| | |  DADA Lesson One - It's Snow Trouble
On a fairly chilly post-breakfast morning of the sixteenth of October, you might find yourself heading towards the first floor for another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. At this point, it might not be surprising to find that the classroom looks rather empty but you don't have to have a keen eye to notice that the classroom is covered in something you wouldn't even find in the castle itself, forget a Defence room.
Snow.
Looking around, you notice that every inch of the floor in the well-lit room is covered in soft, fluffy snow, causing you to leave footprints as you head further inside. There are no signs or explanations as to why that is and there certainly aren't any cushions to suggest that this is the right place to be. Confused? You might be.
Apart from the snow, there's something else in the room that might help to suggest that this is a Defence room. Lifeless and motionless, an array of dummies can be seen standing along the edges of the room instead of their usual spot in some of the other defence rooms. Maybe they could give you an inclination as to what you're going to be doing today?
Those who are observant enough might notice that along with the usual classroom decor, Professor Hirsch seems to be missing as well. Where could the man be and why wasn't he here yet? And, most importantly, did that mean that this was the right room or not?
While you're left pondering - or just enjoying the sight of the snow - come in and make yourselves as comfortable as possible...

It wasn't Daehyun's best morning, as he half-dragged his feet, one in front of the other, on the way to the Defence Against the Dark Arts class. Stifling a yawn, he opened the door to the classroom to find-
... snow.
Lots of it.
Well, he was fully awake now. Looking around confused, he only spotted the dummies, but not professor Hirsch, which only put a frown on his face. He loved snow though, so he couldn't stop himself from leaning down to drag his fingers through the fluffiness, uncaring of the fact that it turned them freezing cold. But then he stood back up and focused again on his surroundings.
Was professor Hirsch going to attack them? Has it been his plan to confuse them with snow and attack while they weren't paying attention?
... he honestly wouldn't be surprised if the man had made himself invisible and was laughing at his confused face. |

Alessandro Toussaint, outside of Herbology, was the most excited about studying Defense Against the Dark Arts. It was a huge point of pride at Durmstrang where all of his cousins went and it followed that Defense Against the Dark Arts also helped with combat training. If Alessandro was going to effectively emulate his older cousins a lot of that work would happen here in this classroom.
Which was why he was near devastated when he toddled in the room and it was snowing and professor-less. He almost turned back to go look for a notice board to see if class had been moved, but then he had a terrible thought that he might miss class and humiliate himself if he left. So he knuckled down on the class and waited.
And waited.
And waited.

That was weird.
The Gryffindor dragged her feet through the snowy precipitant as she made her way further and further into the classroom. This meant one thing and one thing only: They were learning about MOUNTAIN DRAGONS today!!! 'Cause those definitely existed, right? Zoryn wouldn't know cause they haven't had a lesson on them yet. WHICH, by the way, is why having a lesson about them now would be SO necessary. "Are we learning about DRAGONS to--" HUH??? Where was Professor and best friend Roderik Hirsch???
Huh. Guess there's only one thing to do now: SNOW ANGELS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The now fifteen year old Théodore Montmorency was still not a morning person. what made things even worse was he spent most of the morning trying to wake himself up completely and wake one of his dormmates up because they really couldn't afford to miss more classes already in the year.

He was zoning out already and felt something on his shoes as he entered the room.
Snow
Yeah ok he was sure 1. he was not outside and 2. it was nto winter yet. But ok magic school and all yeah sure snow in the DADA classroom. True it was not the weirdest thing he has ever seen in the Castle. But right now his brain was still not really working.
Give it till lunch time then he will be fine.

You know.....there was something to be said about Olivia's excitement for each and every Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. More often then not, she was one of the first to arrive...and just as often, she was the last to leave (outside of Professor Hirsch, himself). Most of her magical success was in thanks to this man, and she was just...... appreciative....mhm, of him. Yeah, that was it. Appreciative. Because that sounded loads better than infatuated. It really did...
Of course, today....there was some serious self-reflection about whether or not she'd walked into a stray Confundus Charm. Snow.... Everywhere, snow. The white stuff covered every surface, and Liv had to wonder if she'd accidentally taken a wrong turn someplace. But surely, that wasn't the case. After six years, she felt more than confident that she knew the castle better than the back of her own hand. Huh. Logic attempted to seep through. Perhaps they would be learning how to protect themselves against yetis. Or...maybe they were going to be going deep into winter survival training. Had she mentioned to Professor Hirsch that she'd perfected his fire whip...?
It was at that moment, that her bright blue eyes finally landed upon the lifeless dummies. Now THAT...looked very promising (and assured her that this was indeed the right place). Suddenly remembering the final IMPS task, Olivia carried herself fully into the room. Yeah, the snow was literally everywhere. Hm, bunching her scarf up more, Liv's hands found there way deeper into her robe pockets. Hirsch was suspiciously absent, but she wasn't at all fooled by his antics. He was lurking somewhere in the room. She just knew it.
"Hello, everyone." The words were friendly enough, but her eyes remained alert, as she continued looking for the older man. "Are you guys having a good week, so far?"

