Default Writing & Journalism

Ran by:
Gerald Rush – Daily Prophet Reporter
Nolan Reynolds – Author

Do you believe in the old saying, "the pen is mightier than the sword"? Interested in covering hard-hitting news stories? Or perhaps you have a great idea for a novel? Then the Writing/Journalism booth is the place to be! As you walk into the Great Hall, you’ll notice a burnt orange booth just to the right. This booth is laden with books, magazines, and copies of the Daily Prophet; feel free to take one with you if you find something interesting! The remaining space is full of pamphlets containing all the information you need to know if you’re looking to pursue a career in writing.

The two gentlemen staffing the booth know everything there is to know about the written word and would be happy to answer your questions. If you ask nicely, they might even sign a copy of their work for you!

In truth, Nolan Reynolds could probably stand at quite a few of these stands. Currently, however - well, when he had applied for the job fair, at least - AUTHOR was the best way to describe him. It was nice to be back at the castle, too. He had missed it. Did not miss the grading, or handing out detentions - but the atmosphere of the place was making him nostalgic for the good old days. So now all he had to do was wait and hope some kids actually came up to him and wanted to talk to him and...the other guy who was here. What was his name? He couldn't remember. Some reporter guy.

He had also promised his three children that he would stay FAR away from them and not acknowledge their existence in any way, shape or form. Which was a total lie, because if he saw them, he was definitely going to wave enthusiastically. Hehe.

Anything that dealt with writing was something that attracted Kaysha's attention. It was for this reason she was drawn to this booth- the stacks of books, magazines and other reading were too good to turn away from. "Hello, gentleman,'' she told the two men there but not interested in either of them- at least not for the moment though she did know who they were.

Why?

Because she was already busily running a hand over the book covers looking for something that suited her. My! There was so many to choose from. "Mr. Reynolds? Did you bring any of your latest books with you?'' Kay hadn't gotten around to checking each of the books there as yet so she reasoned she would just ask the man to save her the trouble.

Never in his mind he thought about coming back here, to Hogwarts. But somehow Jorge chose him to be a representative for Daily Prophet at the job fair at his former school and Gerald couldn't help but accept that duty. He always loved doing a field report or something that required him to be out of office because hey, that's the most fun part of being a journalist. Even though he had been working for the Prophet since last year, but Gerald did have some experience working in media industry and perhaps he could... offer some help? That's what he's going to do today, right? Helping those kids to know more about journalism and writing world.

Having his second apple (or third? Honestly he never really counted.) of the day, the 32 year-old just stood there at their booth with Mr. Reynolds. Yes, obviously Gerald knew who this man was because 1) as a lifestyle journalist he expected to recognize him as an author and former ministry candidate and 2) He was one of the man who was elected became a board of governors that happened on his last year at Hogwarts. Yes, he remembered that. "Mr. Reynolds." He greeted the author guy. "And hello, Miss Stewart." Gary (even though nowadays he rarely used this nickname anymore.) politely greeted the professor.

Ah, a visitor! But...it was one of the professors. Not a student. Still, Nolan was going out of his mind with boredom waiting for people to stop by, and was happy for the attention. He smiled and shook his head. "Not any new titles, unfortunately, I'm just about done wrapping up my generalized Divination textbook...but my crystal orb book is here, if you haven't gotten your hands on that one yet," he chuckled. He was pretty sure this wasn't the Divination professor - he'd met her once or twice, and he was pretty sure she was...blonde, yes? But if this one wanted his book he wasn't going to complain! He loved spreading his love for the subject!

"Hello Mr. Rush," Nolan greeted the younger man as he made his way to the stand. Finally, some company! He did appreciate the work all those journalists at the prophet did - especially recently when his son had gone missing, and they'd quickly jumped on the story. Maybe that was why he had gotten picked up and brought home so quickly. Maybe. He tried not to think about that incident - for obvious reasons.

"So, ready to inspire some kids?" he asked the newcomer with a grin. He wasn't sure if any kids would want to come over here to talk to HIM - maybe the reporter, honestly. He knew how popular the Quill had been at school, they were sure to have some aspiring journalists here.

It would be completely rude to ignore Gerald and simply engage in conversation with just Nolan. Besides that fact, Kaysha was genuinely also interested in his work. After all, The Prophet was something she read almost every day. "Working on any exclusive pieces?'' she questioned. "Are you able to share a bit of it if you are?'' She gave him a sweet, innocent smile.

Ah, yes. A Divination book wouldn't hurt. "Divination has always been my weakest subject while at Hogwarts,'' Kay said mildly. "I haven't improved on it one bit though one of my best friends tried to help. She's the current Divination professor here.'' A few minutes after looking, she located the book. "Would you please sign it, ProfessorReynolds?'' He taught her, you know. Surely he remembered how terrible she had been at the subject.

Inspire some kids? He let out a small chuckle. "Yes... I do hope my occupation inspire them." Some people might think being a journalist was kind of boring because all they did was just writing and writing... But little did they know, there was an interesting process behind those articles. Speaking of, he hadn't seen any student came to their booth yet but it didn't mean that none of them were interested, right? Even if nobody came, Gerald could make himself useful by writing an article about this event for the Prophet.

