Snow began falling once again not long before breakfast and, by the time everyone needed to head off to class, the snow was still gracefully falling. Whether or not you wanted to venture off outside of the school and play in it, one of the first classes of the day was keeping you indoors as today's Ancient Runes lesson was taking place in its usual setting: in its designated classroom on the fifth floor. Better get there quick so you don't have to linger in the drafty corridor for too long or, even worse, end up being late to class.
Once inside the warm room, you notice that the desks are not in their usual places. Rather than being in straight rows, they are set up in a large horseshoe-like fashion. There are no clear-cut clues whatsoever to help you infer the reasoning behind the arrangement. However, scattered in the middle of the horseshoe, there are five small tables. That is, perhaps, the more perplexing thing about today's setup for every table has something on it, each of varying shapes and sizes, covered by a white sheet. Will your curiosity get the better of you?
Though you may want to sneak a peek at what is underneath the sheets as you make your way to a desk, you are unable to do so without being caught. Headmistress Hawthorne is clearly visible in the front of the room and watches with a small smile on her face as you and your classmates arrive.
OOC: My apologies for the late start; I was having some internet issues the other day. Without further ado, let's get this party started! ... Take note that this is NOT the first Ancient Runes lesson your character has had with the headmistress this term. Also, please familiarize yourself with the classroom rules before posting. The lesson has started, but feel free to jump in at any time!
XD I wish I was playing a charrie that knew about runes cos its in MY wheelhouse lmao

Nothing about this class was in Bel's wheelhouse, but she'd quietly been trying to struggle through, doing her best, writing and rewriting notes, scribbling out here and there when she was wrong, doodling question marks when she wasn't sure. But listening, you know? It was just tough, this stuff. She listened as kids answered the current round of questions and wished she could contribute to the discussion somehow but... she just couldn't wrap her head around any of it. And Max was so smart, and so excited about it all.... Sigh. Bel just continued writing down notes and listening very attentively to the other kids.

Beth’s eyes widened happily as she saw the bind runes on the board. Her hunch had been right on for the golden pendant! That was, soooooo brilliant, and Quinn seemed to really get the class. That was nice looking around she watched as her classmates answered before glancing at her own notes.
”Professor, with the hinge strap, Thurisaz is an active defensive force while Isa is primal in nature, so active primal defense. It could either keep the strap closed as Emmlyn suggested or, more than that” she paused looking at it, ”it could be a way to block the primal form from being revealed, like…if the wearer were a werewolf it could stop or prevent them from revealing their primal form” she suggested with a grin, because really, no one would want to transform right?...blocking a transformation could be a good bet.
Max’s idea made her grin of course about the pirates. That was great, -- wait…then it hit her, the idea like a boat thrust into a storm. The pendant, Hgalaz was about letting go of the past and life changes…it made sense truly. ”Professor,” she asked again, hand already ready to be called on – ”if these were all one person’s belongings…should we consider the fact that all of the meanings need to be revealed – the pendant for example could be about travel and…maybe someone was resettling in the area? Letting go of their past and changing their life – while simultaneously stopping some…primal force if they also wore the hinge strap” guys, like think about it…there weren’t many items, they could have all belonged to one person.

