Default The Great Lake

Banner credit: Suziella

Located just south of the castle is a large body of water known as the Great Lake or the Black Lake. This is where the first years encounter the school for the first time when the Groundskeeper takes them there by boat. After seven years they will leave the castle, their individual house and their home behind as they sail back across the Great Lake to embark on new adventures.

If you decide to dip your toes in the water, be careful of the many magical creatures inhibiting the lake that might mistake a little student’s toe for a tasty treat. For in the Great Lake lives everything from merpeople to grindylows. Bartholomew Henry, the Giant Squid, however is not interested in nibbling on toes, but would much rather have someone tickle his tentacles while he soaks up some sun.

Why don’t you follow his lead and do the same? Do some homework in the sun heated grass, take that well deserved nap before Ancient Runes or catch up on that reading. Enjoy your time at the Great Lake!

"Of course, you are the sole reason that I have not yet gone to the library to make sure I am at least up to third year content," she teased lightly, although. His company was good, and it was a pretty good excuse to not bother.

"It was going frizzy," Shera said with a shrug, knowing that that was what the curls would do immediately. And then she'd need a potion to get them back under control. "Ummm..."

Shera lifted her arms out of the water to check for goosebumps or for the beginnings of her nails starting to turn a purple colour. Finding evidence of goosebumps starting to form, she gave Daehyun a sheepish smile as she shrugged. "Maybe a little bit?" With that in mind she moved to sit next to him, feet still dangling in the water as she had her towel wrapped around her shoulders. "It has a heating charm on it, compliments of my mother," she explained, in case he noticed the towel had already dried and was weirdly, but very comfortably, warm.

"I like to imagine witches and wizards in Ancient Greece had salamanders... just because they always kept the fire burning in their cities... I don't know whether or not they did though..." somehow she'd never done research, maybe she didn't want the image she imagined in her mind to be proven wrong.

Threstrals. She nodded understandingly, before figuring that she might as well explain what they looked like considering Daehyun would appreciate it. Considering they were the only creatures that she had experience with, that he wouldn't have experience with. "The pictures you see in books don't do them justice... like yeah.... they look like a bony reptilian winged horse, but they're so much more majestic than that. They're easily my favourite creatures, we have a bunch of them on the manor in America, I'm pretty sure they've been there forever. I remember mum and dad taking me out to help feed them before I could see them..."

Oooooh... but then she should probably clarify. Considering there was a very good reason he didn't want to be able to see them. "My granddad passed away in St Mungos when I was still young, I was there when it happened but I can't remember."

"Well... I don't know what I'd want..." after all, she didn't own the threstrals but they were around which was amazing. Because they were choosing to be with them. And she had a cat and owl of her own...
There it was!

Daehyun was happy to see Shera back to her old, smiling self, because his experience with sulking or upset females was very limited, and he wasn't sure how much good he could do before ending up being the reason they were more upset. Her admission had made him laugh in turn. "Is that sarcasm I sense?" he grinned, no longer able to keep a straight face.

He was about to comment that her hair looked just fine, but his eyes had soon landed on the goosebumps on her arms. Despite her explanation of the towel with a heating charm cast on it, he moved to drape his robe around her frame and pull the hood over her drenched hair, uncaring if his robe soaked up the water - he had a spare or two. Examining his work with a satisfied grin, he said, "Much better," before dropping to sit next to her.

"That's something I've never considered," he said, his mouth slightly open in thought. "Do you like history?" He'd never been too familiar with muggle history, but he'd done his fair share of reading before coming to Hogwarts. Like having memorised Hogwarts, A History inside out. And maybe had a peak in the first year History of Magic textbook.

Daehyun could only blink in surprise when she'd gone off describing thestrals to him. "Oh, you-you see them." Which meant she'd seen death, and was there ever a right thing to say in those situations? He nodded in understanding when she'd explained that she didn't remember, deciding to focus on a happier subject. "Are they gentle?" As much as he loved books, he knew he couldn't fully trust them, especially since they'd been written from the author's point of view, and his own might differ - and it usually did.

