from the couple universities she hadn't heard rejections from in those programs, attending creatures lessons seemed almost like a reprieve. It was something she could do to enjoy without the pressure that it would negatively impact her future.
Something else. While NORMALLY in the past, Skylar would have been annoyed by the fact Wayland's haybale was made higher than the rest of theirs, this was something that Skylar had been working on to improve of herself. So with a small nod toward the Professor, and a quiet "hello", she went to have a seat.
And didn't even stack the haybales. She was trying. Really, she was. Trying to do what, well, she'll let you know. Or probably not, because she was still figuring it out.

That was indeed a lovely afternoon and that got Anna wishing there were no lessons to attend so she could enjoy the weather outside.
The thing that helped her mood, however, was that THIS particular lesson was held outside, so at least that was a good thing. And creatures were kind of cool too - a lot more fun than boring History of Magic, at least.
"Hey, professor!" The girl greeted the man when she arrived. Looking around, she decided where she would sit that day and headed that way.
As soon as he'd seen the announcement for the next Care of Magical Creatures class, Daehyun had been excited. Dragon hide gloves and no robes? Clearly it involved something more dangerous and thrilling. Why, yes, he was ready.
He's always been one for colder weather, but he enjoyed the warmth on his pale skin as he made his way to the barn, happily comfortable in his worn sneakers, and his hands stuck in the pockets of his hoodie. "Hello, professor!" he smiled at professor Wayland as soon as he'd spotted the man, sitting down on a hay bale on one far end of the semi-circle.
It was only when he'd dropped his bag by his feet that he'd noticed the phoenix on the roof of the barn, and he couldn't help but stare in awe. Ah, how much he wanted one of his own.

With what felt like the rest of his life hanging in the balance, Derf was always glad when Care of Magical Creatures lessons rolled around. It was his constant and one of the few things that seemed to be strong enough glue holding him together* Being a teenager...was really hard. REALLY hard. And despite his pinky promise with Stephanie that they would navigate and get through it together...Derf was starting to wonder if that were true. Which was terribly dramatic considering what perils he had survived at Hogwarts since his first year - the most recent being that grindylow bite and the dagger eyes of the Headmistress - but being fifteen may very well be the death of him.
Good thing sixteen was right around the corner? Ish?
"Hiya, Professor Wayland," Derf greeted with his usual cheer as he quickly gave the area a look over and went to plop his bum down on one of the hay bales...until he saw Ash that was. "Good day to you too, Ash!" he greeted the phoenix...with a bit more gusto than he had the professor. Sorry, sir. Bit of a bias here. Once you were able to produce healing tears, fly, carry insanely large loads, and be reborn from fire...then, well, you know.
Surely Ash was a hint as to what today's lesson would be about, yes? YES?!

He had left the castle later than planned. Having gotten waylaid up in the common room between classes. So Septimus might have been in a little bit of a rush as he walked across the grounds to the creatures barn, hoping he wouldn’t be late in the process. The professor was nice, but the second year didn’t dare get in trouble with any professor just for bad time management. Fortunately for him, it appeared as if they were still gathering just now so he was safe.
“Good day, Professor Wayland,” he greeted the man as he made his way to an open spot on the haybale half-circle. The professor's phoenix quite noticable upon the roof of the barn.

He also paused to remember what the question was; he was overly excited for today's creature!! Plus, he wanted to make sure he had every eye on him before asking. "What creatures, preferably magical, live in water? Please, only one per student, and also give me one fact that you know about the creature you chose to share with us." He paced around in front of the class waiting for students hands to shoot up in the air.

Happy to have Daisy sitting next to her, Emmalyn gave her friend a little wave as she sat next to her. Just as she was about to say hi, class started and she began thinking of her favorite water creatures. There were so many creatures that lived in the water. Most of which seemed like they could really hurt a person. However, there were a few she knew about that didn't seem so scary.
It didn't take her long to raise her hand. "Sir, I really like the flying seahorse. It's not at all scary to me, like some of the other creatures, and it can really fly if provoked. I also like that they are yellow. I really like yellow." After a short pause, she continued. "Sorry, I guess that was two things. Although, the color doesn't seem to be too important of a feature. At least I don't think it is?"
She hoped Professor Wayland wouldn't be upset with her for maybe giving two features about the flying seahorses. She hadn't meant to disregard the instructions.

