Default Ancient Runes Lesson - The Runes That Bind

Snow began falling once again not long before breakfast and, by the time everyone needed to head off to class, the snow was still gracefully falling. Whether or not you wanted to venture off outside of the school and play in it, one of the first classes of the day was keeping you indoors as today's Ancient Runes lesson was taking place in its usual setting: in its designated classroom on the fifth floor. Better get there quick so you don't have to linger in the drafty corridor for too long or, even worse, end up being late to class.

Once inside the warm room, you notice that the desks are not in their usual places. Rather than being in straight rows, they are set up in a large horseshoe-like fashion. There are no clear-cut clues whatsoever to help you infer the reasoning behind the arrangement. However, scattered in the middle of the horseshoe, there are five small tables. That is, perhaps, the more perplexing thing about today's setup for every table has something on it, each of varying shapes and sizes, covered by a white sheet. Will your curiosity get the better of you?

Though you may want to sneak a peek at what is underneath the sheets as you make your way to a desk, you are unable to do so without being caught. Headmistress Hawthorne is clearly visible in the front of the room and watches with a small smile on her face as you and your classmates arrive.

OOC: My apologies for the late start; I was having some internet issues the other day. Without further ado, let's get this party started! ... Take note that this is NOT the first Ancient Runes lesson your character has had with the headmistress this term. Also, please familiarize yourself with the classroom rules before posting. The lesson has started, but feel free to jump in at any time!

Reese made his way to one of his favorite classes.. Ancient Runes.. It was a fascinating subject.. It was essentially the first form of magical binding and enchantment placing.. For him, it was right up there with Astronomy.. Even if he'd been booted from a lesson for what he saw were minimal infractions, but... Moving along..

In he entered with his girlfriend Quinn, after climbing about five hundred stairs from his common room to Ravenclaw Tower to meet up with her and then to class, with rosy cheeks and a eager to learn smile. " Hello, Professor.. Can't wait to see what today's lesson is about.. ", he said with a bit of excitement.

He then made his way to a seat that faced directly at the middle table.. Once he'd taken his text book and notebook from his bag and set up his desk he walked over to study the outlined objects under the white clothe covers.. ' I wonder what they are..', he thought as he glanced over and saw that he was being watched... BOO!

Still.. He slowly circled the setup.. still wondering what was covered..

Quinn followed Reese into the classroom in her normal silent manner and took the seat next to him. She gave the Headmistress a small nod. Her eyes were in constant motion as she examined the covered tables in the middle, taking in every little detail of the way each draped over their mystery items.

Reese, naturally, opted for a closer look.

Nothing, she found, in the shapes they made gave her enough clues to determine what they were. And, as it were, Quinn was sure they would find out soon enough. Patience, in this case, was a virtue.

Satisfied she'd not be able to tell what was hidden on the tables, just by looking, and while her boyfriend circled them like a hungry shark, Quinn set about unpacking. She pulled parchment, her textbook, a bottle of scarlet ink and her eagle feather quill from her bag, and arranged them on her desk.

Then, as class hadn't started yet, and she had a minute or two before then, Quinn pulled out her book, opened it, and started reading. She'd put it away once the class began.

Ancient Runes.

That was the beginning and end of Maddie's thoughts on the subject she'd decided to take up this year. She still had no idea what to think about, but here she was. The third year climbed the stairs to the fifth floor, her book bag thrown across her shoulders with its straps clutched tightly in her hands. It was snowing outside, but it was always snowing outside. She was actually happy to be inside today.

Being new to Ancient Runes, Maddie had no idea that the desks were different in any way. She took a seat toward the left end of the horseshoe and dropped her bag by her feet. "Morning, Headmistress!" she said. She still thought it was SO COOL to be taught by the head of the whole castle!

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

After a good breakfast down at in the Great Hall, Dorian had grabbed his school bag and had hoisted it over his shoulder before he started his climb up to the fifth floor for another lesson in Ancient Runes.

He was prepared today. Well, a bit more prepared. The subject was still one of his most difficult but he liked difficult subjects. He saw them as a challenge he could try and tackle. And at first he hated not knowing something in general but after nearly three years he had learned that gaining knowledge was something to be earned and not given.

