| | Windows Under the Lake Image Credit: Muggle Dinosaur One of the perks with living in the Hogwarts dungeons is that you get access to your very own under water aquarium and you don't even have to pay a sickle. The uplit dungeon windows in the Common Room give all snake students a direct view of the Great Lake below the water surface level and it's creatures and plant life.
Under the largest windows divans and comfy window seats have been put up with many pillows in an array of colours, but mostly in green and silver as well as stacks of warm blankets if someone wants to cuddle up on a chilly night. A small magical hot beverage maker that makes tea, hot chocolate and coffee complete with cookies from the house elves and cups is stuck next to the most left window. The beverage maker is a charmed gift from Professor Marchand.
So why not come over here, snuggle up with a blanket around your legs next to one of the windows and look out at the lake and its living eco system and you might if you're lucky see a merpeople swim by or the giant squid comes and taps at the windows. |

He didn't mind. He knew different.
The coolest part of being a snake was the view. He took a seat by the window and peered out into the lake. He was ready to see his first underwater animal and / or creature of the year.

If Felicity would hear Slate's thoughts, she would be agreeing with him. The view out into the lake was easily her favourite thing about the Slytherin Common Room, and she'd wasted many an hour sat in front of the windows, mesmerised by the creatures passing by.
Many an hour, when she had a lot more important stuff to do. Like homework. Right now, though, she didn't have any homework to do, and having only a few chapters left in her book (which she was trying to prolong until a copy of Jace's arrived), she headed to her favourite seat.
Slate got a nod, because he was here, too.

Slate got a nod, because he was here, too. Slate glanced up with a grin when he saw someone approach. He'd, of course, seen Felicity around, but hadn't had a formal introduction. Therefore it felt weird mentioning her name. "Hey." that seemed like a good enough greeting. "I think I saw the squid's shadow earlier." In case she was wondering. He just assumed anyone that came by was wanting a lake creature update.

Sweet kid, Felicity couldn't help but think, offering a small smile in response to Slate's grin - the fact that he was willing to great her in such a friendly way when they didn't exactly formally know each other. Curling her feet underneath herself onto the chair, she leaned against the window at the boys next comment.
"You did? He sometimes comes 'round to chat." But Slate probably knew that, didn't he? Now she sounded dumb.

But, not knowing that, he just thought it was more fun to spy on underwater activities with someone else. What if they saw something cool? He'd hate to witness something amazing on his own and not have someone to be like DIDYOUJUSTSEETHAT with.
He nodded. "Yeah. I wish things'd come closer more often." He rapped his knuckles against the window. "But maybe they know they'd distract too many people if they did." Although, now that he thought about it, he highly doubted that sea creatures cared about young human people's education. "Do you think merpeople have schools?" he asked following the same train of thought. He meant the learning institutions. He wasn't wondering if a swarm of merpeople were called schools.
... except.
Now he was wondering that.

Now he was wondering that. "I wish more things came closer," Felicity said, nodding in agreement with the younger boy, hoping he knew what she meant. As great as it was to see the occasional Grindlylow and a fish or two swim by, they didn't often come up to the window like the Squid did. She supposed some of that was that the squid could talk to them, and maybe they couldn't, or maybe having a bunch of faces pressed up against the windows wasn't exactly other creatures idea of a party.
As for merpeople, they were definitely up there on the list of things Felicity would love to see at the window at some point. She giggled ever so slightly at the question, but knew what Slate was getting at - or, at least, hoped she did. "Maybe. What kind of classes do you think they take?"
Swimming 101? Languages?

Swimming 101? Languages? Slate laughed. "That too." He paused for a minute. "I guess it's that way with the forest too. You hear about all the stuff living there, but you never really see or interact with them."
He wasn't entirely sure how comparable the two things were in terms of levels of danger, but it seemed like a fair comparison.
He shrugged a bit. "Maybe they do the same sort of stuff we do. They... take English and... play whatever underwater games there are and..." He squinted at the water. "Maybe they learn to talk to fish."
Wait. Did fish even talk to each other?

Wait. Did fish even talk to each other? Felicity was quiet for a moment as she mused over Slate's words. "That's so true," she said eventually, her voice a little surprised, for she'd never thought about it. "I mean, aside from the ones they bring out for classes." Personally, she'd have loved to speak to the Centaurs, but after hearing stories about their hostility, they did make her wary.
There where probably hundreds of creatures she'd never get to see, though.
"Reckon they have swimming races? Their own history lessons?" Like, how they'd gotten to that lake, and how they built their community there.

"You'd think if things were that dangerous, they wouldn't let them live so close to a school." A school. With children. There were children here.
Although, "safety" was an interesting concept here at Hogwarts.
He chuckled. "Maybe there's an underwater quidditch equivalent." Maybe? "Do you think they play chess?" Could you even play chess without things floating away? "I bet they'd have history class. What about travel? Do they stay in that lake their entire lives?"