Chloe waved cheerfully to Ash, and she wasn't in the least upset that he wasn't feeling friendly. Honestly, if she occasionally burst into flames, how friendly would she be feeling?? She blew a few kisses for good measure before giving Little Chloe a hug as she sat down next to her.
Oh, water creatures! "Kelpies!" Chloe's hand shot up into the air. "Sir. I like kelpies. They're sort of like horses, but in the water. The Loch Ness has a particularly good one."

So if Wayland could read minds, he didn't show it, which Skylar was content with because while she liked the Creatures Professor well enough, she really did not want to go into details about her lack of arguing about the seats today. So she'd just leave him be content that she didn't complain.
Creatures that live in water. Which had her wonder; why were they not instructed to wear swimwear? Did she miss a memo about today's lesson? No, no, she was almost positive she didn't.
As far as the creature for her to name; "Merpeople! And they're unique cause they are capable of human speech."

Daehyun had deflated in exactly 0.2 seconds upon hearing about water creatures. Because he remembered. All too well. The reason he avoided large bodies of water like the plague. Unconsciously, his hand moved down to his foot as if to check if the wound was still there, but of course there was no trace of it left. Healer Macmillan always did wonders, not even a scar was left behind as a reminder, only his horrific memories.
Professor Wayland could even offer extra credit, but there was no way Daehyun was going in the lake again, if that was what the class was all about.
Nevertheless, he raised his hand. "Grindylows... violent water demons, known to have been tamed only by merpeople." Commonly known as his most absolute favourite water creatures.
Not.

Had she known the Professor held some form of concern over her current state, she may have fed him the same line she’d fed everyone else; she was fine. It was the easiest and most convenient answer. More often than not, it was enough to prevent further questions.
“The giant squid, that talks but won’t answer the simple question of whether it’s a natural ability or magical tampering lives, in water—I assume. I can only assume, you see, because I still don’t know if he’s an anomaly. What if his particular species actually lives on land? What if he’s not a specie at all but fit regularly into another category that did indeed live in water.”
Did he see where she was going with this?
Was she still a little bitter at the way the creature had basically snubbed her? Maybe.
The young girl sat forward on her hay bale, bouncing her feet restlessly. It was both another attempt to wake herself up, and a result of actual restlessness setting in. Today may have been a day to sleep in after all. Hardly through the first lesson and she could already tell it would be a long day.

Ash was acting...strange. Just a little off and for a brief moment Derf wondered if that affectionate tune the phoenix was in fact a phoenix's song. Or maybe he just HOPED it was and that desire to hear said song made him want to believe he was becoming braver. You know, the mind could be easily tricked to believe things. Still, the fifth year's eyes were trained on the phoenix as it took on a...defensive sort of perch? He tried to follow the crimson bird's gaze to see just WHERE it may be looking out to...but it was hard to tell given the location of the classroom. Though...not in the direction of the castle so...the Forbidden Forest? The Black Lake?
Water dwelling creatures. Black lake. Oh hello, class was starting and, naturally, his hand went up.
"Hippocampus! Like the one we saw the merpeople struggling with before the......er......treasure cave incident," he offered up, his hand sliding into his pocket where the coin he had kept from that day was still safely tucked away.

Rylee was always excited for a CoMC lesson and she was always early for them too. Today hadn't been any different in that matter, with her bright smile and comfortable clothing, jeans a much to large hoodie and her trusty sneakers with the purple laces, she was sitting on one of the many haybales. Her little feet were tapping on the ground in her excitement for the lesson to begin.
Finally after what seemed like forever for her Wayland got to his feet and started the lesson. Only her smile slipped slightly at the talk of water creatures. Right away her mind went to Grindylows causing her to cringe slightly. Trying her best to shake off the memories of that day months earlier she pushed her thoughts in a different direction as she raised her hand to give an answer, "The Plimpy is a pretty harmless one that live in deep lakes." They were considered to be a nuisance by some but at least they wouldn't try to kill you.
