The flying instructor without his red feathered broom was a rare sight. But still it was the sight that would meet the students on this cold February morning. Small snowflakes were slowly making their way down towards the already snow-covered ground. Of course, the pitch only had a thin layer of snow covering the grass. Although the instructor was all for winter and snow, keeping the snow off the pitch was not the quickest job.
Since he didn't have his broom, Haraldur used a large, black trunk filled with lesson supplies as a seat. He crossed his legs and looked up at the castle to spot the first arriving student.
Come one, come all.
OOC: Ssssssssssssssssssssup?!

Oooooh, they were going to be flying soon. Thankfully. Etta picked one of the school brooms as she seriously considered the option of buying a broom of her own over the summer. She was really started to enjoy quidditch so maybe it would be a good idea? Heh. Aaaanyway. She was going to give it some serious thought later.
As for picking a colour.. orange or purple. Hmmm. The prefect decided to go with purple so she tied the ribbons on as the professor instructed and headed over to where Derf and Jessa was. This was going to be funnnnn.
• HuffleStud • Knight of The Zodiac • Manly Beard-Grower • Cicatrice de Harry •
So they were indeed flying today, Kirk deduced. He wasn't in particular experienced with Quodpot, other than it involved an exploding Quaffle so that definitely sounded like fun. Perhaps when he visits America for part of the summer he can find a few challengers there?
Anyways, when they were called to pick between two coloured ribbons, Kirk thought about it before choosing the purple ribbon to attach to his broom. He then went to join the others standing nearby.

He nodded his head as Professor B explained that they would be playing the game. His brothers had often taught him how to play and the rules since they were often playing in their parents backyard. He had picked up a school broom that looked like it could withstand the game and walked over toward where Professor B had the ribbons.
He looked around to see how many of his classmates were already on team purple and how many were orange. He noticed that there were more students with purple, so he grabbed two orange ribbons. He began tying them to his broom just like Professor had told them to do and awaited further instructions.
The numbers were about even, right? Because Sam reeeeeally wanted to be purple. It was one of her favourite colours, see. She took the ribbons from Baldvinsson with a smile and polite 'thank you', before going to peruse the available school brooms.
Maybe it was about time she purchased one of her own. She was a sixth year now, and one with a birthday coming up. Although it was also the birthday that would allow her to apparate, as long as she passed her test in June. So was unlikely to become her preferred form of transport.
Something to think about when writing her birthday list.
For now though, she selected a broom that appeared to be in pretty good condition - no obvious splinters or signs of over-use, at least - and started attaching her ribbons. Supporting the broom tight between her legs, she wrapped each one around the handle neatly not leaving too long a end, before tying in a tight knot. Seemed silly having excess fabric flapping about and getting soggy in the snow.
That complete, she held her broom at her side, and returned to wait for the next instructions. Were they really going to be playing with an exploding quaffle...er, quod?
Exploding Quaffles? Coooool. Emmeline shot Professor B. a HUUUUGE grin as she bounced over to collect her ribbons. Most of her friends in this class were on the purple team already, so the second year's hand hovered over those ribbons -- and froze in midair all hesitantly.
This game wouldn't be much fun if almost everyone was on the purple team and stuff. And more than anything else, Emmeline figured they needed a FUN lesson today -- 'specially with all of the dorms having been raided by now and the scary blood still staining the entrance hall and stuff. So, the second year reluctantly moved her hand over to the orange ribbons and grabbed a couple of those instead; she moved away from the professor and towards the school brooms kinda quickly and stuff, before she could lose her nerve and sacrifice some of the fun-ness of the game just to be on the same team as more people she knew.
Emmeline selected a school broom at random and set about tying her orange ribbons to the handle and by the tail like Professor B. had told them to do. She shot slightly nervous smiles at her teammates and bounced up and down on her feet a bit as she waited for the call to mount their brooms. This lesson was going to be aaaawesome!!!

