As you walk along the fifth-floor corridor and pass by a statue of a man with his gloves on the wrong hands, you see a series of identical-looking doors. The fourth door to the left of the statue looks no different from the rest. However, those that try it will find that they cannot open the door. A simple Alohomora will not make the door budge, so carry on with the rest of your day ... unless you happen to know the password, of course.

Only prefects and Quidditch captains know the password (Poo-Pourri) to get this door to creak open and reveal a shiny marble-floored bathroom. Toilet stalls and a shelf containing towels and swimwear take up one side of the room whereas the other contains a set of couches, a coffee table, and a wizarding wireless. Many, however, often find themselves heading straight for the enormous, swimming pool-like tub in the centre of the room. The large tub fills up remarkably fast due to the many taps surrounding it. If you plan on staying here for a while, you might as well add some bubbles.

Don't mind the portrait of the mermaid -- she just likes showing off and flirting with the boys.

So.....Derf knew that technically this wasn't really allowed. Probably. But also Derf did not see the harm in sharing this so-called privilege with friends. The Hufflepuff had never really been keen on this kind of exclusivity anyway. Especially friends that he had made promises to and, for now at least it was the closest thing he had to getting Natalie to meeting a mermaid.

Sooooooo...here he was. Waiting for Natalie outside the bathroom with his hands slipped into his pockets and rocking back and forth on to his heels.
Aaaaaall the while drumming his hands against his thighs and just generally doing loads of fidgeting.

It had actually been a little surprising to Natalie that Derf had suggested they do this. She sort of saw him as a strict rule-follower and she was pretty sure that the Prefect's bathroom was ONLY for prefects. Regardless... she was excited. Because she was going to meet her first mermaid. Granted, it wasn't a completely REAL mermaid, but at the same time it sort of WAS. As of right now, it was the closest she'd get. And it was cute that he was helping her.

Small footsteps coming down the hall, Natalie found the bathroom by spotting Derf from afar. Beaming excitedly, she approached him and gave him a hug because they were friends and that's what friends do AND she was excited.

"Hi," she said with a smile as she pulled back from the hug.

He, the boy who was forever sneaking his bowtruckle out from the creature nursery - it really was for her own good - among other completely harmless little transgressions. It was not fair to say that he was a rule breaker, but it was also not entirely accurate to say he was a strict rule follower. He was simply, well, he was Derf.

Smiling as she approached, he quickly turned to whisper the password before she was toooooooooo close to be in earshot. Though, in all honesty, he wouldn't really mind just telling her the password to let her in to visit the stained glass mermaid whenever she wanted. But this was sorta a precaution...in case the mermaid acted like Picketta did since, well, he reckoned she was sorta the guard to the bathroom in a way and maaaaaaay only be friendly to prefects and quidditch captains.

The door has just barely popped open at his command when Natalie's arms found there way around him, which meant he was naturally returning the hug and giving her a bit of a squeeze as well. Fine fine fiiiiiiiiiiiiine everythiny was totally fine and normal and nooooooooot awkward at aaaaaaaall because he was NOT thinking about any of that stuff.

Nope nope nope.

"Hey," he grinned back, hand fumbling for the handle behind him and pulling the door open for her proper. "After you."

Then her eyes landed on the mermaid across the room and excitement rose through her like bubbles. She reached for Derf's hand and held it tightly, nervously. Maybe he could, uh.. introduce her? So she knew that she was welcome here? Perhaps? Merlin, she hoped she liked her.

"It's okay to be," he assured her as he gave her a gentle tug forward. "I'm with you though...and...you know...she can't be any worse than Picketta was."

What with the whole ATTACKING Natalie's FACE and stuff.

"Hey Amatheia," he greeted the stained glass. He had kinda sorta just assigned her a name since she couldn't talk, you know? "I brought a friend with me today," he continued, nodding his head towards the Slytherin on his arm. "This is Natalie...and she has really been looking forward to meeting you. Talked you up loads and stuff."

Derf holding her hand always helped Natalie feel safe and less anxious about things. It was a habit that she very much enjoyed. Walking forward with him, she laughed a little when he mentioned Picketta. She liked to think that Picketta didn't hate her as much as she used to.

Natalie looked up at the mermaid with a small smile and waved a little bit with her free hand. "Hi," she said quietly and politely as he continued the introduction.

"I'm really fascinated by mermaids. Er... merpeople." She gave the mermaid a sheepish smile, hoping that she wouldn't somehow say something offensive. "I'm learning mermish, too." And she was getting rather good at it, too, thanks to Derf. Merlin, Derf helped her out with so many things... What would she do without him?

"Hmmmm," sighs and furrows his brow slightly. "Sometimes she needs a few minutes to warm up to the presence of visitors....though sometimes she just waits for the tub to fill. Connection to mermaids and water, I reckon."