She didn't take her eyes from the window though, watching the plants sway with the currents. "Surely they have to, like, evaluate the danger, or whatever, otherwise they'd have to get rid of them." How many students - kids, really - had snuck into the Forest and returned unscathed?
An underwater Quidditch equivalent made Felicity smile, and she turned back to Slate. "Maybe they have really heavy chess pieces, and have to play in a cave." You know, so that the tide didn't knock them over, and they didn't float away? As for travel, she mused over it, fiddling with the end of her hair. "I can't imagine they do... I mean, the lake doesn't seem so big. It would almost be like staying in the castle forever."

| Open post! Come play with us! Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede! On a quiet sunday morning in march Laurel made her way down after breakfast to see her snakes. Usually her daily visits had a serious purpose since she was their head of house. Today though she went down to sit and read a good book, possibly chat amicably and look at the lake inhabitants. If she were in luck she might get to see some mermen, the giant squid and some sea turtles.
Heading over to the large glass windows Professor Vance got herself a blanket, and a cup of freshly brewed tea from the beverage maker and sat down on the divan. After wrapping the blanket around her legs she turned to look through the glass as she TAP TAP tapped at it with a finger. She really wanted to see a sea turtle live.

With her birthday crown on Zita was ready for the day. Boys, who needed boys to give you attention when you had a castle full of staff and girls around. The crown showed it all really, she deserved the attention today. Before she could even leave the common room though she noticed her head of house.
Oh good her first attention person! "Good Morning Professor, what brings you in here this morning?"
She wouldn't come right out and say it, but anyone who looked at her face could not possibly ignore the shining crown that she had charmed to change from pink to purple in flashing lights.

After a while with no sign of any sea creatures turtles or otherwise she pulled out the romance novel that Imogen had practically forced on her since she had attached it to her latest letter.
Opening the book, Laurel started to read. She hadn't been reading very long and had just finished the first chapter when a voice cut into her reading zone. Looking up from the book Laurel first took in the crown and then the girl sporting it. Smiling warmly she said "Good morning Zita! I thought I'd come down and see if I could catch a glimpse of a sea turtle. Have you ever seen a sea turtle?" Gesturing to the crown on the girl's head she beamed. "Happy Birthday Zita! You've turned 15 years old now right?"

"Yes, fifteen today mam, it's a fabulous day to turn fifteen and I'm in the best moods, see." She held out her hands so the professor could see her mood nail polish, one she had been using since their class. "So just here to read mam or were you having a house meeting or something. I see we are doing amazing in points, though I wouldn't think we would do anything but amazing. We are the best in all." There was no stopping Slytherin. " What are you reading?" Z did like novels so she was curious what the divination professor would enjoy reading in her free time.

Beaming broadly at Zita as she sat down near her on the ottoman, Laurel put the bookmark into her book before closing it. Focusing her full attention on Zita she grinned "I can really see that you're happy. Have you eaten any birthday cake yet?" Noting the mood polish glittering on the snakette's nails made Laurel's grin broaden more if possible. "You will undoubtedly have an amazing turning 15 years old day. Have your friends congratulated you over breakfast?" They didn't have a birthday calendar in the Slytherin common room but maybe they should have? Something to consider.
Smiling she asked with a wink "Can't I just come down and visit you guys without a reason more than just to hang out with you guys? But I do admit that we are doing amazingly in the point race! I am so proud of all my snakes."
Letting her gaze drop to the book in her lap Laurel said wondering if she would start gossip. "I'm reading a muggle romance novel called the Ireland trilogy."

How could you not be happy on your own birthday? Though the woman's question made her laugh, "Professor it's too early for cake, I haven't even been down for breakfast yet." She was not going to eat cake before she had some healthy things and a cup of tea. Speaking of her tea she set her bag down and pulled out her mug lifting her wand she warmed it up. "Would you like some? It's my father's best kind." Valla tea was, of course, the best no matter what kind. She didn't answer the friend comment since she just said she hadn't had breakfast yet. "Well I guess you can, but isn't it a bit boring coming to hang with teenagers? I mean wouldn't you rather be with adults?" She didn't even want to spend time with over half the people around here, especially the annoying younger ones, let alone think about spending time with them when she was an adult, but she didn't ever think of her self-going into teaching either, probably good reasons for that. "With my help of course." brushing her hair behind her shoulder and grinning, she knew she was helping with those points. "I love romance novels. I just finished The tale of two curses the other day. It was sooooo good." She hadn't even read a muggle novel though.

No child that she knew said no to eating cake at any hour of day except Zita apparently. "Whatever you say Zita, so what are you going to eat for breakfast aside from tea?" Did she eat something special like pancakes or something?
Nodding Laurel rummaged around in her many pockets on her staff robes until she pulled out a floral cup that she held out to Zita. "I would love to try some Valla tea." If it was the best tea in the world remained to been tasted. Shaking her head Laurel explained. "No it's not boring to hang with you teenagers it's quite fun. I spend a lot of time with the other adults so I get my fill of that too." Sometimes though it was easier to hang with the teens then with the adults since it often got complicated and so on.