And so the theories were made. While those who eventually spoke up said what they had to say, Regina kept the same expression on her face. To be totally honest she would have liked for more of the class to speak up, but, alas, she had to work with what she could get.
Quinn's answer about the arm ring did cause the simple smile on her face to grow a bit and earned the girl a nod of her head. "Very good." It was, more or less, the same thoughts she had about that particular bind rune. That it was meant to provide the wearer with the strength to protect his homeland.
As for Maxton's respond about the bind rune on the gold pendant, it made her wonder if he was stuck a bit too much on the Viking pirate bit he was talking about. He was onto something by mentioning Eihwaz having something to do with immortality and Hagalaz removing unwanted influences though.
The headmistress did like Septimus' thinking about the peninsular brooch. "I think you're onto something here." There just needed a more figurative meaning behind Raidho.
Ronan was the next to speak, and she did get his thinking when it came to taking the Algiz (protection) and Uruz (strength) runs into consideration. Though Othala was part of the bind rune too, and that shifted the focus of what needed protection and strength.
When Emmalynn gave her response about the hinge strap, the headmistress couldn't help but nod her head. Again, this was along the lines of what she was thinking for the bind rune as well. The strap itself was literally kept something from being opened; and it was figuratively keeping a destructive force at bay. "Or maybe," she suggested, unable to help herself, "the hinge strap was meant to keep some source of destruction from getting out."
Stasya's piggybacking stemming from Septimus' answer caused the professor to nod her head. "I agree with you there. The wearer of this particular brooch wore this likely to invoke energies that would aid them in gaining wealth throughout their time in some sort of leadership position." As for the question the Gryffindor asked, Regina replied, "In this bind rune, Raidho is mirrored but still remains upright. Likely done just for decorative purposes. If it were reversed, meaning it'd be a merstave, then there would be a negative connotation."
There was a bit of a lull in conversation, since there were a number of students being awfully quiet for a change. But then Maddie broke that silence, bringing the discussion back to the gold pendant. "I like what you said about that bind rune," she said with a nod. "That it possibly was worn by someone who was going through some type of change in their life or moving away. That could be taken literally or figuratively."
Anabeth was the last to speak up, and it made the headmistress raise her brow. At least the first bit about preventing a werewolf from taking form. "I don't think the bind rune would present that from happened. After all, there is no known cure for lycanthropy; a werewolf cannot choose whether or not they transform every month. The only known way to relieve the symptoms is the Wolfsbane Potion." As for the girl's theory on all of the items belonging to someone and they were all used at once, the headmistress let out a soft hum. "It is a possibility. But we cannot say for certain. Also, remember, these are just five items that are being used in today's lesson. There were definitely more than just these items we pulled from the lake."
Since the discussion part of class seemed to have died down, Regina took the opportunity to use the silence as her cue to move on to the final stage of the lesson she had planned. "Now, we cannot say for certain what the purpose of these bind runes are. We are missing a lot of context and don't have all of the answers about these items, such as where they came from or who was in possession of them. Such is the downfall sometimes when dealing with history. We can only theorize at this point until we get more information to further shape our thinking. So I thank you those of you who shared your thoughts in our discussion."
"To bring today's lesson to close, I would like for you to take out a spare piece of parchment and write your name on it," she continued with a smile. There was a brief pause for everyone to get their materials out and their names written down. "As I stated earlier, we could wrap up by applying our learning in a creative way. To do this, I would like for each of you to independently create your own bind rune. After, label the runes that make up the bind rune and then write a brief description on the purpose of the bind rune, or how and why you would use the bind rune you made. When you are finished, you can turn your work in to me and then you will be free to go."
OOC: Direct mentions for the students who did speak up. For those that didn't, know that Regina saw them; she just obviously can't read their minds. =P
We will be wrapping up this lesson with a mini-activity. Regina asked everyone to create their own bind rune, label the different runes in the bind rune, and then write a few sentences about the purpose of the bind rune (how/why they would use it). Feel free to get creative as you like with this! (Note: Please do NOT use the bind runes in the Runic Charms chapter from the textbook. Thanks!)
Quinn knew exactly what purpose she wanted to make the bind rune for the moment Professor Hawthorne stated what the final activity of the lesson was. In a flash, she had a new sheet of parchment in front of her, name scrawled in the top corner in scarlet ink, and was flipping through her text book already in search of the right runes.
Not even a trivial thing like not knowing the runes well enough to pick the right ones out seemed to slow her down. She was already starting to scribble down every possible rune that might work on her parchment.

Quinn set her quill down for a moment, studying the runes she'd noted on her parchment. Now it was time to narrow down and select the right set of runes to use. Although, she'd already ruled one, wunjo, for being temporary, and marked another, Eihwaz, to use as it was perfect for one part of her bind rune purpose. The rest didn't seem like they'd be as easy to narrow down. She picked up her quill again, dipped it in ink and started to figure out which to use and which to drop.
For a long while, Quinn just stared down at her parchment, finding it hard to pick which to cross out. Finally she settled on the opposite approach to start: underlining the ones that seemed like they'd work best.

She hesitated, quill hovering over Kenaz. It felt necessary, but was it? Did pointing out this was meant for a solution to her long standing issue with her parents and home needed with all the other positive life changes the other invoked? But a positive life change didn't necessary suggest solution to a problem either.
With a sigh, Quinn underlined Kenaz as well, and crossed out the rest. They were redundant in some way to what she'd underlined.

Now, Quinn had five runes. Was there a limit on how many could be used? Were fewer better? She poured over her parchment again, looking to see if any were in fact redundant or unnecessary. The bind rune's purpose was to ensure she would, in fact, be leaving her neglectful birth parents for new, more caring parents, the Moons. That everything would work out and she'd be adopted by them and it scared her how much she really wanted this, and pained her when she got worried it might not happen. So, Eihwaz was definitely needed. It represented her fear and uncertainty of the change, which would work out well in the end. So Eihwaz, definitely.
Berkana represented a fresh, new start in life, AKA being adopted by the Moons, after her long standing domestic issues: her neglectful parents and the lack of emotional support, and nurturing relationship with them, while also possibly hinting at the emotional support and nurturing relationship she already seemed to be developing with the Moons. So, Eihwaz and Berkana were needed. Also, given that the Moons were a solution to her long-standing issues with her birth parents, Kenaz felt needed too. Berkana and Kenaz seemed to be the two sides of the same coin, both felt necessary to complete the picture to her.
So, Eihwaz, Berkana and Kenaz. And this whole thing was about family, and finally finding her home and "becoming rich with family and home" through the Moons. So Othala too.
Ansuz represented Imogen Greyvson, who set it all in motion. But that already happened, so even though it was a necessary piece of the puzzle, it had happened, so was it needed for the bind rune? She wouldn't be invoking it to happen, just referencing it did happen.
Okay, so, looks like her bind rune will have 5 runes. Hopefully that would be okay. Now where to start? This was about family, so Othala maybe? But more to the point, she felt the bind rune she was making was calm her doubt and uncertainty and give her faith this would all work out. So, in that purpose, Eihwaz was the key ingredient. Quinn drew a nice sized Eihwaz on her parchment. This would be the center. Next she added Berkana to it, for the new start, followed by Kenaz. Next she added Ansuz, but flipped backwards. Finally she capped it all off with Othala, representing family. She saved othala for last, as it felt right bookending the bind rune with the main focuses of the purpose: Her anxiety and family.
That finished, and somewhat decent, hopefully, Quinn moved on to writing the description for the purpose of the bind rune.