Glancing up at the stained glass window again, Derf gave Natalie's hand a tug towards the main tap and used his free hand to twist it on. As soon as he did so, the others began spouting warm water into the massive tub.

Nervously watching and waiting, Natalie felt a little nervous knot forming in her stomach. What if her first mermaid experience didn't go well? What if she hated her and then she somehow told all the other mermaids that Natalie McKinley was AWFUL??? She might give up her dream of mermaids after that.

Derf's words helped her though. She hoped he was right.

"She won't," he said confidently with a small smile. "Besides, what's there not to like about you?" Other than, you know, technically she was not one of the authorized people to be in here...but Derf knew that others had brought guests in here too so...the mermaid ought to be used to it by now. "Hmmm...you wanna go for a swim since we're here?" he asked, already moving to shrug his robes off.

While Natalie appreciated Derf's constant votes of confidence, Natalie was less optimistic. Derf's middle name was Optimism. Natalie worried more than he did, especially about what people (in this case mermaids) thought about her. "I think you're a little biased," she told him truthfully. Derf liked her. A lot, it seemed. Natalie could name quite a few things about herself that people may not like about her. But she didn't.

Err, wait, what? Swim? Natalie turned her head back just in time to see Derf taking off his robes. Merlin, he was full of surprises. "Really..?" she asked, skeptically. He wanted to swim? She wasn't even allowed in here! Though, truthfully, a swim sounded nice and it was FAR too cold to take a dip in the lake, so... she was tempted.

But, she obviously didn't wear a swimming suit under her uniform at all times, so... were they swimming fully clothed?

Natalie grinned at Derf before kicking off her shoes and shrugging her outer robes. Then with no more arguments she ran to the stalls, locked herself into one and found a swimsuit that looked the right size. A few moments later, Natalie emerged in a swimsuit with a towel in hand.

"Shoe fits me that I have one...and you have one...so we both have bias...and therefore wear the same shoe size."

Grinning ear to ear, but also shivering because it was cold in there now that she was only in a swimsuit. "You made it warm, right?" Because it was winter after all and bathtubs were supposed to be warm, right? Right. Natalie stepped up to the edge of the tub and peered in.

Grinning even wider, he was about to comment on how her squeak was sorta like a rodent's - in a GOOD way - when he thought the better of it. Rather, when she all of a sudden was now grabbing at his arms and nudging him towards the edge. If he had wanted to he wouldn't have budged at all - not that Natalie was WEAK per say but just he had a surfer's balance AND additional muscle mass now so...he was pretty stable and stuff - but as it were...he didn't mind. The aim was to get into the tub anyway so why fight it, you know?

Chuckling and putting up just a tiiiiiny bit of resistance to humor her, Derf eventually had no where else to go BUT in...and then he did just that with a glorious belly flop that splashed water and bubbles eeeeeeeverywhere.

Rather, when she all of a sudden was now grabbing at his arms and nudging him towards the edge. If he had wanted to he wouldn't have budged at all - not that Natalie was WEAK per say but just he had a surfer's balance AND additional muscle mass now so...he was pretty stable and stuff - but as it were...he didn't mind. The aim was to get into the tub anyway so why fight it, you know?

Chuckling and putting up just a tiiiiiny bit of resistance to humor her, Derf eventually had no where else to go BUT in...and then he did just that with a glorious belly flop that splashed water and bubbles eeeeeeeverywhere.

Oh, no... Natalie WAS weak. Even if Derf didn't have as much muscle as he did, she still probably would have made little difference in his balance. Regardless, she was very glad that he was humoring and only putting up a little fight. She was beaming ear to ear when he let himself fall into the tub of warm, shiny bubbles.

And this WAS the point, Natalie followed him in, but not in belly flop style. "CANON BALL!" she shouted, though he probably couldn't hear her since his head was likely under water. Then she jumped off the edge of the pool and splashed in right next to him, creating a similarly LARGE, bubbly splash.

Now she knew that she could indeed go swimming in the winter time... as long as she asked someone with access to the Prefect's Bathroom.

Pips had a good grip on his ears as he entered the Prefects Bathroom. Pips loves cleaning this bathroom. Not many studentsies come up here, since nones are allowed unless a Prefectsie. Moving an ear Pips looked around, not noticing any studentsies around, time to clean.

The library was ridiculously crowded, something that was typical of this time of year. With OWLs and NEWTs literally right around the corner, it was damn near impossible to get in any bit of quiet reading. Her Common Room and Lab would both have been welcomed reprieves but the Prefect Bathroom was closer and arguably more comfortable with a greatly reduced chance of running into others.

Having uttered the password, the Ravenclaw trudged inside, tossing her things down onto the comfy couch. It was only then that she noticed the elf.

"Oh. Pips." Had she come at a bad time? She didn't want to be in the way if he was trying to get some cleaning done. "I...can come back later...." Or go lock herself in her lab in all honesty. There was no need to walk all the way up there just to come back down.
