The small tower office that now belongs to Divination Professor Laurel Vance has had quite a number of inhabitants over the course of Hogwarts history like the famous seer Sybill Trelawney that taught the noble art during the trio's years at the school. The reddish floor is clean and covered here and there by a few mats in different shapes, colours and sizes. The parchments filled with interesting scrying methods to test at a later time, personal correspondence letters, various notes, drawings and Laurel's big load of books ranging from Divination textbooks to fantasy literature and boxes full of divination instruments and items have all neatly been put away in the filing units and bookcases that line the back wall.
The desk in the heart of the office of sturdy dark wood is kept neat but cluttered. On it you can usually find a deck of tarot cards, a red peacock quill, an earth globe and a novel of some sort. The window sill is home to a mimbulus mimbletonia and a pot of daisies. In a corner of the office a small magically self-serving tea table is set up that also can serve visitors lemonade who prefer that to tea along with a tray of freshly baked cookies or candy. Professor Vance is not the only inhabitant of the office since her Bengal cat Max also resides here if he isn't off hunting for mice somewhere in the castle. Do not lift or pet him if he doesn't seem like he wants to cuddle.
Come on in for any needs or help needed with Divination or Slytherin house matters, or if you just want to visit.
OCC: I will not have an arrival thread so please don't clog up the thread with 'waiting to enter' posts. Have your character knock on the door and then wait for Professor Vance to allow you to enter or to come back later. If you have any questions or want to set up a meeting with your characters professor/head of house don't hesitate to PM or VM me..

Kay always had permission to barge into Laurel's office since she was one of the woman's closest friends. Though this wasn't the case today. With the staff room becoming too crowded and somewhat noisy (thanks to the arrival of Paul and him announcing that he wanted to do a play), Kay had suggested to Laurel that the move here since there was something of importance she had to request.
The Muggle Studies professor held the door open since her friend had her arms full with goodies. "I apologise for whisking you away, Laurel. I know you would rather stay to find out more about that play idea Paul has up his sleeve.''
Kay had special privileges since Laurel regarded her as one of her closest and most dear friends. She had permission unlike most other Hogwartians staff included to just barge in to her office when she needed girlfriend time. Today though Laurel had trotted back up the 7 flight of stairs to her office with Kay to escape the too crowded and noisy staff room brought on by Paul's arrival and play announcement.
Going inside her office with her arms still full of the fresh goodies Laurel shook her head "Nonsense Kay, you don't need to apologize. I can always get details about the play of Fair Fortune later. You know Paul will keep talking about it especially if Regina agrees." Setting the scones and teapot down in the little comfy sitting group Laurel gestured for Kay to take a seat as she fetched the tea cups. "What did you want to ask me?" She had gathered that it was something important.

Kay smiled just a tad. "Oh, I think he will keep talking of it regardless if Regina agrees to it or not.'' The man was simply too hyper about everything in life anyway, something that she admired about him. "Thank you, Laurel. You're the best.'' She took a seat with a tiny sigh. Really, she appreciated Laurel so much. They had been friends for such a long time.
"Your predictions always come through... and what I wanted to ask of you is to please do a reading regarding my father.'' Laurel knew all about him being sick for the longest while now. Kay reached for a scone to nibble on even though she was not very hungry. It was more of something for her to be somewhat distracted by. "Please?''

Letting out a warm giggle Laurel said as came over with the floral decorated cups. "You're probably right and before Regina gives her play verdict we'll all probably want to kick Paul somewhere where it hurts just to get him to stop talking about it." She adored Paul to bits, but when he got way too hyper about certain things she just wanted to make him stop for her own sanity.
Sitting down in the comfy chair opposite Kay she blushed over pouring up the tea into the two cups for them. "Shhh, you make it too easy to be a good friend Kay." Compliments had always been rare in her home so she sucked this one up like a sponge.
Laurel had just leaned back in her chair with the tea cup resting between her hands when Kay told her what she wanted. Licking her lips she carefully set the tea cup down on the table before responding slowly. "Of course I can do a reading for you about your father. He has become more sick hasn't he? I'm so sorry Kay! You do know that I can't promise that what I'll find and see will be positive news though, right?"
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy had the desire to do something that was outside classroom hours. She thought it might be worth a try if she were to ask Professor Vance to allocate her with some sort of task. She made her way to the Divination professor's office and knocked on the door.