He entered the classroom on time for a change HA and got excited at the arrangement of the tables. He did not know why they were placed in this shape but it was something different than the typical classroom style. Next up were the table in the center that caught his attention and the Ravenclaw walked towards one of them to check under the white sheet when his eyes found the Headmistress. "Hello Headmistress" he greeted with a small smile and his finger pointed at the sheet. "Can i take a look,Professor?" No harm in asking , right?

After staying up too late studying the night before and missing breakfast that morning, Emmalyn trudged up to the fifth floor. Just before entering the room, she plastered on the brightest smile she could, hoping to get herself awake and in the proper mindset for class. "Good morning, Headmistress." She greeted, surveying the new seating arrangement. She scanned for the best seat, one she could use to her advantage and didn't directly face Professor Hawthorne, just in case she failed at keeping the exhaustion off her face.

As she took her seat, she noticed the five tables and concealed lumps under them. She wondered what was up with all of the professors hiding objects under blankets this term. Either way, she was very curious to find out what was hidden and what fun was to be had.

As most of the professors opted for warming charms this time of the year, Ronan hadn't bothered with coats, since that would be just one more thing to gather when leaving a class. However, this meant jogging to class most of the time so the cold didn't settle in. Luckily, he was in good enough shape that he wasn't out of breath or anything when he reached the Ancient Runes classroom. Slowing down to enter the room at a walking pace, he noticed the different set-up. Wonder what this was all about? And what was under the sheets?

Figuring they'd find out soon enough, he chose a seat towards the middle with a "Hello, Headmistress Hawthorne."

Yeaaahhhhh...she wanted to know what was below the sheets.

It would be winter break in a few weeks and Jessa had been forced to come to terms with the fact that when it came to lessons, she would remain under-stimulated. Indeed, it may have been the only downside to finishing the Hogwarts syllabus well ahead of when she needed to. The small surprises were what kept her brain from entirely imploding and the temptation to seek out more advanced studies from her professors was all too real.

For now though...she would take any and all stimulation that she could. “Hello Headmistress.” She greeted the woman, not at all bothering to be discreet as she pulled at one end of the sheet. If there was a note somewhere saying they shouldn’t, that warning had gone right over the Ravenclaw’s head. Consequently, she wasn’t at all trying to be subtle or sneaky.

“I was hoping I could have a word with you after class, if you won’t be busy then.” As she spoke, Jessa casually and carefully kept lifting the sheet, not at all bothered that no one else had outright tried to.

The majority of her schoolmates were not as curious as she was. The Sixth Year has long since accepted that.

The snow was definitely tempting, especially since Stasya knew that both her pets liked playing in it, and there were plenty of other creatures out in the barns that she’d just generally been keeping an eye on and it was going to be that much more complicated to get out there if she had to wait until after the Runes lesson. Not impossible by any means, just more complicated. However, she also knew better than to skive off Runes. Not when, somehow, it was one of her better subjects. Probably because it still reminded her a lot of things she’d seen because of her grandparents when she was younger, for the same reason she continued greeting Professor Baldvinsson in Icelandic during every Flying lesson. She did better in Runes than Flying, though.

She had finished off a scone from breakfast on her way up to the fifth floor, thankful for the stairs as the climb helped keep her warmer than she would’ve been otherwise, even if she did have an extra jumper in her bag for her trip out to the barns later. That and a few heating charms and she figured she’d be okay. Plus, she could always use a runestone if she needed to. First, her lesson, and she’d merely given the smallest amount of attention to the change in seat layout as she’d walked inside the Runes classroom. Odds were there was a reason, and she knew by now that they’d be given that information sooner or later. Just as they’d find out what was hidden on those tables. Headmistress Hawthorne knew what she was doing.

She’d given the headmistress a smile as she settled in an open seat, getting what she’d need out of her bag before she settled in. “Good morning, Headmistress Hawthorne.” Now to find out what they’d be learning today.

Vivian was quite glad they were taking in the classroom setting for this lesson. As much as she would love to make snow angels and build a snow man, the Head Girl was in the mood to sit in front of the fire place. She hoped there were heating charms in the classroom today, despite already sporting a jacket.

