Default Charms Lesson 1: Remember Me

today'scharms lesson takes place on a chilly early November morning, but never fear! Professor Marchand has placed several heating charms on the classroom to keep it nice and toasty. As always, there are refreshments laid out on the table in the back of the room. Today's offerings include mini cheesecakes and hot cocoa.

The professor himself stands in his usual place at the front of the room, ready to greet the arriving students with a warm smile. Upon walking into the classroom, you may notice the setup looks a little different today. The desks are pushed together in groups of four, and at the center of each group of desks is a small maze. And that isn't the only strange thing! There is a cage sitting on Professor Marchand's desk; inside are many brightly-colored toy mice. Why does the professor have toy mice on his desk? Does it have anything to do with the lesson? You'll find out soon!

OOC: Welcome to the first OOC Charms lesson of the term! Class will officially start in ABOUT 24 HOURS (1:30 AM EST [GMT -5] Jan. 22) HAS STARTED!

Patrick walked in and headed straight for the snacks. One of the perks of Professor Marchands class, but also because he hadn’t have a chance to get breakfast as he came straight down from the library. He looked around, there were so many desks already filled. He took a seat at a cluster of tables by himself figuring other will join him. “Morning Professor, good snacks.” he held up the cheesecake as he sat down ready to eat the food that had been given to him.

Mornings needed to be made illegal. Abra was actually seriously considering putting his name forward to be Minister for Magic and winning and actually literally banning mornings and anyone scheduling anything to take place before noon. Except that it seemed unlikely because probably only British wizards and witches could be British ministers and there wasn't much that an Egyptian minister could do about establishing laws in the UK. Also, he probably wouldn't win something like that anyway.

Abra didn't function properly in the mornings. He just didn't. It took him at least until lunch time to really get going - and by then the day was practically over, so he usually used that as his excuse to stop focusing much anyway.

It was a relief to get inside a WARM classroom after the chill (understatement; it was more like a deep freeze) that was lingering in the corridors, though for a split second Abra worried that it would be TOO warm and TOO relaxing and make him sleepy enough to lose focus for the lesson. But then he caught sight of the tables.

Tables. Grouped. Together.

Group work. FORCED group work.

Fear gripped him. This could be a disaster. What if he ended up without a seat and had to sit and work with people he didn't know and TALK TO THEM and then make an idiot of himself and-

OH. FREE SEAT. SURROUNDED BY FAMILIAR PEOPLE.

Abra made a beeline for it (and not a particularly dignified beeline either, more like a desperate sprint across the classroom, every man for himself kind of thing), and claimed the space at the cluster with Zoryn, Jessa, and Junia. As he sat down, he placed his hands flat against the wood of the desk, palms down, as though emphasising his claim.

"Oh." Right. Yes. Of course. "Morning, Professor Marchand." Ahem.

Was it too much to ask for a normal, boring lesson? Natalie had a feeling she wasn't going to be very good at mazes. She didn't really like puzzles too much. A liiiittle too complicated for her attention span. Plus, she was only really good at the basic charms, not the overly complicated ones.

Since the table cluster with Jessa was taken, Natalie took a seat at the cluster where her fellow fourth year house mate was. She gave him a smile and a quiet hello as she took her coat off. FINALLY, a professor who understood how COLD November was. After hanging it on the back of her chair, Natalie got out a quill, some parchment and her textbook and waited for class to begin.

Default Snagging Maxton and Natalie!
Ravenpuff | Cap'n Crunch | Bedtime Queen | O Minion, My Minion

Yaaaaaaaaaawn.

Supposedly the cool November air in the castle could keep them awake. But he was a teenage boy, and this early in the morning he just wanted to be in bed. At least Marchand would have food. He'd skipped breakfast that morning on purpose for an extra fifteen minutes in bed after staying up late studying, so he was really hoping for something good.

After turning down the charms corridor, he spotted the classroom door and entered. "Good morning, sir," he said sleepily. "Looking forward to this lesson, I promise." Because his disheveled-bedhead hair, lack of showering, and glazed eyes didn't exactly give that away.

He stopped to pick up some breakfast first. Cheesecake? Not so much. But he'd take a drink for sure. He levitated a mug since his hands would be too full, and found a seat at a table without even looking at who was there, his mug softly clunking down next to him. "Oh, morning guys," he said when he noticed Maxton and Natalie. But that was it, because tired.

Food for a morning class...now that was bliss. Night had taken a bowl of cereal and then had to rush down to the charms room shortly after. Yeah, she had overslept. But to be fair, she was reading. And she barely had time to read anymore, what with homework and classes and everything. And at least she was that kind of a Night Owl, instead of the type who stayed up all hours of the night partying or sneaking off to Hogsmeade. Did people even do that, or did she just make that up?

"Mornin', Professor Marchand," Night said. Luckily, there was hot chocolate. That would wake her up (even if her stomach hated her for it later).

Katy was eager for DADA, which was unusual for her, and her interest was only furthered by the props the professor had set up for them. Labyrinths and toy mice... and snacks. She only eyed the snacks hopefully before looking for a seat.