Haraldur gave the students a few minutes to pick their ribbons. As they tied them around their brooms; he moved on with the lesson.
”We’re going to give Quodpot a try today.”(Surprise). He announced, watching the students team up. ”The aim of the game is to get the explosive Quaffle, the Quod, into a cauldron before it explodes. Once the Quod is dropped into the cauldron, the scorer’s team gets a point and a new Quod will be released. If a player is holding the Quod while it explodes, the player is eliminated.” He waited for this to sink in before continuing. ”The team with the most players still on the field when class is over, wins. If both teams have the same amount of players, the team with the most points win.”
He clasped his hands behind his back. ”Now, we have to agree on the rules for today’s game. If we were to design Hogwarts’ version of Quodpot, which rules would you want to include?”
OOC: Let’s settle some rules and decide penalties, wooop! What should or shouldn’t be allowed for the game? What penalty seems fair if the rules are broken? Elimination of a player/point deduction etc etc.
Class will be moving on in 1.5 days – 31st October, 7 pm GMT + 1.
A gentle reminder that catching up is allowed, please join a team if you haven’t already! List of the team members here.
Quodpot! She didn't remember much from the time she lived in Canada, she was very little when they moved to England. But her brother and other family members talked about it quite often. She was completely oblivious to the game.
And they were suppose to pick a team either purple which was her FAVORITE color or orange which wasn't so much her favorite color. But seeing the two teams were currently uneven Juni picked up her broom and went over to join the ORANGE team.
She walked over to Emmeline and stood next to her. Seeing that she looked a little apprehensive Juni gave the younger girl a reassuring smile She tied the ribbons around her broom and listened to Mr Flying Professor. Thinking about the question, though it was quite a rule or penalty raising her hand. "Play Fair." Again it really wasn't a rule or anything it was just something that EVERYONE should do you know. Plus to be honest she couldn't think of one of the quodpot rules to save her life at the moment.

So at first, Skylar wasn't sure anyone else was going to join team orange. Which wouldn't have really bothered the fifth year too much, considering both herself and Henry were quite experienced flyers. But then Tenacius joined their team and Patrick and Emmeline too, at which Sky beamed at all of them. Team Orange was totally going to win. And Juniper too, whom she recognized as one of the fellow leading ladies in the play.
Before they could begin though, time to hash out some rules... which as long as it wasn't modified to be ONE-SIDED and unfair the way Stewart had done, she was cool. Actually, that should be rule. "Both sides have equal opportunity to score." Couldn't have just one defending and one offending. And anyone who was in Muggle Studies would understand that. "And you can't hold the quod for more than two minutes... you have to pass to your teammate, otherwise it automatically goes to the other team." Sounded legit, maybe?

Oh so wait.... they get to invent the rules? Arent there supposed to be gameplay rules already? "Can we have a rule that curly haired people dunking the quod gets an extra x10 on the overall score?" he beamed jokingly.
"Oh yeah and uh, no diving*" there that sounded more sensible eh? Also that totally is part of the rulebook for both Quidditch and Quodpot as far as he can recall.
*Diving – Feigning being fouled to unjustly retain possession.

