Transfiguration Lesson Two: Tortoise and the Rabbit
It was one of those rare afternoon's in early March that is wasn't raining. In fact, though still pretty cold outside the sun was out and shining through the few clouds that were in the sky.
The door to Professor Stewart's classroom was wide open as per usual before a lesson was about to begin. As you enter the room you'll notice that everything is as it should be, the desks and chairs neatly aligned in rows, the curtains on the windows pulled open allowing the sun to shine in. Nothing is out of place nor is there any signs of what you will be doing during this afternoons lesson.
Professor Stewart her was leaning against the front of her desk, arms folded lightly over her chest, a warm smile on her face as she waited for the students arrival. Just to the right of her desk was the usual large chalk board this time bearing the words...

She’d stayed quiet during the first question, especially when it nearly seemed like it was going to turn into a debate as to if werewolves really qualified as transfiguration, and all that other stuff Derf had pointed out. Except, Stasya was curious about Animagi. The possibility she could learn to become one had been there in the back of her mind practically since first year, but she wasn’t about to bring it up in class. Or, at least, she wasn’t planning to, not when it would have been just as easy to visit Professor Stewart in her office to ask, or she could ask her after a SPEW meeting. There were lots of options that weren’t class, unless they were going to be actually talking about Animagi in this lesson. Maybe. She didn’t think they were, but it’d be interesting.
She did raise her hand finally as they’d been asked about spells, looking over at Zoryn as her housemate had asked if switching spells could be used instead of Polyjuice potion. Being able to avoid potions was definitely tempting to the thirteen year old. “Is Fumus Lamina a transformation spell?,” she asked, bringing up a spell from last term, the potions thing still piquing her curiosity. “Since it turns smoke into daggers, that’s turning something into something else.”

Loads of frantic scribbling was going on as Emmeline tried to keep up with all of her classmates' answers and the fast pace that Cami had set for today's lesson. She didn't remember much about transformation spells; her answer would've amounted to the same thing as what Zoryn said, which wasn't really an answer at all, so she'd stayed all quiet and focused on scribbling notes down instead.
She didn't have a good answer for Cami's second question, either, but she didn't want to act like she wasn't interested or participating or something. With her forehead slightly furrowed in confusion, Emmeline raised her hand and tentatively asked, "Ummm, isn't there one that turns rats into water goblets or something?" Not that she approved of turning creatures into OBJECTS, but she was preeetty sure that she'd heard of that spell somewhere. Maybe. It was also entirely possible that she'd made it up in her dreams or something, 'cause she couldn't remember the incantation or anything else about the spell, really...
Of course Sam knew the Professor was asking about transformations; she also knew the difference between the different sorts. She hadn't felt the need to add to the previous discussion though, and instead had spent the time doodling on her parchment and thinking about birthday presents for Dora and Al. It would come round all too quickly, and wanted to get something special for each of them.
She did pay attention and start making a few proper notes as Professor Stewart summarised though. And quickly raised her hand at the next question. "Scribblifors, Professor," she answered. "It can be used to turn an object into a quill."

Three different types of human transfiguration, THREE different types. Natalie fervently scribbled down more notes, made a chart and drew lines connecting ideas as the Professor spoke. So, she wanted examples of transformation, and now that she knew what she meant...
Natalie's hand shot into the air.
"Flintifors," she said proudly. "It turns things into matchboxes." Which had never yet become useful to her, but it did exist!

Damn it, she noticed! And now he was another five points in the hole.
He simply nodded politely in Professor Stewart's direction and pulled out his note-taking supplies. But something she'd said didn't quite make sense to him. He knew he was correct about metamorphmagi and werewolves, so how could they be considered under Transfiguration? They were more like medical conditions, since, as he'd pointed out, metamorphmagi abilities came through genetics and lycanthropy was more like an incurable disease. Definitely not something voluntary like Animagi.
And speaking of Animagi, it didn't look like that would be the lesson today, unfortunately. Sigh. Seemed that they would be focusing on the less interesting transformation spells. "Ducklifors is one. Turns objects into ducks." Creatures too.