Hmm, why the weird desk arrangement? Interesting. "Good morning, Headmistress," Vivian greeted the woman with a smile before finding herself a seat. And yes, she was curious. What was under that white sheet? Maybe her first year self would have decided to take a peek, but not anymore.

Now where were her friends?

Oh, how he'd itched to go outside for a short walk in the light snow. And that had been exactly what he'd done, since he'd had some minutes to spare and still be early for Ancient Runes. Daehyun would never risk being late, Merlin forbid. So, with flushed cheeks and stray snowflakes still melting on his hair and robe, he walked into the classroom with a smile on his face, and greeted Headmistress Hawthorne. "Hello, Headmistress!"

His eyes then fell on the odd way she'd rearranged the desks, but soon shrugged it off and dropped his bag next to a desk on the side of the horseshoe shape. Such structures nearly always meant group work, which he dreaded, but the walk out in the snow put him in a good mood. His mind was clear and fresh, so maybe it wouldn't be that bad. This one time.

Zoryn Spinnet was not in the mood today. Actually, she wasn't in the mood at all recently, it seemed. Especially now that her habits weren't exactly the healthiest, being in class was the last place she ever found herself. Unless it was Runes. Because unfortunately, the Headmistress taught Runes and as much as Zoryn WANTED to skip this class, she also didn't want to get expelled.

So despite her raging headache from the night before, the Gryffindor made her way inside the classroom looking worse for wear. "Hi Professor," she mumbled in a less-than-enthusiastic tone before going to find a seat by someone she knew wouldn't annoy her. Like Jessa. Hey.

She slunk down into her chair.

Ancient Runes had easily become one of the fifth year's favorite subjects despite not particularly excelling in it. He wasn't rubbish either, but typically when one listed their favorite subjects to others their marks reflected a certain level to them...a level which the Hufflepuff did not particularly have. The lure was the mythology and storytelling that came with the runic alphabet for him. That and the Headmistress always provided them with a very real practical application to each rune they were harnessing in a lesson - a quality that he could not say was true for all other classes at Hogwarts. Plus, well, teaching him the tools to communicate with animals - like horses species - was a sure way to win the young man over.

He had also begun associating the subject with being OUTSIDE and with the snow falling he reckoned they might be focusing on Hagal - more from the Armanen Futharkh maybe than the Scandinavian runes - today because of it's associations with hoar-frost, winter and snow in general.

But they were inside. With tables covered in sheets that Jessa was presently trying to peek under.

Boo being indoors. Sigh.

"Morning, Headmistress," he greeted, voice chipper despite his disappointment at being indoors, before slipping into a seat and beginning to set out his things.

Snow was falling outside and here she was making her way into Ancient Runes. She wasn't terribly horrible in the subject but it wasn't one that she excelled at either. Perhaps if some more effort were to be put into learning the Runes and their meanings she might enjoy it more but as of right now she had more than enough on her plate.

Uhh.. okay. What's up with the weird setting arrangement. Rylee quickly glanced around for an empty seat. "Good morning, Headmistress Hawthorne," she greeted with a warm smile slipping into a seat and pulling out what she would need for the lesson, arranging the items on her desk.

What was up with the white sheets covering whatever was on those smaller tables? The second year was curious for sure but not enough to get up from her seat to have a look.

Runes was one of those lessons that Skylar looked forward too because somehow she actually made sense of it. Not to mention she half was considering studying it further. Or it was on her list of options, at least.

Greeting the Headmistress, yes she noted the sheet but she also wasn't foolish enough to actually dare to take a peek. She took her usual seat next to Vivian and glanced around, tapping her fingers lightly on her desk. Where were the other snakes? Apparently they were going to need a house meeting or something if everyone was going to be skiving off classes as they were...

Shivering because of the cold the Slytherin entered the classroom, relieved to feel the warmth and she relaxed immediately. But while looking around her to see that the positions from the tables had chanced she just shrugged, almost every lessen was different so why being surprised after all those years? But the sheet… What was under it? Looking quick at the teacher she smiled shortly but still polite before walking further. She wanted to look under the sheet but… She wanted to look cool at the same time so she flipped her hair over her shoulder and walked past the sheet without even looking. Hah! She looked cool, she was sure of it!