And that was a puzzle, since the room was full of eager eyed younger students, but the older students were congregating together. She wasn't a prefect, so what did she care? No... really... she didn't.

"Good day, Professor. Nice spellwork with those mazes." She waved at the professor before opting for a good mixed group of students. Finn, Natalie, and Maxton. This was practically charitable of her, right? "Hullo, all. Ready to take on the world? Or at least... a small mousy world?" She dropped into the open chair.

Charms. Another of the lessons Stasya usually looked forward to, mostly because it was taught by her head of house and he was one of the professors who she trusted with stuff. Even if that had mostly just been because Professor Hirsch had told her she ought to tell Professor Marchand stuff because he was her head of house. She still liked him, and she felt like he needed people who liked him here at Hogwarts since the other Professor Marchand had left. That and she was curious how she was, to be honest. Either way, as long as her friends didn’t get burned with hot butter again in lessons, she liked Charms. She was fairly good with Charms, too. By now. She’d practiced a lot on her own, when she hadn’t been working on dueling club related spells. There were a lot of Charms she could use to help the creatures, too.

The weather wasn’t bothering her overly much, but even with her Derf-imposed aversion to classroom food in place, she wasn’t about to turn down hot cocoa. She’d made a beeline for that table as soon as she’d arrived in the classroom, serving herself a cup before she’d turned to decide where to sit. Except, there really wasn’t a lot of decision making needed, as she headed over to the table where Liv was seated with another ickle Gryffindor. Giving professor Marchand a grin as she passed him. “Good morning Professor Marchand! Thanks for the cocoa.”

And then she’d arrived at the table cluster and gave the two girls a smile. “Hi Liv. Hi,” she tried to think of if she remembered the Sorting, “Freja.” She thought that was right, and besides, it was nearly a familiar name. Nearly. Except she knew more Russians than she did people on her mama’s side of the family aside from her grandparents and direct family.

A charms lesson was always a class to be ready for in Cassie’s mind. If there was anything that had been cemented in 6 years at Hogwarts, it was that she had a proficiency in the field like her father. Which was why she came well-prepared and ready to go for the latest lesson, stepping into the familiar classroom with time to spare. Her satchel of belongings slung over her shoulder as she surveyed the room.

“Good morning, Professor,” she greeted the man as she moved to step further inside. Cass claimed a seat at one of the bunched desks with her satchel placed upon it before heading to the back and pouring herself a mug of hot chocolate. Still early for a sweet after breakfast so she left the cheesecakes alone as she returned to sit down. Now to await the lesson to begin, her gaze falling on the mazes and toy mice in wonderment. “Good thing my cat’s not around," she mused quietly with a chuckle.

It was time for charms class and Emmalyn couldn’t be more excited. Not because she was any good at charms, but she really liked Professor Marchand and there were always snacks. The best snacks. As she entered the room, she noticed the desks were arranged differently than normal. “Hello, Professor Marchand.” She greeted with a smile.

Scanning the room, she spotted Derf, Ace, Night, and Daisy, and waved to each of them as she quickly made her way over to grab a hot chocolate and a mini creamy dreamy cheesecake. The smell was glorious. She could hardly wait to dig in. “Hi Daisy. Do you mind if I sit with you?” She asked even though she was already sitting with her friend and as she motioned to Night to join them as well.

Emmalyn was quite curious about the table set up. The little maze in the middle sparked her interest, as did the cage of little toy mice on the professor’s desk. “I hope I get a pink one.”

And there were two more seats at their table cluster so probably they would fill up too. Actually a bunch of her own friends weren't here yet, not to mention potential new friends.

She smiled at Diandra and then studied the maze some more, expression interested. Mice were going to go IN there, right?

Alessandro walked into Charms and noticed immediately that the desks were pushed into groups of four. They were to be expected to siphon themselves off into little groups. He quickly scanned the room for familiar faces, friends, but came up short.

Besides Katy. But her table was already full and he didn't want to embarrass her in front of her friends. Or minions. It was hard to tell with his cousin.

So instead of sitting with familiar he settled for the comfort of yellow. He passed the Charms' professor with a tight smile and briefly waved his gloved hand in a simple hello, "Professor Marchand. Good morning." And then he sat with his fellow Hufflepuffs. A pair of older girls.

He wrung his little hands under the desk he took and, then, politely said, "Hello. I'm Al."

She hoped Mrs Marchand was doing well, at least.

"Hello Professor Marchand!" she greeted with her usual enthusiasm. It was charms though and she liked this Professor A LOT and it helped him having an amazing subject. Now where to sit. Yes she noticed the toy mice at the professors desk but nothing to inquire about; they would find out soon enough.

Oh look at all that cheesecake Tenacius had in front of him! Sliding into the chair next to him, she grinned at the head boy. "You don't mind sharing, right?" because way too much cheesecake there for one person and she was also looking out Vi later since that much cheese was bound to have flatulence effects on a person. And because she was lazy, she may have reached for his fork like no big deal.

It got pretty dank down there, honestly. Scotland was generally cold, wasn't it?