A transformation spell? That was what the Professor wanted to know? She bit her lip and then listened as others offered solutions. She took a moment before raising her hand. "There's Steelclaw," she offered. That spell transfigured a creature's claws into large steel talons. "Sounds somewhat like a painful transformation spell." The poor creature... Vi could see it now. Having large talons would be uncomfortable and perhaps would be too heavy and sharp for the creature to handle...? Perhaps?
Or maybe her imagination was just running away from her?
.... wow. That was a lot of information. Etta listened to what the professor said instead of writing it down. She could always note it down later, yeah? But the professor had a question at the end of her lecture. Huh. Transformation spells.. well, she did know of a few. Spells that she’d read about when she had been preparing for IMPS the previous term.
“What about Herbifors, Professor? It turns hair into flowers.” Which is actually pretty cool, if you think about it. Although, she definitely wouldn’t want anyone casting that spell on her. She loved her hair, thanks very much.

Vivian was also very much interested about learning more about animagi. Because turning into another creature was kinda cool, y'know? And she did like creatures as well, which added to bonus points too. The prefect wanted to remain hopeful that they would, one day, allot a class to specifically learn about being an animagus or something.
And apparently, she was also running out of ideas for the transfiguration spells list. Vivian blinked and shook away her train of thought so she could rack her brain for at least one spell that wasn't mentioned yet. Not risking it, the blond raised her hand. "Lapifors turns the target into a rabbit, Professor," Vivian said. The spell was kinda funny, too... but rabbits were cute.

So this was a lot of information and Skylar was doing her best to jot it all down; or at least the cliff-notes version. Hopefully whatever she didn't get, Vivian got (or one of her other roommates) and they could compare notes later. Also, all this talk of changing appearances had Skylar really curious about what it might take to become an animagus... it actually might help her in her ambition to be a creature healer. Except, she wasn't sure she wanted to do that anymore. Why did choosing what to do have to be so difficult?
Oh and they were talking about transforming spells and no one seemed to want to talk about appearance-altering spells, despite the initial discussion about animagi and metamorphamagus? "There's felintas, which can change the length or texture of your hair. Or Ristaris, to change your hair color." And she might have used the latter a time or two before, and possibly thinking about it again. The blue had washed out from her ends that she'd done back in November, sadly.

No, she wasn't taking notes. Jessa hadn't taken notes in Transfiguration since the day she stopped believing in the absolute truth behind Professor Stewart. Now, she politely sat and listened through the lessons, did the activities where possible then went back to her Common Room and made her own notes.
The young girl was already far head of where she needed to be and she'd done it on her own. Continuing at this rate would have been perfectly fine for her.
"Draconfiors. Turns things into dragons."
It was a simple question, one that couldn't be messed up and so far no one else had mentioned anything that wasn't correct. Her brain could be at peace for now, she could relax--though she wouldn't by much. It'd been a while since she'd last been able to relax and just let herself enjoy her favourite subject.
Now she was always on the alert, waiting for the worst.

The animagus talk just made him think about his conversation with Edward in the potions storeroom when he had...er...been collecting ingredients to polyjuice into Levi Kenning - which had NOT gone over well at ALL. Shivering a bit at that memory - primarily the terrifying calm that had been the older Gryffindor - Derf once again pocketed away his lack of ambition towards ever becoming an animagi. He lacked the attention span AND there was a potion that could allow him to transform into ANY animal he wanted...so that was far less limited than becoming an animagus. Although the mystery and whole Bertie's Botts mentality of OH OH OH WHAT WILL I GET?! was...appealing. It tickled his curiosity.
Er...but anyway...what had the question been?
Looking around and listening in, Derf was quickly able to figure THAT out for himself. "Snufflifors! That turns objects into mice."

At this point she was almost going to give up answering the question. But another answer or possible popped up in her head. She RAISED her hand this time before anyone else could. ’Riddikulus, it transfigures a boggart into whatever the caster finds amusing.” She nodded when she had finished. It was always interesting how subjects crossed over into other subjects.

This switching stuff.
"Can you use switching spells to do the same stuff as using polyjuice?" 'Cause if so then how come people spent so much time and energy brewing that hard potion when they could just wave their wand and copy someone's look that way instead?!
"Not entirely no. A switching spell involves exchanging physical features between two targets, not transforming you completely into someone else. Both targets would need to be present in a switching spell." She smiled warmly. "If you like I can show you an example after the lesson is over."