Ancient Runes. Quite frankly Caleb don't really enjoy this subject mainly because it doesn't sound that interesting. The things you learn in Ancient Runes are awesome but it's not like the other subjects. What does Caleb even know? He is fourteen after all. He just needs that extra push.

He made his way towards the classroom and noticing the seats. He looked at his professor and greeted "hello headmistress" then finds himself a seat. He also stared at the sheets. Surely he is not the first person to notice this.

Very odd indeed. Best to start the lesson soon.

Worried about being late, he practically ran to the Ancient Runes classroom. He'd lost track of time while eating his breakfast scrambled eggs and then had to run aaaaaall the way to the fifth floor.

Physical activity of any sorts wasn't his thing so it was an uncharacteristically disheveled Maxton that stumbled into the classroom. Phew, he wasn't late.

"G-Good... Good Morning, Headmistress."
Woah, he was out of breath. And owwwww, he had cramp in his side from all the post-food exercise.

Clutching his side and catching his breath, the fifth year turned and slipped into the nearest empty chair.

Was she surprised to see that Reese was the first to show up to Ancient Runes class? Maybe a little. But was she surprised to see that he was accompanied with Quinn? Not at all. The headmistress silently watched as they made their way further inside the room, though couldn't help but notice that the Hufflepuff's cheeks were rosier than normal. What was that about? Hmm.

But, of course, she didn't pry into that. "Good morning, Mr. Prichard," she said simply, saying no more to allow him to get settled in and ready for yet another class period of learning.

Patience most certainly was a virtue.

The next to enter the room was Maddie, who didn't seem phased at all by the setup and made quick work of finding herself a seat. Regina turned toward the Hufflepuff third year and gave her a wave, returning her greeting with a "Hello, Miss Kemp."

At this point, the woman started to casually walk around the room, gradually inching closer and closer toward the covered tables. As she did this, she saw Dorian walk toward one of the tables. Regina, carefully watching him and stopping her walking temporarily, waited to see what he would do. Would he just sneak a peek or ask to look?

She wasn't at all surprised that he ended up asking. "Good morning, Mr. Katharos," she said with a smile. As for his question, she added, "Not yet, Mr. Katharos. All in good time. But thank you for asking." She could appreciate one seeking permission, rather than the other option.

She greeted, surveying the new seating arrangement.

After giving her response to Dorian, Emmalyn was the next student that she noticed. Given the girl's bright smile, Regina didn't register just how exhausted the Hufflepuff actually was. "Greetings, Miss Walsh."

But good luck finding a seat that didn't directly face the headmistress. Sitting in the horseshoe meant there was nowhere to hide; everyone could see everyone.

Then the Head Boy made an appearance. The smile remained on her face as she watched Ronan take a seat toward the middle of the horseshoe. "Hello, Mr. Carter," she responded to the seventh year after his greeting. She didn't have time to ask how his final year was going because she had someone trying to get under one of the sheets...

"Hello, Miss Cambridge," the headmistress said as she saw the Ravenclaw prefect ever so slowly lifting up the sheet. The smile that was on her face did fade. Whether there was a sign or not telling them not to look, there was an obvious reason why the sheet was there to begin with.

At the girl's request to speak with her after class, Regina nodded. "That can be arranged," she said. Then the woman quickly added, "Hands off the sheet, please." All would be revealed soon enough.

Her head turned and the Gryffindor prefect registered in her mind. The smile returned on her face as she took a few steps toward Stasya as the girl took her seat and then said, "Good morning, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova."

The next in the room was the Head Girl. The headmistress continued her casual walk along the horseshoe, making her way toward her as others entered the room. "Salutations, Miss Fairfield," she said as she passed by.

Her eyes then fell upon Daehyun, who, based on the rosy cheeks and the snowflakes melting in his hair, had made a slight detour before heading to Ancient Runes. The woman didn't berate him though. He was, after all, on time.

"Hello, Mr. Yoon," she replied, the smile on her face perhaps getting a tad bigger, as he got settled in.

Though the smile lessened a little at the sight of Zoryn Spinnet. The sight of the girl and the mumbling was, to say the least, rather concerning. Believe it or not, the headmistress much rather wanted that odd spunk the Gryffindor had the years prior present and accounted for.