But because she was a good student, Vivian sort of dragged herself out of bed, her boyfriend's stolen sweater over her uniform, and made her way to the Charms classroom. She was particularly thankful for the heating charms in the room, otherwise she'd have cold hands within minutes. "Good morning, professor Marchand," the prefect greeted with a small smile. Then her eyes fell on the food on the refreshments table.

That's more like it. Despite not being hungry, the Slytherin took a cup of hot cocoa for herself so she could warm her fingers. Besides, she had marshmallows inside her bag and she could totally plop one inside her mug for added flavour. As usual, Vivian found herself a seat beside Skylar. If there was anyone whom she would sit beside in Charms class, it'd be the wifey. "Hey, Sky... hi, Ace," she greeted the dorm mate and the Head Boy as well. Not the mention, that cheesecake looked good too.

... Wait, why were there toy mice here?

The Curly Top was busily stuffing his pie hole when the Slytherin Captain slid into the seat next to him. "Arshr rrwrf" came the garbled out reply, but by his gesturing it pretty much means she can help herself to his little mountain pile of cheesecake. No forks though, because his Mama always says to use the gifts that God gave you... like hands.

Oh and the Slytherin Prefect joined them next. Such honor, Dad would be proud. "Aii "iv!" he greeted her in pretty much the same incomprehensible-ness as he did earlier with Skylar. He gestured at the cheesecake for her to take. If that garbledness is anything to go by, is that the cheescake is THAT good.

Huh.

That was Cameron’s first thought as he walked into the classroom. It wasn’t even a real thought per se. It wasn’t even a word. More like a...feeling. Interesting. What was happening today? It looked very...scientific. Like they would be conducting some sort of experiment today.

Which, frankly, was QUITE cool.

”Good day, Professor” Cam greeted him before finding an available seat. Oh, look, Bel. Quickly heading over to her he sat down in the last empty seat by her. ”Hey.” Hi, Bel. ”Hello. I’m Cameron.” He’d seen the other two around but wasn’t sure he knew their names. And thus, assumed it would be the same for them with his name. Manners, see?

Kye had been looking at the little maze on the table, thinking about the mice at the front and wondered what exactly they would be doing today. She finished her little slice of cheesecake so that she could move the plate out of the way. On her way to drop it off on the back table, she wondered if Professor Marchands would mind her getting a second mug of cocoa... She still had a full cup, but she would definitely come back to that thought.

Upon return to her seat, Kye saw a face she vaguely recognized. She sat back down and smiled at the girl. Like most to Kye, the Ravenclaw was familiar, but they had never spoken.

"Hi, I'm Kye. Nice to meet you!" she greeted, happily.

"Oh hi Al, I'm Bel. Nice to meet you."
Bel smiled cheerfully, not at all bothered by a first year joining them. Why would she be? It wasn't like she was a billion years older after all.

Cam got a grin from her when he joined them too, sitting next to her. Smiles all around. They had their group of four now. Diandra, Al, Cam, and herself. Oh speaking of, did Al and Cam know Diandra? Lets fix that. "This is Diandra." There. Everyone was introduced pretty much.

So hopefully the activity would be a fun one. Usually Marchand made classes pretty fun, Bel felt, so she was very hopeful about it, and the maze and the mice had her intrigued for sure.

So some stuff she had been quite ahead on, though there was plenty of difference between Aussie curriculum and UK curriculum that meant she was completely clueless about other things. She liked the charms classes here though, and she was very glad that the room wasn't too frigid. Thank youuuu sir.

"Hello Professor Marchand!" Bel sat down at one of the desk clusters, glad to note it was obviously going to be a work in groups lesson, and either her friends would sit with her or she'd get to make some new ones. She took a good look at the maze on her desk cluster and the toy mice on the professors desk and then unpacked her things. She hadn't noticed the refreshments.
Gaston stood near his desk at the front of the room, doing one last quick count of the toy mice before the students arrived. Good, it looked like he had more than enough. He finished counting just as Miss Macindoe arrived and smiled at her. “Good morning, Miss Macindoe,” he returned her greeting.

"Goodmorning Professor!" he greeted his Head of House brightly, looking at him and waving even if his feet are decidedly headed towards the back of the room. Hot cocoa yes! Downs a cup in one gulp, before grabbing another cup and a plateful of cheesecake, which seemed like its enough to feed everybody that he'd be sharing a table with.... if they get to his table fast enough.

As the Curly Top settled onto the table he usually sits at, it was then that he noticed the small maze. And in hindsight the colorful mice on the Professor's desk when he greeted him earlier. Mice... and then cheesecake? Hmmmm "Not gonna be using live specimen today Professor?" he grinned as he popped a cheesy bit into his mouth. "They dont know what they're missing with these cheescakes mmmm."
Ah, here was the Head Boy! Gaston beamed, returning Mr. Salander’s wave. “Good morning, Mr. Salander.” He inwardly chuckled as he watched him make a beeline for the refreshments, but what the boy said next had him laughing out loud. “Well, maybe they’ll find out what they’re missing soon,” he said with a wink.

Smiling at his Head of House, he greeted the man with a bright, "Hello, professor!" before scurrying to the back of the classroom to grab a piece of cheesecake and a cup of hot cocoa.