When she'd said she wasn't sure what creature she wanted, he tilted his head to the side as he looked at her. "You'd be good for an Augurey," he decided with a nod. "I'm sure you could cheer one up." He wanted one of those, too, though he wasn't sure if he could listen to their wails without his heart breaking. But Shera seemed like a bubble of sunshine when she wasn't sleep deprieved, so to him it looked like a good match.

"Maybe, maybe not," she sing-songed, deciding to keep him on his toes. Well, it didn't really mean all that much, considering she figured that her willingly spending time with him was a pretty good indication that she did enjoy his company.

And there was suddenly a robe over her, the hood pulled over her head as well. It felt quite warm as well, which was even more cozy than just the towel hanging around her. "Thanks," she said brightly, reaching a hand up to shift the hood a little bit higher on her head so it wouldn't obscure her eyes. She would've said more, but didn't know what to say.

"I think it's interesting to see how far we've come and how much has changed," she responded brightly, so yes, she supposed that she did enjoy history. Then she thought about how that interested had developed, and shook her head with a grin on her face. "You know, it was the history of Quidditch that got me interested in seeing changes over time..."

It probably wouldn't surprise Daehyun all that much.

"The ones at the manor are very general, but we've been feeding them for generations... they're really good with my brother too, especially considering he's usually a bit rough because he runs straight into them if you don't keep an eye on him..." she laughed at the memory of seeing the little three year old run straight into adult threstrals, knocking himself over as the creatures them moved carefully to check that he was alright and even help him up. Or how careful they were when accepting food from anyone's hand. "I'm not sure if they'd be as friendly if they're not used to people... but that's just because I imagine they'd be more... cautious?"

"An Augurey? I don't think I've ever heard of them..." she admitted, tilting her head curiously and waiting for Daehyun to explain them in more detail.

Was she trying to tease him? Because it was working.

Suddenly getting flustered, he'd decided to let it go, unsure of what to say. Partly he was also avoiding a straight answer, because he didn't want to hear that she'd been spending time with him out of courtesy, but then he'd soon brightened up when Shera hadn't complained about the robe he'd draped over her, and smiled back as she adjusted the hood that he'd sloppily pulled up.

Agreeing with her point of view, Daehyun hummed lightly in response to her words as he listened attentively, his eyebrows once again disappearing behind his hair as they lifted in interest when she'd mentioned it had all started with Quidditch. Soon frowning when realization kicked in, he said, "Now that you mention it, I've never thought about when and how Quidditch actually came to be." She didn't need to know that he had a copy of Quidditch Through the Ages at home, but skipped straight to the rules and his favourite team.

"I'd say so, too," he agreed that thestrals would be cautious with strangers, but he was still looking forward to meeting and befriending one, and as eager as he was to see them, he also wasn't due to the means to see them. "Is he your only brother?" he asked as she'd mentioned what sounded to him like a younger brother, but he wasn't too sure.

"Augureys are birds that need a lot of love, if you ask me," he said with a smile. "They're just-sad, and wailing whenever rain is approaching." Would be helpful to have one, instead of having to look at the weather forecast. "Since you're the polar opposite, I'd say you'd be good with one. Unless it makes you sad-then I forbid it," he joked, but he was serious as well. It was probably her brightness that he liked the most about her, so he wasn't going to let anything change it if he could help it.

"Well Quidditch has a really long history, but it's existed in it's current form for hundreds of years already! So it's not really surprising that people don't really think about the fact that it has previously changed," Shera began really excitedly. "I mean it's probably inspired by like 5 different ancient games and the oldest form of what you'd consider Quidditch was recorded in 1050 in Queerditch Marsh... you know that's where it got it's name from? Except back then it was on broomsticks that were more like trees and tress were also what was used for scoring purposes... and you're probably not interested in any of this..."

She finished as she realised she had started rambling, far too excited about the topic. Shera needed to chill. But especially with Quidditch, that was hard to do. No matter how tired, it always made her perk up and she was energetic and ready to go.

"When you come over you should meet the threstrals, you might not be able to see them but you'll still be able to get to know them. Like I said my brother knows them all even though he can't see them," and then Daehyun would still experience how gentle the threstrals could be.