Laurel sat at her desk in the quiet of her office after all her lesson's were done for the day, to make preparations for her lessons the following day, before dinner. She was at her best fine tuning the last of her plans for the classes when she was interrupted by a knock on her office door.
Raising her head to glance over at her bengal cat that was lying in his basket, she mumbled to him, as she rose out of her chair. "Now who could that be? We aren't expecting anyone are we Max?" Going over to unlock and open her door Laurel looked out at the waiting girl clad in Hufflepuff robes with a welcoming smile pursing her lips. "Hello Daisy, what brings you by my door? Nothing is wrong i hope?"

Daisy gave Professor Vance a small smile. "Nothing is wrong, Professor. I was just wondering if by chance I could do a Divination-related task outside of lesson hours. I want to improve my inner/mind's eye and I think a task I can continue doing both at Hogwarts and at home just might be the solution."
The young witch fiddled with her long brown locks nervously awaiting the professor's answer.

"I'm glad to hear that Daisy." Laurel responded kindly, as she pushed the door to her office open wider. It was always nice when students came to see her without there being a crisis at hand that she needed to come and deal with. "Why don't you come inside my office Daisy and we can discuss an appropriate Divination task that you can do to both at home and here at school to improve your connection to your Inner Eye? I've got some nice fruit salad inside that we can share if you're hungry?" Now the question was what task she should set or rather suggest for Daisy to do since she after all only was a second year.
Tarot readings and tealeaves readings were the most traditional and easy methods so maybe something like that.

Daisy entered the office with a smile. "I am rather peckish, Professor." Daisy wasn't sure if she was allowed to sit down yet so she stood in the middle of the room admiring the room's decor. The sight of the cat reminded Daisy of her own cat. She flashed the cat a smile.

Kay forced a smile at the joke Laurel made. She knew that no one would ever want to kick Paul. Sweet, old Paul. He was such a dear and everyone loved his energy. Aww, her friend was returning the compliment. "I try and I'll keep trying.'' But now she needed to get down to business.
She swallowed the nibbled piece of scone and tried to get her composure together. There was absoloutely zero chance she was going to cry in front of her friend... she hoped. Instead, Kay nodded. "He has and thank you so much for your concern. Yes, I know. But I just can't stand not knowing, Laurel. You understand, don't you?''

Laughing warmly Laurel said "We'll fix that in no time with some fruit salad and chocolate ice cream Daisy." She remembered how it was when she had been growing up too. She had no probably with eating food whenever someone offered her something to eat. Her stomach had been like a food pit."Please take a seat a seat in one of the comfy chairs Daisy. I'll be right with you just going to fetch some plates and spoons. And you can pet Max if you want. He likes to be petted." Laurel called over her shoulder as fiddled around in her little kitchen and soon after walked back with all the necessities.
Filling a plate with chocolate ice cream and fruit salad she extended it towards Daisy saying "Here you are! So you wanted a divination task you can do both her and at home was that right?"

Talking and actually doing something were two different things and Kay got her joke even if the smile seemed a bit forced. Laurel adored sweet old Paul for all the energy he showed towards new things, but sometimes his energy just made her want to kick him hard in the side for it. Especially if she was having a bad day or had just had a negative prediction.
Taking up a scone, she watched Kay silently find her composure before she confirmed what Laurel had already feared. Her friend's father's illness had took a turn for the worse. Totally understanding she nodded, still holding onto the scone uneaten. "Yes, I do understand. I use my Inner Eye to see and to know, to be prepared. Sometimes it means I know too much, but it's always better than not knowing. Do you want me to read your tea leaves or your palms for news of your father?"
Well, that lesson had certainly been...interesting. Amelia was not sure what she had been expecting, but bird feeding to make predictions in order to answer vague adolescent questions had not been in her realm of expectations to be sure. Although the lesson looked good on paper, Amelia would certainly be submitting additional notes and observations on the lesson along with her observation form. The form made everything look rosy, and simply painted too simple a picture of the lesson that she'd just witnessed.
Amelia straightened her rather large, blue handbag on her shoulder and rapped sharply on Professor Vance's office door. She never liked these types of conversation; there was sure to be some unpleasantness or awkwardness at the very least. It was just the nature of having one's work observed and commented on. Naturally, Amelia would attempt to start and end the meeting on a positive note.