As his stomach was all happy and content, he settled at a group of desks in the front row, and let his bag drop next to the desk after taking out parchment, ink, his quill, and textbook. And only then did he notice the mice... and the mazes on each table... were they going to animate the mouses? How awesome would that be?
Mr. Yoon was next to arrive, and he too received a beam from the professor. “Hello, Mr. Yoon,” he replied, his bright blue eyes following him to the refreshment table. Somehow he had a feeling the kids would enjoy today’s menu!

And here was Miss Diggory, early as usual. Not that Gaston minded, of course; quite the opposite. He admired her punctuality. Her enthusiastic greeting never failed to make him smile! “Good morning, Miss Diggory!”

Entering the classroom, though, she had to take off the layers. She appreciated the nice warm room, seeing as she could concentrate on her learning, without her mind being on how cold she was, AND without all the layers. "Hello Professor Marchand," Hanna said. It had taken her a few lessons of stuttering her way through a 'Gas-Pr... Professor Gas... er... Professor Marchand,' but she'd managed.

She headed to the back to get some treats, and settled on a chair, at a table already a quarter occupied. "Hello," Hanna greeted Daniel, as she got her things out of her bag and set up.
Oh, here was Rose’s little cousin Hanna! Gaston had been wondering when she might show up. He beamed at her, but his expression turned slightly concerned when he saw all the layers she had on. Was the classroom too cold? He was about to ask her about it but saw she was taking some of the layers off. It looked like she was warm enough after all. Good! “Hello, Miss Newton,” he greeted, giving her an extra beam for getting through his name without stuttering.

"Good morning Professor Marchand, thank you for the spoils!" she greeted him.
She eyed the toy mice for a second before the aroma swept her back to the refreshment table. She grabbed herself a small piece of cheesecake, and the fullest looking mug of cocoa... sincerely resisting the urge to grab a few cups.

She found an empty grouping of seats and took one of those. It was definitely a bit warmer in the class, what with the heaters the professor had set up. Kye removed her coat, and enjoyed a few sips of her cocoa while she waited.
Miss Atwater was next to arrive. Gaston smiled as he watched her enter the class, and his smile grew even wider as she thanked him for the snacks. “Good morning, Miss Atwater,” he replied. “You’re very welcome; glad you like them!”

Here was the Slytherin prefect! Gaston returned Miss Fairfield’s smile with a warm one of his own as she arrived. “Good morning, Miss Fairfield,” he greeted.

"Good morning, Professor Marchand." She greeted the man and tried not to yawn in front of his face because... you know, it's not polite.

Did the Professor serve hot cocoa? Because she could smell it from here. What a coincidence, Diandra was thinking to get a cup of that warm sweet chocolate-y drink before she headed to the classroom. Taking a cup of the drink, she decided to join her fellow Hufflepuff. "Hi, Bel. You don't mind if I sit here, do you?" She asked the Australian girl.
Was it just him, or did Miss Salim look a little… tired? Or at least, Gaston hoped that was all it was. Not that he could blame her. He wasn’t exactly a morning person himself, but teaching and schedules and all that good stuff. “Good morning, Miss Salim,” he said with a warm smile.

Freja confidently strode into the Charms classroom and studied the room and faces around her quickly, still smiling. She immediately was not a fan of the desk arrangement, but her attention was soon brought to the toy mice on the table. Her bet was that they'd be turning those into REAL mice during this lesson. Called it now.

"Good morning, Professor..." Professor.... what's his name? Were those mini cheesecakes over there?? AHEM... "Professor.... sir!" Every guy liked to be called a sir, didn't they?

Anyway... wait... had she even remembered to bring her wand?
Miss Simm came in next, and Gaston couldn’t help but beam at the sight of her smile and confident strides. That was the kind of attitude he liked to see! Blink, blink. Professor Sir? "Hi Professor Marchand"

Yeah to a seat he goes, guess they were doing group work or something with a maze. Interesting or could be.

He didn't even look at Marchands desk to see the toy mice
Another one of his Lions arrived, and Gaston smiled at Mr. Montmorency. His expression changed slightly at the sight of the boy’s yawn. Sorry about the early class time! Maybe the cocoa would wake him up a bit? “Good morning, Mr. Montmorency,” he greeted.

Oh yum.

"Good day Professor Marchand." She smiled brightly at the professor before getting a cup of cocoa and headed for a seat. She took the one at a table Theodore was sitting at, then offered a smile in greeting.
Here was another student immediately drawn to the refreshments. Gaston was not at all surprised but still pleased. Miss McLaughlin’s bright smile earned her an equally bright smile in return. “Hello, Miss McLaughlin,” he replied.

She hoped she'd be just on time. It would be bad if she got there too early. But hopefully she would be just on time. The blonde smiled still, as she headed into the classroom. She noticed the desks were in little sets of four. She smiled at Ace, Sky, and Viv, but headed to an empty desk, after collecting herself a hot coco from the back. She didn't sit with her friends since she figured it would be good to not have a big group of older students. So she sat alone for now, and sipped at her hot drink.
Another smiling student arrived; Gaston was pleased. It did his heart good to see his students in a good mood! He was a tad concerned when he saw how bundled up Miss Paton was, though. Were his heating charms wearing off already? “Good morning, Miss Paton,” he greeted. “Are you warm enough?”