"Yep, it's just the two of us," she smiled at the thought of her brother, who was definitely a cutie and he was the main thing she missed about being at home. "Although, we're really close with our cousins as well."

And none of them were considering going to Hogwarts like she had.

These Augureys sounded like interesting animals. She couldn't help but laugh at his joking that he would forbid her from having a creature like that. "My parents always joke that it would be impossible for me to be sad." Shera wasn't sure if that was actually true, but she couldn't remember ever being sad...

Daehyun had kept quiet as he watched a very enthusiastic Shera tell him things that she probably considered common knowledge, given how passionate she was about Quidditch, and he loved witnessing that. He meekly shook his head when she'd asked if he knew of Quee-something, doing his best to keep up with the huge amount of information she'd dropped on him in one breath. He laughed when she'd finished off declaring that he was likely disinterested, because it couldn't have been farther from the truth.

"It's nice to see you so passionate, so feel free to talk my ears off about it." Although he wasn't nearly as passionate about it as she was - his level of enthusiasm when it came to Quidditch was more along the lines of didn't-mind-watching-a-match, and would soon turn to excited-to-watch-Shera-play - he enjoyed listening to facts he'd never known about. "They used trees, you say? Surely they must have carved them to some extent, right?" Because the way he was currently imagined it, it looked very barbaric.

Meet her thestrals? "You don't have to ask me twice!" He would likely be somewhat nervous to meet the creatures that were invisible to him, but he was excited anyway.

Her smile was awfully contagious as she spoke about her family, a grin soon spreading across Daehyun's lips as well. "I'm pretty sure mother is thankful at this point that she's only got me, with all the strays I've been bringing in along the years." There had been a time when he'd wondered if she'd kick him out if he brought another bird whose broken wing she needed to nurse back to health, but he'd soon learned the basics himself.

"Good," he smiled at the comment her parents had made. "Stay that way." Because her happiness was priceless and contagious. He felt the tips of his ears heat up slightly at the thought, thankful that his hair had grown just enough to brush over them.

Despite his response, Shera was still pretty sure that she would completely bore Daehyun if she went on too much more. So she tried her hardest to keep focussed on the tree like broomsticks of the past as she tried to explain them to the best of her ability. "From what I read they used small trees as broomsticks, cutting off some of the branches if they were too wide. Or they could use a large branch that still had others coming off of it but that was rarer. They didn't invent the cushioning charm that is now on broomsticks until about the early 1800s, so it wouldn't have been comfortable to ride a broom until then."

And despite her attempts that had once again taken a slight tangent and she had gone off rambling again. And then because she was thinking of brooms, it went off on a new tangent as she blurted out, "Mum and dad have said if I get on the Quidditch team this year they're going to go with me to buy a new broom for next year!"

That was only one of the reasons that she really wanted to get on the Quidditch team. The other was she just wanted to play Quidditch.

Shera laughed at the thought of his parents being happy that they only had him. "Mum and dad were happy just having me, they say I was a handful of a baby. They only had my brother three years ago," she told him. Then she decided to go on to lightly tease, "Although we bring home significantly fewer strays than you do..."

And before the took that the wrong way, she should probably address that. "It's a good thing that you do though, it shows that you're very... caring," that adjective was probably the best. Though that wasn't the only thing that showed that trait. The robe currently resting on her was also evidence of his kindness.

Stay that way? Well it showed that he liked her the way she was at least, which made her smile brightly at him. "That shouldn't be too hard."

As Shera had once again gone off into detailed explanations, Daehyun could only purse his lips to keep his grin at bay while paying attention to her words. "I'm no expert on the dynamics of all this, but surely those broomsticks," he made air quotes with his fingers for emphasis, "couldn't have cut through air too fast?" He supposed the current design helped a little. "Ow," he commented with a flinch, thinking about the discomfort Quidditch players must have felt before the cushioning charm.

His eyebrows went up at her declaration. "You'd better make it on the team, then," he grinned. "A new broomstick and your own fanbase," founder and sole member of which was sitting right next to her, "you're basically a pro already!" Maybe she would even follow that path after graduating. "Have you thought of a model you'd like?" Not like he would know anything aside from what he'd briefly spotted in the displays on Diagon Alley, but he liked seeing her so passionate about something.