This bind rune is made to help me overcome my fears and doubts that my potential emancipation from my parents and adoption this summer by the Moons will fall through. It is also to help assure this will happen. The bind rune is comprised of Eihwaz at it's center, representing a positive and necessary change, but also my doubt and uncertainty regarding it. Over that I placed Berkana, representing the new start away from my old family issues and lack of nurturing and emotional support, into a new family that seems full of both. Next I placed Kenaz, opposite of Berkana, reflecting the fact this is a solution to a very long standing problem. Next I flipped Ansuz and placed it backwards over both Eihwaz and Kenaz, and representing Beth's Mum, who has been a sort of mother figure for me and who put all this in motion. She is key to everything and so I felt Ansuz was necessary. And finally I crowned it with Othala, representing my new family and home if all goes well.
And that's my bind rune.
Quietly thankful only Professor Hawthorne would be seeing this, Quinn gave it one last check and then packed her things. When she was done, she stood up, slung her bag over her shoulder and brought her assignment up to the Headmistress. "It was a very interesting class, Professor," she said as she handed the parchment to Professor Hawthorne. "Thank you."
Finished, Quinn made her way out of the classroom.
To keep something in? Her eyes widened at the thought of what could have been held inside that would need a bind rune to keep it in. She shuddered and goose bumps slowly covered her arms. She hadn’t thought of it that way.
She pulled her parchment out and wrote her name at the top. It was time for her to create her own bind rune. She quickly flipped through her book to pick out the runes to be used. It would need to have meaning, not just simply be two or three of her favorites crammed together. She also wondered if she would need an object for the bind rune to be associated with. All of the bind runes they had talked about in class were attached to an object.

My bind rune.
Uruz: Strengthens will, increases energy: for hunting
Gebo: To bring luck
Sowlo: Energy, strength, and success
I would place this bind rune on my broom to help with quidditch. It would bring me good luck, increased speed and energy, help with winning (success), and help in hunting out the quaffle or snitch in order to score points. I don't think I would actually place a bind rune like this on my broom because it wouldn't be fair to the other players or team. I also feel it would be cheating and I don't think that anyone should be cheating or given an unfair advantage in the game. Therefore, I should have picked a different bind rune to create so that I might some day use it instead of writing down reasons why I should not use it.
That was a mess. As soon as she finished writing the last line on her parchment, she immediately regretted even starting the paper. There wasn't enough time left in class for her to start over, so her assignment would need to be turned in as is. That was when she realized she should have created a bind rune on her paper to help it earn top marks.
After collecting her things, she proceeded to hand in her assignment. "Thank you for the class, Headmistress. It was very interesting. Although, I do believe I might be having nightmares thinking about what could have once been held inside by that strap, if that's what the bind rune was doing. I guess we will never know."
She gave a quick, nervous smile, turned, and headed out the door. It was time to get back to studying and attempting to catch up in all of her classes.

THURISAZ - ᚦ - Aid in study and meditation
KENAZ - < - Dispelling anxiety and fear.
DAGAZ - ᛞ - To bring a positive outcome.
I chose three runes to make up my bind runes. I picked these particular runes with my upcoming OWLs in mind.
I think a combination of all three of these runes would help keep me calm and focused during all the revision and studying. I get anxious a lot, so having a rune like Kenaz would definitely be helpful for me. I also added Dagaz because a positive outcome would be super handy too.
Happy with his work, Max slung on his rucksack and approached the professor to hand in his parchment. "Thanks, Miss... I hope you have an awesome day."