Ohhh, yas! Cheesecakes and hot cocoa! "Lovelyyyyy." The Gryffindor exclaimed happily, piling up quite a few mini cheesecakes on his arms after shoving some in his mouth, and levitating his hot cocoa so it would follow him to his seat.

Back of the room, near the refreshments table, of course.

Perfect! The seventh year put all of his stuff on one of the desks and sat back and relaxeddddd. Man, those cheesecakes were awesome. "Thanks for that, professor!" He said, raising one of the mini things up as if toasting. That was going to be a good lesson!
Gaston returned Mr. Meriwether’s wave as he arrived and, in typical fashion, headed straight for the refreshments. “Hello, Mr. Meriwether,” he greeted with a smile. He chuckled to himself as he watched the boy piling cheesecakes on his arms. It was bad when not even potions could help the situation. Just saying.

.....Oh, snacks.

Usually, Liv might've been a bit annoyed by food being present in the classroom, but it was getting colder and colder by the day, and that hot cocoa looked particularly inviting. So, yes... she was going to help herself. Dancing over to the table, Olivia resituated her bag and removed her gloves. The gloves were that thick woolen material that made it nigh impossible to carefully maneuver her fingers. In fact, she was sure she'd be making a huge unwanted mess, otherwise... Anyway, hot cocoa with added sugar and just a little bit of coffee creamer was the perfect start to the day. It was lucky she'd had some french vanilla creamer in her bag left over from breakfast. Stirring the contents of her cup, she carefully toted both cup-and-saucer over to a cluster of tables, where a Firstie (Freja) was sitting by herself. It was a familiar setup, reminding her of when she'd volunteer at muggle schools in downtown London. It was popular with kindergarten teachers. As for the multicolored rats and the mazes.... Why was Liv thinking today would be about Piertotum Locomotor?

"How are you this morning, Professor Marchand?" Sip, sip.....and to the First Year lion she'd joined, Olivia grinned especially bright. "Hello, there! I hope this is okay."
Miss Phillips was the next to appear, and she received a bright smile from the professor. He was a little surprised she opted for some cocoa but wasn’t bothered by it at all. That was what it was there for, after all! “Good morning, Miss Phillips,” he replied. “I’m quite well, thank you for asking. How are you?”

Zoryn wasted no time piling up mini-cheesecake on top of mini-cheesecake utnil she had a stack of at least seven of them. And of course she also grabbed a mug of hot cocoa 'cause the more the merrier, y'know? She didn't even pay attention to where she went to sit 'cause the only important thing at the moment was all of the cheesecake she was about to inhale. Life was grand.
Here was another Gryffindor! Gaston half-expected Miss Spinnet to make a beeline for the food but was pleasantly surprised when she greeted him first. “Good morning, Miss Spinnet,” he said, beaming at the quidditch captain.

He had eaten breakfast, but cheesecake was always welcome (it was nothing short of a miracle, combined with teenage metabolism and exercise that he was all of 110 pounds instead of all big and jolly like St. Nick, honestly). So, yeah, he grabbed himself a mini cheesecake and a mug of hot cocoa and joined his fellow Gryffindor Matt at the table near the refreshments. A "Hello, Professor Marchand!" was cheerfully said before the sixth year dug in. Gentleman-like, of course. He wasn't a big fan of the messy eating style.

Bon appetite, indeed.
So the Gryffindor parade continued! Gaston smiled at Mr. Carter as he arrived. His eyes followed the boy as he helped himself to a cheesecake and cocoa. “Hello, Mr. Carter,” he returned the greeting.

The professor would tell them soon enough. Now it was time to sit back and enjoy her cheesecake and hot cocoa. *slurp* Aahhh delicious. This was the breakfast of champions.
Gaston wondered if the next person to arrive was going to be yet another Gryffindor. Nope, Miss Cararro broke the Gyrffindor streak. Not that the professor minded at all; he was glad to see her. "Hello professor, cute mice." She wouldn't have minded them being real,
because they were so cute. Moving towards the seat she had picked, you are so welcome boys, she looked towards her friends. Magnolia and Theo got waves and an approving grin to Magnolia, this was a good pick for her, yes someone to snog that was already pretaken by his parent's rules. The rest got waves or hair flips deepening who they are until she was sitting in the group of four desks that had Ronan and Matt. "Hello boys, I guess you're the lucky ones today." Z never sat with ugly people so that should tell them something.
Gaston’s bright blue eyes followed Miss Valla as she entered the room. Blink, blink. He was somewhat used to compliments on the refreshments, but he wasn’t expecting a compliment on the mice. That was a pleasant surprise! “Hello, Miss Valla,” he greeted her. “Thank you.” He watched the waves and hair flips she was giving people, unsure whether to be amused or appalled. To her relief there was few more tables with no one sitting there. She seen Magz and Theo she waved to them as she passed, maybe she should sit with them. But there was Zarina sitting there alone. Jessa fought to keep her eyes open, the surest sign the potion was beginning to lose its effect and her body was again trying to succumb to its natural need. Should've brought some down with her to breakfast but she'd felt FINE when she left her lab that morning.