"This is an interesting one. While it does exactly what you said in changes a boggart into whatever the caster finds funny it is actually considered a charm. A lot of spells do however crossover into other subjects making it difficult to decipher just where they should be placed." This was a very good spell though and highly useful.
Each spell and it's use was added onto the board compiling a fairly decent list. Camilla was very pleased and the smile on her face was enough to confirm this. "Very good everyone. This is a wonderful list of Transformation spells. Today we will be focusing on one of the spells that is up on the board," as she spoke she flicked her wand at the board highlighting one of the spells. "Lapifors. This transforms a small object into a rabbit. It's pronounced 'LAP-i-fors' and the wand movement is to simply point your wand at the object."
Where they following her so far? She hoped so. "We will also be working on another transformation spell that wasn't listed up on the board yet." A flick of her wand adding a new spell to the list. "Testudinidifors. This transforms a teapot into a tortoise. The pronunciation is 'TES-tud-ini-di-fors' and you just tap your wand lightly on the object as you speak clearly." A longer name for a spell, yes but it was fairly easy if said correctly.
"Now I will be giving you each a number. Either one or two. Those with the number one I want you to come up and select a random item from again the wall," a wave of her wand made the items appear in view lined again one wall, things such as a cup, a small block, or a book. "You all will be working on turning your item into a rabbit today. So come up now and sit wherever you like with your items." She pointed at the first person and said one, skipped the next person and said one to the other and so on until she ran out of students. "Everyone else is two. You all can come up and collect a teapot." A wave of her wand revealed a line of teapots along the other wall. "You all can sit where you like and work on the teapot to tortoise spell."
"Should you need it, the spell to transform an incomplete transform back into it's original state is Reparifarge." They should all know this spell from previous lessons. "I will be walking around to see how everyone is doing and assisting anyone that needs it."

Patrick didn't know the spell, so instead he sat and listened to all of the others answer the question. He wasn't sure what exactly they were going to do for the lesson, but he could only imagine considering the activities they had done earlier in the year. Instead of focusing on not knowing the answer, Patrick started writing down all of the information that students were throwing out.

Rabbits?! Rabbits were soft! She wanted to make a rabbit!
And since she was the first one to be counted, she got to go up and pick a small object from the front. Natalie went up and looked at each item, wondering if any would be easier to transform into a rabbit than the others. She supposed not.. and then picked up a teacup before returning to her seat.
"Lapifors," Natalie said quietly to herself. Lapifors was MUCH easier to pronounce than Testyrundittofurs or whatever the heck she had said the tortoise spell was. Lucky for her.
Natalie sat back down at her seat and practiced the wand movement a couple times, muttering the incantation between wand wavings to make sure she was going to get it right. When she felt semi-confident, she tried both of them together.
"Lapifors!" she said with a point of the wand. The teacup rattled a little and then sprouted a pair of furry ears... but that was it. Natalie frowned, but honestly, she was proud that she at least got ears on the first try.

She knew the number she'd be given and thus the spell she'd be set to preform before the Professor had even gotten to her. It was easy enough to work it out if the kid up front there was number one. By the time it rolled around to her Jessa had already mentally prepared herself to turn teapots into tortoises.
Rising from her seat, she went up to the front to collect the teapot. From there she headed back to her seat, eyes never leaving it except the occasionally glance to either side to ensure she didn't bump into anything.
As it so happened, she already knew both of these spells. Being assigned to either would have been a lesson in revision for her so she wasn't fussed about the one she'd been assigned. Admittedly, lapifors was the easier of the two but most of the challenge with the spell had already been overcome in her spare time. The hours of trying to get it right had already been spent--if only she'd been on her non-verbal challenge back then. She would've been making even further progress by now.
Jessa plopped back into her seat, giving the teapot a once over. "Testudinidifors." She uttered, giving a single firm tap to the teapot before watching it slowly morph to take on the shape of a tortoise. Like she'd said, revision.
The challenge now came in trying to get it non-verbally with the same ease and accuracy. It wasn't likely, not even on the sixth try but she supposed that now that she'd technically gotten through with the activity, she still had a good deal of time to get it right the way that mattered to her.
"Reverto." Her transfiguration wasn't incomplete, there was no need for the incantation the Professor had provided on undoing the subject.