Kye had been made to feel so exhausted by figuring out the last bind rune, that she hadn't even realized she didn't speak up. Kenaz – < divine inspiration.
Wunjo - ᚹ goal achievement, success.
Naudhiz - ᚾ A need to be filled, necessity.
I think that these three would make a simple yet strong bind rune to help keep me on track with short and long term goals, especially with graduation and NEWTs this year.
Hmm... The Headmistress had asked for a few sentences, but Kye didn’t feel like hers really need an unnecessarily lengthy explanation. She sat there looking it over, but nothing else was coming to mind. She handed her parchment in, and smiled, slightly sheepishly, at the professor, “Thank you, Headmistress, have a good day.” She pulled her bag up onto her shoulder and headed out of the classroom. *Sigh*
The first thing Lydia noticed upon entering the Ancient Runes classroom was the unusual arrangement of the desks. Next she noticed several tables. White cloths covered hidden objects on the tables. Hmm, this should prove to be an interesting lesson. Lydia nodded at the Headmistress as she took a seat in the horseshoe. She'd almost been late, but she made it with just a moment to spare.
She hadn't gotten much sleep the previous night so Lydia's attention was worse than usual. As the lesson progressed, she vaguely realized Professor Hawthorne was going on about bind runes. Hmm, had they studied those yet?
Lydia's attention perked up when the headmistress revealed what was underneath the cloths. The items from the lake! And they had bind runes on them? How interesting. No, they couldn't take the items away! Surely there were professors right here at Hogwarts who could study the treasures. Lydia studied the items on the tables. Earlier Professor Hawthorne had written some more information on bind runes on the blackboard, but it was pretty technical, and Lydia had found her eyes glazing over. Studying these items would be much more interesting!
Deciding to work alone, Lydia stepped up to the items, quill and parchment in hand. She decided to work on the pendant and the arm ring. Lydia spent several minutes just copying the shapes of the runes down on her parchment. Finally it was time to analyze the runes themselves.

Viking Arm Ring
-Uruz for sure. That's the second part of the rune. Uruz represents physical power. It makes sense to be included on an arm ring. This was probably the arm ring of a great Viking warrior!
-Othala maybe? This is in the middle of the rune. It represents home and land. It can strengthen family ties. Hmm, I'm not sure if this is right or not.
-Algiz definitely. It represents protection which fits right in with Uruz and the idea of this arm ring belonging to a warrior!
Gold Pendant
-Ansuz maybe? Represents an authority figure like Odin. Maybe this pendant belonged to a leader.
-Hagalaz. Represents loss and devastation. Hmm, this wouldn't be a very lucky pendant to carry around then, would it? But it can also mean rebirth so maybe.
When it was time to move on, Lydia watched with anticipation as Professor Hawthorne changed the board. Hopefully she got at least some of the runes correct! Lydia felt a glow of pleasure as she realized that she'd gotten all 3 of the arm ring runes correct. And that one had been very challenging! She got one of the runes wrong on the pendant though, but that was all right. Practice made perfect and all that.
Lydia listened to Professor Hawthorne's second question. Giving her answer much thought, she slowly raised her hand into the air. She chose to talk about the arm ring, since she got all those runes correct.
"I believe the wearer of the arm ring was a Viking warrior. He inscribed upon it runes of protection and defence. That makes sense when you're fighting for your life, doesn't it? You want something to protect you! The rune Uruz also increases the wearer's physical power. And Othala means land or home so maybe he was fighting for his home."
Had Quinn already mentioned that? Ah well, too late now. At least they'd come to the same conclusion. Great minds think alike! The Headmistress was speaking again. Lydia perked her ears up. Ah, so now they got to make their own bind rune. Brilliant.
Flipping through the textbook, Lydia spent several minutes mulling over the many runes. She wondered if their runes had to be associated with an object. That made sense. Runes weren't much use when they weren't inscribed upon something, were they? Thinking of her violin, Lydia began scribbling furiously on a fresh piece of parchment:
SPOILER!!: Lydia's Mini-Activity
Name: Lydia Beckett Year: 1st House: Slytherin
My Bind Rune
Ansuz - For wise decisions, success, leadership.
Kenaz - For creative inspiration.
Purpose / Meaning
I would inscribe this bind rune onto my violin to bring myself creativity, inspiration, and success. Ansuz can reference a highly creative person. One of its magical uses is to bring success. Kenaz is a rune of creativity and inspiration. It is used for enlightenment and clarity. Together these runes should combine to bring about successful creation.
Satisfied with her work, Lydia turned in her parchment to the Headmistress.
To start with Juniper started out of brooch and the gold perpant. Those were her goals anyway just get the two out of the way. First she copied the bind rune down on her parchment. Then she listed off the runes that she found on the brooch, there were three of them: Gebo, Uruz and Wunjo. She quickly wrote down their meanings as well. If anyone for whatever reason were to ask her what her favorite rune was she would have to say that it was Wunjo. Because it was pretty much all of the things that she ever wanted.
Next she looked over the golden pendant. This one had two runes in it, Eihwaz and Hagalaz. Which made things on this item seem very grim and sad. Especially when compared to the first one. She looked up and noticed that many of the others were still working. So she decided to go on and analyze another item while she had some time to do so.
Why not go for the other brooch? Because why not? She took a look and found the bind rune according to the board this one also had three runes first she drew the bind rune out on the piece of parchment. Then she identified the three runes: Ansuz, Fehu, and Raidho. This one seemed to be a bit more cheerful than the last to there was that.
Ansuz: Authority figure, leader, mind & body balance, justice, shaman, clairvoyant.
Fehu: Prosperity, money, wealth, concern with physical and financial needs, goals, promotion, self-esteem, centeredness, karma.
Raidho: Journey, pilgrimage, new experience, life lessons
Now they had to explain the reasoning of why this bind rune was put on the item. She could come up with some pretty interesting ideas for the some of the items. She listened and considered some of the others ideas and such. But when she had fully completed a thought of her own she raised her hand. ”Professor I believe that the little brooch was a gift since Gebo means gift. I think that maybe it could have been given as a gift for some sort of graduation, Since Uruz is a meaning rite of passage. For achievement of goals, fortune, and success in the next steps that represent Wunjo .” That probably seemed just a bit of a generic answer but she did like the idea of it.
So now they were going to get to make their own bind rune. Well this lesson just got a hundred times better. It was kind of too bad this was the last thing they would get to do in the lesson today. She got out her parchment wrote down on it.
Then she flipped through the textbook to figure out which runes she was going to use in her bind rune. After reading through the meanings she ended up picking out four instead of three as she had originally planned but that was alright she supposed.
Quote:

