It's time for the Hufflepuff team to build on that team spirit, discuss what went wrong and right in the last game and most importantly; figure out how to win another game to finally lift that Quidditch Cup.
The Hufflepuff captain; Isa Wright (griffin), will guide you through this practice.

Luck? Well, Derf appreciated the sentiment really but he was more hoping that the jersey INSPIRED him more than brought him luck. Not that he really wanted to channel Alice and BITE someone. He wasn't about emulating one of his quidditch heroes like that. Still, he beamed at Bel and then listened to the rest of the introductions being offered up. Innocent curiosity...and also to scope out just who was his immediate competition for a Beater spot.
Emmelyn AND Scarlett trying out for Keeper. That would be fun to watch and was, perhaps, one of the downsides to being IN tryouts right now in that he couldn't actually watch his housemates fly around and show off their skills. The little green monster of jealousy for Isa tickled his rib cage a bit, but the fourth year was able to shove it aside and resume his attentive listening. Kimi for Beater...ooooooooh interesting. Derf definitely wanted to give flying and hitting a few bludgers a go with the fifth year. You know, see how their athletic chemistry was together since the two beaters on the pitch NEEDED to be in sync and able to play off each other well. It was crucial to the success of the Beater team AND the team itself!
Adjusting his hold on his broom, Derf swiveled his head around and grinned at Bel. "You're on." IMPISH SMILE INTENSIFYING. Tucking his broom under his arm, Derf took off after Bel - that growth spurt over the summer making his elongated legs efficient in catching up with her. Once he was close enough to the course, Derf rotated his broom in his hands and mounted it, kicking off the ground in his next stride and up into the air he went, grinning like the fool he was.
This. This was one of the BEST feelings.
Performing a few tight zigzags as he rose - just to give his broom a bit of a warm up too - Derf came to a comfortable hover and then glances back at Bel and pulled one of his arms across his chest, pushing in on the elbow a bit to stretch. "This doesn't look too bad," he noted casually as he looked over the obstacle course.

Bel liked running. It wasn't the running in particular, it was feeling her muscles moving, it was that euphoria that came from just going like ham without any particular concern about energy conservation or pacing herself. Just running out of sheer childish joy. Any physical activity felt good that way. Much better than sitting still and stagnating. So she was smiling when they got to the beginning of the obstacle course. She stretched out a little before jumping on her (Cam's) broom and neatly joining Derfael in the air, continuing her stretching as she rose up and up to hover at his side.
And he was right, it DIDN'T look bad. In fact:
"It looks fun!" Okay but just quickly she needed some advice here. "D?" She whispered, "Are we supposed to... you know.... show off, or keep it simple?" She wasn't sure if it was a thing with Quidditch or not, or if people would be judge-y or derisive if you did showboat. Not that she was inclined to do so unless it made sense, but she wasn't completely sure how this thing would be judged. Keep it simple or pull out some tricks? She was about tricks for a purpose and not for the aesthetic but...
how did you know if what you were doing was enough for a team or not?

Derf was mostly working his arms and shoulders, making circles with his shoulders and then with his arms to loosen things up and get the blood pumping and flowing properly in there. He had picked up a book on muggle baseball in a library in London over the summer and while a pitcher and a beater were not exaaaaactly the same, they both needed to use their arms loads so he had taken a keen interested into the suggested stretches there.
Though, mostly, he was just taking in the fresh air. It always felt different, a GOOD different, up in the air.
Which was why he was positively beaming when Bel spoke to him again - while he was in the middle of another set of shoulder circles - and sufficiently distracted in that dog with his head out the muggle automobile window mentality that all he did, initially, was meet his friend with a loud, "Huh?" Though the moment did pass, and quickly. "Both? Though...not showing off as much as...showcasing..." he considered, ruffling his hair a bit and flexing his fingers. "You know...we gotta show what makes us unique on a broom. But maybe just the first time through we keep it simple...second go through we can try to get a little fancy like..." He paused a moment to squint ahead at the course. "Down there looks like it could be a good place for a figure eight move instead of just veering left around that."
Was she ready? Because he was.
"Let's go!"
And then with one lingering grin, he leaned forward on his broom and zoomed forward into the course.