He hummed in acknowledgement when she'd mentioned her brother was, in fact, a toddler, deciding it wasn't the right moment to share that, while he was great with infant creatures and loved nurturing them, the same didn't apply to small kids, nor was he particularly fond of them. He hoped he would take that fact to the grave with him.

At her following statement, however, he looked at her with a cat-just-ate-the-canary grin. "What do I do now that you've found my greatest weakness?" he asked with a laugh, his cheeks reddening.

Shera nodded in agreement with Daehyun's comment. "No they would've been really slow, but all brooms were quite slow and didn't overall improve in speed until the 1900s when a bunch of companies were established to sell broomsticks," back to rambling. Ooops? She had tried. But then Daehyun kept making comments and she couldn't help herself.

"Yeah... I don't think I'd enjoy flying half as much if we were dealing with those kind of broomsticks..." Daehyun's ouch didn't really cover it. But... Shera had nothing better to be able to describe that, besides pulling a face as she tried to imagine the discomfort of a broom without a cushioning charm.

She giggled the moment that he had commented about her fanbase of one. It still amused her to no end how enthusiastic it was. At least she knew if she got on the team there would be one friendly face she knew that would always be cheering her on. But basically a pro? She shook her head shyly. "Maybe one day... but I'm really far away from that at the moment."

First step was still getting on the quidditch team. "Bluebottle C," she responded quickly. She didn't need time to think about it. "It's the newest and fastest model you can get at the moment."

And speed was always good in Quidditch. Or just for her own fun.

Daehyun was blushing again, and what was this about her being his greatest weakness? "My personality is your greatest weakest?" she asked, half teasingly, the boy across from her. She wasn't sure how else to respond. The entire thought of that was just mind boggling.

Shera sure knew everything there was about Quidditch, and it impressed Daehyun to no end. "It couldn't have been too exciting to watch back then." He loved the speed of the current games, though if he thought about it... "But I suppose it was easier to follow a match," he laughed, remembering the cultural shock he'd had when he'd watched his first Quidditch match and didn't know which way to look.

I doubt, he thought when she'd said she was far from being a pro, but decided not voice his thoughts when she'd become shy all of a sudden. "Would you like to play for good after graduation?" he asked instead - the ickle firstie who was already thinking about graduation.

His eyes widened when he'd gotten an answer before he even finished asking what broomstick she'd like to have. The girl sure knew what she wanted. "I'll be keeping my fingers crossed during try-outs!" Not that she needed to channel his good luck, he was sure she would make it on the team.

...

...

WHAT HAS HE DONE?!

Did he have absolutely no filter?!

His mouth wide open, he looked at her with wide eyes as he was slowly processing what was happening. He'd meant to say that creatures were his biggest weakness, but then he remembered complimenting her bright personality and couldn't blame her for making that out of what he'd said, and even more so, he couldn't even deny what she'd said because it was also very much true.

"I-err-" Incapable of forming any coherent words, his face turning into the deepest shade of red, the only thing that had crossed his mind to do was to bury his face in the knees that he'd pulled up to his chest. "Please don't run away." It would've also been nice if he had the robe she was currently wearing to bury himself in it.

"Well... they wouldn't have known better at the time so I guess it was just as exciting for them at the time as it is for us now?" she said thoughtfully, thinking about how to justify that argument. "I mean, we keep making brooms faster even now... so I'd argue that the international games people flocked to 100 years ago would look boring to us."

"I'd like play professionally if I could," Shera admitted. But it was one of those things that was subject to change and currently, she knew it was nothing more than a dream of hers.

"Step one is still making it onto the house team..." and even if he was also keeping his fingers crossed for her she was nervous, probably mostly because she was the only first year in her house that she knew was trying out.

...

Daehyun looked horrified.

And Shera was feeling the pressure from having created that.

Her own cheeks were burning just as hot, and she knew she had probably turned the brightest shade of red she had ever been in her life. She was still silent and mildly horrified at how this turned out as she watched the boy just curl up and bury his face in his legs. It was only his quiet mumble that had gotten her to realise that she should probably do something. Opening her mouth she tried to respond but couldn't find the words.