KENAZ GEBO, WUNJO, SOWILO
Gebo: To bring luck
KENAZ knowledge and intellect, clarity of thought
SOWILO guidance, goal setting and success. Life purpose
WUNJO perfection, accomplishment, prosperity
I would use this bind rune for luck as I study for the OWLs. Gebo for luck of course. Kenaz for the knowledge and using my intellect to do well on the exams and to give me clarity of thought. Sowilo for guidance and setting goals for me to meet as a study. And of course the success of doing well on the OWLs. And for life purpose because that’s what the owls help you do figure out what your career could be. Wunjo because its a good Rune for positivity, accomplishment and prosperity. Everything here I feel like would help in studying and taking the OWLs.
She read over it a few times, made a few changes here and there. But once she was happy with it. She packed up her things. ”Thank You Professor. Have a great rest of the day.” Went on to hand her work and leave after the lesson was over with.

Ohh, they were going to get to create their very own bind rune now?! Somehow, that seemed a lot easier than interpreting one that was already made. Maddie took out a fresh piece of parchment and started by writing the most obvious part on it--her name. Coming up with two or more runes wasn't exactly difficult, but she wanted the combination to make sense. She wanted them to be together for some specific reason.
Because of that, she decided to not start with the runes themselves, but with what object they would go on. Hmm... What area of her life might she need some kind of guidance in? A grin spread across her face. Well, duh! She needed help with---RUNES. Ancient Runes was starting to click with her, but she still wasn't good at it. She decided to create a rune that could carved on the cover of her textbook or on her parchment. The third year began pouring over her textbook to find a few runes that might work for that.
Fehu. Kenaz. Wunjo.
Knowing what runes she would use and what their purpose would be, she began to record her thoughts on parchment.
Quote:
Name: Maddie Kemp
Bind Runes Used:
- Fehu: Wealth and success will soon arrive.
- Kenaz: A solution to a long-standing issue.
- Wunjo: Success and achievement of a goal.
- Reason: I decided to create a bind rune that would help me achieve better results in Ancient Runes class. I chose Fehu, Kenaz, and Wunjo for the reasons listed above. I underlined a few key points that really stood out to me, too--success, solution, and achievement. I think this bind rune would be good to carve on my textbook and draw on top of a piece of parchment. I could even get it on a necklace to wear around my neck!
She turned in her assignment then grabbed her belongings. "Have a super cool and awesome day, Headmistress!" she said.
*catching up* *had to take couple days for RL* *hoping to have time for a graphic*

So...his question would remain a mystery then. But it was still VERY much on the forefront of his mind as he looked over the remaining runes that he had not yet figured out, his curiosity wanting to sort that all out as well and like...well...wouldn't it be NEAT to be able to activate one of these bind runes right here right now?
Which meant that he was only sorta half paying attention as the lesson moved on and each of them asked to share what they thought each bind rune was used for and such. Though he reckoned that he could just give the woman his parchment at the end of class since, well, he had about ten billion follow up questions he wanted to ask anyway.
The fifth year came back to reality and out of his own thoughts somewhere around that one Slytherin first year talking about the hinge strap. But by the time he had put two and two together...the Headmistress was speaking again and moving them all on to an activity...
...buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut his hand went RIGHT back up, feeling persistent in the moment.
"Can...we, er, you, er, someone not activate them now?" To find out and such? Sorta sounded like the sort of thing cursebreakers at the Ministry would do, you know? Then they could piece together history a bit more and fit those into the puzzle that had formed around their discovery and stuff. "How would one even go about doing that?"
As for what sort of bind rune he wanted to make? It should come to absolutely no one's surprise that his thoughts went straight for the ones having to do with creatures. Which naturally meant that Ehwaz was jotted down onto his parchment immediately - upon flipping it over so as not to confuse these thoughts with his doodles and wanderings with the bindrunes.

"Wonder if I can SPELL something out with all these," he said aloud to himself, tongue sticking out to the side as he scribbled all the alphabet equivalents down and leaned back to look at them. "E, U, F, TH, X or Z, M, V or W..." More like a SOUND given the combination of runes he had. Though he quickly decided that Z was a better option than X simply from an aesthetic standpoint.
Now...HOW to combine these all together. There was the tricky bit. Quill in hand once more, Derf set to doodling on his parchment, testing out different ways of putting everything together before settling on a final design...as classmates slowly began trickling out of the classroom.