That sounded good to her: the going through it once and then again with a bit more pizzazz. First times were always exhilarating but often lacked finesse, Bel rather thought. She tucked the length of her ponytail down the back of her shirt and finished up her stretches.
As soon as she was done, just after he zoomed ahead, Bel took off after Derf. The tingle of the wind on her face was the best! She leaned into her grip on Cam's broom handle, fingers tightening around the wood. This was where the longer length made a difference. They were of a height but Cam's reach was longer than hers. Whenever she was going to get her own broom it'd need to be a bit shorter, just to better fit her centre of gravity. Still way better than your run-of-the-mill broom though, and Bel was soon finding that sweet spot of moving with the broom instead of fighting it.
Despite his head start, she was soon hot on Derf's tail twigs. Which was, for the moment, where she stayed, flying in his wake to conserve her own energy. Oh and there were rings ahead to fly through!!!

It was no surprise to the fourth year that Bel was catching up and then some. She did have that Seeker build, you know? In addition to his own physique becoming a tad heavier with the addition of arm muscles that he still wasn't quite sure what to do with and some of his favorite shirts now had sleeves that were getting stretched a tiny bit, but nothing too dramatic. Though it did remind him of waaaaay back in their first year when he and Abey had talked about being Seekers. Though that dream had quickly vanished when it clicked that they couldn't BOTH be Seekers at the same time unless they were on opposing teams. And well, since Derf was already idolizing a Beater...it wasn't too difficult to sway him to consider other positions.
Glancing over his shoulder at her, noting that the tip of her broom was all but grazing his tail twigs, he gave a slight nod of his head to the course ahead. "Show 'em what you've got, Bel" he chirped, veering left to perform a bit of a barrel roll to give her additional space to charge forward and not alter her own flight path. While he was briefly upside down, Derf also noticed that Scarlett was also heading towards the obstacle course and gave her a quick wave before returning both his hands to the handle of his broom and resuming his original flight path after completing his aerial circle by sailing through a hoop.
Okay...so maaaaaaaaaybe he was not taking his own advice and adding a bit of pizzazz his first run. BUT...that would sorta make a neat flight formation during a match...

Perfect. Harriet hoped that she would be good. She had some good hand eye coordination. It was kind of needed with her art, and she hoping that it would come across when she got up in the air on her broom. The sixth year did a few warm up stretches. The last thing she wanted was to get a torn or pulled muscle, that would not help her chances of getting onto the team. It only took a few minutes, and then she was getting on the broom. It was only a school broom but she hoping to eventually get one of her own, if she needed it. She only really needed one if the got on the team. She hoped Sky didn't sell it before she knew if she needed one or not.
She got on the broom, and warmed up a little, flying a little, so she could used to flying, and then she flew up to where Daisy was hovering. "let's go" The girl beamed, wanting to get this done before she could move onto the next bit. Concentrating hard, she threw the quaffle in the direction of the central hoop. Hopefully it would go in.

There was so much going on around her that Emmalyn almost forgot why she was waiting. She had completed the obstacle course and was ready to give the keeper station a try. She was, however, greatly enjoying being able to watch the older, more experienced, players and take note of their skills. There were several moves she would need to copy and master.
She wished she would have brought her notebook with her, although she wasn't sure how she would take notes while riding her broom. She hadn't been flying that long and adding in note taking could possibly be more than her balance could handle.
"Would anyone want to play the Chaser position for me while I try my hand at the Keeper position? We could switch when we are finished."

Scarlett got to the obstacle course and then hopped on, bouncing a bit on her toes before taking off. She took a few deep breaths to try and calm her nerves and just relax. This could be fun, and not as scary as she was making it out to be in her mind. Come on Scarlett, you're an ADULT now, you can handle this!
Gripping the handle of her broom tightly, she smirked when she saw Derf and Bel getting warmed up and doing some fancier moves. Nothing TOO fancy, of course, she had never pegged them as show offs - but if they were doing it, she was doing it too. She did a little bit of lazy side to side action before doing a little barrel roll through the first ring she came to. If she was going to be Keeper, she HAD to show off her moves and also show how fast she could accelerate the broom. It made sense - if SHE were captain, she'd been looking for that.
Granted, she didn't have a ton of moves - this was only a broom they were talking about - but she wanted to show that she could do everything everyone else could do, despite her lack of camp experience.