Patrick was watching everyone moving to their sides and teams before they began. Rules, what kinds of rules were a bunch of kids going to come up with anyhow? He couldn't figure any specific rules that would not limit the scope of the game. Although he finally decided that there was one, "No excessive pushing?" his voice trailed off as he thought about it, maybe he was the only one who wanted to not be pushed around since he was already carrying a possible exploding quaffle.
Quodpot honestly sounded like the most fun flying game ever (other than Quidditch). Quidditch would always be the absolute, super best game ever in Emmeline's opinion buuut... Exploding Quaffles!!! She was trying realllly hard not to start dancing in anticipation. Or not to mount her broom too early and stuff, 'cause she realllly wanted to get flying now mhm.
Emmeline shot Juni a grin as the Ravenclaw girl joined Team Orange too. They were totally going to win!
Ughhh, rules. The twelve-year-old was NOT a big fan of too many rules in games like this; they tended to bog people down and cut out some fun parts. Still, she did see the need for a few super basic rules, like... "Maybe no knocking someone off their brooms on purpose?", she suggested tentatively. Of course people were going to fight over the quods and stuff in the air and probably crash into each other, but she supposed it would be kind of bad if someone just dive bombed another player juust so their team could have more people left on the field, mhm. Unless that was part of the game, of course. She didn't mind either way much, really; she just wanted to get all this rules talk done faster so that they could get in the air.
Etta didn’t feel too sure about this game. It sounded complicated. She’d just started to enjoy quidditch.. and now, they had to try something entirely new. She just hoped she didn’t end up embarrassing herself. Oooooooh, wait. They got to come up with their own rules? Interesting. Honestly, Etta didn’t have anything new to add. Whatever she came up with had already been mentioned.. but she decided to answer anyway.
“I think people should have fun and not take the game too seriously.” The prefect added, raising a hand. Not a rule but you know. It was just a small suggestion, that’s all.
Maisie tied her hair behind her head. It was usually swinging around by her hips, but it was impossible to fly like that.
She raised her hand. "What about a speed limit, Professor? There are some students much older than us First Years and they have much more experience with brooms. We should make sure it's balanced." Maisie pulled on flying gloves. She was nervous about flying with NEWT age students, especially when an exploding Quaffle was being thrown around!

"Very good, miss Diggory. The game should be fair and both teams have equal opportunities." Haraldur nodded. "Teamplay is very important in today's game and it's usually around two minutes for possession of the Quod. We'll have a bit quicker play today however, to include all the players on the team." But yes, two fair points.

Haraldur smiled at the Gryffindor prefect's first suggestion. He didn't play favorites. Unless someone offered him a bag of peanuts before the lesson. But since no one knew about that, officially; he didn't play favorites. So no extra points Tenacius.
Amused, he he was more interested in the second part of the boy's reply. "Very good, Mr. Salander! This one you know from Quidditch and is also applicable in Quodpot."