So now they had to create their own bind runes. Which meant figuring out what exactly he wanted his to do. He knew he wanted protection to be a part of it, but from what? Hmm. Some thought was needed.
Text Cut: Ronan's Parchment
Name: Ronan Carter House & Year: Gryffindor Seventh Year
Possible Runes:
Haglaz:Uses: removing unwanted influences, breaking destructive patterns Energy: Power beyond human ability to harness, perfect pattern, seed formation, objective confrontation, destructive natural forces, chaos
Dagaz:Uses: To bring a positive outcome Energy: Twilight/dawn polarity, non-dual reality, unity, synthesis, transmutation
EhwazUses:Power, aiding in communication, transportation; to 'send' a spell Energy: Trust, cooperation, the fetch
TeiwazUses: Protection, victory, strength, strengthening the will, healing a wound Energy: Sovereign order, sacrifice, right decision making
Decided on runes: Dagaz, Teiwaz, Haglaz
Reasoning: I wanted a bind rune that would help me break negative patterns in my life. So, Haglaz since that is pretty much one of the defined uses of that rune and Dagaz and Teiwaz for the positive outcome and protection and victory aspects, respectively
Completed Bind Rune:
His work done, Ronan gathered his things, quickly made a copy of his work for reasons, placed his completed assignment on the Headmistress' desk with a [B]"See you later, Headmistress and left the room.

Okay, so the only time a reversed rune actually made a difference was if it was inverted as well as mirrored. Stasya made a note of that, as the headmistress had answered the question she had asked after offering her theory as to the penannular brooch bind rune’s meaning. The fact she’d agreed with her also made her feel accomplished, too, along with the fact it appeared most people were offering ideas on the hinge strap and the gold pendant. Easier wasn’t always better, or at least she was finding that out this term. Considering everything that was on her plate now, both due to her being a prefect and for other reasons. She wasn’t regretting any of it, either. Only if she completely failed at any part of what she’d taken on, and she was confident enough about most of it. Including her slowly developing knowledge about runes.
The whole Viking part of it all intrigued her too, and made her think about her family. The whole end part of the discussion, about how everything they’d talked about was just theories and not proof of anything nearly got forgotten in her considering other things. Family things, as her uncle and aunts had led to her thinking about her mama, and the mini-activity having to do with making up their own bind runes just sort of fell into place. She could have done a creature-related bind rune. It probably would have been nearly expected of her by now, or something having to do with cookies. Baking in general, but she liked that without runes to help her. Instead, she looked through all the runes and scribbled down something else entirely.
SPOILER!!: Stasya’s bind rune
Runes used:
Hagalaz: hailstone, meanings: letting go of the past, destruction and rebirth, disappointment leading to change
Gebo: gift, meanings: relationships, romance, good fortunes
Raidho: ride or journey, meanings: a journey, change, progress, life lessons
Jera: year or harvest, meanings: change (positive), a positive resolution, with Gebo: happiness in relationships and/or money
The meaning of my bind rune: I created this bind rune to help my mama get past all the bad stuff that’s happened to her because of my papa leaving us. Because of her history, which is kind of mine too so partly the rune can help me get past it all too. Even though I’m still pretty sure my papa still loves me and my brother, and probably my mama too, he still abandoned all of us. Mostly, though, I want the rune to help my mama find someone who won’t abandon us, who can help her heal from the hurt that I know she feels even if she got an explanation from him.
She didn’t know if the headmistress knew about all of that, if Professor Hirsch had told her anything since she did know he knew. Considering she’d told him back when it had all happened, but either way, she’d made sure to add her name and information to the sheet of parchment before packing up her notes and everything else and stood to hand her the assignment. She trusted her enough to read it, even if she wasn’t quite as trusting to open up about the whole story. This had more meaning to her than just a creature bind rune.
“Thank you for the lesson. I found it really interesting to see some of the treasure close up, and to try and figure out the runes on it all,” she said, giving the woman a smile. At least she had something else to consider now, aside from the grindylows and her friends being injured, related to the Creature Companions activity. Now to write that letter to send to her aunt, or maybe just to her grandparents to bypass the confusion.

Derf was still sketching out possible patterns, siphoning the ink away from his parchment with Tergeo when he was not satisfied with the end result until he had something that he was somewhat satisfied with.
Sorta...it looked, well, a mess.
Though...it still did not sit well with him and he couldn't exactly put his finger on WHY. Was it really this simple? Just, you know, slapping runes together on parchment (in their case at least) or carving it into wood or whatever? There was just SO much he wanted to ask...though one glance at the clock and the ever dwindling number of classmates told him he would have to save that for another time and another day spent in the library. This all counted as studying for his Ancient Runes OWL, right?
But rather than leaving just yet...Derf remained seated and tried (again) to draw his bind rune so it would hopefully look a bit less.....messy.