Daisy lowered herself into one of the chairs and petted Max behind the ears. It made her happy that the cat was enjoying the attention. Some felines didn't like being petted by strangers. Her own cat was a prime example. When Professor Vance returned with the ice-cream and fruit salad, Daisy accepted the bowl with a, "Thank you, Professor." Daisy carefully ate a spoonful which tasted amazing and the young witch had to let the Divination teacher know of her opinion about the dessert.
"This is absolutely delicious!"
At Professor Vance's question, Daisy swallowed and nodded. "I am leaning towards cartomancy either through tarot or a deck of ordinary cards. However, I'm open to any suggestions."

Laurel sat her desk drinking some tea out of her big floral cup while she made some notes after her lesson. She had had a BoG guest in her class audience today that had audited her every professor move. Outwardly Laurel had shown nothing but on the inside she hadn't exactly been very comfortable. She remembered what Regina had said to see it as something positive and constructive but being observed by someone that wasn't a hormonal teenager felt weird.
Rap! Rap!
Interrupted in her thoughts Laurel rose, giving her exterior and then her office a once over before she went to answer her door. Unlocking and opening she looked out at the BoG madam that had sat in on her lesson. Hastily putting on a smile Laurel greeted. "Good day Madam Raventhorne, want to come inside?" She was not going discuss her lesson outside in a corridor where student's could be eaves dropping.

Tasting her own spoonful of fruit and ice cream she could only agree with the badger girl's statement. "The desert is indeed delicious! The House elves have really outdone themselves." Homemade ice cream and fruit from the school green houses was definitely hard to top. Eating another spoonful of desert Laurel gestured with her spoon as she talked. "You're welcome, dear! It gave me the perfect excuse to indulge in some desert before dinner so thank you to you too." She would probably need to work out some extra tomorrow morning but it was worth it.
Focusing on the reason for Daisy's visit Laurel nodded "I see, you feel most at home with the cartomancy method then I take it? Not Palmistry or Scrying?" She had to remember that Daisy was still just a second year student and a novice diviner.

Kay could always count on her old friend to understand her. Admittedly, she had been nervous that Laurel would refuse to do this because the results could potentially distract and depress Kay. She took another nibble of scone then set it down. "You're the best Seer I know.'' Even if she only knew less than a handful of them, her friend was the most talented. No, she was not being biased.
"My palm would be best because I honestly do not think I could swallow all of the tea now. Do you need my left or right one?'' The Muggle Studies professor could not remember if there was a preference to a palm. Divination had never been her strongest subject.

Laurel had almost refused to go along with Kay's request since she couldn't promise that the results would be all happy roses. It was though a risk that her old friend was willing to take so she wasn't going to let her down. "I shall do my very best." Taking a few more bites of her scone even if she know had lost some of her appetite considering the seriousness of the situation.
Swallowing and taking a breath Laurel put down the remains of her scone and her tea cup on the table. Brushing her hands off on her robes she smiled warmly. "I need your right hand, Kay. Since its also your birth hand and most connected to your parents."
"When you're ready then give me your hand so I can study the lines of your palm." Laurel murmured quietly. She could always read Kay's tea leaves later to confirm whatever results came from reading her friend's palm. "Did you visit your father during our summer break?"

"I know you always do.'' Kay trusted Laurel and her predictions. When had her friend ever been wrong? Whatever the results, she was ready to accept. It was certainly better knowing than being in the dark. Without hesitation, she put forth her right palm.
"Yes, of course.'' Perhaps Laurel had forgotten that she still lived with her dad. Kay was slightly impatient for Laurel to begin the reading but she didn't push her. The would be only too rude. "You can tell me whatever results you get.''