Maisie pulled on flying gloves. She was nervous about flying with NEWT age students, especially when an exploding Quaffle was being thrown around!
Haraldur considered Maisie's suggestion for moment."Speed limit is indeed an option, Miss Dimple." He mused, thoughtfully. "But we're only going to be holding the Quod for a maximum of 10 seconds each so hopefully speed won't be a problem today." He gave her a smile. "I like the way you think though, Miss Dimple. The game should be fair despite the age gap between some of you."
When no more hands were in the air, Haraldur clapped his own together to get their attention again. "Very nice suggestions, everyone! You're all on point. These are the rules we'll have in play for today's game: Each player may only hold the Quod for 10 seconds. This differs from Quidditch and is based upon the importance of teamplay. This includes everyone and prevents just one single player from speeding over the pitch to score. If a player is not able to pass the Quod in the given time, the team loses possession of the Quod to the other team." He gave Skylar a look here because. Well, she kind of called that one.
"As Mr. Salander mentioned, no diving. This is not allowed in Quodpot nor in Quidditch. Feigning being fouled will not work and may result in your elimination.” Stern look. #I’mwatchingyou. "No direct physical contact is needed in this game." He continued with Patrick and Emmeline's suggestions. "Tackling is not allowed. It will result in your elimination.”
Pause for dramatic effect.
“The last rule I want to implement for today’s game is blocking of the cauldrons. The cauldrons.” He pointed at one with a purple ribbon behind them, and then over his shoulder at the other end of the pitch on the one with an orange ribbon tied around it. ”The orange team scores in the cauldron with the orange ribbon, the purple team scores in the one with the purple ribbon. But I want the whole team out on the field. Only one player from each team may enter the scoring circle marked around each cauldron.”
Haraldur walked over to the school brooms and picked up the one he'd chosen to use for the lesson. It wasn’t his own but it would do. ”Everyone mount your broom!” He kicked off the ground, hovering a few feet up in the air, waiting for the students to join him before flying higher up. ”Orange team, I want you on this side of the pitch. Purple team, you start on this side.” He gestured for the orange players to stay on the side of the pitch with the purple cauldron and for the purple players to start at the side with the orange cauldron. ”At my signal, I will release the first Quod. It will explode approximately every 5 minutes unless it’s in one of the cauldrons.” He caught sight of some worried expressions and waved his hand dismissively. ”Oh, don’t you worry, kids. It won’t hurt ya. A little soot never hurt anyone.” He chuckled. ”If you’re unlucky enough to hold the Quod when it explodes, please return to the ground and follow the game play from there.”
With no immediate questions, he got his wand out of the inner pocket of his coat and pointed it at the trunk, still on the ground. The lid flew open and one of the Quods shot up in the air, straight past them.
Not half a second later, the instructor blew the horn around his neck and the game began.
OOC: Let’s get ready to rrrrrrrrrumble!
No, but yes. So let’s be realistic with this one guys.
You can only RP your intentions, not the outcome, as usual. Pass to your team mates, block the Quod from entering the cauldron appropriately, let it land in the cauldron occasionally. Can’t be there to block every shot, eh?
OH. And the Quod will explode. Can’t be avoided really. Have the Quod explode occasionally, if you don’t want to be eliminated; it can explode mid-pass, in which case Haraldur will release a new Quod. It’s all fun and games.
If a team scores or the Quod explodes and a new one will have to be released, it’s OK to RP as though Haraldur released a new Quod in the middle of the pitch for either team to grab. I will try to be around all the time but… Ya know. I sleep and stuff.
I have written out examples below of what is allowed to RP. Take a look at that if you’re unfamiliar with the concept aaand I also provided a textcut with the rules and penalties.
Text Cut: Game play example
Player 1: Grabs hold of the Quod the instructor released and sets off towards the orange cauldron. Loops around a purple player and sees that orange player 2 is free just in time before the 10 seconds run out. Player 1 sends the Quod their way.
Purple player: Purple player leans forward on the broom to pick up speed and right before orange player 2 reaches out for the Quod, purple player catches it and makes a swift turn to head in the opposite direction. Passes to purple player 2.
[...]
Text Cut: Scoring example
Attacking player: […] with one swift motion throws the Quod towards the cauldron, hoping it will land perfectly and give the team another point. Defending player: […] Reaches out with their hand, only just touching the Quod with their fingertips before watching it land in the cauldron.
Text Cut: Rules and penalties:
Quod possession Description: Possession of the Quod for no more than 10 seconds. Penalties: The team loses possession of the Quod. Diving Description: Feigning being fouled to unjustly retain possession. Penalty: The team loses possession of the Quod. Severe: Player elimination. Physical contact Description: Any form of physical contact to get hold of the Quod. (Tackling, elbowing etc.) Penalty: Player elimination. Scoring circle Description: Only one player from each team at a time may enter the scoring circle in defensive and offensive play. Penalty: Defending team: The attacking team gets a penalty shot (no players in the scoring circle to defend the cauldron. Attacking team: The defending team gains possession of the Quod. Trashing Description: Unsportsmanlike conduct such as spitting, foul language, etc. Penalty: Player elimination/loss of house points.