The journalist gave a grin to Kaysha when she asked if he worked on an exclusive piece. "Yes, actually. But I can't really say much about it so... Just wait for it." He actually started writing about his street food adventure but sorry, it was still on writing process so Gerald couldn't talk much about it.

Although he was nearing the end of his sixth year, Levi still wasn't completely sure what he wanted to do after he was done with Hogwarts. The job fair seemed like a decent idea. Hopefully it wasn't too boring.

As the Writing and Journalism was the first booth he saw as he entered the Great Hall, the Ravenclaw headed straight over. Not too much of a queue either. Good, because chances were that if he had to wait long, he'd end up too bored to stick around.

He had always been interested in creative writing, especially literature and poetry. In fact, he thought he was rather good at writing poetry himself.
He just wasn't sure he could turn that into much of a career. But he could at least see what these people had to say and what kinds of options there were.

"Professor," he nodded to Professor Stewart who was hanging around the booth. "Hello," he also mumbled a greeting to the two men standing there. Levi figured they must have something to do with writing careers. He looked over the brochures and literature they had displayed, taking a few for himself. Though he took nothing on reporting or the Daily Prophet. He didn't want to write just to write and he saw nothing creative in journalism.

As a journalist for the quill, writing had definitely been fascinating to the Slytherin Captain, which was why it was really no surprise she ended up at this booth. She wanted to speak to real-life writers about how to be successful in the field, how to make a living.

She blinked at overhearing Professor Stewart though, calling one of the gentlemen, professor. Wait. Reynolds? As in the same surname as Scarlett? She hadn't talked to Scarlett a whole lot, but was the girl's father a professor? Then why was he at the writing booth? And did that mean, Zayn was right? She could do more than one thing by being a journalist?

"Hi there, I'm Skylar Diggory and I'm very interested in a writing career, but I guess, I just wanted to know, did you go to University? Do you need other skills to be successful as a writer? Like, for instance, I also like cursebreaking and creatures and runes and quidditch. So would i be able to use that knowledge set to help me as a reporter? Is being a reporter enough to make a living?" Were they married? She had tons more questions about a writing path, but figured she would leave it at that for now....

Nolan couldn't help but laugh at that. Professor. Merlin, he hadn't been called Professor in years - and it was always weird running in to his former students, who were all adults and had their own careers now. Had it really been two decades since he'd taught here? Time really did fly when you had kids and a family.

"No one has called me that in years, Miss Stewart," he chuckled, unable to help himself from addressing her as he had as a student as well. "And of course, I'd be happy to," he scribbled his signature in the cover of the book and handed it to her. He had never pegged her as one to really get in to Divination when she had been at school, but - maybe his book would change that!

Oh finally! A student interested in picking his brain! Nolan loved to talk about himself and his career, which was obviously why he had applied for this and also to embarrass his kids hehe. He chuckled a bit - this girl was eager and rattled off the questions in one long go. He nodded and listened before addressing her questions, trying to hit on each one.

"I did not go to university, but I was always interested in Divination. I dabbled in quite a few areas of it as soon as I left school before finally teaching it, and it has always been a passion of mine. I practiced so much that I felt I was qualified enough to write a book on crystal orb gazing, which is one of my favorite disciplines of the subject, so you could always end up tying your passions in to your writing,"
he explained. If you put in enough time and energy to something, you could definitely become well versed in it to the point that you could write a book on it!

Okay, the photographs could wait later and let's just do his job here. "Hello there." The 32 year-old journalist greeted him back. A Ravenclaw, huh? "Can I help you with anything?" Perhaps asking some questions related to his occupation? Or did he just come here for a copy of Daily Prophet?

He noticed another student came by, this time was a girl and his blue eyes couldn't help but spot a Slytherin captain badge pinned on her robes. Well, this was interesting since most house team quidditch players were more keen to be a pro. Maybe she should've visited the booth next to them where professional quidditch player and a team owner were there. But she did mention about having an interest in writing so yeah... definitely she wasn't coming to the wrong place.

Gerald carefully listened her questions and let Mr. Reynolds gave his version of answer. "I did study journalism in university, not in WU though because I used to be an intern in muggle magazine before that." And as for next question.... Probably Reynolds had given the best answer since he used to be a former professor who now mostly wrote about his field, divination. But Merlin, this girl was such a jack of all trades. "Yes, but if you did want to pursue in writing, I think it would be better if you choose a specific interest. Like Mr. Reynolds here is an author focusing on Divination topic. This also applies in journalism and media world, like in Daily Prophet."

Is being a reporter enough to make a living? Gerald just let out a small chuckle. "I've been working with journalism for a very long time and I can say it is more than enough." He couldn't talk the exact amount of his salary because it's confidential. "But in the end, how much you earn is not really that necessary if you do enjoy the work."

Ah, so Gearld was indeed busy on a piece. Or pieces. Too bad he couldn't share any further information but Kaysha understood. "Can you at least tell me if it will be a single piece or a series of articles about one topic?''

The woman grinned sheepishly at Nolan. "Old habits die hard. I'm sorry about that.'' She was still grinning as she watched him sign the latest book to be added to her library. "Thank you very much.''

Wonderful! Students were starting to gather. She smiled at Levi. "Hello,'' she greeted. And that was directed to Skylar as well. Kay shuffled off a little to the side. She couldn't occupy both writers' time by herself! The main reason this event was held was for the kiddos. For now she would continue to browse what reading material was on display.