"Good morning," she responded, in spite of the girl's mumbling and non-enthusiastic tone. She did move toward the girl as she took her seat. "Are you alright, Miss Spinnet?" she quietly whispered.

Then there was the Hufflepuff prefect, who she already could guess wasn't too pleased about being stuck inside for class. But, truth be told, her lessons weren't always held out of the classroom. There was balance, and the outdoor classes only happened when it was appropriate to do so. Unfortunately for Derfael, today's lesson was more appropriate for being indoors.

"Hello, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne," she replied to him with a smile.

Uhh..

Next up was Rylee. As the girl took her seat, the headmistress returned her smile and greeting with one of her own. "Good morning, Miss Prichard."

And she then moved on to the next student without another word, leaving the second year to wonder what was underneath the sheets.

The Slytherin Quidditch captain was greeted with a smile and a 'Good morning, Miss Diggory.' The woman watched as the girl walked past the tables, not at all surprised that she didn't try sneaking a peek, and took her usual place beside Vivian.

Though the woman did wonder what the finger tapping was for. Was Skylar that eager for class to begin? The woman couldn't tell for sure, but class would be starting soon enough. There were only a few minutes left for the stragglers to get there on time.

She wanted to look under the sheet but… She wanted to look cool at the same time so she flipped her hair over her shoulder and walked past the sheet without even looking. Hah! In through the door came Leesha, and Regina took note that the girl was pleased to be somewhere warm. She gave a quick 'Hello, Miss Griffel' as the girl walked by, and had to stifle a laugh at seeing her do a hair flip and purposefully move past the tables as if they weren't there. He made his way towards the classroom and noticing the seats. He looked at his professor and greeted "hello headmistress" then finds himself a seat. He also stared at the sheets. Surely he is not the first person to notice this.

Very odd indeed. Best to start the lesson soon.
Another Slytherin followed suit. "Hello, Mr. Dawkins," she said to the fourth year cheerfully. She was glad to see the fourth year there, even if he didn't quite enjoy the subject. At the very least, she hoped Caleb found it interesting -- otherwise, what was the point in taking the elective subject, right?

"G-Good... Good Morning, Headmistress."
Woah, he was out of breath. And owwwww, he had cramp in his side from all the post-food exercise.

Clutching his side and catching his breath, the fifth year turned and slipped into the nearest empty chair.
After a quick glance down at her watch, the headmistress started making her way toward the door to physically close it. Ten o'clock was mere seconds away, and those that had taken her classes long enough knew that she didn't wait a second of instructional time. She had just made it to the doorway when Maxton stumbled into the room.

"Good morning, Mr. Carden," she said to the boy as he caught his breath. She gave him a smile and a gentle pat on the shoulder. "You're just in time."
Once the hand on her watched indicated that it was ten o'clock, the woman placed her hand on the knob on the door and closed it. A smile was on her face as she looked at them all, seated in the horseshoe, and steadily walked her way closer to them. She stopped right when she reached the covered tables.

"Good morning, everyone," Regina began, her eyes moving from student to student. There was a brief pause, allowing them all time to prove to her that they were paying attention. As per usual, she only wanted to inform them of what they would be doing in class today and why without having to repeat herself. Time was precious, after all.

"Today's lesson, I will admit, is going to be more theoretical than practical," the headmistress continued, already expecting to hear some groaning and mumbling about it from certain students. "Even though that is the case, there are elements of today's lesson that I think you will enjoy if you just hang in there. I do have some items up here that you may find fascinating to look at closer" -- she made a swift gesture to the covered items -- "and there is an activity near the end of class that allows you to creatively apply what you learned about today's topic."

Again, there was a brief pause given to let that sink in. "But before any of that is revealed, let's set up the foundation for today's class. Our focus is going to be on accurately identifying runes within bind runes and then analyzing them. What are bind runes, and why or when would they be used?"