Sam hadn't played many team sports, not even proper quidditch, only skirmishes with friends, so she was a little unaware of what 'typical' rules for a game might be. She agreed with what was said though, except that one by the Gryffindor prefect about the extra points; good job he wasn't being serious. And if she were to add one of her own? Maybe something about staying within the bounds of the pitch. Not that they'd be able to get too far before the quod exploded on them, nor would it help them score particularly, but it might help keep the more nervous flyers among them more involved.
But now they got to play! GRIN.
When instructed, Sam mounted her school broom and headed to the purple team's side of the pitch. Through the snow, she could just about make out the cauldron they were aiming for down the other end, although her attention was more on the locations of the players on the opposite team. It might be no contact, but that didn't mean no marking, right?
And the quod was in the air, the horn went, and Sam pressed forwards on her broom. It spurted forward quicker than the Ravenclaw had expected, and Sam soon found herself as the one nearest to the quod. She hooked her left hand round it, pulling it in to safety close to her body, before trying to find a free space between the orange players.
Ten...nine...eight...seven...
Being the first to possess it, she was overly cautious of the time ticking down as she tried to push forward. Eyes scanned the vicinity for someone free to pass to, and seeing a purple ribbon flanking to her right, Sam tossed it over lightly. Was that Etta maybe? Might have been someone else too.
Whose idea was it to play with an exploding ball in the snow anyways?!

Skylar grinned at Tenacius' suggestion of the extra points, even if she knew he was being silly. Also, she was kind of bouncing on the balls of her feet now with excitement. Could they fly yet? Snow didn't bother her anyway and flying was like the one thing in her life right now that seemed stress and drama-free. Relaxing, where she could just feel the cool air stinging her cheeks.
Half listening to the Professor, half her gaze at all the team orange players, Skylar mounted her broom at the sound of the horn and kicked off into the air. And had she been paying attention instead of enjoying the thrill of being in the air, she'd have grabbed the quod first, but alas, Sam Tyler got to it first.
Nerve-wrecking this was going to be though, because it was like a hot potato. She didn't want to be holding it when it exploded in her face, and yet she wanted it because she needed it to score.
Blue-gray eyes on the Ravenclaw and the quod, her eyes followed the older girl's gaze to where it was tossed and the Snakette quickly zoomed toward the ball, snatching it from its intended target. And passed it, in the direction of an orange teammate (Emmeline? Henry?) closer to the orange cauldron.

YESSSS, it was time to FLLLLYY! Emmeline had actually paid attention to the rules this time, 'cause she wanted the orange team to win all fairly and stuff. Plus, she didn't want anything crazy to happen in flying like when she hadn't been able to control that flying carpet earlier this year 'cause she'd been totally not paying attention at all sliiightly distracted. So the second year noted allll the important rules that Professor B. was saying, AND she was happy that he'd liked her answer and stuff too. It was always super great when that happened in subjects that she wasn't really the best ever at and stuff.
After marking the location of both cauldrons, Emmeline wasted no time in mounting her broom and kicking off with everyone else. Miss Sam caught the Quod first, so the Gryffindor sped kinda to the middle of the field but sliightly closer in to the orange cauldron. She didn't think she'd be the best ever at defending her cauldron, BUT she could handle short bursts of speed and stuff. Soo she had positioned herself to be a kind of middle man for team orange, which was super good 'cause Miss Skylar had soon stolen the Quod away from the purple team and it was coming towards her FAST.
Emmeline zoomed toward the catapulting ball and streeeteched out over her broom to catch it by the tips of her fingers. YESSSS!! She pulled back to get seated all properly and stuff, counting down her 10 seconds in her head, and searched the field for another team orange player. She soon spotted a teammate and called their name (Juni? Henry? Or anyone else on Orange?) before hurling the Quod towards them with still a couple seconds to spare.
Henry listened to the basic rules of the game then got on his broom to join his team at the designated side of the pitch. He wasn't completely sure how to play, but he thought he could pick it up easily enough. He was a seasoned Quidditch player, after all. But he hoped that his predisposition towards that game wouldn't affect him playing this other game properly.
He had his eye on the quaffle quod, and took off after it once the signal was blown. But Sam beat him to it and he chased after her. Wow.. did she play Quidditch? She wasn't a half bad flyer.
He fell into line behind Skylar as she intercepted the pass, and he swerved out to her side to facilitate a pass. Seeing Emmeline catch it on Sky's other side, he continued flying along with them, open for the ball. As the younger girl spotted him, he reached out to catch the quod, easily catching it and tucking it under his arm like he would a quaffle. Henry zoomed faster towards the cauldron, acutely aware of the passing time, and hoping that it wouldn't explode before getting it into their goal.
Taking aim, Henry threw the quod at the orange cauldron, hoping it would make it in before someone from the purple team tried to intercept it, or before it exploded.