"Hello Professor." She greeted, trying her best to mask another yawn as she moved to the back to collect herself some cheesecake and cocoa. Surely the food would keep her awake--or...rather....the process of eating would. It was very likely that once digestion commenced, she would need to prop her eyelids up with crowbars.

"Hey Zoryn." She greeted, slipping into the seat next to hers in that cluster of desks and chairs. The maze was interesting. Couple that with the caged toy rats and miraculously, the Ravenclaw was beginning to feel more alert. "This is looking like my kind of lesson." Mazes and test subjects. That's all she saw, really.
Gaston eyed Miss Cambridge with slight concern as she appeared. She looked tired, even more so than normal for a morning class. He immediately wondered if she was alright, but he chose not to draw attention to her by asking. “Good morning, Miss Cambridge,” he greeted her with a small smile. He couldn’t help but overhear the comment she made to Miss Spinnet, and his mood instantly brightened. He hoped this lesson would hold her interest!

"Ladies, I hope you don't mind." Honestly, after looking around, Junia figured sitting with Jessa and Zoryn would be the most entertaining. The combination screamed of amusement to come and the sixth year could use some of that. She settled into her seat and then focused on the maze, gaze curious. They'd be trying to get a mouse through this, yes?
Miss Botros came in next and appeared to be interested in the mazes on the desks, so much so that for a moment, Gaston thought she might forget to say hello to him.

Here was Mr. Botros! Gaston beamed at the boy, but his face soon fell. He couldn’t help but notice that he seemed a bit… fearful. He watched as he made a beeline across the room, and for one wild moment, he half-expected him to head for the refreshments. That didn’t happen; instead he went for Junia. Gaston sent him a sympathetic look, and the thought crossed his mind to rush to the boy’s side and try to comfort him. But he decided against it. The last time he did that, it didn’t end well. Instead, he returned the boy’s greeting with an encouraging smile, “Good morning, Mr. Botros.”

Here was another sleepy-looking student! Gaston smiled sympathetically. He should probably think about scheduling his lessons a bit later in the day! “Hello, Mr. Muir,” he returned the Ravenclaw’s greeting; the boy’s next words earned him a beam. “I’m glad to hear it!”

Oh, goodness! Another sleepy person! That was it! Gaston had made up his mind to avoid morning classes whenever possible from now on, but for now, they’d just have to make the best of things. Hopefully the students would wake up soon… He smiled at Miss Dixon as she spoke to him. “Good morning, Miss Dixon,” he replied.

Miss Toussaint arrived, and Gaston was pleased to see that she seemed interested in the maze and toy mice. He beamed, returning her wave. “Good morning, Miss Toussaint,” he said. The compliment took him a bit by surprise but was no less appreciated. “Thank you!”

Miss Dalgaard-Volkova also received a beam from the professor when she arrived. He was slightly shocked when she opted for some cocoa – he knew she didn’t often take food from professors. “Good morning, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova,” he greeted her with a big smile of his own. “You’re quite welcome!”

Gaston glanced at his watch; almost time for class to start. He decided to give the students another moment or two to arrive… and he was very glad he did, as Miss McNally came in. “Good morning, Miss McNally,” he replied, smiling. His eyes followed her to her seat, and he noticed her looking at the cat toys on the desk. Good, he was pleased that she appeared curious.

Miss Walsh appeared soon after, and Gaston eagerly returned her smile. “Hello, Miss Walsh,” he said, watching as she took a seat. He noticed she too appeared interested in the maze and mice. It would only be a matter of time before all would be revealed!

I'm Al."
Here was Mr. Toussaint – just in time! Gaston couldn’t help but notice that the boy’s smile looked a little tight, and he was immediately worried. Was something wrong? He’d have to ask later… he’d have to start the class soon! For now, he returned the boy’s smile with a sympathetic one of his own and said, “Good morning, Mr. Toussaint.”

Mr. Tamesis arrived right in the nick of time, and Gaston gave him a warm smile upon his arrival. "Good morning, Mr. Tamesis," he greeted.

Was Mr. Tamesis the last to arrive? It appeared so, but just in case, Gaston gave the class a few moments to talk amongst themselves as he waited for more stragglers. A quick check of his watch showed it was 9:00 on the dot. He aimed his wand at the door and it closed with a quiet click.

Taking his usual place at the front of the room, Gaston addressed the class, "Good morning, everyone! I hope you're all ready to learn..." He waited a minute for the students' attention to turn to him before continuing, "Today we'll be doing things a little differently and starting with a mini activity."

He moved over to the cage of toy mice on his desk. "As you saw when you came in, these are not real mice," he said. "They will be enchanted to behave like real mice for use in today's lesson, but I've waited until now to do so so you can see for yourselves that there will be no creatures harmed in the activity." He knew many of his students cared about creatures - and he was something of an animal lover himself - so he didn't want them to worry!