Y'know, Derfael's encouragement was all the permission Bel needed. Though at first she stayed just behind him to conserve energy like birds do in flight, soon enough she peeled off and shot ahead past him, pressing her body closer to the the length of Cam's broom and making herself small and aerodynamic, the air flowing over her as the broom cut through the sky.
Most of the rings were easy to zip through, but the further through the course she got, the more sharp angles and distances were involved in the ring placement and Bel had to compensate for it with a speed drop so she wouldn't lose maneuverability. So a bit slower, but pulling on the broom and moving with it in whichever direction to bank hard for the rings. A couple of them lit up when she flew through the glowing edges instead of swishing straight through the centre of them, so it was easy to see where she'd been precise and where she hadn't quite made it. Reaching the end she banked tightly around the pole and headed back. This time, now that she had the feel of it, she was able to better sacrifice speed for precision and the rings didn't light up.
Her tongue was poking out a bit in concentration. This was hard yakka!

And now that nice older girl Scarlett was hitting the obstacles too. Which was actually kind of good because moving targets, wooo! Bel flew directly at her and then with a gesture to show her intentions, adjusted, pulling down hard to scoot underneath Scarlett with minimal clearance.
Communication was important right?

Daisy swallowed as she moved her broom across all three goal hoops, ensuring she didn't hit anyone else trying out for Keeper and ensuring she was defending all goal hoops. As Hattie threw the Quaffle, Daisy realised she was closer towards the right hoop so she quickly flew to the centre and just managed to catch the Quaffle in her hand. Daisy threw the Quaffle back to Hattie. The Third-Year was upset with herself for nearly letting the Quaffle go through.

Ooh. Nearly! That had to be a good sign right? Well. It gave Harriet a little bit of confidence. She could do this! The blonde was determined to get the quaffle through one of those goals. She was sure if she got a few goals it would totally give her a good chance of getting onto the team. She spent a few seconds thinking of a strategy, before she flew a little bit away from the goals. She'd tried just hovering, but now she was going to fly at the goals. She would see if she stood a better chance of getting a goal that way. It was also how it would work during the games, so she figured that would probably help a little bit.
So the blonde began to fly back towards the goals, this time heading for the left hand side hoop. She concentrated, making it look like she was going to throw the quaffle into that hoop, before she swerved, right at the last second, and threw the quaffle towards the central hoop again.

Daisy needed to up her game so she was flying her broom in the double-eight loop formation in front of the hoops. Her eyes watched Hattie throw the Quaffle. It was obviously heading for the left so Daisy started to move left to catch the quaffle. However, she was wrong as she saw the Quaffle go through the central hoop by millimetres.
"Well done!" Daisy called to Hattie. She trying to hide her disappointment. Had she just lost her chance to be on the team? She also wanted to try for Chaser. "Could you help me with trying out for Chaser?" Daisy asked Hattie.

"Thanks, Hattie," Daisy replied as Hattie complimented her.
Daisy smiled as Hattie called out to Em. If the First-Year was looking for the chance to be Keeper, Daisy didn't mind in the slightest in giving her a chance to practice. Besides, maybe Daisy was more cut out to be Chaser.