Patrick was getting antsy as he was kind of okay at this game. The flying carpets were strange because his family didn't use them or any sort of weird transportation growing up. But Quod was a fun sport because even though his parents wouldn't let him and his brothers play on brooms they would run around and play the game.
With a strong sense of confidence he kicked off the ground and began to fly in the air watching as the ball first went to the Purple team. He was a little disappointed, afraid that his teammates wouldn't be able to get it back and score first. Scoring first was vital. Just as he thought the Purple team was going to take off, boom Orange team intercepted.
Patrick watched as the quod went into the cauldron. He threw up his hands excited that the Orange team had scored the first point. He saw the new Quod go into the air and zoomed after it hoping that he would get to it, or that his teammates on orange would get to it.
Etta was excited to fly but she was already having doubts. She got on her broom and headed over to where the purple team was, really hoping this wasn’t going to end up being embarrassing. Bleh. She had listened to the instructions carefully though.. and they were simple enough, really. She could manage. The game started within a few seconds and she watched Sam grab the Quod first before passing it to her.. but she wasn’t quick enough. Someone from the other team intercepted it in the middle aaaaand they ended up scoring. Great.
But, the prefect was a little more quick this time around. Once the new quod was released into the air, she made a grab for it before someone from the orange team could before she passed it on to a teammate nearby.. not sure who it was. But, hey. This was actually fun and definitely not as bad as she thought it would be.
Maisie caught the Quod. She was so surprised it had ended up in her possession, she dropped it. "No!" She cried. She made a grab for it, lost her balance on her broom and flailed terrifyingly in mid-air. With her heart thumping, she let the Quod fall and gripped her broom handle with both hands. Her knuckles were white.

Patrick zoomed after the Quod after a girl dropped it. He was surprised with how comfortable he was on his broom. He wanted to get another point for team Orange, but wasn't sure what was going to happen. Just as he dove for the quod his hand wrapped around it and he leveled out the broom to start going toward the cauldron on his side of the field.
Ten, nine, eight, seven... he only had six more seconds to get the quod off to an orange teammember. He took another second, five more to go. Before he passed it off to an Orange team member he saw down the field, hoping his teammates caught it.

Skylar beamed at Emmeline when she caught the quod and passed it off to Henry and then Patrick who scored. That was like the BEST display of passes - well, maybe not the best display, but it felt awesome and for it to be occurring during a Hogwarts lesson instead of a match, well, the fifth year felt so much pride of being on the orange team right now.
She was still in position to intercept any passes the purple players tried to make, when sight and screams of a first year ravenclaw caught her attention away from the quod. Errr.... was she alright? She'd regained her composure quickly enough though, even if she did still have like NO color in her face, but it wasn't like she was going to fall off her broom, which was the important thing.
Back to the game at hand, oh good, Patrick had collected the quod and thrown it. Skylar was zooming towards it, when just before she reached it ...
BOOM!
Causing the fifth year to feel VERY grateful that she hadn't caught it and been eliminated. She was so close and yet so far.

The orange team was the first team to score but after Haraldur released the second quod, Etta took control of the game for the purple team. It almost looked like they would equalize the score.
Well, that was before the quod exploded mid-air.
Haraldur blew in his horn to signal the exploding quod. No one got eliminated this time around. He pointed his wand towards the trunk again and let another Quod zoom up in the air.
"New quod on the field!" He announced, watching the Quod zoom past him higher up in the air.