He pointed his wand at the cat toys and cast a nonverbal Piertotum Locomotor; the brightly-colored mice began squeaking and scurrying around in the cage. "We will, as some of you may have already guessed, be using these mice in the mazes on your desks," he explained. "For now, your task is to guide a mouse through the maze without magic. That part will come into play a bit later on, but it's important that the mice run the maze on their own first. Otherwise, the spells we're learning won't be effective."

He gave a few moments for the information to sink in before going on, "First, collect a mini cheesecake from the refreshment table - this is for the mouse, not yourselves -" he added for those who were wary about taking food from the professors. "- and place it somewhere in the maze. Then come up to the front and pick out a mouse. You can pick any color you want, but please try to be careful not to let it escape. Place your mouse at the opposite end of the maze, and guide it through to the cake like so..."

Gaston gently picked up a blue mouse and moved over to the Head Boy's group. "Mind if I borrow your maze for a minute?" he asked Ace, Skylar, and Vivian. He summoned a cheesecake and placed it at the top right end of the maze; then he turned the mouse loose in the bottom left end, gently coaxing it along when it got lost or confused. It eventually found the cheesecake and nibbled away contentedly.

While the mouse was eating, he addressed the class again, "If your mouse finishes the maze before time is up, run it through again, and make sure you put the cheesecake in the same place each time. It's important that the mouse remember the maze and where the cake is. Run your mouse through the maze as many times as you can, but I'd like everyone to complete it at least once." He paused a moment. Had he forgotten anything? Oh yes! "You may work in your group or alone, if you prefer, but you may have to take turns using the maze in that case."

He removed the blue mouse from the maze and waved his wand to clear any cheesecake crumbs that may have been left behind before returning it to the cage. "If you need help or have questions, just raise your hand and I'll come to you. You have about twenty minutes to do the mini activity, starting... NOW!"

OOC: Sorry for the delay in updating! My laptop wouldn't cooperate while I was typing this. Class has now OFFICIALLY STARTED. Feel free to jump in any time; just act like your charrie's been here all along. Late arrivals will lose points. As Gaston said, all you have to do is guide one of the mice through the maze to find a piece of cheesecake as many times as you can WITHOUT using magic. He and I will be checking in periodically. If you have a question, please indicate in the title of your post. You have ABOUT 72 HOURS (6:00 AM EST Jan. 25) to do the mini activity.

Harriet was a little disappointed that nobody had joined her on her table. That was kind of sad, and she frowned. Now, she could easily just move to join someone right? That wouldn't be so bad. She had wanted to try and help the younger students, so she figured she'd just stay where she was. For now anyway. Maybe she could move later. Having a maze to herself would be beneficial right now anyway. That meant that she didn't have to wait for her turn. She quite liked that. It would also help her concentrate more if she didn't have to talk to anyone. The blonde smiled, standing up and going to get a small bit of cheesecake. It looked nice, and she kind of wondered if she should get herself some. But she'd had a snack before class, so she decided against it. Didn't need too much food.

She went back to her bench, putting the portion of cheesecake into a corner, before going to get herself a toy mouse. She was glad it was a toy, because she really did not like proper mice. Arriving back at her table, she sat down, and popped the mouse into another end of the maze. Now to get it going. She poked it a little, and it began going around the maze. Perfect. Now to hope it didn't get lost!

For Kye it was more a relief that she didn't have to deal with animal droppings or anything... When he mentioned getting a piece of cheesecake, for a second Kye thought maybe she wasn't supposed to eat it. She doubted he would have stayed quiet if that were the case...

As he demonstrated the activity, Kye stood up to have a better look. Okay... this seemed easy enough, but she was curious as to what the charm they were going to learn did... and what she could apply it to in real life.

When Professor Marchand had instructed, Kye was still standing so she volunteered herself to grab a mouse. "Be right back!" she said, and off she went. She grabbed a cheesecake slice from the back, and put it on her group table for someone to place. With that, she headed to the front and grabbed a purple mouse. She didn't want to grab the blue one, because she didn't want to confuse it with a new maze... Content enough, she brought it back to the table with her and put it down.

"Hope you don't mind purple.." Hopefully the color didn't matter. Should she have asked first?

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Matt thanked the professor's compliment on his Charmwork with a nod of his head and another raising of a mini cheesecake. Omnomnom!

A "Sup, mate?" was offered when Ronan took one of the empty seats near him. Matt was actually slightly curious about the mice, but he was a lot more interested in the mini cheesecakes he kept eating - the messy style of eating instead of Gentleman-like as his classmate over here.

The Gryffindor stopped chewing momentarily and looked up when a girl (Zita) made her presence known, informing them they were 'the lucky ones' that day. He snorted. She was joking, right? Or was she really that full of herself? He noticed her uniform. A Slytherin. Ahhh, yes. Full of herself.

Lol.

The seventh year listened to the instructions as he kept chewing on those great mini cheesecakes - he had taken plenty after all - and his shoulders slumped slightly. No magic, really? Ugh, that sounded boring and it actually sounded like hard work. Ain't nobody got patience for that! Well, Matt didn't, at least.