Pulling up on his broom when he returned to his previous flight path, Derf instructed his broom to slow down just enough that his present gliding speed was enough to observe the way Bel handled the course and her broom and the grin he wore only grew with each hoop she zoomed through. She was a natural, though part of him had always known that and he wasn't entirely surprised. It was even more exciting to watch as Scarlett entered the coarse as well, seeing how they played off each other even in this capacity and visualizing what COULD be, you know?
Seeing Bel approaching, Derf held out his hand for a high five from the Seeker hopeful.
While he waited, really only a few fleeting seconds considering Bel's speed, Derf's bright blues looked over at the Chasers and Keeper hopefuls nad couldn't help but feel a tiiiiiiiiiiiny tinge of anxiousness seeing Hattie...but she was smiling and looking good working with Daisy and Emmalyn...which...AGAIN...it was neat to watch dynamics now. Though he didn't really let himself stay in that train of thought for TOO long since he still had an obstacle course to get through. THEREFORE, he turned his attention forward again and leaned forward on his broom to pick up speed with his hand still outstretched slightly to meet Bel halfway for an air high-five, zipping through one ring and zig zagging through another.

Emmalyn watched the final shots between Harriet and Daisy. They were both looking well practiced and she felt they had a great chance of making the team. That only revved up Emmalyn's competitive side. She was not going down without a fight and seeing the other Hufflepuffs preforming so well gave her the extra burst in energy she needed to rock her tryouts. "Great job, Harriet! You are doing great as well, Daisy!" she shouted across the field.
Her heart raced with anticipation when Harriet said that Daisy was looking to try her hand at the chaser position. "I'll play keeper for you, Daisy!" Leaning herself forward to get her broom back in motion, Emmalyn zipped across the side of the field and came to a gentle halt by the goals. "Would you like to partner up with me?" She asked Daisy as she eyed Harriet flying off towards the seeker station.
As she watched Harriet fly, she also caught sight of Derf and Bel. "Man, they are fast" she mumbled as she saw how deftly they conquered the obstacle course. She could easily tell they both had experience that their years had afforded them. Even Scarlett was killing the course. Emmalyn suddenly had a strange mixture of determination to beat her housemates and pride in how well they were doing. She knew that no matter who made the team, they would be almost impossible to beat.

Scarlett felt herself grinning now as she was slowly loosening up. She tried not to focus TOO much on the groups that were practicing Keeper and Chaser - it was going to make her nervous for her turn, when it inevitably came up - so she continued to focus on the obstacle course and flying around with Derf and Bel. She watched as Bel swerved under her and then she herself decided to show off with a little figure eight move before swooping through the next hoop.
She wondered how much of this would actually have an impact on Isa's decision. She knew the Keeper bit would likely be the most important part, but she wondered how much weight would be put in to all these little tricks and such.
Best keep doing it, just to be safe!
Coming up on the next ring, she rose higher, higher, and higher...and then in a quick movement, pushed down on the broom so that she was going in to a nose dive, pulling out of the dive JUST in time to swoop RIGHT through the ring. WOW. She hadn't been sure she would be able to do that! She had taken a risk, going a bit faster than normal, and still managed to do the maneuver without missing the ring. With each twist and turn through the obstacle course, she felt better about her chances. She could do this!

With each twist and turn through the obstacle course, she felt better about her chances. She could do this!

Bel looked back behind her after scooting under Scarlett, and watched the older girl pull a really neat figure eight. Wicked! She made a mental note to give that a go later, but for now she had turned her attention forward again, right in time to meet Derfael's high five with her own. And then back to the start of the course.
She was really pumped and raring to go now! Obstacle course done, that meant it was time to hit up a station right? And maybe she'd get to do the obstacle course again too, or maybe the chasing of snitches would lead her through them anyways?
Where was the seeker station? Was there even one? Snitches were hardly likely to stay in a specific zone. Or was it just that she needed to keep her eyes peeled and start hunting? Was there only one snitch? Bel rubbed her gloved hands together and then, gripping her Cam's broom handle, started to fly up in a lazy corkscrew, circling up and around the pitch, eyes peeled.
Heeeeere snitchy snitchy. Hopefully at least one had been released, and she wasn't looking for something that wasn't even there.