Wide eyed and excited, the first year stepped inti the classroom. Or...at least she thought it was a classroom. There was snow! Snow everywhere! Skyler had to blink several times to adjust to the brightness of the snow. Where was the professor? She decided to talk to someone. Best to make friends early yes? So Skyler turned to the first person she saw, a teenage boy that was a bit older then her. He seemed tired. Huh. Must not be a morning person.
"Hey, I'm Skyler," she gave him the widest of smiles.

"Morning.." Magnolia greeted brightly.
Defense against the dark arts. It was one of the more practical lessons she was taking and a strong contender for her favourite as well. It was neck and neck with Potions. She found that she had a natural knack for that.
The fourth year couldn't put her finger on it, but it came quite easily to her. Anyways, DADA....
The classroom for today's lesson was definitely not what she was expecting. There was a lot of fluffy beautiful snow. Her cheeks flushed with excitement as she looked around the classroom.
Hmmmm...no professor Hirsch...but there were dummies here. Pulling her coat closer, she walked to a corner of the room, kicking the snow a bit as she made her way.

Matt entered the room aaaand truth be told, he was not surprised one bit to see snow there. It was Hogwarts, after all, and he had seen weirder things. MUCH weirder things.
Snow was normal, even though it was summer.
"HELLO!!" He greeted... his classmates that were already there, since the professor himself was nowhere in sight.
The Gryffindor DID see the dummies, though, which made him grin widely and he already got his wand at the ready BECAUSE.
CONSTANT VIGILANCE that's why.

Snow. That was the first thing Ronan noticed when he stepped into the defense classroom. Though it was definitely cold enough for the stuff, he was pretty sure he was still inside the castle, which hadn't lost its roof to the best of his knowledge. So what was up with it covering the floor?
The second thing he noticed was that Professor Hirsch was missing. Or was he? This reminded him of one of his older cousin's favorite games: making herself invisible and doing little things like blowing in people's ears to test their awareness of their surroundings (people usually failed, by the way). The thought put Ronan on full alert for anything that would indicate that the professor was actually in the room. Constant vigilance, right?
"Hey," was his greeting to, as he knew her, the other Olivia. "Eh." He couldn't complain really, aside from his pathetic lack of a love life (even Derfael was getting more attention from the ladies!), but that wasn't really talk for a classroom setting.

Shera was confused. And very cold. Very, very cold. In fact, she was shivering already. What was the point of having snow in a Defence Against the Dark Arts class? And where was her favourite head of house?

And waited. Throughout the previous six years, Callum Kettleburn had walked into a lot of questionable settings inside Hogwarts classrooms, and today was no different. There was snow - unimpressive - and some dummies, but Callum only had eyes for his little cousin, who looked like he was giving this class second thoughts for some reason.
Callum, himself, had left one of his very first Defense Against the Dark Arts classes early when he was a first year - and he still hadn't regretted it one bit - but it was probably in Alessandro's best interest to at least give the class the chance to start. If he still wanted to leave, Callum would probably walk out with him, truth be told, and he could work with his cousin one-on-one. Like tutoring. No big deal.
"Hey," Callum greeted, coming to a halt beside his cousin and giving his hair a fond ruffle. "You good?" He seemed a little squirmy, which was to be expected, really, considering their current setting under the circumstances.
Hirsch just had to go and make a big spectacle of things, didn't he?

Defense was one of those subjects that Skylar had a love-hate relationship with. On one hand, she was willing to work hard at the subject and it was a challenge for, in particular, she seemed to struggle with dueling the predictive aspects of it, compared with some of her peers. Her hard work had evidently paid off with earning herself an Outstanding on her OWL exam, which needless to say, had surprised the sixth year, considering she'd thought she failed. But Hirsch was great and he was best mates or boyfriend? to Reed, so yea.
But when she entered the classroom that day, she did a double-take and turned around to double-check on her planner since she was nearly positive that the lesson hadn't indicated to wear boots or anything. No, she just had on her usual flats, which meant a quick warming charm on her feet was in order before re-entering the classroom.
Snow. She was half tempted by the weather to steal Vivian's usual song-entrance pattern with a rendition of do you want to build a snowman? but that was 1) Vivian's thing. And 2) Hirsch wasn't even here?
Okay. Now she was definitely confused.