OOC: Hello, everyone! Thank you all so much for participating in our first role-played Ancient Runes lesson of the term. I am so excited that you are all here! If you have yet to post in this lesson and wish to do so, act like your character has been here the whole time ... unless you want your character to show up late, of course. ;)

To kick of the lesson, Regina basically wants to gauge what your character knows, if anything, about bind runes (they can give the definition of what a bind rune is, provide an example of a bind rune, etc.) and why/when they would be used (explain what is the purpose of a bind rune is, why would someone make/use one, or when using bind rune would be appropriate). Try not to repeat something that was already said as there are a lot of creative answers that can be given, and remember that both correct and incorrect answers will be accepted.

The lesson will continue in roughly 24-30 hours. Have fun!

Trinetta sometimes had trouble in class due to the whole language thing, but Runes was especially terrible. Not only did she have to try and translate Runes from an ancient Nordic language to English, but she also had to translate THAT to French in her brain. It was exhausting, but overall, interesting.

Bind runes? She didn't know much about them, to be truthful, but she knew the absolute basics. She raised her hand and sat up a little straighter - Headmistress Hawthrone always seemed like she was staring straight in to her soul. "Bind runes are basically two or more runes that have been joined together, to put it simply," she told her.

Yeah, that was literally the extent of what she knew.

Quinn slipped the bookmark back between the pages of her book and slipped it back into the depths of her bag. Class was starting, and while many might groan about the theoretical focus of today's lesson, Quinn was not one of them. Theoretical could be just as informative and helpful as practical, and it was never that hard to take something you learned in a more theoretical way, and apply it practically if they had a halfway decent mind in their cavernous head.

So, not that many honestly.

Binding runes? While Quinn often sat quietly and opted not to answer in most of her class regardless of whether or not she knew the answer, the slight uncertain furrow of her brow at the question suggested she didn't know this. Honestly, Quinn hadn't exposed herself to rune all that much before coming to Hogwarts, and didn't know much. That was part of the reason she liked this class. It was all very new to her.

She opened one roll of parchment, and dipped her quill in her scarlet ink, and wrote Binding Runes at the top, ready to take notes.

With her notebook out and ready, Emmalyn started taking down the information. Even though her mind might not be at one hundred percent, she was alert enough to realize she would need the information later.

Under the date and Ancient Runes, she wrote bind rune.

She timidly raised her hand " Professor, I believe bind runes can be hard to read because runes, like Isa, can sort of hide inside like a buried rune. You can use them for things like protection or keeping things hidden."

Her hand raced across her paper, trying to jot down what she had just said before it slipped from her mind forever. It would be far easier for her to mark it out later if her answer was wrong than to think of it again.

He still couldn't quite believe he'd actually made it on time. In the nick of time, yeah. But still on time.

While Headmistress Hawthorne spoke about the upcoming lesson, Max fanned himself with a piece of parchment. Yes, it was the middle of winter but woah all that running and rushing had made him WARM.

At least he'd caught his breath enough to try and give the question a go. Why he was bothering he wasn't really sure because runes were confusing but here goes.

"Well, 'bind' literally means to stick something to something else, right?" He tried, raising his arm in the air. "And I guess they're used because the more runes the better? Like.... it makes the effects stronger?"

Did that even make sense? No idea.

Maddie grew wide-eyed in response to the Headmistress' silent glance around the room. If she didn't know any better, she'd think the woman was trying to figure out which of them she'd eat first. As it was, though, Maddie did know better, but it didn't stop her from remembering that deep down inside, she was afraid of Regina Hawthorne.

Ahem.

The freshly-turned thirteen-year-old had no idea what theoretical and practical meant, but she was along for this ride anyway. Apparently, they were also expected to already have a background in today's topic, which Maddie didn't. Not really. She only knew basic knowledge that came with being raised pureblood.

She raised her hand. "I know that bind means to join together, so I'm guessing bind runes are more than one rune put together," she began. "I think people would make them, because they want the power of more than rune. Like...sometimes you just don't need strength...you might need something like strength and luck."

People around might protest because the class was more on the theoretical side, but Daehyun was excited. Though he did love practical parts in Ancient Runes, also. It was more the practical part in Flying or Divination that he was bad at.

He was scribbling down things he heard, before raising his hand and saying, "Since binding runes are two or more runes joined to form a single one, I suppose they can channel each other's properties and become stronger together?" If that made any sense? "Together, they can become a runic charm, far more powerful than the runes alone." Oh, how he wished they'd go further into that!