Jessa had already been anticipating the next part of the lesson, in fact, she was just about half way through doing as the Headmistress began to instruct when those around her began filling in the relative silence with responses of their own.
Rather than listen--or try to join the conversation actually--the Ravenclaw continued looking over the runes and when she was satisfied in herself that she'd figured things out, the young girl looked to the other items once more and began dissecting their runes too. Vaguely......very vaguely she was listening to the responses of her classmates and taking everything they said with a grain of salt. Of course she could distinguish what made sense and what didn't but out of habit, Jessa didn't tend to use what they said to further her knowledge base.
It was nothing personal...not really...just a personal preference when it came to filtering out information.
Runes, like Potions, Transfiguration and Charms, was a very precise subject matter. Getting an answer half right or mostly right wasn't enough for her and honestly Jessa had half expected the woman to go over everything after the last answer was given just in case but when that didn't happen the Prefect simply remained silent.
Nothing to add, nope, not when she was still off in her own world with her own thoughts on the items and their bind runes.

Oh but now they'd be making their own bind runes? The Ravenclaw already had several employed in and around her lab as well as on some of her subjects. Rather than create an entirely new bind rune that would be of little to no use to her, Jessa opted to copy down one of the ones she already knew to be in existence.
An inconsequential one. One that wouldn't cost her anything should anyone decide to intervene. Shouldn't have been too hard, in fact, the 16 year old already knew which she would jot down.
She pulled for a fresh piece of parchment and set to work.
Isa -
To stop a process; to represent primal form.
Eihwaz -
To bring about profound change, to ease a life transition.
Dagaz -
To bring a positive outcome.
The bind rune is pretty self explanatory but it's very useful when countering the negative effects that may present themselves while...well...I'm not sure I'm allowed to write about it since it's meant to be hush hush--but know that this combination helps to prevent the chaotic aggression that overcame the birds that were previously in the study. The felines have been quite friendly and sociable thanks to the suppression of all the negative energy that may have otherwise made them into a problem that needed taking care of. So we're clear, this makes them perfectly safe and not in need of scrutiny.
Once she was done, Jessa headed up to the Headmistress and handed her the parchment. "Here you go. I hope it's okay. I tried leaving out most of the details just in case." She was welcome.
But really, this particular set had proven quite beneficial after animating the cat and the kneazle. Not once had they tried attacking anyone--and no her dolls didn't count.