It was shoddy luck really; waking up so late that you had to throw whatever you could down your throat before hurrying back up to Defense Against the Dark Arts. If there was one class she refused to be late for, it was this one. There was just something about it being the class her Head of House taught. Didn't wanna go disappointing the man or forcing him to take points.
Slice of toast nearly done, Jessa entered the classroom all ready to explain that she'd get it done quickly and was sorry to have had to bring it in the first place....but there was no Professor. Huh.
Crunch.
Jessa came to a stop by Theo, watching the spike in enthusiasm Zoryn seemed to have after seeing the snow. Fancy that. Snow in the Defense room. Jessa took the final bite of her toast. "Did we miss the memo or something?" Or was the room meant to be sans the Professor? Hirsch was always full of surprises so she wouldn't be dropping her guard anytime soon but now she was definitely curious.
Was this real snow?
The Ravenclaw leaned over to grab some, moulding it in her hands while she got a feel for the texture. Interesting.

Patrick came skirting around he corner a piece of toast hanging from his mouth. Nearly bumping into El Capitan of the Quidditch team he looked around, eyes blinking a bit. “Uh cah-was uh huh?” he flipped the pages of his planner his mother insisted he carry after almost never remembering his assignments in muggle school. Yup, class was scheduled for in here, there was snow on the ground.... and no Hirsch at the front of the room like always.
He had arrived early hoping that he would have gotten a seat in the back, now he wasn’t so sure. He grabbed the piece of toast from his mouth as he placed the planner in his bag before he looked around the room, was that Zoryn making snow angels? “You know what’s going on Skylar?”

Junia ducked into the classroom, her eyes widening slightly at the sight of snow. That wasn't something you saw everyday. Slipping her wand free from its holster, she held it loosely in her hand as she made her way across the floor to where her classmates were standing. She felt more at ease having it out, particularly in this space. That's where it belonged.

Snow? Inside? In October??? Night shivered a little bit, glad she'd brought a sweatshirt.
Taking a further look around, she noticed something else amiss. "Professor Hirsch?" Where was he?
Should Night have even bothered coming to this lesson? What if there was a malfunction and Hirsch was away because he was trying to get things sorted out? And why wasn't she allowed to take hot chocolate into the classrooms? It would certainly wake her up then. She was one of those weird people who got sleepy when it was cold, instead of when she was hot.
Well, maybe she would just join the fourth year Gryffindor on the floor making snow angels. If that would wake her up???
"Hey. You're Zoryn, right? Can I join you? That looks fun."
Without waiting for an answer, she flopped down into the snow.

Why was she smiling at him? Did he have something in his teeth or did he still have bed head hours later? The latter was definitely more pressing if true. Ok maybe it was neither and she was just friendly. that was cool too.

Huh, oh hi Jessa. Memo. If they really even got a memo. Théo would have forgotten it already and misplaced it. He hoped not. But when did you ever get memo's at this school.
"Probably but I think Zoryn found the best use for the snow yet. The only thing left is a snowball fight for Hirsch to break up"

She smiled and got some gloves out from her bag. She put them on and clumped up some snow trying to pack it into a laege ball for the bottem of a snow man.
"Hey Theo' wanna help?" She asked offering him some snow that was quickly melting in her gloved hands. Whoops.

Another morning…another Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson.
Cassie made her way down to the first floor ready for the latest class, her school bag slung over her shoulder as she walked. Stepping through the open doorway into the classroom, the seventh year looked around to take in her surroundings. Constant vigilence and all that, drilled into them by their professor and her head of house. She was always quick to be careful because she knew from experience not to be taken off guard. Even by something as outrightly seemingly mundane as snow like the stuff littering the floor of the room.
She made her mark by her footsteps as she walked further inside, also taking note that Professor Hirsch wasn’t there. Or at least not visible. Cass couldn’t help wondering what the overabundance of firsties thought of the scene before them as she headed towards her fellow seventh years. “Hey…” the Ravenclaw greeted Olivia, figuring to stand waiting for the lesson to begin beside her friend was as good a plan as any.

It was class time for Kirk, one of his favorite subjects that he managed to scrape a decent enough O.W.L grade for. He headed for the classroom which... was not looking like much of every other classroom today.
It was snowing for one. Kirk could feel the crunch from each step as he noted the dummies and... no Professor. Was he hiding somewhere? Kirk imagined he he would be like a hawk today for anything else out of the ordinary as he went to join the others as Jessa mentioned about a missed memo. "You think he's hiding somewhere?" He did have a knack for surprises after all. Hm..
Nothing left for him to do but wait.

Why did anyone think climbing stairs after breakfast was a good idea? And... snow. It was too early for that, Hirsch. Really? They had to deal with it for months in a row, and now here as well. De-press-ing. And cold. Finn didn't appreciate being cold.
But then he saw it. Did he really know Zoryn Spinnet at all? Absolutely not. Was he still going to go make snow angels with her. Absolutely yes.

Snow. How interesting. Daisy entered the classroom and noticed the lack of a DADA professor. He had to be hiding so Daisy was keeping an eye out as she waved to her fellow students.