And WHA? They were going to WASTE mini cheesecakes on those fake mice???? Come oonnnnnn!!!

He magically summoned one of the colourful mice, reaching out his hand to grab the flying rodent as it came zooming their way.

Grin. Did that annoy the Slytherin girl that was saying they were cute earlier? Matt kind of hoped it did.

"I can go first." As he was holding the mouse. He begrudgingly placed one of the cheesecakes he had taken for himself on the other end of the maze and the mouse on the side nearer him. "Alright now, thing, off you go." The fake!mouse took its TIME and Matt rolled his eyes. "Come on, thing, we haven't got all day!" He poked the fake!mouse with his wand, prodding it along a little. "I'll eat that cheesecake otherwise." Just sayin'.

Rylee had been here the entire time having given her Head of House and Professor the usual bright smile and happy greeting she always gave. Having taken a cup of cocoa (which clearly wasn't the mint flavored kind) and a little cheesecake square to a table she had sat quietly for the time being. Food and drink were the best way to keep her over active self calm for a few precious moments.

So it was with her legs swinging back and forth between bites of cheesecake and sips of cocoa that she listened to the professor explain the use of the little mice mazes on their tables. They would be directing the mice through the mazes?! Awesomeness! Maybe whatever they learned today she could use to help Neptune her rat go through mazes she created for him! Wiggles.

Rylee rose to her feet and got herself a little piece of cheesecake from the table before going to get a toy mouse. A purple one of course, which she had cupped in one hand against her chest so it wouldn't get away. On the way back to her desk however she paused spotting Hattie working all alone. That didn't look like any fun at all. "Hi! Can I work with you?" Cue bright smile.

Diandra smiled at the younger badger as she let her to join her table. Yeah, pretty sure this was a group work and she didn't really mind about it except that she probably just follow what others would say/do unless they asked her opinion or something. Was she good at charms? "Uh... I guess so."She mused, not wanting to brag or anything. The badger noticed a first year joined them and introduced himself as Alessandro. Ah, she might see him around due to the same house. And then not long after that Cameron came and decided to take the last seat. Yes, Diandra knew his name because he's also a fourth year and she had seen him around. "Hi.... and nice to meet you all." She smiled and slightly nodded as Bel introduced her to the boys.

As the professor spoke up to start the lesson, Diandra paid attention to him and listened to the mini activity instruction. So they're going to guide the toy mouse passing through the maze... And what's the cheesecake for? Because you know... they were not using the real mouse so it wouldn't be eaten by the fake one, right? Also, the real animal would use the smell of cheesecake as a guide or something. But alas, she would just follow his instruction. "So... who wants to try first?" She offered to her desk mates.

Emmalyn’s eyes lit up with excitement when Professor Marchand said they get to pick their color of mouse. Pushing away any shyness she usually felt getting up during class, she hurried herself up to the cage and snagged a bright pink mouse. “Hey there little one.” she said as she carried it carefully over to her desk. She had already retrieved a mini cheesecake, so there was no need for her to stop at the refreshment table again.

“Want to work together?” She asked Daisy and Night. “I’ll start first, if that’s okay with you.” Emmalyn placed her cheesecake at the end of the maze and gently dropped her little pink mouse at the start. “I’ll call you Rose. Now, you need to run this maze as quickly as you can, Miss Rose. No stopping. There is a special treat for you at the end.” She wondered how much the spell Professor Marchand put on the mice would make them behave like real mice.

Letting go of Rose’s tail, Emmalyn encouraged the mouse with sweet sounds, hoping for it to get to the end. She watched as the mouse put it’s little nose up into the air, sniffed, and slowly started forward in the maze. It wasn’t long before it stopped again, and repeated the sniffing, then moved slowly forward once more.

A few others had opted to desk share with him, and Max gave them all a little nod in recognition before turning back to Professor Marchand and listening to what today's lesson was all about. He couldn't really figure out what Charm could be linked with leading a mouse through a maze but there was cheesecake involved which was definitely a plus.

"I guess I'll go get us a mouse and some cheesecake," Maxton said to the group at his table apprehensively. Group work wasn't his cup of tea but he didn't want to be completely anti-social either.

He picked a bright pink mouse and a healthy sized portion of cheesecake -maybe there would be some leftover- before returning to the desk. Hopefully none of them were scared of rodents... The Professor confirmed they weren't real but you never know.

Max set the mouse and dessert down on the desk and peered around at his desk-mates. "Anyone wanna go first?"

He was glad, so glad, that his Head of House had chosen to use toy mice instead of real ones, and watched in awe as they all came to life, taking note to practice that spell after class. Letting the instructions sink in, he scurried to the back of the class to fetch a piece of cheesecake, eyeing the rest longingly, already thinking of ways to sneak another bite when the professor wasn't looking. But maybe later on in class. Once back at his seat, he placed the cheesecake in the bottom right corner, and turned to Hanna. "What colour do you like most?" he asked, nodding at the mice. He was also silently suggesting that he would fetch the mouse if she wasn't particularly fond of them.

He would cuddle basically any creature. Even though they weren't true mice. Their squeaking seemed real enough.