This...was probably a bad idea.
It seemed like a good idea earlier. Regina wasn't really a huge fan of Quidditch, so she'd never really played it much, but she didn't hate it or anything either. It was just...a thing, and not one she thought about much since it wasn't around at Hogwarts. But now that it was back and everyone seemed so excited about it...well, maybe she'd been influenced by it. Peer pressure, or something.
Anyway, it had sounded like it would be fun. She had no expectations of being really good, but you didn't have to be good to have fun, right?
Yeah...well...about that...
Now that she was actually here, and she saw all the people that were actually trying out, and a lot of them had their own fancy brooms, and nearly all had some kind of experience and passion for this thing...well, now it seemed less fun and more like she was going to embarrass herself in front of everyone.
Whether that was logical to think or not - and part of her knew she was overreacting and was very frustrated with her mind for it - she couldn't help it.
With wide eyes, she watched everyone and only introduced herself once most everyone had already done so. "Regina Amstern. I don't really have much experience with this, but I'm okay enough at flying.... Chaser is what I'm trying out for, I guess." Seemed like the best option for her, even if her hopes obviously weren't high.
So now it was time to do the actual trying out part... Oh boy.
She mounted her school broom and kicked herself into the air, deciding to do the obstacle course part first...because the actual Quidditch-position-specific stations were intimidating. She wasn't even sure she could do the obstacle course as fast as everyone else anyway, so...focusing on that first. Yes.
Deep breaths, Regina.

Daisy grinned at Em and called out. "Thank you so much!" Daisy started stretching her arms as Em came flying towards her. "I'd love to partner up with you," she said then she flew to where the Quaffles were and got ready. "Ready to go?" Daisy called out to Em.

"Let me get in place." Emmalyn said as she moved to the middle of the goals. She removed her glove and licked one finger before sticking it up in the air. There was a light breeze blowing from the west and she wanted to make sure to take that into account to determine the Quaffles path.
After placing the glove back on her hand, she shouted. "I'm ready! Let's go!" While she waited for Daisy to take her first shot, Emmalyn practiced pivoting quickly to the left and right, elevating and descending, and even a few three hundred and sixty degree revolutions. The old school issued broom was out of date compared to most of the older students more recently purchased, and higher quality brooms. However, she was feeling right at home on it.

Daisy waited for Em to get in position, Quaffle in hand. She was very impressed by the First-Year's flying abilities. Daisy then moved her broom forward and with her right hand threw the Quaffle towards the left goal hoop at quite the speed.

'I can do this' she chanted over and over in her mind, 'Just block the quaffle.' She eyed Daisy setting up her shot. The older girls speed and agility was apparent and Emmlayn knew she would have to take in to account the greater force Daisy's two year older body could impact upon the shot.
The quaffle sped towards her, the wind having little play on the trajectory. As far as she could tell, it was aiming towards the far left goal. Emmalyn quickly adjusted her position on the broom and raced to intercept the quaffle.
"No!" she lamented as her hope of blocking her first ever attempt flew past her and through the goal post. Turning back towards Daisy "Great job! That was a really good shot. Shall we try again?" Emmalyn was going to do better the next shot. She now knew how the oddly shaped quaffle moved through the air and could better anticipate the outcome.

Harriet smiled, glad that Emmalyn wanted to be a keeper. At least now she didn't have to be a keeper. She had a feeling she would be terrible at it, and she really didn't want to try out for that position. She hovered for a few seconds, just watching the girls, before she looked at what station to do next. The blonde figured she may as well go, and get the obstacle course over and done with. It seemed a few of her other house mates had already finished it, so it was totally free for her to go on. That made her feel a little happier, because she knew she had less chance of bumping into people if they weren't on the course in the first place. The sixth year flew over to the start of the obstacle course, and looked at it. She was just working out a plan, so that she wasn't surprised by anything that happened on the obstacle course.
She took a few deep breaths, making sure she was ready to get going. She wanted to make sure that she did well, because she really wanted to get onto the team. A few seconds later, and she started, leaning down onto her broom so she could go at a good speed. And then she began weaving in and out of the obstacles, hoping not to hit anything or anyone.

Yay! She had scored a goal. Daisy was thrilled about that but she did feel sorry for Em. "Thank you. Hey, don't feel bad. The way you fly in front of the goal hoops is amazing! I'm happy to try again."
Daisy psyched herself up and aimed the Quaffle towards the right goal hoop, putting as much strength as she could in her throw.