Dutifully taking notes, or at least attempting to, it was due to Skylar only half paying attention that she realized there were items revealed ... ones from the black lake on the creatures companion excursion that Skylar herself had been feeling rather unfocused at. Honestly, was this what senioritis was about? Feeling disconnected from everything and anything? At least she had managed to submit university applications, but even so, she almost wished she'd have waited given talks she had with Noémi and Cassie recently about narrowing her focus but also the possibility for applying to just a general studies program rather than selecting something specific... And okay, she'd had the talk with Apollo too, but who could blame her for not properly hearing him when the boyfriend was super duper pretty. Just like, who could blame her for not properly focusing on runes when she thought of him just now. How was she meant to be a curse-breaker if she lost focus so easily?
Focus, Skylar, focus.
Approaching the table cautiously, she decided to have a look at the two brooches and record and compare the runes present within each of them. Maybe a compare and contrast, on what it means for each brooch?
The one looked like a reverse nauthiz?
SPOILER!!: Notes
Brooch
1) Nauthiz (reverse) - ᚾ Gebo - ᚷ
Interpretation: A gift will be given, or possibly a marriage proposal or an opportunity to put forward such a proposal is on its way. A generous, bountiful person who wishes to enrich one's life, romantically or materially. A divine gift, the gift of life or of balance. It is important that all parties remain equitable when the gift is given, or that balance which is so important to relationships may be endangered.
2) Mannaz - ᛗ Wunjo - ᚹ (twice?)
Interpretation: Success and achievement of a goal. The attainment of desire, possibly a person, a monetary desire, or otherwise. Fantasies are soon to be fulfilled when this rune appears.
One must be careful that the desires in this rune do not give rise to an obsessive nature. Too much focus can be placed on the end goal rather than the means of achieving it. The appearance of this rune may indicate a need to stop and reassess -- to take measure of the object of one's pursuits. Wunjo reminds us that some fantasies are best left to the realm of fantasy.
3) Fehu?? Mannaz
Penannular Brooch
1) Ansuz - ᚨ
Interpretation: Usually Ansuz signifies an authority figure in the life of the individual, such as an employer, teacher, or parent. Whoever this figure may be, they are about to facilitate a positive life-changing event for the individual. One may look forward to a promotion or bonus due to excellent work. A book may be written, a great work composed, a long-standing problem may be solved creatively. Whatever this achievement is, assistance will be received from someone well qualified to give it.
Ansuz may also reference a highly creative person, or a creative solution to a long-standing problem.
2) Raidho (Reverse) - ᚱ
Merkstave: Journeys may often just be detours off of one's primary path, not part of our primary life journey. Moves and career changes can also mean disruptions in personal relationships, and these must be maintained in order to remain a whole person. Failure to move on will cause stunted growth.
3) Wunjo (Reverse) - ᚹ Fehu - ᚠ
Interpretation: Wealth and success will soon arrive. Long hours of hard work which took place in the past which will soon be rewarded. Wealth is always fluid and changing, but Fehu's appearance usually signifies an upswing in business affairs and earnings. Carried with the rune Fehu is the warning to apply these new earnings to things that have solidity and permanence once they arrive. The fluidity of the earnings which are referenced here also reminds us that wealth slip easily through one's fingers. Caution and restraint must be exercised.
Why was she struggling soooo much with figuring out what runes were contained in each of these bind runes?? How was she meant to be a curse-breaker?? Maybe she wasn't meant to do that at all and she'd NEVER be able to do as Hirsch and Hawthorne did two years ago during the play recital? And suddenly, even as Hawthorne revealed the runes on the blackboard, Skylar felt everything crashing down on her. Who was she anyway? Who was she meant to be? Why was she unable to figure anything of her potential career about? And sure, she was only seventeen, but she was smart. Or at least thought she was. She had achieved twelve owls. But what did that even mean? It was pointless if she couldn't even apply it to simple bindrunes and so much so that she completely missed the Headmistress' question about the purpose of the bind rune. Not that she'd have anything intellectual to offer to the discussion anyway, so instead, she just stared out, listening to her peers, trying to regain some sense of control. Or sense. Trying. Trying. That was all she ever seemed to do lately, but what if her trying wasn't enough? What if it was all in vain?
It was at Hawthorne speaking of bringing the lesson to a close that sort of woke Skylar from her reverie of whatever it was she was thinking about. Wait. What? They had to create their own bind rune? Feeling completely uninspired and confused and lost about anything, Skylar took a deep breath and decided to just use the runic letter equivalent to each letter in her first name. Maybe it'd even offer her some guidance? Probably not, but who knew?
SPOILER!!: Create your own bind rune
Skylar Diggory
Slytherin
Seventh Year
S: Sowilo - ᛋ. Success; a more permanent and lifelong success than the harvest time of Jera.
K: Kenaz - <. A solution to a long-standing issue. Clarification will come after a long struggle -- the solution will seem simple after the long struggle that has led up to it.
Y: Jera - ᛃ. Jera represents "change" -- most frequently positive change.
L: Laguz - ᛚ. Laguz is typically a negative rune. It signifies uncertainty, and a powerlessness to act in the face of overwhelming opposition. If however, the question being asked is "Should I continue" with something, Laguz instructs very clearly to continue in the same way that water flows uninterrupted.
A: Ansuz - ᚨ. Usually Ansuz signifies an authority figure in the life of the individual, such as an employer, teacher, or parent. Whoever this figure may be, they are about to facilitate a positive life-changing event for the individual.
R: Raidho - ᚱ. In a reading, a physical journey is likely when Raidho appears. This journey will likely be successful and will lead to a important changes in one's life. A move or a career change is foretold. New experiences and insights await us over the horizon, and will shape the course of our lives.
Purpose / meaning: All together it seems as though I'm on a journey and there's a lot of uncertainty in my future with regards to struggles and overwhelming feelings and obstacles. But despite the struggles, there will be some permanent and lifelong success, perhaps due to the addition of ansuz, some authority figure will help to facilitate that positive life-changing event.
Blinking as she read over the six runes again, she wasn't sure how much it truly connected to her as a divinatory reading, but it somehow gave her hope. Light. That things would be okay. They would, wouldn't they? Once done, she headed up to the Headmistress to hand in her parchment, hoping it was enough.

She was certain that some felt cheated by there not being any concrete answers as to what the bind runes were used for. In fact, she could empathize with that. She herself didn't know for certain, though there were some theories that were expressed that she did agree with. But they would all have to wait until the Wizarding Treasure Trove Unit had a look at those bind runes themselves as well as the other items that were part of the hoard.
When Derfael's hand shot up, asking whether or not the bind runes could be activated and how one would go about doing that, Regina simply smiled at him before responding. Of course, she once being a Curse-Breaker meant she was more than capable of activating the runes, but further investigating needed to be done, gaining more information about the historical context, and so on by the museum first.
"We'll be getting to that into the lessons leading up to the holidays," she did eventually reply to him, giving that preview to anyone else who was listening as well. They needed to learn about runic charms and how to appropriately use them, the ways of proper carving, chanting galdrs, and then putting it all together.
But first they needed a firm grasp about bind runes. As everyone worked, the headmistress casually walked around the room, quickly glancing at the drawings being done. For the most part, many were keeping their bindrunes relatively simple. Others, however, were going a little overboard. But, alas, this was just a learning exercise. If the drawings were to be referenced to in later lessons, they could be simplified then.
As students began coming up one by one to turn in their work, Regina took one last glance at her watch to see how much time was left before it was time for everyone to head to their next class. Being that there were a few minutes left, she let those who were still diligently working continue. Though, once time was up, she gave a little cough and waited by the door.
"Have a good rest of your day," she cheerfully said to the last few students on their way out. Then, with a wave of her wand, the piece of parchment that had been placed on her desk levitated in the air and obediently followed her as she exited the classroom.
OOC: And that's a wrap! Thank you all so much for participating in this lesson. House points will be awarded within the next few days. I'll be seeing you all around Hogwarts! ^_____^