"I..." she couldn't find the rest of that sentence, cutting off for a moment before she tried to go on again. "I'm not going to run away... I mean.... you... you're my friend... and I also really like your personality..."

She was not going to make it even by calling it her greatest weakness. But admitting that she did enjoy his company and his personality might help him feel a little bit better. Cautiously, she moved her hand to rest on his shoulder. But... she hesitated.

What did one do in this situation? She decided to commit and rest her hand on his shoulder like she had seen others do. It was a comforting gesture, right?

"Ah," he hummed, agreeing with her point. "You're right, it must've been just as exciting back then." And once again Shera was right - he would soon lose count of the times she'd been right and he hadn't, but he was also surprised that he didn't mind it. She was only proving him the golden rule - that women were always right. He knew better than to argue with that.

"You're already halfway there," he said, referring to both her playing professionally and making it onto the House team. Wishing and determination were the first steps. "And now you've also got a great motivator." He was clearly talking about the sight of him with his face painted in blue and fluttering his pom-poms in the air, not the coolest broomstick in the history of broomsticks.

... he had broken Shera.

It was something quite natural to see a flustered, stuttering Daehyun, but he was internally crying when he'd heard Shera - always perfectly composed Shera - barely form a coherent sentence, and for some reason, he hadn't scared her away yet. Her words only made him turn redder, though his face was still hidden in his knees. "I'm really sorry," he said, his words muffled as his face was buried. "I would hide in this lake right now if I knew how to swim." Or maybe he could do it, anyway, if it meant escaping that horrifying situation.

At a loss for words when he'd felt a light and hesitant touch on his shoulder, he looked up to meet her face that was just as red as his. "Do you think we could exchange your flying lessons for human interactions for dummies?" It would surely benefit him more. "I-I'm really sorry-can we please forget what I said-I mean-" Oh, boy, what was he doing... "Not-not to forget it like it's not true, but-" He buried his face back in his knees. "I'll just shut up now."

... by far the best decision he'd made all day.

She giggled again at her official first supporter, and the beginnings of her 'fanbase'. "Thank you for your support," and for the first time she felt completely confident that she did have the support and capacity to improve as a player while attending Hogwarts. That she didn't make a mistake in not going to the Luxembourg Quidditch Academy instead because she also wanted to have the back up of good academics.

"Do you know what you want to do when you finish school? Are you going to work with creatures?" because that was what he was passionate about and it would probably be good for him to do something he loved.

He was still curled up in a ball in front of her.

Shera didn't know how to fix this. Especially with his barely audible mumblings, she decided not to bring up him being unable to swim. That was going to be a topic for another day. And he briefly looked up before burying himself back in his legs.

...

She needed to fix this. She needed to fix this now because she wasn't going to leave him like this. "No," she said as firmly as she could muster, hoping that it would shock him back into going to normal. "You are my friend and you are not going to shut up. I like talking to you."

Shera was still blushing lightly, but she wasn't going to take him disagreeing. She was fine with him. And her was her friend. And he had to be ok with her. Because she was not going to stop a friendship because he liked her personality.

What kind of basis was that for ending a friendship?

What was he going to do after Hogwarts?

"Magizoologist?" he said shyly, picking at his nails nervously as he did so. "Or-or maybe specialize in something more specific?" Though who was he kidding, he couldn't pick a favourite creature to specialize in, he wanted to know everything about each of them. "But it's not exactly what my family had in mind for me." He would cross that bridge when the time came.

Daehyun then understood ostriches. He wished the ground below them were soft enough for him to bury at least his head in, or maybe in the nearest bush, because he would soon die of embarrassment. He needed to find a way to filter everything that came out of his mouth, or stop speaking altogether - though there was Shera next to him saying something about liking to talk to him.

Finally looking back up at her, he tried to act as though his face wasn't redder than a tomato, and let out a soft laugh. "About those lessons on human interaction, I have a free period tomorrow morning." GRIN.