The third year got up and looked around on the wall, and picked a black hat. How cool was that? Turning a hat into a rabbit like a muggle Magician.
She headed to a clear spot in the floor, with plenty of room to practice. She put the hat in the floor in front of her and said ”Lapifors.” Without the wand movement.
Next she did it using her wand. ”Lapifors.” Pointing her wand at the black hat. A little black cotton ball popped up, wiggly nose and long loppy ears. But it still looked like a hat. A hat with those bunny features. So weird.

Two. She was a two. Which meant she had to get her tongue around the teapot-to-tortoise spell.
Pronunciation was not Sam's forte.
But it was probably a good thing, since Sam had already conquered lapifors the year before for her OWLs. So she went up and collected an overly chintzy teapot from the side of the classroom. Placing both it and her wand on her desk, Sam started out by just saying the incantation aloud. "TES-tood-inI-die-fors." No, that wasn't right. Talk about it being a mouthful. Couldn't it just be tortoifors?

So they were going to start getting down to business.
Now, this was something that Eddie could respect. Not too much talking and going on and on and boring the children, but actually doing. He listened and did the whole counting off thing that she wanted them to do. His eyes went to the spell that his group the ones would be working on.
Changing an object into a rabbit?
Well, that was a lame creature to do that with, but he figured he'd start small and then move to something cooler.
" Lapifors, Lapifors, Lapifors"
Now that he had the words correct he looked for an object to practice on. Would a book work? It was going to for this at least, doing the movement once again ' Lapifors"

Well, luckily for Natalie, one spell she DID have down was the one that returned the object back to its original state. But... she did only know it so well because she had such a hard time getting transfiguration spells down. Especially on the first few tries.
"Reparifarge," she said, pointing her wand at her teacup with ears, sending it back to its original teacup state.
Then she sat up straighter and focused more, picturing a nice, soft rabbit in her mind. She wondered if she could take it to her dorm if she were successful... Anyway - "Lapifors," she said again with a point of her wand, and this time she had a little more success.
Natalie repeated spell several times, each time with more improvement (in between all the repairing charms, of course). She kept working, determined to get a transfiguration spell right DURING class, because she didn't want to have to work on it after class when she could be napping.
"Lapifors!" Natalie said, for what seemed like the thirtieth time. And.. wait a minute..!
"I did it!" There, right in front of her where her teacup had been, sat a cute little rabbit, its nose sniffing the air in front of her. Awww, so cute. *pat pat* Hi, bunny.

A spell was mentioned…it went up on the board…and Cassie copied it down into her notes. Each was interesting in its own right, as transfiguration was known to be, and the sixth year couldn’t help but wonder just which one, if any, would be the one that they would be learning and working with for today’s lesson. Thankfully she didn’t have to wait long as soon enough Professor Stewart was moving them forward, mentioning one spell from the board and another that hadn’t made it up there.
Lapifors…
…and Testudinidifors.
Rabbit or tortoise.
Cass watched as the students were either picked as a 1 or a 2 to correspond with what spell they would be working with, her own number a 2 in the long run. Tortoise it was. The Ravenclaw moved to the line of teapots and collected one for her very own before returning to her seat to begin work. “Testudinidifors…” she tried out, not using her wand at first, just pronouncing and visualizing first and foremost. “Testudinidifors… TES-tud-ini-di-fors… TES-tud-ini-di-fors… Testudinidifors”
Quite a mouthful.
Then came the wand movement to pull it all together as she focused on the teapot in front of her. “Testudinidifors!” she said precisely and clearly as she lightly tapped the teapot with her wand. It reacted by starting to change shape, but nothing clearly tortoiselike. “Testudinidifors!” Cassie tried again, getting closer this time.