Needless to say this was a nerve wracking.
The total and complete trust that Kay had for her and her predictions showed in her eyes and how she without hesitation put forth her right hand. Laurel guessed though that even Kay seemed cool on the outside she was probably very nervous on the inside.
Gently taking her friends hand Laurel closed her eyes for moment to focus her Eye before she opened them to look down at the lines in Kay's hand. She saw immediately what she had hoped not to see. Raising her gaze to meet Kay's she still held Kay's hand in both hers as said quietly. "I see many broken lines here. It means much emotional trauma is to come and possible even death to someone very close to you."
"I'm so sorry Kay but everything I can read from your palm lines predicts that your father is not going to survive the disease that ails him. He is going to die....." Feeling an uneasy knot form in the pit of her stomach right as the word die left her mouth Laurel stopped talking. This was not news she had wanted to give her friend at all.

With a wagon full of scrying supplies rolling behind her after a successful lesson with the youngest years Laurel turned into the corridor that led to her office. Spotting Julie Bellaire standing next to her office door she strode forwards her staff robes billowing behind her. Hopefully something wasn't amiss in the dungeons?
Coming up behind Julie she called out as she stopped a few meters away to not make the girl jump in fright or in the worst case turn and hex her. "Good afternoon Julie! Are you looking for me?"

"My mum does her cooking via the magical way since she's a witch. She likes baking cakes and cookies and making large roast dinners on special occasions. My Muggle father loves making breakfast meals such as waffles and pancakes in a non-magical way," Daisy answered.
When Professor Vance asked Daisy if she had ever given readings, she shook her head. "No, I haven't because I have not felt confident enough in my Divination skills to do so. Besides, I don't have tarot cards or muggle playing cards at hand."

Kay held her breath. The entire office felt tense to her and it did nothing to ease her heart rate. She watched Laurel as calmly as she could. Broken lines? She had no idea what that meant at first. The woman thought her heart had stopped but she simply nodded. Years of experience of keeping her emotions to herself kicked in and it took every ounce of that experience to help her keep it together.
There it was.
What she had hoped not to be true was actually going to happen. Kay retracted her hand. "Thank you, Laurel,'' she said quietly. "This is exactly what I wanted to know. I'll be fine; I just need some time to process this. I just ask you not to tell anyone please.'' She knew there was no need of her to worry about that. Laurel was very trustworthy.
Smiling Laurel said over her dessert plate "Good for you Daisy. You get to see both the magical and muggle way of cooking and I bet in other ways too. It will be an asset to you the older you get and when you seek work in some years too." Having one magical and one muggle parent could mean Daisy had an insight that others didn't.
Furrowing her brow's at Daisy's revelation Laurel pulled out her wand and acciod forth a deck of tarot cards that landed on the table between them with a small thud. Pointing at it she said "There, take that deck its yours Daisy. I have quite a number of them. You can use it to do your first task which is to read a friends cards. The key to get better at something is to practice."

There it was.
What she had hoped not to be true was actually going to happen. Kay retracted her hand. "Thank you, Laurel,'' she said quietly. "This is exactly what I wanted to know. After Laurel had said those words which she had rather not have said at all she waited for Kay's reaction. Studying her dear friend's face she didn't blame her at all if she yelled, cried or even tossed something around. To hear that her father was going to die was not news that were easy to process for anyone. Waiting Laurel tried to think up something to say but everything she thought off felt wrong or silly so she said nothing.
When Kay retracted her hand Laurel promised wholeheartedly as she locked her hands in her own lap. "I won't tell anyone. I'll keep it secret. I promise. And you know it's okay too if you're not fine with it Kay. It's your father after all. I'm here for you if you ever need anything. I've got a nice shoulder to cry on or we could go down to Haraldurs hut and paint it in rainbow colours for fun." Anything Kay wanted, she'd do. Laurel would hug her too, but Kay was so calm about it, it unnerved her.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy smiled. "My parents had a bit of trouble with understanding how the other half lives when they first met. Now after knowing each other for about twenty years, mum understands how muggles do things and dad understands the magical way of life. I think that helped when I started showing signs of magic."
When the deck of tarot cards landed between them, Daisy grinned and thanked Professor Vance. "This deck is just what I've been looking for, thank you." She stood up from her seat. "I best be going if that's okay. Thank you so much for everything."