"That'd be really cool! I think you'd be really good at that!" she encouraged, trying to be as cheerful about it as she could, though she did look at him in confusion at the next words he spoke. "What did they have in mind? Although... I suppose that doesn't really matter! What matters is that you enjoy what you're doing!"

Then she was laughing at his comment about human interaction lessons.

"I'm sure I can figure something out for those lessons," she responded jokingly. After all, any time that they spent together was technically learning about human interactions?

Although... Shera wasn't sure she classified as a normal person to learn how to interact with.

Daehyun couldn't contain the smile at Shera's excitement, already feeling better about it. "They'd like a nice, safe desk job at the Ministry, but-" he shook his head. "That's just not me." Not like he was planning on becoming a dragon whisperer of some sort, but he did want to explore all the wonders that were out there, and with that came the misunderstood creatures, too.

"You're right," he agreed to her saying that it only mattered that he did what he enjoyed. "But some support never hurts, you know?" Though, like she said, it was likely that he was going to go with it anyway.

Smiling in response to her comment, an idea had struck him. "Hey, Shera? Want to go to the infirmary?" Or maybe later, after she dried herself off before she caught a cold?

Hugging infant creatures would fix the mess he'd started. Hugging infant creatures could bring world peace.

"Desk jobs are overrated," Shera joked, a grin on her face. They made quite a pair didn't they? A future quidditch player and future magizoologist if they managed to get their ways. "Well you're my fanbase of one, and I am your fanbase of one."

Because he was saying that support was good. And she could definitely support him becoming a magizoologist because that'd be cool!

"Sounds great!" she immediately got to her feet before remembering that she was barefoot, wearing swimmers and only wrapped in a towel. "Ummm... I'll run up to the tower and meet you there? Oh, and do you want your robe back?"

It had taken her a while to realise that she was indeed still wrapped up in Daehyun's now damp robe, having gotten used to it's weight on her shoulders.

"Exactly!" He was happy someone was seeing things his way, for a change. And she was his fanbase of one? "I get a fanbase, too?" Whatever for, was beyond him, but he would accept it gladly. "Awesome!"

Daehyun laughed when she stood up, determined to leave in her swimsuit, only then seeming to realize what she wore. Standing up with a nod, he said, "Keep it on for now, I don't want you to get sick." He shook his head with a laugh at the thought of the girl who'd come all the way from the Ravenclaw tower to the lake in only a towel. "I'll meet you there." He was probably going to hang around the lake a little longer, since he didn't feel like walking back all the way to the Gryffindor common room and back again.

"Of course you do. For your research and studies as a magizoologist, and of course to make sure you know that you also are supported in choosing what you want to do!" Shera explained excitedly.

And she was allowed to keep the robe on her way up? Awesome! "I'll be there as quick as I can be," she would've give a timeframe but between moving stair cases and running all the way up to Ravenclaw tower before running all the way back down, she knew that she couldn't be sure how long she would end up taking.

That in mind, she turned around and, pulling the robe close to her body, bolted towards the castle. It would be interesting to see how far she could maintain a run.

A 'paint me like one of your French girls' moment? Liss almost giggled at the thought, and it changed the expression on her face to one of an actual smile, and she settled more comfortably on the ground. After all, Hattie was one of her best friends - if she couldn't be happy and comfortable around her... But Liss wouldn't think about that. She was happy and comfortable around her, and so the fiddling with her hair stopped.
Hattie adored painting. It was her favourite thing in the entire world to do. The blonde smiled to herself as she painted. She could literally sit here forever and just paint. Hopefully it wouldn't take too long, since she was pretty sure that Felicity wouldn't want to sit there for that long. She hadn't modelled for a painting before, so she had no idea what it felt like, but she figured that it must have been quite boring. So she'd try and be as quick as she could. But she wanted it to be good, so she couldn't rush.

"Oh No. You're perfect" And that wasn't a lie. She was in a great position, and Hattie was happy with that. She could sense that her friend was relaxing a little, and that made her happy. She hated that Felicity might not have been comfortable, or if she felt she'd been pushed into doing the painting. She looked up, and beamed. Yep. Hattie was a happy girl right now.

That would give her the best place to be talking to both Daehyun and Bartholomew.