Testudinidifors.... She was going to be turning a teapot into a tortoise. Awesome! Vi was excited. She had always been a fan of turtles and tortoises when she was younger. With people working with rabbits and tortoises, her mind wandered to the classic childhood tale of the tortoise and the hare. A wry smile graced her lips as she wondered if there was going to be a race between the two transfigured animals.
In the meantime, she needed to write down the notes of the three spells that the Professor had just presented. Alright. She picked up her quill and jotted them down in her notebook.
SPOILER!!: notebook
Spell: Lapifors Incantation: Lapifors (LAP-i-fors) Wand Movement: Point wand at target Result: Turns object into a rabbit
**Spell: Testudinidifors Incantation: Testudinidifors (TES-tud-ini-di-fors) Wand Movement: Tap the item once Result: Turns a teapot into a tortoise
Spell: Reparifarge Incantation:Reparifarge (reh-PAH-ree-fahj) Wand Movement: Point at the target Result: Reverses the effects of an incomplete Transformation spell
She was a 'two' right? That was what the Professor had pointed to her and the person before her had spoke two so she had to HAVE been a one. Alright. As a one, she had to go up and select an item.... There were books, cups, blocks, and more. Random items. Vi's eyes widened as they settled on a blue fabric covered book with rubbed lettering on it. She wondered what that book had inside of it and what story was hidden in there. She was about to go up and select a teapot when she saw the person in front of her grabbing a teapot. Whoops! She must have been a one then. Blue book for her then!
Now what was the incantation that she had to learn?
Testudisomething something? Testudinidiforsus? Testudinidfors? The incantation proved difficult but the wand movement simple. Tapping the object. Not too bad. She could do that but the incantation.... "TES...tud....ini...difors....TES-tud-ini-di-fors." began she. Merlin. Imagine saying that three times fast. The word was a tongue twister within itself ALREADY. Testudinidfors, testudinidfors, tes.. something tudinidi... something..fors
"Testudinidfors. Testudinidfors."
She paused. No. No. No. That was the two incantation. She was a one. She was learning Lapasomething.... Lapifors! Oh now that was much better. She only had to point at the object now. "Lapifors...Lapifors..." she said. And she didn't feel like she needed much work on that thus she eyed the book in front of her. "Lapifors," she spoke as she pointed her wand at the object, watching it transform into a white bunny.

Bruh. Zoryn knew instantly that she wanted to be a part of the turtle group. Like, no offense, but rabbits were WAY too complicated and tortoises were way cuter. So when (the better) Professor Stewart randomly assigned her the number 1, Zor decided to grab a teapot anyways. There were so many people in the classroom that (the better) Professor Stewart probably wouldn't even remember who got assigned what number.
Ha.
A flaw in the system, obviously.
Zoryn skipped over to the front of the room and made a grab for a very nice teapot. Too bad it wouldn't stay like this, but she was hoping to make a pretty nice turtle as a consolation. Without even taking the time to practice the spell, the Gryffindor tapped the teapot right away, "Teeees-tud-ini-di-FORCE." Talk about a mouthful.
Her spell did nothing, of course. No surprise. She was used to duds.

So...they were going to be reliving the tortoise and the hare in class then? It was all Derf could think about when he saw just WHAT they would be transfiguring today. Although all speculation went riiiiiiight out the window when he learned that he would be trying to transfigure a tortoise! The third year had nothing against rabbits and liked them just as well as any other creature, but Derf's little Hufflepuff heart fell with reptiles and amphibians. So, needless to say, he was rather heart eyes over the whole thing and GLADLY went to collect himself a teapot.
Plopping back down in his seat, Derf set to practicing the incantation because he HAD to get this one right.
He. Had. TO.
"Testudinidifors...Testudinidifors...Testudinidifor s....Testudinidifors..." He paused a moment to swallow and ruffle his hair, eyes on the teapot to visualize. "TES-tud-ini-di-fors...TES-tud-ini-di-fors...TES-tud-ini-di-fors...TES-tud-ini-di-fors..."
What KIND of tortoise did he want to make though...that was kinda a BIG decision. He was rather keen on the Galápagos tortoise to be honest...since he had actually SEEN and gotten to TOUCH several of them a few summers ago while on vacation with Jessa and her family. But also...like...African sulcata tortoises were really neat looking too. Derf was particularly partial to their shells. Same with the Ploughshare tortoise... but reaaaaaaally...the choice was obvious.
"Hey hey heeeeey Jessa!" he squeaked, tugging on the older Ravenclaw's sleeve to make SURE he got her attention. "Let's transfigure Giant Galapagos tortoise," he squealed as his bright blues lit up and looked back at his teapot.
But before he gave his own a try.... "Well done, Natalie!" he grinned, pointing to her rabbit. "IF we need pairs for like...you know...tortoise and the hare sorta thing...wanna be mine?"