Although her curls were going frizzy now that they were starting to dry. With that in thought she dropped her head forward to wet her hair again.

"It is really nice," she agreed with the squid. "It's really nice to meet you Bartholomew, I'm Shera." Because she was definitely going to be around long into the future, just because the lake gave her a place to swim.

"Have you been in this lake all of your life?"

He knew exactly how Bartholomew felt about his full name and the unwanted variations, Aaron soon coming to mind, and his preference of calling him Danny. He shuddered only at the thought of it.

"Very," he answered the squid's question. "May we visit you when we come down here for classes?" He really wanted to be friends with such a kind squid, and he imagined it wouldn't take long to drop by after Care of Magical Creatures or Herbology before the following class started. Besides, it was one of the most exciting things that had ever happened in his life.
"What is your name? Do you prefer nicknames?'' Bartholomew enjoyed a good conversation with students. There were lots of knowledge that could be passed about even if it were about the habits of individuals. "You definitely may. If you don't see me here you can call for me. When anyone does that and I'm nearby I come on right over.'' Bartholomew continued to absently splash water with his tentacles while speaking to the young man.

Bartholomew now had company in the form of the girl. The Squid let out a sound that would have been a laugh. "Your hair is all drenched, Shera. It's nice to meet you.'' Bartholomew held out a tentacle for her to shake. "Oh yes I have. I've seen many a generation of Hogwartians. Is this your first year? I don't recall seeing either of you before.''

OOC: Can we pretend they've met Bartholomew on a different day, since they've already left?

"My name is Daehyun," he said, inclining his head a little in greeting. "Or you could call me Daniel, if you prefer. But like you, I'm not very fond of nicknames." He did go by Daniel to avoid people butchering his name in the worst ways possible, but maybe Bartholomew knew his pain, since he supposed people had done the same with his name in the past. "It's a pleasure to meet you!" It felt a little surreal to befriend a talking, gentle, giant squid, but awesome nevertheless.

"Will do!" He would surely find Bartholomew often, because he seemed like he'd be a pleasant company. "Do you have any friends in the water with you when there's no one to talk to out here?" he asked, a smile spreading across his lips as he watched the squid splash water about with his tentacles. There was something endearing about it.

Oh Merlin. This was the worst.

"Oh, uh, hey there...Mister Head Boy," she said with a chuckle, smiling jokingly as she referred to him by that title to try and lighten the mood. Hopefully he wouldn't think she was being weird.
Scarlett was looking at him. With that face. A face that says something truly horrifying has entered her field of vision.

His blue-green eyes widened in alarm, and instinctively started to feel around his face and his head, looking over his entire person "Wh-What is it? Is there some weird growth now? Something missing? Gaaaasp what's missing???"

Bizarre week has turned him batty apparently.

Shera did not need to hesitate to reach over and shake the Giant Squid's tentacles. She giggled along with the giant squid about her hair being drenched but... "Better drenched than frizzy?" she questioned brightly.

"That's really amazing! Do you know roughly how old you are?" she was way too excited to really consider that it might be rude to ask him that. But he had said he had been around for many generations of students... "Yes, we're both first years!"

Alessandro was very sweaty.

He was slowly working his way through some combat exercises. A little bit every day. And the level of intensity was a lot for his willowy, eleven year old frame. It was even more intense due to his utter lack of stamina, common to all children his age.

But he wanted to be more than other children his age.

So even though his body ached and screamed for him to stop, he pushed through and did the next set of exercises.

Watching Hattie's paintbrush stroke the canvas, Felicity held in the sigh of jealousy that threatened to rise. Her friend was ridiculously talented - all her friends were, in some way or another, and sometimes she got very jealous that she didn't have a particular thing that she was good at.

Except for sucking and sulking about it. Which, she reminded herself, was exactly what she wasn't supposed to be doing right then. Forcing her smile back onto her face, and hoping that Hattie hadn't noticed it slip whilst she'd been busy looking at her canvas, Felicity found the corner of her mouth actually twitching up into a bigger smile.

"Don't be silly, I'm far from perfect." But the sentiment, in itself, was super sweet. "But if you want to make me look like a supermodel, I won't complain."
